  • PGA star Jason Day wears sweats at Pebble Beach, sparking social media stir, John Fetterman comparisons

It’s no secret that Jason Day has pushed the boundaries lately with his on-course attire, but many fans think he crossed the line on Sunday.

Day teed off for the final round at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and his outfit – a full gray sweatsuit – drew a ton of reaction.

Jason Day hits his bunker shot during the Pebble Beach Pro-Am on Feb. 2, 2025.

It got to the point where Augusta National officials asked him to make an outfit change during last year’s Masters.

At Pebble Beach, Day was donning an outfit that some might just sleep in, prompting a stir.

“I don’t care how much I get downvoted but he is finding new ways to look like a slob,” wrote one user on X.

“An insult to the game,” said another.

Added one more, “Dressing like John Fetterman should not be an option for professional golfers on the tour. Frankly, it should not be an option for any golfers playing at Pebble Beach.”

PGA star Jason Day caused a social media uproar at Pebble Beach when he showed up to practice in a pair of baggy sweatpants, sparking comparisons to Pennsylvania Lieutenant Governor John Fetterman’s signature style.

Day, known for his sleek and polished on-course attire, surprised fans and fellow players alike with his casual and laid-back look. The contrast between his usual crisp polo shirts and slacks and the oversized sweats left many wondering if this was a new fashion statement or simply a one-time deviation from the norm.

The comparison to Fetterman, who is often seen sporting work boots, cargo shorts, and a simple t-shirt, was not lost on Twitter users. Some joked that Day must be taking style tips from the politician, while others praised him for breaking away from the traditional golf attire and embracing a more relaxed approach.

Regardless of the reason behind Day’s fashion choice, one thing is for sure – he certainly got people talking. Only time will tell if this was a one-time experiment or the beginning of a new trend on the PGA Tour.

  • ‘I Don’t Have A Timeline’: Jani Hakanpaa Will Not Play For Finland At 4 Nations Sparking More Questions About His NHL Future

Jani Hakanpaa won’t suit up for Team Finland at the 4 Nations Face-Off due to an injury, the Toronto Maple Leafs announced on Saturday.

The 32-year-old defenseman hasn’t appeared in a game since Nov. 16 against the Edmonton Oilers. Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said on Dec. 5 that Hakanpaa had a procedure done “to help himself out a little bit.”

Hakanpaa has participated in a majority of Toronto’s practices within the last month, but when he could return to the lineup has been a mystery. The Maple Leafs have a four-game Western Canada (and Seattle) road trip before the 4 Nations tournament begins.

The defenseman, however, didn’t make the trip with the team to Edmonton earlier this week.

“He’s back in Toronto, skating and doing things there,” Berube said “Really, I don’t have a timeline for him. Really, I don’t.”

Hakanpaa has played two games for the Maple Leafs this season. He didn’t register a point while averaging 14:05 of ice time in that span. The two games he appeared in were three days apart.

The defenseman returned to practice after his second knee procedure on Jan. 13. He explained his excitement about possibly suiting up for Team Finland at the 4 Nations.

“Hopefully, we get there (ready to play) before the 4 Nations,” he said.

The Maple Leafs signed the veteran defenseman to a one-year, $1.47 million contract on Sept. 11, after a summer filled with questions about where he’d join the team. It was reported that Hakanpaa signed a longer deal earlier in the summer, however, that never came to fruition.

Finland will now need to search for two defensemen for their 4 Nations squad. Dallas Stars defender Miro Heiskanen will also be forced to miss the tournament after suffering a knee injury against the Vegas Golden Knights on Jan. 29.

Hakanpaa was placed on the Maple Leafs’ long-term injured reserve list on Dec. 31.

The defenseman has 15 goals and 30 assists in 290 games, split between the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, Stars, and Maple Leafs.

The hockey world was buzzing with speculation after defenseman Jani Hakanpaa announced that he would not be joining Team Finland at the upcoming 4 Nations tournament. Hakanpaa, who has been a key player for the Finnish national team in the past, cited personal reasons for his decision to sit out the tournament.

Many fans and analysts were quick to jump to conclusions about Hakanpaa’s future in the NHL, with some speculating that he may be considering retirement or a return to Europe. However, Hakanpaa himself has been adamant that he does not have a timeline for his decision and is simply taking things one day at a time.

While it’s certainly possible that Hakanpaa’s absence from the 4 Nations tournament could be a sign of bigger changes to come, it’s important not to jump to conclusions. Hakanpaa has proven himself to be a reliable and talented player in the NHL, and whatever decision he ultimately makes about his future will surely be well-considered.

