  • Steph Curry’s sister voices Shai Gilgeous-Alexander issue over IG post – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Sydel Curry-Lee doesn’t play when it comes to her big bro Steph.

While she and Los Angeles Sparks star Cameron Brink discussed NBA MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander on their new “Straight to Cam” podcast, Sydel brought up one of SGA’s recent Instagram posts she took issue with.

“I have a bone to pick with him,” Sydel said. “I have a little sister bone to pick with him because he posts his fits and lyrics as captions. Whatever city he’s in, he tries to find lyrics that match the city. So he’ll post the fit, then he’ll post a good play from that game. So when he played in the Bay, he posted, ‘I was feeling like E-40 in the Bay, so I had to go dumbbbbb.’ Fire fit.

“Watching the move, he crosses up Stephen, goes behind the back and Stephen gets off balance. Great move. Cool. You posted the shot of it. But why are there like four other clips of him against Stephen and no other player gets that? No other post gets that.”

The post Sydel is referencing is from last season, after the Oklahoma City Thunder came to town for back-to-back games against Golden State. The Warriors suffered consecutive losses to Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder, including a 130-123 overtime loss on Nov. 18, 2023, in which SGA dropped 40 points.

The double victories led to Gilgeous-Alexander’s fastidious post, which included four slides with Steph in them.

“See, the little sister is coming out of both of us,” Brink responded. “I think it’s just because he’s Steph. … Everyone wants to be him.”

It still didn’t sit right with Sydel, who did her research on Gilgeous-Alexander’s Instagram page before sharing her final remarks.

“I’m searching his page and the last time he posted [an opposing player that much] was never. Never!” she said. “I don’t like that. Great player though. He should get MVP, in my opinion.”

While Sydel, like many others, believes Gilgeous-Alexander, who leads the league in points and is second in steals, should run away with the NBA’s most prestigious award, her thoughts on his social media presence off the court might not align.

Steph Curry’s sister Ayesha Curry recently took to Instagram to voice her concerns over an Instagram post made by Oklahoma City Thunder player Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. In the post, Gilgeous-Alexander shared a photo with a caption that seemed to imply he was not taking the COVID-19 pandemic seriously.

Ayesha Curry, who has been an advocate for following safety guidelines during the pandemic, expressed her disappointment in Gilgeous-Alexander’s post and urged him to be more responsible with his platform. She emphasized the importance of setting a good example for fans and followers, especially during these uncertain times.

Many fans have since rallied behind Ayesha Curry’s message, showing their support for her stance on the issue. It remains to be seen how Gilgeous-Alexander will respond to the criticism and whether he will take steps to address the concerns raised by Ayesha Curry and others.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Steph Curry drops funny quip after rising on NBA all-time scoring list – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Father Time has yet to catch up to Warriors superstar Steph Curry, well, for the most part.

Curry’s 21 points in Golden State’s stunning 116-109 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday night helped him leap Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer Ray Allen on the NBA’s all-time scoring list. His instant reaction?

“You see the gray hair?” Curry joked to ESPN’s Jorge Sedano after the game. “That just means you’re blessed to keep playing this game at a high level. I thank God every day that this is a space I’ve been able to live in for 16 years. The names, I passed [Allen Iverson] a couple weeks ago, Ray today — guys I grew up watching in my generation who inspire me to love the game the way I do.

“So it’s definitely special. Shout out to Ray.”

With Wednesday’s performance, Curry has reached 24,515 points throughout his 16-season NBA career, passing Allen’s 24,505. He now is just 300 away from Patrick Ewing and less than 700 from Jerry West for 25th.

Los Angeles Lakers megastar LeBron James leads the list with 41,474 points.

This season, Curry, who turns 37 on March 14, is averaging 22.3 points on 44.2-percent shooting from the field and 40.5 percent from 3-point range, with 4.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists in 31.7 minutes through 38 games.

Perhaps his hair is the only indication of his age catching up to him.

