The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills have established a strong rivalry atop the AFC, as quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen continue to dominate the sport. For the fourth time in five years—and second time in the AFC championship game—the two sides meet in the playoffs this Sunday.
We’ll take a look at everything fans need to know for Sunday’s AFC championship game, including how to watch the game, when the game is, and what’s at stake for each team.
The Chiefs are already the defining franchise of the post-Tom Brady NFL, with three Super Bowl wins since 2019. Kansas City has already stamped its place in league history, but Mahomes & Co. can surpass the pace of Brady’s Patriots with a fourth title. After winning three Super Bowls in four years from 2002 to ’05, New England had to wait another decade before starting its second three Super Bowl run.
The Chiefs can also do something that no NFL dynasty has ever done: a three-peat. K.C. opened the playoffs with a 23–14 win over the Houston Texans last week, with Travis Kelce once again turning on his Hall of Fame form in the postseason.
Meanwhile, Sunday’s game gives the Bills a chance to overcome what has been a Sisyphean task: beating the Chiefs in the playoffs. The Chiefs won the 2021 AFC championship in Kansas City 38–24 and broke the hearts of Bills fans in the divisional round in Jan. 2022, again at Arrowhead Stadium. Allen threw a go-ahead touchdown to Gabe Davis with just 13 seconds remaining in the game, but that was 13 seconds too many, as Mahomes somehow drove the Chiefs into field goal range, allowing Harrison Butker to tie the game before winning in overtime, 42–36. The two sides played yet another classic divisional game, this time in Buffalo, last January, with Kansas City pulling out a 27–24 win.
To add insult to injury, the Bills are an impressive 4–1 against the Chiefs during the Allen-Mahomes era, but are still looking for their first postseason win. A victory on Sunday would earn Buffalo its first trip to the Super Bowl since the 1993–94 season.
The Bills won the regular season matchup between the two teams, a home game on Nov. 17, 30–21.
The divisional round matchup from Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo. will be played on Sunday, Jan. 26. The game can be watched on CBS and streamed on Paramount+. Other subscription streaming options for the game include Fubo, Sling, YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV.
Sunday’s AFC championship kicks off at 6:30 p.m. ET, after the NFC championship airs on Fox. Here’s a look at when kickoff is in each time zone.

