  • Atlanta Falcons’ rookie sensation Michael Penix Jr., applauded by former coach Mike Smith, sparks hope for a resurgence in the franchise’s future

Atlanta Falcons’ Rising Star: Michael Penix Jr.

In his recent debut as a starter for the Atlanta Falcons, Michael Penix Jr. showcased remarkable potential, drawing admiration from former head coach Mike Smith. Smith, a seasoned figure in the football realm, commended Penix for his leadership qualities and impressive arm strength, which became evident during his three-game stint to close the regular season.

Penix’s performance, stepping in for the established Kirk Cousins, was nothing short of promising. Throughout his starts, he exhibited a completion rate of 58%, accumulating 737 passing yards, three touchdowns, three interceptions, and a rushing score. This display of skill and composure under pressure solidified the belief that Penix, the eighth overall draft pick in 2024, could be the long-awaited answer to the Falcons’ quarterback conundrum.

Raheem Morris’ Optimism for the Future

Looking ahead, Falcons head coach Raheem Morris expressed his enthusiasm for what Penix can bring to the team in the upcoming seasons. Morris’s confidence in Penix’s ability to lead the offense reflects a strategic shift in the Falcons’ quarterback landscape, hinting at a potential changing of the guard.

As the Falcons contemplate their next moves regarding Cousins, options abound, from trading or releasing him to retaining him as a backup. However, with Penix poised to take the reins in 2025, the organization seems committed to nurturing his talent and fostering a new era of Falcons football.

    Mike Smith’s Insightful Perspective

Drawing from his coaching tenure with the Falcons, Smith brings a unique perspective to the discussion surrounding Penix’s emergence. Having been instrumental in drafting franchise quarterback Matt Ryan in 2008, Smith understands the significance of identifying and developing young quarterback talent.

Smith’s vote of confidence in Penix as the future face of the Falcons’ offense underscores the belief that, despite current challenges such as salary cap constraints and dead money issues, Atlanta is on the right path towards revitalizing its team dynamics. The endorsement from a seasoned coach like Smith serves as a testament to Penix’s potential to steer the Falcons towards a brighter future on the gridiron.

In conclusion, Michael Penix Jr.’s meteoric rise in the Atlanta Falcons’ ranks symbolizes a beacon of hope for the franchise and its loyal fan base. With supportive figures like Raheem Morris and Mike Smith backing his journey, Penix stands poised to usher in a new era of success and resilience for the Falcons, marking a promising chapter in the team’s storied history.

The Atlanta Falcons may have found their future star in rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr. The young sensation has already caught the eye of former coach Mike Smith, who has praised Penix’s talent and potential to lead the team to success.

Smith, who coached the Falcons from 2008 to 2014, recently spoke highly of Penix’s abilities, saying, “Michael Penix Jr. is a special talent and has the potential to be a game-changer for the Falcons. His athleticism, arm strength, and football IQ make him a unique talent that can take this team to new heights.”

Penix, who was drafted by the Falcons in the third round of this year’s NFL draft, has already shown flashes of brilliance in training camp and preseason games. His ability to read defenses, make quick decisions, and deliver pinpoint passes has impressed coaches and teammates alike.

With Penix at the helm, the Falcons have a promising future ahead. His dynamic playmaking ability and leadership qualities have sparked hope for a resurgence in the franchise’s fortunes. Fans are eagerly anticipating what the young quarterback can bring to the team and are excited about the potential for success in the upcoming season.

As the Falcons prepare for a new era under Penix’s leadership, there is a sense of optimism and excitement surrounding the team. • Target’s DEI decision sparks boycott debate

Recently, retail giant Target made a controversial decision regarding their Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives that has sparked a heated debate and calls for boycotts.

In a statement released by Target, the company announced that they would no longer be requiring employees to participate in DEI training sessions. Instead, Target stated that they would be focusing on fostering a more inclusive workplace through other means, such as employee resource groups and mentorship programs.

This decision has received mixed reactions from the public, with some praising Target for taking a different approach to DEI and others criticizing the move as a step backwards in promoting diversity and equality in the workplace.

