Cavaliers lose 3rd straight as Rockets’ Amen Thompson gets triple-double in 135-131 win

BYU found that out the hard way Saturday night.
Kneepkens poured in a career-high 32 points, including six 3-pointers, and Mayè Tourè added 21 points and eight rebounds as Utah women’s basketball held off BYU 81-76 Saturday afternoon in front of an announced crowd of 4,889 fans at the Marriott Center.
It’s the third time in as many games that Kneepkens, who had just one shot in the first quarter, has scored at least 26 points in the past three games.
“When we get going, we’re really hard to guard,” said Kneepkens, who scored all but 5 of her points in the final three quarters. “It’s just figuring out how to do that for 40 minutes every game.”
Delaney Gibb led BYU with 19 points, five rebounds and five assists, including back-to-back 3-pointers in the fourth quarter that cut the deficit as low as 73-70.
But Kneepkins made seven consecutive free throws to help the Utes (15-5, 6-3 Big 12) ice a third straight rivalry win to improve to 69-43 all-time in the series.

But the first conference game between the two in-state rivals since both left the Mountain West in 2011 was all about Kneepkens, whose 2023-24 season ended early last Dec. 2 with a noncontact foot injury against the Cougars in an 87-68 win at the Huntsman Center.
“She had to work for everything she got,” Utah first-year head coach Gavin Petersen said of Gibb. “You’re not going to stop a player like that; she’s really good.
“But you’re not going to stop a player like this, too,” he added, signaling toward Kneepkens sitting next to him.
Utah struggled with turnovers early, including nine in the first quarter that led to 10 points for BYU and a 21-15 deficit through 10 minutes.
The Cougars’ season-long turnover bugaboo wasn’t much better, with seven in the first frame. But BYU converted 53.3% from the field, including 3-pointers by Whiting, Congdon and Emma Calvert and a balanced supporting cast to take the early 6-point advantage.
“We kind of shot ourselves in the foot with a lot of uncharacteristic unforced turnovers,” Petersen said.
Kneepkens gave the Utes their first lead of the game, capping an 11-0 run from distance with 5:03 left in the half.

It was 38-34 Creighton at the half but the Bluejays opened the second half with a 9-0 run to go ahead 47-34 before Addae-Wusu hit a 3-pointer.
Creighton led by as many as 26 in the second half.
Ryan Kalkbrenner led the Bluejays with 23 points and 9 rebounds and Steve Ashworth scored 17 with 9 assists.
Creighton is among four Big East teams currently projected in the Field of 68. Mike DeCourcy of FOX has them as a 9 seed.
The Hall returns home to play Providence on Tuesday. The Friars on Saturday beat former coach Ed Cooley and Georgetown, 78-68, at The Amp.
“I gotta be honest and I don’t care who gets mad, these Saturday-Tuesday games gotta stop,” Holloway said. “We have them more than anybody.
“Everybody else, why is Creighton playing Wednesday? Why we can’t play Wednesday?…It’s played out and it’s corny but when it rains it pours.”

Seton Hall’s struggles continued as they dropped their fifth straight game, falling to their opponent despite the absence of two key players. The team was already facing a tough stretch of games, but the absence of these players proved to be a major blow.The missing players were instrumental in the team’s success earlier in the season, and their absence was clearly felt on the court. The team struggled to find their rhythm and were unable to overcome the deficit, ultimately falling short once again.
Despite the disappointing result, Seton Hall remains hopeful that they can turn things around and get back on track. With their key players hopefully returning soon, the team is looking to bounce back and get back to their winning ways.
Fans are eagerly awaiting the return of these players and are hopeful that their presence will provide the team with the boost they need to secure some much-needed wins. In the meantime, Seton Hall will continue to work hard and prepare for their upcoming games in hopes of breaking their losing streak.

(the.ACC.com) – In anticipation of the ACC Huddle: Football Schedule Release special set for Monday, January 27, from 9-11 p.m. ET on ACC Network and simulcast on ESPN2 from 9-10 p.m. ET, the Atlantic Coast Conference has announced its schedule of games for Week 0 and Week 1. The lineup features five consecutive days of ACC Football over Labor Day Weekend, ensuring unparalleled action for fans to open the 2025 college football season.
The 2025 football season kicks off with seven ACC teams opening with Power 4 non-conference opponents, including Notre Dame, and five others with FBS foes over Week 0 and Week 1. The ACC’s Labor Day Weekend is anchored by a Sunday football doubleheader on August 31 featuring both Miami and Virginia Tech against top-25 competition.
The opening week concludes with North Carolina playing host to TCU on Labor Day Monday, September 1, as Bill Belichick makes his coaching debut on a familiar night.
The Sunday night showdown between Miami and Notre Dame will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC and the North Carolina against TCU primetime matchup on Monday night will start at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Week 0 and Week 1 – Featuring Five Straight Days of ACC Football over Labor Day Weekend• All 17 ACC football programs will be featured throughout Week 0 and Week 1 of the 2025 college football season, with Labor Day Weekend highlighted by 16 games over five days, Thursday, August 28, through Monday, September 1.
• The ACC will headline Sunday, August 31, with two pivotal early season matchups, as Miami will host Notre Dame at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, and Virginia Tech will meet South Carolina in the second of the two 2025 Aflac Kickoff games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta this season.
• The ACC will once again anchor college football on Labor Day Monday to wrap up the opening weekend of ACC football as Coach Bill Belichick will make his debut for North Carolina as the Tar Heels host TCU. This will mark the 16th straight year (the exception being the 2020 COVID season) that the ACC has played on Labor Day and the 19th year since Florida State and Miami played in the inaugural Labor Day night game in 2005.• The Labor Day Weekend action begins on Thursday, August 28, with NC State playing host to in-state foe East Carolina.
• Friday, August 29, will see the debut of new Wake Forest head football coach Jake Dickert as the Demon Deacons host Kennesaw State in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, for the two teams’ season openers.• The slate for Saturday, August 30, is highlighted by three ACC/SEC matchups, including a neutral site tilt between Syracuse and Tennessee in the first of two Aflac Kickoff Games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, a battle of the Tigers when LSU visits Clemson, and a matchup of two historical programs when Florida State plays host to Alabama. Georgia Tech will travel to Colorado for an ACC/Big 12 showdown, California will hit the road to take on Oregon State and Virginia will play at home versus Coastal Carolina in the two teams’ season opener.
• The other five ACC Week 1 contests include in-state matchups at home in Boston College versus Fordham, Duke against Elon, Louisville versus Eastern Kentucky, Pitt hosting Duquesne, and SMU versus East Texas A&M.
• The Stanford Cardinal will kick off its second season as a member of the ACC at Hawai’i on Saturday, August 23, in what has become the unofficial start of the college football season in Week 0.The ACC’s schedule model for the 2024-2030 seasons, which was revealed exclusively on ACC Network in October 2023, will continue with no divisions, feature 17 schools, and will once again include 68 conference matchups. Based on conference winning percentage, the top two teams will compete in the ACC Football Championship Game on the first Saturday in December at Bank of America Stadium in Uptown Charlotte, North Carolina.
Tomorrow, Friday, January 24, ACC PM will exclusively reveal the ACC opener for all 17 schools. ACC PM airs at 4 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
