  • ‘Squid Game 2’ Villain Unpacks the Front Man Ahead of Season 3

‘Squid Game 2’ Villain Unpacks the Front Man Ahead of Season 3

[This story contains major spoilers through the season two finale of Squid Game.]

Lee Byung-hun spent the original Squid Game almost entirely masked as the mysterious Front Man. For season two, he drops that guise by and large, but picks up another mask — and identity — entirely.

Squid Game 2 sees the South Korean star significantly stepping up his screen time from season one, as the main antagonist plaguing heroic Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae). The Front Man wages a philosophical war with Gi-hun by helping him in his literal war against the Games, posing as a fellow participant named Young-il. As “Young-il,” the Front Man helps Gi-hun rally several others to work together, all while secretly sabotaging those very same efforts.

It’s a constant guessing game of the character’s true motives right up until the very last scene of the season, in which it becomes very clear that the Front Man is, at the end of the day, still gonna Front Man. The seventh and final Squid Game 2 outing ends with the Front Man shooting and killing Jung-bae, Gi-hun’s oldest friend, signifying a huge win for the bad guys heading into the third and final season.

In the chat below, The Hollywood Reporter speaks with Lee through a translator about bringing the Front Man to life, whether he believes there’s any redemption for the character left at all and what’s to come.

    ***

You have a lot to do here in season two. What was you first reaction to finding out about the expanded role?

When I first received the script, I felt like, “Okay, I’m going to be busy.” I’m playing three characters: the Front Man, In-ho [his real name] and Young-il, who he’s acting as when he’s in the games. Keeping all those personalities straight is one of those really exciting opportunities as an actor. I was really looking forward to taking it on.

Were you surprised by what you learned about the Front Man this season?

Yes; even compared to when I first read the script, I learned so much about him as I was shooting it. I’m pretending to be Young-il, on a team with Gi-hun, but observing Gi-hun, and almost seeing a past version of himself through Gi-hun. By the end of the season, In-ho does think he’s right; that his world view is correct. However, he has a very small inkling of hope that still exists for humanity, for the world. That was the biggest shift in my understanding of my own character between reading the scripts and shooting. While we were doing it, I kept wondering, maybe there’s a small shift in his perspective…

Lee Byung-hun as the Front Man in season two.

    Netflix

It was a big question for me, watching you across the season and wondering where your true loyalties lie. Were there moments you were wondering the same thing?

Yeah, I did feel that. I did feel these moments where he’s faltering. He really wants to break down Gi-hun’s worldview, but as In-ho’s working with him and working with the other characters, he feels excited, he feels joy, he feels angry all alongside them. I do think there are moments where he’s actually enjoying the Games. I do think he forms some attachments to the other participants, but ultimately you see him kill Jung-bae very relentlessly. I think that’s because he has this ultimate goal of making Gi-hun realize his belief in the world is misplaced.

Why do you think he entered the game?

When In-ho played the game previously, he had already lost all of his hope. His life was very bare bones. When he entered the game previously, it was even more desperate. Seeing the pit of humanity… I think that even though In-ho’s body is alive, his soul died a long time ago. Because of that, life and death don’t have a lot of meaning for him.

The biggest reason for him entering the games again is so he can break Gi-hun’s spirit. At first when Gi-hun returned, he was just going to observe him and see what he does. But then he realizes Gi-hun’s telling the other participants the rules of the game. He’s raising them up, collecting them and giving them power. That’s when he realizes he needs to step up as well.

Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) with Park Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan) in season two.

    Netflix

What did you make of the scene where Jung-bae watches In-ho break a fellow player’s neck? Something seriously shifts in the dynamic here.

When I first received the script, I knew that scene was extremely important and pivotal for my character. Of course, I felt a very complicated set of emotions playing these three characters — the Front Man, In-ho, Young-il — you see moments where all three of these aspects come together. I wanted to express that with the gaze, the gleam in his eye. When Jung-bae sees me commit this murder, he begins to wonder, “Is he really on our team? Is he the guy I’ve been playing with all along?” I think he starts to feel a very strange set of emotions as well. It makes the whole scene so complex.

Heading into season three, do you think there’s a chance for some redemption for the Front Man?

I’m not just saying this because I don’t want to spoil season three. I really mean it: In-ho’s interiority is really hard to know, even as season three progresses. What I’ve taken away in embodying and acting as him in season three, that possibility for change within him always exists.

