New top US Senate Republican John Thune steps up as Trump returns
By David Morgan
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Incoming U.S. Senate Republican leader John Thune faces the test of his career this year as he tries to steer Donald Trump’s agenda through a narrowly divided Congress while protecting his own chamber’s authority over Cabinet picks and spending.
A 20-year Senate veteran, Thune is expected to be elected Senate majority leader on Friday. He has a reputation for being an affable negotiator skilled at finding common ground between opposing factions.

Thune, a 63-year-old South Dakotan, will have to maintain a positive relationship with a sometimes petulant and unpredictable Trump, who once sought his ouster and who has displayed little interest in the Senate’s role as a check on executive power.
An early test will be overseeing the confirmation of a series of norm-shattering Cabinet nominees, while delivering on Trump’s agenda of tax cuts, border security and energy deregulation, and averting a potential U.S. default on its more than $36 trillion in debt sometime this year.
“He’s entering the majority leader position during one of the most contentious and consequential years the Senate has had in a generation,” said Brian Riedl, a former Senate aide who is now a senior fellow at the right-leaning Manhattan Institute. “It’s really going to be a trial by fire.”
Confirmation hearings begin soon for controversial Trump Cabinet picks including Pete Hegseth for defense secretary, Tulsi Gabbard for national intelligence director, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as health and human services secretary and Kash Patel as FBI director.
Members of Thune’s conference have expressed quiet concern about all four, whose resumes are unlike those of prior candidates for the powerful jobs. Since one Trump pick, former congressman Matt Gaetz, dropped out of the running for attorney general.
“REPUBLICANS, BE SMART AND TOUGH!!!” Trump said on social media on Tuesday, warning that Senate Democrats would try to delay the confirmation process.
Thune has met with the four more controversial candidates, but has avoided weighing in on their qualifications, saying simply that each candidate will have to answer questions at a public hearing and then face a Senate confirmation vote. Some Trump supporters say that stance is not firm enough for their tastes.
“The Senate majority leader’s job is to ensure that qualified cabinet nominees of his president’s party win confirmation,” said Mike Davis, a former Senate Republican aide who is founder and president of the Article III Project.
Davis said his Trump-aligned advocacy group has already directed tens of thousands of people to call and email wavering Senate Republicans and “light them up” on social media.
“If those qualified nominees fail, that is John Thune’s failure,” Davis said.
Thune expressed a readiness to give Trump’s picks “wide latitude and wide deference” in a recent Fox News interview, adding: “We have a job to do, advice and consent, and we will do it and make sure that there’s a process that’s fair.”
Thune has survived one pressure campaign by members of Trump’s “Make American Great Again,” or MAGA, movement, who had wanted Senator Rick Scott as the chamber’s leader instead.
SENATE’S POWER AND TRADITIONS
Thune, whose current six-year term extends through 2028, has strong support in South Dakota, which insulated him against Trump’s hopes of putting up a primary challenger against him in 2022 after he criticized Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 presidential election.
He has said he plans to protect the Senate’s power and traditions, which include both the authority to confirm or deny a president’s Cabinet picks and its “filibuster” rule, which requires 60 of the 100 senators to agree on most legislation — meaning that he may at times need Democratic support.
“The Senate is here by design to be a place where things slow down, to be more deliberative and give voice to the minority,” Thune told reporters last month. “Obviously, as we’ve said before, the filibuster is non-negotiable.”
Trump, in an interview with Time magazine, said he has “respect” for the filibuster and “a very good relationship” with Thune.
Thune’s allies say the former high school basketball star has the acumen to outmaneuver lawmakers unwilling to toe the party line on critical votes.
Trump, and his supporters, may expect no less — and seem poised to push back if some Senate Republicans try to buck his priorities. Trump has already suggested he would turn to recess appointments to install nominees if the Senate doesn’t support his picks.
Philip Wallach, a senior fellow at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, said Thune may face pressure from hardline conservatives with no interest in the Senate’s traditions: “There’s an awful lot of folks going into the new administration who just think of Congress as a pain in the butt.”

