NFL keeps taking baby steps toward full embrace of a sky judge
For the past 25 years, the NFL’s approach to expanding the replay-review process has gone like this: Wait for a non-reviewable situation to create a controversy, and then expand replay to cover it in the future.
This bit-by-bit approach has accelerated in recent years, with replay assist providing a more efficient and expedient way to make real-time fixes without the delay of a full-blown replay review.
Now, as the NFL approaches the offseason with a plan to add to the replay function currently non-reviewable plays like facemask calls and unnecessary roughness for quarterback slides, someone needs to take a step back and ask the obvious question.
Why not use it for everything?
Replay review and replay assist helps to smooth out the disconnect between the things that the officials see at full speed with the naked eye (while also trying not to be trampled) and the things everyone else sees on 4K flatscreens.
The solution is simple. Put a member of the officiating crew in the booth and have that person collaborate with the on-field officials based on things that can be seen via video and missed by the folks who are intermingled with the players. It would be a full member of the crew, wearing black and white stripes and regularly captured in the broadcast. The person knows the rules. The person has worked on the field for multiple games. The person can direct flags to be dropped or picked up, and to rectify any other mistakes made by folks who, despite doing their best, can’t see everything.
And, yes, the entire replay process cries out for more transparency. The UFL has perfected it. The NFL still shuns even the suggestion of it.
At a time when more and more people think the NFL is rigged (it’s not), shining a light on the conversations between the replay booth and the referee will enhance the integrity of and public confidence in the game of professional football — especially at a time when the NFL is stuffing millions in its pockets from gambling sponsorships without reinvesting enough of that money to ensure the highest degree of accuracy in the calls made and not made.
Maybe the league is getting there, one annual meeting at a time. At some point, the ongoing expansion of replay review and replay assist will prompt someone to realize that everything should be reviewable.
Hopefully, the league will get there sooner than later. Ideally, it’ll happen in March.
The NFL has been making small strides toward implementing a sky judge in games, and it’s becoming increasingly clear that the league is moving closer to fully embracing this concept. For those unfamiliar with the term, a sky judge is an additional official who is stationed in the press box and has the authority to review and overturn on-field calls in real-time. This role is designed to provide an extra layer of officiating to ensure that the correct calls are made and to prevent egregious errors from impacting the outcome of a game.
While the NFL has been hesitant to fully commit to the idea of a sky judge, there have been some recent developments that suggest a shift in mindset. During the 2020 season, the league experimented with adding an official known as a “senior technology advisor” to assist with replay reviews. This move was seen as a step toward eventually incorporating a sky judge into regular-season games.
Additionally, the NFL has reportedly been discussing the possibility of implementing a sky judge on a permanent basis in the future. The league has recognized the benefits of having an additional set of eyes on the field and understands the importance of getting calls right, especially in crucial moments of a game.
While the NFL may not be ready to fully embrace a sky judge just yet, the fact that the league is taking baby steps toward this concept is a positive sign. As technology continues to advance and officiating standards evolve, it’s only a matter of time before a sky judge becomes a permanent fixture in NFL games.

Cupich steps out on immigration
Long before streaming video games became an $8 billion dollar industry, a group of World of Warcraft players in 2005 created probably the first online viral video to feature a hilarious video game scenario.
Way back then, the world met Leeroy Jenkins.
In the viral video, a clean-language version of which is embedded here, a team of World of Warcraft players stood virtually together to craft exactingly a battle plan, which would enable them to procure a piece of in-game armor, for a teammate named Leeroy Jenkins.
In a highly detailed discussion, teammates planned exactly how they’d attack a position, even crunching numbers to assess their probability of success.
While they talked, Leeroy was apparently away from his computer preparing a snack. When he returned, apparently impervious to his teammates’ detailed work, he told them with enthusiasm: “Alright, let’s do this!”
With that, Leeroy charged his character into the battle, shouting “Leeeeeroy Jenkinnnns” as a battle cry.
His teammates reluctantly followed, the plans were never used, and all were mowed down by the in-game monsters.
Leeroy Jenkins became a meme, and a metaphor for anyone who levels carefully laid plans, rushing headlong into a situation, and assuring almost certain failure for those following behind him.