In the meantime, fans will have to wait and see what the future holds for Jani Hakanpaa. One thing is for certain: his absence from the 4 Nations tournament has only sparked more questions about his NHL future.

  • Trump makes moves to expand his power, sparking chaos and a possible constitutional crisis

Just a little over a week into his second term, President Donald Trump took steps to maximize his power, sparking chaos and what critics contend is a constitutional crisis as he challenges the separation of powers that have defined American government for more than 200 years.

The new administration’s most provocative move came this week, as it announced it would temporarily halt federal payments to ensure they complied with Trump’s orders barring diversity programs. The technical-sounding directive had enormous immediate impact before it was blocked by a federal judge, potentially pulling trillions of dollars from police departments, domestic violence shelters, nutrition services and disaster relief programs that rely on federal grants. The administration on Wednesday rescinded the order.

Though the Republican administration denied Medicaid was affected, it acknowledged the online portal allowing states to file for reimbursement from the program was shut down for part of Tuesday in what it insisted was an error.

Legal experts noted the president is explicitly forbidden from cutting off spending for programs that Congress has approved. The U.S. Constitution grants Congress the power to appropriate money and requires the executive to pay it out. A 50-year-old law known as the Impoundment Control Act makes that explicit by prohibiting the president from halting payments on grants or other programs approved by Congress.

“The thing that prevents the president from being an absolute monarch is Congress controls the power of the purse strings,” said Josh Chafetz, a law professor at Georgetown University, adding that even a temporary freeze violates the law. “It’s what guarantees there’s a check on the presidency.”

Democrats and other critics said the move was blatantly unconstitutional.

“What happened last night is the most direct assault on the authority of Congress, I believe, in the history of the United States,” Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine, said Tuesday.

While some Republicans were critical, most were supportive.

“I think he is testing the limits of his power, and I don’t think any of us are surprised by it,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer, a North Dakota Republican who is close with Trump.

At first blush, the Trump administration appeared to be following the correct procedures in identifying potential spending cuts, and the Impoundment Control Act outlines a procedure for how they could become permanent, said Rachel Snyderman, a former official at the Office of Management and Budget who is now at the Bipartisan Policy Center.

Congress must eventually sign off on any cuts the administration wants to make, Snyderman said, though she noted that no president since Bill Clinton, a Democrat, has been successful in getting that done. Congress did not act on $14 billion in impoundment cuts Trump proposed during his prior term, she said.

“We have to see what the next steps are,” Snyderman said.

The attempt to halt grants came after Trump, who during the campaign pledged to be “a dictator on day one,” has taken a number of provocative moves to challenge legal constraints on his power. He fired the inspectors general of his Cabinet agencies without giving Congress the warning required by law, declared that there is an immigrant “invasion” despite low numbers of border crossings, is requiring loyalty pledges from new hires, challenged the constitutional guarantee of birthright citizenship and is moving career staff out of key positions at the Department of Justice to ensure his loyalists control investigations and prosecutions.

On Tuesday evening, the new administration made its latest move, trying to prune the federal workforce by offering pay until the end of September for those who agree to resign by the end of next week.

The Trump actions have all led to a cascade of court challenges contending he has overstepped his constitutional bounds. A federal judge in Seattle has already put on hold Trump’s attempt to revoke birthright citizenship, calling it a blatant violation of the nation’s foundational legal document. On Tuesday, nonprofit groups persuaded a federal judge in Washington to put the administration’s spending freeze order on hold until a fuller hearing on Feb. 3.

Democratic attorneys general also rushed to court to block the order. New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez, a Democrat, said the swiftness of the court action against Trump’s spending freeze demonstrates the “carelessness” of the order.

“My hope is that the president, working with Congress, can identify whatever his priorities are and can work through the normal constitutional order that is well established that limits the power of Democratic and Republican presidents,” he said.

The grant freeze — administration officials described it as a “pause” — fit with a long-sought goal of some Trump allies, including his nominee to run the Office of Management and Budget, Russell Vought, to challenge the constitutionality of the Impoundment Control Act. They contend the president, as the person in charge of distributing funds, should be able to have some control over how the money goes out.

Though there’s little doubt the new administration wanted a court fight over its power to control spending, experts agree that this was likely not the way they hoped to present it.

