  • Jimmie Johnson doubles down on free throw competition with Shaquille O’Neal, raises stakes

The back-and-forth between Jimmie Johnson and Shaquille O’Neal took another turn Friday. The NASCAR icon fired back at the NBA legend and made a new proposal in their free throw competition.

This all started when O’Neal called out Johnson for trying for the Daytona 500 once again. He will look to make his 22nd appearance in the race, and O’Neal joked about whether 22 years was enough. Johnson said he still has more in the tank, but asked how Shaq’s jump shot is.

The social media spat continued and developed into a free throw competition. O’Neal suggested he’d get to drive Johnson’s Daytona car if he wins. But Johnson took things a step further.

“Oh, classic @SHAQ sliding in my DMs,” Johnson wrote Friday. “Only place you’re driving my car is to dinner. If you win, you can design my Daytona car—how good are you with crayons? If I win, I’ve got some sweet gear for you to rock.”

More on Jimmie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal’s back-and-forth

O’Neal, of course, wasn’t known much for that jump shot or his efficiency at the charity stripe. He retired as a career 52% free throw shooter but was as dominant a center as anyone has ever seen in the NBA. Without knowing much of his prowess on the hardwood, Johnson has to like his chances against O’Neal — in a free throw competition, that is.

O’Neal, of course, retired from the NBA in 2011 and is a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. He’s also a staple of TNT’s Inside The NBA, which will move to ESPN next season as part of a sublicensing agreement.

Johnson, meanwhile, made his Daytona 500 debut in 2002 and has two victories to his name. But at 49 years old, he’s racing a more limited schedule.

As part of his announcement, he also released his 2025 schedule. It only includes a second race in the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte. If he qualifies in both races, Charlotte will be his 700th Cup Series start. Carvana will serve as the sponsor for Johnson, and he will be back in the No. 84 for his team, Legacy Motor Club.

Johnson, who co-owns Legacy alongside Maury Gallagher, has competed in 12 races over the last two seasons, making nine starts in 2024. His best finish was a P26 result in the last season’s finale at Phoenix. Johnson has an average finish of 31.8.

    Nick Geddes contributed.

Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson is not backing down from his latest challenge against basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal. After their intense free throw competition went viral on social media, Johnson has decided to raise the stakes and double down on their friendly rivalry.

In a recent interview, Johnson revealed that he and Shaq have agreed to a rematch on the basketball court, but this time with even higher stakes. Not only will the loser have to wear the other’s jersey during a NASCAR race, but they have also decided to donate $10,000 to charity in the winner’s name.

“I’m not one to back down from a challenge, especially when it comes to competing against a legend like Shaq,” Johnson said. “I may not be able to dunk like him, but I’ll do whatever it takes to come out on top in this free throw competition.”

The NASCAR superstar has been putting in extra practice on the basketball court in preparation for the rematch, determined to show that he has what it takes to outshoot the 7’1″ basketball icon.

Fans are eagerly awaiting the results of this epic showdown between two sports greats, eager to see who will come out on top and claim bragging rights in this unique cross-sport rivalry. Stay tuned for updates on the Johnson vs. O’Neal free throw competition!

  • ‘Invincible’ Creator Robert Kirkman Unmasks the Heightened Stakes of Season 3

This article was written for the
March ’25 issue of Animation Magazine (No. 348).

Prime Video’s superhero saga, Invincible, is soaring into its third eight-episode season this month with the compelling story of teenager Mark Grayson (Steven Yeun) and his violent escapades as a caped crimefighter saddled with the dark legacy of Omni-Man, his extraterrestrial father (J.K. Simmons).

Created by The Walking Dead’s Robert Kirkman and crafted from the acclaimed 2003-2018 Image comic-book series by Kirkman and artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, Skybound Entertainment and Amazon MGM Studios’ Invincible series has attracted a fierce following over its last two seasons of adult-aimed animated brutality on Prime Video, and received Emmy, Annie Award, Saturn and Critics Choice nominations along the way.

