  • Avalanche Game 54 vs Philadelphia Flyers, Looking For Two Straight Wins, Lines, Notes & How to Watch

The Colorado Avalanche (30-21-2) play their last home game before the 4 Nations Faceoff against the Philadelphia Flyers (23-24-6) in a matinee matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 1:08 p.m. MT.

The Avs wanted to treat their last stretch of games before the break like it were the playoffs. Mission accomplished against the Blues on Friday. They shut them out 5-0 and imposed their will right from the opening draw.

They hope to continue that against the Flyers in their last game at Ball Arena until late February.  Mackenzie Blackwood, who made 19 saves against St. Louis, is back between the pipes looking to win two straight for the first time in a few weeks. He’ll likely be backed up by Trent Miner following Scott Wedgewood’s absence from Saturday’s practice.

Blackwood and the Avs haven’t strung together two consecutive victories since Dec. 31 and Jan. 2. They’ll get a big opportunity to do that against a team riding a two-game losing streak.

Martin Necas has been excellent in his first four games and scored against the Blues — his first goal with Colorado. The forward is riding a three-game point streak and has helped revive a struggling power play.

But he’s not the only new forward making his mark. Jack Drury, playing on a line with Ross Colton and Miles Wood, has been a pleasant surprise. He fits what the team does and gives them added depth in the bottom six. Drury has two goals in four games.

Not only have they lost two straight, but the Flyers enter this matchup without a goal in consecutive games. They lost 5-0 and 3-0 to the New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders.

This will also be their first game since trading Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee to the Calgary Flames for Andrei Kuzmenko and Jakob Pelletier. Kuzmenko is a former KHL teammate of young forward Matvei Michkov. The two will be reunited, albeit in a John Tortorella system.

This will also be the second time that Erik Johnson returns to Ball Arena since leaving as a free agent in 2023. EJ has dressed in just 18 games this season but likely will play against the Avs.

  • Auger-Aliassime advances to Montpellier semifinals with straight sets win over Bu

MONTPELLIER, France — Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the semifinals of the Open Occitanie tennis tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 win over China’s Bu Yunchaokete on Friday.

Auger-Aliassime, the second seed in Montpellier, reached the semifinals of the ATP 250 indoor hardcourt event for the second straight year.

He joined Jannik Sinner (33) and Carlos Alcaraz (31) as the only players born since 2000 to reach 30 tour-level semifinals.

Auger-Aliassime converted 86 per cent of first service points and fired 11 aces to pick up his 51st career indoor hardcourt win.

The 24-year-old Canadian, who won his sixth ATP Tour title at the Adelaide International earlier this month, improved to 8-2 this season.

Auger-Aliassime will next face Jesper de Jong of the Netherlands in Saturday’s semifinals.

“My game is more disciplined,” Auger-Aliassime said of his success this year. “I feel like last year I had some brilliant shots but also moments where I made a lot of mistakes. But now, two straight-sets wins, (I am)] more solid and I am happy with that because that’s the goal. Hopefully, I go one more step and get to the finals on Sunday.”

In a thrilling quarterfinal match at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, 20-year-old Canadian sensation Felix Auger-Aliassime showcased his talent and determination as he defeated world No. 65 Cameron Norrie in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.

Auger-Aliassime, who is currently ranked No. 21 in the world, displayed his trademark powerful serve and forehand shots to overpower his opponent and secure his spot in the semifinals. The young star’s aggressive playing style and fearless attitude on the court have earned him a reputation as one of the most promising players on the ATP Tour.

With this impressive victory, Auger-Aliassime has now reached his second semifinal of the season and is one step closer to capturing his first ATP title of the year. The Canadian’s success in Montpellier is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the sport, and fans around the world are eagerly anticipating his next match as he continues to make a name for himself on the professional tennis circuit.

  • Rutgers’ Dylan Harper out vs. Michigan, missing 2nd straight

Rutgers star freshman Dylan Harper is out for Saturday’s game against Michigan, per the Big Ten injury report.

Harper suffered a sprained ankle against Penn State on Jan. 20 and aggravated it in the following game against Michigan State. He sat out Wednesday’s loss to Northwestern, after which coach Steve Pikiell said Harper was dealing with a high ankle sprain.

The New Jersey native missed a game and was hampered in others earlier this season with the flu.

Despite the setbacks, Harper has been one of the elite freshmen in college basketball, averaging 18.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. In back-to-back games in late November, he went for 36 points against Notre Dame and 37 points against Alabama.

The 6-foot-6 guard is No. 2 in ESPN’s NBA draft rankings.

Without Harper against Northwestern, fellow freshman star Ace Bailey — the No. 3 prospect in ESPN’s draft rankings — went for 37 points on 13-for-20 shooting.

