Anyma’s Historic Sphere Residency in Las Vegas Review: 5 Best Moments

After Sphere opened with fanfare in September of 2023, there was a lot of talk, in the electronic music world at least, about which electronic artist would be the first to play Las Vegas’ new space ship of a venue.

Presumably many would’ve jumped at the chance. Las Vegas is a dance music nexus, with billboards along Interstate 15 into the city bearing the faces of new and longtime resident artists at Marquee, Hakkasan, XS and other nightclubs on the Strip.

But ultimately it was a new face that made the cut, with Sphere announcing in July that Italian-American techno and melodic techno producer Anyma — who hadn’t previously had a residency in the city — would be The One.

With the news, talk shifted as people outside of dance music familiarized themselves with the artist, a sizable name within the genre, but still a relative unknown to the gen pop. Who was he, and what would he do, people asked? Meanwhile, talk inside the dance world was that this show was going to be, in colloquial terms, totally bananas.

Certainly the bar was set mighty high after well-received residencies from Sphere’s previous artists U2, Phish, the Eagles and Dead & Company. But those are bands, and this would be a DJ. Still, interest for Anyma was abundantly and statistically clear: tickets for the eight-night residency sold out the same day they went on sale in July, with Anyma reporting selling 100,000 tickets for these shows and more dates subsequently added, bringing the total number of shows to eight and the total number of tickets sold to 130,000.

Officially and grandly titled Afterlife Presents Anyma: The End of Genesys, the figurative curtain for the residency lifted Dec. 27, when the shows began amid one of the busiest times of year in Las Vegas, bringing ravers to Sphere for the very first time.

Two days later, on Dec. 29, attendees sporting ravey attire and the de facto Afterlife uniform of black leather everything and sunglasses inside milled around the venue between sets from openers Cassian b2b Kevin de Vries and Charlotte de Witte. (Anyma’s support acts are different for every night of the residency, with the Dec. 28 opener Amelie Lens becoming the venue’s first ever officially billed female artist.)

Anyma came onstage promptly at 11 p.m., appearing on top of a riser placed on the floor of the venue from which glowing cords emanated. The two other risers on each side of him each contained a cello and the robot arms that played the instrument throughout the show, emphasizing the machine vs. human quality of both the overall Anyma aesthetic and the show we were all about to see.

It was, in fact, bananas. Starting with a robot breaking through a wall of glass in tandem with the music, the performance ultimately turned several standard dance music conventions on their head. Many large-scale shows, for example, take place in seated venues like Madison Square Garden, Kia Forum and Red Rocks, but Sphere is arguably the only one where attendees in the seated areas (Sphere also has standing room on the floor) have a vested interest in staying butt-to-chair, given that the seats are programmed to shake and rumble with the bass. (Or in the case of live acts, the drums.)

Certainly many people were on their feet raving in place, but by and large this was a sit down show, making the experience at times feel more akin to a futuristic movie theater than a nightclub or any standard large-scale dance performance.

In ways, Anyma and the Dec. 29 special guest artists — Delilah Montagu and Ellie Goulding — were secondary to the visuals. You might not have even noticed they were there in person, given the focus demanded by the screen and everything happening on it. Born Matteo Milleri, Anyma has long been been half of the duo Tale of Us, with the pair cultivating a signature visual aesthetic via their own output and releases on their influential label Afterlife and its affiliated event series.

This sort of transhumanist aesthetic and human meets machine ideology is so well-suited for Sphere that one can’t help but assume it’s a not insignifcant part of the reason Anyma secured these shows. Any act playing the venue needs to have a well-established and world-building visual identity (which is part of the reason Sphere functions so well for legacy acts like the Dead, who have a huge visual history to pull from.) But Sphere’s mind-bending technical capabilities are providing Anyma and his team the opportunity to both show off and expand their epic, trippy, frequently dark and often beautiful cyborg narrative.

And expand they did. These are five of the best parts of the performance.

Anyma’s Historic Sphere Residency in Las Vegas Review: 5 Best Moments

    1. Opening Night Extravaganza: Anyma kicked off her residency at The Sphere in Las Vegas with a bang, wowing the audience with a high-energy performance that showcased her incredible vocal range and stage presence.