Steph Curry drops hilarious one-liner after moving up on NBA all-time scoring list – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry has been making history this season, as he continues to climb up the NBA all-time scoring list. And while he’s been piling up points on the court, he’s also been dropping some funny quips off the court.

After a recent game where Curry moved up another spot on the all-time scoring list, he was asked about his accomplishment. With his signature grin, Curry responded, “I guess I’ve been shooting too much, huh?”

The comment drew laughs from reporters and fans alike, showcasing Curry’s lighthearted and self-deprecating sense of humor. Despite his impressive scoring numbers, Curry always manages to keep things in perspective and stay humble.

As Curry continues to make his mark on the league, both with his scoring and his wit, fans can expect more memorable moments both on and off the court. And who knows, maybe another funny quip is just around the corner.

  • Steph Curry sends Warriors brass simple NBA trade deadline message – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

SAN FRANCISCO – Six minutes and 46 seconds had passed before Steph Curry took his first shot Friday night against the Phoenix Suns, missing a 3-pointer that rolled around the rim before falling out. The optimist in Curry has always been one of his greatest strengths. On this night, Curry’s a realist after the Warriors’ 130-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns.

Going an entire first quarter where he takes one shot isn’t going to be enough. The Warriors going into halftime with Curry only having five shot attempts is always going to put them in an 11-point halftime deficit — or worse.

“There’s an understanding of motion offense to try and use gravity at times,” Curry said in the Warriors locker room after the door. “You try and get on the ball at times. The defenses have kind of shifted a little bit more consistently to try and take away off-ball stuff. And it was a slow start tonight, which, that can’t happen.

“It’s on me, it’s on all of us to try and figure out how to get the ball moving, create good shots and use all the threats we have in this room. It did not go as planned tonight. I don’t ever want to be in a situation where you get five shots in a half. That’s not good basketball.”

Curry’s first two points were a case of mano a mano, me vs. you – Curry was the winner.

Those two points had nothing to do with him running around the court. Andrew Wiggins soared to grab a missed 3-point attempt by Royce O’Neale, dribbled down the floor and fed the rock to Curry at the top of the arc.

With Bradley Beal right in his grill, Curry held the ball down low, faked it left, then faked it right before flying by Beal to his left and delivered a finger roll over Mason Plumlee.

Does there need to be more of a sense of urgency to just get the ball in Curry’s hands and let him go?

“It should have been that a little earlier,” Curry said. “But also, you know that there’s going to be attention on the ball. Try to go pick-and-roll, try to get in the seams, try to create looks off of that. Obviously, our struggle – that’s our, mine included – in the paint when we get an advantage trying to capitalize, to make teams have to honor that, that’s been a struggle.”

The Warriors are at the bottom of the NBA in finishing around the rim, in converting layups. On shots within four feet Friday night, the Warriors were 10 of 24. The Suns were 16 of 18.

Curry’s comments on the Warriors’ offensive struggles are right in line with what he had to say about the upcoming Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline: Anything to win. He’s not going to disrupt, he’s not going to go above the team. But winning is all that matters. The sense of urgency is real.

The Warriors’ superstar isn’t the type to publicly make a problem. He also has created more headlines than usual this season, like calling the Warriors “mid” to close the 2024 calendar year.

“That’s not for me to make those decisions,” Curry said when asked if he wants to see a trade happen. “I want to win, so whatever it means to do that.”

Before the Warriors were blown out by 25 points against the Suns, Steve Kerr gave his most blunt assessment of his team. A team that he truly likes coaching. One he enjoys going to work with. Kerr also was a realist Friday night, even before the blowout loss.

Kerr was asked if the Warriors have enough talent to be a playoff team. The coach gave a resounding yes. Then he recognized, in the same answer, who the Warriors are right now.

A few hours later, to close a month where they entered it 16-16, went through it 8-8 and ended it at 24-24 overall, the Warriors went back to being .500.