—
To some Catholics this week, Cardinal Blase Cupich may be on the verge of becoming the Leeroy Jenkins of the U.S. episcopal conference — at least when it comes to dealing with the Trump administration, on the volatile issue of immigration.
On Inauguration Day, four years ago, Cupich found himself at odds with the leadership of the USCCB, when conference president Archbishop Jose Gomez of Los Angeles issued a statement warning that the incoming administration’s agenda would advance “moral evils” on several fronts.
The statement was controversial even before it was published. The Holy See’s Secretariat of State attempted to curtail it before release, and Cupich led a small group of bishops opposing the “ill-considered statement” and criticizing alleged “internal institutional failures” which saw the statement go out at all.
At the heart of Cupich’s concern was that it would set a tone of negativity between the bishops and Biden, effectively preemptively preventing collaboration on the issues where it was possible, and effective advocacy where it could be accomplished.
But while Cupich had a few supporters, a much larger number of bishops expressed support for Gomez’ efforts to speak as the leader of their conference.
Despite that, Cupich explained in subsequent statements that a univocal statement, as he saw it, undermined the good of episcopal collegiality in dealing with the administration as a body.
Later on in Biden’s administration, Cupich and his close collaborators urged an approach to politicians that focused on building common ground, finding areas of common cause, and building from them. That, Cupich and collaborators argued, could most effectively allow the Church’s voice to be effectively heard, and the teachings of the Gospel to impact policy.
It does not appear Cupich is taking the same approach with regard to the incoming Trump administration, and especially the president’s plans for broadening deportation targets beyond the groups Biden’s administration focused on, mainly people with criminal records or deemed national security threats.
In Jan. 19 remarks at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, Cupich took big swings at the administration, calling Trump’s plans “profoundly disturbing,” and “an affront to the dignity of all people and communities … deny[ing] the legacy of what it means to be an American.”
The cardinal seems keen to take the lead on the issue, and has already been framed in the media as the Church’s American point person on immigration.
Rhetorical considerations aside, few American bishops are likely to disagree with Cupich on the substance of the issue.
Immigration occupies a strange place among the American episcopate, because bishops tend to be in public broad agreement about the set of elements defining their approach to U.S. immigration policy, with little of the division found on other social and political issues. The most substantial parts of Cupich’s remarks seemed to be drawn from those talking points, even while the rhetoric was quite sharp.
In fact, during the first Trump administration, the bishops’ conference was outspoken about its opposition to Trump’s immigration policies, and frequently so — issuing dozens of statements on the matter during Trump’s term of office.
But for many bishops, Cupich is likely the wrong standard-bearer on the issue.
First, because the cardinal was so outspoken about collegial statements during the last administration, if he flies solo in this presidential term, his approach risks ringing hollow by the appearance of partisanship.
Second, when Cupich is involved, lockstep agreement with his approach tends to be a cast as a referendum on whether a bishop is “anti-Francis” — and many bishops have expressed being tired of that particular line of rhetoric.
And third, Cupich is not especially popular among the conference, and bishops tend to grumble already about his perceived penchant for finding a spotlight or a microphone, even at their own plenary meetings. And with Cupich publicly lamenting the “institutional failures” of the conference — and not holding a leadership position there — it seems unlikely that he will take pains to coordinate with the USCCB on priorities, messaging, and rhetoric.
Finally, some bishops may be concerned that Cupich’s interventions simply won’t gain a hearing with the Trump administration — that however they’re intended, they’ll be perceived as acrimonious and incindiary, rather than an attempt at constructive engagement on a pressing national issue.
Ironically, that was the very complaint Cupich waged about episcopal statements during the Biden administration.
In short, where Cupich rushes in, a swath of bishops may be reluctant to follow, especially if his approach is be unilaterally devised, absent the collegial decision-making he has previously championed.
While a bishop with a broad consensus of support among his brothers would likely spur others to speak out on the issue, Cupich leading the charge might leave bishops unsure of their roles, or how to contribute towards a positive outcome.
The danger is that, for bishops, that might lead to their own Leeroy Jenkins situation.
