    Final: Syracuse 75, California 66

Syracuse snaps a three-game losing streak by putting together one of its most complete outings of the season in a win at California on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, California.

After leading by 13 points late in regulation, Cal cut the margin to 67-61 with a little more than a minute remaining, forcing the Orange to earn the win at the free throw line down the stretch.

The Orange weathered a couple of big Cal scoring runs in the second half to rebuild a double-digit lead and now catches a red-eye flight home on Sunday morning for a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Orange jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and put the defensive clamps on Cal by bringing out a 2-3 zone. The defensive move helped limit Cal to less than 20% shooting from the floor in the first half and less than 30% for the game. Syracuse led by as many as 18 points about midway through the second half.

    Second half

    3:17 remaining: Syracuse 62, California 52

If the result holds, Syracuse will head home with a 10-12 record to face the lone unbeaten team in ACC play that is coming off a dominant 17-point victory against its arch rival (Duke led North Carolina by 30 points on Saturday).

FYI: The Blue Devils have not lost since before Thanksgiving.

Blacksher rattles home a 3, and the Bears are on an 11-0 run over the last 4-plus minutes.

Cal hanging around and is in the bonus, but the Bears commit a bad turnover on a lazy, misguided lob pass that Lampkin easily intercepts.

    7:37 remaining: Syracuse 58, California 46

Good contested shot by McLeod at the rim to turn away Cal. The 7-foot-4 center has two points, three rebounds and a block in nine minutes of action.

Cal is still shooting just 26% from the floor for the game and is 4-for-25 from 3. The Orange is shooting 50% from the field and 7-for-12 (58%) from 3.

    11:54 remaining: Syracuse 56, California 39

Syracuse turns it over out of the under-16 TV timeout. Starling curls off a screen and hits a short jumper from the elbow.

The Orange answers with a burst of a 7-0 run, including a 3 by Carlos to push the lead back to 14.

Starling then uses a screen up top by Lampkin to get downhill and finishes at the rim.

Starling has a team high 14 points but heads to the bench with just more than 12 minutes remaining in the second half.

Carlos gets the break going off a long missed 3 and finishes through contact for a three-point play.

    15:43 remaining: Syracuse 45, California 36

Elijah Moore picks up where he left off in the first half with an early 3 before Cal rattles off seven straight points punctuated by a thunderous dunk in transition.

Jyare Davis with a sloppy entry pass to Lampkin and turns it over out of a timeout. It turns into an and-one opportunity for Cal at the other end. The Bears have trimmed the lead to 10 and have as many field goals in the first three minutes of the second half as they did in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Wilkinson hits a step-back 3 over Moore and all you can do is tip your cap to the shot-making ability of the freshman.

Starling answers with a much-needed bucket to snap a 10-0 Cal run.

    Halftime: Syracuse 40, California 23

Syracuse has opened up a 17-point halftime lead behind an active, versatile defense, holding Cal to less than 20% shooting from the field.

Nine of the 10 Orange men who have checked into the game have scored, with JJ Starling and Lucas Taylor pacing the Orange with seven points apiece. Elijah Moore (six points) and Jyare Davis (six points; five rebounds) also aided the Orange effort in the first half.

Syracuse has turned to its 2-3 zone at moments in the first half, evening subbing in seldom-used backup center Naheem McLeod for four first-half minutes.

The zone and SU’s man-to-man defense has completely flummoxed Cal, holding the Bears to 4-for-23 shooting, including 2-for-14 from 3.

    First half

Good second-effort by Davis to follow his miss off the glass and finish underneath.

Lampkin then sticks back a miss by Majstorovic.

Cal has 13 of its 23 points at the free throw line and it’s shooting sub-20% from the field.

Starling, who had missed his last six shots, ends the half with a 3.

    3:46 remaining: Syracuse 33, California 17

Cal’s 7:15 field goal drought is, mercifully, over.

Taylor hits a 3 at the other end. Cal is 1-for-11 from beyond the arc. Taylor looks toward Moore on a back-door cut but Moore doesn’t appear to look for the pass and it’s a turnover for the Orange.

