  • CNN stunned by Trump poll: ‘Very much unlike what we saw 8 years ago’

Donald Trump’s first week as the 47th President of the United States has been a lot of shock and awe.

There have been a wave of executive orders and actions that we cannot yet truly know the full impact of. But at least one poll says that Americans approve of the chaos that he has unleashed in government since taking over again.

CNN data guru Harry Enten laid the numbers out, citing a Reuters/Ipsos poll heading into the weekend.

“Look the American people really like what they are seeing, at least compared to where Donald Trump started eight years ago,” Enten said as he pointed to a graphic on a screen behind him that showed Trump’s net approval rating at -3 points when he took office in January 2017 and at +6 points now.

“Back in January of 2017, Donald Trump became the first president in US History to start his presidency with a net negative approval rating,” Enten said. “Look at where we are now in January 2025, considerably better at plus-6 points.

“That’s up 9 points,” he continued. “To borrow a Donald Trump phrase, ‘That’s big league.’”

Enten said the poll “is a sign that the American people, at least initially, like what they are seeing.”

“It’s not just that he is doing better than he did eight years ago,” Enten said. “It’s that he is doing better than he ever did during his entire first administration.

“He was never over plus-3,” Enten added.

Enten said the numbers indicate that things have turned around.

“This is a very different Donald Trump,” he said. “He’s leading a very different administration the way he is attacking things, and the American public is very much more in line with him than they were his entire first term.”

Enten said that Trump is the only president to ever have a higher net approval rating in the first month of his second term than he had during the entirety of his first term.

“I don’t make stuff up,” he said. “The numbers are the numbers.”

CNN was left in shock after a recent poll revealed surprising numbers for former President Donald Trump. The poll, conducted by a reputable research firm, showed Trump with a higher approval rating than expected, leaving many scratching their heads.

In a segment on CNN, anchor Jake Tapper expressed his disbelief, stating, “This is very much unlike what we saw 8 years ago. Trump’s numbers are holding strong, despite everything that has happened in the past year.”

Political analysts on the network were quick to weigh in on the implications of the poll results, with many speculating on what it could mean for Trump’s future in politics. Some suggested that the poll numbers could be a sign of a potential comeback for the former president, while others cautioned against reading too much into a single poll.

Regardless of the interpretation, one thing was clear – the unexpected poll results had caught CNN off guard. As the network continues to analyze the data and the potential impact on the political landscape, one thing is certain: Trump’s influence is far from over.

  • Australian Open: USA’s Taylor Fritz stunned by veteran Gaël Monfils, who ‘inspired’ wife Elina Svitolina to own upset win

    CNN
     —

French veteran Gaël Monfils rolled back the years to stun the USA’s No. 4 seed Taylor Fritz in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday, winning 3-6 7-5 7-6(1) 6-4 after three hours and eight minutes of scintillating tennis.

The 38-year-old Monfils becomes the second-oldest male player in history after Roger Federer to reach the fourth round Down Under since the Australian Open moved to Melbourne Park in 1988, per the ATP.

During the very next match in the same Margaret Court Arena, Elina Svitolina, Monfils’ wife, ousted the women’s world No. 4, Jasmine Paolini, to complete a dream day for the family.

Monfils watched Svitolina’s win from her players’ box as the Ukrainian 28th seed also came from a set down to win 2-6 6-4 6-0 and reach the fourth round.

“It was a crazy battle. I got inspired after my husband’s win,” Svitolina said.

“I watched a little bit of that match, of course it was tough to miss.”

Monfils, a 13-time winner on the ATP Tour, sealed his victory on a booming ace – his 24th of the match – and proceeded to celebrate with a shimmy and a dance on-court, his moves and infectious smile drawing huge cheers from the crowd.

“I felt good. I felt in this moment I wanted to do that (dance),” Monfils told reporters. “I wanted to be myself. I had this in my mind so I just did what as in my mind. It was my way to express my joy.

“As I always say, I keep playing for those matches. Play a big player, big stadium, good crowd, good energy. When you’re 38 years old, it’s what I want and I had it. I was very fortunate to win it but it’s exactly why I’m playing.”

It was a near-perfect performance of skill, power and wit from Monfils after dropping the first set.

Fritz was unable to get to grips with Monfils’ varied game from the baseline, while the Frenchman’s serve was at times an unstoppable weapon.

Elina Svitolina won later on the same court.

Monfils, the world No. 41 and former world No. 6, is enjoying an incredible run to start his 22nd season on the tour; last week, he won the ASB Classic in Auckland to become the oldest player to ever win an ATP Tour title.

However, despite his early success in 2025, Monfils doesn’t believe he’s a contender at the Australian Open.

“Win?” he replied, wide-eyed with surprise when asked if he could win the title. “No. To be honest with you, it’s not even a dream to win the tournament. My dream is to be old with a lot of kids and healthy.

“That’s your dream, I guess, for me to win a slam,” he joked. “My dream is to have an unbelievable family. Tennis is cool, of course you want to have goals and dreams, but my dream is out there.”