Supporters of the boycott argue that DEI training is essential in educating employees about systemic racism, unconscious bias, and other important issues that impact marginalized communities. They believe that by eliminating these training sessions, Target is failing to address the root causes of inequality within their organization.

On the other hand, those in favor of Target’s decision argue that mandatory DEI training can sometimes be ineffective or even counterproductive. They believe that fostering a more inclusive workplace culture through other means, such as employee resource groups and mentorship programs, can be a more impactful approach to promoting diversity and equality.

As the debate rages on, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact Target’s reputation and bottom line. In the meantime, customers and employees alike are left to grapple with the question of whether or not to support the retail giant in light of their controversial DEI decision.

  • Sparks expected to fly at Kash Patel’s Senate confirmation hearing for FBI director

President Donald Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, Kash Patel, is expected to trade barbs with lawmakers in his confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

Patel, a former public defender, Department of Justice official and longtime Trump ally, will join the Senate committee at 9:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, when lawmakers are anticipated to grill the nominee on plans detailed in his 2023 book to overhaul the FBI, his crusade against the “deep state” and his resume, as Democrats argue the nominee lacks the qualifications for the role.

The president and his allies, however, staunchly have defended Patel, with Senate Judiciary member Sen. Marsha Blackburn, R-Tenn., arguing that Democrats are “fearful” of Patel’s nomination and confirmation due to “what he’s going to reveal” to the general public.

“They are very fearful of Kash Patel, because Kash Patel knows what Adam Schiff and some of the others did with Russia collusion, and they know that he he knows – the dirt on them, if you will – and I think they’re fearful of what he’s going to do and what he’s going to reveal,” Blackburn said on Fox News on Sunday.

WHO IS KASH PATEL? TRUMP’S PICK TO LEAD THE FBI HAS LONG HISTORY VOWING TO BUST UP ‘DEEP STATE’

Patel, a New York native, worked as a public defender in Florida’s Miami-Dade after earning his law degree in 2005 from Pace University in New York City.

Patel’s national name recognition grew under the first Trump administration, when he worked as the national security advisor and senior counsel for the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence under the leadership of Rep. Devin Nunes, R-Calif. Patel became known as the man behind the “Nunes Memo” – a four-page document released in 2018 that revealed improper use of surveillance by the FBI and the Justice Department in the Russia investigation into Trump.

Patel was named senior director for counterterrorism at the National Security Council in 2019. In that role, he assisted the Trump White House in eliminating foreign terrorist leadership, such as ISIS chief Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2019 and al Qaeda terrorist Qasim al-Raymi in 2020, according to his biography. His efforts ending terrorist threats under the Trump administration came after he won a DOJ award in 2017 for his prosecution and conviction of 12 terrorists responsible for the World Cup bombings in 2010 in Uganda under the Obama administration.

Following the 2020 election, Patel remained a steadfast ally of Trump’s, joining the 45th president during his trial in Manhattan in the spring of 2024, and echoing that the United States’ security and law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, need to be overhauled.

‘JUST LIKE TRUMP’: ISIS MURDER VICTIM KAYLA MUELLER’S PARENTS ENDORSE PATEL FOR FBI FOLLOWING MILITARY OP ROLE

Patel underscored in his 2023 book, “Government Gangsters,” that “deep state” government employees have politicized and weaponized the law enforcement agency – and explicitly called for the revamp of the FBI in a chapter dubbed “Overhauling the FBI.”

“Things are bad. There’s no denying it,” he wrote in the book. “The FBI has gravely abused its power, threatening not only the rule of law, but the very foundations of self-government at the root of our democracy. But this isn’t the end of the story. Change is possible at the FBI and desperately needed.”

“The fact is we need a federal agency that investigates federal crimes, and that agency will always be at risk of having its powers abused,” he wrote, advocating the firing of “corrupt actors,” “aggressive” congressional oversight over the agency and the complete overhaul of special counsels.

FORMER TRUMP OFFICIALS REJECT WHISTLEBLOWER CLAIM THAT FBI DIRECTOR NOMINEE KASH PATEL BROKE HOSTAGE PROTOCOL

Patel adds in his book: “Most importantly, we need to get the FBI the hell out of Washington, D.C. There is no reason for the nation’s law enforcement agency to be centralized in the swamp.”