BTS’ Kim Taehyung in Squid Game 3? Lee Jung Jae, Wi Ha Joon respond | Web Series

Following bombastic rumours of Leonardo DiCaprio joining the Squid Game Season 3 cast, BTS’ V, aka Kim Taehyung’s name has also been roped into fan-treasured speculations.

Lee Jung Jae and Wi Ha Joon responded to rumours of BTS V’s involvement in Squid Game Season 3 in a recent BuzzFeed interview. (X)

Gone are the days when Squid Game was just K-drama enthusiasts’ little secret starring new-found standout actors taking the world by storm. The first season’s full-blown-out success has paved the way for all things big in the following sequels of the hit Netflix sensation.

Also read | How Squid Game 2 reunited an ex-K-drama couple that dated IRL; one of them again shares a controversy-riddled past

Squid Game Season 2 alone introduced fans to a grand roster of new cast member introductions. The series has undoubtedly dragged its reputation for infamous reasons attached to the many male actor castings shrouded in years-old controversies and scandals. However, there’s no denying that the December 26 premiere welcoming the likes of Yim Siwan, Park Sung Hoon, Park Gyu Young, Kang Ha Neul and Lee Jin Wook, among others, has boosted the show’s skyrocketing visibility. Love it or hate it, there’s no turning back from the fact that Season 2 has equally shaped up to be one of the biggest shows in Netflix’s history, thanks to its record-breaking opening with the show ranking No 1 in 92 of the 93 countries the streamer lists on its weekly rankings (December 23-29).

BTS’ V / Kim Taehyung Squid Game rumours

Years of speculation have led BTS ARMYs to this point. Season 2 already brought on a K-pop heavy cast roster, including former IZ*ONE member Jo Yuri, ex-BIGBANG singer T.O.P., aka Choi Seung Hyung, and ZE:A’s Siwan. Now that Netflix has seemingly slipped out the Season 3 premiere date for June 2025, fans couldn’t help but jog their memories for long-lost clues tying the show’s strings back to BTS’ V. Taehyung suspiciously donned the Squid Game guard cosplay during the K-pop act’s PERMISSION TO DANCE ON STAGE concerts in Los Angeles. Moreover, he and the show’s leading star, Lee Jung Jae previously snapped a selfie, still visible on the latter’s Instagram profile, hinting at their potential multiple hangout sessions.

On top of that, V is believed to share a close bond with Siwan as well. The Squid Game Season 2 newcomer previously mentioned the BTS star in an interview, addressing that Taehyung was one of the last additions to his Instagram following list at the time.

All these receipts that served as blasts from the past have come full circle now that Lee Jung Jae and his co-star Wi Ha Joon were directly asked about the rumours of V possibly joining the cast in the threequel. BuzzFeed UK interviewed the duo this week. Doing the BTS ARMY a favour, the outlet came right out and popped the question.

The tongue-tied Squid Game duo’s faces lit up as soon as they heard V’s name being dragged into the conversation. Lee quickly abrupted the train of thought, saying, “I can’t say anything about that,” whereas a beaming Wi Ha Joon maintained his “No comment” stance.

Hopeful fans haven’t yet accepted this response as an outright rejection of their “Kim Taehyung actor” comeback agenda.

Fans of the hit Netflix series Squid Game have been buzzing with excitement over rumors that BTS member Kim Taehyung may be joining the cast for the highly anticipated third season. The news has sparked a frenzy on social media, with fans speculating about what role Taehyung could potentially play in the deadly game.

In a recent interview, Squid Game stars Lee Jung Jae and Wi Ha Joon were asked about the possibility of Taehyung joining the cast for season 3. Both actors expressed their excitement at the prospect of working with the K-pop idol, praising his talent and charisma.

Lee Jung Jae, who plays the enigmatic Front Man in the series, said, “I think Kim Taehyung would bring a fresh energy to the show. His presence would definitely add an interesting dynamic to the game.”

Wi Ha Joon, who portrays the ruthless soldier Jang Deok Su, added, “I’ve seen Taehyung’s performances on stage, and he is a truly captivating performer. I think he would make a great addition to the Squid Game universe.”

While there has been no official confirmation of Taehyung’s involvement in Squid Game 3, fans are hopeful that the rumors will turn out to be true. With his acting skills and charm, Taehyung would undoubtedly make a splash in the world of the deadly game.