“This is a really sloppy way of doing this,” said Bill Galston, of the Brookings Institution, adding that he thought it was an administration error. “This is just classic Trump. He believes it’s better to be fast and sloppy than slow and precise.”

In her first press conference, Trump’s new press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, on Tuesday urged organizations that need the grants to call the administration and show how their operations are “in line with the president’s agenda.”

“It’s incumbent on this administration to make sure, again, that every penny is accounted for,” Leavitt said.

Republican lawmakers largely took the freeze in stride.

“This isn’t a huge surprise to me,” said Rep. Dusty Johnson of South Dakota during the House Republican retreat at one of the president’s Florida golf resorts. “Clearly, Donald Trump campaigned in no small part on the idea that the Biden administration was putting out a lot of money that was not consistent with Donald Trump’s values.”

But Democrats and others were furious at the move, which seemed designed to undercut congressional authority.

“If President Trump wants to change our nation’s laws, he has the right to ask Congress to change them,” Sen. Bernie Sanders, an independent from Vermont, said in a statement. “He does not have the right to violate the United States Constitution. He is not a king.”

Chafetz, of Georgetown University, said the lack of pushback from Republican members of Congress was especially alarming because the legislative branch is the one whose powers are most at risk in the latest power play.

Even if Trump loses the legal battle, Chafetz said, he and his followers might feel like they’ve won by pushing things to this extreme.

“Damaging the institutions they don’t like,” he said, “seems to be their whole theory of governance.”

Riccardi reported from Denver. Associated Press writers Kevin Freking and Lisa Mascaro in Washington and Morgan Lee in Albuquerque, New Mexico, contributed to this report.

In a shocking turn of events, President Trump has made bold strides towards expanding his power, sparking chaos and fear among Americans. With recent executive orders and controversial decisions, many are left wondering if we are on the brink of a constitutional crisis.

One of the most alarming moves by the President is his decision to declare a national emergency in order to fund his long-promised border wall. By circumventing Congress and using emergency powers, Trump has raised concerns about the limits of presidential authority and the separation of powers outlined in the Constitution.

Additionally, Trump has made moves to consolidate his power within the administration, purging dissenting voices and installing loyalists in key positions. This consolidation of power has raised fears of authoritarianism and a disregard for democratic norms.

As tensions escalate and the country becomes increasingly polarized, it is crucial for lawmakers, the media, and the American people to remain vigilant and uphold the principles of democracy. The future of our nation may depend on how we respond to these unprecedented challenges to our constitutional system.

  • Sean Penn Sparking Early Oscar Buzz for PTA’s ‘One Battle After Another? — World of Reel

It’s way too early to speculate about next year’s Oscars, but industry insider Kris Tapley, who last worked for Netflix, has decided to start the campaign early for Sean Penn.

He’s echoing what I previously reported about Penn’s performance in Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another”; the man is said to be “absolutely terrifying” as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw.

I reported that, apparently, Penn “steals the show” as Lockjaw. Sporting a grey-ish hawk, his character is described as a “great villain” that has the power and presence to give you nightmares.

Tapley is taking it a step further, implying that an unnamed Oscar-nominated filmmaker recently told him that Penn could very well win a third Oscar for his work in PTA’s film:

Sean Penn Sparking Early Oscar Buzz for PTA’s ‘One Battle After Another? — World of Reel

As awards season approaches, the buzz surrounding potential Oscar contenders is starting to build. One name that is already generating a lot of attention is Sean Penn, who stars in Paul Thomas Anderson’s upcoming film “One Battle After Another.”

Penn’s performance in the film has been described as nothing short of transformative, with many critics hailing it as one of the actor’s best performances to date. His portrayal of a war veteran struggling to re-adjust to civilian life has been praised for its raw emotion and depth.

With a director like Paul Thomas Anderson at the helm, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to bring out the best in his actors, it’s no surprise that Penn’s performance is already generating Oscar buzz.

Of course, it’s still early days and there are many more films set to be released before the Oscars take place. But if the early reactions are anything to go by, Sean Penn could be a strong contender for a Best Actor nomination come awards season.

Keep an eye on this space for all the latest updates on “One Battle After Another” and the rest of the awards season contenders.

  • Libyan Sought by I.C.C. for War Crimes Is Released by Italy, Sparking Backlash

When Italian police officers swooped into a Holiday Inn in Turin in northern Italy and arrested a guest — the director of several Libyan prisons known for their inhumane conditions — they were acting on a warrant from the International Criminal Court.

