Gavin & Stacey viewers have noticed a glaring continuity error in the Christmas Special finale.

The show returned for a final time on Christmas Day this year, with the much-anticipated episode finally answering the fate of Nessa and Smithy’s relationship, picking up from 2019’s cliffhanger that saw Nessa get down on one knee.

Viewers were quick to spot a continuity mistake during Mick Shipman’s touching speech to Smithy on his stag night. The tear-jerking scene showed an emotional Mick describing Smithy as a second son, after he and his wife Pam struggled to conceive another child after having Gavin.

However, one fan pointed out on TikTok that during the scene, Mick’s pint appeared to go from full to half-full and back to full again.

They captioned the post: “Who else noticed Mick’s pint?”

“I spotted it right away,” said one viewer, as another joked: “Mick showing he can still drink the younger blokes under the table.”

A continuity error is a discrepancy in a scene or storyline that breaks the believability of the storyline. They can be subtle, like a character’s clothing being changed, or something disappearing from a table.

In the lead-up to the special’s release, the show’s co-creator Ruth Jones admitted that she noticed a mistake in the plot of the 2019 episode, which involves a blunder over the amount of Christmas puddings that were misplaced at the pub.

The episode, which ended on a cliffhanger with Jones’ character Nessa proposing to Smithy (James Corden), became one of the most-watched Christmas specials in the UK in 2019, with 17 million people watching the programme.

Speaking to Magic Radio about noticing the mistake, Jones explained: “I watched the 2019 Christmas special the other night and I noticed a glaring continuity error. You know Pam leaves the Christmas puddings behind and forgets to take them because they have been otherwise occupied and they are mortified?”

“Then Jason arrives and he’s stopped at the shop and he’s picked up Christmas puddings as well. So the next morning, when they haven’t got the Christmas puddings, one of them, and I can’t remember who it is, says ‘have we left nine Christmas puddings in the pub?’ There’s 18, there’s double.”

Co-creator James Corden didn’t seem fussed by the error – pointing out that it isn’t specified in the episode how many Christmas puddings either character had bought.

    The ‘Gavin & Stacey’ cast

The ‘Gavin & Stacey’ cast (BBC/Toffee International Ltd./Tom Jackson)

He told Jones: “Does Bryn say that they have bought nine? No. Nobody says how many they’ve bought, and also, you don’t have a Christmas pudding each on Christmas Day. What I thought that happened is they’d bought four or five and then Jason turned up and bought four.”

The pair got into the technicalities of the pudding debacle, with Jones arguing that she thought the puddings were individual desserts rather than large ones. But Corden pointed out that the bag appeared to be heavy, which suggested it contained larger puddings.

The show returned to BBC One on Christmas Day this year with a 90-minute, one-off festive episode, marking the first time fans had been reunited with Gavin, Stacey, Smithy, Nessa and co since the last Christmas special in 2019.

In this year’s episode, many were shocked to see Smithy preparing for a wedding with Laura Aikman’s Sonia instead in a surprise twist.

Their wedding came to an abrupt stop, however, when Mathew Horne’s Gavin stood up to say he thought his friend was making a mistake, and eventually, Smithy decided to leave Sonia at the altar.

Smithy then rushed to Nessa to declare his love to her and propose on one knee. “We’re messy and not perfect,” he told her, “but I love you Nessa and I always have. Well, not always, but most of the time… I love you, will you marry me?”

In the highly-anticipated Gavin & Stacey Christmas special that aired on December 25th, viewers were quick to point out a glaring continuity error that left many scratching their heads.

The error occurred during a scene at the Shipman’s house when Stacey is seen wearing a red jumper, but in the very next shot, she is suddenly wearing a blue one. This seemingly small mistake did not go unnoticed by fans of the show, who took to social media to express their confusion and disappointment.