“We’re not in a position where we can just say, ‘No, we’re good. Let’s stand pat.’ That’s the reality of where we are,” Kerr said. “[Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy’s] doing his due diligence, doing his job. If there’s something that makes sense. He’s going to do it.”

The day before, Kerr acknowledged talent wins out. This coming from a nine-time champion between being a player and coach who has emphasized the importance of culture and continuity. Kerr in that radio clip also alluded to Curry needing a second scoring option.

Just 48 hours prior to Phoenix burning them on their home court, the Warriors were flying high. They had just taken down the Western Conference’s cream of the crop in the Oklahoma City Thunder, without Draymond Green and Jonathan Kuminga. On the flip side, OKC still doesn’t have Chet Holmgren, and Alex Caruso was injured 22 seconds into the game.

In that feel-good win, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander dropped  52 points on the Warriors, including 21 in the first quarter and 31 in the first half. The Warriors got 18 points from Kevon Looney and 15 points out of Gary Payton II. Was that a replicable recipe to convince themselves they can make a run as is?

Looney’s 18 points tied a career high he set on March 23, 2023. The eight free throws he made eclipsed his previous career high by two. Payton’s 15 points beat his previous season high by three points, and were the most he had scored since another 15-point night on Oct. 29, 2023, the third game of last season.

The NBA is a player-driven league. The superstars are conductors in disguise, they dictate the show and they usually get what they want. Some will speak loudly of their desires, unbothered by the effect it could have on the team. Curry isn’t part of that category.

He knows his voice matters, and it’s being heard right now.

“Y’all will never know about that,” Curry said, being questioned if he would ever apply more pressure to the front office to get him what he wants. “We have conversations all the time. I want to win. Again, that’s not my job. I’m not a coach, I’m not a GM, I’m not an owner.

“It’s pretty clear where I stand on trying to make whatever necessary adjustments there are to win.”

In a recent meeting with Golden State Warriors management, superstar Steph Curry delivered a clear and concise message regarding the upcoming NBA trade deadline: “We’re ready to compete.”

Curry, who has been the face of the Warriors franchise for years, made it clear that he believes in the current roster and is confident in their ability to make a push for the playoffs. Despite facing some challenges this season, including injuries to key players, Curry remains optimistic about the team’s potential.

The Warriors have been the subject of trade rumors leading up to the deadline, but it seems that Curry is focused on staying the course and making the most of the talent already on the roster. With Curry leading the way, the Warriors have the potential to be a dangerous team in the postseason.

Warriors fans can take comfort in knowing that their star player is fully committed to the team’s success and is ready to lead them to victory. As the trade deadline approaches, it seems that the Warriors are content to stick with their current roster and make a run for the playoffs with Curry at the helm.

  • Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd announces shock career move: ‘Time to be a better husband’

Colin Cowherd has announced he is moving his daily Fox Sports talk show from Los Angeles to Chicago later this year.

Cowherd, who has spent the last decade in LA after relocating from Bristol, Connecticut in 2015, dropped the big news while speaking with Fox colleague Nick Wright on the latest episode of his YouTube podcast.

‘You know I’m moving to Chicago in the spring,’ the 61-year-old told Wright. It’s official. I’ve bought a house.’

When asked if it was the first time he was revealing the news to the public, Cowherd continued: ‘I don’t think they care because when you watch me on TV, you don’t care where I’m at do ya?’

The veteran sports commentator explained that he will spend ’85 percent’ of his time in the Illinois state and host ‘The Herd’ from the Big Ten Network studios near the Chicago River so that his wife Ann, whom he married in 2010, can be closer to her sister.

‘My wife has given a lot to my career and sacrifice,’ he added. ‘I love the city, she’s got her sister there, I’ve got a lot of friends there… and I think it’s just time to be a better guy, be a better husband.

‘I’ve bounced all over the country, and there’s some advantages and disadvantages to it, but I’m so excited to live in the Midwest, to live in a great city next to cousins.

‘I’m fired up, and my son wants to go to Northwestern here in a couple years maybe.’