The warrant against the man, Osama Elmasry Njeem, said he was suspected of crimes against humanity and war crimes, including murder, torture, rape and sexual violence.

But two days after the arrest last Sunday, the Italian police released Mr. Njeem and escorted him back to Libya on a government plane. Pictures soon emerged on Libyan news media showing him cheerfully descending the aircraft bearing the Italian flag.

His release has enraged the International Criminal Court and has alarmed human rights groups and Italy’s political opposition, which accused the government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of cozying up to the Libyan authorities because it relies on Libya to keep migrants away from Italian shores.

“You sent this man back for political reasons,” Peppe De Cristoforo, an opposition lawmaker, told Italy’s interior minister in Parliament on Thursday. “Unfortunately the Libyan authority is complicit with the Italian government.”

Ms. Meloni’s government has denied those accusations and attributed the release to procedural reasons. The Italian police, the authorities said, arrested Mr. Njeem before receiving an official request to do so from the justice ministry, violating the procedure and invalidating the arrest.

By the time the justice minister finished assessing the I.C.C.’s warrant, Mr. Njeem was already on his way home, government officials said.

Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, said Mr. Njeem had been expelled “for security reasons” because he was considered “dangerous.”

Asked whether the release was related to Italy’s “subordination” to Libya because of agreements on migrants, Italy’s foreign minister, Antonio Tajani, told Italian reporters that “there is no subordination to anyone.”

Those explanations have not been persuasive to the government’s critics.

“Am I the only one who thinks you have gone completely crazy?” Senator Matteo Renzi, a former prime minister, asked in the Senate. “He was in jail and you brought him back home.”

Since 2017, Italy has had a bilateral agreement with Libya that includes millions of euros in financial support to curb the flow of migrants from Africa trying to cross the Mediterranean and reach European shores.

Ms. Meloni’s party has credited the deal with reducing the number of launches of rickety boats from Libya and Tunisia. The prime minister traveled to the Libyan capital, Tripoli, several times last year and has called the relationship with Libya “a priority for Italy.”

Human rights groups say that success has come at the cost of grave human rights violations. They say North African countries have abandoned migrants in the Sahara without food or water, or kept them in Libyan prisons, where they have faced torture, sexual violence and starvation.

As the director of the Mitiga prison in Tripoli, among others, Mr. Njeem, the head of the Libyan judiciary police, was accused of committing, ordering or assisting crimes against people imprisoned in the system since February 2015, according to the I.C.C.

A statement by the court said some of his victims had been imprisoned for religious reasons, on suspicion of “immoral behavior” or homosexuality, or for the purpose of coercion.

“It was the first major arrest of someone at the top of the Libyan prison system since 2011,” said Nello Scavo, a reporter for Avvenire, the newspaper of the Italian Bishops’ Conference. Mr. Scavo has been documenting cases of abuse in Libyan prisons for years.

Riccardo Noury, a spokesman for Amnesty International Italy, said his agency had documented cases of torture, rape, forced labor and other crimes in prisons overseen by Mr. Njeem.

“He had direct supervision and management of some of these centers,” Mr. Noury said, adding that the accusations against Mr. Njeem had been bolstered by reports by other agencies and institutions, including the United States Department of State (where he is identified in a report on human rights as Usama Najim).

Chantal Meloni, an Italian criminal lawyer and professor who also works for the Berlin-based European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights, said Mr. Njeem’s release was a direct affront to the International Criminal Court, and was particularly troubling “because Italy is a founding member.”

Still, many questions remained about why the Italian authorities did not act swiftly to address any bureaucratic mistake and instead rushed a man who was wanted for war crimes out of Italy.

Mr. Piantedosi, speaking on behalf of the Italian government, said the decision to release Mr. Njeem was made with the courts. He added that the government would offer more details next week.

Islam Al-Atrash contributed reporting from Tripoli.

In a controversial move, Italy has released a Libyan man sought by the International Criminal Court (I.C.C.) for alleged war crimes. The decision to release the suspect has sparked backlash from human rights groups and the international community.

The man in question, whose identity has not been disclosed, is accused of committing heinous crimes during the conflict in Libya. He was arrested in Italy on charges of human rights violations and was awaiting extradition to the I.C.C. for trial.

However, Italian authorities have decided to release the suspect, citing concerns over his health and the possibility of him facing ill-treatment if extradited to the I.C.C. The decision has been met with criticism, with many calling it a betrayal of justice and a disregard for the victims of the crimes allegedly committed by the suspect.