R.F.K. Jr. Would Keep Stake in HPV Vaccine Suit if Confirmed
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Trump’s pick to be health secretary, is keeping his financial stake in major litigation against Merck over a widely used vaccine given to young people, according to an ethics agreement made public on Wednesday and court documents. That conflict of interest could raise questions for lawmakers as Mr. Kennedy aims to run agencies that regulate the drugmaker.
The ethics document said Mr. Kennedy would continue to collect fees for cases in which he referred clients to Wisner Baum, a law firm suing Merck over Gardasil, a vaccine that protects against the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The vaccine is administered to adolescents to prevent cervical and other cancers later in life.
The arrangement with Wisner Baum, which also includes other matters, has earned Mr. Kennedy, one of the nation’s fiercest vaccine critics, more than $2.5 million in the past two years, according to records filed with federal election officials for his presidential run and the agreement, approved by the Office of Government Ethics as part of the confirmation process. That sum is far higher than about $200,000, the latest salary figure for the health and human services secretary, according to a former agency spokesman.
“I am entitled to receive 10 percent of fees awarded in contingency fee cases referred to the firm,” Mr. Kennedy said in the ethics filing. He wrote that he is not a lawyer in any of the cases.
The agreement says Mr. Kennedy may retain a contingency fee interest in cases that the ethics office of the Department of Health and Human Services determines do not involve the federal government. He will divest his interest in cases that do, such as those brought through the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program.
Mr. Kennedy has railed against what he deems corruption and conflicts of interest in government and the pharmaceutical industry. He has vowed to root out what he calls “regulatory capture” — the close ties between industry and government, especially drugmakers and the Food and Drug Administration.
The ethics filings clear the way for the Senate Health Committee and the Finance Committee to schedule confirmation hearings for Mr. Kennedy. After their release, Senator Michael D. Crapo, Republican of Idaho and the Finance Committee chairman, set a hearing for Mr. Kennedy next Wednesday.
But the disclosures could also complicate Mr. Kennedy’s prospects. Two influential Republicans, Senators Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, have expressed concerns about Mr. Kennedy’s views on vaccines. Mr. McConnell is the former Republican leader; Mr. Cassidy, a doctor, is the chairman of the Health Committee.
One Democratic member of the Finance Committee, Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, said Mr. Kennedy’s finances showed “outrageous conflicts of interest that endanger public health.”
“This disclosure shows that R.F.K. Jr. made millions off of peddling dangerous anti-vaccine conspiracies,” she said in a statement. “Even worse, if he is confirmed, his finances will still be tied to the outcomes of anti-vaccine lawsuits — even as he’d be tasked with regulating them as health secretary.”
Two ethics experts who reviewed the agreement said his stake in the lawsuits appeared to be highly problematic, as the F.D.A., which approves drugs and vaccines, would fall within Mr. Kennedy’s purview as health secretary. The experts said any action Mr. Kennedy took related to Merck, one of the world’s largest drugmakers, could appear to be motivated by his financial interest in a handsome settlement.
“I think he’d have to recuse a huge amount to not appear to be extracting money from Merck,” said Richard W. Painter, a University of Minnesota law professor and former chief White House ethics lawyer. “And it almost looks like extortion.”
A spokeswoman for Mr. Kennedy declined to comment.
The first of many lawsuits claiming that young people were harmed by the HPV vaccine is on trial in Los Angeles Superior Court. Mr. Kennedy has used social media to promote the claims; in 2022 he posted a video to recruit additional plaintiffs. Merck said the allegations have no merit.
Wisner Baum paid Mr. Kennedy about $856,000 in 2024 and $1.6 million the year before, financial records filed with the government show. It was not clear from the records how much of that money came from cases involving Merck. Mr. Kennedy has also worked with Wisner Baum on other litigation, including cases related to the herbicide Roundup.
Agreements like the one submitted by Mr. Kennedy and signed by the Office of Government Ethics are based on criminal laws that prevent federal officials from self-dealing and regulations guarding against the appearance of conflicts of interest.
Wisner Baum is not the only law firm that has received client referrals from Mr. Kennedy. He has had a similar arrangement with Morgan & Morgan, which advertises itself as “America’s Largest Injury Law Firm.”
The firm recently sued some of the nation’s largest food manufacturers, accusing them of using a “cigarette playbook to fill our food environment with addictive substances that are aggressively marketed to children and minorities” — language that echoes Mr. Kennedy’s assault on ultraprocessed foods.
Mr. Kennedy does not appear to be involved in that suit and said in the ethics agreement that he would terminate that referral agreement upon confirmation. He also pledged that, if confirmed, he would end his consulting agreement with his book publisher, Skyhorse Publishing, and divest his interests in a number of companies, including Apple, Amazon and two biotech firms, CRISPR Therapeutics and Dragonfly Therapeutics.
The document outlining what Mr. Kennedy’s obligations would be is not clear on the degree to which he would need to sidestep matters related to Merck or the Gardasil vaccine, Mr. Painter, the ethics expert, said.
Mr. Painter said he believed that senators should decline to confirm Mr. Kennedy until he resolves the matter.
Virginia Canter, the chief counsel for the watchdog group State Democracy Defenders Action and a former government ethics lawyer, also reviewed the ethics statement and said Mr. Kennedy did not appear to be walled off from Merck’s business unless there was a subsequent decision by agency ethics officials. Merck makes a number of vaccines as well as Keytruda, the blockbuster cancer drug.
Ms. Canter said ethics guidelines include an impartiality rule that prompts officials to consider the appearance of bias in their actions. Given Mr. Kennedy’s potential profit, “how could he be impartial?” she asked.
Gardasil lawsuits that Mr. Kennedy worked on claim that young people developed postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, known as POTS, and premature ovarian failure as side effects of the vaccine.
Mr. Kennedy was a leader in organizing large law firms to get involved in the Gardasil cases, according to a report by Reuters. The cases also allege that Merck’s early studies of the vaccine “were designed in a manner to obfuscate and conceal the identification of serious injuries, including injuries with a delayed onset,” court records show.
Robert Josephson, a spokesman for Merck, noted that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website says the agency “has not detected any safety concerns related to POTS following HPV vaccination.”
“An overwhelming body of scientific evidence, including more than 20 years of research and development, continues to support the safety and efficacy profiles of our HPV vaccines,” Mr. Josephson said.
A study done in Scotland found that adolescents who got the HPV vaccine before they were 14 were found to have no cases of cervical cancer as adults in their late 20s to mid-30s, when 15 to 17 cases would be expected in the group.
Mr. Kennedy is likely to face a flurry of questions from lawmakers during confirmation hearings, including over his opposition to vaccines, which include a petition to revoke approval of all Covid shots during a deadly phase of the pandemic.
He has faced opposition from abortion foes who underscore his nearly lifelong affiliation with the Democratic Party. He has also made a dizzying number of claims over the years, including that the polio vaccine was more deadly than the disease.
Susanne Craig contributed reporting.
In a recent development, it has been revealed that Robert F. Kennedy Jr. would maintain his stake in a lawsuit against the makers of the HPV vaccine if he is confirmed to lead the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).Kennedy, a prominent anti-vaccine activist, has been a vocal critic of the HPV vaccine, claiming it is unsafe and ineffective. He has filed a lawsuit against the manufacturers of the vaccine, alleging that they have engaged in fraud and deception in promoting the vaccine.
If confirmed as the head of the FDA, Kennedy has stated that he would recuse himself from any decisions related to the HPV vaccine and other vaccines that he has been involved in legal action against. However, he has made it clear that he would not divest from his stake in the lawsuit.
This news has raised concerns among public health experts, who fear that Kennedy’s personal beliefs and financial interests could influence his decisions as head of the FDA. They argue that it is essential for the head of the FDA to be impartial and objective in evaluating the safety and efficacy of vaccines.
As the confirmation process for Kennedy continues, it remains to be seen how this issue will be addressed and what impact it may have on public health policy in the future.