  • Netflix Denies American A-List Cameo In ‘Squid Game’ Season 3

Netflix Denies American A-List Cameo In ‘Squid Game’ Season 3

For a brief moment, there was a report from Korea’s OSEN claiming inside knowledge that a specific A-list star would be heading to Squid Game season 3 for a cameo role.

That star was none other than Leonardo DiCaprio, about as A-list as you can get. However, Netflix came out to shut this down almost as soon as it started to spread, calling it “entirely unfounded.”

This idea was not quite as random as it seemed, as back in 2021, lead actor Lee Jung-jae met DiCaprio at a gala, and then when asked during a different event later, said that DiCaprio was the actor he’d want to see in season 2 of the show. DiCaprio is a big name, but Squid Game is the biggest show on planet earth, so it’s not that crazy. DiCaprio also has an existing relationship with Netflix, having starred in its comedy Don’t Look Up in 2021.

Netflix could be smokescreening here, but it seems like a pretty definitive no. When this was first flying around, the idea was that DiCaprio would appear as one of the infamous VIPs in the series, the Western, mask-wearing patrons that wager on the Squid Games, a group that Lee Jung-jae’s 456 is attempt to reach and kill in season 3. It would have actually been pretty funny if DiCaprio was one, but hidden behind a mask so it wasn’t a full cameo, and perhaps a bit less distracting if say…Leonardo DiCaprio’s face was suddenly on the screen.

Back in season 1, the appearance of the VIPs was controversial due to just how awful their appearance was compared to the rest of the show with weird dialogue and line readings. It was so bad that later some of the actors had to come out and explain what exactly happened here. I wrote this up back in 2021, when VIP actor John D. Michaels explained:

“It’s different for every show, but non-Korean performers often act with dialogue that is translated by a non-native – sometimes even by Google Translate – so it can sound unnatural,” he said.

The other problem was the set-up for most of the VIP’s lines:

“We were all wearing very heavy plaster masks, and sitting on couches that were at least 20-30 feet away from the closest VIP. We all had to yell our lines vaguely into the air, which added to the weird tonality of the delivery.”

Given how much pushback there was about the season 1 VIPs, it seems like Squid Game is much more likely to handle them better this time around, as we know they’re obviously going to make another appearance by the time things are said and done, with season 3 being the conclusion of the story. And I would expect a lot of them to end up dead, DiCaprio not withstanding.

Rumors have been swirling around the internet that a major American A-list celebrity would be making a cameo in the highly anticipated third season of the hit Netflix series ‘Squid Game.’ However, Netflix has officially denied these claims, putting an end to the speculation.

Fans of the show had been buzzing with excitement at the possibility of seeing a big name star join the cast of ‘Squid Game,’ but it seems that those hopes have been dashed. Netflix released a statement saying, “Contrary to recent reports, there are no plans for an American A-list celebrity to make a cameo in ‘Squid Game’ season 3. We are thrilled with the talented cast we have assembled for the upcoming season and can’t wait for audiences to see what we have in store.”

While it may be disappointing news for some fans, the denial from Netflix only adds to the mystery and intrigue surrounding the upcoming season of ‘Squid Game.’ With its record-breaking success and worldwide popularity, there’s no doubt that fans will be eagerly awaiting any news and updates on the show.

  • The Exact ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Release Date May Have Been Leaked By Netflix

The Exact ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Release Date May Have Been Leaked By Netflix

This article was published on 1/2 and republished on 1/3.

While Netflix has established that season 3 of Squid Game is coming in 2025 in multiple promos for its content in the coming year, they may have accidentally let the exact date slip.

Netflix Korea briefly had a video go live that didn’t just have the 2025 release date, but a specific date, June 27, 2025. That would be just six months from now, essentially record time in releasing a new season of a huge show, especially when it took three years to get from season 1 to season 2.

However, if you’ve watched season 2 and heard anything that creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has said about this, you’ll know that this is more or less Part 2 of Season 2, rather than a season 3 in a more traditional sense. Here’s what happened:

“No other particular reason than that I originally envisioned it as a single series, so both seasons two and three as a single series when I was writing it. But then, as I wrote the story along, it became to be too many episodes and too long of a story because you see Gi-hun’s journey where he returns to the game, but also he goes through a revolt, and that is actually the climax of that storyline, where he tries to create an uprising, but then that all goes to failure.”

“And I also saw that aspect of it as yet another game as well, and so I thought that we would divide it into two seasons to have that – Gi-hun’s revolt going into a failure, him ending up losing his best friend, that itself being yet another important climatic event in the first half of the season, so into season two.”