Human rights groups have condemned Italy’s actions, stating that it sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the authority of the I.C.C. They have called for the suspect to be brought to justice and for Italy to uphold its obligations under international law.

The release of the Libyan man sought for war crimes has reignited the debate over accountability for atrocities committed during conflicts. It remains to be seen how this controversial decision will impact future cases of international justice and the fight against impunity.

  • Why Dan Campbell gave Giants credit for sparking Lions’ successful season

Hang the banner: If the Detroit Lions win the Super Bowl, it’s all thanks to the Giants.

That’s what Lions coach — and ex-Giants tight end — Dan Campbell said when asked what the impetus was for Detroit’s 15-2 regular season, which continues Saturday when they face the Commanders in the Divisional Round.

Campbell said the Lions-Giants brawl-heavy joint practice back in August set the tone for the kind of tough matchups they’d face this season.

BUY GIANTS TICKETS: STUBHUB, VIVID SEATS, TICKETMASTER

“I felt like the biggest adjustment for us was training camp out at New York,” Campbell said Thursday. “That was the first real taste of the perception. I thought the Giants, man… They practiced hard, they brought it.

“It was a lot of energy; a lot of juice. And I thought that was good for us to get that and it’s like now, you know what it’s going to be like all season, and we’ve handled it. I mean, we handle it well. We know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot.”

If only the Giants had found the same “juice.” With a 3-14 record and the longest losing streak in franchise history, the Giants had one of their worst seasons of the century in 2024. Detroit, meanwhile, is the betting favorite to win Super Bowl LIX, despite a slew of injuries to their impressive defense.

In a recent press conference, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave credit to the New York Giants for sparking his team’s successful season. Campbell mentioned how a tough loss to the Giants earlier in the season served as a wake-up call for the Lions, motivating them to improve and work harder.

Despite the disappointing defeat, Campbell pointed out that the loss forced the Lions to reevaluate their performance and make necessary adjustments. This newfound determination and resilience ultimately led to a string of victories and a strong finish to the season.

Campbell’s recognition of the Giants’ role in the Lions’ success serves as a reminder of the valuable lessons that can be learned from defeat. It highlights the importance of perseverance, resilience, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks. Ultimately, it is a testament to the power of adversity in driving teams to reach their full potential.

As the Lions continue to make strides in their season, it is clear that they have taken the lessons learned from their loss to the Giants to heart. With Campbell’s leadership and the team’s newfound motivation, the Lions are poised to finish the season strong and make a statement in the playoffs.

Amen Thompson and Tyler Herro sparked a massive benches-clearing brawl in the final seconds of the Miami Heat’s 104-100 win over the Houston Rockets on Sunday night.

With about 30 seconds left at the Toyota Center, Herro and Thompson were jostling for position ahead of an inbounds pass when things suddenly erupted. Thompson then suddenly got into Herro’s face and grabbed him by the collar before he ripped him down to the floor. Instantly, Thompson and Herro were swarmed by both teams onto the pile as chaos ensued.

It took several assistant coaches, staff members and even arena security to diffuse the situation. Herro was seen clapping at Thompson as they were both being held back.

That naturally led to a slew of ejections, including Thompson, Jalen Green and Houston coach Ime Udoka. Terry Rozier and Herro were both ejected for the Heat. While it’s unclear what sparked the incident specifically, the league is sure to hand out fines and further punishment as a result in the coming days.

Despite the chaotic final sequence, the Heat held on down the stretch to grab a four-point win. Herro had a team high 27 points and nine assists for Miami, which improved to 16-14 with the victory. Nikola Jokic added 18 points off the bench, and Haywood Highsmith finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.

Dillon Brooks led the Rockets with 22 points in the loss. Alperen Sengun finished with 18 points and 18 rebounds, and Green had 19 points before he was ejected. Thompson had just five points off the bench.

This post will be updated with more information shortly.

The highly anticipated matchup between the Miami Heat and Houston Rockets took a violent turn last night as tensions boiled over on the court. In a shocking move, Heat forward Amen Thompson threw Rockets guard Tyler Herro to the court, igniting a massive brawl that spilled onto the sidelines.

The altercation began when Herro and Thompson got tangled up under the basket, leading to some heated words exchanged between the two players. Thompson, known for his physical style of play, quickly escalated the situation by aggressively throwing Herro to the ground.

The incident immediately sparked chaos on the court, as players from both teams rushed to defend their teammates. Coaches and officials struggled to break up the melee, as punches were thrown and tempers flared.