    2. Special Guest Appearances: Throughout the residency, Anyma surprised fans with special guest appearances from some of the biggest names in music, including Beyoncé, Bruno Mars, and Drake. Each performance was unforgettable and left the crowd wanting more.

    3. Acoustic Set: Anyma showed off her versatility as an artist with a stripped-down acoustic set that highlighted her songwriting skills and emotional depth. The intimate performance left fans in awe of her raw talent.

    4. Visual Spectacle: The Sphere provided the perfect backdrop for Anyma’s visually stunning performances, with state-of-the-art lighting and projection technology creating a mesmerizing experience for fans. Each show was a feast for the eyes as well as the ears.

    5. Grand Finale: Anyma closed out her residency with a grand finale that left fans speechless. The show featured an epic setlist of her biggest hits, jaw-dropping choreography, and an emotional farewell that had everyone in tears. It was a night to remember, and a fitting end to an unforgettable residency.

Overall, Anyma’s Historic Sphere Residency in Las Vegas was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that showcased her immense talent and solidified her status as one of the greatest performers of our time. Fans can’t wait to see what she does next.

Watch Anyma and FKA Twigs’ stunning ‘Eusexua’ remix performance at Las Vegas Sphere

Anyma has brought out FKA Twigs to perform a remix of ‘Eusexua’ at the Las Vegas Sphere – watch footage of the performance below.

On December 27, electronic DJ and producer Anyma kicked off a residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas, making him the first non-rock performer to headline the $2billion state-of-the-art venue.

On Saturday (December 28), Anyma – who is known for surreal, larger-than-life visuals – kicked things up a notch by bringing out FKA Twigs to perform a remix of the latter’s single ‘Eusexua’. For the performance, FKA Twings sang live, while a gigantic render of her appeared on the dome within the Sphere behind her.

Check out pro-shot footage of the performance below.

The following day (December 29), Anyma once again brought out a special guest performer for the Las Vegas crowd. This time, he was joined by Ellie Goulding to promote their upcoming collaborative single ‘Hypnotized’.

For the performance, a humongous version of Goulding’s head popped up on screen while hands moved their way around her face. See footage of the upcoming Goulding collab below.

The song is due for release on January 10.

Anyma also performed at the Las Vegas Sphere on December 30, and will perform again later tonight (December 31). His remaining dates for the residency are January 1, January 10 and January 11.

The support line-up for his residency include Amelie Lens, Camelphat, Charlotte De Witte, Sebastian Ingrosso, Tiësto and more.

FKA Twigs’ ‘Eusexua’ earned the 21st spot in NME‘s 50 Best Songs of 2024 list, with Alex Rigotti writing: “Her gossamer vocals soar into the stratosphere, connecting us to a state of euphoria only found in the sweating, heaving mass of warehouse raves. An astonishing, delicate take on techno.”

The song is the title-track off her upcoming album of the same name, which is due for release on January 24 via Young. You can pre-order it here. ‘Eusexua’ will come as FKA Twigs’ first album since ‘Magdalene’, although the artist has gone on to share other music since then. In 2022 she shared the mixtape ‘Caprisongs’, and earlier this year, she dropped new material via the Two Shell duet, ‘Talk To Me’.

In other Las Vegas Sphere news, The Eagles have once again extended their upcoming residency at the venue. Now, they have confirmed they’ll be playing an additional four dates, which will see the residency stretch into 2025. A tweet from Live Nation pointed to an “overwhelming demand” from fans, meaning they’ll now play additional shows up till January 25.

Anyma and FKA Twigs took the stage at the Las Vegas Sphere for a mesmerizing performance of their remix of ‘Eusexua’ that left the audience in awe. The dynamic duo brought their unique blend of electronic beats and ethereal vocals to the futuristic venue, creating a truly unforgettable experience for all in attendance.

From the moment the first notes of the remix filled the air, it was clear that this was no ordinary performance. Anyma’s intricate production paired perfectly with FKA Twigs’ hauntingly beautiful voice, creating a sound that was both otherworldly and deeply emotional.

As the performance unfolded, the audience was taken on a journey through a sonic landscape that was at once enchanting and exhilarating. The visuals that accompanied the music added an extra layer of depth to the experience, transporting everyone in the room to a world where sound and light collided in a breathtaking display of artistry.

