No. 18/18 Michigan States Closes Out Non-Conference Play on Monday, Hosting Western Michigan
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State’s men’s basketball team plays its final game of the 2024 calendar year on Monday, Dec. 30, hosting in-state rival Western Michigan at the Breslin Center at 3 p.m.
The game will air live on BTN, with Jason Ross Jr. and Stephen Bardo calling all of the action. The Spartan Media Network radio call can be heard state-wide and on the web at MSUSpartans.com, with Will Tieman handling the play-by-play and Matt Steigenga serving as the color analyst, and Zach Surdenik is the studio host. The game can also be heard on channel 380 on SiriusXM and on the SiriusXM app.

“Little Marco”: what is the future US Secretary of State’s position on Ukraine
Marco Rubio, Donald Trump’s former rival in the 2016 primaries, has become an unexpected choice for the post of Secretary of State in the new US presidential administration. The Financial Times published an article analyzing Rubio’s position on major foreign policy issues, UNN reports.
Marco Rubio was born in Miami, but spent his childhood in Las Vegas, where his father worked as a bartender in a casino and his mother was a hotel housekeeper. Later, she went to work in a factory, while taking care of four children. In his youth, Rubio was fond of American football, even playing on the team at Tarquio College in Missouri. However, after quitting the sport, he transferred to a community college and later entered the University of Florida, where he received a degree in political science in 1993. In 1996, he completed his law degree at the University of Miami.
Rubio is the son of Cuban immigrants, and this has largely shaped his political career. In 2011, he was first elected to the Senate, and in 2016, he tried to run for the presidency of the United States.
However, his campaign failed, in part because of sharp attacks from Donald Trump, who called him “Little Marco.” Then Rubio did not stand aside, calling Trump a “huckster” who would sell watches on the street without inherited real estate.
Although these controversies left a mark, Trump later offered Rubio one of the key positions in his administration – Secretary of State.
The turnaround is so abrupt that even foreign allies have expressed surprise and some relief.
An individual like Rubio contrasts with the president-elect’s more controversial national security picks, such as former Fox commentator Pete Hegseth on defense and Tulsi Gabbard, the nominee for director of national intelligence, who has been criticized for her pro-Russian stance.
“To be honest, some of Trump’s nominees have made us drop our jaws – but not Rubio… He has a lot of foreign policy experience and understands the added value of strong alliances,” said a senior official from a NATO country.
In general, in the Senate, Marco Rubio became known for his tough stance on China. He has actively criticized Beijing’s policies, speaking out against the persecution of the Uighurs, the suppression of democratic protests in Hong Kong, and pressure on Taiwan. In 2020, China imposed sanctions on him because of his vocal criticism. Rubio also wrote two reports warning about the threat that China poses to the US economy and technology.
At the beginning of his career, Rubio was a strong supporter of America’s global role, calling it an “indispensable force.” However, over time, his rhetoric changed. He began to emphasize the limited resources of the United States, pointing out that the country should choose where to act.
Position on Ukraine
Rubio’s attitude toward Ukraine has also undergone a transformation. Initially, he strongly supported Ukraine’s fight against Russian aggression. However, this year he voted against additional funding for Kyiv, calling the conflict a “stalemate.”
“We want this conflict to end, and it will require some very difficult decisions,” he said.
In fact, foreign diplomats and the foreign policy establishment in Washington doubt how influential Rubio will be and how he will be able to cooperate with other more unorthodox or radical Trump appointees.
A senior official from a NATO country tempered his optimism about Rubio, saying that “a lot will depend on who his running mates are and how strong his position is on the National Security Council.

Matt Campbell on if Iowa State’s season is disappointing
ORLANDO, Fla. — Matt Campbell isn’t thinking about what could have been.
Saturday, Iowa State will play Miami in the Pop-Tarts Bowl. Wednesday afternoon, Arizona State will play Texas in the Peach Bowl as part of the first 12-team College Football Playoff.

If ISU beat ASU in the Big 12 Championship Game, it would be the Cyclones playing in the semifinals of the CFP. Instead, the Sun Devils ran the Cyclones over 49-15 in a game that might as well have been over early in the third quarter. Sure, that particular game was disappointing for Iowa State, but it’s far from how Campbell views the 2024 season.

To recap, ISU started 7-0 for the first time since 1938 and won 10 regular-season games for the first time. A walk-off victory at Iowa got the season’s momentum rolling and a win at home against Kansas State let fans finish the home season on the field. ISU advanced from a four-way tie to its second Big 12 Championship Game.

