  • Donald Trump called ‘The Apprentice’ a ‘hatchet job.’ Now, Sebastian Stan is an Oscar nominee for his portrayal of the president.

When the 2025 Oscar nominations were announced on Thursday, one of the most surprising nods went to Sebastian Stan for Best Actor — the first of his career.

The surprise, to be clear, wasn’t seeing Stan’s name in such lofty company. Long a fan favorite for his roles as Gossip Girl’s Carter Baizen and Marvel’s Bucky Barnes, Stan, 42, has enjoyed a breakout year on the big screen. So much so that he won a Golden Globe (for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy) earlier this month.

But Stan got his Golden Globe for portraying an actor with neurofibromatosis who undergoes an experimental procedure to change his face in A Different Man.

His Oscar nomination, in contrast, is for playing Donald Trump in The Apprentice.

It’s hard to imagine a more fraught performance — or a more charged moment for it to be recognized. Since 1929, the academy has nominated seven other actors for playing U.S. presidents, but none of those presidents were still in office — issuing controversial executive orders, dividing public opinion and generally dominating American public life — when the nods were unveiled. Instead, they were all historical figures: preserved in the past, without any real power to influence the present.

But Trump is arguably the most powerful person in the world. And Stan’s path to the Oscars has been anything but assured as a result.

Written by journalist Gabriel Sherman and directed by filmmaker Ali Abbasi, The Apprentice attempts to tell Trump’s “origin story” through the lens of his relationship with notorious New York lawyer Roy Cohn (played by Succession star Jeremy Strong).

Jeremy Strong, left, and Sebastian Stan in The Apprentice.

“Looking back on some of those earlier interviews with [Trump] when he was really young and trying to get tax abatements to [build] the Grand Hyatt, there was something … pure and honest,” Stan told Yahoo Entertainment in October. “There was great potential that I saw in that person at that time.”

In Stan’s view, it was the hard-charging Cohn who taught Trump to be more “brutal.”

“The loss of empathy and humanity, I think, was really tragic,” Stan said.

Speaking to Yahoo Entertainment, Abbasi described The Apprentice — which depicts Trump raping his first wife Ivana, downing amphetamines to lose weight and battling baldness with liposuction and plastic surgery — as “raw but balanced.” (Ivana Trump accused her then-husband of rape in a sworn 1990 divorce deposition, then recanted the accusation in 1993, saying she felt “violated” but did not mean for her words to be interpreted “in a literal or criminal sense.”)

Needless to say, Trump and those around him see The Apprentice differently. Early investor Dan Snyder, a billionaire who once owned the NFL’s Washington Commanders and donated more than a million dollars to Trump’s political efforts, was reportedly “furious” with a February 2024 rough cut; lawyers for his production company soon began to fight its release.

When the film finally debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, Trump’s attorneys responded with a cease-and-desist letter seeking to block “all marketing, distribution, and publication.” Trump himself weighed in on Truth Social a few months later, calling The Apprentice “a cheap, defamatory, and politically disgusting hatchet job” made by “HUMAN SCUM” and designed to “hurt” him “right before the 2024 Presidential Election.”

Hollywood wasn’t particularly welcoming, either. According to Abbasi, both Paul Thomas Anderson and Clint Eastwood passed on directing the film due to “business risk,” and almost every Hollywood studio declined to distribute it.

“I wasn’t naive about [Trump] being a divisive figure,” the director told Yahoo Entertainment, “but I was maybe a bit naive about how the rest of the world would embrace that and how the corporate structure in Hollywood would want to jump on the opportunity.”

With a limited budget for marketing and distribution, The Apprentice opened on Oct. 11 and earned just $17.3 million at the box office. The following month, Stan revealed at a Q&A that Variety had invited him to participate in its Actors on Actors series — but that none of his counterparts would agree to a mutual interview.

“Actors, directors, producers, writers who have seen the movie rave about it” in private, Stan said, “but I couldn’t find another actor to do it with me because they were too afraid to go and talk about this movie.”