#R.F.K #Stake #HPV #Vaccine #Suit #ConfirmedWith Trump digital coins, billions of dollars — and crypto’s credibility — are at stake
The creation of billions of dollars of digital wealth for the Trump Organization started with a social media post Friday.
At 9:44 p.m. ET, the then-president-elect announced the creation of a new digital token: $TRUMP.
“My NEW Official Trump Meme is HERE! It’s time to celebrate everything we stand for: WINNING!” Donald Trump’s X account posted. “Join my very special Trump Community. GET YOUR $TRUMP NOW. Go to http://gettrumpmemes.com — Have Fun!”
The announcement came with little fanfare. But what would ensue in the coming days — including wild price swings and Melania Trump’s own digital token — would roil the crypto community, including some Trump supporters, just as he was set to return to the Oval Office.
The $TRUMP and $MELANIA tokens, as they’re referred to on social media, belong to the crypto category known as memecoins — digital assets that use blockchain technology similar to bitcoin.
Because there is no asset like underlying cash flows backing memecoins like $TRUMP and $MELANIA, anyone who owns them will only make money if they sell them at a higher price than at which they bought them.
That includes the coin creators — and Trump and his family — themselves.
Though long a part of the crypto universe, memecoins have in recent months enjoyed a resurgence after Trump emerged victorious in November and promised to embrace blockchain technology and crypto markets.
In the case of $TRUMP and $MELANIA, the coins were launched on Solana, a blockchain that collects fees to process transactions and is known for faster throughput, meaning it is less prone to seizing up when transaction volumes are high. It is not clear who knew about their launch before it occurred aside from the coins’ developers and the Trump Organization.
The slew of recent memecoin launches have triggered fresh skepticism and warnings about scams due to the freewheeling nature of memecoins. Because they are not formal investment vehicles, they are almost entirely unregulated, and anybody can start one under any name at any time, often for free. Platforms like CoinMarketCap that track digital tokens showed dozens of duplicate TRUMP coins.
Bloomberg News summarized memecoin sales as “the crystallization of ‘greater fool’ investing, of an asset that’s only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it at a given moment in time.”
“I’m not sure people quite grasp how much of the crypto world is reacting to the Trump memecoin launches,” Molly White, a software engineer and cryptocurrency chronicler, posted on X alongside screenshots from reactions that ranged from frustration to anger.
White later told NBC News that the launch of the coins seemed to dash hopes from some that Trump would help further legitimize the crypto industry.
“There’s now a fear that people who are not super familiar with this industry will see it as a cash grab and not see all the good uses of crypto that exist,” she said. “They worry this will give crypto a bad name.”
Part of that frustration centered on Trump’s recent emergence as a champion for all things crypto. During his 2024 presidential campaign, Trump made clear his support for crypto, speaking at the annual Bitcoin Conference and pledging to consider creating a “strategic bitcoin reserve” that would see the U.S. purchase billions’ worth of the cryptocurrency in a bid to encourage price support and adoption. Trump has also launched a line of NFTs, and his family launched a crypto banking platform last year.
And Trump’s memecoin looked poised to be a major success, at least at first. The price of $TRUMP took off almost immediately, and by Saturday morning a single coin was trading at $75 — a 650% rise, at least, from its Friday launch price. Crypto enthusiasts who track transactions — many blockchains, including the one used by $TRUMP, are public-facing — reported some holders who had bought in early holding millions of dollars’ worth of the token.
A Trump transition team spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The $TRUMP surge suddenly reversed when another coin came on the scene — from Trump’s own spouse.
On Sunday afternoon, Melania Trump’s X account posted that her $MELANIA memecoin was live. Donald Trump’s X account reposted that message.
The price of $TRUMP immediately plunged upon $MELANIA’s appearance, with some suggesting demand for one would eat into interest in the other.
“$MELANIA coin is being viewed as a competitor against $TRUMP coin,” market commentary group The Kobeissi Letter wrote on X. “This has resulted in a sharp drop in demand for $TRUMP.”
Later Sunday, a $BARRON coin also started to trade, further adding to the market concerns. However, $BARRON’s connection, if any, to Trump’s youngest son, Barron, or the Trump family was not clear. No official Trump social media accounts have posted about it.
As the price of $TRUMP began falling, backlash ensued.
“Dear @realDonaldTrump : Please fire whoever recommended going forward with the Melania launch today,” Ryan Selkis, a longtime crypto advocate and political conservative, wrote on X on Sunday as the price of $TRUMP began to fall. “1. They don’t know what they’re doing. 2. They cost you a lot of $ and goodwill. 3. They don’t have your interests in mind.”
By Tuesday, the price of $TRUMP had not recovered from the decline. Still, shortly after Trump’s swearing-in, the combined holdings among the Trump- and Melania-related corporations that launched the coins were worth tens of billions, at least on paper, according to crypto news website CoinDesk — and possibly worth more.
Because all holders’ wallets, including those of Trump and the coin’s creators, are visible on the blockchain, any transactions they’re involved in will be closely watched. And a large sell-off from those wallets would likely trigger a major price fall, according to Ari Redbord, head of legal and government affairs at TRM Labs, a firm that monitors crypto projects.
But Redbord said Trump’s celebrity adds a factor that’s worth watching.
“Obviously Trump, because of who he is, elevates a memecoin launch like nothing we’ve ever seen before,” he said.
Trump has released a voluntary ethics document designed to limit private financial interests from shaping his official policy agenda.
But the president’s involvement in the crypto project also raises questions over potential use by illicit actors or foreign governments, Redbord said.
Consumers need to realize that there are “far fewer” protections with memecoins than traditional stocks, he said.
“It’s highly volatile,” Redbord added, saying “consumers really need to understand what they’re investing in, because you’re going to lose big and you could potentially win big.”
Mark Cuban, a technology investor and ardent Trump critic who has also been involved in crypto, warned on X that the Trumps’ direct foray into the industry would usher in a new era of fraudulent activity, with unsavvy investors the victims.
“Hello every scam targeted at everyone and anyone who has no clue about crypto,” Cuban said on X on Monday about the coins. “Good bye whatever hope the crypto industry had of legitimizing itself.”
With Trump digital coins, billions of dollars — and crypto’s credibility — are at stakeFormer president Donald Trump’s foray into the world of digital coins has sparked both excitement and concern among investors and experts alike. The launch of “Trump coins” has the potential to attract billions of dollars in investment, but it also raises questions about the credibility of the cryptocurrency market.
On one hand, Trump’s brand has a massive following and could bring a wave of new investors into the crypto space. The coins are being marketed as a way to support Trump’s political initiatives and are backed by his personal reputation. This could lead to a surge in demand for the coins and drive up their value.
However, there are also concerns about the potential for fraud and manipulation. The cryptocurrency market is already rife with scams and pump-and-dump schemes, and Trump’s involvement could exacerbate these issues. There are also questions about the legitimacy of the coins and whether they have any real value beyond their association with Trump.
Overall, the launch of Trump digital coins represents a high-stakes gamble for both investors and the crypto community. The success or failure of these coins could have far-reaching implications for the future of digital currencies and their credibility in the wider financial world. Only time will tell whether Trump coins will be a game-changer or a cautionary tale in the world of cryptocurrency.

