Hannah Storm’s breast cancer diagnosis was a shock. Now the veteran sports journalist is helping others understand their risk.
As a trailblazer in the world of sports journalism, Hannah Storm has always known exactly what to say on camera. But when she received a breast cancer diagnosis in January 2024, the legendary journalist was lost for words.
“It really came as a shock,” Storm, 62, tells Yahoo Life. “It was something out of the blue.”
Storm was diagnosed with non-invasive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a breast cancer in which cells that line the milk ducts of the breast become cancerous. Even though she had no symptoms or family history of breast cancer, Storm has always mindful about her health. She had more than 20 mammograms and ultrasounds over the years, and “absolutely nothing had come up.” But this time, her physicians detected a problem.

In the year since her diagnosis, Storm has channeled her experience into being an advocate for early detection, raising greater awareness of hereditary cancers and the crucial role of genetic testing. Here’s a look at the lessons Storm has learned on the cancer journey that transformed her life.
Preventative screenings saved her life
“Had I not been really good about my yearly screening, I never would have known it was there,” Storm says.
At the beginning of 2024, Storm had a biopsy and received her official cancer diagnosis soon after. Storm turned to her friend, tennis legend Chris Evert, who battled ovarian cancer and underwent a preventative double mastectomy due to having the BRCA1 variant. Evert connected Storm to her doctor, Dr. Elisa Port, whom she called right away.
“She said, ‘You’re not going to die from this,’” Storm recalls. “And right away, I was like, ‘Wow, thank you.’ Just hearing those words was pretty powerful.”
Always one to establish a game plan, Storm wanted to know the next best steps to take, including undergoing a lumpectomy. When her physician broached the subject of genetic testing, Storm admitted she didn’t really know what that was. But when asked about her family history, she didn’t have many answers to provide besides her father’s death from cancer. She’s not alone: A survey conducted by Myriad Genetics in 2022 found that although half of women (51%) say they have no family history of breast or ovarian cancer, many are not sure if that’s true.
Storm says she “was just so blown away by the fact that it was just a simple blood test and all the incredible amount of information that resulted from that.”
Know your risks
Early detection saved Storm’s life, and she’s hoping to empower others to practice that same diligence. Just a year after her own diagnosis, Storm has also teamed up with Myriad Genetics’s MyRisk with RiskScore hereditary cancer test to get educated on the importance of understanding your risk for hereditary cancers and how to get tested. The test evaluates 48 genes to help identify patients’ risk of developing 11 types of hereditary cancer.
While Storm understands that some people might be reluctant to learn about their risk, she views it as a way of taking control of one’s future. “I think people are like, ‘Well, I don’t want to know. It’s super scary,’” she says. “I look at it as, well, it’s super empowering.”
Those who find out that they’re at a heightened risk level shouldn’t panic, however. Instead, Storm says that’s the time to practice diligence.
“That gives you a game plan for you and your health care provider. You have the science there, you know what your risk level is,” she says. “Do you need to be hyper vigilant now? Even as a young person, do you need to undergo screening? Should you be having mammograms at a young age?”
Storm will pass what she learned on to her three daughters, who she says will be undergoing the Myriad test.
Treat your health appointments with urgency
Storm says it’s essential to stick to a rigorous preventative care schedule.
“One of the things I learned is how many people don’t prioritize themselves, especially women and their own health,” she says, noting that she treats her health appointments with the same urgency as business matters. “Moms are working, taking care of kids or taking care of their parents. We tend to take care of everybody else but put ourselves last.”
Storm says that it takes a “family effort,” and frequently tells the male athletes she works with to urge their wives and girlfriends to maintain their health appointments. “Whatever you have to do, just help her out,” she tells them. “Nobody is an island.”
A healthy diet and exercise regimen are also things that Storm focuses on. Always a fan of exercise, Storm relies on a daily weight-lifting routine, “which is really important for your bone health.” A hip replacement just a couple of months after her breast cancer surgery has required a lot of physical therapy, but Storm also enjoys cycling and walking.
Her cancer diagnosis also made her more aware of the danger of processed foods. However, she’s always been “pretty healthy. I try not to abuse my health all the time.”
