  • Nebraska, Matt Rhule plan to scratch Huskers’ spring game amid poaching concerns

LINCOLN, Neb. — Nebraska coach Matt Rhule plans to cancel the Huskers’ spring game in part because of concerns that other programs would use the event to poach his roster.

“The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore,” Rhule said Saturday. “It’s just absolute free, open, common market. And so I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world. I don’t want these (other coaches) all being able to watch our guys and say, ‘Wow, he looks like a pretty good player. Let’s go get him.’”

Thirty-one players from the Nebraska roster left to enter the transfer portal after the 2024 season, including 12 who have landed at other Power 4 programs. The Huskers have added 15 players from the portal, all of whom are set to participate in spring practice. Thirteen of the 20 incoming freshmen who signed in December are also on campus in Lincoln for the spring.

“To go out and bring in a bunch of new players and then showcase them for all the other schools to watch,” Rhule said, “that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.”

The Big Ten Network televised the Nebraska spring game last year. The event attracted a crowd at Memorial Stadium of 60,452. Nebraska has annually drawn one of the largest crowds in college football to its spring game.

Rhule, the third-year Nebraska coach, said he “dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities” after the spring last season. Two scholarship players — reserve defenders Ru’Quan Buckley and Chief Borders — left Nebraska after the spring to enter the portal in April and early May. Buckley landed at Michigan State and Borders at Pitt.

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen said on Wednesday that the school would likely still stage something for fans on April 26 at the end of spring practice. It could feature other fall sports teams at the school in something of a preview event, Dannen said.

A shrinking roster as a result of the 105-player limit connected to the NCAA v. House settlement also factors into the likely cancellation. In addition, injury concerns exist. Five Nebraska offensive linemen underwent surgeries after the 2024 season. A year ago, two players suffered knee injuries in the spring game that impacted their readiness to play in the fall.

The elimination of spring games appears on track to become a trend amid the high stakes of revenue sharing and soaring NIL earnings in the portal era. UCF also won’t hold a traditional spring game this year, citing reasons similar to the concerns aired Saturday by Rhule.

Scott Frost, formerly of Nebraska, coaches the Knights.

“It’s like the Home Shopping Network of the spring,” UCF AD Terry Mahajir told the Orlando Sentinel of televised spring games.

Nebraska, Matt Rhule plan to scratch Huskers’ spring game amid poaching concerns

In a shocking turn of events, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule has announced that the Huskers’ spring game will be scratched due to concerns of poaching by other programs. Rhule, who took over the Nebraska program just a few months ago, has been vocal about his commitment to rebuilding the team and bringing them back to national prominence.

However, with rumors swirling about other programs trying to poach Nebraska’s top recruits, Rhule has made the difficult decision to cancel the spring game in order to protect his players from any potential tampering. This move has sparked controversy among fans and analysts, with some praising Rhule for putting his players’ best interests first, while others criticize him for missing out on a valuable opportunity to showcase the team’s talent.

Despite the cancellation of the spring game, Rhule remains confident in his team’s ability to compete at a high level next season. He has vowed to continue working tirelessly to build a strong program and lead the Huskers to success in the upcoming season.

As the college football world waits to see how this situation unfolds, one thing is clear: Nebraska and Matt Rhule are not backing down in their quest to bring the Huskers back to glory. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Nebraska coach Matt Rhule ‘highly doubts’ team will have spring game because of the transfer portal

Nebraska’s spring game tradition could be going away. And according to coach Matt Rhule, it’s because of the transfer portal.

Rhule said Saturday that he doubted that Nebraska would have a spring scrimmage on April 26 and was blunt in explaining why he didn’t want to showcase his players.

“I don’t know that yet but I’ll be honest with you, I highly doubt it,” Rhule said when asked if Nebraska would have a spring scrimmage on that date. “And I think it’s really fundamentally, I hate to say it like this, it’s really because last year we were one of the more televised spring games and I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that. So to go out and bring in a bunch of new players and showcase them for all the other schools to watch, that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore. It’s just absolute free open common market and so I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world. I don’t want these guys all able to watch our guys and say, ‘Wow he looks like a pretty good player, let’s go get him.’”