Trump heralded the book as a “roadmap” to exposing bad actors in the federal government and said it is a “blueprint to help us take back the White House and remove these Gangsters from all of Government.”

Patel has spoken out against a number of high-profile investigations and issues he sees within the DOJ in the past few years. He slammed the department, for example, for allegedly burying evidence related to the identity of a suspect who allegedly planted pipe bombs outside the headquarters of the Democratic and Republican parties in Washington, D.C., a day ahead of Jan. 6, 2021.

‘BEACON OF SELFLESSNESS’: ISIS VICTIM KAYLA MUELLER HONORED AT CONGRESSMAN’S SWEARING-IN 10 YEARS AFTER DEATH

Patel has also said Trump could release both the Jeffrey Epstein client list and Sean “Diddy” Combs party attendee lists, which could expose those allegedly involved in sex and human trafficking crimes.

Senate Democrats received an anonymous whistleblower report that was publicly reported Monday alleging Patel violated protocol during a hostage rescue mission in October 2020, an allegation Trump’s orbit has brushed off.

The whistleblower claimed that Patel leaked to the Wall Street Journal that two Americans and the remains of a third were being transferred to U.S. custody from Yemen, where they had been held hostage by Houthi rebels, before the hostages were actually in U.S. custody. Illinois Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee, obtained the whistleblower report.

A transition official pushed back on the report in a statement to Fox News Digital on Tuesday, saying Patel has a “track record of success.”

‘WHEN THEY FAIL, AMERICANS DIE’: TRUMP SOURCE BLASTS FBI, URGES SWIFT CONFIRMATION OF KASH PATEL AS DIRECTOR

“Mr. Patel was a public defender, decorated prosecutor, and accomplished national security official that kept Americans safe,” the official said. “He has a track record of success in every branch of government, from the courtroom to congressional hearing room to the situation room. There is no veracity to this anonymous source’s complaints about protocol.”

Alexander Gray, who served as chief of staff for the White House National Security Council under Trump’s first administration, called the allegation “simply absurd.”

Patel’s nomination comes after six of Trump’s nominees were confirmed by the Senate, including Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth – who also was viewed as a nominee who faced an uphill confirmation battle.

The Senate schedule this week was packed with hearings besides Patel’s, with senators grilling Secretary of Health and Human Services nominee Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Wednesday and also holding the hearing for Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination to serve as director of national intelligence.

Patel heads into his hearing armed with a handful of high-profile endorsements, including the National Sheriffs’ Association and National Police Association.

Carl and Marsha Mueller, the parents of ISIS murder victim Kayla Mueller, also notably endorsed Patel, Fox News Digital exclusively reported on Tuesday. Patel helped oversee a military mission in 2019 that killed ISIS leader al-Baghdadi, who was believed to have repeatedly tortured and raped Kayla Mueller before her death in 2015.

Patel “loves his country. He loves the people of this country,” Marsha Mueller told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview via Zoom on Monday morning. “To us, you know, he is a person that we would go to for help. And he is so action oriented.”

Just like Trump,” Carl Mueller added to his wife’s comments on Patel’s action-motivated personality.

Fox News Digital’s Anders Hagstrom contributed to this report.

The upcoming Senate confirmation hearing for Kash Patel, the nominee for FBI director, is expected to be a fiery one as sparks are anticipated to fly during the proceedings.

Patel, a former aide to Rep. Devin Nunes and a key figure in the Trump administration’s efforts to discredit the Russia investigation, has faced criticism and controversy over his past actions and statements. His nomination has been met with skepticism and concern from both Democrats and some Republicans.

During the hearing, senators are expected to grill Patel on his role in the Russia investigation, his views on law enforcement and national security, and his plans for leading the FBI. With tensions running high and partisan divisions deepening, the confirmation hearing is likely to be a contentious and contentious affair.

As the spotlight shines on Patel and his qualifications to lead the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, all eyes will be on the Senate chamber to see if he can weather the storm and secure the votes needed to become the next FBI director. Stay tuned for updates and analysis as the drama unfolds.