#Trump #digital #coins #billions #dollars #cryptos #credibility #stakeWhy FuboTV Stake Purchase Signals a Shift in Streaming Strategy – Market
In a significant move for the streaming landscape, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE: DIS) has announced its intention to acquire a 70% stake in FuboTV (NYSE: FUBO), a major player in the streaming television and cable-alternative space. While this partnership seems promising, there may be more beneath the surface of this deal than meets the eye.
Disney to Become Majority Shareholder in FuboTV
Disney’s decision to acquire a 70% stake in FuboTV is seen as a strategic shift, as it consolidates its position in the sports streaming market while still maintaining its existing services. Disney will not buy Fubo outright, but rather will purchase yet-to-be-issued stock over the next year and a half. Despite Disney’s dominance in the content creation sector, the deal will allow FuboTV to continue as a publicly traded company. For Disney, this provides an opportunity to gain control of a competitive streaming platform without fully committing to a costly acquisition.
Hulu+Live and FuboTV: A Sports-Centric Streaming Merge
The most notable aspect of the deal is Disney’s integration of its Hulu+Live service into FuboTV, effectively merging two significant streaming services focused on live television. Although Hulu+Live boasts 4.6 million subscribers, FuboTV’s smaller customer base of 1.6 million will now benefit from a combination of both platforms’ capabilities. For FuboTV, this merger brings new growth potential, especially considering the 250% stock price jump Fubo experienced following the announcement.
However, while the merger will provide synergies in sports streaming, it also raises questions about Disney’s long-term vision for the cable television business, particularly as both companies face increasing headwinds from rising costs and new competitors in the streaming space.
Disney’s Shift Away from Cable Television
Despite the immediate benefits, this deal may signal Disney’s broader strategy to move away from traditional cable TV models. Disney’s acquisition of FuboTV aligns with its plan to focus on content creation while avoiding the operational challenges of the cable industry. With rising carriage fees and the looming prospect of stricter regulations, Disney may prefer to monetize content directly to consumers, bypassing traditional cable altogether.
Disney is also laying the groundwork for its Venu platform, a sports-focused streaming service that will include live sports broadcasts from Fox Sports, Warner’s TNT and TBS, and ESPN. This new venture aligns perfectly with Disney’s future plans, which may ultimately lead to a full departure from cable-like services.
FuboTV’s Potential as a Profitable Cable-Alternative
FuboTV’s integration of Hulu+Live will provide a more profitable structure, merging two similar businesses under one umbrella. However, there are concerns that the cable business model—even in its streaming form—may be nearing its peak. Rising competition and the expansion of live sports streaming options are challenging traditional cable providers and newer streaming services alike. Despite this, the move could still prove beneficial for Fubo, given Disney’s decision to let FuboTV’s management team continue running the company.
The Future of Streaming Sports and the Changing Media Landscape
Disney’s decision to partner with FuboTV comes at a time when sports streaming is poised for significant disruption. With Amazon Prime securing exclusive rights to Thursday Night NFL games and Netflix entering the live sports arena, traditional cable providers face mounting pressure. As Disney prepares to launch its standalone ESPN service, it is positioning itself to capture the growing demand for live sports content, while potentially leaving traditional cable services behind.
Moreover, the launch of the Venu platform, which will include live broadcasts from major sports networks like Fox, Warner, and ESPN, will further accelerate the move away from traditional TV.
Strategic Shifts for Disney and FuboTV’s Future
For Disney, this agreement is cost-effective, providing it with an easy exit strategy if it decides to offload its stake in FuboTV. Given the relatively small market cap of FuboTV—currently less than $2 billion—Disney could sell its stake at a loss at any point in the future without significant financial repercussions.
Investing Implications for Disney and FuboTV
The market’s reaction to this deal was immediate and positive for FuboTV, with its stock surging by 250%. However, as the deal progresses, there are still questions about how Fubo’s stock will behave, especially given the timing of Disney’s stake purchase. With Disney set to buy FuboTV stock in the near future, there’s no guarantee that Fubo’s stock price will hold steady at current levels.
For Walt Disney, this agreement strengthens its position in the streaming industry while opening doors for future monetization opportunities. If the company decides to exit the cable streaming market entirely, it will have positioned itself for an easier exit.
The Bottom Line
As FuboTV and Disney move forward with their collaboration, industry watchers will be keeping a close eye on how this deal reshapes the competitive landscape of live sports streaming. The key takeaway: this is more than just an acquisition—it’s a pivot for Disney, signaling a shift away from traditional cable models and towards direct-to-consumer content delivery.
For investors, both companies present intriguing opportunities, but the coming months will reveal whether Fubo’s stock can maintain its post-announcement gains, or whether Disney will decide to adjust its stake in the long run.
The recent stake purchase by FuboTV in a major streaming service marks a significant shift in the streaming industry’s strategy. Women’s college basketball Bracket Watch: What’s at stake when USC plays Indiana?
Editor’s note: This article is part of the Bracket Central series, an inside look at the run-up to the men’s & women’s NCAA Tournaments, along with analysis and picks during the tournaments.
The 2024-25 college season continues to provide absolute gems of chaos and enjoyment. Only three Division I teams remain undefeated, and seven have just one loss. That handful could dwindle even further before the weekend’s over.
These upcoming games might make up the most impactful slate until conference tournaments. Every game matters, but for snagging some marquee victories, a plethora of opportunities exist in power conferences for seed line maneuvering.
Some pivotal games to watch this week (all games ET):
• Utah at TCU, 7:30 p.m. Friday
• USC at Indiana, noon Sunday
• Seton Hall at Connecticut, 1 p.m. Sunday
• Ole Miss at Mississippi State, 3 p.m. Sunday
• Tennessee at Vanderbilt, 3 p.m. Sunday
• Oklahoma at South Carolina, 3 p.m. SundayAs we discussed last week, the Big 12 has the potential to earn a No. 1 seed, but TCU and Kansas State likely will need few losses in league play. Utah, however, has the potential to play spoiler and work into an eventual hosting position if it can snag a win against TCU. The Utes don’t face the Horned Frogs or Wildcats again in the regular season, so unless they want to put their fate in the hands of Big 12 tournament results, adding another resume win here would be massive.