This fresh season promises more emotional confrontations with a guilt-stricken Omni-Man and Allen the Alien (Seth Rogen) teaming up to bust out of a Viltrumite prison, Mark amping up his training regime with Cecil (Walton Goggins) to don the notorious blue-and-black costume, the Guardians of the Globe dealing with conflicts internal and external, and Mark’s superpowered half-brother Oliver growing at an accelerated rate as Mark strives to shelter his loved ones.

Bigger, Wilder, Crazier: The third season of ‘Invincible’ introduces Mark’s transformative blue suit era in the storyline and features bigger, wilder and more intense narratives that echo what was set up in the first season of the show.

    Amping Up the Action

“I think the center of the show is really Mark Grayson’s evolution and Invincible growing as a superhero and learning things as a superhero and making mistakes,” Kirkman tells Animation Magazine. “So we saw a lot of that in Season 2. He’s definitely maturing. He’s doing a lot of training, he’s doing a lot of preparing. He knows from Anissa’s visit that there’s more conflict brewing and bigger threats looming on the horizon that he needs to prepare for. That propulsion is something that’s really important to us. We’re always moving forward and throwing as many problems as possible at Mark and the other characters. Season 3 is where we’re really stepping on the gas. It kicks off and hits the ground running. If you thought Season 2 was fast paced, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

“We’re always moving forward and throwing as many problems as possible at Mark and the other characters. Season 3 is where we’re really stepping on the gas. It kicks off and hits the ground running. If you thought Season 2 was fast paced, you haven’t seen anything yet.”

    — Creator/exec producer Robert Kirkman

Executive producer and showrunner Simon Racioppa believes that part of Invincible’s promise and appeal derive from the fact that the writers never forget what has happened before.

“There’s going to be repercussions of things that happened in Season 1 that are going to affect our characters in Season 3,” Racioppa adds. “Nothing ever resets. A lot of our characters are carrying emotional trauma from things that happened back in Season 1. It’s really important to be true to that all the way through the run of the show. It’s never like, ‘Oh, it’s time for another adventure on Invincible.’ You could probably just start with episode one and watch the whole series all the way through and it almost doesn’t feel like there’s any gap between the seasons. Season 3 will pick up right off the end of Season 2. And we hope that helps ground the series. Terrible things happened in Season 2 and that’s going to have an effect on Season 3.”

Omni Family Reunion: ‘Sweet Tooth’ star Christian Convery joins the cast in S3 as Oliver Grayson. New cast members for this season also include Aaron Paul, Kate Mara, John DiMaggio, Tzi Ma, Xolo Maridueña, Simu Liu, Jonathan Banks and Doug Bradley.

One of the most popular staples in the pop culture universe is the anxiety-ridden waiting period to see what uncanny powers blossom from the offspring of superheroes as in the case of Franklin Richards of Marvel’s Fantastic Four world, or even baby Jack-Jack in Pixar’s Incredibles films. Such is the case with Mark’s younger sibling Oliver, the purple-skinned product of Omni-Man and his insectoid Thraxan wife, Andressa. Season 3 will see Oliver emerge as Kid Omni-Man!

“We did figure out in the comics a cool narrative way to have Oliver age rapidly,” Kirkman explains. “So that even though the comic kind of plays with time at a deliberate pace and you don’t really have people aging in real time, you can have that character growth from a baby to wherever we get with him, which is kind of fun. Oliver represents a lot of things in the show. It’s Nolan’s influence from afar coming into Earth, affecting Mark in some huge ways, affecting Debbie in huge ways. He’s a baby at the end of Season 2, but as you watch Season 3 you’ll see he’s growing rapidly and becoming a full-fledged character that’s an integral member of our cast and shaking everything up in a lot of really cool ways.”