Nebraska’s spring game has been a decades-long tradition and is one of the biggest spring games in college football. Huskers fans routinely pack Memorial Stadium for the game and it produced one of the best spring game moments in recent memory when a then-7-year-old Jack Hoffman scored a touchdown during the game.

Nebraska athletic director Troy Dannen said earlier in the week that April 26 would likely feature a “celebration” of the school’s athletes instead of a traditional game.

You can understand why Nebraska is moving away from a spring game in the current era of college sports. Rhule is far from the only college coach who doesn’t want other coaching staffs to see his players right before the spring transfer portal opens.

Don’t be surprised if Nebraska’s move becomes a trend. While coaches are pushing to change transfer window dates, more teams could follow Nebraska and others and change the way they end spring practices as long as there’s a spring transfer window.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers may not have a spring game this year, according to head coach Matt Rhule. In a recent interview, Rhule expressed doubt that the team would be able to hold their annual spring game due to the increasing prevalence of the transfer portal in college football.

The transfer portal allows players to explore their options and potentially transfer to a different school without having to sit out a year. This has led to a significant amount of roster turnover for many teams, making it difficult to field a full team for a spring game.

Rhule acknowledged the challenges that the transfer portal presents for college football programs, and indicated that the team may have to adjust their plans for the spring accordingly. While it’s disappointing for fans to potentially miss out on the opportunity to see their team in action during the spring game, Rhule emphasized that the team’s focus is on preparing for the upcoming season and making sure they have a competitive roster.

It remains to be seen whether the Cornhuskers will ultimately be able to hold a spring game this year, but fans can rest assured that the team is working hard to be ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

  • Nebraska likely to cancel spring game over transfer concerns

LINCOLN, Neb. — The Nebraska spring game, one of the best attended in college football and a major revenue producer, likely won’t be held going forward because of coach Matt Rhule’s concern about other teams poaching his players.

“The word ‘tampering’ doesn’t exist anymore,” Rhule said Saturday at his midwinter news conference. “It’s just an absolute free open common market. I don’t necessarily want to open up to the outside world and have people watch our guys and say, ‘He looks like a pretty good player. Let’s go get him.’”

The spring game has a long tradition at Nebraska. Last year, the event drew 60,452 to Memorial Stadium, fourth highest in the nation behind spring games at Ohio State, Alabama and Penn State. The Cornhuskers’ game also was televised on the Big Ten Network.

“I dealt with a lot of people offering our players a lot of opportunities after that,” Rhule said. “So you go out and bring in a bunch of new players and showcase them for all the other schools to watch? Doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.”

Six Nebraska players entered the transfer portal the week after last year’s spring game.

The spring portal period ends April 25, the day before Nebraska’s spring practice wraps up. However, players can switch schools without entering the portal, as was the case with Wisconsin safety Xavier Lucas‘ recent move to Miami.

Rhule said exposing his players to other schools is more of a concern to him than risking injuries in a spring game. Wide receiver Demitrius Bell and cornerback Blye Hill were hurt in last year’s spring game and missed the season. Rhule said live tackling will continue in scrimmages during spring practice.

“Guys are being compensated now, and you’re putting money behind some people, a whole other set of parameters,” Rhule said. “Yet, at the same time, you have to get good. Honestly, to me, it’s about protecting the roster and protecting through that portal period.”

Asked if there would be a spring game with a scrimmage format to wrap up spring practice, Rhule said, “I don’t know that yet, but I’ll be honest with you, I highly doubt it.”

He said he does want to “show off” his players to the fans in some fashion. Athletic director Troy Dannen said on his radio show last week that a to-be-determined event would be held on April 26, possibly one that involves football and other fall sports.

Nebraska likely to cancel spring game over transfer concerns

Amidst a wave of transfers in college football, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are reportedly considering canceling their upcoming spring game due to concerns about potential player departures. With several key players already entering the transfer portal, including starting quarterback Adrian Martinez, the coaching staff is worried about further disruptions to the team’s roster.

Head coach Scott Frost expressed his concerns in a recent press conference, stating, “We want to ensure that we have a cohesive and committed team heading into the upcoming season. With so many players exploring their options, we feel it may be best to forego the spring game in order to focus on team chemistry and unity.”

