Mavericks star guard re-evaluated for left calf strain
The Dallas Mavericks won’t have Luka Doncic for their first NBA Finals rematch against the Boston Celtics, but could he be available for the second and final meeting on Feb. 6?

Doncic, who has missed the last 15 games with a left calf strain, was re-evaluated Saturday afternoon, according to a person familiar with his injury. The superstar guard’s latest MRI was conducted exactly one month from when he suffered the injury on Christmas Day.
Kidd says there is no update to give yet about Doncic, although our @MikeACurtis2 reported earlier today that Doncic had an MRI this afternoon. Today is the one-month mark since Doncic strained his left calf.

Several reports have indicated that Doncic desires to return to the lineup before next month’s All-Star break [Feb. 14-16].
Doncic suffered a left calf strain in a loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Christmas Day and required crutches upon leaving the arena. He has since progressed from needing a scooter to get around American Airlines Center to walking on his own power since Jan. 7, when the Mavericks hosted the Los Angeles Lakers.
The Mavericks started the season 6-2 without Doncic and entered Christmas Day with the fourth-best record in the Western Conference. However, Doncic’s absence has led to a 5-10 record since his calf strain and the Mavericks own the seventh seed in the West.
The 11-12 overall record without Doncic may show promise, but the Mavericks need their franchise centerpiece in order to climb back up the Western Conference’s standings.
The Mavericks will host the Washington Wizards on Monday, just before a five-game roadtrip that includes stops in New Orleans, Detroit, Cleveland, Philadelphia and Boston — which falls Feb. 6, the NBA’s trade deadline. Spencer Dinwiddie hinted at Doncic’s impending return after Friday’s win at Oklahoma City.
“We’re going to have basically the best trade-deadline acquisition anybody could have: Bring the MVP back,” Dinwiddie said.
The good news is Doncic’s recovery appears to indicate that he’s making good progress toward a return to the court.

Georgia Power rate increases putting strain on utility assistance programs
ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – A Georgia Power rate increase kicked in the first of the year. The hikes are having devastating effects on programs that offer utility assistance.
The Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority, also known as FACAA, opened enrollment for its utility assistance program on Thursday.
Atlanta News First spoke with people who said the system crashed within the first 10 minutes and appointments were completely booked.
Patricia Benton doesn’t know how she will pay her utility bill this month.
“I’m on Social Security. I’m 72-years-old,” she said.
Benton was one of thousands of metro Atlanta seniors who tried to apply for the state’s Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as LIHEAP, in December but couldn’t due to high demand.
Benton and others were directed to try again on Tuesday when it was open to the public.
She said the same thing happened.
“It’s a bad experience. I couldn’t get help today. I experienced that we couldn’t get help today,” Benton said.
She’s not alone.
“Georgia Power going up about $45. My mom is a senior citizen. You need all the help you can get,” said Cassandra Bell.
Bell said she is trying to get assistance for her mother.
“I was trying to go online, and I guess everything was crashed. So, I came back over to try to seek help,” she said.
LIHEAP is a federally-funded program.
The funds are distributed by the state to local community action agencies.
“We had over 1,700 appointments in 12 minutes and over 1,400 phone calls in one day,” said Dr. Howard Grant, president of the Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority.
Grant said demand for utility assistance has skyrocketed.
“Because of those rate hikes we’re seeing a different look of the people who have a need traditionally. You would think poverty looks one way but now were starting to see a lot of middle-class.”
Grant said the state is working to improve the online system to handle the high volume of applicants.
“They are working very hard to come up with some new ways to really streamline this process,” he said.
Those who rely on the assistance say something needs to change.
“I really need it. I live by myself,” said Benton.
Said Bell: “People need help. You know, if you can’t get it where do you go.”
FACAA representatives said they are planning to host walk-in appointment events for utility assistance in the coming weeks.

PERTH, Australia (AP) — World No. 2-ranked Alexander Zverev withdrew from the United Cup mixed teams tennis tournament on Wednesday with a biceps strain less than two weeks from the start of the Australian Open.
The 27-year-old Zverev won his opening two singles matches of the season against Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro and China’s Zheng Zhizhen at the United Cup.
