An Update On The Surprisingly Close ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Release Date

This article was published on 12/30 and republished on 12/31.

If you’ve watched Squid Game season 2 at this point, you’ll know that it really only feels like half a season with a huge cliffhanger in the middle, and making it through (spoilers) only half of the current games.

But we will not have to wait another three years for season 3, thankfully, as both Netflix and creator Hwang Dong-hyuk have ensured that won’t happen by having no production breaks between seasons. The result is a season 3 of Squid Game that is much, much closer than we think.

We’ve previously heard a “2025” launch window, though that could have meant Christmas, a full year break. But now Hwang Dong-hyuk is saying that it’s closer, and might even potentially be just a half year until Squid Game returns. Here’s the window he’s giving when he was asked about a season 3 release date by Variety:

“At this point, anything I might say is going to be a spoiler, so I want to be cautious. But what I can say is, after Season 2 launches, I believe we will be announcing the launch date for Season 3 soon. I probably expect that to launch around summer or fall next year. But as for the storyline of the third season, Gi-hun having lost everything, including his best friend, and all of his attempts going to failure, it’s now, what is he going to be like? What state is Gi-hun going to be in? And what will he choose to do? Will he continue on with the mission? Is he going to give up or persist? And so you’re going to meet our character Gi-hun at a very critical crossroads as we begin the third season. Gi-hun will not be the man he was in Season 2.”

Early summer would be six months, very late fall would be closer to 11 months, if it’s November, but somewhere in the middle we can split the difference at maybe 8 or 9. Regardless, it is way outside the norm for Netflix to do literal yearly seasons, much less new seasons of a show coming in under a year. But it’s clear Squid Game season 2 and 3 are different cases, really just one very long season broken in half.

And yes, it was very much broken, one of the aspects that didn’t quite work with season 2 (spoilers follow). The two B and C plotlines about the cop finding the island and the guard interfering with an organ harvesting operation were built up all season but barely actually went anywhere, no doubt only paying off when season 3 gets here. And in season 1, we got through all six games in nine episodes. Here, we only got through three in seven episodes, and yes, it seems exceedingly likely all three will be played in season 3. At least we won’t have to wait that long.

Update (12:31): There are some interesting quotes on why Hwang Dong-hyuk decided to break up seasons 2 and 3 like this, given that season 2 feels like half a season with a whole litany of cliffhangers that are kind of frustrating once the finale airs. Spoilers follow.

“No other particular reason than that I originally envisioned it as a single series, so both seasons two and three as a single series when I was writing it. But then, as I wrote the story along, it became to be too many episodes and too long of a story because you see Gi-hun’s journey where he returns to the game, but also he goes through a revolt, and that is actually the climax of that storyline, where he tries to create an uprising, but then that all goes to failure.”

“And I also saw that aspect of it as yet another game as well, and so I thought that we would divide it into two seasons to have that – Gi-hun’s revolt going into a failure, him ending up losing his best friend, that itself being yet another important climatic event in the first half of the season, so into season two.”

This seems like a case where this was not actually a Netflix-mandated decision, as recently they have been splitting seasons of returning popular shows in half. Rather, here there were just too many episodes, likely another seven at an hour or more each, and Netflix does not air 14 episode, 14 hours seasons like, ever. But they also clearly did not want to wait three years for this story to be finished, so it will work at least more similarly to one of its traditional “breaks,” albeit with a 6-12 month gap rather than a 1-2 month one the way many 10 episode seasons are split.

‘Squid Game’ season 2 scene-stealer Thanos is played by a real-life rapper. Here’s what to know about Choi Seung-hyun.

    • Fans and critics are raving about a new player in “Squid Game” season two, Thanos.

    • Thanos is a rapper who seems to delight in the death games.

    • Choi Seung-hyun, who plays Thanos, was already a popular K-pop star before landing the role.

Warning: spoilers ahead for “Squid Game” season two.

“Squid Game” season two introduces a new cast of eccentric players, but the character fans and critics are talking about most is Thanos.

Thanos (Player 230), named after the alien the Avengers fight in the Marvel movies, is a purple-haired, self-absorbed, and callous internet rapper and one of the main antagonists of season two.

He takes over from season one’s Jang Deok-su (Player 101) as the main bully within the deadly children’s games. But while Deok-su was a menacing criminal, Thanos is a celebrity and a wild card.