Indiana’s loss at Butler early in the season has significantly impacted the Hoosiers’ NET ranking, rated as a Quad 3 loss. Though the actual equation isn’t publicly available, by tracking the tables, it’s clear a “bad loss” can damage a team’s tournament resume. Indiana still has a path for hosting, but beating one of the Big Ten’s top four teams will be a must, and the Hoosiers have a huge opportunity when USC comes to Assembly Hall.
Seton Hall hasn’t made the NCAA Tournament since 2016, but it’s crept into the picture with a strong start to Big East play. Though I wouldn’t expect a win over UConn, keeping this game close could go a long way toward impressing the selection committee. The Pirates played USC tight for much of their early-season meeting before the Trojans ran away with it. Margin of victory plays an integral part in NET rankings, and it’s a subjective aspect of how committee members might value competitiveness in games.
This weekend is also massive for the SEC, with a late afternoon on Sunday loaded with high-quality games. Eight SEC teams rank in the NET’s top 20, with a ninth team (Vanderbilt) just outside that group (before Thursday’s games). The biggest thing I’ll be looking to see is whether an SEC hierarchy gets established.
The 13th annual @WeBackPat Week is underway!
Each year, the @SEC and its schools honor the legacy of Pat Summitt while bringing awareness to the fight against Alzheimer’s disease: https://t.co/BJGyu4vVMm#WeBackPat x #ItJustMeansMore pic.twitter.com/5dHS0H5Iv6
— Southeastern Conference (@SEC) January 17, 2025
An argument could be made that this is the country’s strongest conference, but it will be interesting to see how the selection committee views a conference if it gets torn apart by attrition. There are a multitude of NCAA Tournament teams here, but how things shake out in the SEC for hosting in March will make this season a fun case study. Vanderbilt has faced an absolute gantlet to open conference play, and this will be its one shot at in-state rival Tennessee. Vanderbilt doesn’t have a “bad loss” on its resume, but picking up its first Quad 1 win of the season would be key.
Blind resume: Vying for a No. 2 seed
Let’s try a new game called “The Blind Resume Test,” looking at resumes without revealing the team.
Though shake-ups can still occur this season, we have a good idea of the top eight teams that will occupy the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds. However, the rest of the hosting teams are a bit up in the air. It’s been jarring to see the amount of variability from teams that grade out in the top five as opposed to in the mid-30s. NET ranking doesn’t encapsulate everything, but it gives us a fun jumping-off point to dissect teams. Let’s get into it and look at teams that look similar on the surface but have big discrepancies in my bracket.

Quad 2

What stands out most? The sheer difference between strength of schedule, and that the two teams with the lowest strength of schedule rank significantly higher in the NET, which is why I wanted to dive into this.
Teams B and D have the best victories by far, and Team C doesn’t have a Quad 1 or 2 win. Why is there such a sizable difference in NET despite how much stronger the schedule and victories have been for Teams B and D? What does that mean?
Margin of victory is extremely significant. Teams A and C have dominated the field with respect to the margins. Team A’s only loss was a close game on a neutral floor to Duke, which is projected as a No. 3 seed. Team A has won every other game by double digits. Fourteen of those wins have been by 20 points or more, including its lone Quad 1 victory in a commanding performance at Utah. If you haven’t guessed it yet, Team A is Kansas State.
All of Team C’s losses were by single digits, with two of those to top-30 NET teams (Texas and Oklahoma State). However, I have Team C at 20th on the seed list. The NET matters and is perhaps its strongest case for a higher ranking outside competitive losses, but until this team actually wins one of those games, it’s harder to envision it hosting. Ready to guess? That’s West Virginia.
Team B has better wins than West Virginia, beating Oklahoma and Utah. However, its NET dropped significantly due to 20-point losses to Kentucky and South Carolina. I wouldn’t consider those “bad losses” concerning its resume, but it matters greatly in the NET comparisons. Ultimately, I view these teams as fairly close from a tournament standpoint; West Virginia is not as high as the NET indicates, and Team B is not as low as it indicates. This team? Mississippi State.
I know what you’re thinking: “But Mark, who is Team D?”
I’ll spare the suspense. It’s Maryland!
The Terps have the best resume of the four teams, which is why they’re the highest No. 3 seed. Why is Maryland’s NET so low?
Margin of victory strikes again. Maryland’s lone loss was to projected No. 1 seed USC, which is the best kind of loss on a resume, and it was a tight game until the end.
However, Maryland has not been blowing out teams the way Kansas State and West Virginia have been, which causes the lower NET ranking. It’s important to note that coach Brenda Frese’s squad has played a significantly strong schedule, but winning close against a solid team (Quad 2 and 3) doesn’t do much to improve metrics.
From a pure basketball sense, the Terps need a full 40 minutes of competitiveness. If their recent win against Minnesota had ended at the 37-minute mark, when Maryland had a 20-point lead before allowing Minnesota a 20-6 run to cut it close, the Terps would’ve jumped quite a few spots in the NET. These things can be key in separating a deep pool of teams fighting to get on the Nos. 2 and 3 lines.
I have Maryland as the ninth-best team on the seed list because of what it has proved against some of the nation’s top teams, but it’s capable of placing higher. We’re going to learn a lot about the Terrapins as they enter perhaps the most brutal week of basketball anyone in the country faces, taking on Texas, Ohio State and UCLA in a six-day stretch.
Coretta Scott King Classic
Why not follow up a wild weekend of league play with a brand-new midseason nonconference doubleheader?
In case you forgot, the Coretta Scott King Classic was announced in September, and oh, hey, it’s already here. Nationally televised on Fox on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, UCLA will take on Baylor at 3 p.m. (ET), followed by Maryland and Texas at 5:30 p.m.
FOUR DAYS out from the inaugural #CorettaScottKingClassic at @PruCenter , as we witness a clash of women’s basketball powerhouses:

— 2025 Coretta Scott King Classic (@CSKClassic) January 16, 2025
This game has sizable implications for the NCAA Tournament. As we talked about with the Big 12 last week, it’s in an interesting spot as the “weakest” of the four power conferences. Baylor snagging a game against the No. 1 team in the country could open the door for more in the Big 12’s postseason.
The winner of Maryland-Texas could become the deciding factor in whether the other gets moved to a higher or lower seed line in March.
Mid-major check-in
• UTSA is 15-2 and 6-0 in American play after a nail-biter against Memphis. The Roadrunners haven’t made the NCAA Tournament or won 20 games since the 2008-9 season, and Karen Aston’s squad is primed to do both. This group is gritty defensively, and Jordyn Jenkins is one of the most well-rounded and efficient scorers in mid-major basketball. Watch UTSA take on UAB on Saturday.
• Purdue Fort Wayne recorded its first 20-win season in over a decade last season, which was coach Maria Marchesano’s third with the program. The Mastodons boast conference wins over typical Horizon League powers Green Bay and Cleveland State, and they also gave Kentucky a heck of a game in November. They have never been to the Big Dance, but that might change this year.
• There’s a five-way tie for first in the West Coast Conference, with each team at 5-2. New members Washington State and Oregon State immediately made an impact, but Portland, Gonzaga, San Francisco and St. Mary’s also showed their mettle early. The WCC is an absolute grind right now with no clear front-runner, but plenty of teams can win any given game. If you’re not tapped into WCC hoops on ESPN+, change that.

Group C Supremacy at Stake in Cairo
The titanic Group C finale between Orlando Pirates and Al Ahly arrives with quite a bit at stake, despite both sides’ success in securing spots in the CAF Champions League knockouts. They clash at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday, bringing an exciting end to the group stage.
The two African giants are separated by only a single point heading into the encounter with the Buccaneers leading the charge. Meanwhile, the chasing pack – in the form of Algeria’s CR Belouizdad and Ivorian outfit Stade d’Abidjan – is out of the race.
While the two crucial qualifying slots have been occupied with a game to spare, there is still more than enough motivation for each side to put on a determined effort on the final match day. First place is up for grabs with Pirates also going in with the added incentive of finishing the group stage unbeaten.
This has been echoed by defender Nkosinathi Sibisi, who has led the team out throughout this stage of the competition.
“The team is highly motivated when we go into a game against Al Ahly,” he told orlandopiratesfc.com. “We want to finish the group unbeaten and we’d like to finish at the top of our group. I think that’s our main objective. We’re aiming to get a positive result here in Cairo.”
As one of South Africa’s two representatives in the tournament, the Buccaneers are also the source of national pride. Sibisi believes a positive result against the defending champions, who began the campaign as group favourites, will hold great significance.
“Our main concern is getting a positive result here and hopefully, it will be good enough to finish the group unbeaten,” he said. “That’s our focus and we want to represent our country and make our country proud.”
The highly-anticipated fixture kicks off at 18:00 and will be televised live on SuperSport Variety 54 (209) and SABC 2.
The upcoming clash in Cairo between the top teams in Group C is set to be a battle for supremacy. With both teams vying for the top spot in the group, this match is crucial for their progression in the tournament. The home team, Cairo United, has been in stellar form this season, with their attacking prowess and solid defense making them a force to be reckoned with. On the other hand, their opponents, Nile FC, have also been impressive with their quick counter-attacks and clinical finishing.
Both teams have a strong chance of coming out on top, but only one can emerge victorious. The stakes are high, and the tension is palpable as the players gear up for what promises to be a thrilling encounter.
Fans are eagerly anticipating the matchup, with tickets selling out fast. The atmosphere in the stadium is expected to be electric, as supporters from both teams will be cheering on their respective sides.
Who will come out on top in this clash of titans? Stay tuned to find out as Group C supremacy hangs in the balance in Cairo.