Invincible [c/o Prime Video © Amazon Content Services LLC]

Kirkman feels that shifting into Season 3 the team has clearly established what this show is. “This is the Mark Grayson show,” he says. “But as we continue to adapt the comic there’s a lot more Omni-Man, which is really cool. It’s great to be working more with J.K. Simmons and having that character more present. Now we’re just getting into the details of the story and the characters and fleshing them out as much as possible and giving them interesting things to do, and getting to some really cool things from the comics that I think people are going to be excited to see.”

Fortified with 16 hours of the show now under its belt, Invincible can confidently stride into this next block of episodes knowing that the audience has a familiarity with its character roster.

“It lets us go deeper into relationships, spend more time with those characters, and makes it more fun to write for too,” says Racioppa. “It’s nice having that sort of history that lets you reference that back into the characters and show what they’ve already been through affects what they’re going to do next, and their emotional state. The whole team came together in the transition. When you hit those moments it’s a beautiful high. You’re trying to achieve something great that has an emotional resonance that hopefully will affect our audience.”

As fans of the comic-book series know, Mark Grayson gets a brand new blue costume at this point in the unfolding story and as seen in the teaser trailers it makes a bold statement.

Invincible [c/o Prime Video © Amazon Content Services LLC]

    Changing Colors

“There were a lot of variations done by the design team, Shaun O’Neil and Dou Hong and her team, trying to figure out how to interpret the blue costume from the comics,” Kirkman notes. “The costume change is a superhero trope. Spider-Man gets the black costume and everybody hates the black costume. Then two years later they get rid of the black costume and everybody doesn’t want to go back to the old costume. And that kind of thing actually happened. There were letters from people who didn’t like the blue-and-black costume. When we retired it and went back to the original costume there were lots of people complaining. Now that we’re doing it in the show, the fanbase that read the comics and knows what’s coming, they’re like, ‘Ah, the blue-and-black era! We’re so excited.’ I want to say, ‘You guys weren’t so excited when it started.’

“I wrote the comic for 16 years and I believe there was a week or two gap between writing the last issue and starting the pilot for this series,” Kirkman says. “I just love this world and these characters and feel really fortunate to have the opportunity to do it again. What’s most exciting to me is doing this as a second draft of the comic if you will, and finding those things to improve upon. It’s a fun process, I’m working with a lot of good people, and the fan response has been tremendous. And they haven’t even seen Season 3 yet. Just wait!”

Invincible Season 3 will begin streaming on Prime Video on February 6.

  • Trump’s tariff threat worked on Colombia, but his plans for Canada and Mexico carry higher stakes

WASHINGTON (AP) — Having already forced Colombia to accept deportees by threatening a 25% tariff, President Donald Trump is readying the same move against Canada and Mexico as soon as Saturday.

But this time, the stakes are higher and many economists surveying the possible damage doubt Trump would be comfortable with what they say would be self-inflicted wounds from the tariffs.

“The potential for such sizable economic impacts ought to act as enough of a deterrent that Trump will not end up implementing these higher tariffs,” said Matthew Martin, senior U.S. economist at the consultancy Oxford Economics.

Trump has repeatedly insisted that tariffs are coming on Canada and Mexico, despite both countries seeking to address his stated concerns about illegal border crossings and the smuggling of fentanyl. But the Republican president is also motivated by the idea that tariffs would force other countries to “respect” the United States.

“We’re going to immediately install massive tariffs,” Trump said in a Monday speech, adding, “Colombia is traditionally a very, very strong-willed country,” but it backed down rather than face import taxes.

Tariffs are a risk, but the Trump White House says it’s looking at the big picture

Multiple economic analyses show that universal tariffs against Canada and Mexico risk more inflation and an economic slowdown. It’s a much larger play than Trump’s moves against Colombia, which accounts for roughly 0.5% of U.S. imports. By contrast, nearly 30% of all U.S. imports hail from Canada and Mexico, amplifying the risk that tariffs could fuel inflation and undermine Trump’s campaign promises to get prices under control.