Thanos and his sidekick Nam-gyu (Roh Jae-won) seem to enjoy the games, unlike the other characters who are competing for money to pay off their debts. They laugh, skip, and take drugs from Thanos’ secret stash as people are killed around them and continually vote to continue the slaughter.

Choi Seung-hyun’s screwball performance as Thanos has been getting a lot of praise, including from The Wrap, which hailed it as one of the best TV performances of 2024.

“Squid Game” season two is looking to be a global hit like the first, which could raise Choi’s profile outside South Korea, as it did with other actors from the show including Lee Jung-jae.

Here’s what to know about Choi and his character’s fate.

Choi began his career as a K-pop rapper

Choi is better known by his stage name T.O.P, which he adopted in 2006 when he joined the boyband Bigbang, one of the first K-pop bands to become popular in the West.

The band’s fifth record, 2012’s “Alive,” was the second album by a South Korean artist to chart on the US Billboard 200, placing 150th.

In 2016, they were the first South Korean band to be included in Forbes’ top 100 richest celebrities list, after earning $44 million that year: more than Drake, Katy Perry, and Maroon 5, respectively.

Choi, who was an underground rapper before joining Bigbang, has also released hit solo tracks “Turn It Up” and “Doom Dada,” but hasn’t reached the heights he did with the band.

In 2007, Choi began pursuing acting, appearing in the TV romance K-drama “I Am Sam.” He has starred in other shows and movies, and won acting awards in Korea.

In “Iris,” a thriller TV series, Choi acted alongside “Squid Game” star Lee Byung-hun, who plays the Frontman in the Netflix show.

Choi’s career in Korea stalled after he was convicted of using marijuana

In 2017, Choi paused his career to complete military service as a conscripted police officer.

However, that June, Choi was indicted by South Korean prosecutors for using marijuana several times in October 2016.

A day later, Choi was found unconscious after overdosing on prescribed tranquilizers, and hospitalized.

A month later, Choi pleaded guilty to using marijuana in court and was sentenced 10-months in jail, suspended for two years. He also had to complete his military service as a public service worker instead of as a police officer as planned.

He told reporters at the court: “I’m truly sorry that I disappointed my fans and the public. I will do my best to make a fresh start and not to make such a mistake again with what I’ve learned from this lesson.”

Choi appeared in Bigbang’s single “Still Life” in 2022, but that year YG Entertainment announced that he had ended his contract with the company, and a year later, Choi confirmed he had withdrawn from the band.

Choi will likely not return in ‘Squid Game’ season three

“Squid Game” is a bold return for Choi, especially playing a character who openly uses drugs.

Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of “Squid Game,” told People before the series aired that it took “a lot of guts” for Choi to portray Thanos.

“Despite the long hiatus, I have to say, as a director, he performed very impressively and I’m very satisfied with what he did with the character,” Hwang said.

In the season finale, there is a brutal fight in the men’s changing rooms between those who want to stay in the games and those who want to leave. Thanos, the instigator of the brawl, is stabbed in the neck with a fork and bleeds to death.

So, it’s unlikely Thanos will return in season three unless there is some sort of flashback.

Park Jong-nam, who appeared on SBS’s “Master of Life”, said on Instagram on the 26th, “Debut on Netflix! He did not appear as a squid, but as a hand-in-hand,” he posted, revealing that he played Kang Ha-neul’s hand-in-hand in “Squid Game 2.”

He said, “I got a call in the evening two days before my wedding in October last year. I’m calling you because I got your contact information from the producer of ‘Master of Life’, but I can’t reveal it, but I need a scene with my hands in the air, so could you appear on it? But I have to come down to Daejeon, he recalled. “What’s fortunate is that it’s a day before the wedding, so I decided to appear on a vacation, but I wondered what it would be like to play air.”

The next day, I went to Daejeon and wrote a huge security pledge. He asked me to eat lunch first, so I followed him to the restaurant, and I ate with Lee Byung-hun, Lee Jung-jae, Kang Ha-neul and the director who contacted me. I can’t believe I’m eating at the same table with these famous actors in my life. You’re getting married tomorrow. How did you become so good at it? Congratulations on your wedding. I ate while talking about things like that, he said. “It’s a shame that famous actors congratulated us on our marriage, but we couldn’t leave a photo because of security.”