Jessica Alba’s Divorce with Cash Warren: What’s at Stake?
As Jessica Alba and Cash Warren proceed with their divorce, which the actress confirmed Jan. 16, there are various assets that will need to be divvied up.
Alba, 43, and Warren, 45, wed in May 2008 and share three kids: Honor, 16, Haven, 13, and Hayes, 7.
“I’ve been on a journey of self realization and transformation for years – both as an individual and in partnership with Cash. I’m proud of how we’ve grown as a couple and in our marriage over the last 20 years and it’s now time for us to embark on a new chapter of growth and evolution as individuals,” Alba shared on Instagram.
“We are moving forward with love, kindness and respect for each other and will forever be family,” she added. “Our children remain our highest priority and we request privacy at this time.”
Attorney Marilyn Chinitz, a matrimonial partner at Blank Rome LLP who isn’t connected to the case, tells PEOPLE, “Hopefully [Alba and Warren] maintain a harmony, a sense of balance and continuity that will take place during a divorce as well, especially because they’re in business together.”

In 2012, Alba founded Honest Company, and while she stepped down from her role as chief creative officer in April 2024, she remains on the organization’s board of directors. Warren is a film producer and the co-founder of Pair of Thieves, a sock and underwear company. Like Alba, he too retains ties to Honest Company.
“He’s also involved in the business. Because they’re not in war with one another — and they’ve made that clear — they may not be in love with one another, but they seem to be able to interact with respect. That’s what they’re going to do most likely in their business until one may want to be bought out by the other,” says Chinitz.

“As long as the business is successful and the sales continue to do well, then why not continue to have ownership? Because who does it benefit? It benefits the three children.”
Chinitz also addresses the question of how a prenuptial agreement, if there is one, may factor into the split.
“It’s really interesting because not every couple does a prenup. And yes, [Alba] was successful before she got married. She was a well-known entity. One would expect that they would have a prenup, but even if they did I don’t know that it would make that big of a difference if they both own a company. It’s a community asset.”

Should one party wish to buy the other out of their share of Honest, however, then Chinitz says the company will have to be properly evaluated.
“If you’re going to continue to own the company, run the company, it doesn’t really matter what it’s valued at because you’re not buying out the other party. Valuation gets triggered when one says, ‘You know what? I don’t really want to be a part of this company. I want to cash out.’ You have to do that in a very thoughtful way. But from all reports at the moment, that company could be, I don’t know, anywhere from a half a billion to a billion,” says Chinitz.

The Trigger Warning actress and Warren also share a mansion in Beverly Hills, which they bought in 2017.
“Who wants to live there? That’s the issue,” says Chinitz. “If she decides that she wants to live there, there’s different ways that they could broker resolution. Number one, she could buy him out. If she doesn’t want to buy him out and he doesn’t want to be bought, that house will go on the market, it will be sold and the proceeds will be shared.”
Alternatively, if the house is owned by what Chinitz calls an irrevocable trust, then neither Alba nor Warren technically have ownership over it. Instead, the property belongs to their trust, presumably for the benefit of the children, and they can choose to remain in the house in whatever arrangement they see fit so long as the children are there.

However, “if the house is in a trust and the house gets sold, the proceeds go back into the trust and they can use the proceeds to buy another house. They can use the proceeds to buy two homes as long as it’s owned by the trust,” says Chinitz, who emphasizes that this divorce will likely be one that puts the kids’ wellbeing first.
“It doesn’t seem that they’re at war. They may not want to be married … and it seems like they both have come to the conclusion that the love has either disappeared or dissipated, but their three children sustain their relationship, as do their joint ownership of a company,” she adds.
“By all vision and optics, it looks like they’re going to go down a path of negotiating a resolution. This is not going to be, in my view, a case like some of the more high-profile litigations that we saw, like Kevin Costner’s case or Brad Pitt’s case. This is not going to be, in my view, from all accounts, a case that’s going be litigated. And that’s a good thing,” she says.
Jessica Alba’s Divorce with Cash Warren: What’s at Stake? The news of Jessica Alba and Cash Warren’s divorce has sent shockwaves through Hollywood. The couple, who have been married for over a decade, have two children together and seemed to have a strong and loving relationship. However, as with many celebrity marriages, things may not always be as they seem.
With their divorce looming, many are wondering what will be at stake for both Jessica and Cash. As successful individuals in their own right, both have built impressive careers and amassed significant wealth. Jessica, known for her acting roles in movies like “Sin City” and her successful lifestyle brand, The Honest Company, has a reported net worth of over $200 million. Cash, a film producer, has also had his share of success in the entertainment industry.
In addition to their financial assets, the couple will also have to navigate the custody of their two children, Honor and Haven. Custody battles can be emotionally and mentally taxing for all parties involved, and it remains to be seen how Jessica and Cash will handle this aspect of their divorce.
As with any high-profile divorce, there will likely be speculation and rumors circulating about the reasons behind the split. But ultimately, what’s at stake for Jessica Alba and Cash Warren is not just their financial assets, but also their family and their future. Only time will tell how this divorce will unfold and what the final outcome will be for this once seemingly happy couple.

