Harlem postal worker killed: Woman charged after USPS employee stabbed inside deli while working in Manhattan, NYC

HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) — A woman has been charged after a USPS worker was stabbed and killed inside a deli while on the job in Harlem on Thursday afternoon, police said.

Jaia Cruz, 24, of Harlem was charged with the murder of 36-year-old Ray Hodges, according to police.

Officers responded to the deli at 168 Lenox Avenue after 2:30 p.m. and found Hodges stabbed or slashed multiple times inside the deli, including in the torso, arms, back and neck.

He was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem where he was pronounced dead.

“I know the guys that deliver mail,” said resident Uzo Guchiaschi. “And just like this he’s gone. It’s very scary. It’s very, very scary.”

Police say the attack appears to have stemmed from a dispute between two customers over who ordered first, then turned physical.

    A weapon has been recovered.

Eyewitness News spoke to a friend of the person of interest, and while she did not know what, or why this happened, she said it’s not in her friend’s character to have attacked someone without a reason. She said her friend wouldn’t have hurt someone unless provoked.

“She’s a nice young lady. She is not the type that just come out in the street an attacking people,” the friend said. “This is just a bad neighborhood. What happened — I have no idea because I was not around yet. I don’t know, but I do know, if she said it was in self defense, it was in self defense.”

Meanwhile, a group of distraught postal workers arrived on the scene, solemn and visibly shaken, struggling with how to process what happened to their colleague.

“All I’m going to say is he was a nice young man. That’s it,” said postal worker Kathy Singleton.

They say he went into the deli to buy a sandwich when the confrontation unfolded.

Deli workers had a similar account, telling Eyewitness News that the dispute was over a sandwich and who placed their order first.

Hodges’ postal cart was still sitting on the sidewalk outside Thursday night.

The United States Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) released a statement confirming that the postal worker was assigned to Manhattan, and was the victim of a homicide.

“USPIS takes matters involving the safety and wellbeing of postal service employees as a top priority. We are working diligently with the New York City Police Department on this investigation,” the statement said.

It’s unclear what weapon the postal worker was stabbed and slashed with.

    The investigation is ongoing.

Ms. Artis said her first reaction to the news had been to break down in tears. “I told him ‘Happy New Year’s’ this morning,” she said.

Pregnant woman stabbed 14 times by pizza delivery driver over $2 tip: Police

A pregnant woman who ordered pizza in Florida was stabbed 14 times by a delivery driver who police say was disgruntled over her $2 tip.

Osceola County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the Riviera Motel in Kissimmee, Florida, over reports of a home invasion and stabbing on Dec. 22, according to an arrest affidavit obtained by ABC News.

Arriving deputies located a victim, Melinda Irizarry, who was stabbed multiple times and was then transported to an area hospital.

She underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured lung and suffered stab wounds to the chest, arms, legs and abdomen, according to the affidavit.

Irizarry is currently in stable condition, the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office said in an update on Facebook.

Authorities identified 22-year-old Brianna Alvelo as the delivery driver and suspect in the case, according to the affidavit.

    Osceola County Sheriff’s Office

Officials say that Irizarry placed an order at Marcos Pizza Shop and 30 minutes later the suspect believed to be Alvelo arrived at their motel with the order, which totaled $33.10.

Irizarry handed the suspect a $50 bill and requested change, however, to which she was told it was store policy not to provide change, the affidavit said.

After getting smaller bills to fulfill the order, Irizarry ended up giving the driver a $2 tip. After the incident, Irizarry told deputies the driver “rolled her eyes and walked away without saying anything,” according to the affidavit.

Officials said Alvelo allegedly later returned to the victim’s motel room with an unknown male suspect — who was armed with a firearm — and “forced their way into the room.”

Alvelo, who deputies say was armed with a knife, attacked the victim and stabbed her 14 times, according to the affidavit.

Police say items were also taken from the motel room in the invasion.

Alvelo was arrested on home invasion with a firearm, attempted murder, kidnapping, and aggravated assault violations, according to the affidavit.

Officials say the unknown male suspect is still at large and request anyone with information regarding the case to contact Crimeline at (800) 423-8477.

The suspect has been arrested and is facing charges of attempted murder. This horrifying incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that women face every day, even in seemingly mundane situations.

  • Shooting wounds 2 at Phoenix airport, 1 other stabbed, police say

Shooting wounds 2 at Phoenix airport, 1 other stabbed, police say

PHOENIX (AP) — A shooting at Sky Harbor Airport in Phoenix left two people injured by gunfire and another person stabbed in an incident related to a family dispute, police say.

Phoenix police said the shooting happened at about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at an airport restaurant located outside the security checkpoints in Terminal 4. A woman and two adult males were shot, leaving the female with injuries police described as life-threatening, they said.

The woman remained in critical condition Thursday, while three other people who were brought to the hospital were treated and released. Police said after consulting with county prosecutors that no arrests were made. They emphasized the investigation of the airport shooting was ongoing.

The group of people all knew each other and had a physical fight that led one of them to pull out a gun and fire the weapon, police said.