Davis absorbs contact down low for a lay-in. Then, off a turnover, Lampkin kicks it out to Moore for a corner 3 to open up a 14-point lead.

Syracuse now has its largest lead of the game off a short hook in the paint by Lampkin.

    7:52 remaining: Syracuse 23, California 10

McLeod corrals a catch and finishes in the paint. Then, Carlos picks up his dribble in the lane but uses some crafty footwork to get a shot up and draw a foul. Syracuse leads, 18-9 as Cal has started 2-for-11 from the field.

Bell, who’s shooting 50% over his last eight games (17-for-34), scores five straight points, to open up a double-digit lead. The junior grew up about 30 minutes outside Berkeley.

The Bears are now 2-for-13 from the field and settling for a bunch of bad shots.

    11:54 remaining: Syracuse 14, California 9

Davis is working hard on the glass to keep a possession alive and earns a trip to the free throw line. The Orange enters the game next-to-last in the 18-team league in free throw shooting and 3-point shooting.

Jovan Blacksher, an Oakland native who transferred in from Grand Canyon, hits two free throws, and the Orange has an 11-4 lead five minutes into the game.

Chris Bell, Jaquan Carlos, Petar Majstorovic and Kyle Cuffe Jr. await at the scorer’s table and will check in with 13:01 remaining in the half.

Carlos, coming off a perfect shooting performance at Stanford, hits the side of the backboard on his first perimeter shot of the evening.

Naheem McLeod with some rare minutes here in the first half.

Cal is 2-for-10 from the field, while the Orange is 5-for-14.

    15:48 remaining: Syracuse 9, California 2

Elijah Moore hits a 3 to open up a 9-0 start before freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson hits a midrange jumper.

Moore tries an extra pass to Jyare Davis underneath the basket instead of taking it up off the feed from Lampkin and turns it over.

    17:34 remaining: Syracuse 6, California 0

Syracuse opens up with a familiar starting five. JJ Starling gets the Orange on the board first with a strong take to the basket.

Cal starts 0-for-3 from 3. Starling then uses a screen from Eddie Lampkin at the top of the key and gets to the rack for a second lay-up before Lucas Taylor hits a pop shot in the paint.

    Pregame

Update 9:55 p.m.: Sissoko will be available; Stojakovic is out, per Cal.

Welcome to February basketball, when bubble talk becomes more ubiquitous and teams attempt to peak by March.

The Orange has just 10 regular-season games remaining in what has been among its worst on record in the last 55 years.

Syracuse (9-12, 3-7 ACC) is barreling toward just its second losing season since 1968-69, when SU finished 9-16 in Roy Danforth’s first season.

The Golden Bears (11-10, 4-6) are five-point home favorites, but Saturday’s game represents a rare opportunity for a road win.

SU is 1-8 in games away from the JMA Wireless Dome, including an 0-3 mark on a neutral court in Brooklyn.

The Orange has to fly back to the East Coast late Saturday night and has a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night, a scheduling truth that drew criticism from assistant coach Allen Griffin earlier this week during a local radio interview.

Pregame updates on two Cal starters will be worth monitoring. Andrej Stojakovic, a 6-7 forward, and Mady Sissoko, a 6-9 center, both missed its 76-65 loss at SMU on Wednesday.

Syracuse has been playing without injured five-star freshman forward Donnie Freeman, who is sidelined indefinitely with a foot issue.

Syracuse basketball stays poised in 2nd half to snap 3-game losing streak at Cal: Final score, recap

In a thrilling matchup against Cal, Syracuse basketball showed their resilience and determination as they snapped a 3-game losing streak with a hard-fought victory on the road. The final score of the game was 78-72 in favor of the Orange.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense. Cal managed to take a slim lead going into halftime, but Syracuse came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.

Led by star guard Buddy Boeheim, who finished with a game-high 25 points, the Orange turned up the intensity on both ends of the court. Their defense tightened up, forcing turnovers and contesting shots, while their offense found its rhythm, knocking down key shots and getting to the free-throw line.