Trump’s director of the White House National Economic Council, Kevin Hassett, dismissed these concerns. He said the skeptical analyses of tariffs don’t look at the totality of Trump’s promises.

“When the people who are trying to cause panic over President Trump’s trade policy simulate what it’s going to do, they don’t account for all the other policies,” Hassett said in a Monday interview on the Fox Business Network. “So President Trump is drill, baby, drill, and deregulate and tax cuts and reduce spending.”

Mexico and Canada are ready to respond

After Trump’s initial threat of 25% tariffs in November, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum suggested Mexico could retaliate with tariffs of its own. Since then, she has been more measured, choosing to emphasize the strong bilateral relationship and willingness to engage in dialogue as the number of detentions at the U.S.-Mexico border has plunged.

Sheinbaum pointed out in November that drugs were a U.S. problem, but in December the Mexican military seized more than a ton of fentanyl pills in two raids, calling it the biggest catch of synthetic opioids in Mexico’s history.

On Monday, Sheinbaum applauded the agreement reached by the Trump administration and Colombia.

“I believe the important thing, as I said on the first day, is to always act with a cool head, defending each country’s sovereignty and the respect among nations and peoples,” she said.

Top Canadian ministers said last week that Canada was prepared to retaliate if Trump imposed import taxes, even as Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said they “will continue to work on preventing tariffs.” The working theory in Canada appears to involve being ready for anything that the U.S. president might do.

Tariffs could slow the economy and hurt the oil and auto sectors

On Monday, the economics division of the insurance company Nationwide estimated that Trump’s proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico would increase inflation by as much as 0.5 percentage points and pull down growth by 0.7 percentage points.

The analysis noted it did not “account for potential retaliatory tariffs from Canada or Mexico, which could amplify the deleterious impact on inflation and GDP growth.”

Trump has made lower gasoline prices one of his key strategies for tackling inflation, but tariffs on Canada could drive up prices at the pump unless Trump creates carveouts in his plan.

“For example, 60% of oil and gas imports come from Canada,” said Oxford Economics’ Martin. “A 25% tariff would lead to higher gasoline, diesel, and petroleum product prices for households and firms, especially in the Midwest and Rocky Mountain regions, where refineries are connected to Canada by pipeline.”

The tax services firm PwC looked at the possible impact of 25% tariffs and found that companies importing from Canada could have to pay $106 billion more annually in import taxes and those importing from Mexico could owe $131 billion more.

“When we think about hardest-hit industries, we think about transportation and automotive,” said Chris Desmond, a principal at PwC’s international trade practice. “The amount of companies that have operations in Mexico and Canada in that industry with components and parts as well, including even airplanes, that’s going to be a huge hit.”

Desmond estimates that taxes paid on imports in the transportation sector from all of Trump’s tariff plans, which include new taxes on China and other countries, could increase from $4 billion a year to $68 billion. It’s unclear how companies would absorb those costs or possibly pass them along to consumers.

None of those analyses is at the forefront of Trump’s public thoughts. His argument is that tariffs would make the U.S. wealthy by sheltering it from competition and safer because they could be tools to force other countries to reduce illegal immigration.

“Tariffs, I told you, most beautiful word in the dictionary,” Trump said Monday as he recalled his campaign speeches praising the import taxes. He reminisced in that speech how he was criticized for praising the term, prompting him to conclude that tariff is, in fact, the fourth most beautiful word after “God, love, religion.”

President Trump’s recent threat to impose tariffs on Colombian goods seems to have achieved its intended effect, with Colombia agreeing to take measures to combat drug trafficking. However, his plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico could carry much higher stakes for the United States.

The threat of tariffs on Colombian goods was used as leverage to push the country to crack down on the production and trafficking of illegal drugs. This tactic seems to have worked, as Colombia has now pledged to take stronger actions to combat drug trafficking.