Advocate for yourself
Storm’s willingness to advocate for herself throughout her cancer journey is reflective of her experience navigating the world of sports journalism, which hasn’t always been hospitable to women.
“I took a lot of abuse,” Storm says of her early days in sports. “I definitely did the best I could at the time, but the one thing that I did not let it do was defeat me. I was like, ‘You are not going to run me out of this or turn me away from following my dreams. It’s not going to happen.’ I would never give somebody like that that kind of agency and power over my life.”
Though she’s faced a lot of obstacles in her ambition to make it in sports journalism, Storm is now grateful that she was able to “knock down some doors and smash some ceilings, and just provide a sort of a reference for women in terms of what the viable career options look like in sports.”
Storm won’t be in attendance at the Super Bowl this weekend. However, she will be enjoying the big game the way she always does: hosting a Super Bowl party at her home.
“I would like to see history,” she says. “So I think would be cool to see Kansas City three-peat!”
Hannah Storm’s breast cancer diagnosis was a shock. Now the veteran sports journalist is helping others understand their risk.Hannah Storm, known for her work as a sports journalist and anchor for ESPN, was blindsided when she received a breast cancer diagnosis in 2008. The news was a shock to Storm, who had always been diligent about her health and never expected to face such a serious health issue.
But instead of letting the diagnosis defeat her, Storm decided to use her platform and experience to help educate others about breast cancer and the importance of early detection. She has been an advocate for breast cancer awareness, sharing her own story and encouraging women to be proactive about their health.
Storm’s message is clear: early detection can save lives. She knows firsthand the importance of regular screenings and being proactive about your health. By sharing her story, Storm hopes to inspire others to take charge of their own health and understand their risk for breast cancer.
In addition to raising awareness, Storm has also been involved in fundraising efforts for breast cancer research and support programs. She has used her platform to shine a light on the importance of funding research and supporting those affected by breast cancer.
Hannah Storm’s journey with breast cancer has been a challenging one, but she has emerged stronger and more determined than ever to make a difference. By sharing her story and advocating for early detection, Storm is helping others understand their risk and take control of their health. Her bravery and resilience serve as an inspiration to us all.

Umpire Pat Hoberg fired by MLB for sharing sports gambling accounts with friend who bet on baseball
NEW YORK (AP) — Umpire Pat Hoberg was fired by Major League Baseball on Monday for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games and for intentionally deleting electronic messages pertinent to the league’s investigation.
MLB opened the investigation last February when it was brought to its attention by the sports book, and Hoberg did not umpire last season. While MLB said the investigation did not uncover evidence Hoberg personally bet on baseball or manipulated games, MLB senior vice president of on-field operations Michael Hill recommended on May 24 that Hoberg be fired.
Commissioner Rob Manfred said Monday he upheld Hill’s decision. Among the highest-rated umpires at judging the strike zone, Hoberg can apply for reinstatement no earlier than 2026 spring training.
MLB said the friend made 141 baseball bets between April 2, 2021 and Nov. 1, 2023 totaling almost $214,000 with an overall win of nearly $35,000.
“The strict enforcement of Major League Baseball’s rules governing sports betting conduct is a critical component of upholding our most important priority: protecting the integrity of our games for the fans,” Manfred said in a statement. “An extensive investigation revealed no evidence that Mr. Hoberg placed bets on baseball directly or that he or anyone else manipulated games in any way.
“However, his extremely poor judgment in sharing betting accounts with a professional poker player he had reason to believe bet on baseball and who did, in fact, bet on baseball from the shared accounts, combined with his deletion of messages, creates at minimum the appearance of impropriety that warrants imposing the most severe discipline. Therefore, there is just cause to uphold Mr. Hoberg’s termination for failing to conform to high standards of personal conduct and to maintain the integrity of the game of baseball.”
Now 38, Hoberg made his big league debut in 2014. During Game 2 of the 2022 World Series, he had an unprecedented “umpire’s perfect game” by accurately calling balls and strikes on all 129 taken pitches, according to computer tracking.
“I take full responsibility for the errors in judgment that are outlined in today’s statement,” Hoberg said in a statement. “Those errors will always be a source of shame and embarrassment to me. Major League Baseball umpires are held to a high standard of personal conduct, and my own conduct fell short of that standard.
