EXCLUSIVE | How Yashasvi Jaiswal cracked the Mitchell Starc code in Australia

NEW DELHI: With the new ball in his hand, Australian speedster and ‘smiling assassin’ Mitchell Starc made a habit of scripting euphoric starts whenever he faced India’s young batter Yashasvi Jaiswal during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
In the opening Test in Perth, Starc unleashed his fiery pace, dismissing Yashasvi for a duck to mark the latter’s introduction to Test cricket in Australia.
However, Jaiswal responded in the second innings with a brilliant century, helping India to a commanding 295-run victory and a 1-0 series lead.
The day-night Test in Adelaide proved to be a nightmare for Jaiswal. On the very first ball of the match, Starc angled an in-swinging delivery that trapped the left-hander, leaving him visibly dejected.
Yashasvi’s struggles continued when Starc claimed his wicket for the third time in the series.

Attempting a flick, Yashasvi ended up giving a straightforward catch to Mitchell Marsh at short midwicket. Starc celebrated with a trademark send-off, sticking his tongue out and flashing a wry smile.
The young Indian batter’s difficulties against left-arm pace became a major talking point, with Starc establishing dominance.

But Yashasvi was not one to back down.
Determined to bounce back, he returned to the pavilion, analysed his dismissals with the help of video analysts, coaches, and the captain. He resolved to overcome the Starc challenge and redeem himself in the fourth Test at Melbourne.
Yashasvi’s childhood coach Jwala Singh detailed how the 23-year-old turned his struggles into success.
“Yashasvi was upset when he kept getting out to Starc on multiple occasions. He watched his videos. He watched his videos and prepared accordingly,” Jwala told TimesofIndia.com in an exclusive interview.
“Whenever challenges come, Yashasvi sits back, thinks, and opts for video analysis. He watches the bowlers’ videos closely and tries to apply his strategies on the field accordingly. That is his character, and that’s how he bounced back at the MCG,” he added.

In the fourth Test, Yashasvi displayed remarkable maturity against Starc, even enduring persistent sledging from Sam Konstas at silly point.
Despite the distractions, Yashasvi delivered two resilient knocks, scoring 82 in the first innings and 84 in the second.
Jwala Singh believes the Australian tour will make Jaiswal a better player.
“Tours like Australia or England make you a mature cricketer. If you perform well in these conditions, the way Yashasvi did, you can handle any conditions in the world. The confidence you gain by performing in these conditions is on another level,” Jwala said.
“The crowd, booing, chants, atmosphere, pitches, and world-class bowlers — I mean, you automatically become more mature,” the coach added.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, the talented young batsman from India, has been making headlines with his impressive performances in the ongoing Australia tour. One of the key highlights of his innings has been his ability to tackle the pace and swing of Australian paceman Mitchell Starc.

In an exclusive interview with Cricket News, Jaiswal revealed the secret behind how he managed to crack the Mitchell Starc code during the series. “I have always been a keen observer of bowlers and their tendencies. I spent hours watching videos of Starc’s previous performances and analyzing his bowling patterns,” Jaiswal said.

He added, “I also worked closely with our team’s bowling coach to understand the areas where Starc is most effective and how to counter his strengths. I made a conscious effort to play him on the back foot and wait for the loose deliveries to capitalize on.”

Jaiswal’s meticulous planning and execution against Starc have paid off, as he has consistently scored runs against the Australian pace attack in the series. His ability to read the bowler’s line and length early on and adapt his game accordingly has been commendable.

As Jaiswal continues to impress with his performances Down Under, it is evident that his hard work and dedication are paying off. His success against a world-class bowler like Mitchell Starc is a testament to his talent and potential as a future star of Indian cricket.

  • ‘Underrated’ tough-guy Starc under fitness cloud

‘Underrated’ tough-guy Starc under fitness cloud

Australia are banking on Mitchell Starc living up to his standing as one of cricket’s underrated tough nuts, but the left-armer’s latest niggle could put him under a fitness cloud for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy finale.

Starc was hampered on day three of the Boxing Day Test against India by an upper-body concern. The 34-year-old bowled through pain, clearly determined not to leave Australia a bowler short midway through a match for a second consecutive Test.

