    No other artists of the new wave reached such stratospheric commercial heights as The Police. Their pleasing blend of reggae dub and pop won them an army of fans that didn’t care much for punk, and by the time the 1980s rolled around, they were selling out stadiums off the back of monster LPs like Ghost in the Machine and Synchronicity.

    Disbanding not long after their mammoth hit ‘Every Breath You Take’, singer Sting saw further success as a global name in the adult-contemporary singer-songwriter world, and guitarist Andy Summers indulged in his second love of photography and holding exhibits around the world.

    Drummer Stewart Copeland built a respectable day job for himself as a composer for film and TV, scoring a diverse array of work from Wall Street, Ken Loach’s Riff Raff, and Highlander II: The Quickening. One of the first mainstream musicians commissioned to a video game after Michael Jackson‘s uncredited production for Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Copeland stepped up to the task of scoring the first four entries of the Spyro the Dragon series, crafting tracks he considered some of the best of his career.

    Concerning the titular dragon’s adventures in a fantasy world and encountering the myriad enemies smattered across the floating worlds against pink-tinted skies and glittering starscapes, the interactive medium, coupled with the evocative imagery, demanded both a high turnaround while maintaining a creative energy.

    Speaking to Screen Rant last year in celebration of the game’s 25th anniversary, Copeland recognised the useful discipline of video games musical peripheries: “I just had to churn and burn. There was so much music required; it was like doing a quadruple album of backing tracks every summer for four years. It was deeply engrossing, but I had to just move so quickly that I discovered something interesting about composition and probably other artistic endeavours as well, which is that pressure increases the quality. I had to produce such quantity that I could not stop for a minute, I couldn’t evaluate, couldn’t judge just had to churn and burn.”

    He did his homework. Playing the levels with the help of cheat codes provided to him by the developer, Copeland sat through the game, noting down details of the worlds he was navigating, sketching ideas he’d flesh out for the score. Reportedly, to get into the musical headspace, he had to complete the level first before attempting to tinker with his Kurzweil K2500x keyboard and its orchestral samples.

    Despite such lofty work with The Police and Hollywood, Copeland places Spyro the Dragon among his best works and instrumental in his practice as a composer, plus his own personal byword for musical eureka moments: “Looking back, it turns out that that music produced under those harsh conditions actually are some of the best tunes I ever wrote – some of the best basslines, some of the best chord progressions, some of the little three-note tricks”.

    Concluding, “And now when I’m writing my big gigantic symphonic works, I go back to Spyro for that little trick there, that little idea that came when I was desperate, offering up my soul to the Muses, ‘Please just give me a riff!’”

    Having a guilty pleasure isn’t always as embarrassing as it sounds. It’s all good music at the end of the day, and even if something isn’t necessarily cool for someone to like, it’s hard to really judge anyone’s taste based on the one song that they consider to be a bit catchier than what they normally listen to. And for someone like Stewart Copeland, he couldn’t hide the fact that he had his fair share of guilty pleasures in the days of The Police.

    When the power trio first started hitting the clubs, though, the mission was to make something that no one had ever considered. There had been pieces of punk and reggae in their delivery, but their goal was to create a smorgasbord of sound whenever Sting wrote a song, whether that meant putting something different into ‘Walking on the Moon’ or bringing that nervous energy to ‘Message in a Bottle’.

    In the case of Copeland, it was more about finding a way to balance the tasteful playing with the more ambitious pieces that he put together. No one could spend their lives trying to beat the life out of the drumheads, but if he spent years trying to refine his craft behind the kit, he wasn’t going to sacrifice it for the bare minimum whenever Sting came up with a laid-back groove and needed a simple 4/4 rhythm.

    And it wasn’t like the rest of the world wanted that kind of music, either. A lot of the crowds that Copeland ran with were interested in making songs that were deliberately sterile, and the sudden influx of new wave and synthesiser bands helped push the boundaries of where things would be going once the 1980s really kicked into high gear.

    Things were certainly progressing, but that didn’t mean that Fleetwood Mac got off everyone’s speakers. As much as bands wanted to go outside the norm, Rumours ruled the airwaves for a damn good reason, and listening back to almost any song from the record, it’s no wonder why many people considered them one of the greatest rock and roll bands for production.

    And despite doing jazzy experiments on records like Reggatta de Blanc and Zenyatta Mondatta, Copeland had to admit that he was singing right along with everyone else when ‘Dreams’ or ‘Go Your Own Way’ came on the radio, saying, “We were listening to Human League, Talking Heads and Blondie… in mono. Also, a guilty pleasure which I can confess after all these years, I was listening to Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours, even though we were supposedly the revolutionaries trying to burn down their ship.”