    Rutgers (11-10, 4-6 Big Ten) hosts Michigan (15-5, 7-2) at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Rutgers’ Dylan Harper out vs. Michigan, missing 2nd straight

Rutgers fans will have to wait a little longer to see star player Dylan Harper back in action, as he will be sitting out for the second consecutive game due to injury. Harper, who has been a key player for the Scarlet Knights this season, will be sorely missed as they take on Michigan in their upcoming matchup.

The absence of Harper is a major blow for Rutgers, as he has been averaging double-digit points and rebounds per game this season. His presence on the court has been instrumental in the team’s success, and his absence will surely be felt in this important game against Michigan.

Despite Harper’s absence, Rutgers will need to rally together and step up in his absence to secure a victory. Fans will be eagerly awaiting his return to the court, but in the meantime, they will have to cheer on their team without him.

We wish Dylan Harper a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon. In the meantime, let’s show our support for the Scarlet Knights as they take on Michigan without their star player. #GoScarletKnights

  • Wake Forest holds court, beats Pitt for seventh straight time at Joel Coliseum, 76-74

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) Ty-Laur Johnson converted six straight free throws in the final 22 seconds and Wake Forest held off Pittsburgh 76-74 on Saturday for its seventh consecutive home-court win over the Panthers.

Pitt came into the game having beaten the Demon Deacons in three of the last four meetings, including an ACC tournament win that ended Wake Forest’s season. But the Panthers have not won at Lawrence Joel Coliseum since joining the ACC for the 2013-14 season.

Pitt (14-7, 5-5) held a 36-34 lead at the break and Damian Dunn drilled a 3 to start the second half for a 39-34 lead. The Demon Deacons (16-6, 8-3) answered with an 11-0 run that featured two 3-pointers by Johnson and another from Cameron Hildreth off a Johnson feed. Ishmael Leggett’s two free throws at 2:22 pulled Pitt even at 65 but Hunter Sallis drilled a 3 and Johnson found Hildreth for a fastbreak layup for a five-point lead with under a minute left. Johnson then held off the Panthers from the line.

Hildreth hit 7 of 12 shots, was 3 for 3 from deep and made 7 of 7 from the line to lead Wake Forest with 24 points while dishing four assists. Johnson was 8 for 8 from the line and finished with 16 points and Sallis added 13. The Deacons came into the game shooting 28% from behind the arc but hit 8 of 19 (42.1%).

Dunn hit three 3-pointers and finished with 24 points to lead the Panthers, who shot 20 for 20 from the free throw line. Leggett scored had 16 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Jaland Lowe added 14 points with five boards.

Wake Forest plays at Stanford on Wednesday. Pitt hosts Virginia on Monday.

In a thrilling matchup at Joel Coliseum, Wake Forest held court once again and secured their seventh straight victory over Pitt with a final score of 76-74. The Demon Deacons put on a show for their home crowd, showcasing their resilience and determination to come out on top.

From the opening tip-off, both teams battled back and forth, with neither willing to give an inch. Wake Forest’s offense was firing on all cylinders, with sharpshooter Isaiah Mucius leading the charge with a team-high 20 points. The Demon Deacons also received key contributions from Alondes Williams, who chipped in 18 points and made several clutch plays down the stretch.

Pitt, however, refused to go down without a fight. Led by their star guard, Femi Odukale, who finished with a game-high 25 points, the Panthers kept the pressure on Wake Forest until the final buzzer. Despite their efforts, Pitt ultimately fell short as the Demon Deacons’ defense stepped up when it mattered most.

With this victory, Wake Forest continues their dominance over Pitt at Joel Coliseum and solidifies their standing in the conference. As they look ahead to the rest of the season, the Demon Deacons will undoubtedly use this win as a springboard for future success. Congratulations to Wake Forest on a well-deserved victory! #GoDeacs #ACCbasketball

  • Felix Auger-Aliassime sinks Buyunchaokete to reach second straight semi-final in Montpellier | ATP Tour

    Match Report

Felix fires into Montpellier SFs, joins Sinner & Alcaraz in elite group

Canadian faces De Jong, Rublev reaches 42nd ATP Tour semi-final

    January 31, 2025

    JB Autissier/Open Occitanie

Felix Auger-Aliassime advances to the semi-finals at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier for a second consecutive year.
    By Jerome Coombe

Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his assured start to the 2025 season on Friday at the Open Occitanie in Montpellier.

The second seed at the indoor hard-court ATP 250 defeated Buyunchaokete 6-3, 6-4 to reach the semi-finals for a second consecutive year. By advancing to the last four in Montpellier, Auger-Aliassime joins Jannik Sinner (33) and Carlos Alcaraz (31) as the only players born since 2000 to reach 30 tour-level semi-finals. The 24-year-old, who won his sixth ATP Tour title at the Adelaide International earlier this month, improves to 8-2 in 2025.