Park Jong-nam also said, “The set was not difficult because we had to take a one-take shot from the first stage to the break, but I was so nervous because I had to do it with the actors from the three angles of two people. I filmed it twice and it ended faster than I thought. It is impressive that Kang Ha-neul continued to relax before and after filming. They asked me to teach them how to play the ball, so I told them and wore a jegi together. I remember that he also gave me Sungsimdang leek bread to give it to his wife after filming. I think I know why Kang Ha-neul is doing Kang Ha-neul,” he said, expressing his gratitude to Kang Ha-neul.

“And we kept it a secret for a year, and today we’ll reveal the Squid Game! It’s so much fun watching it with my wife. Since I came out, I hope it works out even better! “Way to go for the squid game.”

Season 2 of “Squid Game” showed Kang Dae-ho (played by Kang Ha-neul) playing air with his colorful hands. Park Jong-nam, an air master, played an active role as Kang Ha-neul’s hand.

Bringing an end to a long wait of three years, the popular South Korean Netflix show Squid Game has finally returned with the second season, already emerging as a global sensation and surpassing the success of its predecessor. While Squid Game has all the right reasons to gain popularity and grow high in viewership, the show has had a fair share of controversies, mainly surrounding its cast members. After Season 1, actors from the second part are now making headlines over their past scandals.

With Squid Game season 2 creating a lot of buzz, take a look at some of the major controversies surrounding the lead actors.

    Squid Game Controversies

    1. Lee Jung Jae, known for popularly portraying the lead character of Seong Gi Hun aka Player 456 has received massive success since his performance in the first part. However, his past controversies continue to resurface online, leaving fans shocked. As per a Koreaboo report, Lee Jung Jae has been found guilty of multiple DUIs along with assault cases. In 1999, he was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after crashing his BMW into a car. As a result, his driver’s license was revoked. In 2002, Jung Jae got another DUI. His assault cases go back to 2000 when the actor allegedly assaulted a 30-year-old man with a friend during an argument at a bar in Seoul Cheongadamdong. The second assault was reported in the same year when the actor was accused of injuring a 22-year-old woman in front of a nightclub.

However, Lee Jung Jae’s controversy doesn’t just end here as he has also been in a legal dispute with Raemongraein, a drama production company he acquired recently this year.

    2. Another prominent face to have been a target of controversy was O Yeong Su, known for playing Oh II Nam or Player 001. He was indicted in November 2022 for his inappropriate behaviour with an actress. While the actor initially denied the charges, he was later found guilty and sentenced to 8 months in prison, with a two-year suspension.

    3. Lee Byung Hun, who got a meatier role in the second season as The Front Man, Hwang In Ho is one of the most renowned artists, even showcasing his talent in Hollywood. He is also not without controversy. Back in 2009, Lee Byung Hun’s ex-girlfriend reportedly sued him for being a chronic gambler, claiming that she was tricked into a sexual relationship with him under the promise of marriage. The charges were later cleared while his ex-girlfriend’s lawsuit was dropped due to her lack of participation.

    4. A new face in season 2 is the former BigBang member T.O.P., who has already stirred a lot of discussion since his announcement as a new contestant. T.O.P.’s past controversies surrounding substance abuse have left fans divided over his casting in the show, especially as someone who consumes drunk during the games. In 2017, reports came around his prosecution without detention for the use of marijuana during his mandatory military service.

    5. Park Sung Hoon who has been receiving praise for his role as a transgender woman in Squid Game Season 2 has also joined the list of controversial actors. Recently, the actor shared a parody Japanese adult video of the Netflix show, which instantly went viral and left fans furious. Sung Hoon deleted the post while his agency BH Entertainment addressed the matter, calling it a mistake.

News movies A Look At Controversies Surrounding Squid Game’s Lee Jung Jae, O Yeong Su And Lee Byung Hun

Squid Game has taken the world by storm, captivating audiences with its intense storyline and shocking twists. However, the show has not been without its fair share of controversies, particularly surrounding its lead actors Lee Jung Jae, O Yeong Su, and Lee Byung Hun.

Lee Jung Jae, who plays the enigmatic frontman Seong Gi Hun in Squid Game, has faced criticism for his past involvement in a gambling scandal. In 2014, he was caught up in an illegal gambling ring and was fined 30 million won (approximately $27,000 USD) for his involvement. Despite this, Lee Jung Jae has continued to enjoy a successful acting career and has received critical acclaim for his performance in Squid Game.