While the decision has not been finalized, sources within the program suggest that the cancellation is highly likely. Fans and players alike are disappointed by the potential loss of the spring game, which serves as a preview of the upcoming season and a chance for fans to see the team in action.

As the situation continues to unfold, Nebraska fans are left wondering what the future holds for their beloved team. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Early spring? More winter? Here’s what Sun Prairie’s Jimmy the Groundhog predicted

SUN PRAIRIE − Jimmy the Groundhog is on a hot streak, at least in terms of his recent weather prognostications.

For the fifth time in seven years, Jimmy did not see his shadow on Groundhog Day morning, meaning he predicted an early spring Sunday at the 77th annual Sun Prairie Groundhog Prognostication in downtown Sun Prairie. Mayor Paul Esser relayed Jimmy’s prediction to the hundreds of onlookers gathered at sunrise in the Cannery Square.

Hundreds of onlookers gather at sunrise to hear Jimmy the Groundhog’s weather prediction on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2025, in Cannery Square in downtown Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, for the 77th annual Sun Prairie Groundhog Day Prognostication event.

The prognostication event kicked off more Groundhog Day fun across the city, including the Hibernation Hustle 5K & Kids Dash in downtown, a Pancake Toss Breakfast with Jimmy the Groundhog at the Angell Park Pavilion, and a sled dog demo at Wetmore Park. The big day capped the city’s Parks, Recreation & Forestry Department’s annual five-day Frozen Fest, which featured a puzzle contest, the Groundhog Open Putt Putt Bar Crawl and a candlelit hike and bonfire at the Patrick Marsh Wildlife Area, among other activities.

While temperatures have been rising in recent days, a return to wintry weather awaits most of Wisconsin this week. According to the National Weather Service, high temperatures for Monday and Tuesday range from the low 20s further north to low 30s in the southern parts of the state, with a chance of snow or a wintry mix in store for much of Wisconsin on Wednesday and Thursday.

More: What have Jimmy the Groundhog’s predictions been in recent years?

As we eagerly await the arrival of spring, many are wondering if the recent snowfall means more winter is on the way or if warmer weather is just around the corner. In Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, residents turn to a furry meteorologist named Jimmy the Groundhog for answers.

On February 2nd, Jimmy emerged from his burrow and did not see his shadow, indicating an early spring is on the way. This prediction is a stark contrast to Punxsutawney Phil’s forecast of six more weeks of winter.

While some may be skeptical of a groundhog’s weather forecasting abilities, Jimmy has been surprisingly accurate in the past. Residents of Sun Prairie are hopeful that Jimmy’s prediction will hold true and that warmer weather will soon be on its way.

Regardless of what the weather may bring, one thing is for certain – spring is just around the corner and we can all look forward to longer days, blooming flowers, and outdoor adventures. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Jimmy the Groundhog is right and that an early spring is on the horizon.

  • Woodstock Willie didn’t see his shadow, predicts early spring

    CBS News Chicago

    Live

CHICAGO (CBS) — Woodstock Willie has once again predicted an early spring Sunday morning during the 2025 Groundhog Day celebration in northwest suburban Woodstock.

A large crowd gathered to see if they would need to hold onto their coats for a few more weeks or start getting their spring clothes.

The annual event took place at the site of the iconic movie Groundhog Day, which starred Bill Murray.

Last year, Willie also predicted an early spring.

Willie’s prediction is opposite Punxsutawney Phil, who predicted six more weeks of winter after seeing his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob.

Woodstock Willie, the beloved groundhog from Woodstock, Illinois, did not see his shadow this morning on Groundhog Day, February 2nd. This means that according to folklore, we can expect an early spring this year.

The tradition of Groundhog Day dates back to ancient European weather lore, where it was believed that if a groundhog emerged from its burrow and saw its shadow, there would be six more weeks of winter. If it did not see its shadow, an early spring was predicted.

Woodstock Willie, who has been making weather predictions for over 30 years, delighted the crowd gathered to see him this morning when he did not see his shadow. This news has brought joy to many who are tired of the cold winter weather and are ready for warmer days ahead.

So, let’s celebrate this good news and start looking forward to an early spring! Thank you, Woodstock Willie, for bringing us this hopeful forecast. #WoodstockWillie #EarlySpring #GroundhogDay

Last year, Willie also predicted an early spring.