    It’s not like the band didn’t take a few cues from them as well. As much as their later records like Synchronicity catered towards the pop crowd, the immaculate production behind everything had to come from studying how Rumours was created, only this time with Copeland’s snare drum front and centre in the mix compared to the more rounded sound that Fleetwood Mac got on their final mix.

    The Police stood for everything that Fleetwood Mac was the opposite of, but going back to Rumours is the perfect example of the phrase ‘know your enemy’. Because if you’re not careful, you might pick up on some of the tricks that the opposing side had up their sleeves for all those years.

    Keough stars as Marie Currie in The Runaways, a biographical film that tells the story of the band of the same name — all the glitz and glamor as well as the downsides of popularity. The main leads are Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning as Joan Jett and Cherie Currie, respectively. Cherie loves rock and has dreamed of being a rockstar ever since she was young. She even cut her hair to resemble rock icon David Bowie. Then there’s Joan, who shares the same dream. One night, in a club, Joan meets Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon), a record producer, and tells him that she wants to start an all-girl band. They find members such as Sandy West (Stella Maeve) and Lita Ford (Scout Taylor-Compton). Eventually, after a couple of auditions, Cherie also makes it into the band; thus, The Runaways is born.

    Not long after, The Runaways rise to fame; they sign with a record company and go on tour, further cementing their name in the rock industry. All is going well for the band for a bit. However, tension between the band members slowly builds. For instance, Lita gets mad at Cherie because a magazine only has pictures of her. All of the disagreements, the overly passionate fans, and the sudden thrust into popularity worsened Cherie’s drug problem. Despite trying to sweep it under the rug, Cherie keeps getting insulted by Lita and even Kim. At one point, while in a hospital after collapsing, Marie, her twin sister, tells Cherie to keep pushing forward.

    The Runaways is Keough’s first film credit, and although she doesn’t have a big part in the film, her role is significant in Cherie’s character development — she has always shown support for Cherie’s rock n’ roll dream. However, when she learns that Cherie is spiraling because of continuous drug use, she is the one who tells her to straighten up before it gets even worse. She is stern in her approach, but it’s because she wants her sister to get better. And although it takes a long while for Cherie to find her footing after quitting the band and that rock n’ roll life, she manages to find that peace, thanks to Marie’s push.

    Keough is excellent as Marie, as she displays this natural caring attitude and sternness that are needed to make Marie Currie come to life. Since The Runaways is Keough’s film debut, it’s understandable that she didn’t have that big of a role; despite this, her part is impactful to the overarching story being told and proved that she has potential as an actress moving forward. After The Runaways, Keough can be seen in a couple of critically acclaimed projects that show her adaptability in different genres — from Mad Max: Fury Road, The Lodge, and Under the Bridge, among others.

    ‘The Runaways’ Received Positive Reviews From Critics

    Directed and written by Floria Sigismondi, The Runaways gives the audience a closer look at the life of being a part of a rock n’ roll band in the late 90’s — the good and the bad. In the movie, Cherie begins to see her dream as negative, with all the sudden fame and attention making her overwhelmed. She says to the band that she didn’t ask for it; she didn’t ask for publications to focus on her or be the face of the band. Life in a growing band is unpredictable; it just sometimes comes without warning. The Runaways carefully shows that side of popularity while still boasting an electric pacing, complete with sharp editing and great performances.

    It’s also interesting to hear the opinions of some of the actual members of The Runaways regarding the 2010 film. In an interview with AV Club, Cherie Currie praises Fanning for portraying her excellently. She says that she gets “so engulfed in the film that I forget it’s about The Runaways and me and Joan.” Joan Jett, in an interview with Interview, says that she watched the film and found it difficult to have some distance from it, saying, “There are a couple of things they decide not to fully comment on in regards to some creative decisions… it’s under the guise of “poetic license,” Cherie says.

    The Runaways received mostly positive responses, with critics applauding its exhilarating energy and music as well as the performances, mostly for Fanning and Stewart. Their natural chemistry elevated the script even more, despite lacking an in-depth exploration of their fame and how it affects them differently. Keough also holds her own among a great and experienced cast, and it’s no wonder why she gets more and more projects throughout the years.

    Aaron Pierre has a pretty good 2024 between leading the action thriller Rebel Ridge, which can be streamed with a Netflix subscription, and voicing the title character of Mufasa: The Lion King, which is now playing in theaters. As the cherry on top of the proverbial sundae, though, he was also cast to play John Stewart in Lanterns, the Green Lantern-focused series set in the new DC Universe franchise. I’m already intrigued about what Lanterns has in store, but after hearing about Pierre’s early introduction to Stewart, I’m even more hopeful about his take on the character in the upcoming DC TV show.