Production on both seasons happened all at once, so part of this three year gap was Hwang making a giant 14 episode arc that was split into two seasons. While Netflix has been doing a “split a new season of a popular series in half” release schedule a lot of the time as of late, that’s usually 4 and 4 or 5 and 5 and a month or so apart. Here, six months apart, with seven hour long episodes each? Sure, I guess I’ll give them the “season 3” badge in this case.

Why so soon? Well, again, I think Netflix knows that people clearly want the cliffhangers of season 2 resolved sooner rather than later, but also the way they’re spacing out content means they probably want the second half of 2025 devoted to its other two massive shows, the final season of Stranger Things, season 5, and season 2 of Wednesday, its two most-watched English series of all time, with Squid Game being its most-watched overall. It is going to be an absolutely huge year for Netflix due to how all this is lining up.

Update (1/3): To lend further credence to this idea that Squid Game season 3 will be released on June 27, we can go to the potential, estimated release dates of Stranger Things season 5 and Wednesday season 2, which I’ve already calculated before this using past filming data extrapolated forward.

    • For instance, filming wrapped for Stranger Things season 5 in December 2024. Using past timing for season 4, that should be eight months of post-production, putting the release in August 2025, though with a bigger season, perhaps closer to October 2025, a good distance from Squid Game season 3.
    • For Wednesday season 2, there are two main options. Using the same calculation with filming wrapped, the release window is probably somewhere in July 2025, which would be right after Squid Game season 3 airs. However, if Netflix wanted to space the show out more and release it closer to when the first season came out, November 23, 2022, that may be the more likely plan, even if it fully extends the gap between seasons to three years. Fans have waited this long, so what’s a bit more?

My final guess is Squid Game in June, Stranger Things in September/October and Wednesday in November/December of 2025. We’ll see if I’m right, but I do think I’m probably going to end up being pretty close. Regardless, it’s about to be a truly enormous year for Netflix.

Heightened tension, brand new games and return of the VIPs: What can we expect from Squid Game series 3 in 2025

Spoiler Alert: This article contains major spoilers for Squid Game series 2.

Squid Game series 3 will release in 2025

After a gruelling three-year wait for Squid Game series 2, fans won’t have to endure as long for series 3. On Wednesday, Netflix confirmed that the third instalment of the Korean thriller will arrive in 2025.

    Series 2’s shocking cliffhanger

Series 2, which premiered in December last year, ended on a cliffhanger that left viewers reeling. In the final episode, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) leads a rebellion, culminating in the shocking death of his closest ally, Jung-bae (Lee Seo-hwan), at the hands of the Front Man (Lee Byung-hun). Unbeknownst to Gi-hun, the Front Man is actually In-ho, a former Squid Game champion who now oversees the deadly contest, disguising himself as Player 001 under the name Young-il.

Hwang Dong-hyuk’s vision for series 3

“I felt it was the right moment to pause and give [Gi-hun] some resolution,” Hwang Dong-hyuk, the show’s creator, had shared with Variety in an interview in December, last year. “But in series 3, he’ll grapple with guilt and failure. How he moves forward is the story we’ll dive into next,” he added. Gi-hun’s journey is expected to reach a critical juncture as he faces the consequences of his rebellion, impacting both himself and the shadowy organisation behind the deadly games.

    New challenges and emotional depth

While Netflix has not released an official synopsis, Hwang hinted at new games and intensified character dynamics. “Series 3 will introduce new games and push character dynamics further,” Lee Jung-jae revealed in a recent interview, while actor Kang Ae-sim, who plays Geum-ja (Player 149), added, “It will move you to tears.” The fresh challenges are expected to heighten tension, testing players’ physical and emotional limits.

    The return of the VIPs

Hwang also teased the return of the VIPs, the wealthy spectators who bet on the deadly competition. “They’re coming. Their helicopter is already in the air,” he told USA Today. The VIPs’ sinister presence promises to bring a new layer of conflict as their influence shapes the events unfolding on the island.

A teaser that hints at twists

Though Netflix has not yet released an official trailer for series 3, fans were treated to a brief teaser on X in January 2025. The 15-second clip introduced Chul-su, a boy counterpart to the eerie doll Young-hee, hinting at another unsettling twist in the deadly games.

    Release timeline

Squid Game series 3 is slated for a 2025 release, with a summer or autumn debut most likely. “I would expect it to launch around summer or autumn next year,” Hwang had told Variety in December 2024.