The city of Woodstock is also hosting a series of Groundhog Day events for the family, including a showing of the 1993 movie that made it famous.

Meanwhile, Punxatawney Phil’s prognostication was six more weeks of winter.

Legend has it, if Phil sees his shadow, we will have six more weeks of winter. But if he doesn’t, spring may be sooner than we think.

  • Did Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow or is an early spring on the way?

PUNXSUTAWNEY, Pa. – Crowds gathered in Pennsylvania on Sunday, waiting for Punxsutawney Phil to awake and hint at more winter or an early spring.

The sun rose above Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, at 7:24 a.m. EST Sunday, kicking off the annual tradition of looking to a woodchuck for signs of spring.

As Phil emerged from his winter slumber, the woodchuck stood up on a stump and saw his shadow. As the legend goes, Phil’s prognostication indicates Americans are in for six more weeks of winter.

Sunday marked the 139th anniversary of the groundhog prognosticator’s tradition, which has been happening since the 1880s.

The tradition of celebrating Groundhog Day started as a Christian holiday. Pennsylvania Germans began celebrating it in the late 1880s by eating groundhogs, hunting and having picnics.

While the woodchuck’s prediction is a celebrated tradition, Phil does not usually get the forecast right, with only a 39% accuracy rate. Over the past decade, only three out of 10 predictions have been correct.

It’s that time of year again – Groundhog Day! The famous Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his burrow this morning to predict whether we will have six more weeks of winter or if an early spring is on the way.

So, did Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow? According to the groundhog’s handlers, he did not see his shadow, which means we can expect an early spring this year. This prediction is sure to bring a sigh of relief to those who are tired of the cold and snowy weather.

However, it’s important to remember that Punxsutawney Phil’s accuracy rate is not perfect, and his prediction is all in good fun. Regardless of what the groundhog says, it’s always a good idea to be prepared for any kind of weather that may come our way.

Whether you’re a believer in Punxsutawney Phil’s weather forecasting abilities or not, one thing is for sure – spring is just around the corner, and we can look forward to warmer days ahead.

  • With spring approaching, what does the Farmers’ Almanac predict for Columbus?

Spring is almost here, bringing thoughts of sunny days, warm breezes and blooming flowers (and no snow). It also brings thoughts of unceasing rain, soggy ground and chilly temperatures.

Is Ohio in for a pleasant, spring or summer? Or is a dour, rainy spring more likely?

The Farmers’ Almanac—which has been predicting the weather since 1818—has the answer to those questions. Here is what it predicts for spring.

Farmers’ Almanac spring prediction for Columbus

Ohio and the Midwest region will have a “cool, showery” spring, according to the almanac.

It will not start right away. Winter weather will linger past the vernal equinox on March 20.

Once spring does set in, plenty of showers and thunderstorms are expected. Ohio is also expected to have below-normal temperatures even through June, according to the almanac.

What does the National Weather Service predict for spring?

The National Weather Service’s three-month outlook predicts Ohio will likely experience above-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation February through April.

What will the weather be like for Easter?

The Farmers’ Almanac predicts a fair, unsettled Easter for Ohio. Unsettled weather occurs when atmospheric conditions are conducive to precipitation, according to NOAA.

    What is La Nina?

La Niña is a recurring climate pattern that occurs when trade winds that push warm water west from South America toward Asia are stronger than usual. Colder water rises to the surface to replenish the warm water pushed off to Asia, which in turn affects weather patterns in the U.S., The Dispatch previously reported.

A cooler Pacific Ocean causes the Pacific jet stream, a fast-moving current of air that circles the globe, to move north, leading to colder and wetter conditions in northern states like Ohio and warmer and drier conditions in the southern U.S., according to the National Weather Service.

The U.S. is currently experiencing La Niña, and there is a 59% chance of it persisting February through April, according to NOAA.

This means that residents can anticipate a wetter spring season, with plenty of rain showers to help nourish the blooming flowers and trees. While the temperatures are projected to be on the mild side, there may still be some fluctuations in weather patterns, so it’s always a good idea to be prepared for anything.

Whether you’re planning outdoor activities, gardening, or just looking forward to enjoying the warmer weather, it’s important to stay informed on the latest weather updates and forecasts.