And when the issue is as important as immigration — where speaking the complicated elements of the Church’s teaching is tough enough already — the results could have real consequences.
In a surprising move, Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago has stepped out on immigration, calling for a more compassionate and just approach to the issue. In a recent statement, Cupich emphasized the need to welcome and support immigrants, particularly those who are fleeing violence and persecution in their home countries.Cupich’s stance on immigration is a departure from the more conservative views often held by members of the Catholic Church hierarchy. However, he is not alone in his advocacy for immigrants, as Pope Francis has also been a vocal supporter of welcoming and caring for migrants and refugees.
In his statement, Cupich urged political leaders to prioritize the well-being of immigrants and to work towards comprehensive immigration reform. He also emphasized the importance of treating immigrants with dignity and respect, regardless of their legal status.
It is clear that Cupich’s stance on immigration is rooted in his faith and his belief in the inherent dignity of every human being. As the debate over immigration continues to heat up, it is refreshing to see a religious leader like Cupich speaking out for justice and compassion. Let’s hope that his words inspire others to do the same.

Californians could vote to secede from the union as early as 2028, now that organizers have received official permission to begin to collect signatures on the initiative.
Secretary of State Shirley Weber announced Thursday that Marcus Ruiz Evans, the central proponent of the measure, must collect at least 546,651 signatures from registered voters — 5 percent of the total votes cast for governor in the November 2022 general election — in order for it to be included on the November 2028 ballot.
Ruiz Evans, a Fresno resident, has until July 22, 2025 to submit the signatures to county elections officials, according to Weber’s announcement.
“CALEXIT means that our laws are determined by the people of California and not unelected bureaucrats in Washington that we didn’t elect,” Ruiz Evans’ website states.
“It means that we get a government that begins and ends at the borders of California. It means an end to the money siphoned from the pockets of California taxpayers. Most importantly, it means that for the first time in our lives we control our own destiny,” the statement added.
Ruiz Evans, who has been angling for secession since 2012, is a staunch Donald Trump opponent, unlike his onetime partner in the effort, who has now abandoned the project after years of attempts.
He told The Independent that the two parted ways over polarizing political differences that were impossible to overcome, and described being questioned by FBI agents at his front door about Louis Marinelli, a staunch Trumper and Buffalo, New York native whose secessionist activities were allegedly funded by Russian intelligence.
Marinelli has said he had no idea that Aleksandr Ionov, his alleged Russian benefactor, was linked to the Kremlin’s security services until after Ionov and a handful of others were indicted by the feds in 2023.
“People think if you’re a secessionist, you’re crazy,” Ruiz Evans said on Saturday. “I hate Donald Trump,” he added. “I am full-blooded Mexican. The day he went on TV and said all Mexicans are rapists, I said, ‘He can go f**k himself.’ “
He added: “When I see Trump pick on women, on LGBTQ people … my family left Texas for California to escape that. And when I look at Trump, it reminds me of all the horror stories my mom and my grandma told me from [the time] before they left.”
California is not only the most populous state in the U.S., but also its wealthiest, with the fifth-largest economy in the world, according to the International Monetary Fund.
Trump has proposed adding conditions to federal aid for California to help it rebuild after devastating wildfires that ravaged the state that have been linked to climate change and fossil fuel uses, championed by Trump.
The president continues to pick fights with California Governor Gavin Newsome, calling the Democratic “Newscum” in social media posts and at press conferences.
Ruiz Evans told The Independent that Californians are outraged by Trump’s electoral victory following the January 6, 2021 insurrection, and he believes he can rally support to make his dream a reality.
In a surprising turn of events, California secession proponents have been given the green light to move forward with their plans for “Calexit.” The movement, which has gained traction in recent years, aims to have California secede from the United States and become its own independent nation. The proponents, led by the Yes California Independence Campaign, have been granted permission to begin collecting signatures in order to qualify for a ballot measure in 2022. If successful, the measure would allow Californians to vote on whether or not they want to pursue secession from the US.
While the road to secession is a long and difficult one, proponents are hopeful that they can make their case to the people of California and ultimately achieve their goal of independence. Supporters of the movement argue that California is a unique and diverse state with its own distinct culture, economy, and values, and that it would be better off governing itself.