  • ‘Today’ Host Dylan Dreyer Quietly Lists New York Apartment for $2.5 Million—as She Sparks Debate With Divisive Babysitting Rules

“Today” show anchor and mother of three Dylan Dreyer has quietly listed her New York City apartment for $2.5 million, eight years after she and husband Brian Fichera purchased the elegant abode.

Dreyer, 43, and Fichera, 38, purchased the two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo in June 2016, according to property records, just a few months before they welcomed Calvin, the first of their three sons, in December.

With the addition of sons Oliver, 5, and Rusty, 3, the couple may well be ready for a more spacious dwelling.

Dreyer—who is a co-host on the third hour of “Today,” alongside Al Roker and Sheinelle Jones—and cameraman Fichera first attempted to sell the property in November of last year, according to records.

But just two weeks after the apartment was put on the market for $2,495,000, the listing was taken down, only to be restored days later.

It was most recently relisted a few days into January for the same price.

The condo, which was built in 2008, sprawls across 1,491 square feet and features floor-to-ceiling windows with views of the lush landscaping of Battery Park below.

The listing photos reveal the lengths that Dreyer and Fichera went to maximize the space in their second bedroom, which serves as a dedicated space for their kids. The bedroom offers a three-level bunk bed, a colorful rug, and animal-themed storage bins as well as a wall with built-in storage.

Dreyer has previously hinted at plans to move out of her Manhattan condo. In January 2022, she joked that while some might believe the space had become too tight for her family of five, she was determined to make it work for as long as possible.

She captioned the image: “‘You have to move,’ they said. ‘You’ll never fit in your apartment,’ they said. ‘Time for a bigger place,’ they said.

“This is how you do it in NYC. I think they all fit just fine … for now.”

The news of her home hitting the market comes just after the “Today” star sparked fierce debate with her babysitting instructions calendar.

Dreyer offered a glimpse into her chaotic life as an on-air talent and busy mom of three when she posted an image of the very in-depth instructions she leaves her in-laws when they babysit—sparking a furious debate among her social media followers in the process.

“How much fun would it be to have me as your daughter-in-law??” she questioned while sharing a photo of her sons’ weekly schedule, which included instructions for everything from meals to bathtime.

“I think I’m being helpful! Sound off: helpful or impossibly annoying???”

Speaking to Today.com about the calendar system, Dreyer insisted that her mother-in-law, Denise, appreciates the level of detail: “My mother-in-law babysits often. She comes down from Boston to help whenever we ask.

The talk show host revealed that, although her mother-in-law wouldn’t admit if she was annoyed with the schedule, Dreyer believes she appreciates it.

“My mother-in-law wouldn’t tell me if she didn’t like it, but I think she finds it helpful so she doesn’t have to think and can instead just enjoy the boys.

  • Controversial Firing of USDA Inspector General Sparks Legal Debate

Phyllis Fong, the inspector general of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was escorted out of her office on Monday following her refusal to comply with a termination order from the Trump administration, according to sources.

Fong, a veteran of 22 years with the department, contested her dismissal, claiming it lacked adherence to proper procedures. In an email, she argued the termination was not lawful, supported by the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency.

The move is part of a broader dismissal of 17 federal watchdogs by Trump, described as a ‘Friday-night purge,’ drawing criticism and potential legal disputes.

    (With inputs from agencies.)

The recent controversial firing of the USDA Inspector General has sparked a heated legal debate among government officials, watchdog groups, and legal experts. The abrupt dismissal of the Inspector General, who was responsible for overseeing the agency’s operations and investigating allegations of misconduct, has raised concerns about potential political interference and the erosion of government accountability.

Critics argue that the firing was a blatant attempt to stifle oversight and accountability within the USDA, as the Inspector General had been actively investigating several high-profile cases of alleged wrongdoing within the agency. They claim that the decision to remove the Inspector General was politically motivated and aimed at protecting powerful interests within the USDA.

Supporters of the firing, on the other hand, argue that the Inspector General had overstepped their authority and was not fulfilling their duties effectively. They claim that the dismissal was necessary to ensure proper governance within the agency and to address concerns about the Inspector General’s conduct.