“We couldn’t get past the publicists or the people representing them,” he added.

(In a statement to USA Today, Variety co-editor in chief Ramin Setoodeh confirmed that “other actors didn’t want to pair with [Stan] because they didn’t want to talk about Donald Trump.”)

In a way, then, Thursday’s Oscar nomination represents vindication for Stan: a belated public admission of what industry types were privately telling him all along. Now academy voters have an opportunity to send Trump a message on March 2. It will be fascinating to see if they take it.

In a shocking turn of events, former President Donald Trump has come out swinging against the hit reality TV show “The Apprentice,” calling it a “hatchet job” and claiming that it unfairly portrayed him in a negative light.

However, despite Trump’s protests, it seems that the show has ultimately had a positive impact on one actor’s career. Sebastian Stan, known for his roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and various other films, has just been nominated for an Oscar for his portrayal of Trump in a new biopic.

Stan’s performance has been praised for its uncanny resemblance to the former president, as well as its depth and nuance. Many critics have hailed it as a career-defining performance for the actor, who has previously been known for his charming and often villainous roles.

It seems that Trump’s criticism of “The Apprentice” has inadvertently launched Stan to new heights in his career, with the actor now being recognized for his incredible talent and dedication to his craft. Only time will tell if Stan will take home the coveted Oscar, but one thing is for sure – his portrayal of Trump will go down in history as one of the most memorable performances of our time.

  • Sebastian Stan and ‘I’m Still Here’ earn unexpected nods, Selena Gomez shut out

At long last, the 2025 Oscar nominations are here — and there are a number of snubs and surprises in the field.

Some people have expressed concerns about moving forward with the Academy Awards after wildfires devastated parts of Los Angeles. Following a few delays in the nominations announcement, the show is planned to go on, airing March 2.

Emilia Pérez leads the pack with 13 nominations, despite its budding reputation as the villain of this awards season. Wicked and The Brutalist are close behind with 10 nods.

Trusted news and daily delights, right in your inbox

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.

Yahoo Entertainment is guiding you through which movies and actors many people were shocked to see make the list and shocked to see left out of the nominations.

    Snubs

    Selena Gomez in

    Selena Gomez

The trio of core actresses from Emilia Pérez were often nominated for awards this season, but this time, Gomez missed out on a nod for her supporting role. Karla Sofía Gascón and Zoe Saldaña were both recognized by academy voters.

    Challengers and Queer

Both of director Luca Guadagnino’s eligible films were shut out of the Oscars.

Winning a Golden Globe didn’t generate enough buzz to get Challengers a nomination for Best Score, and Daniel Craig missed out on an expected Best Actor nomination for Queer.

    Marianne Jean-Baptiste

Though she has already racked up several nominations for her emotionally complex lead role in Hard Truths, she was snubbed by the Golden Globes and Oscars.

    Angelina Jolie

Considered a frontrunner by many for her performance as the title character in Maria, she wasn’t among those nominated this time around for Best Actress.

    A Real Pain

Though Kieran Culkin is dominating the Best Supporting Actor race this season and actor-director Jesse Eisenberg received a nomination for Best Original Screenplay, the film itself wasn’t nominated for Best Picture.

    Nickel Boys

The unique POV filming style used in Nickel Boys didn’t earn it a cinematography nomination, though it’s a welcome surprise to see it get a Best Picture nod.

    Jon M. Chu

Though Wicked earned an impressive 10 nods overall, its director wasn’t nominated himself.

    Surprises

    Demi Moore.

    The Substance

Though the film has been part of awards conversations all along, it’s still surprising to see a campy horror film receive five Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Coralie Fargeat and Best Actress for Demi Moore.

    Nosferatu

Just like with The Substance, it’s unexpected to see a horror film rack up so many awards — but Nosferatu hasn’t been considered a contender as much as The Substance has. Its four nominations for Production Design, Cinematography, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling come as a huge shock.

    Monica Barbaro

A Complete Unknown has been gaining momentum over the past few months, and a Best Supporting Actress nod for Barbaro cements the academy’s love for the film.