Many fans expressed their disappointment that such a beloved show would have such an obvious mistake, especially in a highly-anticipated Christmas special. Some speculated that it may have been a last-minute change in wardrobe that was missed during editing, while others simply found it distracting and took away from their enjoyment of the episode.

Despite the error, the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special was still a hit with viewers, bringing in millions of viewers and sparking renewed interest in the beloved series. Hopefully, future episodes will pay closer attention to detail to avoid such mistakes in the future.

Two streaming giants ready to go to war with BBC for Gavin & Stacey spin-off by offering multi-million deals

TWO of the biggest streamers are poised to go to war with the Beeb for any Gavin & Stacey spin-off by offering multi-million pound deals to the creators.

The Sun exclusively revealed this year how Netflix wanted to snap up the festive special, which ultimately aired on BBC One on Christmas Day — with 12.5million viewers tuning in.

Now Disney+ and Apple TV+ are said to be considering approaching creators Ruth Jones and James Corden and the sitcom’s producers about any future version.

A TV insider said: “They see the viewing figures for the Christmas episode and realise how Gavin & Stacey has massive longevity.

“More and more of the streamers, who are often associated more with the US, want to be seen as having an increasing amount of distinctly ‘British’ content.

“Gavin and Stacey, and any spin-off, fits that bill perfectly, so they’ll be willing to shell out seven or eight-figure sums to secure a deal.”

Netflix has already ruled itself out of any bidding war, yesterday a spokeswoman for Netflix UK was saying they have: “never been in any discussions about Gavin & Stacey.”

But other streamers have already shown they are keen to bag more UK-based programmes, particularly newly developed comedy series.

Disney+ aired a TV adaptation of The Full Monty in 2023 and this year Apple TV+ gave us comedy series The Completely Made up Adventures of Dick Turpin, with English comedian Noel Fielding.

The Sun revealed last week how BBC bosses were keen for a Gavin & Stacey spin-off after the finale scored the highest Christmas Day TV audience for 16 years.

Central characters Nessa and Smithy — played by Jones and Corden — got married in the sitcom’s conclusion, which brought an end to the series after 17 years.

But it did not close the door on possible breakaway shows starring some of the other loved characters.

Just before the finale aired, Corden discussed writing with Jones once again.

He said: “I can honestly say, for me personally, if we didn’t attempt to try and even just explore the idea of writing together I’d be so disappointed.”

The huge interest in the beloved programme is set to continue tomorrow — on New Year’s Day at 7pm — when BBC One airs an hour-long documentary, Gavin & Stacey: A Fond Farewell.

It will be an official goodbye to the show, featuring interviews with all of the cast members as well as behind-the-scenes footage of filming for the Christmas Day finale.

Two streaming giants, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, are reportedly gearing up for a battle with the BBC over the rights to a Gavin & Stacey spin-off series. According to sources, both platforms are prepared to offer multi-million dollar deals to secure the highly anticipated show.

Gavin & Stacey, created by James Corden and Ruth Jones, was a smash hit for the BBC when it first aired in 2007. The show follows the long-distance relationship between Gavin, played by Mathew Horne, and Stacey, played by Joanna Page, as well as the quirky dynamics of their families.

Fans have been clamoring for a spin-off or revival of the beloved series for years, and it seems that their wishes may soon be granted. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video are said to be in talks with Corden and Jones about developing a new show that would pick up where Gavin & Stacey left off.

Both streaming giants are known for their deep pockets and willingness to invest in high-profile projects, so it’s no surprise that they are willing to go head-to-head with the BBC for the rights to the Gavin & Stacey spin-off. With multi-million dollar deals on the table, it’s clear that they are serious about bringing the beloved characters back to the small screen.

It remains to be seen which platform will ultimately win the bidding war, but one thing is for certain – fans of Gavin & Stacey are in for a treat as the battle for the spin-off heats up. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting development!

