  • Gophers women’s basketball miss chance to reclaim spot in AP Top-25. – The Minnesota Daily

Gophers women’s basketball squandered their opportunity to regain a top-25 ranking after falling 69-82 to No. 4 University of Southern California (USC) on Thursday.

Riding the best season start in program history and earning their first AP Top-25 ranking since 2019, the Gophers briefly held the No. 23 spot before falling out of the rankings after last week’s 65-70 loss to the No. 24 Michigan Wolverines.

The Gophers struggled to match and combat the offensive energy of the Trojans early into the game, entering the second quarter with a 10-point deficit. Trojans sophomore guard JuJu Watkins scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half of the game.

“(We) showed some toughness and resiliency, but, you know, unfortunately, it wasn’t enough in the end,” Gophers head coach Dawn Plitzuweit said. “We learned through that experience that we’ve got to probably start a lot better.”

Another offensive hurdle for the Gophers was USC forward Kiki Iriafen. She racked up 23 points and 11 rebounds for the Trojans, going 81.8% in the paint and 2-2 from the 3-point line.

Plitzuweit cited Minnesota’s early turnovers and missed opportunities at the rim as key factors in their early scoring deficit.

“They are loaded with offensive firepower in a lot of different ways,” Plitzuweit said. “We felt different players stepping up and hitting arc shots and that made it really, really tough for us.”

Gophers senior center Sophie Hart said she tried to be the strong offensive powerhouse Minnesota needed to combat USC’s strong post presence.

Hart led the team in scoring and was one of three Gophers to reach double figures, finishing with 18 points and grabbing five offensive rebounds.

The Gophers held their ground defensively, holding the Trojans to a 7-0 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter and forcing two turnovers.

Despite the loss being hard to swallow, Hart said the Gophers’ fight in the fourth quarter gave them a boost of confidence in their playing style.

“I don’t know if two years ago, we would have had that same kind of dog in us to battle back like that,” Hart said. “That speaks a lot about our team.”

The Gophers could not keep their early quarter momentum going, struggling to match Watkins’ offensive domination. Watkins’ performance led to her fourth double-double of the season.

The Gophers remain in California for their upcoming match against No. 1 UCLA on Sunday.

The Gophers women’s basketball team had a tough loss this past weekend as they missed their chance to reclaim a spot in the AP Top-25 rankings. Despite a strong effort, the team fell short in a close game, leaving them just outside the coveted rankings.

It was a disappointing outcome for the Gophers, who have been playing well this season and were hoping to make a statement with a win over a tough opponent. However, they will have to regroup and refocus as they continue to push for a spot among the nation’s top teams.

This setback serves as a reminder that the road to success is never easy, and the Gophers will need to stay determined and hungry as they strive to reach their goals. With hard work and perseverance, there is no doubt that this team has the potential to make a strong push for a spot in the AP Top-25 and beyond. Let’s continue to support our Gophers women’s basketball team as they work towards achieving their goals and making us proud.

  • Minnesota Timberwolves star who was ‘trying to fight for a spot’ in the NBA now ‘fits’ the system

In just three years, the Minnesota Timberwolves star’s life has taken a complete U-turn, in a good way.

The Minnesota Timberwolves carried over their good form from their last matchup against the Phoenix Suns to the Utah Jazz game.

The T-Wolves had no problem putting away the Jazz behind a 36-point onslaught from their star guard Anthony Edwards.

However, the Timberwolves also got some major help from their bench in their massive 138-113 win over the struggling Jazz, especially from fourth-year NBA veteran Luka Garza.

Luka Garza had a season-high scoring outburst

A one-sided win is always good for a team’s morale, especially in the case of the T-Wolves, who derailed in their quest to finish as one of the top-four teams in the conference earlier in the season.

But thanks to some brilliant performances from their starters and bench players, the Timberwolves are seemingly back in the race to clinch a direct playoff berth.