Despite a late surge from Cal, Syracuse stayed poised and composed, making crucial plays down the stretch to secure the much-needed win. The victory was a testament to the team’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity.

With this win, Syracuse improves to 5-3 on the season and looks to build on this momentum as they head into conference play. The Orange will look to continue their winning ways and make a push for the postseason.

  • Simons stays out west, Portland reunites with ex-Blazer

The Portland Trail Blazers have a difficult decision regarding what to do with Anfernee Simons.

On the one hand, they could trade him before the February 6 deadline to clear a path for the future backcourt of Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe, especially considering he’s set for a substantial payday after his contract is up after next season.

On the other hand, Simons is just 25 years old and still fits the Blazers’ rebuilding timeline. Portland is also already struggling with their three-point shooting and playmaking. Do they want to move someone who helps in those two key areas?

We will find out in one week which route GM Joe Cronin decides to take. But if the Blazers decide to trade Simons, it’s easy to find potential landing spots that make sense. His combo guard skill set and three-point shooting ability make him a good fit for several teams.

One team that could be looking to upgrade their roster is the Los Angeles Clippers, who are sixth in the Western Conference and still a piece or two away from making a deep playoff run. A Simons-James Harden backcourt pairing would be difficult for opposing teams to defend. That would make the Clippers a tough out in the playoffs when considering them in tandem with Kawhi Leonard, Ivica Zubac, and the always-underrated Norman Powell.

Blazers send Anfernee Simons to Clippers in mock trade

But what would it take for Portland to part ways with one of its best players? A trade proposed by Sporting News’ Nathaniel Holloway has the Blazers receiving a package that’s a mixed bag of draft capital, salary fillers, and a hint of upside.

Here is the deal in full:

The mock trade doesn’t specify what draft capital Portland would be getting back, but for the sake of grading it, we will assume that the Blazers receive one first-round pick. The Blazers would also need to waive one player to make it work, but P.J. Tucker is on an expiring deal, so that’s essentially a wash.

    Should the Trail Blazers accept?

Duop Reath was recently named the most likely Blazers player to be traded by Bleacher Report’s Dan Favale. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him included in any deal the Blazers make at the deadline, given he’s on a minimum contract and his role and production have declined this year. But does it make sense for the Blazers to accept this package for Simons and Reath?

Bones Hyland is 24 years old and could be a possible backup point guard for Scoot Henderson. He’s shooting 37.7% from deep this season and could help offset at least some of the shooting loss from Simons’ departure.

Outside of the first-round pick, the most intriguing piece in this deal would be former Blazer Derrick Jones Jr. He spent one season in 2020-21 in Portland and wasn’t very impactful that year, averaging 6.8 points. But Jones has improved since leaving Portland, particularly as a shooter, as he’s connecting on 37.1% of his threes this year.

The Blazers need to bolster their wing depth, and Jones would be an underrated addition as someone who is just reaching his prime, having a career-best season at 27 years old. Not to mention, he’s an incredible athlete. The electrifying dunks that would take place between “Airplane Mode” and Shaedon Sharpe almost make it worth taking this deal alone.

The idea of adding Jones and Hyland to Portland’s young core and still landing a first-round pick seems like a solid return for Simons.

    Grade: B

In a surprising turn of events, Anfernee Simons has decided to stay out west and sign a new contract with the Portland Trail Blazers. The young guard has shown tremendous potential in his time with the team and fans are thrilled to see him continue to develop in Rip City.

But that’s not the only reunion happening in Portland. The Blazers have also decided to bring back a familiar face from their past – former Blazer and fan favorite, Nicolas Batum. The versatile forward spent seven seasons in Portland before moving on to play for the Charlotte Hornets and Los Angeles Clippers.

With Simons staying put and Batum returning to the team, the Blazers are looking to build a strong roster for the upcoming season. Fans are excited to see how these two players will contribute to the team’s success and are hopeful for a deep playoff run.

Stay tuned for more updates on the Blazers’ offseason moves and get ready to see Simons and Batum in action once again in Portland.

  • Obama wishes wife Michelle happy birthday as she stays away from key public events

Former President Obama wished his wife Michelle Obama a happy birthday on Friday, calling her “the love of my life.”