Friday, a reporter asked Campbell about the line of thinking that falling short of the CFP renders a season a disappointment.
“I mean, think about what I just said, 133 years in our school, and we have never won 10 games,” Campbell said. “We’ve been in two Big 12 Championship games, in you know, the last four years. Nobody even thought that was possible at Iowa State. To say something like that is ridiculous to be quite honest with you.”
A little over two weeks ago, Campbell signed a contract extension through 2032. The biggest reason for that is his on-field success, but part of the reason he is ISU’s winningest football coach is because he takes seriously the other aspects of the job. To Campbell, great people leaving his program is never disappointing.

“We’ll have 20 seniors that are going to leave and they are going to go be great fathers, husbands,” Campbell said. “But the one thing they are going able to do is they are going to be great leaders of people because of their experience and what they have been accomplished in the season.”

ORLANDO, Fla. — New contract, same vision.
Amid all the confounding changes in college football, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell’s leaning into his program’s long-standing strength: Stability.
“I know I’m not perfect, and I know Iowa State’s not always perfect in terms of how we play football,” said Campbell, who earlier this month agreed to a new, eight-year contract that extends through 2032. “But I think how we’ve tried to play, and the spirit that our kids have played with, and the ability to give our football program success here, and something for this fan base to believe in every Saturday — I’m really proud of that.”
Terms of the new deal will be disclosed at a later date, but it’s clear that Campbell, director of athletics Jamie Pollard, and Iowa State University president Wendy Wintersteen share the same long-term goals for an 18th-ranked Cyclones team (10-3) that will play No. 13 Miami (10-2) at 2:30 p.m. Saturday (ABC) in the Pop-Tarts Bowl at Camping World Stadium.
“Just getting back home and playing in Florida is a big thing,” said ISU’s second-team All-Big 12 cornerback Jontez Williams, who grew up about two hours north of Orlando in Starke, Fla. “I’m just ready for the moment.”
Williams and his compatriots will try to slow down the Hurricanes’ scoring offense, which leads the FBS at 44.2 points per game. He’ll listen intently to veteran defensive coordinator Jon Heacock and his position coach, Hank Poteat, in order to make that possible.
And speaking of stability — Heacock’s the rock-steady example of it among Campbell’s staff, as he’s been with him for 10-plus seasons, first at Toledo, then at ISU.
“When we walked into this place nine years ago, (our goal) was we wanted to make this place special,” said Heacock, whose defense will be down one starter because junior defensive end Tyler Onyedim unexpectedly entered the transfer portal recently. “We wanted to make this place different than it’s ever been, and we’ve worked really hard to do that. And for me, the best thing that could happen would be for these seniors who’ve led this team these last couple years (to go out with a win). They certainly deserve everything they’ve got. We didn’t handle our business (in the Big 12 title game), and we’ve got one more chance. We’ve got one more chance to handle it the right way and it’s gonna take everything we’ve got with the team that we’re playing against.”
But first the Cyclones will fully lean into that internal stability, which exists on both sides of the ball. First-year offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser’s been a staffer back to the Toledo days, and defensive line coach Eli Rasheed’s been along for the ride with Campbell his entire head coaching career. So the continuity is strong, which allows ISU to seek out prospective players who “fit” the program, whether as developmental players or via the portal.
Campbell depends on the former more than the latter, because at his core, he considers himself a teacher and mentor above all else. That’s why his vision never changes even as college football experiences seismic shifts and looming roster size limits. He’s found his niche — and he’s thriving within it.
For the past several seasons, at least.
“No matter what, or when, it’s time to take a step back from coaching, I feel like I can look myself in the mirror and say, ‘You know what? We at least tried every single day we walked in here to make everybody proud of what this program was about,’” Campbell said. “And we tried to do it the right way.”

Washington State hiring South Dakota State’s Jimmy Rogers as next head coach: Sources
South Dakota State head coach Jimmy Rogers is expected to become the new head coach at Washington State, sources briefed on the search told The Athletic Saturday.
The 37-year-old Arizona native and former Jackrabbits linebacker led South Dakota State to its second consecutive FCS national title in 2023, going 15-0 in his first season as head coach replacing John Stiegelmeier and winning the Eddie Robinson Award, honoring the nation’s top FCS coach. South Dakota State carried a 29-game winning streak into the 2024 season and finished 12-3, losing to North Dakota State in the FCS semifinals.
Before getting promoted to the head coaching spot at his alma mater, Rogers, a captain on the Jackrabbits’ first FCS playoff team in 2009, played a key role in South Dakota State’s 2022 national title, directing the nation’s top rushing defense as as Jackrabbits defensive coordinator.
Rogers will replace Jake Dickert, who left Washington State earlier this month to become head coach at Wake Forest, replacing Dave Clawson. The Cougars finished the 2024 season 8-5 after losing to Syracuse in the Holiday Bowl on Friday night.