    Sebastian Stan

The actor earned a double nomination at the Golden Globes for Best Actor in both categories — but he won for the comedy A Different Man. At the Oscars, he’s just nominated for portraying Donald Trump in The Apprentice.

    I’m Still Here

Fernanda Torres earned a Golden Globe for her performance in the Brazilian drama, but it’s striking to see the film nominated for Best Picture.

In a surprising turn of events, Sebastian Stan and the film ‘I’m Still Here’ have received unexpected nods from critics and award shows, while Selena Gomez has been noticeably shut out.

Stan, known for his roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and acclaimed performances in indie films, has been earning praise for his portrayal in ‘I’m Still Here’, a heartfelt drama about mental health and resilience. The film itself has also been gaining attention for its poignant storytelling and powerful message.

On the other hand, Selena Gomez, who has been making waves in the entertainment industry with her music and acting career, has unfortunately been left out of the awards conversation this season. Despite her talent and popularity, Gomez has yet to receive any major nominations for her recent projects.

While it’s always disappointing to see deserving artists overlooked, it’s heartening to see lesser-known talents like Sebastian Stan and ‘I’m Still Here’ getting the recognition they deserve. Here’s hoping that Gomez will have more opportunities to shine in the future and that the industry continues to celebrate a diverse range of voices and talents.

  • Sebastian Stan Chose To Use His Marvel Platform To Run Towards Awards Season, Not Action Movie Paydays

At first glance, it looks like Sebastian Stan went through a standard list of easiest paths to an Academy Award, and his eyes lit up at the top two: Look different, or impersonate a famous person. If you can do both at once, all the better. This fall, Stan was on movie screens with two movies within weeks of each other, doing one, and then both. In A Different Man, he plays a man with neurofibromatosis, a condition that causes multiple large but noncancerous tumors; in The Apprentice, he plays a man with a far more dire genetic condition known as membership in the Trump family. Specifically, Stan plays Donald Trump in the ’70s and ’80s, well before he became the 45th or 47th president of the United States.

Stan, you may recall, is Marvel-ready handsome, most famous-ish for playing Bucky Barnes (also known as the Winter Soldier) in the Captain America movies and various adjacent Marvel projects. In other words, he has exactly the manner of good looks that the Academy loves to see altered by make-up and/or an impression. How does this man not have an Oscar in the bag? Hell, if he held one of the movies for 2025, maybe he could have won two in a row!

Yet with Oscar nominations due out this morning, Stan is a longshot fifth-slot contender more than a slam dunk; rather than complementing each other for the “you had a good year” effect, A Different Man and The Apprentice seem, if anything, at odds with each other, possibly leaving voters unsure of where to cast their votes. They’re also badges of honor representing some of Stan’s best work ever, so it’s only natural that he’ll probably be passed over for awards.

Though The Apprentice has made far more at the worldwide box office (albeit still not very much), critics and now streaming audiences seem to have chosen A Different Man, which recently hit its subscription-streaming window on Max. This is sort of a heartening development, because it’s by far the more difficult movie of the two, in a way that’s often delightfully antagonistic of its on-paper awards chances. Stan plays Edward, who despite his unusual condition aspires to work as an actor in New York. His next-door neighbor Ingrid (Renate Reinsve) is even a playwright, but he’s timid about attempting to take their friendship any further. But then doctors are able to offer Edward a miraculous procedure that rids him of his tumors. Edward jumps at the chance, and doesn’t stop there; faking his death, he reinvents himself as “Guy” and starts his life over.