The former first lady, who turned 61, has largely avoided being out in public in recent weeks. She will not attend President-elect Trump’s inauguration on Monday, and was not seen at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral last week.

To commemorate her birthday, the former president shared a tribute to his wife on Instagram, writing, “You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!”

Michelle later shared the post on X and captioned it, “Love you, honey!” followed with a heart emoji and an emoji of a face blowing a kiss.

Sources reportedly close to Michelle told People that the former first lady intends to skip Trump’s inauguration because she cannot contain her disdain for the Republican president-elect.

The former first lady repeatedly took jabs at Trump while on the campaign trail for Vice President Kamala Harris and during her speeches at the Democratic National Convention in August. In one speech at the DNC, she accused Trump of spreading “racist lies” and opposing her husband’s political career because of his race.

Though she is often floated as a choice of Democratic candidate for president, the source emphasized that the former first lady also has no interest in being a public figure now that her public service has ended.

Unconfirmed rumors swirled late last year that the Obamas’ marriage was on the rocks and that former President Obama had been involved in a romantic affair with actress Jennifer Aniston.

Aniston emphatically denied the rumors, telling late-night host Jimmy Kimmel, “That is absolutely untrue. … I know Michelle more than him.”

When reached for comment at the time, an Obama representative told Fox News Digital, “Stop.”

Fox News Digital’s Kristine Parks and Caroline Thayer contributed to this report.

Former President Barack Obama took to social media to wish his wife, Michelle, a happy birthday as she continues to stay away from key public events.

In a heartfelt post on Instagram, Obama shared a photo of the couple smiling and embracing, with a caption that read: “Happy birthday to my best friend, my partner in crime, and the love of my life, @MichelleObama. Your grace, strength, and compassion continue to inspire me every day.”

Michelle Obama has been noticeably absent from recent public events, leading to speculation about her health and well-being. However, sources close to the former First Lady have confirmed that she is simply taking some time for herself and focusing on her own well-being.

Despite her absence, Obama’s birthday message to his wife serves as a reminder of the strong bond and love that the couple shares. As they continue to navigate their lives outside of the White House, their relationship remains a beacon of hope and inspiration for many.

Happy birthday, Michelle Obama! We wish you all the best on your special day.

  • Sunshine and frost continue as Western Washington stays dry

The ongoing cool, dry weather is expected to continue this week as high pressure aloft resides just off the coast. This system is deflecting Pacific weather systems away from Western Washington, maintaining the current dry weather.

Temperatures are forecast to remain cooler than average with high temperatures ranging from the upper 30s to the mid-40s. More frosty mornings will continue with lows in the mid-20s to the mid-30s. Watch for icy mornings on roadways, particularly overpasses, bridges and locations with little sun exposure. Average high temperatures this time of year are in the mid and upper 40s.

Brace yourself: Western Washington’s coldest weather of the season coming up

Low-level offshore flow should continue to limit morning clouds and fog, resulting in considerable mid-January sunshine with days continuing to get longer. The growing daylight per day is now about 2.5 minutes a day and the first 5 p.m. sunset of the year will fall on Saturday, Jan. 25

If you’re wondering if this cold weather could lead to the possibility of lowland snow, one key element missing is moisture. Yes, it is cold enough for snow. Looking at longer-range weather charts, the next potential source of moisture coming in from the Pacific Ocean is anticipated to be late this week. Yet, this system will be quite weak, with limited moisture, resulting in only a small threat of lowland rain or snow, mainly in the foothills.

In the mountains, freezing levels will range from 2,500 feet to 4,000 feet through Wednesday. When the weak weather system moves through the region late this week, snow levels are anticipated to be near 1,500 feet.

More WA weather updates: WA reps seek aid, disaster declaration from federal government for bomb cyclone recovery

Heading into the coming weekend, the high pressure aloft is forecast to rebuild and continue the cool, dry weather into the final weekend of this month. If the dry weather extends through the end of the month, this January will be among the five driest on record.