Speaking of their recent blowout win, veteran center Luka Garza had the best game of the season, scoring-wise.

He finished the night with 16 points while also adding 4 rebounds to his name. Garza is slowly becoming a decent backup center for the organization as they are now on a five-game winning streak.

Playing for the Timberwolves changed Luka Garza’s life

For most NBA players, reaching the league is never the end of their journey. If anything, that’s when the competitive nature of the best basketball league in the world seeds out most athletes in a matter of a few years.

In Garza’s case, if the Timberwolves hadn’t given him an opportunity, he may have already been out of the league. The 26-year-old recently reflected on his NBA journey and how he “fits” perfectly into head coach Chris Finch’s system in Minnesota.

“It’s been incredible since the moment I got here. When I got here, I was a guy who was on a training camp roster, trying to fight for a spot in the league and on the team,” Garza said during the postgame interview.

He added: “It just felt like, right away, I fit the system. I fit what Tim and Finchy were trying to do here and I’ve just loved every single second of being a part of this organization.”

Garza also praised how coach Finch’s mindset on both ends of the floor allows him to fit well into the system.

As a fourth-year NBA veteran, Garza has seemingly found his home. Prior to joining the Timberwolves, he spent a single season with the Detroit Pistons, featuring in just 32 games for the franchise.

Minnesota Timberwolves star, Anthony Edwards, who was once seen as a player “trying to fight for a spot” in the NBA, has now found his stride and is seamlessly fitting into the team’s system.

Edwards, the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, had a rocky start to his rookie season as he adjusted to the speed and physicality of the NBA. However, as the season progressed, Edwards began to showcase his immense talent and potential, earning him the NBA Rookie of the Year award.

Now in his second season, Edwards has become a key player for the Timberwolves, averaging over 20 points per game and showcasing his scoring ability, athleticism, and defensive prowess. He has formed a dynamic duo with All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns and has been instrumental in the team’s success this season.

With his improved play and growing confidence, Edwards is no longer just “fighting for a spot” in the NBA, but rather thriving and excelling in the Timberwolves’ system. As he continues to develop and grow, the sky is the limit for this young star.

  • Bronny struggles in extended Lakers run; ‘put him in a tough spot,’ says Redick

PHILADELPHIA — Lakers coach JJ Redick second-guessed his decision to insert rookie Bronny James into his rotation in Los Angeles’ 118-104 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday.

“Maybe put him in a tough spot,” Redick said after James went 0-for-5 with three turnovers in 15 minutes. “Flying up yesterday, nationally televised game in Philly and all that stuff. He didn’t play well, but he’s been playing great in the stay-ready games, and he’s been playing great in the G [League].”

James was on assignment with the South Bay Lakers, L.A.’s G League affiliate, when the Lakers recalled him Monday to join them in the middle of their five-game road trip.

The Lakers’ No. 55 pick in the second round in June, the eldest son of star LeBron James, had not played meaningful minutes for L.A. since opening night when the James family became the first father-son duo in NBA history to play in a game together.

With backup Gabe Vincent (left knee) sidelined the past two games, Redick gave Bronny a shot in the first quarter against Philadelphia with L.A. up 17-9.

“Just felt like on a back-to-back, just him giving us energy, I think, was the goal,” Redick said. “I have confidence in him, but obviously didn’t provide that at a high level.”

The 6-foot-2 guard struggled immediately, with the Sixers’ Tyrese Maxey (43 points) attacking him defensively to score and then turning it over on a bad pass to Anthony Davis on offense, leading to a transition dunk for Guerschon Yabusele.

“He’s a fast guard,” Bronny said of Maxey. “Amazing touch. Can shoot it. I was trying to stand my ground. Just trying to play as hard as I can and bring as much energy as I can. That’s all.”

He added that the call-up to the Lakers, a few days after scoring a season-high 31 points in the G League, caught him off guard.

“It just came out of nowhere, so I was always trying to stay ready to play and always keeping my mind right,” he said.