As well as presenting, Cowherd will also continue to own and operate his independent media business, The Volume, which hosts ‘The Draymond Green Show’ and Shannon Sharpe’s ‘Club Shay Shay’ as well as his own podcast.

Last year, he claimed The Volume is now worth over $100million seven years after its launch.

Cowherd was recently declared the unlikely winner after a bombshell lawsuit was filed by an ex-Fox Sports employee against a number of the network’s biggest names.

Former hair stylist Noushin Faraji described him as ‘professional and respectful to her and their coworkers’, which came in stark contrast to several former and current colleagues accused of sexual harassment and discouraging her from speaking out.

Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd has left fans stunned with his recent announcement of a shock career move. In a heartfelt statement, the popular sports personality revealed that he will be stepping away from his broadcasting duties to focus on being a better husband.

Cowherd, known for his bold opinions and fiery debates on sports topics, explained that he has realized the importance of prioritizing his family and personal relationships. “I’ve spent so much time and energy on my career that I’ve neglected the most important people in my life,” he said. “It’s time for me to make a change and be there for my wife and children in a way that I haven’t been able to before.”

The decision has taken many by surprise, as Cowherd has been a fixture in the sports media industry for years. However, his dedication to improving his personal life and fostering stronger connections with his loved ones is commendable.

Fans and colleagues alike have expressed their support for Cowherd’s decision, applauding his courage and commitment to self-improvement. While his absence will surely be felt in the sports broadcasting world, it is clear that Cowherd’s priorities are now focused on his family.

We wish Colin Cowherd all the best in this new chapter of his life and commend him for his bravery in making such a significant career move. Here’s to being a better husband and father, Colin!

  • 3 observations after Sixers fall just short in high-scoring battle vs. Nuggets – NBC Sports Philadelphia

The Sixers fell a hair shy of pulling off a fifth consecutive win Friday night.

They lost a high-scoring battle to the Nuggets, dropping a 137-134 game at Wells Fargo Center.

The Sixers are now 19-28 overall. Denver is 29-19.

Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with a 42-point, nine-assist performance.

Guerschon Yabusele scored an NBA career-high 28 points on 12-for-17 shooting and Kelly Oubre Jr. put up 27 points.

Nikola Jokic posted 28 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds. Jamal Murray recorded 31 points and 11 assists.

The Sixers still had six players out, including Joel Embiid (left knee injury management) and Paul George (left pinkie finger extensor tendor injury).

Sixers head coach Nick Nurse said pregame that George is “day-to-day.” He said the Sixers plan for Embiid to practice Saturday and expect to have a better sense of his status after that.

The Sixers will play the Celtics on Sunday night in Philadelphia. Here are observations on their defeat to the Nuggets:

Jokic and Maxey feature in 1st quarter

Maxey committed three turnovers Friday in under two minutes. Jokic fed Aaron Gordon for a dunk and Nurse called timeout with his team trailing 14-6.

The Sixers faced the same size-related challenges present in their blowout loss last Tuesday to Denver. The Nuggets scored the night’s first 12 points in the paint.

As he routinely does, Yabusele sparked a Sixers run. He hit a wing three-pointer, stole the ball from Russell Westbrook and steamed forward for a coast-to-coast slam. The Sixers soon had their first lead.

Maxey shrugged off his shaky start and found his groove as an isolation scorer late in a 13-point, four-assist first quarter. He passed Kyle Korver for third place on the Sixers’ all-time made three-pointers list.

On the other end, Jokic appeared well on his way to a triple-double with nine points, six rebounds and six assists in the opening period. He casually diced up the Sixers’ defense and caused frequent problems with his transition ventures after defensive rebounds.

    Script flips with second-unit scoring

After the Sixers amassed 40-15 bench scoring edge in their win Wednesday over the Kings, the second-unit story was quite different Friday night.

Christian Braun and Julian Strawther combined to make five three-point shots in the first half. Denver scored the game’s first 19 bench points.