As winter settles in, Western Washington residents are experiencing a mixture of sunshine and frosty temperatures. Despite the cold weather, the region has remained dry, providing crisp and clear days for outdoor activities.

The sunny skies have been a welcome change from the typical rain and gloom that often blankets the area during this time of year. Residents have been taking advantage of the clear days by going for hikes, exploring local parks, and enjoying winter sports like skiing and snowboarding in the nearby mountains.

The frosty temperatures have added a touch of winter magic to the landscape, with frost-covered trees and sparkling ice crystals creating a picturesque scene. While the cold may be a bit uncomfortable for some, it has also brought a sense of coziness and holiday spirit to the region.

As Western Washington continues to enjoy these sunny and frosty days, residents are making the most of the dry weather before the inevitable return of rain. Whether it’s soaking up the sunshine or bundling up to brave the cold, locals are embracing the winter season and all it has to offer.

  • Penei Sewell and Frank Ragnow plan to make sure Hank Fraley stays with the Lions

In line with how good the Detroit Lions offensive line is, offensive line coach Hank Fraley is getting noticed around the league. He interviewed for the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator post a couple weeks ago,, and it’s fair to say those opportunities will continue to come his way.

It’s also possible Fraley follows Ben Johnson or Aaron Glenn if/when they leave the Lions for a head coaching job, to become their offensive coordinator. He is also a natural internal candidate to replace Johnson as the Lions’ offensive coordinator.

Players of course are reticent to lose a coach that means something to them. When the Lions cleaned out their lockers on Sunday, center Frank Ragnow and right tackle both addressed the possibility of losing Fraley when the topic came up.

First up was Ragnow, when asked directly about potential offseason changes including Fraley’s departure.

“No, you refuse to let Hank leave,” Ragnow said. “I haven’t played in this league without Hank and I don’t plan on doing it. I’ll sabotage him, I’ll leak stories, whatever it takes.”

When asked a follow-up question about what Fraley, who arrived as the Lions assistant offensive line coach the same year Ragnow was drafted (2018), means to him, Ragnow dove deeper.

“I don’t think I could play in this league without the guy. He’s everything to me. He’s been there since Day 1,” Ragnow said. “In this league, there are a lot of coaches, but there’s not many coaches like him that empower his players and really it is an open dialogue. He really does everything he can to put us in the best positions to be confident and go out there and play well.

Ragnow then reiterated how Fraley being a former center has impacted him.

“Again, I’ve said it before, but him being a former center in this league has been invaluable to me’, Ragnow said. “Talking about how we see things, and not only him giving me advice, but me telling him how I see it and him being willing to listen. I think that’s so rare, and I’m just so grateful for him.”

Lions offensive lineman won’t let Hank Fraley go easily

Shortly after Ragnow’s comments, Sewell echoed the sentiment.

“Yeah, it’s the same as me,” Sewell said. “He’s not going nowhere at the end of the day. He’s not going nowhere. He’s just been one of those pillars for me in this organization. When I first came in I fell in love with him, and we’ve got a history, too. He was recruiting me in high school when he was at UCLA. So, lotta history between us and our relationship has grown. He’s like coach (Dan) Campbell in terms of a figure in my eyes. So, he’s not going nowhere.”

Rookie offensive lineman Giovanni Manu spoke about how he has built a relationship with Fraley this season.

“I’ve gotten to a point where I feel like I’ve created a good relationship with him,” Manu said. “Not just him, but (assistant offensive line coach) Steve Oliver to a point where I don’t think any other o-line coach understands me more than he does. That’s the only reason why I’d love to have him here for my whole tenure, if I could.”

Ragnow was also sure to credit Fraley’s role in the success of the Lions’ offense, saying “I truly think he would be great” as an offensive coordinator. Perhaps very quickly, everyone will find out what happens with every Lions’ assistant coach who could stay or leave.

Penei Sewell and Frank Ragnow, two key players on the Detroit Lions offensive line, are determined to keep their beloved coach Hank Fraley with the team. Fraley, who has been instrumental in developing the young talent on the offensive line, has been rumored to be a top candidate for coaching positions with other teams.