“That said, to be clear, I have never and would never bet on baseball in any way, shape, or form. I have never provided, and would never provide, information to anyone for the purpose of betting on baseball. Upholding the integrity of the game has always been of the utmost importance to me. I apologize to Major League Baseball and the entire baseball community for my mistakes. I vow to learn from them and to be a better version of myself moving forward.”
Under the umpires’ collective bargaining agreement, Hoberg had the right to appeal Hill’s decision, triggering the hiring by MLB of a neutral fact finder who made a report to Manfred.
MLB said the sports book notified it that Hoberg opened an account in his name on Jan. 30 last year and an electronic device associated with the account had accessed an account in the name of another person., who had bet on baseball.

Major League Baseball has announced the firing of umpire Pat Hoberg after it was revealed that he shared sports gambling accounts with a friend who placed bets on baseball games. This shocking revelation has raised concerns about the integrity of the game and the role of umpires in ensuring fair play.Hoberg, who has been a Major League umpire for over a decade, was caught sharing his accounts with a friend who was known to be a frequent bettor on baseball games. This unethical behavior has led to his immediate dismissal from the league, with MLB commissioner Rob Manfred stating that such actions will not be tolerated.
The incident has sparked outrage among fans and players alike, with many questioning the trustworthiness of umpires and their ability to make unbiased calls on the field. The integrity of the game is paramount, and any actions that compromise this must be dealt with swiftly and decisively.
As the dust settles on this scandal, MLB will undoubtedly be looking to tighten its regulations and ensure that such behavior does not occur again in the future. The firing of Pat Hoberg serves as a stark reminder that the game of baseball must be upheld with the highest standards of fairness and integrity.

Popular comedian Jim Gaffigan recently opened up about his regrets of not pursuing a career in the NFL. In an interview with FOX Sports Radio, Gaffigan admitted, “It’s sad I didn’t play in the NFL. I think I could have been a great receiver or maybe a kicker. But hey, I guess it’s never too late to join a flag football league, right?”Gaffigan’s self-deprecating humor and love for sports have always been a big part of his comedy, so it’s no surprise that he would joke about his hypothetical football career. While he may not have made it to the NFL, Gaffigan continues to entertain audiences with his stand-up specials, TV shows, and movies.
Fans of Gaffigan can catch his latest comedy routines and projects, while also imagining what could have been if he had pursued his football dreams. Who knows, maybe we’ll see him on the field one day, making tackles and scoring touchdowns in his signature deadpan style.

It seems very likely the 49ers will pay quarterback Brock Purdy this offseason.
How large of a contract will the artist formerly known as ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ land? That remains to be seen. However, based on the quarterback market over the last two years, many predict the 25-year-old signal caller could be paid close to, if not more than $50 million per season.
And that includes ESPN’s Dan Graziano, who predicted the figures of Purdy’s impending deal with the 49ers in his latest 2025 offseason predictions column.
Graziano’s prediction: Four years, $196 million, $112 million guaranteed — which would be 10th among quarterbacks in average annual value.
“The threat of the franchise tag certainly gives the 49ers some leverage, and if Purdy is not determined to play hardball and max out his contract in the upper-$50-million-per-year range, there’s a deal to be made here,” Graziano wrote.
“Some of the people I talked to expect that the framework would likely build out from the contract Daniel Jones signed with the Giants two years ago (four years, $160 million with $81 million guaranteed). But it would obviously be adjusted upward for inflation and based on superior performance.”
This contract would be worth an average annual value of $49 million, which — as Graziano pointed out — is the 10th-highest behind Dallas’ Dak Prescott ($60M), Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence ($55M), Green Bay’s Jordan Love ($55M), Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow ($5M), Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1M), Detroit’s Jared Goff ($53M), Los Angeles Chargers’ Justin Herbert ($52.5M), Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson ($52M) and Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts ($51M).
Purdy is coming off a down 2024 NFL season, completing 300 of 455 passes (65.9 percent) for 3,864 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while recording 323 yards and five touchdowns on the ground in 15 games this season.