The Sixers still managed to stay close in an offense-centric first half. Oubre led a bench-heavy lineup well. He drove and finished forcefully, drew free throws and barely sat. He wound up logging 22 minutes and 29 seconds before halftime.

Every Sixers starter made at least one three-pointer in the first half. Yabusele went 4 for 5 from long distance and Justin Edwards shot 3 for 4.

The points flowed freely on both sides. Unless they turned the ball over, the Nuggets appeared destined to create a high-quality shot. Denver held a 73-69 lead at intermission and shot an incredible 66.7 percent from the floor over the first two quarters.

    Back-and-forth action late

Maxey capitalized on Denver’s lax transition defense in the third quarter, converting a layup and then a pull-up three just 18 seconds later.

Yabusele kept on scoring, too. Less than a minute after setting his new career high, Yabusele slammed in a big-time alley-oop dunk off an Edwards lob. On top of the Frenchman’s scoring variety, it was impressive to see Yabusele go at Jokic and grab his chances to either shoot comfortable jumpers or drive past the three-time MVP.

Again, neither defense had much success in the third quarter. A buzzer-beating Ricky Council IV three cut the Nuggets’ advantage to 103-100 going into the fourth period. Council made another corner triple early in the fourth quarter, then swiped a steal from Westbrook and dished to Oubre for a game-tying layup.

Adem Bona played a couple of excellent minutes after a Denver timeout — a dunk, a block, an offensive rebound and ample hustle. Ultimately, the Sixers were down 112-109 when Maxey checked back in with 8:25 left in the fourth quarter.

The Sixers substantially elevated their defensive level for a stretch in the fourth. Kyle Lowry did good work on several occasions against Gordon in the post. Maxey tightly contested jumpers that Murray and Braun air balled.

In the shotmaking department, the Sixers continued to receive plenty of contributions. Eric Gordon drilled back-to-back deep threes. Maxey sliced through the Nuggets’ defense for driving layups, Oubre nailed a corner three and the Sixers took a 128-125 lead.

Jokic and Maxey each starred in an entertaining, back-and-forth final few minutes. Jokic sunk multiple shots that the Nuggets needed, including a go-ahead three with 39.8 seconds remaining. His runner with 12.7 seconds to go gave Denver a 135-132 edge.

Out of the ensuing timeout, Oubre made a put-back layup off a Yabusele miss inside. The Sixers took up considerable time in the process, though.

After two Murray foul shots, Yabusele had to resort to a half-court heave before the final buzzer. It came up short and the Sixers’ 134 points were insufficient for a fifth straight win.

    1. Embiid’s dominance on full display: Despite the loss, Joel Embiid once again showed why he is one of the most dominant big men in the league. He put up an impressive stat line of 34 points, 11 rebounds, and 6 assists, showcasing his versatility and skill on both ends of the court.
    2. Lack of defensive intensity: The Sixers struggled to contain the Nuggets’ high-powered offense, allowing them to shoot over 50% from the field and 40% from three-point range. With key players like Ben Simmons and Matisse Thybulle out due to injury, the team’s defensive deficiencies were exposed, and they will need to address this moving forward.
    3. Offensive firepower not enough: Despite scoring 120 points, the Sixers couldn’t keep pace with the Nuggets’ explosive offense. Tobias Harris had a strong showing with 21 points, but the team as a whole lacked consistency and struggled to find their rhythm at key moments in the game. Moving forward, they will need to find ways to improve their offensive efficiency and execution in crunch time situations.

  • 15 Points From History: Ejim eyes Gonzaga’s all-time scoring record on the road next Thursday | All Gonzaga Sports

SPOKANE, Wash. — The Gonzaga women rallied past the Pacific Tigers, 68-64, Thursday afternoon in a game that saw guard Yvonne Ejim come within 15 points of breaking the school’s all-time scoring record.

Ejim led all scorers with 23 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, finishing 15 points shy of surpassing Heather Bowman’s record of 2,165 career points.