Despite the rough night, Bronny still cited growth since opening night when he closed out the second quarter against the Minnesota Timberwolves with his dad.

“I feel like I’m a whole lot more prepared now,” he said. “Again, just coming out and staying ready after the G League stint and the season being down the road a little bit more, just staying ready. And coming in, playing smart.”

LeBron said his son’s growth will continue with more opportunities.

“Obviously, it’s his first extensive minutes with us,” LeBron said. “We had that first game where it was just a moment — and that was a great moment. But tonight was his first opportunity to be with the big guys, be with the big club, and he’s going to continue to use that and get better and better.”

Bronny James, the son of NBA legend LeBron James, has been facing challenges during his extended run with the Los Angeles Lakers. Veteran guard JJ Redick recently commented on Bronny’s struggles, saying that the young player has been put in a tough spot due to the high expectations and scrutiny that come with being part of a famous basketball family.

Bronny, who is currently a member of the Lakers’ G League affiliate team, has been working hard to make a name for himself in the basketball world. However, with the added pressure of being LeBron James’ son, the 17-year-old has been facing criticism and comparisons to his father.

Redick, who has been following Bronny’s journey closely, expressed empathy for the young player and acknowledged the challenges he faces. “It’s not easy being in Bronny’s shoes. The spotlight is always on him, and people are quick to judge his every move. He’s a talented player with a bright future, but he’s still learning and growing,” Redick said.

Despite the difficulties, Bronny remains determined to prove himself and carve out his own path in the basketball world. With the support of his family, teammates, and fans, he continues to work hard and improve his game.

As Bronny navigates the ups and downs of his basketball career, it is clear that he has the potential to make a name for himself beyond just being LeBron James’ son. With time and experience, he will undoubtedly overcome these challenges and emerge as a successful player in his own right.

  • I’m Not Raising My Hand To Be In That Spot

Cody Rhodes has mixed feelings regarding standing across the ring from John Cena in his retirement year.

Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes recently sat down with TheOneMona. When asked about the possibility of facing John Cena this year before he retires from in-ring competition, Rhodes explained why he’s hesitant to be in that position.

“One thing that’s been on my mind, I think when he announced he was retiring, is a lot of guys jumped to the line of, I want to wrestle John,” Cody Rhodes said. “A lot of guys jumped to the, ‘I want to do something with John.’ I’m probably the one who didn’t hold his hand up and that’s simply because John is everything to me and there’s been so many guys I’m a product of who I took a little something from.

“The most that I’ve taken from anybody ever would be from John, and that was from driving those few years of them seeing how he did his interactions with fans, how he would do main events, to see how he did the quarterback, the leader all those things. So when I hear this is it, It’s still not fully for me.

Cody Rhodes says he dreads the thought of having to beat John Cena this year

“I don’t love this is it and I know it is. I know he means it when he says it. But I want to watch like a fan. I almost dread the idea of what that would look like. Because when you’re up against John now, you’re tasked to beat John Cena in his final run and that’s why I’m not raising my hand to be in that spot.” [H/T: Fightful]

I’m Not Raising My Hand To Be In That Spot

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you feel pressured to speak up or volunteer for something you’re not comfortable with? Maybe it’s in a meeting at work, a social gathering, or even just a simple classroom setting. Whatever the case may be, it’s important to remember that you have the right to say no and not feel obligated to put yourself in a spot that makes you uneasy.

I’ve been in situations like this before, where I felt like I had to raise my hand or volunteer for something just to avoid any awkwardness or confrontation. But as I’ve grown older, I’ve learned that it’s okay to stand up for myself and politely decline if I’m not comfortable with a certain task or responsibility.

So the next time you find yourself in a spot where you feel pressured to raise your hand, remember that it’s perfectly okay to say no. Your well-being and comfort should always come first, and you should never feel obligated to put yourself in a situation that doesn’t sit right with you. Trust your instincts and remember that it’s okay to prioritize your own happiness and peace of mind.