Despite Fritz’s defeat, there remains a healthy contingent of US participants in the tournament, with Monfils facing American Ben Shelton in the fourth round on Monday.

Elsewhere, American teenage qualifier Learner Tien defeated France’s Corentin Moutet 7-6 (10) 6-3 6-3 to continue his dream run in Australia.

The 19-year-old, who had never before been past the first round of a slam, stunned fifth seed Daniil Medvedev in the previous round and will face Lorenzo Sonego on Monday.

No. 21 seed Ben Shelton also reached the fourth round with a 6-3 3-6 6-4 7-6(5) win over Italy’s No. 16 seed Lorenzo Muzetti, while unseeded 20-year-old American Alex Michelsen upset No. 19 seed Karen Khachanov 6-3 7-6(5) 6-2.

In the women’s draw, Madison Keys won the all-American clash against Danielle Collins 6-4 6-4, while Emma Navarro beat Ons Jabeur 6-4 3-6 6-4.

The Australian Open has kicked off with some surprising upsets, and one of the most shocking results came in the match between USA’s Taylor Fritz and veteran player Gaël Monfils. Monfils, known for his athleticism and shot-making abilities, managed to stun Fritz in a thrilling encounter.

What made the win even more special was the fact that Monfils’ wife, Elina Svitolina, was also in action on the same day and managed to pull off her own upset victory. Monfils later revealed that Svitolina’s win had inspired him to give his best on the court, and it clearly paid off.

Monfils’ victory serves as a reminder of the experience and skill that veteran players bring to the court, often causing upsets against younger opponents. It also highlights the importance of support from loved ones, as Svitolina’s success seemed to have a positive impact on her husband’s performance.

As the Australian Open continues, fans can expect more thrilling matches and unexpected results, making this tournament a must-watch for tennis enthusiasts around the world.

  • Naomi Osaka’s Inspirational Comeback Leaves Ex-Pro Stunned as She Builds High Anticipation Ahead of New Season

Naomi Osaka’s Inspirational Comeback Leaves Ex-Pro Stunned as She Builds High Anticipation Ahead of New Season

You need to have the will to fight more than the other person, and I feel like I finally found that again,Naomi Osaka, who started 2025 with a powerful statement, said on Wednesday. The former World No. 1 made her return to the spotlight by reaching her first WTA Tour quarterfinal in six months, defeating Julia Grabher 7-5, 6-3 at the ASB Classic in Auckland. Osaka, who admitted to not being a confrontational person, has caught the attention of an ex-WTA pro, who was best known for her angry on-court outbursts!

Last year was no walk in the park for the four-time Grand Slam champion. Returning from maternity leave after giving birth to her daughter Shai in 2023, Osaka faced a tough road. She didn’t advance past the second round in any Grand Slam or the Paris Olympics, and a back injury in October cut her season short. Her final record for the year, 22-17, reflected her struggles. Talking about her journey in an interview before the Auckland Open, she admitted, “I think 2024 humbled me, but I also feel like I grew a lot. I worked way harder than I’ve ever worked before.”

Despite the challenges, Osaka remained determined to turn things around and her resilience has not gone unnoticed by an ex WTA pro, Coco Vandeweghe.

On January 2nd, the ‘Tennis Channel’ podcast team, including Vandeweghe, Steve Weissman, and Prakash Amritraj, analyzed the United Cup semifinals and Osaka’s performance at the ASB Classic. Steve, the show’s host, recalled what said after her United Cup match.

“I was thinking about this last year, but I’m not a really confrontational person. But when you’re on the court, it’s like you’re in a boxing match. You need to have the will to fight more than the other person and I feel like I finally found that again. So I’m just really grateful for that,” said Osaka.

Vandeweghe, praising the Japanese star’s resilience, said, “I think it is the will to fight and the will to win because that’s the difference maker of when the chips are down and your back’s against the wall, can you push? Can you find that next gear?”

She added, “Last year, Naomi was still finding herself, finding the Naomi of new because she was always banking on the Naomi of old… Now it’s a different Naomi. She’s playing with a different motivation. And I think it’s really nice to see that she still has that fire in the belly.”

That fire has defined the 4-time Grand Slam champion’s career. In 2018, she shocked the world by defeating Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4 in the US Open final to win her first Grand Slam. She went on to claim three more major titles: the 2019 Australian Open, the 2020 US Open, and the 2021 Australian Open. These victories cemented her place in history as the first Japanese player to win a Grand Slam singles title and the first woman since Serena Williams in 2015 to win back-to-back majors.

However, after her 2021 Australian Open triumph, things took a difficult turn.

Osaka began grappling with mental health challenges, even publicly expressing that winning no longer brought her joy. These struggles, coupled with injuries and time away from the sport, created a bumpy road ahead. But while the 27-year-old is ready to brave it all, she has also given herself an ultimatum.

Naomi Osaka states she won’t ‘hang around’ for a long time

Naomi Osaka has made it clear that while she will put in her all for this season, if it does not yield good results, she might just hang up her racket.