In a surprising turn of events, Senator John Thune has taken on a new role as the top Republican in the US Senate as former President Donald Trump returns to the political spotlight. Thune, who previously served as the Senate Majority Whip, has been thrust into the spotlight as he navigates the complex dynamics of the Republican party in the wake of Trump’s reemergence. As Trump continues to assert his influence over the party, Thune faces the challenge of balancing the competing interests of the former president’s loyal supporters and the more moderate factions within the GOP. With Trump’s recent endorsement of Thune’s primary opponent, the senator must tread carefully as he seeks to maintain his leadership position in the party.
Despite the challenges ahead, Thune has shown a willingness to step up and take on the responsibilities of his new role. As he navigates the turbulent waters of Trump’s return to the political arena, Thune’s leadership and strategic decision-making will be put to the test. Only time will tell how he will fare in this new and unpredictable political landscape.

Melbourne effect: First time, captain to sit out, Bumrah steps into Rohit’s shoes | Cricket News
THE EARLY hint of India captain Rohit Sharma sitting out of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at Sydney came from head coach Gautam Gambhir. “We shall look at the pitch and take a call tomorrow,” he said at the pre-match press conference here on Thursday.
It’s rare for the inclusion of a team captain being subject to the nature of the pitch.
Later, Rohit had a light net session, facing a few casual throwdowns. There was no official announcement, but by evening the word was out — Rohit, who has been struggling for runs, had “opted to rest” while vice-captain Jasprit Bumrah would lead the side.
The team seemed to take the change at the top in its stride. After the press conference, Rohit, Bumrah and Gambhir were seen sitting in the bucket-seats outside their dressing room — chatting, back-slapping and laughing.
After this short meeting, Rohit walked towards the team bus, to be greeted by a roar from a small crowd lined up outside. “Rohit, Rohit,” they chanted, and the “rested” captain gave a big smile as he sauntered into the bus.

It was an unusual day. The pre-match press conference, slated to start at 1.10 pm, began nearly half-an-hour late; word came out that the team was in a meeting. Gambhir and Bumrah could be seen engrossed in a long chat before Rohit joined them.
Gambhir then walked the corridor to the ‘press-room’ to address the media contingent. Very early in the interaction, an Australian journalist asked about the captain’s absence at the traditional pre-game press conference: “Is everything alright with Rohit?”.
Gambhir stiffened up. “Everything is fine with Rohit and I don’t think it’s (the captain’s presence at the press conference) anything traditional. The head coach is here and that should be fine,” he responded.
But, he slowly began to relax a bit, and even smiled. Asked how he was handling the difficult period of transition in the team, he said: “It’s the role of not only the support staff but you people (the media) as well. How can you, probably, not only criticise them but try and help them out as well? Transition is not only for us. Transition happens for the entire country and all of us are in it together.”
As ever with Gambhir, there were some frank statements. He talked about how the Indian team has “lacked fight” at times in this series. “We’ve got to keep fighting and that’s why we love… every one of us loves watching, playing and being a part of Test cricket. I know we have got to fight it out. And that’s probably one area where we’ve lacked in this series,” he said.