The seriousness of his injury remained unclear at stumps on Saturday, but fellow quick Scott Boland was confident their new-ball spearhead would be right for a looming fourth-innings tilt at India.

“He’s okay. I think he’s just had a bit of a niggle in his back or rib, but he came out after the (tea) break and was bowling 140 (kph) so I think he’ll be fine,” Boland told reporters.

Speaking to the ABC, Boland added: “Playing a Test match is pretty hard on your body and he’s played all four Tests so far. I think he’s just a little bit stiff in his back.”

Extraordinary ‘reverse edge’ takes cake as summer’s weirdest shot

Starc is renowned for pushing through pain, notably bowling with a broken finger in the Boxing Day Test against South Africa two summers ago, an injury that would end up sidelining him for two months.

But even if he is able to soldier on in Melbourne, Australia will be loath to risk the veteran bowler if the issue lingers ahead of the Sydney Test given he has already sent down 115.2 overs through the first four Tests of the series.

Starc looked ginger when he took the second new ball on day three and then grabbed at the mid-section of his back after the first ball of his ensuing spell. He received some running repairs from Australia’s physiotherapist, though the issue continued to dog him.

A three-over burst after the break where he continued to touch the 140kph-mark underscored his resilience.

“I think he’s underrated for how tough he is,” said Boland.

“A couple of years ago here at the MCG he had a broken finger and we were planning for him not to bowl at all – and then he came out and bowled 140k swingers.

Gutsy Starc ‘didn’t want to leave the guys two men down’

“He’s someone who can play through a lot of pain.

“You can tell he’s played (93) Test matches now. As a fast bowler there’s not many Tests you play without any niggle at all. He’s someone who can still bowl the same pace even when he is really sore – which is a great trait to have.”

Starc missing the series finale in his hometown would leave the Aussies without two of their three first-choice quicks. The calf injury Josh Hazlewood suffered at the Gabba has ruled him out for the series.

The hosts have seen virtually no drop in quality with Boland filling in for Hazlewood in another strong turnout from the Victorian who dismissed key men Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant in India’s first innings.

The next rung down of their pace depth is more of an unknown.

Jhye Richardson and Sean Abbott are the reserve fast bowlers in Australia’s listed squad for the final two Tests and would be the frontrunners to replace Starc at the SCG if required.

Brendan Doggett shadowed the team through the first three Tests, while nationally-contracted speedster Lance Morris has in previous years been kept on standby specifically for Starc due to his extra pace.

Given Abbott, Doggett and Morris are all uncapped at Test level, Richardson is the most qualified given his tremendous record (11 wickets at 22.09) from the three Tests he has played.

But the last of those came three years ago during the 2021-22 Ashes. The whippy right-armer may be considered an injury risk as well given the physical challenges he has faced during his two-and-a-half-year absence from international cricket.

Richardson dislocated his shoulder giving a high-five in his Sheffield Shield return game last month. He returned to the bowling crease but even he conceded his surprise last week when he was recalled to the Test squad.

“Even a week ago, I was like, ‘I’m not really thinking about (Test cricket) just yet’,” Richardson told Fox Cricket.

“I just wanted to stay on the park and play Big Bash cricket and make sure that the body was OK and keep ramping up (the workloads) and following the processes that we’ve got in place.

“But here we are, and if there’s an opportunity, then it’s obviously really exciting.”

Mitchell Starc, one of cricket’s most fearsome fast bowlers, is often viewed as a key player in the Australian team. However, he is also one of the most underrated tough guys in the sport.

Despite consistently delivering fiery spells and intimidating batsmen with his pace and swing, Starc’s performances often go unnoticed or underappreciated. His ability to take crucial wickets and break partnerships is invaluable to the team, yet he doesn’t always receive the recognition he deserves.

Now, Starc finds himself under a fitness cloud, with concerns about his ability to stay fit and perform at his best. This has only added to the challenges he faces in proving his worth and silencing his critics.

But make no mistake, Mitchell Starc is a force to be reckoned with on the cricket field. His raw talent, aggression, and never-say-die attitude make him a true tough guy of the game, and one who should not be underestimated.