  • ‘Gavin & Stacey’ Star Laura Aikman Kept Finale Secret From Her Family

‘Gavin & Stacey’ Star Laura Aikman Kept Finale Secret From Her Family

“Gavin & Stacey” star Laura Aikman took her NDA so seriously she even kept her appearance in the 90-minute special a secret from her own family.

Aikman, who plays the widely-disliked Sonia in the cult BBC series, posted a video of herself watching “Gavin & Stacey: The Finale” on Christmas Day with her family, who appeared to have no idea she was about to make an appearance on screen. In the scene, James Corden, who co-created and stars in the series, is shown into a room to meet his “bride-to-be,” with the audience led to assume it’s his on-again-off-again partner Nessa (fellow co-creator Ruth Jones). Instead, it’s Sonia.

In the video Aikman showed her family screaming with surprise as they watched the scene, with Aikman laughing while a woman who appears to be her mother shouts “Oh my God… you never told me!”

Aikman captioned the video: “I take an NDA very seriously.”

The actor, who has also appeared opposite Jason Isaacs in Cary Grant biopic “Archie” and, most recently, alongside Sophie Turner in “Joan,” did not participate in press for “Gavin & Stacey: The Finale” and reportedly even stayed in a separate hotel to the rest of the cast so as to keep her appearance a surprise for fans.

The special, which saw Corden and Jones reunite on screen after an absence of five years, aired in the U.K. on Christmas Day, where it won the ratings war with 12.3 million viewers, beating out “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl,” which clocked up 9.4 million viewers and King Charles II’s annual Christmas speech, which saw 5 million people tune in.

Gavin & Stacey Star Laura Aikman Kept Finale Secret From Her Family

Fans of the hit British TV show Gavin & Stacey were left on the edge of their seats during the highly-anticipated finale, but one person who knew the ending all along was actress Laura Aikman. The star, who played the role of Sonia in the series, recently revealed that she kept the ending a secret from her own family.

In an interview with a popular entertainment magazine, Aikman confessed that she didn’t want to spoil the surprise for her loved ones, so she kept mum about the final twist in the show. “I knew how it was all going to end, but I couldn’t bring myself to tell my family. I wanted them to experience it for themselves and be just as shocked and delighted as the viewers,” she said.

Aikman’s dedication to keeping the secret paid off, as her family members were reportedly thrilled with the finale and praised her performance in the show. The actress has since expressed her gratitude for being a part of such a beloved series and for the support of her fans throughout the years.

As fans continue to rave about the Gavin & Stacey finale, it’s clear that Laura Aikman’s portrayal of Sonia will always hold a special place in their hearts. And who knows, maybe there could be a reunion on the horizon for the beloved characters. Only time will tell!

James Corden has admitted he wanted to “trick everybody” with the plotline for Gavin and Staceys eagerly awaited finale.

The hit BBC sitcom originally aired between 2007 and 2010, and returned in 2019 with a one-off festive special that ended on a cliffhanger when Ruth Jones’s character Nessa proposed to James Corden’s Smithy.

    *Spoilers ahead*

In the finale, which aired on Christmas Day, fans were left completely shocked when it turned out that Smithy had spent most of the episode preparing for a wedding with one of the show’s most disliked characters.

Sonia, played by Laura Aikman, returned for the one-off episode in an unexpected turn of events as she prepared to marry Smithy. The pair had broken up in the 2019 Christmas special after Sonia left Barry Island early and Smithy turned down her invitation to join.

At the wedding, Gavin, played by Mathew Horne, stands up to tell his friend Smithy that he is making a mistake. Nessa, meanwhile, is unable to attend the wedding as she’s on her way to Southampton to work on the boats.

In a dramatic turn of events, everyone rushes to stop Nessa leaving, as Smithy finally declares his love and gets down on one knee to propose. She says yes and the couple have an informal wedding in which the bride, true to her alternative nature, wears black.

“I remember it so vividly because I was in America at this point and I called Ruth, in this sort of, ‘Will we do it? Won’t we do it? Should we do it? Shall we do it?’” Corden told a panel at a screening of the finale in London, when asked about the “bait and switch” storyline.

Corden said he had wanted to ‘trick everyone’
Corden said he had wanted to ‘trick everyone’ (BBC)

“I had this idea at like three o’clock in the morning and I called Ruth and I was like, I wonder if we could trick everybody into thinking that for the first six or seven minutes they’re just going to watch a wedding between Sonia and Smithy.”

He explained that fan theories had prompted the storyline, “because what was really interesting is after the 2019 special, all that people would say to us was, ‘What does he say?’ They would never say ‘Who did he choose?’ I don’t even think it was in people’s peripheral. These two have been up and down.”

He shared Jones’s reaction as he said: “I remember calling Ruth on my drive into work and saying, ‘I wonder if we could do this’, and the way that writing the show works is I’ll just keep going to Ruth. I’m like a sort of excitable energizer bunny going, ‘What if?’ And Ruth goes, ‘Nah,’ I go, ‘What if?’ And then as soon as she goes, ‘Oh, yeah,’ I know that it’s great.”

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, James Corden opened up about the controversial plot twist in the latest season of Gavin and Stacey. The beloved sitcom, which returned for a Christmas special after a nine-year hiatus, left fans shocked and confused when it was revealed that Gavin had been cheating on Stacey.

Corden, who co-wrote and starred in the show, explained that the decision to introduce this plot twist was not made lightly. He wanted to challenge the characters and push them to their limits in order to explore the complexities of relationships and human emotions.

“It was a risky move, but we felt like it was important to shake things up and add some depth to the storyline,” Corden said. “We wanted to show that even the strongest relationships can face challenges and that people are not always perfect. It was a way to keep the show fresh and relevant while staying true to the characters we all know and love.”

Despite the backlash from some fans, Corden stands by the decision and hopes that viewers will appreciate the bold storytelling choices made in the Christmas special.

“We knew it would be controversial, but we wanted to take a chance and see where it would lead us,” Corden added. “I hope that fans can understand and appreciate the reasoning behind it, even if they may not agree with it. At the end of the day, we just want to continue telling honest and authentic stories that resonate with audiences.”

  • James Corden on Why Brits Are Mourning the End of ‘Gavin & Stacey’

James Corden on Why Brits Are Mourning the End of ‘Gavin & Stacey’

What started as an inconspicuous boy-meets-girl tale swiftly became a cult classic in the U.K. On Wednesday night, Gavin & Stacey aired its final episode on the BBC.

James Corden and co-creator Ruth Jones began this journey years ago, long before Corden had made any impact in the U.S. with appearances in Ocean’s Eight (2018), Cats (2019) and, of course, on The Late Late Show.

The Wales and Essex-set sitcom became a career springboard for the pair, solidifying their status as comedy greats in a competitive industry as Gavin & Stacey went on to enjoy a healthy 17-year lifespan.

In every U.K. household, Gavin & Stacey is a staple of British television. It began with a man from Billericay in Essex, Gavin Shipman (Mathew Horne), and a young woman, Stacey West (Joanna Page), from Barry in Wales. They fall in love talking over the phone while working for the same company at miles-apart branches and when they first meet in episode one, they hit it off.

As the show follows their blossoming relationship (and eventual marriage), what really conjures the magic is their wider families whose lives all become intertwined as Gavin and Stacey try to make their Billericay-to-Barry relationship work.

Corden plays Smithy, Gavin’s charismatic and food-lover of a best friend, while his Barry counterpart is Jones, playing Nessa: an enigmatic, unyielding black-bobbed woman with a deadpan tone and a thick Welsh accent to boot. (The two characters, despite the show’s name, become the will-they-won’t-they couple of the entire series). Gavin’s parents, the snobbish Pamela (Alison Steadman) and sweet father Mick (Larry Lamb) attempt to welcome Stacey’s soft-spoken mother, Gwen (Melanie Walters), and excitable uncle, Bryn (Rob Brydon), across the border and into their home.

The cast of Gavin & Stacey in the 2024 finale episode.

The cast chemistry is electric; it’s nailed-on, eccentric performances all round that have carved Gavin & Stacey into the British TV Hall of Fame. Corden and Jones are pros at spotlighting all the quirks of Welsh and English culture that resonate with their audience.

But it all culminated on Christmas Day when, after three seasons (2007-2010) and two Christmas specials (2019, 2024), the Shipman-Wests said goodnight on BBC One. Audiences were finally able to see the fallout and resolution after Nessa got down on one knee for Smithy to propose five years ago.

The cast, including Corden and Jones, were emotional as they discussed the finale at a press launch ahead of the episode’s release.

“The more I’ve thought about it, I wonder if it’s actually a lesson in patience,” Corden said about the show’s enduring popularity. “Particularly in television or the way that we consume stuff, we talk about content, we talk about consumers, and we talk about speed. And we’ve decided that speed is the single most important thing in everything that you can do.”

He continued: “I ordered it then, and it arrived then, and I watched it then. You get young people now watching things at twice the speed that it was ever meant to be formatted at. Here’s a show that ended 15 years ago, waited 10 years to tell another hour of the story, and waited five more years to end it completely. Maybe the lesson for all of us, for the people that write and talk about television, is actually time and patience and care might be the right answer for things to have longevity.”

Jones thanked Corden for their partnership, tearing up as she told him she loved him. “I think what has remained throughout all of the episodes is this sense of love: love between friends, love between family members, conventional boy-meets-girl stories and unconventional relationships [too],” she said, while Corden held her hand.

She added: “That’s remained the same and the lack of cynicism has remained the same. Basically, all the characters in the show really do love each other. Call it boring, but they do.”

Gavin & Stacey aired on BBC One at 9 p.m. London time Dec. 25 and is also available to watch on BBC iPlayer.

The Gavin and Stacey finale attracted an average of 12.3 million TV viewers – the largest Christmas Day audience in more than a decade, overnight data shows.

The new Wallace and Gromit film also attracted a large audience on BBC One, with more than 9 million viewers tuning in to watch the animated duo’s latest adventure.

Nearly 7 million people watched the King’s Christmas message on the BBC, ITV and Sky News.

All figures are based on “overnight” TV ratings – which do not include viewers who watch Christmas specials on catch-up services during the rest of the festive period.

The finale of Gavin and Stacey was the most watched show on Christmas Day since 2008.

An average of 14.3 million viewers tuned in to watch Wallace and Gromit in A Matter Of Loaf And Death that year.

This year’s new Gavin and Stacey episode followed on from an incredible cliffhanger which saw Nessa, played by Ruth Jones, get down on one knee in front of Smithy, played by James Corden, and ask him to marry her.

Charlotte Moore, the BBC’s Chief Content Officer, said Jones and Corden created a “magical finale that fans will treasure forever.”

“Their exquisitely written comedy creation is a show all about family, love and joy and it proved to be the unmissable TV event of the year,” she added.

This year’s viewing figures were a success for the BBC – it was the first time that all 10 most watched Christmas Day shows were screened on BBC One.

Despite well-loved Coronation Street character Gail Platt bidding farewell after 50 years, the ITV soap failed to make the top 10, attracting 2.41 million viewers in the overnight ratings.

However, the programme had been released on ITVX for viewers who wanted to watch the episode earlier in the day, which is likely to have impacted numbers.

BBC soap EastEnders split its Christmas Day into two episodes, recording more than 8 million viewers and reaching fifth and eighth in the ratings list.

Perennial favourite Call the Midwife came in fourth place.

Doctor Who, Strictly Come Dancing’s festive edition, the animated film Tiddler and a special of the Weakest Link also featured in the top 10.