Asked whether he had given a stern talk to the players in the dressing room, as reported by The Indian Express on Wednesday, Gambhir first said these were “just reports”, but went on to add that he had an “honest” conversation with the team.
“Those are just reports. That’s not the truth. And I don’t think I need to answer (on) any reports, to be honest,” he stated. Going on to admit that he had an “honest” communication with the players, he said: “And there were some honest words, that’s all I can say. And honesty is very important. Honesty is extremely important if you want to probably go on and achieve some great things.”
In particular, Gambhir addressed the need for players to strike a balance between playing their “natural game” and adjusting to the match situation. “It’s a team sport and you’ve got to play what the team needs you to do. That’s as simple as it can get. People can play their natural game, but still, in a team sport, individuals only contribute. It’s the team. If you need to play in a certain way, I think you’ve got to do it.”
On the field later, the Indian team seemed to be preparing for life without Rohit. The first point of interest was the slip cordon, the position where Rohit usually places himself at the start of the game. The cordon had a new face: all-rounder Nitish Reddy.
A short while later, Gambhir went down to the arena, fist-bumped Shubman Gill and patted him on his back. Gill then found Bumrah approaching him — a shake of hands ensued before Bumrah patted him on the arm. It did seem like the moment Gill was possibly told that he would play, replacing Rohit in the top order.
At the batting nets, stand-in wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel batted in the first lot, a scene that hadn’t possibly played out in the series before. Virat Kohli and the rest joined him, before Rohit finally emerged from the dressing room and took his position at the far end of the nets, standing and chatting with the video analyst. Bumrah joined him shortly and both had a laugh.
Kohli, meanwhile, finished batting at the outdoor nets, went back in and emerged on the other side of the dressing room, overlooking the playing arena. He sat alone for 10-15 minutes, gazing into the distance. On the big screen, a promo of the India-Australia Test series was playing.
An aeroplane flew above, and Rohit looked up at the sky. A short while later, he left the nets, but emerged again with pads and took some throwdowns. He didn’t face any bowlers, and at one point, a yorker jammed into the bottom of his bat, leaving him screaming, “Mera bat, yaar!”. The scene was replayed on the next ball he faced. This was another hint that Rohit would do what no other Indian captain has done — rest for a Test.

The Melbourne effect: First time, captain to sit out, Bumrah steps into Rohit’s shoesIn a surprising turn of events, India’s regular captain Rohit Sharma has been ruled out of the second Test against Australia in Melbourne due to an injury. This marks the first time in his career that Rohit will be sitting out a Test match as captain.
Stepping into Rohit’s shoes as the stand-in captain for the match is none other than fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah. This move comes as a surprise to many, as Bumrah is not known for his leadership skills and is more of a quiet and introverted player on the field.
However, Bumrah has proven himself to be a key player for India in all formats of the game, and his ability to lead the bowling attack with precision and aggression has earned him the trust of the team management. With his unique bowling style and ability to take wickets at crucial moments, Bumrah will be looking to make an impact as captain in this crucial Test match.
The Melbourne effect seems to be at play once again, as India faces a tough challenge against Australia in their quest to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. With Bumrah leading the charge in Rohit’s absence, all eyes will be on the fast bowler to see if he can step up to the challenge and guide India to victory in Melbourne.

They are engaged and couldn’t be happier. Dua has had one of the best years of her career professionally and this is the cherry on the cake.”

Earlier this year, Lipa shared how she felt about romance these days with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1.
“In terms of relationships, I needed to get to this place in order to find what I really needed,” she shared. “You have to be in the act of forgiveness and growing and learning, and being okay with the past in order to move on with what’s to come next. So it’s, for me, Happy for You is a beautiful, happy song, because it’s so reflective of my journey.”
She continued, “I think with every relationship, with every experience you learn about yourself, you learn about things that are hurtful to you, what you expect, what you should be ready to give as well. I think, again, it goes back to that exchange of vulnerability.”