Legal experts have weighed in on the controversy, with some questioning the legality of the firing and others defending the government’s right to remove an Inspector General for any reason. The debate has raised important questions about the independence of government watchdogs, the limits of executive power, and the need for robust oversight mechanisms to hold government officials accountable.

As the legal debate continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the controversy surrounding the firing of the USDA Inspector General will impact government transparency, accountability, and the rule of law.

It was through her off-court endeavors that she met her now-partner. Kournikova and Iglesias, the son of Spanish singer and former soccer star Julio Iglesias, began dating in 2001 after she appeared in his music video for ‘Escape’.

They have welcomed three children together, including twins Lucy and Nicholas, as well as Mary. However, the greatest mystery surrounding their relationship is if the couple have tied the knot or not.

The ‘Bailando’ singer has previously insisted he wasn’t bothered about getting married but has also referred to Kournikova as ‘my wife.’

When questioned about referring to Anna as his ‘wife’ in 2012, he clarified: ‘It was just meant to be sweet in the moment. I honestly didn’t mean to confuse people. I thought it’d be easier for the audience to understand than if I said “my girl.”

‘I’ve never really thought marriage would make a difference. Maybe it’s because I come from divorced parents, but I don’t think you love someone more because of a piece of paper.

‘And nowadays, it’s not taboo to have kids and not be married. What makes a difference is that you’re a good parent, period.’

Meanwhile, Iglesias’s brother, Julio Jr, may have accidentally let their relationship status slip in a 2023 interview on Spanish program Y Ahora Sonsoles.

‘My mother has seen me get married, my sister Chábeli get married, she has seen Ana get married… Enrique didn’t have a big wedding,’ he casually said, referring to his mom Isabel Preysler.

After stepping away from tennis, Kournikova has settled into family life with both she and Iglesias keeping a relatively low profile.

While the former tennis star has kept her life out of the spotlight, the singer-songwriter has been more open about their family life.

‘I’m relaxing at home with the kids, enjoying taking them to school and watching them grow,’ he said at the 2024 40 Music Awards.

‘I have twins that are six and a girl who is four, so every day they grow so fast.

‘I want to enjoy that. In 24 hours they’re already grown.’

The couple currently share a home in Miami, where they raise their three children.

Prior to becoming involved with Enrique, Anna was in a long-term relationship with professional ice hockey player Pavel Bure.

In a shocking turn of events, tennis legend Anna Kournikova made her first public appearance in over two years, sparking major concern among fans and followers.

The former professional tennis player, known for her stunning looks and powerful playing style, appeared frail and noticeably thinner than in previous years. Many fans took to social media to express their worries about Kournikova’s health and well-being.

Some speculated that the 40-year-old may be struggling with health issues or facing personal challenges, while others called for her privacy and respect during this difficult time.

Kournikova, who famously dated singer Enrique Iglesias and retired from professional tennis in 2003, has kept a low profile in recent years, leading to increased speculation about her whereabouts and well-being.

As fans continue to express their concerns and support for Kournikova, many are hoping for further updates on her condition and the reasons behind her sudden appearance.

  • Trump’s Return Sparks Worry About Cuts To Medicaid, Disability Services

Disability advocates are preparing to fend off potentially seismic cuts to Medicaid and community-based services now that President Donald Trump is back at the White House and Republicans are in control on Capitol Hill.

Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives are reportedly circulating a “menu” of possible options to slash more than $5 trillion in spending in order to fund tax cuts and other Trump priorities. Options outlined in a document obtained by Politico show that up to $2.3 trillion could come from Medicaid.

If such cuts were to become reality, that would represent nearly a third of projected Medicaid spending over 10 years, according to KFF, a nonprofit that conducts health policy research.

    Advertisement – Continue Reading Below

That’s raising major concerns for disability advocates who have been pushing for years to see greater investment in Medicaid home and community-based services, the nation’s primary system of supports for people with developmental disabilities.

“It would be hard to overstate how serious these threats are,” said Zoe Gross, director of advocacy at the Autistic Self Advocacy Network. “Medicaid is a lifeline program for our community — we need to make it clear that it should be expanded, not looted to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.”