    After admitting in an interview with EW that he hasn’t seen Ryan Reynolds’ Green Lantern movie, which failed to impress critically or commercially when it was released in 2011, Pierre stated that he was exposed to John Stewart early on from one of the best animated TV shows of all time. In his words:

    I think Justice League Unlimited might have been one of my first introductions to John Stewart.

    He’s definitely not alone in having learned about John Stewart from Justice League Unlimited or its Justice League predecessor, voiced by Phil LaMarr in both. Although Stewart has been part of DC Comics lore since he was introduced in the pages of Green Lantern #87 in the early 1970s, it was the Justice League animated series, which premiered in 2001, that he became a mainstream DC character. Although Hal Jordan is traditionally depicted as the Green Lantern who helps form the Justice League, the DC Animated Universe went with Stewart instead. This in turn led to John Stewart’s profile increasing in the comics.

    So not only were Justice League and Justice League Unlimited great ways for viewers to learn about John Stewart, for a lot of DC fans, he is their main Green Lantern. So it’s about time that this emerald ring-slinger finally makes his live-action debit, although there had been plans for Wayne T. Carr to play the character in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. If Aaron Pierre’s take on Stewart pulls from Phil LaMarr’s version in any significant way, then that will give me one more thing to appreciate from Lanterns.

    Pierre will star in Lanterns opposite Kyle Chandler, who’s playing Hal Jordan, the veteran Green Lantern showing rookie John Stewart the ropes. The two protectors of Sector 2814 will be investigating a murder in the American heartland, and this mystery will end up factoring into the main DC Universe storyline. Pierre and Chandler’s Lanterns cast-mates include Kelly McDonald, Garrett Dillahunt and Poorna Jagannathan. Ozark’s Chris Mundy is serving as showrunner and writing alongside Watchmen’s Damon Lindelof and longtime DC Comics writer Tom King, who’s especially pleased with the Hal and John castings.

    Singer Rod Stewart paid a tearful tribute to his friend Richard Perry in an Instagram post writing he and his wife Penny Lancaster were “both in tears” over the news. 

    The music producer, who was behind Rod’s The Great American Songbook, died of cardiac arrest aged 82. His death was confirmed by actress Daphna Kastner to the Associated Press.

    On Wednesday, Rod wrote on his socials: “Dearest Richard, farewell, my dear buddy. They say in life a man is lucky if he can count his true friends on one hand, and you were certainly one of them.”

    “Now I’ve lost you, and I’m devastated. We played and worked so closely together for so many years, creating some of the most memorable music together.”

    He concluded: “You were there when Penny and I first started dating, encouraging our relationship. We are both in tears as I post this farewell.”

    Richard’s long-term personal assistant, Ben McCarthy told TMZ that the producer had been battling Parkinson’s disease. The PA recalled visiting the producer about a month ago saying he could no longer verbally communicate but remained in good spirits. 

    Daphna spoke highly of her friend to AP, who helped make pop history by producing Carly Simon’s You’re So Vain. She said: “He maximized his time here. He was generous, fun, sweet, and made the world a better place. The world is a little less sweeter without him here. But it’s a little bit sweeter in heaven.”

    The talented producer who previously shared an eight-year relationship with Jane Fonda, was even mentioned in Rod’s autobiography.

    In Rod: The Autobiography, he remembered his friend’s 1970s West Hollywood mansion as: “The scene of much late-night skulduggery through the 1970s and beyond, and a place you knew you could always fall into at the end of an evening for a full-blown knees-up with drink and music and dancing.”

    Throughout the 1970s Richard worked with mega stars including Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Diana Ross, and Ringo Starr. Other big hits he helped work on included The Pointer Sisters on I’m So Excited.

    One special part of his legacy included modernising the sound of Barbra Streisand, helping her transition into contemporary pop and rock.

    Damian Lillard, who has missed the Bucks‘ past four games due to a calf issue and an illness, will return to action on Saturday against Chicago, reports NBA insider Chris Haynes (via Twitter).

    Speaking to reporters after today’s shootaround, Lillard explained that the calf injury, which caused him to miss games last Friday and Saturday, was a “mild” strain and that the illness which sidelined him on Monday and Thursday hit him much harder, as Eric Nehm of The Athletic relays (via Twitter).

    “I’ve never been that sick before in my entire life,” Lillard said. “I wasn’t throwing up, nothing. I just didn’t eat for two days. I didn’t eat at all. I didn’t get up, nothing. I was down. It was bad. Couple days ago, I tried to work out – the night before (Thursday’s) Brooklyn game, because I wanted to play against Brooklyn – but I mean, the whole time I was working out, it just kept making me cough, coughing up s–t. I got through the workout, but I couldn’t breathe good.

    “… I lost a couple pounds. I mean, if you don’t eat for two days. And I was just trying to at least stay hydrated. … (But) I didn’t have no food in me, it was just all liquid, so obviously I dropped some weight.”