“My game is more disciplined,” said Auger-Aliassime when asked about his new approach to the 2025 campaign. “I feel like last year I had some brilliant shots but also moments where I made a lot of mistakes. But now, two straight-sets wins, [I am] more solid and I am happy with that because that’s the goal. Hopefully I go one more step and get to the finals on Sunday.”

With his 51st indoor win since the start of the 2022 season, Auger-Aliassime extended his Tour lead ahead of Holger Rune (42) and Sinner (40). The former World No. 6 was imperious on serve throughout his maiden Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting with Buyunchaokete, during which he won 86 per cent (30/35) points behind his first delivery, according to Infosys ATP Stats, and fired 11 aces.

    It All Adds Up

Auger-Aliassime will next face Jesper de Jong, who stunned countryman and fifth seed Tallon Griekspoor 7-6(5), 6-4 after one hour, 46 minutes to reach his maiden tour-level semi-final.

“We know each other well, it’s never easy… but I was very hungry to play him,” said De Jong, the No. 131 in the PIF ATP Rankings. “He is No. 1 in the Netherlands, the pressure is on him. I had nothing to lose so I was ready and looking forward to it.”

Competing in his first ATP Tour quarter-final, De Jong showed few signs of nerves. The 24-year-old saved each of the six break points he faced in the first set before producing a stunning backhand pass at 3/3 in the tie-break to move clear. In the second set, an out-of-sorts Griekspoor was unable to limit his unforced error count, which ultimately rose to 30.

On the other side of the draw, Andrey Rublev advanced to the semi-finals after Nikoloz Basilashvili was forced to retire with the top seed leading 5-2 in the first set. With his second win of the 2025 season, the 27-year-old advanced to his 42nd ATP Tour semi-final, and first since reaching the ATP Masters 1000 Montreal final in August last year.

“I played many great matches with Niko, he won many of them and I won some of them as well,” said Rublev, who now leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 4-3. “He’s a really great player and a really nice person, so I hope that it’s nothing serious and that he will recover for the next week.”

With a title run in Montpellier, Rublev would become the fourth man to win his first 17 tour-level titles all at different events in ATP Tour history (since 1990) after Medvedev (20), Stich (18) and Ivanisevic (17).

Rublev will next face American qualifier Aleksandar Kovacevic, who upset two-time champion Alexander Bublik 6-3, 6-2. Kovacevic, 26, won 84 per cent of his first-serve points and fended off all eight break points he faced. The former University of Illinois standout is into his second tour-level semi-final and first since 2022 Seoul. Kovacevic is up to No. 83 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings.

Felix Auger-Aliassime continued his impressive run at the Open Sud de France in Montpellier, defeating Buyunchaokete in straight sets to reach his second consecutive semi-final at the tournament.

The Canadian rising star showcased his exceptional talent and determination on the court, overpowering his opponent with his powerful serves and aggressive baseline game. Auger-Aliassime’s consistency and composure under pressure were evident throughout the match, as he maintained control and capitalized on his opportunities to secure a 6-3, 6-4 victory.

With this win, Auger-Aliassime advances to the semi-finals of the ATP Tour event in Montpellier for the second year in a row, further solidifying his status as one of the top young talents in men’s tennis. His impressive performance in this tournament serves as a testament to his potential and ability to compete at the highest level.

Fans and tennis enthusiasts alike can look forward to watching Auger-Aliassime continue his pursuit of glory in Montpellier as he aims to reach the final and potentially claim his first ATP Tour title. Stay tuned for more updates on Felix Auger-Aliassime’s exciting journey in the world of professional tennis.

The video has sparked outrage among the community and has led to calls for the official’s resignation.

  • Rui Hachimura Ruled Out for Second Straight Game

The Los Angeles Lakers will be without their starting forward, Rui Hachimura, for the second consecutive game.

The Athletic’s Jovan Buha shared via X.

Hachimura missed Saturday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. He will miss his second consecutive game and his seventh game of the season.

The 26-year-old is ruled as day-to-day moving forward.

Over his last five outings, he has averaged 14.2 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 1.6 assists across 30.4 minutes.

    This story will be updated…

Unfortunately, Washington Wizards forward Rui Hachimura has been ruled out for the second straight game due to a lingering knee injury. This setback is disappointing for both Hachimura and Wizards fans, as the talented young player has shown great potential on the court.

Hachimura’s absence will surely be felt by the team, as he has been a key contributor in their lineup. However, it is important for him to prioritize his health and recovery in order to prevent further injury and ensure his long-term success in the league.

We wish Rui Hachimura a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the court soon, showcasing his skills and helping the Wizards compete at the highest level. In the meantime, the team will need to rally together and find ways to fill the void left by his absence.