Advocates have been warning for years that the Medicaid home and community-based services system is under extreme pressure. A recent survey of hundreds of disability service providers nationwide found that 69% turned away new clients and 39% closed programs or services in the previous year and over a third said they were considering additional program cuts.

Among the options that Republicans are reportedly weighing is shifting Medicaid to a “per-capita cap system.” Currently, the federal government provides matching grants to states to help pay for the cost of care for anyone eligible for Medicaid, no matter how expensive. But, under a per-capita cap system, the government would provide a set amount of money for each enrollee leaving states to make up any difference in cost.

The draft document also lists lowering the matching funds that the federal government provides states for Medicaid, implementing work requirements for the program and other options to squeeze savings.

“We have concerns that when federal Medicaid funding is reduced, states must find new funding to balance the shortfall in state budgets. If new funding cannot be found, optional services like community-based services for people with IDD are often reduced, leading to longer wait lists for (home and community-based services) and higher rates of unnecessary and expensive institutionalization,” said Elise Aguilar, senior director of federal relations at the American Network of Community Options and Resources, or ANCOR, which represents disability service providers across the nation.

All of this has advocates experiencing déjà vu from Trump’s first term as president when Republicans in Congress tried to switch Medicaid to a per-capita cap system.

“Some of the proposals that we are hearing about are eerily similar to what was proposed in 2017, like fundamentally changing the structure of Medicaid,” said Nicole Jorwic, chief of advocacy and campaigns at Caring Across Generations, an organization advocating for caregivers and people who rely on them. “This would put access to home (and) community-based services at extreme risk, increase waiting lists and further exacerbate the direct care workforce crisis.”

A broad coalition of over 200 groups representing people with disabilities, family caregivers, seniors and care workers came together this month in a letter to leaders of the House and Senate to push back against any cuts to Medicaid.

“We are deeply concerned about recent statements from some Congressional leadership supporting proposals that would deeply cut Medicaid funding. Medicaid is already lean and efficient,” reads the correspondence organized by The Disability and Aging Collaborative and the Consortium for Constituents with Disabilities. “We strongly oppose per-capita caps, block grants, work requirements, restrictions on eligibility, barriers to enrollment and any other cuts or harmful changes to the Medicaid program. The result is the same: taking away coverage from people with disabilities, older adults, and others who cannot otherwise afford health care and long-term services and supports.”

Advocates now say they’re meeting with lawmakers and activating their members to speak up about the importance of Medicaid to this population.

“Whether the cuts come in the form of a work requirement (or) per-capita cap it all means lowering of the federal dollars going into Medicaid and there is not a state budget that could account for that loss,” Jorwic said. “People with disabilities and their caregivers should be tuned into any changes and cuts to Medicaid, as well as threats to special education services and prepared to share how any cuts would be detrimental.”

As rumors swirl about former President Donald Trump’s potential return to office, many are expressing concern about the implications for crucial social programs like Medicaid and disability services.

Throughout his presidency, Trump proposed numerous cuts to Medicaid, a program that provides health coverage to millions of low-income Americans. These cuts would have drastically reduced access to vital healthcare services for some of the most vulnerable members of society.

Additionally, Trump’s administration made efforts to roll back protections for individuals with disabilities, such as attempting to weaken the Americans with Disabilities Act and cutting funding for programs that support disabled individuals.

With Trump potentially making a comeback, advocates for Medicaid and disability services are worried that these essential programs could once again be on the chopping block. It is crucial for lawmakers and citizens alike to stay informed and vocal about the importance of protecting these critical services for those who depend on them.

  • DeepSeek Chinese AI chatbot sparks market turmoil for rivals

Shares in major US technology firms have plunged after the rapid rise of a low-cost chatbot built by a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) firm.

The DeepSeek app, which was launched last week, has overtaken rivals including OpenAI’s ChatGPT to become the most downloaded free app in the US.

US tech giants including AI chip-maker Nvidia, Microsoft and Meta all saw their share prices drop on Monday.

China’s chatbot was reportedly developed for a fraction of the cost of its rivals, raising questions about the future of America’s AI dominance and the scale of investments US firms are planning.