On Friday, U.S. Rep. Greg Lopez will make Colorado congressional history — well, almost.
After less than half a year representing the 4th Congressional District, Lopez will step aside as the second-shortest-serving member of Congress in state history — behind only William E. Burney, who filled a vacancy in Colorado’s then-3rd District from Nov. 5, 1940, to Jan. 3, 1941.
Lopez, a Republican who was sworn into Congress on July 8, said his congressional stint was an “honor and a pleasure,” if a bit discombobulated. The former mayor of Parker and a two-time Colorado gubernatorial hopeful rented 14 places on short-term leases to serve as home during his six months of service in Washington, D.C.
“I was like that foreign exchange student — I showed up in the middle of the year and missed the yearbook picture, but everybody liked me because they didn’t know that much about me,” he told The Denver Post last week, as he picked up pozole in Aurora for Christmas dinner with his wife of 37 years, Lisa.
Despite the truncated term, Lopez played a small but notable role in what became a convoluted electoral chess game centered on the political survival of U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, boosted GOP billing among Colorado’s congressional delegation and, ultimately, solidified Republican control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the upcoming Congress.
“The amount of coordination and the little bit of luck to get this to come together is something I will be teaching in class for a while,” Colorado State University political science professor Kyle Saunders said. “It’s a political story, it’s a campaign story and it’s a candidate story.”
Lopez, 60, won a special election in late June to fill out the term of Ken Buck, the longtime representative of the Eastern Plains district. Buck had abandoned his seat in March — nine months before his term was up. His retirement, announced in late 2023, set in motion a switch by Boebert, who was facing tough reelection prospects in her Western Slope district, to politically friendlier territory on the other side of the state.
The plan worked: Boebert won a hard-fought 4th Congressional District primary in a crowded Republican field and went on to win election easily in November. On the same night, Republican Jeff Hurd defeated his well-funded Democratic opponent, Adam Frisch, in the district Boebert had departed less than a year prior, and two years after Frisch nearly toppled her in the midterm election.
“It led to the Republicans holding both of these seats,” Saunders said of Boebert’s move.
Lopez, chosen by the 4th District’s central committee in late March to run in the special election, made it clear from the outset that he wouldn’t run in the June 25 primary against Boebert and nine other GOP hopefuls.
Boebert, in a statement, praised Lopez as having represented Colorado “in a principled manner” as she scrapped her way to becoming his successor. The 4th District seat represents agricultural communities across a large expanse of land but also well-populated suburban Douglas County in south metro Denver.
“While his time in Congress may have been quick, Congressman Lopez absolutely made the most of it and gave a voice to Colorado’s 4th District that his constituents had been without for too long,” she said. “He consistently went above and beyond his duties, from speaking up for his district in internal meetings and on the House floor to being an eager collaborator on the issues we agreed on, like cutting wasteful government spending.”
The nation’s mounting debt was a chief concern for Lopez while he was in Congress. In his final vote as a congressman, he opposed a continuing resolution to fund the government, saying on Dec. 20 that he could not “accept a bill that does nothing to address our $36 trillion debt.”
In September, he introduced a bill requiring a tally of the national debt to be listed on ballots in elections for federal office.
The next month, he introduced a bill touting a “Red Card” system to allow private businesses to hire immigrant workers who enter and live in the U.S. to work “under strict government oversight.” The arrangement, which would be critical to the 4th District’s labor-hungry agricultural sector, would not provide those workers a path to citizenship.
At the time that concern about Venuezelan gang activity and arrests in Aurora was making national headlines in September, Lopez introduced a measure that called on the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to detain and deport people in the country illegally with known gang affiliations.
None of his bills made it to the House floor for a vote, but Lopez said he was glad to have a voice in the Congress.
“I went in there knowing I was going to be there a short time,” he said. “It’s not often you get a chance to serve the people at that level.”
It wasn’t all work and grind in Washington. Lopez, during the interview, reminisced about the September day he was chosen MVP at the congressional flag football game against the Capitol Police.
As for the future and where politics might fit into it, Lopez said he was “keeping all my options open.”
“It’s been a great six months,” he said, “and maybe at some point I’ll write a book about it.”