The referees ultimately ejected Thompson and Herro from the game, but the damage had already been done. The violent altercation between the two players is sure to result in fines and suspensions from the league, as the NBA does not tolerate such behavior on the court.

Fans and analysts alike were left stunned by the intense brawl, which overshadowed what was supposed to be a competitive game between two playoff contenders. The fallout from this incident is sure to have far-reaching consequences for both teams, as they deal with the fallout from this ugly incident.

As the dust settles on this chaotic night in Miami, one thing is clear: tensions between the Heat and Rockets are at an all-time high, and the repercussions of Thompson’s actions are sure to reverberate throughout the league.

  • Musk and Ramaswamy are sparking a debate over the H-1B visa. Here’s what to know about the visa.

Musk and Ramaswamy are sparking a debate over the H-1B visa. Here’s what to know about the visa.

Billionaires Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy may be advising President-elect Donald Trump on cutting federal spending but they also have some advice for him about the U.S. workforce, urging his next administration to bring in more foreign tech workers.

Musk and Ramaswamy’s views have sparked an online spat between factions of Trump’s supporters over immigration and the tech industry, whose businesses rely on the H-1B visa to bring in thousands of foreign engineers and other skilled workers each year from India, China and other nations.

The tech industry has long called for more H-1B visas to attract highly skilled workers to the U.S., although Trump’s first administration restricted the program in 2020, arguing that it allows businesses to replace Americans with lower-paid foreign workers.

That debate has again erupted after Musk, himself once on an H-1B visa and whose electric vehicle company Tesla has hired workers using the program, defended the tech industry’s need to bring in foreign workers. Ramaswamy, for his part, wrote in an X post that American culture “has venerated mediocrity over excellence,” leading to a nation that does “not produce the best engineers.”

“There is a permanent shortage of excellent engineering talent. It is the fundamental limiting factor in Silicon Valley,” Musk wrote on Dec. 25 on X, his social media app.

Here’s what to know about the debate and the H-1B visa.

How did the most recent H-1B debate begin?

The debate touched off this week when Laura Loomer, a right-wing influencer with a history of racist and conspiratorial comments, criticized Trump’s selection of Sriram Krishnan as an adviser on artificial intelligence policy in his coming administration. Krishnan favors the ability to bring more skilled immigrants into the U.S.

Loomer declared the stance to be “not America First policy” and said the tech executives who have aligned themselves with Trump were doing so to enrich themselves.

Loomer’s comments sparked a back-and-forth with venture capitalist and former PayPal executive David Sacks, whom Trump has tapped to be the “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar.” Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tasked with finding ways to cut the federal government, defended the tech industry’s need to bring in foreign workers.

It bloomed into a larger debate with more figures from the hard right weighing in about the need to hire U.S. workers, whether values in American culture can produce the best engineers, free speech on the internet, the newfound influence tech figures have in Trump’s world and what his political movement stands for.

Who qualifies for an H-1B visa?

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services says the H-1B visa is geared toward professionals with a “theoretical and practical application of a body of highly specialized knowledge,” and who have a bachelor’s degree or higher in their field.

Those professionals also need to have been offered a temporary job by a U.S. company, which must offer a wage that’s not lower than that paid to similarly qualified workers or below the prevailing wage for the job in the geographic area where that person will be working.

How many workers receive H-1B visas?

The U.S. caps the number of H-1B visas at 65,000 new visas each year, although an additional 20,000 can be granted for those with a master’s degree or higher, USCIS says. The visa is valid for three years, but can be extended for an additional three years beyond that.

However, the U.S. approves extensions each year for people already working on H-1B visas, with a 2023 report noting that the agency granted the greenlight to more than 309,000 requests for continuing employment under the visa program.

What countries do H-1B recipients come from?

More than 7 in 10 recipients of H-1B visas are from India, followed by China, at more than 1 in 10 recipients. The remainder of H-1B visa holders stem from a wide range of nations, including Canada, Korea, the Philippines, Mexico and Taiwan, according to a USCIS report.

What’s the debate about H-1B visas?

Technology companies say H-1B visas for skilled workers, used by software engineers and others in the tech industry, are critical for hard-to-fill positions.

But critics have said they undercut U.S. citizens who could take those jobs. Some on the right have called for the program to be eliminated, not expanded.

Some investigations, including a 2017 report from CBS’ “60 Minutes,” have found that while many businesses use the program as intended, some have taken advantage of the visa program to replace American workers with less expensive temporary foreign workers.