The guard battled foul trouble early, picking up her fourth foul with 20 seconds remaining in the third quarter. Although she spent most of the fourth quarter on the bench, Ejim returned with fewer than five minutes remaining and dominated down the stretch.

Gonzaga head coach Lisa Fortier praised her squad’s resilience during Ejim’s absence.

“Our team did a really nice job of weathering that storm when she was out. That’s something we talk about all the time,” Fortier said. “She is certainly the leader in charge, but we have a lot of other players who play really well. I certainly don’t like it when she’s out of the game, but I like to have her as an option because I think we play really well together when she’s in, too.”

Gonzaga fans would love nothing more than to see Ejim break the record at home when Gonzaga hosts Washington State next Saturday. However, the Bulldogs will head to Saint Mary’s next Thursday, and her teammates would rather she continue her dominance than save the record for a home game.

“Please don’t only score 14 next game just to get it here,” Gonzaga freshman guard Allie Turner said with a laugh.

When asked if she would rather break the record at home, Ejim said she doesn’t care where it happens — just that it does.

“I’ve thought about that [breaking it at home vs. on the road] in the back of my head. I’d like it to be at home, but again, we just got to play basketball and I don’t get a say in it. It would be cool to do it in the Kennel, but I just want to do it for Gonzaga, so I do care. But I don’t really care, I can’t really care,” she said with a smile.

The Bulldogs will hit the road to face Saint Mary’s on Thursday before returning home to host Washington State at 2 p.m. You can watch Gonzaga vs. Washington State live on SWX and stream it on SWXLocalSports.com.

  • Flyers trade Joel Farabee, Morgan Frost to Flames – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost played their last game with the Flyers on Thursday night.

The team sent both forwards to Calgary in a trade with the Flames. In return, the Flyers received Andrei Kuzmenko, Jakob Pelletier, a 2025 second-round pick and 2028 seventh-round pick.

Reports of a trade being in the works surfaced late in the second period of the Flyers’ 3-0 loss to the Islanders.

Farabee and Frost were both first-round picks of the Flyers. For a while, they were viewed as potential foundation pieces. But over this season and last, they became change-of-scenery candidates on a rebuilding team.

Despite having a career year last season, Farabee was challenged by the Flyers in the summer to take the next step. His production tapered off in the second half, which made this season an important one for his future.

The winger was recently a healthy scratch for three straight games as his scoring and overall effectiveness just hadn’t been there. Farabee, who turns 25 years old next month, was in the third year of a six-year, $30 million contract.

Frost, 25, was a pending restricted free agent in the final year of his two-year, $4.2 million contract. The playmaking center had gone through his struggles with trying to appease head coach John Tortorella. Over time, it seemed to take a toll on Frost mentally.

Moving on from Farabee and Frost could not have been an easy call for Danny Briere and company. Both players are still relatively young with some upside still there.

But the Flyers have taken a step back this season, giving the general manager more incentive to make changes and start planning for the offseason. The Flyers have a chance to be creative this summer with more cap space and assets. With the acquisition of the second-round pick, the Flyers have seven selections in the first two rounds of the 2025 draft (three first-rounders, four second-rounders).

And there are still five weeks before the March 7 trade deadline.

More: Why trade Farabee, Frost? How will Flyers react? Briere, Tortorella discuss

Kuzmenko is a Russian winger who turns 29 next week. He’s on an expiring contract with a $5.5 million cap hit, making him an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. Kuzmenko put up 39 goals and 74 points as a rookie in 2022-23 with the Canucks. With the Flames this season, he had four goals and 11 assists in 37 games.

Pelletier, 23, also comes to the Flyers on an expiring contract. He’s a pending restricted free agent who was a first-round pick of Calgary in 2019. He had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) and a plus-10 mark in 24 games this season.

The details of the trade have not yet been revealed, but it’s clear that the Flyers are making a bold move in hopes of improving their roster. Fans will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how this trade pans out for both teams.