Last week, OpenAI joined a group of other firms who pledged to invest $500bn (£400bn) in building AI infrastructure in the US.

President Donald Trump, in one of his first announcements since returning to office, called it “the largest AI infrastructure project by far in history” that would help keep “the future of technology” in the US.

DeepSeek is powered by the open source DeepSeek-V3 model, which its researchers claim was developed for around $6m – significantly less than the billions spent by rivals.

But this claim has been disputed by others in AI.

The researchers say they use already existing technology, as well as open source code – software that can be used, modified or distributed by anybody free of charge.

DeepSeek’s emergence comes as the US is restricting the sale of the advanced chip technology that powers AI to China.

To continue their work without steady supplies of imported advanced chips, Chinese AI developers have shared their work with each other and experimented with new approaches to the technology.

This has resulted in AI models that require far less computing power than before.

It also means that they cost a lot less than previously thought possible, which has the potential to upend the industry.

After DeepSeek-R1 was launched earlier this month, the company boasted of “performance on par with” one of OpenAI’s latest models when used for tasks such as maths, coding and natural language reasoning.

Silicon Valley venture capitalist and Trump advisor Marc Andreessen described DeepSeek-R1 as “AI’s Sputnik moment”, a reference to the satellite launched by the Soviet Union in 1957.

At the time, the US was considered to have been caught off-guard by their rival’s technological achievement.

DeepSeek’s sudden popularity has startled stock markets in Europe and the US.

ASML, the Dutch chip equipment maker, saw its share price tumble by more than 10% while shares in Siemens Energy, which makes hardware related to AI, plunged by 21%.

“This idea of a low-cost Chinese version hasn’t necessarily been forefront, so it’s taken the market a little bit by surprise,” said Fiona Cincotta, senior market analyst at City Index.

“So, if you suddenly get this low-cost AI model, then that’s going to raise concerns over the profits of rivals, particularly given the amount that they’ve already invested in more expensive AI infrastructure.”

Singapore-based technology equity advisor Vey-Sern Ling told the BBC it could “potentially derail the investment case for the entire AI supply chain”.

But Wall Street banking giant Citi cautioned that while DeepSeek could challenge the dominant positions of American companies such as OpenAI, issues faced by Chinese firms could hamper their development.

“We estimate that in an inevitably more restrictive environment, US access to more advanced chips is an advantage,” analysts said in a report.

The company was founded in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng in Hangzhou, a city in southeastern China.

The 40-year-old, an information and electronic engineering graduate, also founded the hedge fund that backed DeepSeek.

He reportedly built up a store of Nvidia A100 chips, now banned from export to China. Experts believe this collection – which some estimates put at 50,000 – led him to launch DeepSeek, by pairing these chips with cheaper, lower-end ones that are still available to import.

Mr Liang was recently seen at a meeting between industry experts and the Chinese premier Li Qiang.

In a July 2024 interview with The China Academy, Mr Liang said he was surprised by the reaction to the previous version of his AI model.

“We didn’t expect pricing to be such a sensitive issue,” he said.

“We were simply following our own pace, calculating costs, and setting prices accordingly.”

Additional reporting by Joao Da Silva and Dearbail Jordan.

Recently, the introduction of DeepSeek, a cutting-edge Chinese AI chatbot, has sent shockwaves through the market, causing turmoil for its competitors. DeepSeek’s advanced technology and ability to understand and respond to complex queries in real-time has made it a formidable force in the chatbot industry.

With its deep learning capabilities and sophisticated algorithms, DeepSeek has quickly gained a loyal following among users seeking intelligent and personalized interactions. Its ability to provide accurate and relevant information has set it apart from other chatbots on the market.

As a result, rival companies are scrambling to keep up with DeepSeek’s rapid rise to prominence. Some have even reported a decline in their user base as customers flock to the new and improved chatbot.

The emergence of DeepSeek has not only raised the bar for AI chatbots but has also highlighted the importance of innovation and staying ahead of the curve in the ever-evolving tech industry. As competitors work to adapt and improve their own products, one thing is clear: DeepSeek has set a new standard for AI chatbots, and the market may never be the same again.