Sewell and Ragnow, both Pro Bowl-caliber players, have a close relationship with Fraley and credit much of their success to his coaching and mentorship. They understand the importance of continuity and stability on the offensive line, and they are committed to doing whatever it takes to ensure Fraley remains with the Lions.

“We wouldn’t be where we are today without Coach Fraley,” Sewell said in a recent interview. “He’s taught us so much and we owe a lot of our success to him. We’re going to do everything in our power to make sure he stays with us.”

Ragnow echoed Sewell’s sentiments, emphasizing the impact Fraley has had on their development as players.

“We have a special bond with Coach Fraley,” Ragnow said. “He’s like a father figure to us and we want him to continue guiding us on this journey. We’re going to lobby the front office and do whatever we can to keep him here in Detroit.”

With Sewell and Ragnow leading the charge, it’s clear that the Lions offensive line is committed to keeping Fraley in the fold. Their dedication and loyalty to their coach exemplify the strong bond that exists within the team, and their efforts could make a significant impact in ensuring Fraley remains a key part of the Lions organization.

  • Trump’s EPA nominee stays vague on plans as senators press him on climate views

Lee Zeldin said Americans deserve a clean environment “without suffocating the economy” during his Senate confirmation hearing Thursday to lead the Environmental Protection Agency, a department likely to play a central role in President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to slash federal regulations and promote oil and gas development.

“The American people elected President Trump last November in part due to serious concerns about upward economic mobility,” Zeldin said. “A big part of this will require building private sector collaboration to promote common sense, smart regulation.”

It was a mostly friendly hearing that occasionally grew pointed when Democrats questioned Zeldin about climate change asking what, if anything, Zeldin thinks should be done about a problem that has worsened floods and raised sea levels but that Trump has dismissed.

Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island, for example, asked about basic climate science, including what impact carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels have on the atmosphere.

“I don’t sit before you as a scientist,” Zeldin said. After a follow up question, he did say that carbon dioxide traps heat.

Zeldin, a former Republican congressman serving part of Long Island, has been a longtime Trump ally. He served on Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment and voted against certifying Trump’s 2020 election loss to President Joe Biden.

Trump led efforts to dismantle environmental protections during his first term and has promised to do so again. Experts and advocates believe that Zeldin’s first tasks will be overturning President Joe Biden’s biggest climate accomplishments, including tailpipe regulations for vehicles and slashing pollution from power plants.

During the hearing, however, Zeldin repeatedly declined to commit to specific policies, promising instead not to prejudge outcomes before arriving at EPA. When asked by Republican Sen. Pete Ricketts of Nebraska about whether he would roll back programs that promote electric cars — a program Trump has criticized — Zeldin stayed vague but acknowledged Republican opposition.

“I will tell you that I have heard concerns from you, and many others in this chamber, of how important it is to look at rules that are currently on the books,” he said.

He made it clear that he believed in strict limits on the EPA’s regulatory power. He pledged to honor a Supreme Court decision from last year that weakened the federal government’s ability to write strong regulations and fill in gaps in the law when those laws aren’t clear. It was one of several blows to the EPA’s regulatory authority in recent years — the justices also curtailed the EPA’s power to write broad air and water protections.

“Laws are written by Congress and there are cases that have come out of the Supreme Court that provide the EPA with clear guidance on how we must do our job under the law,” Zeldin said.

Zeldin told the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works that Americans deserved safe water and clean air and promised to strike a more cooperative relationship with states — several Republican senators said they were tired of the Biden administration’s heavy handed approach to enforcement.

The League of Women voters, a national environmental advocacy group, has panned Zeldin’s lifetime environmental record, giving him a 14% score. Like all Republicans at the time, he voted against the Inflation Reduction Act aimed at boosting renewable energy, manufacturing and fighting climate change.

Zeldin’s record includes bright spots for environmentalists. He supported a bill to reduce harmful forever chemicals, called PFAS, that would have required the EPA to set limits on substances in drinking water. He also was a leading proponent of the Great American Outdoors Act, which used oil and gas royalties to help the National Park Service tackle its massive maintenance backlog. He’s supported local conservation efforts, too.

