Bill O’Brien teases future Penn State-Boston College series
Could a clash between two eras of Penn State football soon be coming to Happy Valley? Former Nittany Lions and current Boston College head coach Bill O’Brien says it’s a possibility.
On Wednesday’s edition of The Bill O’Brien Podcast, the one-time Penn State coach suggested that a two-game series between the Nittany Lions and Eagles could be in the early stages of discussions.
“There’s a potential, by the way, a potential of potentially a Boston College, Penn State home and home deal in a couple of years,” said O’Brien, who coached the Nittany Lions in 2012 and 2013.
If Penn State football traveled to Massachusetts, O’Brien indicated that Boston College might look to play the game at the New England Patriots’ home venue, Gillette Stadium. Located approximately 20 miles southwest of Boston in Foxborough, Gillette Stadium sits 64,628, compared to the Eagles’ current on-campus 44,500-seat Alumni Stadium.
“Maybe we could play them at Gillette,” O’Brien continued. “We’ll talk to [Patriots owner] Mr. [Robert] Kraft about that; see if he would go for that. And then play them up in Happy Valley like back in the day, remember? That was a great game back in the day.”

“The other thing that I don’t think a lot of people realize is, me and Billy O’Brien were pretty close,” James Franklin said of his predecessor in the summer of 2023. “We were on the same staff at the University of Maryland. So, I was able to talk to him probably about 10 times before taking the job to kind of have an understanding of what I was walking into in terms of the players and things like that.”