#Jessica #Albas #Divorce #Cash #Warren #Whats #StakeBrowns end-of-season checklist: What’s at stake in finale, and what to expect in 2025
The 3-13 Cleveland Browns close the season Saturday in Baltimore. Bailey Zappe will get the start and become the Browns’ 40th starting quarterback since the team’s return to the NFL in 1999. It’s the second straight season they’ve had to use at least four different starting quarterbacks.
Last January, the Browns were headed to the playoffs. This year’s team has been spiraling since September and enters the season finale losers of five straight and seven of its last eight.
Here’s a rundown of the major pregame news from the Browns’ training facility, as well as an outline of what to expect Saturday and in the hours, days and weeks that follow as they close this disappointing season and head toward an uncertain future.
What’s at stake in season finale?
A lot, for both sides. The 11-5 Ravens win the AFC North and clinch a home playoff game with a victory. With a loss, the Browns can guarantee themselves a top-three pick in April’s NFL Draft. If New England beats Buffalo, Cleveland could still end up with the No. 1 pick depending on Tennessee’s result versus Houston and/or the strength of schedule tiebreaker. Entering the weekend, the Browns hold the No. 3 pick.
GO DEEPER
With loss to Dolphins, Browns may be in position to take one of 2025 draft’s top QBs
Under center
Zappe is the latest quarterback for a franchise that’s going to spend the next three to four months looking for its 41st starter since 1999. He becomes the first of the previous 40 to have spent a game watching from the pressbox as an unemployed observer. The Browns had to cut Zappe ahead of their Dec. 2 game in Denver to be able to activate an emergency defensive lineman. The team signed him back the following day, but because Zappe was not under contract, he was not allowed on the sideline area for the game.
Now, four weeks later, he’s making his ninth career start. The Browns signed Zappe off Kansas City’s practice squad in October in the wake of Deshaun Watson’s season-ending Achilles injury. The Browns benched Jameis Winston ahead of Week 15 and now have benched Dorian Thompson-Robinson. If you watched Thompson-Robinson’s two starts, you knew this was coming. We’ll see if Zappe can move the offense and put solid play on tape for the league to evaluate. He’s eligible for restricted free agency in March.
Browns coach Kevin Stefanski has hinted at playing both Zappe and Thompson-Robinson in Baltimore. Presumably, Thompson-Robinson would be used as a change-of-pace option and in potential running situations. There’s no sure thing when it comes to the Browns and quarterbacks — this season, or any since 1999.
Number (and quarterback) chasing
Last week, Myles Garrett became the first player to record at least 14 sacks in four consecutive seasons. Garrett enters the season finale tied with Trey Hendrickson of the Cincinnati Bengals for the NFL lead with 14 sacks, and he’s trying to win his first sack title and repeat as the NFL’s Defensive Player of the Year.
Garrett turned 29 last weekend, and in Week 16 he became the youngest player to reach 100 career sacks. Garrett has 5 1/2 sacks of the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson in nine games against the quarterback, who has 39 touchdown passes and four interceptions entering Week 18 and can join Aaron Rodgers (2020) as the only players with at least 40 touchdown passes and five or fewer interceptions in a season in NFL history.
With 182 passing yards and 31 rushing yards Saturday, the Ravens can become the first team in NFL history to record 4,000 passing yards and 3,000 rushing yards in the same season. With one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown, the Ravens can become the first team to reach 40 pass touchdowns and 20 rush touchdowns in the same season.
The Browns, on the other hand, have 18 passing and eight rushing touchdowns on the season.
Big decisions ahead
Last month, Garrett said he’ll meet with the team’s decision-makers in the offseason and will need to see the franchise’s plan for returning the team to playoff contention before he commits to a future with the Browns. Though Garrett is under contract for two more seasons and might have been just angling for an extension and raise, the comments marked a sharp turn from his previous stance that he’d be playing in Cleveland.
Garrett has said he doesn’t want to be part of another rebuild. The big-spending Browns might try to resist taking on another teardown, but the overall state of the roster might require that. Stefanski and general manager Andrew Berry both signed extensions last spring, though it’s pretty clear that buyout money wouldn’t be an issue with the way the Browns have spent in recent seasons. This 2024 team was the most expensive in NFL history before the Browns traded Za’Darius Smith and Amari Cooper, who combine for about $36 million in dead money on the team’s 2025 salary cap.
There’s been no public indication that the Browns plan to move on from either Stefanski or Berry, though the failures of this season almost certainly mean there will be changes on some level. The combination of the 2022 trade for Watson and his contract is one of the worst in NFL history, and the Browns continue to re-work Watson’s contract as the team still has more than $170 million in cap commitments to the quarterback going forward.
With the three first-rounders given away in the Watson deal and multiple misses in the middle rounds of other drafts, can the Browns trust Berry and the team’s current front office and scouting system to deliver big (and nearly mandatory) hits in the 2025 draft? There’s not a lot of evidence that points to yes.
Perhaps the Browns will shake up the coaching staff again. Last offseason, they remade the offensive staff, most notably with Ken Dorsey taking over as offensive coordinator and Andy Dickerson replacing Bill Callahan as offensive line coach. The Browns’ special teams units have been awful this season, too, leaving special teams coach Bubba Ventrone as another name to watch in the coming days. Stefanski handed the play-calling duties to Dorsey in October, and Winston delivered two big games. Otherwise, the offense going back to August has been a major disappointment.
Part of the reason there’s no easy way to predict the Browns’ pending decisions is that there are a lot of layers to them. What the team decides to do at quarterback next year — and, likely, with future years in mind — will affect the draft strategy, salary cap, free-agency strategy and more. The Dorsey hire was supposed to help fix Watson, but the entire thing was a flop even before he suffered another season-ending injury.
Browns Pro Bowlers, announced Thursday: Garrett (sixth), Denzel Ward (fourth), Jerry Jeudy (first). With 1,166 yards, Jeudy enters Week 18 sixth in the NFL in receiving.

Contributors who are eligible for free agency in March: Winston, Michael Dunn, James Hudson III, Zappe (restricted free agency), James Proche, Mike Ford Jr., D’Anthony Bell (restricted free agency).
2025 opponents: Dates and times will be released at some point in May. In addition to playing each of their three division rivals home and away, here are Cleveland’s other 2025 opponents:
