  • Manchester City: Fire engulfs kiosk at Etihad Stadium before Champions League tie

A fire engulfed a merchandise stand outside Etihad Stadium as fans gathered two hours before Manchester City’s Champions League home game against Club Brugge on Wednesday.

The fire started in the kiosk near the stadium’s main entrance just before 18:00 GMT as fans gathered for a presentation of the club’s January signings on a stage.

The event was halted and the area evacuated by stewards and security staff before the fire service arrived and quickly extinguished the blaze near the entrance to the Colin Bell West Stand.

City posted on X at 7.11pm that the match would kick-off at 8pm as originally scheduled, all entrances to the stadium were open and fans could move around as usual.

Reigning Premier League champions City need to win the match to reach the competition’s play-off round.

In a statement released just after 18:30, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said its firefighters were still at the scene and are “currently dampening down any hotspots and making the area safe”.

The presentation had already started when the fire broke out, with women’s players Rebecca Knaak and Aemu Oyama on stage at the time.

Men’s players Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov were set to follow them.

City cancelled the welcome event for the new signings and the first-team arrival, but the players were later pictured arriving at the stadium.

Manchester City fans were left shocked as a fire engulfed a kiosk at the Etihad Stadium just hours before their Champions League tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

The blaze broke out in a food kiosk in the South Stand of the stadium, with thick black smoke billowing out and flames licking the ceiling. Firefighters were quickly on the scene to tackle the fire, bringing it under control within minutes.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported and the match was able to go ahead as planned. The cause of the fire is still unknown, but investigations are underway.

Manchester City fans took to social media to express their shock and relief that no one was hurt in the incident. The club has also released a statement thanking the emergency services for their swift response.

It was certainly a dramatic start to the evening, but ultimately, the show went on and City emerged victorious in a thrilling 4-1 win over PSG.

  • Coldplay Breaks Record for Largest-Ever Stadium Shows of the 21st Century

Coldplay now holds the record for the largest-ever stadium shows of the 21st century following a two-night stint at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in India, according to Live Nation. The shows also marked the first time Coldplay has played in the country.

Over the weekend (Jan. 25-26), the British band performed for 111,581 fans at the first show and 111,989 fans per night at the second, totaling more than 223,000 fans across the two nights.

    More from Billboard

This narrowly beats the record set by George Strait, who in June played to 110,905 fans at Kyle Field at Texas A&M. Strait’s show will retain the record for the largest U.S. stadium concert.

Coldplay’s India dates are part of the band’s global Music of the Spheres World Tour that kicked off in March 2022. According to figures reported to Billboard Boxscore, the global trek has sold more tickets than any tour in history, at 10.3 million as of December. Already in January, Coldplay has played four nights at Zayed Sports City Stadium in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; three nights at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbia, India; and the two Narendra Modi Stadium shows last weekend.

The Music of the Spheres World Tour has been a global event, selling out stadiums on five continents. About half of the tour’s 175 concerts have been in Europe, where it sold 5.2 million tickets over 87 shows. It also sold 1.8 million tickets in South America, 1.6 million in North America, 884,000 in Asia and 848,000 in Australia. As of mid-December, Coldplay had sold more than 100,000 tickets on over half the stops on the tour and grossed a total of $1.14 billion.

The Music of the Spheres World Tour will pick up in April with shows in Hong Kong, China and Seoul before heading back to the United States and Canada. The tour is currently scheduled to close out with 10 sold-out nights at Wembley Stadium in London.

  • White Stadium opposition laid bare at 9 hour Boston hearing

Just five voiced support for the project.

“Boston students deserve a renovated White Stadium – they deserve a public White Stadium, not a private sports and entertainment complex built to enable private profits,” said Jean McGuire, resident of Roxbury and longtime civil rights advocate. “It’s clear that this entire process is being driven by the needs of private investments, not the needs of Boston students. The process has been launched, the state reviews having been conducted, and community members’ concerns about public access and transportation impacts are being ignored, all in a mad rush to next March for White Stadium in order to be a soccer team’s desired opening day.”

Sharon Berke, of Jamaica Plain, leaves Boston City Hall after attending the hearing in the Council Chamber, by those opposed to the demolition and rebuilding of White Stadium, in Franklin Park.Pat Greenhouse/Globe Staff

In addition to committee chair Julia Mejia, the other councilors there for the duration were District 6 Councilor Ben Weber, whose district abuts Franklin Park, and At-Large Councilor Erin Murphy and District 2 Councilor Ed Flynn. Both Flynn and Murphy have voiced their support for at least pausing the demolition in the interests of the council getting, in part, a better handle on the project’s costs.

In response to a question, Dion Irish, the city’s chief operating officer, upped the city’s share of the project from the $91 million that had emerged last month to “roughly $100 million.”

The soccer team’s share remains unknown, except that it will exceed the city’s share, which elevates the total cost above $200 million.

The meeting was split into two parts, with the morning and early afternoon devoted to discussions of finances and facilities, including the Madison Park high school renovation, and the latter session devoted to community engagement.

Mejia, a councilor at-large, said she would file a resolution for councilors to be polled on their support or lack of support for both White Stadium and Madison Park at the next City Council meeting on Jan. 29.

Diana Fernandez Bibeau, the deputy chief of urban design for the city, pushed back on the notion that the community was not part of the process.

“Our work without a doubt has been impacted by the community feedback that we’ve received today,” said Fernandez Bibeau. “I certainly understand that there is reservation of a particular type of partnership being able to sort of deliver on this project, but we have responded, and we have tried to sort of meet the community where they are in terms of where they are, in terms of where those concerns are, and try to address them every step of the way.

“I also want you to know that it’s hard to do this right, that it’s the reason why no other mayor has taken on the renovation of White Stadium, why no other administrations have taken on the hard work to go ahead and make an improvement at White Stadium and deliver on this promise for historically disinvested communities.”

Councilor Julia Mejia runs the hearing in the Boston City Council Chamber, in City Hall, by those opposed to the demolition and rebuilding of White Stadium.Pat Greenhouse/Globe Staff

Also on hand for portions of the meeting were District 7 Councilor Tania Fernandes Anderson, whose district encompasses Franklin Park and District 4 Councilor Brian Worrell, whose district also abuts the park. Also in attendance for portions of the meeting were Councilors John Fitzgerald, Enrique Pepén, Sharon Durkan, and Henry Santana.

Anderson expressed concern with the degree of engagement from the city with citizens.

“The administration should have told the community what planning and engagement would look like,” said Anderson. “We have not done enough to engage the community.”

Weber said he has heard both support and opposition for the plan from his constituents. He found it “disturbing” to hear that there has not been a community process. As for opponents like the Emerald Necklace Conservancy, who have filed a lawsuit that will go to trial in March, he said, “I hear a lot of rhetoric, I don’t hear much about solutions.”

“Some of the rhetoric around the opposition is not tied to the facts, and I wish that it was more tied to the facts, I think we could have a more constructive conversation,” Weber said.

A Bobcat was part of the activity at Franklin Park’s White Stadium that is slated for demolition and reconstruction.Jonathan Wiggs/Globe Staff

Stevan Kirschbaum, a former BPS bus driver, described the White Stadium plan as “appalling and criminal.”

“We should be chaining ourselves to those trees – this is a criminal rush to judgment.”

Ann Walsh, a Dorchester resident, expressed the belief that the presence of the women’s professional team would be an inspiration to BPS student-athletes.

“My expectation is that a professional women’s soccer team is going to be a good commercial partner like the Red Sox are and offer mentorship and internships.”

Michael Silverman can be reached at michael.silverman@globe.com.

In a marathon 9-hour public hearing in Boston, opposition to the proposed White Stadium project was laid bare as community members and activists voiced their concerns about the potential impact on the neighborhood.

The proposed project, which includes the renovation and expansion of White Stadium in Franklin Park, has been met with backlash from residents who fear gentrification, increased traffic, and the displacement of low-income residents.

During the hearing, community members spoke out against the project, citing concerns about the lack of affordable housing, the potential for increased noise and pollution, and the overall impact on the character of the neighborhood.

Activists also raised issues about the lack of transparency in the planning process and questioned the motives behind the project, which they believe is more about catering to wealthier residents than serving the needs of the community.

Despite the opposition, proponents of the project argue that the renovation of White Stadium will bring much-needed improvements to the area and provide increased recreational opportunities for residents.

As the debate continues, it is clear that the future of the White Stadium project remains uncertain, with both sides steadfast in their beliefs and determined to fight for what they believe is best for the community.

  • Boston taxpayer tab for controversial White Stadium rehab grows again to $100M

Boston taxpayers are now expected to fork over $100 million as part of the city’s public-private plan to rehab White Stadium to house a pro soccer team, the latest cost increase to be revealed in a project that continues to draw strong opposition.

The city’s half of the project, which swelled from $50 million to $91 million late last year, has grown again, to “roughly $100 million,” Dion Irish, Boston’s chief of operations, testified at a Wednesday City Council hearing that was held days after demolition work began at the 75-year-old stadium in Franklin Park.

While Irish said the city’s goal was to keep its taxpayer-funded portion of the project to that latest estimate, he wouldn’t rule out further cost overruns. He pointed to a public bidding process for construction that may change the final cost. Final bids for a new fire station in the Seaport, for example, tacked on a few million dollars to that project, he said.

“I would not venture to say a lot more money,” Irish said, when City Councilor Erin Murphy posited that the Wu administration “may choose to spend a lot more money” to fulfill its commitment to the tear-down and rebuild project.

Murphy, prior to making that statement, asked whether the city administration had determined a limit for what it was willing to spend on the project, and if there was an amount that would cause it to walk away from the public-private partnership with Boston Unity Soccer Partners, which owns the new pro women’s team.

“We have now said we can come up with $100 million,” Murphy said. “Just like any responsible person, anyone who runs their home budget, at some point you have to say, that’s great but I can’t afford it, so I’m going to have to say no.”

Murphy last week called for the city to halt demolition, and Councilor Ed Flynn has called for the project’s cancellation.

Mayor Michelle Wu drew criticism last month for saying that the city was committed to paying for its half of the project, “no matter what it costs” to taxpayers, after the city’s tab ballooned to $91 million.

Boston Unity, an all-female ownership group that includes Boston Globe CEO Linda Pizzuti Henry as an investor, will now pay more than $100 million, pushing the cost of the project, initially estimated at $100 million, to more than $200 million, Wu administration officials said at the day’s hearing.

The city’s new cost for White Stadium’s rehab appeared to catch councilors and community members off-guard. The revelation drew immediate criticism from opponents, including the plaintiffs in a lawsuit that seeks to stop the project over claims that the city and Boston Unity are illegally privatizing public trust land.

Irish denied privatization, saying that the new stadium would be owned by the city and Boston Public Schools, which would share use with the new soccer team, a tenant subject to a 10-year lease agreement. Critics say, however, that BPS football teams would be displaced for much of their season.

“Boston taxpayers are being asked to pay through the nose to build an oversized professional sports complex for the benefit of a few millionaire sports investors,” Jean McGuire, a 93-year-old community activist and former School Committee member, said. “The fact is, we were never asked if we wanted a professional sports and entertainment complex in our park.

“Community members’ concerns about public access, transportation impacts and countless other issues are being ignored, all in a mad rush to demolish White Stadium in order to meet the soccer stadium’s desired opening date,” she added.

The new National Women’s Soccer League team is expected to take the pitch in spring 2026 — leading to questions at the day’s hearing about whether the tight deadline may lead to further cost overruns.

An updated project timeline presented by Wu officials at the hearing shows demolition work, which began this week, is set to continue for the next two months. Construction would take place for the rest of this year and continue into 2026. The NWSL schedule typically begins in March.

Further complicating matters for the team, as mentioned in a November court filing by Boston Unity following the plaintiffs’ push to move back the March 18 trial date — which was denied by a Suffolk Superior Court judge — are the delays to construction brought on by the pending lawsuit.

“Clearly this is a transparent ploy by the plaintiffs to ‘delay, delay, delay,’ — a tactic, which if sanctioned by this court, they know would be fatal to the singular element required for Defendant BUSP to bring a professional women’s soccer team to Boston — a constructed and operational White Stadium at the start of 2026,” the investors said.

The tight turnaround led to questions from Councilor Brian Worrell around whether the city had a contingency plan in place should the team back out, to finish construction.

Should the deal fall apart after work has already started, Diana Fernandez Bibeau, Boston’s deputy chief of urban design, said the city would be able to pull from an escrow account and put those funds toward construction activity.

Boston, per legal agreements, has a corporate guarantee of $45 million to cover stadium expenses, if the team chooses to “walk away,” Fernandez Bibeau said.

Worrell also asked whether the city was equipped to cover annual maintenance expenses, should the new women’s pro team fold within 10 years. The team contributes $2 million annually for maintenance, per the terms of the lease.

The Boston taxpayer tab for the controversial White Stadium rehabilitation project has once again grown, now reaching a staggering $100 million. This comes as a shock to many residents who were already concerned about the rising costs of the project.

Originally estimated to cost around $50 million, the project has faced numerous setbacks and delays, leading to the ballooning budget. Critics have pointed to mismanagement and poor planning as contributing factors to the cost overruns.

Despite the high price tag, city officials are standing by the project, citing the importance of preserving the historic stadium and providing a modern facility for the community. However, many taxpayers are questioning whether the hefty bill is worth it.

As the debate over the White Stadium project continues, one thing is clear – the burden on Boston taxpayers is only growing. Stay tuned for more updates on this controversial and costly endeavor.