  • Timothée Chalamet Sparks Outrage With Jimmy Carter Joke On ‘SNL’

Timothée Chalamet is under fire for making an off-color joke about former president Jimmy Carter during his appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”

The remark, made just weeks after Jimmy Carter’s passing at age 100, sparked gasps from the studio audience and Timothée Chalamet is now facing a wave of criticism online.

Controversial Jimmy Carter Joke By Timothée Chalamet Leaves ‘SNL’ Fans Furious

The incident occurred during the “Bungee” skit, where Chalamet played an instructor at a workout class. At one point, he told participants to perform “The Jimmy Carter,” leading everyone to hang limp in their harnesses, mimicking death.

The audience reaction was immediate, with audible gasps filling the studio. Viewers at home were equally taken aback, expressing their disapproval on social media.

One viewer criticized the joke for being “totally disrespectful and out of line,” adding, “And yes, I have a sense of humor and love the show, but that was just horrible and too soon. I hope his family didn’t see that.”

“Too soon and not funny! The whole skit was crap,” another shared.

“Someone’s going to hell for that one,” one person commented on the clip of the sketch shared on YouTube.

Timothée Chalamet Gets Blasted For ‘SNL’ Joke

Others were harsher in their judgment. “Wow, ‘SNL,’ a Jimmy Carter is dead joke? Not funny, not appropriate,” said one user.

Another declared the remark could even cost Chalamet his Oscar chances for his portrayal of Bob Dylan in “A Complete Unknown.”

“If I were a betting man, I would’ve bet on Timothée Chalamet winning an Oscar for his Dylan portrayal, but his dead Jimmy Carter joke on ‘SNL’ a full month before voting ends changes that. Insensitive and really immature. Just unnecessary,” the fan wrote.

“Was funny until that Jimmy Carter line. Totally disrespectful and out of line,” someone else expressed. “And yes I have a sense of humor and love the show but that was just horrible and too soon … I hope his family didn’t see that.”

Chalamet and “SNL” have yet to respond to the controversy, but the backlash highlights the fine line between humor and insensitivity. While “Saturday Night Live” has long been known for its edgy comedic takes, this moment has left many questioning the show’s judgment in tackling such a recent loss.

Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024, after nearly two years in hospice care, was the longest-living president in U.S. history. A tireless advocate for peace and human rights, his family and admirers celebrated his legacy in statements and tributes.

“My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love,” his son, Chip Carter, said in a statement. “The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honoring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs.”

Carter’s funeral service, held on January 9 at the Washington National Cathedral, was attended by prominent world leaders, including presidents Trump, Biden, Obama, Bush, and Clinton.

During his presidency, Carter achieved several significant milestones that continue to define his legacy. One of his most notable accomplishments was the Camp David Accords in 1978, where he brokered a historic peace agreement between Egypt and Israel. This landmark achievement in Middle East diplomacy earned widespread praise and demonstrated his unwavering commitment to peace.

Amid an energy crisis, Carter prioritized energy conservation and reducing America’s dependence on foreign oil. He established the Department of Energy and championed renewable energy initiatives, encouraging environmental stewardship to address the nation’s growing energy concerns.

Carter also made human rights a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy, emphasizing the importance of holding nations accountable for their treatment of citizens. His focus on human rights influenced U.S. relations with the Soviet Union and other countries during his tenure, setting a new standard for diplomatic engagement.

In addition to these achievements, Carter expanded environmental protections by designating millions of acres of wilderness in Alaska and increasing the scope of national parks.

In a recent episode of “Saturday Night Live,” actor Timothée Chalamet caused controversy with a joke about former President Jimmy Carter. During his monologue, Chalamet quipped, “I heard Jimmy Carter is the only president who can still fit into his inauguration suit. That’s because he was so skinny back then, not because he’s dead or anything.”

The joke immediately drew backlash from viewers, who accused Chalamet of being insensitive and disrespectful towards the 39th president. Many took to social media to express their outrage, with some calling for an apology from the actor.

Chalamet has yet to address the controversy, but it serves as a reminder that even seemingly harmless jokes can have unintended consequences. It’s important to be mindful of the impact of our words, especially when it comes to public figures and sensitive topics.