On the other hand, Trump’s plans to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico could have far-reaching consequences. The United States has strong economic ties with both countries, and imposing tariffs could lead to retaliatory measures that could harm American businesses and consumers.

Additionally, Canada and Mexico are key allies in trade negotiations and security issues. By imposing tariffs on these countries, Trump could jeopardize ongoing efforts to renegotiate NAFTA and address other important issues.

Overall, while Trump’s tariff threat may have worked in the case of Colombia, his plans for Canada and Mexico carry much higher stakes and could have serious implications for the United States’ economy and international relationships.

  • “Stakes can not be higher” — The Challenge star Rachel comments on the competition among the women

“Stakes can not be higher” — The Challenge star Rachel comments on the competition among the women

The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras will release its much-anticipated finale on Wednesday, January 1, 2025. It will document the last leg of the season, during which the eight finalists will take on a gauntlet of intense obstacles for a chance at winning the $1,000,000 cash prize and the champion’s title. Four men and four women remain, each determined to give tough competition to one another.

In an exclusive sneak peek of the finale, posted on The Challenge‘s official Instagram handle on December 28, 2024, Era I representative Rachel Robinson was shown sitting with the three other female contenders, contemplating the competition she would face during the finale. She refused to undermine anyone’s capabilities and knew each participant would give it their all to survive.

“Every woman has to wanna win the last women’s challenge day. The stakes can not be higher right now,” Rachel said in a confessional.

The previous episode of The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras bid farewell to Cara Maria Sorbello, advancing Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio, Derek Chavez, Jenny West, Jordan Wiseley, Kyland Young, Michele Fitzgerald, Rachel Robinson, and Tori Deal to the final stage of the competition.

“We’re all very strong women” — The Challenge‘s Rachel claims anyone could emerge victorious

Despite staying in the water for almost two and a half hours, Cara Maria failed to outlast Tori Deal in The Final Elimination, which had the competitors treading water for as long as possible. Cara Maria’s fear of marine creatures and dislike of swimming heightened, costing her a place in the finale. As a result of her elimination, Tori, Rachel, Jenny, and Michele made it through to the last stage.

The sneak peek of The Challenge 40: Battle of the Eras season finale showed the four female finalists discussing the competition they would face in their closing chapter of the series. Although they respected each other’s gameplay and strategy, they refused to let their Era down by handing the victory to someone else.

“Anyone of us could get it. Looking at everyone that is left in the game, we’re all very strong women. At this point, it’s just surviving to the final,” Rachel said.

In the meantime, Tori confessed that tensions were sky-high and would continue to snowball as they competed. Jenny added to the conversation, saying “May the best woman win.” However, in the next sentence, she jokingly mentioned that the competition would reduce if she sneaked into Tori’s room at night and broke all her fingers.

Rachel laughed at Jenny’s joke, while Tori said:

    “Not my fingers!”

Meanwhile, Jenny continued mimicking a chopping action, hoping to lighten the mood.

The Challenge 40‘s Cara Maria praised the women’s dedication and hard work

In an interview with Parade, published on December 18, 2024, Cara Maria Sorbello commented on the women’s gameplay, praising their journey and applauding them for holding their own and reaching the last leg of the competitive series.

The Challenge 40 evictee complimented Tori for respecting the game and her competitors. Cara Maria revealed that Tori never stopped training and displayed commendable growth on the show which made her a strong contender for the winner’s title.

“She told me she was training four hours a day, running on the beach, doing math problems, doing puzzles, going swimming, intensive boot camps. She wanted to win. She knew the level of women competition was going to be through the roof, and she put in the work, and it showed,” Cara Maria said.

Cara Maria was equally complimentary of Michele, praising her hard work in the game. Although Michele led with her heart, she ensured that she outperformed others and stayed in the competition.

Although Cara Maria failed to make it to the finale, she believed she fared well against some of the “best swimmers” that had ever been on The Challenge.

The Challenge 40: The Battle of the Eras will air its finale on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, at 8 pm ET only on MTV.