He did, however, lead the 49ers to consecutive NFC Championship Game appearances in each of his first two seasons, one of which resulted in a near Super Bowl LVIII win over the Kansas City Chiefs last year, something most of the quarterbacks on the aforementioned list have not done for their respective teams.
That has to be worth something, right?

In a stunning move, the San Francisco 49ers have reportedly signed quarterback Brock Purdy to a massive four-year, $196 million contract, according to ESPN predictions. The deal, which would make Purdy one of the highest-paid players in the league, is a clear sign of the team’s confidence in the young signal-caller.Purdy, who was drafted by the 49ers in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, has shown immense potential in his short time in the league. With a strong arm and impressive accuracy, he has quickly become a fan favorite in San Francisco.
ESPN’s prediction of Purdy’s massive contract is a testament to his potential and the high expectations the team has for him. If he can continue to develop and improve, he could lead the 49ers to great success in the coming seasons.
Fans will be eagerly awaiting official confirmation of Purdy’s contract, but if ESPN’s prediction is accurate, it could be a game-changer for the 49ers and their quest for another Super Bowl title. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

A Vox reader asks: Why do people pay more to watch men’s sports than women’s sports?
For all of Caitlin Clark’s feats on the basketball court — breaking all-time scoring records, taking the Iowa Hawkeyes to two national championships and getting the Indiana Fever to the WNBA playoffs — what might be more impressive is the attention she’s captured and the sheer amount of people who want to see her play and are willing to pay top dollar to watch her dish dazzling assists and launch 3-point daggers from the logo.
In her rookie season, Clark helped the Fever achieve the best attendance in the league — over 17,000 people per game, a 265 percent increase over last season — and their televised games regularly reached over 1 million viewers per contest. Scalpers were selling tickets outside the arena. At one point in the season, they were asking $250 for a ticket that usually went for under $100, while some secondary market sellers were looking for up to $9,000, CNN reported.
Clark’s emergence alongside a new generation of exciting rookies and ultra-talented, already-established veterans has created momentum for women’s basketball and more generally women’s sports. Mainly: People are finally willing to pay more to see women’s basketball? That raises the question: Why weren’t they already?
Why have women’s sports historically been less popular?
At the heart of this question is a pretty simple answer: Men have had decades-long head starts when it comes to sports and professional sporting leagues. To put it in perspective, women were allowed to compete in the 1900 Olympics in five sports; it wasn’t until the 2012 London Olympics that women competed in all of the sports that the men were.
Similarly, in the US, experts specifically point to Title IX — the federal law that bans gender discrimination at schools receiving federal aid — and its passing in 1972 as a watershed moment for gender equality in sports. Before that, US schools had no obligation to provide the same athletic opportunities to girls that they did for boys. It broke down existing barriers to entry, allowing women not only to compete but also receive equal financial opportunity tied to sports (e.g., college scholarships ). But when Title IX solidified women’s rights into law and protected them from discrimination, the NBA was already over 20 years old.
“The easy way to think about it is to look at the overall lack of investment,” Lindsey Darvin, an assistant professor at Syracuse University, told me. Darvin studies women’s sports and gender equity in the intercollegiate and professional sports industry. She said that the NBA, and any other major sports league, have had decades upon decades of resources, both external and internal, infused into them. Women’s leagues are, relatively speaking, still so young and don’t (yet) gather the same kind of attention.
“The amount of investment that’s been put into the NBA — it dwarfs what’s been put into the WNBA,” Darvin said. The WNBA was founded in 1996, almost 30 years ago. The same number of years on the NBA timeline would be the late ’70s, when the league was finally established and on the verge of a massive leap in popularity. While the WNBA is growing, it hasn’t seen the same kind of trajectory — at least not yet.
It took decades for teams like the Lakers, Yankees, Arsenal, Bruins, and Packers to become lucrative sports franchises that generate millions in revenue each year and play in arenas and stadiums in front of thousands of people. Some professional leagues count revenue in the tens of billions of dollars. Decades of investment — money, advertising, promotion, television deals, sponsorships, etc., — have turned teams and leagues into brand names.
That’s what you’re paying for when you’re purchasing a ticket. That’s also why a men’s pro sports ticket is usually going to be more expensive than a women’s.
How does marketing factor into it?
The last couple of years in women’s college basketball have shown us that women’s sports can challenge men’s in popularity — like, right now. At the 2024 Final Four, tickets for the women’s tickets on the secondary market were going double for the price of the men’s games.
The Caitlin Clark effect was in full motion, and the ratings for Clark and her cohort were at an all-time high. Clark’s last two games were the most-watched in history, averaging close to 14 million and, as The Athletic reported, eclipsed men’s sporting events like every World Series since 2019, every NBA Finals game since 2017, and every Daytona 500 since 2006.
“As a researcher, I don’t like to say the phrase that ‘the stars align’ because that just seems so kind of out there — but the stars aligning is a piece of it, and that’s what happened, right?” Darvin said, noting that Clark’s skill and flashy, appealing game; the success of the Iowa basketball team; and Clark’s marketability and her team’s underdog story were all factors in becoming a phenomenon.
But what intrigues Darvin is now that Clark has graduated and driven similar sellouts in the WNBA, is whether this can convince people — especially those in charge — that people are willing to spend more money to see women’s sports.
One of the trickier reasons about why men’s sports are valued over women’s is because that’s what we’ve been told they were more important for so long. Clark and Iowa basketball are one of the rare examples when investment, promotion, and media hammered home that Clark’s games were worth watching, worth paying for, and even more exciting than the men’s teams.
“You’re steered in directions through marketing, advertisements, and the media — you are basically told what you’re supposed to like and what you should pay for, and what you’re going to enjoy,” Darvin said. “And what is cool to enjoy and pay for has always been men’s sports.”
Essentially, we were told to value Caitlin Clark’s senior season in a way that hadn’t happened in women’s college basketball. But while Clark is the most recent barrier-breaker, she isn’t alone.
During her career, Serena Williams and her rivals were at times bigger stories than male tennis players. (Not unrelated: Tennis has been one of the better sports at striving for equal pay.) Simone Biles and the US women’s gymnastics team are bigger stories than the American men, and similarly, women’s figure skating is usually as popular as men’s at the Olympics. Those are all examples, Darvin said, where women athletes fare better when it comes to marketing and publicity.
The more women’s pro sports are publicized and marketed, the more people are willing to pay to see pro women athletes, and ostensibly the idea is that all this capital turns into growth, opportunity, and equality for women. With more money, perhaps the WNBA will be able to pay rookies more than $76,000 for their first season! A possible sign of progress: Unrivaled, a stateside professional 3×3 women’s league debuted in January with a $200,000 average salary per player and a multiyear media deal with TNT. Darvin also notes that college women athletes signing lucrative NIL deals are also changing the playing field and upping their media profiles.
If there’s one drawback it’s that if all goes according to plan, eventually we’ll get to the point (in the distant future) where women’s pro sports won’t be as accessible. Currently one of the debates around the NBA is that the ratings are down and whether that’s due to it being very expensive to watch or even attend a game. One of the best things about women’s pro sports and women’s basketball is that it’s affordable.
The WNBA’s Caitlin Clark has changed the game between men’s and women’s sportsCaitlin Clark, a rising star in the WNBA, has been making waves in the world of sports with her exceptional talent and skill on the basketball court. As one of the top prospects in the league, Clark has been proving that women can compete at the same level as men in professional sports.
With her incredible scoring ability, court vision, and leadership on the court, Caitlin Clark has been breaking down barriers and changing the perception of women’s sports. She has shown that women are just as capable as men when it comes to excelling in athletics and that gender should never be a limiting factor.
Clark’s success in the WNBA has not only inspired young girls to pursue their dreams in sports but has also sparked important conversations about gender equality in the world of athletics. By dominating on the court and earning respect from her peers and fans alike, Caitlin Clark has proven that women’s sports deserve just as much recognition and support as men’s sports.
As Caitlin Clark continues to make headlines and leave her mark on the WNBA, she is setting a new standard for what it means to be a female athlete in today’s society. With her determination, talent, and passion for the game, Clark is paving the way for future generations of women to thrive in the world of sports and beyond.