Ahead of the ABS Classic, in an interview, she hinted the possibility of stepping away from the sport if she doesn’t meet her own standards. “I don’t think I’m the type of player that would hang around,” Osaka told reporters. “I have a lot of respect for all the players on tour, but the point of my life that I’m at right now, if I’m not above a certain ranking, I don’t see myself playing for a while. I’d rather spend time with my daughter if I’m not where I think I should be and where I feel like I can be.

Currently ranked No. 57, Osaka is focused on climbing back up the rankings and making her mark once again. She will face the victor of the Hailey Baptiste-Jodie Burrage match on Friday, potentially securing her first career semi-final since returning from maternity leave in 2024.

The ASB Classic is an important lead-up to the Australian Open, which begins on January 12. Osaka’s last appearance in Melbourne ended in a disappointing first-round loss, but this time, she’s determined to write a different story. With her newfound determination and fire, can Osaka replicate the glory of her 2019 and 2021 Australian Open wins?

Naomi Osaka’s Inspirational Comeback Leaves Ex-Pro Stunned as She Builds High Anticipation Ahead of New Season

Her resilience and determination have left fans and fellow players in awe, and now, as she prepares for the upcoming season, the anticipation is building for what she will achieve next.

Former professional tennis player and commentator John McEnroe has been particularly impressed by Osaka’s comeback, stating that he is “stunned” by her ability to overcome adversity and return to the top of her game. • The one television scene that stunned Meryl Streep

The one television scene that stunned Meryl Streep

In 2019, Meryl Streep seemingly grew weary of being one of the greatest actors in cinema history and decided she wanted to try her hand at being the best actor on television, too. She signed up to star in one of HBO’s most prestigious shows – a black comedy drama starring one of the most astonishing female casts ever assembled. Amazingly, though, on her first day on the show’s set, Streep witnessed something she’d never experienced before, and it both stunned and traumatised her in equal measure.

At a Vanity Fair panel conversation, Streep revealed that she got involved in the show when she received a call from her agent telling her, “Nicole wanted to ask you something”. The “Nicole” in question was, of course, Nicole Kidman, and when the Australian A-lister asked Streep if she ever saw herself working in television, she was intrigued. When Streep found out that Kidman wanted her to join the second season of the hit show Big Little Lies, though, she was extremely excited. After all, she was as big a fan of the first season as anyone else and was ecstatic that another season was in development.

When Streep heard that Kidman wanted her to play a character named Mary Louise, though, she knew it was meant to be. Neither Kidman nor Reese Witherspoon – her co-star on the show and one of the producing team – had any idea that “Mary Louise” is actually Streep’s legal name. Author Liane Moriarty did, though, and she envisioned Streep as the character in her novella that Big Little Lies season two is based on. By giving her Streep’s real name, she thought she could stack the deck in her favour for any potential casting down the line.

To everyone’s surprise, though, Kidman didn’t need to sell the role to Streep, and Moriarty didn’t need to use the “Mary Louise” lure. Streep essentially said yes on the spot without even reading the script, declaring, “It was the greatest thing on television, it really was. There isn’t a woman in this room who wouldn’t sign up.”

Fast forward to her first day on set, though, and Streep quickly discovered that Big Little Lies really was a showcase for the best actors in the game. Day one involved shooting an incredibly emotional scene with Kidman, playing her distrusting daughter-in-law, which required Kidman to go to a highly visceral place early in the shoot.

At the AFI Life Achievement Awards in 2024, Streep presented the trophy to Kidman and gushed about witnessing her prodigious acting ability in this scene. She revealed, “That’s the time when I really came within breathing distance of the formidable gifts Nicole has,” and added, “I haven’t recovered from that first day. I’ve never seen anything like that in my life.”

Streep was stunned by Kidman finding the requisite well of emotion within her at such an early stage and her ability to do multiple takes of the scene that were every bit as harrowing as the first. Streep exclaimed, “For me, it was traumatising because I thought, ‘This woman is a Valkyrie. How is she able to sustain that?’ Never letting up, never letting down.”

Interestingly, though, the first episode of the second season also included a scene in which Streep got to display her own volcanic eruption of emotion when Mary Louise let out a guttural scream at the dinner table. This time, the situation was reversed, with Kidman being stunned at Streep’s performance, which she described as “completely bone-chilling”.

It was during her guest appearance on the hit HBO series “Big Little Lies” that Streep delivered a tour de force performance that left audiences and critics alike in awe. In a pivotal scene, Streep’s character, Mary Louise Wright, confronts her daughter-in-law, Celeste (played by Nicole Kidman), with a chilling mix of vulnerability and manipulation. The raw emotion and intensity that Streep brought to the scene was nothing short of breathtaking, showcasing her unparalleled talent and ability to captivate viewers with every word and gesture.

Streep’s performance in this scene not only solidified her status as one of the greatest actors of our time but also served as a reminder of the power of television to showcase incredible talent in unexpected ways.
