The Prince of Wales said he was “shocked and saddened” by the “tragic” death of his former nanny’s stepson in a vehicle attack in New Orleans.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed they were supporting the family of Edward Pettifer, 31, of Chelsea, who was killed in the New Year’s Day attack in Bourbon Street, Louisiana.

Authorities have confirmed 14 people died and at least 35 others were injured when the suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, allegedly ploughed a pick-up truck through crowds of New Year revellers.

In a personally signed message posted on the Kensington Palace social media account, William said: “Catherine and I have been shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Ed Pettifer.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Pettifer family and all those innocent people who have been tragically impacted by this horrific attack. W.”

It is understood the King was made aware of Mr Pettifer’s death through official channels, was deeply saddened, and had been in touch with the family to share personal condolences.

The Telegraph reported that Mr Pettifer was the stepson of William and Harry’s former nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke, also known as Alexandra Pettifer.

Mr Pettifer was the eldest son of Charles Pettifer, a former Coldstream Guards officer, and Camilla Wyatt, the daughter of a racehorse breeder, according to the newspaper.

His half-brother Tom, who is a godson to William, was a page boy at the wedding of the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2011.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy said he was “extremely saddened” to hear of the death.

In a statement, Mr Lammy said: “Extremely saddened to hear the tragic news that a British man was among those killed during the attack in New Orleans.

“We are supporting their family and are united with the US against terror threats.”

Jabbar, a 42-year-old Texan, allegedly got out of the vehicle and fired a gun before being shot by police.

Mr Pettifer’s family said in a statement: “The entire family are devastated at the tragic news of Ed’s death in New Orleans. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, and a friend to so many.

“We will all miss him terribly. Our thoughts are with the other families who have lost their family members due to this terrible attack.

“We request that we can grieve the loss of Ed as a family in private.”

The New Orleans coroner gave Mr Pettifer’s preliminary cause of death as “blunt force injuries”.

The Met Police said family liaison officers are supporting Mr Pettifer’s family and helping them through the process of returning his body to the UK.

The Foreign Office also said it was supporting the victim’s family and was in contact with US authorities.

The attack took place in the city’s popular French Quarter at around 3.15am local time on New Year’s Day.

The New Orleans coroner said one of those killed remains unidentified with the others coming from the US – the youngest aged 18 and the oldest 63.

The FBI confirmed an Islamic State flag was found inside the vehicle and explosive devices were discovered nearby.

It is believed the suspect acted alone.

Earlier this week, US President Joe Biden said the attacker posted a video which indicated he was inspired by the so-called Islamic State group.

William, the former employer of a beloved ex-nanny, was left in shock after hearing the tragic news of her stepson’s death in a recent attack in New Orleans. The devastating incident has shaken William and all those who knew the family, leaving them in disbelief and mourning the loss of a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time.

Stepson of former royal nanny died in New Orleans attack

British police have named one of the victims of the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans as Edward Pettifer whose stepmother was a nanny to Prince William and Prince Harry.

Britain’s King Charles III is said to be “deeply saddened” at the news that Mr Pettifer, 31, was among the victims of the deadly truck-ramming attack that killed 14 people in New Orleans in the early hours of 1 January.

Mr Pettifer’s father Charles, a former British army officer, married Tiggy Legge-Bourke in 1999 shortly after she had stepped down as nanny to Prince William and Prince Harry.

It was “understood the King was… deeply saddened, and had been in touch with the family to share personal condolences”, the UK’s Press Association news agency said in a report.

Mr Pettifer’s half brother Tom is a godson of heir to the throne Prince William and was a page boy at his wedding to Catherine, the Princess of Wales in 2011.

In 1993, Charles employed Tiggy Legge-Bourke, now Pettifer, whose family had longstanding links to the royals, as a nanny for William and Harry after his separation from Princess Diana.

“The entire family are devastated at the tragic news of Ed’s death in New Orleans. He was a wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew, and a friend to so many,” Pettifer’s family said in a statement.

“We will all miss him terribly. Our thoughts are with the other families who have lost their family members due to this terrible attack,” they added.

Prince William said he was “shocked and saddened” over his death.