A DIFFERENT MAN STREAMING MOVIE REVIEW
    Photo: Everett Collection

Yes, the elaborate makeup job is something of a feint; Stan spends most of the movie playing a man as conventionally handsome as, well, Sebastian Stan – though he does don a prosthetic mask simulating neurofibromatosis when he’s cast in the play Ingrid winds up writing about Edward (without realizing she’s cast this unrecognizable version of Edward to play himself). Edward/Guy is also vexed by the sudden presence of Oswald, another man with neurofibromatosis (played by Adam Pearson, who has the condition in real life) who has all the confidence and charisma that Edward lacks, in either form. The whole thing is far more Charlie Kaufman-esque, lightly surreal and sometimes bordering on dream/nightmare logic, than it is an inspirational story about the triumph of the human spirit. Edward doesn’t like himself very much as the movie starts, and, if anything, he becomes more frustrated and lonely after his transformation (and Stan’s anti-transformation), possibly because he now has something to hide.

There’s transformation at the heart of The Apprentice, too; when the movie joins a younger Trump in the 1970s, he’s an unformed version of the blustery quasi-showman unafraid to voice a high opinion of himself. This younger Trump has the coarseness and some of the baseline self-confidence – not the same level, but he yearns for a business deal that can prove his worth to his gruff father, without much evidence that he actually has any skills in that area – but lacks the forcefulness of personality, the ruthlessness that bulldozes over everything else. in the movie’s telling, he learns this from attorney Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), and by the movie’s jump to the 1980s, Trump has applied those lessons to his business, his family, his life… at what price, etc.

Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump in THE APPRENTICE
Photo: Briarcliff Entertainment / Courtesy Everett Collection

The movie doesn’t ultimately have a lot of depth, because Trump himself doesn’t, either – but to this end, Stan’s performance takes the “character” about as far as possible. He obviously doesn’t much resemble Donald at any age, so he needs to really embody Trump with, if not necessarily precision, some degree of continuity, and his work early on in the movie, where you can see a sort of messy outline of the future, more familiar Trump – his own lousy SNL-style impression of himself – is remarkable. A lot of thought and technique obviously went into it, and the movie was largely shunned by studios, seemingly out of fear of Trump reprisal.

There might be a hint of that resistance in Stan’s lack of awards attention for The Apprentice, too. But it’s more that both of his 2024 movies actively undermine popular awards narratives about what constitutes good acting. In A Different Man, Stan begins the movie having transformed himself, via some impressive makeup, into living in someone else’s skin, but he winds up making his personal default setting – a handsome guy who looks like he could be on TV or in movies – so deeply uncomfortable, even as it will look superficially familiar to anyone who has seen the actor before. He spends more time in different hair and makeup to play Trump, but it’s not to perform a flawless imitation of one of the world’s most famous people, but rather to strip away some of that familiarity and offer a greater understanding on what’s beneath. Counterintuitively, at least as far as Hollywood biopics are concerned, there’s little empathy involved in this process. We don’t find out that Trump is a sad, wounded little boy, even though the ingredients are there; we also don’t find out that Edward is a beautiful soul underneath his initially unconventional looks. Stan’s 2024 performances don’t strip away his good looks so much as they reveal the terrifying void that refuses to fully swallow them up.

Sebastian Stan has proven himself to be a versatile actor, showcasing his talent in both action-packed Marvel movies and award-worthy films. However, it seems that he has made a conscious decision to prioritize awards season recognition over big paychecks from action movie roles.

While many actors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have chosen to stick to blockbuster franchises for financial stability, Stan has taken a different path. Instead of signing on for multiple superhero films, he has opted to pursue more challenging and nuanced roles in independent and dramatic films.

Stan’s commitment to his craft and desire to be taken seriously as an actor is evident in his choice of projects. From his critically acclaimed performances in films like “I, Tonya” and “Destroyer” to his upcoming role in the highly anticipated drama “Pam & Tommy,” Stan is proving that he is more than just a Marvel superhero.

By choosing to use his Marvel platform to run towards awards season recognition, Stan is carving out a unique and impressive career for himself. While he may not be raking in the same blockbuster paydays as some of his MCU co-stars, his dedication to his craft and willingness to take on challenging roles is sure to pay off in the long run.

Fans of Sebastian Stan can look forward to seeing him continue to push boundaries and deliver standout performances on both the big and small screen. With his talent and determination, it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a major player in Hollywood’s awards season circuit.