  • CRAWFORD | A closer look: 4 key stats in Louisville’s 10-game win streak | U of L Sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — For Pat Kelsey and Louisville, there’s no looking back. Reporters could be forgiven if they struggled to come up with questions for a coach whose team has faced little resistance in reeling off 10 straight wins by an average of 13 points per game.

Beginning against Georgia Tech on Saturday in Atlanta (3.45 p.m., The CW), Louisville begins a stretch of games against four opponents who are a combined 6-32 in ACC play and have won just one of their past 27 games.

After Georgia Tech, Boston College (six-game losing streak), Miami (10-game losing streak) and. N.C. State (five-game losing streak) don’t inspire much fear.

As politely as possible, Kelsey was asked what concerns he might have playing against opponents who are so, um, unaccomplished.

“We have a very tough opponent tomorrow at Georgia Tech, extremely dangerous,” Kelsey said. “And they play very well at home, and we know we have our work cut out for us. Our guys have been really locked in on the process of preparation for them. . . . I am concerned with one game. The next one. I don’t even know who we play after this. I never do. I may peek at the schedule, just to see what it looks like to help put my schedule together. But we could play the U.S. Olympic team in four days and I wouldn’t start preparing for them until after the buzzer sounds tomorrow night.”

The U.S. Olympic Team is not walking through that door.

Anyway, you get that picture. And it’s not an act. The only way to be successful is to keep focus on the task in front of you, whether it’s a game, a possession, a timeout, whatever.

Those of us on the sidelines, however, don’t have to do that so much. Sometimes, I think it’s instructive to back up a little bit and look at what has happened. And how it has happened, and why.

That’s why we’re going to turn to some statistics from CBBAnalytics.com to paint a picture of the Louisville basketball team over the past 10 games.

    Shot Selection

Louisville’s shot chart over the past 10 games doesn’t differ much from its shot chart for the whole season. It’s a picture of modern basketball. You’ll see a ton of shots from three-point range, and a ton of shots at the rim. You’ll see some shots in the lane.

    Louisville last 10 games

Louisville’s shot chart during its 10 game winning streak

And you can count on your hands and feet (20 shots in 10 games) that were mid-range jumpers outside the lane.

Louisville has not been a particularly good shooting team this season (though it has been better during the 10-game winning streak).

But what it has done particularly well is take the shots it wants to take. If it can get good volume from threes or at the rim, and get to the foul line, the offense is working.

“We hunt great,” Kelsey said of his team’s shot selection. “It’s not just about this three or that two, but about great looks.”

This is what a disciplined offense looks like in 2025. A shot chart filled with shots in the lane, and shots outside the three-point line, and not much in between.

By contrast, below is what Louisville’s shot chart looked like last season. The shots came from everywhere. Now, there’s more than one way to run an offense. But, in general, when you see a shot chart that has no shape, it generally belies an offense that has no shape — though occasionally it will be showing you an excellent offense that is difficult to scout, and defend.

    Louisville 2023-24 shot chart

A shot chart from the 2023-24 Louisville basketball season.

    Sit in the Corner

The corner three-pointer is Nirvana in modern college (and pro) basketball. It has a shorter length. Players like to shoot it. And they make it at a higher percentage than any other shot beyond the arc.

So corner threes are “great looks” Louisville will hunt at every opportunity. During its winning streak, Louisville has taken 14% of its shots from the corner beyond the arc. That percentage is in the highest three percent in the nation during that time.

The Cards are shooting 43% on corner threes during the streak. Khani Rooths is 60% on those shots, Reyne Smith is 56%, Terrence Edwards if 46.7%and Chucky Hepburn 41.7%.

If you’re looking for Louisville’s best shooters at the rim, James Scott has made 78.% of his shots from inside 4 ½ feet over the past 10 games, and Hepburn has made 70.6%.

    Sit in Timeout

Louisville has averaged 1.01 points per chance on possessions out of timeouts over the past 10 games, which ranks 21st in the nation. It seems hard to imagine 20 teams better out of timeouts than Louisville but that’s the stat. Over the past five games, Louisville’s 1.17 points per chance out of timeouts ranks third nationally.