It’s time for fans and pundits alike to give Starc the credit he deserves and acknowledge him as the underrated tough guy that he truly is.

Mitchell Starc fitness update, Scott Boland on Aussie chances after day three, news, analysis

Scott Boland has confirmed strike bowler Mitchell Starc is feeling a niggle around the ribs but is confident the star quick will do his utmost to secure Australia a Boxing Day Test triumph over the next two days in Melbourne.

    Aus v India – 4th Test, Day 2 Highlights | 14:45

The left-arm fast bowler was down on pace at times on Saturday as India fought back to reach 9-358 at stumps, reducing the first innings deficit to 116 with two days remaining after Australia scored 474 on the first two days.

While Nitish Kumar Reddy continued his superb debut series by scoring a maiden Test century late on the third day, there were worrying signs for Australia regarding the fitness of Starc.

The veteran quick, who bowled brilliantly at times in the first three Tests, appeared in discomfort at times and could be seen reaching for the middle of his back after bowling. He finished the day at 0-86 from 25 overs.

Given the turnaround between the Boxing Day and Sydney Test next week, and the absence of Josh Hazlewood due to a calf injury sustained in Brisbane last week, the niggle Starc is dealing with is a concern.

But Boland is confident Starc, who looked sharper when returning to the attack after a rain delay midway through Saturday, will be able to resume the assault on India on Sunday.

“He’s okay. He just had a bit of a niggle somewhere in his back or rib, I don’t know, somewhere back there, but he came out after the break and was bowling 140km/h, so I think he’s going to be fine,” Boland said.

“I think he is underrated for how tough he is. A couple of years ago here at the MCG, he had a broken finger and we’re pretty much planning for him not to bowl at all and then he came out and bowled 140km/h swingers.

“He’s someone who can play through a lot of pain, and you can probably tell (that because) he’s played close to 90 Test matches now. And as a fast bowler, there’s not many games where you do play without any niggle at all. He’s someone who can still bowl at the same pace even when he is really sore, which is a great trait to have.”

After a late flurry of wickets sparked by Yashasvi Jaiswal’s run-out on Friday saw India start the third day on 5-164, Reddy batted beautifully to frustrate the Australians on Saturday.

His 127-run partnership with Washington Sundar, which fell just two shy of an Indian record for an eighth wicket stand by India against Australia, revived the tourists hopes of securing a draw at the very least in Melbourne.

Adding to Australia’s challenge of securing victory is the prospect the MCG pitch is unlikely to deteriorate significantly, although there was some movement before a second rain delay ended play about 5.30pm.

Quizzed as to whether the pitch will spin on Day 5, which would bring Nathan Lyon into the equation, Boland said there was still decent grass cover on the pitch.

“I’m not too sure if it’s going to spin too much more,” he said.

“I think there’s a … decent amount of grass on there, so I’m definitely hoping it spins a lot more, but I think hopefully there’ll be some variable bounce just as the Test match wicket gets a bit more tired. That’d be ideal for us as a bowling group.”

The Victorian fast bowler, who has taken 3-57 from 27 overs, still believes Australia is in a strong position to secure a victory that would give them hosts a 2-1 lead heading into the final Test in Sydney.

“We’re leading by 115 runs, so (we are) in a pretty strong position. Obviously, it could have been better, but I think that’s Test match cricket. It ebbs and flows,” he said.

“Hopefully tomorrow morning, we get that first wicket and then (we can) build on that and put on a really nice lead and see how the game plays out after that.”

But the Indians are up for the fight, Sundar declared after scoring a half-century on Saturday, as they seek to retain their hold on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Both he and Boland praised the innings produced by Reddy, saying it was a sublime effort.

“That’s something that has been instilled in all of us, that no matter what situation we are in, we’ll just fight, no matter what,” he said.

“And playing for India, especially in a ground like the MCG (on) a big occasion against Australia (in the) Boxing Day Test, we will do no matter what it takes for us to be in a good position.

“Today was definitely good today. It was very, very hard (and) I’m very, very happy for Nitish. He got an unbelievable hundred, honestly, and I’m sure this will be remembered forever.”