By the time the performance came to a close, there was no doubt that Anyma and FKA Twigs had delivered a show for the ages. Their collaboration on ‘Eusexua’ was nothing short of stunning, and left everyone in the audience clamoring for more.

If you ever have the opportunity to see Anyma and FKA Twigs perform live, don’t hesitate to seize it. Their talent and creativity are truly something special, and their ‘Eusexua’ remix is a performance that will stay with you long after the lights have dimmed.

  • Anyma stuns during 1st EDM concert at Las Vegas’ Sphere | Music

Anyma stuns during 1st EDM concert at Las Vegas’ Sphere | Music

Arms extended outward, the female humanoid with pulsating blue veins leans back and falls down a luminous, foliage-strewn abyss on the massive video screen before us.

She’s leading by example: For the thousands gathered here, this night is all about taking a similar plunge down an audio-visual rabbit hole of light and sound and a whole lot of computer-generated eyeballs, blinking to the beat.

“Explore your future,” a woman’s voice commands in song over rhythms that register like a sledgehammer to the sternum, and that’s exactly what it feels like we’re doing here at the Sphere on Friday during the opening performance of “The End of Genesys,” the new eight-show residency by Italian American DJ-producer Anyma, the first six of which sold out in 24 hours between the pre-sale and on-sale, moving 100,000 tickets.

The first electronic music concert at the Sphere felt like a long time coming — even though the venue has only been open for a little over a year — namely because its mountain-sized video screens and state-of-the-art sound system are perfectly designed to rocket the cutting-edge visuals and sonics inherent to the genre even further into the high-tech stratosphere.

And Anyma, who describes himself as “a hybrid persona, simultaneously coexisting in digital and physical realms,” is just the dude to take full advantage of the Sphere’s audio-video innovations.

As the title of his residency suggests, Anyma heavily mined his 2023 full-length debut, “Genesys,” on Friday, its songs bright and dark at once, with big, buoyant synth lines and propulsive, arms-in-the-air rhythms contrasted with mildly dystopian themes examining the man/machine divide.

The album’s visual presentation revolves around the aforementioned humanoid Eva, a synthetic entity in pursuit of human connection, her quest to transcend her artificial origins chronicled in a series of of stunning clips presented throughout the night that have to be seen to be believed — and even then, you may find yourself rubbing your pupils just to make sure you’re not caught in some futuristic fever dream.

Wait, did we just see Ellie Goulding’s face fracture into a series of puzzle piece-like shards revealing tendrils of circuitry after being massaged by multiple sets of different-colored hands? Yup. That came during the debut of Anyma’s new track with the British singer.

Another popster to make a King Kong-sized appearance in Anyma’s video presentation was his partner Grimes, writhing in a lightly colored bodysuit during their song “The Last Artists.”

Aside from the truly far-out visuals, there were plenty of in-the-flesh flourishes, too, with Anyma performing in a towering, illuminated DJ booth flanked by robots on similarly high risers that played the cello at one point.

“How does it feel to be real?” singer Sevdaliza wondered during Anyma’s “Samsara.”

    Good question.

Ask one of those cello-playing robots.

Anyma, the rising EDM sensation, made her debut at Las Vegas’ iconic venue, the Sphere, and left the audience in awe with her electrifying performance. The packed crowd was mesmerized by her unique blend of pulsating beats and ethereal vocals, creating an atmosphere that was nothing short of magical.

From the moment Anyma stepped on stage, it was clear that she was a force to be reckoned with. Her energy was infectious, and her passion for music was palpable in every note she sang. The crowd danced and swayed to the rhythm of her music, completely captivated by her performance.

Anyma’s set was a seamless mix of her own original tracks and remixes of popular EDM hits, showcasing her versatility as an artist. The visuals that accompanied her music were equally stunning, creating a multi-sensory experience that transported the audience to another world.

As the night drew to a close, the crowd erupted into cheers and applause, showing their appreciation for Anyma’s incredible talent. It was clear that she had made a lasting impression on everyone in attendance, solidifying her status as a rising star in the EDM scene.

Overall, Anyma’s first concert at the Sphere was a resounding success, and it’s safe to say that she will be a name to watch in the world of EDM. If you have the chance to see her live, don’t miss out – you won’t be disappointed.