(Note: That’s not a percentage of scores right out of timeouts. I don’t have the analytics service that provides that info.)

Regardless of rank, Louisville’s effectiveness out of timeouts has not gone unnoticed.

For the season as a whole, Louisville is averaging 1.04 nationally in points per chance out of timeouts, good for 31st nationally. And 59% of Louisville’s shots coming out of timeouts have been three-point attempts, good for second nationally.

How does this compare to recent years? Louisville ranked No. 153 in this category last season and No. 209 the season before.

    Looking at Lineups

Louisville’s most-used lineup has also been its best statistically. Which is nice. But it’s not always something you can take for granted at any level of basketball.

The lineup of Hepburn, Smith, Hadley, Edwards and Scott has had a plus-minus of plus-99 over the past 10 games. It has logged more than twice as many minutes as any other lineup.

But the interesting thing about Louisville’s team is that, during this 10-game streak, it has four other lineups that are plus-83 or higher. The lineup of Hepburn, Smith, Edwards, Hadley and Traore has been plus-93 — and that lineup has the highest overall rating of any other group. It also has the highest effective field-goal percentage.

The best defensive lineup, by rating, is a group that includes Hepburn, Smith, Edwards, Traore and Scott – a group that also leads Louisville in steal percentage, and blocked shot percentage. Lineups where Louisville uses Noah Waterman and Hadley, or Scott and Rooths, or Scott and Hadley together, fair a bit worse on defense.

No matter how you break it down, of course, Louisville is playing well. And rest assured, Louisville’s staff, which is meticulous about analytics, knows far more than this. But Kelsey downplays the streak.

“We’re just trying to be great at the next thing we do, that’s it,” he said. “I mean, that success that we’ve had in the past is over. Whether it’s at a past program or 10 wins in a row, it doesn’t guarantee we’re going to win tomorrow. If we’re not ready to play against Georgia Tech, we’re going to get our butt kicked.”

As the Louisville Cardinals continue their impressive 10-game win streak, let’s take a closer look at some key stats that have contributed to their success. From shooting percentages to defensive stops, here are 4 key stats that highlight the dominance of the Louisville men’s basketball team during their recent hot streak.

    1. Three-point shooting percentage: One of the standout stats during Louisville’s win streak has been their efficient three-point shooting. The Cardinals have been shooting over 40% from beyond the arc, giving them a significant edge over their opponents. Players like star guard David Johnson and sharpshooter Matt Cross have been lighting it up from deep, stretching the floor and creating scoring opportunities for their teammates.

    2. Turnover margin: Another key stat that has fueled Louisville’s success is their ability to take care of the basketball while forcing turnovers on defense. The Cardinals have been winning the turnover battle in nearly every game during their win streak, leading to extra possessions and easy scoring opportunities. Players like guard Carlik Jones and forward Jae’Lyn Withers have been instrumental in creating turnovers and converting them into points on the other end.

    3. Points in the paint: Louisville has been dominating the paint on both ends of the floor, outscoring their opponents in the key and limiting their opportunities inside. The Cardinals have been utilizing their size and athleticism to score easy buckets in the paint, while also protecting the rim and contesting shots on defense. Players like forward Malik Williams and center Roosevelt Wheeler have been instrumental in controlling the paint and creating mismatches against smaller opponents.

    4. Free throw percentage: In close games, free throw shooting can often be the difference between a win and a loss. Louisville has been excelling at the charity stripe during their win streak, making crucial free throws down the stretch to secure victories. Players like guard Dre Davis and forward Samuell Williamson have been reliable free throw shooters, knocking down key shots when the game is on the line.

As Louisville continues to roll through their schedule, these key stats will be crucial in maintaining their momentum and securing wins against tough competition. With a balanced attack on offense and stingy defense, the Cardinals are proving to be a force to be reckoned with in college basketball.