In a personally signed message posted on the Kensington Palace social media account, he said: “Catherine and I have been shocked and saddened by the tragic death of Ed Pettifer.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Pettifer family and all those innocent people who have been tragically impacted by this horrific attack. W.”

I am deeply saddened to share the tragic news that the stepson of a former royal nanny has died in a violent attack in New Orleans. The victim, whose name has not been released, was the stepson of Tiggy Legge-Bourke, who famously served as a nanny to Princes William and Harry during their childhood.

The details surrounding the attack are still unclear, but reports indicate that the victim was a beloved member of the community and will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time.

This senseless act of violence serves as a stark reminder of the need for greater compassion and understanding in our society. We must come together to support one another and work towards a more peaceful and harmonious world.

Rest in peace to the victim, and may his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

It adds that William and Harry have both been informed of Edward’s death. The BBC says that Harry will not be commenting publicly on the sad news.

The attack on January 1st involved US Army veteran Shamsud-Din Jabbar driving a pick-up truck into crowds on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ famous French Quarter, killing 14 and injuring at least 38. International media reports that the attacker left his car and began firing at police. The FBI confirmed that the assailant died following a gunfight with three responding officers.

Edward Pettifer has been identified by the Metropolitan Police as the British national who was killed in New Orleans on 1 January

The Prince of Wales has said he and Catherine are “shocked and saddened” by the death of his former nanny’s stepson Edward Pettifer, who was killed in the New Orleans attack.

The 31-year-old was among 14 people killed in a vehicle attack on New Year’s Day.

His stepmother Alexandra Pettifer, previously known as Tiggy Legge-Bourke, cared for Prince William and Prince Harry in the 1990s.

Prince William added: “Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Pettifer family and all those innocent people who have been tragically impacted by this horrific attack.”

This comes after palace sources said King Charles was “deeply saddened” by the death and has been in touch with Mr Pettifer’s family.

The 1 January attack saw a 42-year-old US Army veteran drive a pick-up truck into crowds along New Orleans’s famous Bourbon Street before being shot dead by police.

The New Orleans coroner gave Mr Pettifer’s preliminary cause of death as “blunt force injuries”, PA reports.

In a tribute, Mr Pettifer’s family described him as a “wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend to so many”.

Prince Harry has also been informed but will not be commenting publicly on the news.

The suspect, named as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, is believed to have acted alone in a “premeditated and evil act”, the FBI said.

It added that a flag of the Islamic State group was found inside the vehicle.

Two improvised explosive devices were also found nearby, according to police.

A well-known American college football player, a young aspiring nurse and a mother of a four-year-old are among the victims.

At least 39 people were also injured during the attack, which took place in the city’s French Quarter – a bustling nightspot popular with locals and tourists – at around 03:15 (09:15 GMT) on Wednesday.

Some of the injured have been discharged from hospital – but more than a dozen remain, with some being treated in the ICU.

Mr Pettifer, of Chelsea, London, was named by the Metropolitan Police as among the victims on Saturday morning.

His family said in a statement they were “devastated at the tragic news of Ed’s death in New Orleans”.

“We will all miss him terribly. Our thoughts are with the other families who have lost their family members due to this terrible attack.

“We request that we can grieve the loss of Ed as a family in private. Thank you.”

In a statement, the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office said it was supporting Mr Pettifer’s family.

Ms Pettifer joined King Charles’s staff in 1993 when he was the Prince of Wales.

She became a close companion to the young princes following the separation of Charles and Diana, Princess of Wales.

Ms Pettifer often accompanied the two princes on holiday and, following the death of Diana, she helped them adjust to the loss of their mother.

In 1999, Ms Pettifer – née Legge-Bourke – married security consultant Charles Pettifer at a private ceremony in Wales, which was attended by William and Harry.

Prince William was left shocked and saddened by the tragic news of the death of his former nanny’s stepson. The Duke of Cambridge, who had a close relationship with his childhood nanny, was devastated to hear about the sudden loss.

The stepson of Tiggy Legge-Bourke, who served as Prince William and Prince Harry’s nanny when they were young, passed away unexpectedly. The news came as a shock to Prince William, who had always held a special place in his heart for Tiggy.