In a surprising turn of events, Greg Lopez has announced that he will be stepping aside after only 6 months in Congress. The reasons for his sudden departure are unclear, but many speculate that it may be due to personal reasons or disagreements with fellow lawmakers.Taking his place will be Lauren Boebert, a controversial figure known for her outspoken and often divisive views. Boebert has already made headlines for her strong stance on gun rights and her unwavering support for former President Trump.
It remains to be seen how Boebert will fare in Congress, but one thing is for certain – her presence is sure to shake things up in the halls of power. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Dorian Finney-Smith steps into championship contention with Lakers
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — After spending his first day with the franchise, newly acquired Lakers forward Dorian Finney-Smith pointed out that L.A.’s trade with the Brooklyn Nets didn’t just bring him from the East Coast to the West Coast.
It brought him from near the bottom of the NBA standings to championship contention.
“It’s fun, man,” Finney-Smith said Monday. “Just the opportunity to play for a championship. Not even just playoffs. In Brooklyn, we were just fighting to get in the playoffs. Here, we’re trying to win the championship. So it’s a different approach, different energy, all around.”
The Lakers traded D’Angelo Russell, Maxwell Lewis and three future second-round picks in 2027, 2030 and 2031 to the Nets for Finney-Smith and guard Shake Milton on Sunday.
Finney-Smith and Milton, who were in Orlando with the Nets when they received the news, flew to L.A. on Sunday night and observed practice Monday while waiting for the trade to be officially completed when physicals for all the players involved are cleared.
Lakers coach JJ Redick — who was a teammate of Finney-Smith’s with the Dallas Mavericks and Milton’s with the Philadelphia 76ers — said he hoped to have both players in uniform Tuesday when L.A. hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“Dorian gives us another defender and he’s a guy that has guarded multiple positions throughout his career,” Redick said. “He’s worked to become an elite spot-up, catch-and-shoot 3-point shooter. So, just excited to have him. Shake, another guy that can handle the ball and score the basketball and shoot the basketball.
“I know what they bring on the court. I also know what they bring in terms of a culture and locker room fit. … It’s going to be great for our group, both on and off the court.”
Finney-Smith averaged 10.4 points on 45.9% shooting (43.5% from 3), 4.6 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 20 games for Brooklyn. Milton averaged 7.4 points on 46.5% (38.9% from 3), 1.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists.
While Finney-Smith, 31, makes $14.9 million this season and has 35 playoff games under his belt, Redick said he will not change his current starting lineup featuring LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, Rui Hachimura and the 21-year-old Max Christie.
“We’re in a good spot with our starting group right now,” Redick said. “So, he’ll play and he’ll come off the bench, and like I’ve told you guys several times, I want consistency with that group, but I’m not going to be stubborn and locked into something if it’s not working. But it’s working right now, and [Finney-Smith] is a guy that can fit in very easily with any lineup and any sort of roster.”
Redick credited Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka for completing the trade in late December, with the Feb. 6 trade deadline still six weeks away.
“It’s certainly a positive in my eyes to be able to integrate these guys for a longer stretch of time,” Redick said. “We need these guys to be available now to play.”
Lakers backup point guard Gabe Vincent left Saturday’s win over the Sacramento Kings early with a hip injury and did not practice Monday. L.A. continues to be without forward Jarred Vanderbilt and center Christian Wood, who have both yet to play this season. Vanderbilt participated in the noncontact portion of practice Monday, however.
“There’s a real value in creating cohesion and continuity and connectedness,” Redick continued. “And the more you have to do that the better I think your chances are when you get to April and May and hopefully June.”
While Finney-Smith had to sit out practice Monday, he made sure to make good use of the time by introducing himself to James on his new teammate’s 40th birthday.
“I told Bron today, this is probably the most I ever said something to him,” Finney-Smith said. “I’ve been guarding him for nine years, but I’m just not too friendly on the court. So now I just have to pull that shade down and ask him, ‘Give me some of those shoes.’ I can finally ask for some of that gear. We never know when he’s going to hang it up.
“It was fun to be able to ask him for something, knowing I ain’t got to compete against him tomorrow.”
The Los Angeles Lakers have made a big move in their quest for another NBA championship, as they have reportedly signed forward Dorian Finney-Smith.Finney-Smith, who spent the last six seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, brings versatility and defensive prowess to the Lakers lineup. His ability to guard multiple positions and knock down three-pointers will make him a valuable asset for the team as they look to make a deep playoff run.
With Finney-Smith joining a roster that already features superstars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers are now viewed as serious contenders for the NBA title. His addition adds depth and skill to a team that is already loaded with talent.
Lakers fans are excited to see how Finney-Smith will fit in with the team and help them compete for another championship. His impact on both ends of the floor could be the missing piece that propels the Lakers to success in the upcoming season. Stay tuned for what promises to be an exciting journey as the Lakers chase another championship with Dorian Finney-Smith in the mix.