What does Donald Trump say about H-1B visas?

Trump has not yet weighed in on the rift, and his presidential transition team did not respond to a message seeking comment.

But Trump’s positions over the years have reflected the divide in his movement. His tough immigration policies, including his pledge for mass deportation, were central to his winning presidential campaign.

He has focused on immigrants who come into the U.S. illegally but he has also sought curbs on legal immigration, including family-based visas.

As a presidential candidate in 2016, Trump called the H-1B visa program “very bad” and “unfair” for U.S. workers. After he became president, Trump in 2017 issued a “Buy American and Hire American” executive order, which directed Cabinet members to suggest changes to ensure H-1B visas were awarded to the highest-paid or most-skilled applicants to protect American workers.

In 2020, the Trump administration required employers to pay H-1B holders higher wages, a move they argued would discourage U.S. companies from turning to cheaper labor from abroad.

    contributed to this report.

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are two prominent figures who are sparking a debate over the H-1B visa program in the United States. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has been a vocal supporter of increasing the number of H-1B visas available to skilled foreign workers, arguing that it is essential for filling critical gaps in the tech industry. On the other hand, Ramaswamy, a biotech entrepreneur, has criticized the program for allegedly enabling companies to exploit foreign workers and suppress wages for American workers.

So, what exactly is the H-1B visa and why is it at the center of this debate? The H-1B visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows U.S. companies to temporarily employ foreign workers in specialty occupations that require specialized knowledge and skills. These occupations typically include fields such as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The visa is valid for up to three years, with the possibility of extension for an additional three years.

Supporters of the H-1B visa argue that it is crucial for filling high-demand positions in industries where there is a shortage of skilled workers. They believe that allowing companies to hire foreign talent helps to drive innovation, create jobs, and maintain the competitiveness of American businesses in the global market. However, critics argue that the program is being abused by companies to bring in cheap labor and displace American workers. They also point to instances of visa fraud and exploitation of foreign workers as evidence of the program’s shortcomings.

As the debate over the H-1B visa continues to unfold, it is important to consider the complexities and nuances of the program. While it is clear that the visa plays a significant role in shaping the U.S. labor market, finding a balance between meeting the needs of American businesses and protecting the rights of both foreign and domestic workers remains a challenging task. Stay tuned as Musk and Ramaswamy’s debate sheds light on the ongoing discussions surrounding the H-1B visa program.

Musk and Ramaswamy defend foreign worker visas, sparking MAGA backlash

    CNN
     —

Social media posts by Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy arguing in favor of expanding the visa program for highly skilled workers have set off a debate among supporters of President-elect Donald Trump over how the program should fit into the incoming administration’s aggressive immigration agenda.

Musk and Ramaswamy, whom Trump has tapped to lead his Department of Government Efficiency, defended companies who use workers on H-1B visas, arguing tech companies — including those owned by Musk — depend on foreign workers to operate. But their message rankled some of Trump’s most loyal defenders who expect his administration to crack down on immigration and promote American labor.

Trump restricted access to foreign worker visas during his first term and has targeted the H-1B program in past remarks. But during the 2024 campaign, Trump signaled openness to giving some foreign-born workers legal status if they graduated from a US university.

In a social media post on Wednesday, Musk said US tech companies need “double” the amount of engineers working in America today and compared the benefits of the program to a professional sports team recruiting the best talent from around the world.

“If you want your TEAM to win the championship, you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be. That enables the whole TEAM to win,” Musk wrote on X.

“I am referring to bringing in via legal immigration the top ~0.1% of engineering talent as being essential for America to keep winning,” Musk wrote in another post on Thursday. “Thinking of America as a pro sports team that has been winning for a long time and wants to keep winning is the right mental construct.”

Ramaswamy, a first-generation US citizen whose parents immigrated from India, concurred with Musk while defending companies that look outside the US for labor, arguing tech companies hire engineers who were born outside the US or born to American immigrants because “American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence,” citing portrayals of smart students in TV sitcoms “Boy Meets World,” “Saved By The Bell” and “Family Matters” as evidence.

“Our American culture has venerated mediocrity over excellence for way too long (at least since the 90s and likely longer). That doesn’t start in college, it starts YOUNG,” he wrote on Thursday. “A culture that celebrates the prom queen over the math olympiad champ, or the jock over the valedictorian, will not produce the best engineers.”