However, critics of the secession movement have raised concerns about the practicality and feasibility of California becoming its own nation. They argue that the state is too economically reliant on the rest of the country and that secession could have negative consequences for both California and the US as a whole.
As the debate over Calexit continues to unfold, it will be interesting to see how Californians ultimately decide to proceed. Will the state take the bold step towards independence, or will the movement fizzle out before it even gets off the ground? Only time will tell.

Lucy Liu, who’s starred in titles from box-office action movies to crime dramas to musicals, now takes on a horror lead role in the new film “Presence.”
The ever-expansive actor, producer, director and artist plays the role of Rebekah, the family matriarch. Liu, 56, said the film, from director Steven Soderbergh and in theaters Friday, uses horror in an unexpected way to tell the story of unspoken family dynamics.
The movie features a young family who bought a 100-year-old suburban house from a real estate agent played by Julia Fox. There, family issues begin to unfold in a claustrophobic setting, depicted from the point of view of a mysterious spirit presence. The movie uses horror to touch on lesser-discussed family issues like child favoritism or communication breakdowns within marriages.
“The backdrop is a reality of a family dynamic and how this entity interacts or sees this family,” Liu told NBC News. “When people are in their own worlds, they don’t know how bad it sounds and how dysfunctional it can be until you see it from another perspective.”
The film doesn’t tie up loose ends and leaves audiences hanging, which she said horror is uniquely poised to do.
“Horror is a very specific genre that doesn’t necessarily need to be a tangible person or entity like Jason [from ‘Friday the 13th’], like things people imagined in the past,” Liu said. “This movie has a lot of suspense and when I watched it, it seemed like a thriller because things are unfolding and unraveling for the audience as they are watching it. It becomes a mystery that keeps people on the edge of their seats.”
The first-person point of view of the ghostly presence was captured by Soderbergh as he crept around the set in his martial arts slippers, cloth shoes, following the actors with a handheld camera.
As a director herself on TV episodes of “Elementary,” “Luke Cage” and “American Born Chinese,” Liu said she was inspired by her experience working with Soderbergh as he brought his ideas to life in new and innovative ways.
“Steven is willing to try different genres and ways of filming,” she said. “It takes courage because when you are somebody who is well-established and has a huge following of people, you don’t want to disappoint them, but in order to grow as an artist, you have to take big chances, whether it works or not.”
After three decades in the movie industry, Liu continues to break new ground and is still pointed to as a prominent figure for Asian American representation in Hollywood.
Born and raised in Queens, New York, Liu said she always knew she wanted to be an actor, but she didn’t see herself represented. She took the leap anyway.
Starting her acting career in the early ‘90s, Liu had a number of smaller roles on TV shows and movies before landing her breakthrough role in the comedy-drama “Ally McBeal.” In the following years, Liu hit superstardom with big roles in “Charlie’s Angels” and Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill.”
The actor became the second Asian American woman to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, after Anna May Wong in the 1960s, and the first Asian American woman to host “Saturday Night Live,” in 2000.
Liu said her continued success as an actor through the decades can be credited to her willingness to take risks and reinvent herself.
“Going into the acting business is a giant risk, that’s what it is,” Liu said. “It doesn’t stop; it’s not like you take one risk and you make it to the other side of the bridge.”
Lucy Liu, known for her versatile acting skills and multi-hyphenate career as an actress, director, and producer, is set to make her mark in the horror genre with her upcoming film “Presence.”In this chilling new project, Liu plays the lead role of a woman who starts experiencing supernatural occurrences in her home after a traumatic event. As she delves deeper into the mystery, she uncovers dark secrets that threaten to consume her.
Liu, who has captivated audiences with her performances in a wide range of genres, from action to comedy to drama, is excited to explore the world of horror and showcase her talent in a new light. With her impeccable acting chops and commanding screen presence, she is sure to bring a fresh perspective to the genre.
“Presence” promises to be a spine-tingling thriller that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. With Liu at the helm, this film is sure to be a must-see for horror fans and cinephiles alike.
Stay tuned for more updates on “Presence” and get ready to be thrilled by Lucy Liu’s haunting performance in this upcoming horror film.