O Yeong Su, who portrays the cunning and ruthless player Jang Deok Su in the series, has also come under fire for his past behavior. In 2017, he was involved in a hit-and-run incident where he struck a pedestrian with his car and fled the scene. O Yeong Su later turned himself in and was sentenced to six months in prison for the incident. Despite this controversy, his portrayal of Jang Deok Su has been praised for its intensity and depth.

Lee Byung Hun, who plays the mysterious and powerful VIP in Squid Game, has faced his own share of controversies in the past. In 2014, he became embroiled in a blackmail scandal involving a former trainee who threatened to release a video of him engaging in explicit behavior unless he paid a large sum of money. Lee Byung Hun took legal action against the individual and the case was eventually resolved, but the incident tarnished his reputation in the industry.

Despite these controversies, the performances of Lee Jung Jae, O Yeong Su, and Lee Byung Hun in Squid Game have been widely praised by both critics and audiences. The actors have showcased their talent and skill in bringing their complex characters to life, contributing to the show’s immense success. While their past actions may be problematic, there is no denying the impact they have had on the cultural phenomenon that is Squid Game.

The revelation has sparked outrage and calls for accountability, with many questioning whether he should be allowed to continue working in the industry.

  • An Update On The Surprisingly Close ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Release Date

An Update On The Surprisingly Close ‘Squid Game’ Season 3 Release Date

• Squid Game 2 Actor Song Young-Chang Faces Backlash For Past Child Prostitution Charges

Squid Game 2 Actor Song Young-Chang Faces Backlash For Past Child Prostitution Charges

Following the unprecedented global success of Squid Game’s first season, the highly anticipated second season has finally arrived on screens. While viewers and critics are sharing mixed reactions to the new installment, one casting choice has sparked significant controversy among audiences.

The inclusion of actor Song Young Chang in the cast has drawn particular attention, largely due to his controversial past. The actor faced serious legal troubles in September 2000 when he was arrested on charges related to inappropriate conduct with a minor. According to reports, he was accused of having sexual relations with a 16-year-old on two occasions in his vehicle near a park in Goyang.

The case gained notable attention partly due to its unusual circumstances. Unlike typical cases that result from undercover police operations, this incident came to light because the minor recognized Song from his acting work. This recognition played a crucial role in the subsequent legal proceedings.

The incident had severe professional consequences for Song. Following these events, he was permanently barred from appearing on major South Korean broadcasting networks, including KBS, EBS, and MBC. This effectively limited his mainstream television appearances, leading him to focus primarily on stage performances in musical theater.

The revelation of his casting in such a high-profile production has sparked intense discussion across Korean online communities. Many viewers have expressed shock and disappointment at the production team’s decision to include an actor with such a controversial background in the series.

The backlash highlights ongoing debates about accountability, redemption, and the entertainment industry’s responsibility when making casting decisions.

Recently, actor Song Young-Chang, who played one of the prominent roles in the hit Netflix series Squid Game 2, has faced backlash after reports resurfaced about his past involvement in child prostitution charges.

The actor, who gained fame for his portrayal of a ruthless villain in the popular show, has been accused of engaging in illegal activities involving minors in the past. These allegations have sparked outrage among fans and critics alike, with many calling for his removal from the show and a boycott of his work.

While Song Young-Chang has not yet responded to the backlash, the controversy surrounding his past actions has raised questions about the entertainment industry’s responsibility to hold its members accountable for their past transgressions. As the debate continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how this scandal will impact the actor’s career and the future of Squid Game 2.

Following stand-out turns in Netflix’s Squid Game and Disney+’s The Acolyte, South Korean actor Lee Jung-jae might be set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

According to scooper MTTSH, Jung-jae is in talks for an undisclosed MCU role.

This isn’t actually the first time the actor has been rumored for a Marvel part, as there was some talk of him being in negotiations to play Mr. Negative in Sony’s SSU last year (nothing ever came of it, of course).

The Acolyte proved to be one of Lucasfilm’s more divisive Star Wars shows, but most fans would likely be in agreement that Jung-jae’s Jedi Master Sol was a standout.

While speaking to Vanity Fair about season 2 of Squid Game – which is currently streaming – Jung-jae reflected on the backlash the show received from certain fans, with some cast members being subjected to racist, homophobic and misogynistic abuse online.