“I do believe that this was a family dispute that escalated,” Phoenix police Sgt. Mayra Reeson told reporters. During the fight, a man fired a gun multiple times, striking a woman woman and a male, who was armed with a knife and then cut the shooter, according to police. Another man received minor injuries, police said.

Although police said previously that three people were shot in the incident, they later said two people were shot and that it was unknown whether another injured person was shot or cut.

After the gunfire, a man and a girl were detained in an airport parking garage nearby. Police haven’t revealed why the group was at the airport, and whether they were traveling or were there for some other reason.

The gunfire led to the temporary closure of a security checkpoint at the terminal, the closure of some restaurants and a pause in service at the terminal’s PHX Sky Train station.

“Of course this was scary, this was Christmas evening, everybody’s trying to get home,” Reeson said.

In what Reeson described as a “completely unrelated” incident nearly two hours after the shooting, she said a man showed up at the airport with guns. “This man received a text message that he believed there was an active shooter at Sky Harbor, Reeson said.

Investigators say the man handed his guns to other people at the airport before approaching an officer, yelled at the officer and didn’t follow his commands to stop, according to police. The officer took the man to the ground. During the struggle, he spat on an officer, police said.

Sky Harbor, one of the largest commercial airports in the U.S., is a hub for American Airlines and a main connecting point for passengers on Southwest and Frontier Airlines.

—- This story corrects the number of people who were shot at the airport to two, not three as Phoenix police had previously reported. —

Associated Press Staff Writer Jeff Martin in Atlanta contributed to this report.

In a shocking incident at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, two people were shot and one person was stabbed in a violent altercation. The chaos unfolded in the busy airport, leaving travelers and staff in a state of panic.

According to police, the shooting occurred near Terminal 4 of the airport, resulting in two individuals sustaining gunshot wounds. In addition, one person was stabbed during the altercation. The motives behind the attack are still unclear, and authorities are actively investigating the incident.

The airport was placed on lockdown following the violence, causing disruptions to flights and delays for passengers. Law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene, securing the area and attending to the injured victims.

As the investigation unfolds, authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. The safety and security of travelers and airport personnel remain a top priority, and measures are being taken to ensure the well-being of all individuals at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Florida pizza delivery woman stabbed a pregnant customer 14 times over bad tip, police say

A delivery driver allegedly returned to a Florida motel where a couple was staying and stabbed a woman multiple times this week over being tipped $2 on an order, police said.

Brianna Alvelo, 22, is charged with attempted murder, home invasion with a firearm, kidnapping and aggravated assault, according to court records. A man who allegedly accompanied Alvelo during the incident has not yet been identified.

A woman, her boyfriend, and the woman’s 5-year-old daughter were staying at a Kissimmee motel to celebrate a birthday and ordered a Marco’s pizza on Sunday, according to an affidavit filed in Alvelo’s case. The affidavit is based on the woman’s interview with the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

Alvelo delivered the pizza, which cost about $33, and was asked to give change for a $50 bill, the affidavit said. But Alvelo did not have change and the woman searched for smaller bills, allegedly only giving Alvelo a $2 tip in the end.

Sometime later, the woman said she heard a loud knocking on the door, the affidavit said. A man and woman clad in all black wearing face masks allegedly forced themselves into the room when she opened the door.

The man brandished a silver revolver and demanded the woman’s boyfriend go into the bathroom, the affidavit said. And the other person, believed to be Alvelo, allegedly pulled out a pocket knife.

According to the affidavit, Alvelo rummaged through the woman’s purse and broke her daughter’s Nintendo Switch. The woman said she turned to shield her child and felt a strike to her lower back.

She then “threw her daughter onto the bed and attempted to pick up her phone,” the affidavit said.

But Alvelo allegedly grabbed the phone, smashed it, and “began striking her multiple times with the knife.” The man who had the gun then yelled it was time to go, stopping the assault, according to the affidavit.

The woman was stabbed 14 times, with wounds to the chest, arms, legs, and abdomen. She discovered she was pregnant while receiving treatment at a local hospital, the affidavit said.

Alvelo is being held at the Osceola County Jail on a $55,000 bail and does not have an attorney listed for her.

NBC South Florida reported that prosectors requested she be held without bond during her appearance in court, stating that this is a “punishable by life offense.”

Investigators reviewed motel security camera footage that showed a woman parking a red Toyota at around 10 p.m. and approaching the couple’s motel room. The interaction appeared consistent with the woman’s account of the delivery incident, the affidavit said.

Security footage then shows a red Toyota back in the parking lot and two people with face masks returning to the couple’s room roughly an hour and a half later, the affidavit said.

A manager at the Marco’s Pizza location confirmed to investigators that Alvelo was working the night of the incident, as well as the fact that she drives a red Toyota Camry. He also gave police a copy of her timecard, verifying that she finished her shift at 10:20 p.m. that night.

The Osceola County Sheriff’s Office is asking that anyone with information on the incident contact the Crimeline at (800) 423-8477.