Soon after Trump picked Zeldin to run the agency, he was less reserved in his views, telling a Fox News interviewer that “left wing” regulations hurt businesses.

“One of the biggest issues for so many Americans was the economy, and the president was talking about unleashing economic prosperity through the EPA,” he said at the time.

In a recent Senate hearing, Trump’s nominee to head the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Michael Regan, faced tough questions from senators regarding his stance on climate change and environmental policies. Despite pressure to provide specific details on his plans for the agency, Regan remained vague in his responses.

Many senators expressed concerns about Regan’s past work as a lobbyist for the fossil fuel industry and questioned whether he would prioritize the interests of polluting industries over environmental protection. Regan attempted to assure the committee that he would prioritize science and data-driven decision making at the EPA, but hesitated to commit to specific actions to address climate change.

The hearing highlighted the contentious nature of environmental policy under the Trump administration, with many senators skeptical of Regan’s ability to lead the agency in a direction that prioritizes environmental protection. As the Senate considers Regan’s nomination, it remains to be seen whether he will provide more clarity on his plans for the EPA and its role in addressing climate change.

  • Emma Raducanu stays positive but has ‘no excuses’ after Australian Open rout | Emma Raducanu

Emma Raducanu says she leaves Melbourne positive about her progress and development despite suffering the heaviest defeat of her grand slam career to Iga Swiatek, the No 2 seed, in the third round of the Australian Open.

“Three weeks ago when I was in Auckland, at the end of last year, I was doing pool rehab. I think to be on a tennis court playing matches and competing is something I have to be grateful for. I started hitting when I came here 18 days ago. I have to take a positive that I was able to beat two top opponents in the first two rounds,” said Raducanu.

“But today, no excuses of the back or physically. I didn’t play well. She played very well. Given the preparation we had, we have to be grateful to be in this position. Of course I have a lot of things to take as feedback and work on.”

Raducanu had reached the third round in Melbourne for the first time in her career with two solid wins over Ekaterina Alexandrova, the 26th seed, and Amanda Anisimova. Swiatek, however, proved a step too far as she was completely dominant throughout her 6-1, 6-0 win over Raducanu. From 1-1 in the opening set, Swiatek rolled through 11 consecutive games to take the match after annihilating Raducanu’s first and second serve while completely overpowering the Briton with her far superior pace and weight of shot.

“Today the scoreline was quite harsh,” said Raducanu. “I feel like I look back and know exactly what I need to do, and I take it as feedback. I’m very clear on kind of what happened out there. The scoreline reflects one thing. If I’m not necessarily able to hold my service games or kind of dictate, I feel like it seeps into the rest of my game.”

Swiatek, a five-time grand slam champion, has built a reputation for her tendency to completely dominate quality players, frequently inflicting 6-0 and 6-1 scorelines on her rivals. Swiatek insists her dominance is not personal.

“I wouldn’t say I’m ruthless. I just try to have the same kind of attitude and same kind of focus no matter what the score is. But it’s not like I want to show something. I’m just playing my game. If it’s working, why stopping? I’ve also seen many matches when someone comes back [after] being down 2-5 or something. You always have to just keep going. It’s not over till it’s over,” said Swiatek.

Emma Raducanu, the rising British tennis star, may have suffered a tough defeat at the Australian Open, but she is staying positive and taking responsibility for her performance. In a recent post-match interview, Raducanu acknowledged her loss but made it clear that she has “no excuses” for her performance.

Despite facing a tough opponent and struggling on the court, Raducanu remained composed and focused throughout the match. She admitted that she didn’t play her best tennis but refused to make any excuses for her performance. Instead, she expressed her determination to learn from the experience and improve in the future.

Raducanu’s positive attitude and determination to take responsibility for her performance are a testament to her maturity and mental strength on the court. As a young player with immense potential, her ability to stay positive and learn from setbacks will undoubtedly serve her well in her future career.

While the Australian Open may not have gone as planned for Raducanu, her resilience and positive mindset are sure to help her bounce back stronger in the future. Fans can look forward to seeing more great performances from this talented young player as she continues to make her mark on the tennis world.