“My feelings were hurt,” he admitted. “Especially for Leslye Headland—her feelings must have hurt a lot. I can only have faith that racism will end someday, even though it’s going to be hard.”

Lee added that he is optimistic that viewers will revisit The Acolyte down the line, and may gain a new appreciation for the High Republic Era-set tale. “For some work, it takes time to gain traction, and I have strong hopes that people will like it as time passes.”

Sol was killed off in the finale, and likely wouldn’t have been back for a second season, anyway, but there were a number of plot threads and character arcs left unresolved, including the much-discussed live-action introduction of Darth Plagueis.

Are there any Marvel Comics characters you’d like to see Lee Jung-jae suit-up as in the MCU? Drop us a comment down below.

In The Acolyte, an investigation into a shocking crime spree pits a respected Jedi Master (Lee Jung-jae) against a dangerous warrior from his past (Amandla Stenberg). As more clues emerge, they travel down a dark path where sinister forces reveal all is not what it seems.

The series stars Amandla Stenberg, Lee Jung-jae, Manny Jacinto, Dafne Keen, Charlie Barnett, Jodie Turner-Smith, Rebecca Henderson, Dean-Charles Chapman, Joonas Suotamo, and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Leslye Headland created the series, based on Star Wars by George Lucas, and serves as an executive producer along with Kathleen Kennedy, Simon Emanuel, Jeff F. King and Jason Micallef. Charmaine DeGraté and Kor Adana are the co-executive producers. Rayne Roberts, Damian Anderson, Eileen Shim and Rob Bredow are the producers.

Headland also directed the premiere episodes (Eps. 101 & 102). Directors Kogonada (Eps. 103 & 107), Alex Garcia Lopez (Eps. 104 & 105) and Hanelle Culpepper (Eps. 106 & 108) round out the directing duties on the series.

Exciting news for Marvel fans! According to recent reports, Lee Jung-jae, best known for his roles in “The Acolyte” and the hit series “Squid Game,” is rumored to be in talks for a role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

While details about the potential role are still under wraps, fans are buzzing with speculation about which character Lee Jung-jae could bring to life on the big screen. With his impressive acting chops and charisma, there’s no doubt that he would be a welcome addition to the ever-expanding MCU.

  • ‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Just Broke A Huge Netflix Record

‘Squid Game’ Season 2 Just Broke A Huge Netflix Record

We knew that Squid Game would be huge when it returned for season 2, given that season 1 was the most-watched Netflix series ever by a significant margin. But now it has set an entirely new record.

We don’t know viewership yet, it’s too early for that, though of course that’s going to be enormous. Rather, the record in question is that Squid Game season 2 is the first series to debut at #1 in all 93 countries where Netflix is available. That’s everywhere from the US, of course, to Cyprus to Honduras to Kenya to Oman to Thailand. The entire globe.

This simply doesn’t happen. Even big shows that do well on global charts never debut simultaneously at #1 on the service, as some regions always prefer one series over another, however popular. But here this is a clean sweep for Squid Game, which is not something the original achieved as it took some time to go fully viral. But not Stranger Things, not Wednesday, not anything else.

Now we wait for viewership. I did not imagine that Squid Game season 2 would be able to break the 2.2 billion hours viewed of season 1, but I suppose I cannot rule it out with a debut like this. You might think that subsequent seasons of shows cannot get higher viewership by definition if you need to catch up on a series, but that just isn’t the case. Shows like Money Heist and Stranger Things have much higher viewership than when they started.

If there is one thing working against Squid Game season 2 in this case, it’s that this season is just 7 episodes, down from 9 in season 1, meaning completing the season would be two less hours per viewer. Though it could get more viewers overall.

Additionally, Squid Game season 2 is not being received as well as season 1. It’s down to a 63% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes as opposed to an 83% for season 1. I suspect that much of this is due to the fact that this feels like more like half a season with (spoilers) the show stopping in the middle of the games with the rest to be finished in season 3 next year. It does end somewhat abruptly and plotlines that were built up end up going nowhere, perhaps a bit too much of a set-up for season 3. So I certainly understand the criticism.

I suspect that Squid Game season 2 will put up much better numbers than season 1 at least in its debut week, but long term? Can it catch the original? That remains to be seen, but this record-breaking debut could not be a better start.