11 homeChad Duell On His GH Exit: ‘Sometimes You have to Take Drastic Steps’

Chad Duell’s announcement that he was leaving General Hospital as Michael Corinthos, a role he’s played since 2010, took the daytime world by storm last November. The actor recently opened up about the reasons behind his departure and how he’s coping with it to co-stars Bradford Anderson (Spinelli) and Steve Burton (Jason) during an episode of their Daily Drama Podcast.
Opening Up
“It’s just a life adjustment,” began Duell, reflecting on the move. “A lot of stuff has been going on in my life… This break, there’s a few things behind it.” A painful personal loss topped his list of reasons. “My dad passed away, and I’m still coming to terms with that,” he explained. “Also, my intention was to spend some time back in Arizona, but that’s becoming a little harder to do. Luana [Lucci, Duell’s partner] has school. Dawson [their son] goes to this daycare out here… Right now I’m just more about doing things mentally, physically. [I’m] preparing myself for whatever next chapters [come].”
Those “next chapters” could include a return to GH at some point, since the soap’s executive producer, Frank Valentini, “left the door open there,” noted Duell. “So we’ll see what happens in the future. But right now I’m just trying to grow in ways that maybe I feel like I’ve stifled myself… Sometimes you have to take drastic steps or make yourself feel uncomfortable to take a step. That’s kind of what I have not allowed myself to do in a long time, is to step into more of an uncomfortable situation and grow instead of just [being] comfortable and complacent. That’s the journey at this moment.”
Once the holiday season officially wraps, Duell plans on taking those next steps. “Coming in January, I have a few things planned that I want to do for myself,” said Duell, noting that it’s what’s best for him spiritually and mentally. “Everything, too, will only reflect my energy in a better way towards everybody around me. And I want to make sure that I take care of myself as well, which I haven’t always done.”
Duell, who made his GH debut on April 20, 2010, marveled at the fact that he’s spent 14 years of his life on GH. “Time flew by since I started there. It’s insanity,” he said, acknowledging that he settled into the “comfortable and safe job… But safety and comfort [are] the enemy of progress a lot of times… I feel like I had a very strong complacency and comfort for such a long time that my identity was wrapped up in that. Who I was was the show and the character I’ve done for so long.
“It’s going to be a process kind of unraveling that and really seeing who I am, especially now in my life,” Duell continued. “It’s going to be a little journey… I don’t know what the future holds, but there’s a lot of work I have to do to achieve the potential that I know I have; not just in career-wise, but in a lot of aspects. I feel like I’ve been in that bubble of comfort for such a long time. As an artist to be repeating the same kind of thing can kind of be a little stagnant, but I’m still extremely blessed to be able to [have been on GH] for as long as I have.”
Chad Duell, who has portrayed Michael Corinthos on General Hospital for nearly a decade, recently announced his departure from the long-running soap opera. In a heartfelt statement, Duell expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play such a complex and beloved character, but also hinted at the need for change in his career.“Sometimes you have to take drastic steps in order to grow and challenge yourself as an actor,” Duell said. “I am incredibly thankful for the experiences and relationships I have gained during my time on General Hospital, but I feel it is time for me to explore new opportunities and continue to push myself creatively.”
Fans of the show were shocked by the news of Duell’s departure, as Michael Corinthos has become a staple character on General Hospital. However, many have expressed their support for the actor as he embarks on this new chapter in his career.
As Duell prepares to say goodbye to Port Charles, fans are eagerly anticipating his final scenes and wondering what the future holds for both the actor and his character. Whatever may come next, one thing is certain – Chad Duell’s talent and dedication to his craft will undoubtedly lead him to success in whatever he chooses to pursue next.