The support for foreign workers sparked attacks from MAGA supporters who are concerned that an expansion of the H-1B program could undermine their wish to see immigration curbed under Trump’s administration. Loyal Trump backers like far-right activist Laura Loomer, conservative pundit Ann Coulter and former Rep. Matt Gaetz have criticized the two tech entrepreneurs over their stance.

“We welcomed the tech bros when they came running our way to avoid the 3rd grade teacher picking their kid’s gender – and the obvious Biden/Harris economic decline,” Gaetz wrote in a social media post on Thursday. “We did not ask them to engineer an immigration policy.”

Musk and Ramaswamy’s comments also drew condemnation from former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who responded to Ramaswamy’s post by calling on the incoming administration to prioritize American workers over foreign workers.

“There is nothing wrong with American workers or American culture. All you have to do is look at the border and see how many want what we have. We should be investing and prioritizing in Americans, not foreign workers,” Haley wrote on Thursday.

Musk and Ramaswamy’s position has found support among some Democrats as well.

“They get it partially right, absolutely,” Colorado Gov. Jared Polis told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins on “The Source” Thursday night, saying that he applauded their recognition of the value of immigrant entrepreneurs while hoping that they also see the role that lower-skilled immigrants have in other sectors of the American economy, such as agriculture and construction.

“There are millions of Americans that work for companies that were founded by immigrants. Those jobs wouldn’t exist today if we didn’t let those immigrants in,” Polis said.

The H-1B visa program allows 65,000 highly skilled workers to immigrate to the US each year to fill a specific job and grants another 20,000 visas to such workers who have received an advanced degree in the US. Economists have argued the program allows US companies to maintain competitiveness and grow their business, creating more jobs in the US. The program is often associated with the tech sector, where companies have a high demand for specialized workers. Musk came to the US as a foreign student and later worked on an H1-B visa.

Trump has previously opposed H-1B visas, sharply criticizing them during his first presidential campaign as a vehicle for “abuse.” In a 2016 statement, Trump attacked the H-1B program as a method for US companies to bring foreign workers into the country “for the explicit purpose of substituting for American workers at lower pay.”

In 2020, Trump restricted access to H-1B visas on several occasions, part of the administration’s effort to curb legal immigration while responding to the changing economic conditions brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.

But in his most recent presidential campaign, Trump has appeared more tolerant of highly skilled foreigners coming to work in the US. In a podcast interview in June, Trump said he wants to grant permanent residency to any foreign national who graduates college in the US.

“What I want to do, and what I will do is – you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically, as part of your diploma, a green card to be able to stay in this country,” Trump said on the “All In” podcast.

Musk’s clash with members of Trump’s base over the visa issue marks another chapter in the tech billionaire’s growing influence in the president-elect’s orbit. After Musk led the opposition to a bipartisan government funding bill that was ultimately scrapped once Trump came out against it, Democrats began derisively labeling the tech mogul “President Musk” to suggest Musk his dictating policy goals to Trump. During remarks at a conservative activist gathering in Arizona on Sunday, Trump pushed back on the attacks from Democrats.

“No, he’s not taking the presidency. I like having smart people,” he said. “They’re on a new kick. ‘Russia, Russia, Russia,’ ‘Ukraine, Ukraine, Ukraine,’ all the different hoaxes. The new one is ‘President Trump has ceded the presidency to Elon Musk.’ No, no, that’s not happening.”

Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy are facing backlash from the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) community after publicly defending foreign worker visas. Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and Ramaswamy, a prominent biotech entrepreneur, recently spoke out in support of H-1B visas, which allow skilled foreign workers to come to the United States for employment.

In a series of tweets, Musk argued that H-1B visas are essential for attracting top talent to American companies and fostering innovation. He emphasized the importance of a diverse workforce in driving technological advancements and economic growth.

Ramaswamy echoed Musk’s sentiments, stating that H-1B visas play a crucial role in filling gaps in the labor market and fueling entrepreneurship. He emphasized the need for a more flexible and inclusive immigration system to support the U.S. economy.

However, their statements have sparked a backlash from supporters of former President Donald Trump and the MAGA movement, who view H-1B visas as a threat to American jobs and workers. Critics have accused Musk and Ramaswamy of prioritizing profits over the interests of American workers and undermining efforts to prioritize domestic employment.

The debate over foreign worker visas continues to be a contentious issue in the United States, with advocates on both sides of the argument. As Musk and Ramaswamy defend their stance, it remains to be seen how the MAGA backlash will impact their public image and business endeavors.
