As ICE knocks on doors in the suburbs, immigrant groups push solidarity
Federal agents knock on the door of a residence in Lyons during an immigration enforcement action over the weekend. Immigration authorities also have deployed in Palatine, Mundelein, Deer Park and Round Lake, advocates say.
BloombergAs deportations ordered by President Donald Trump spread across the suburbs, advocacy groups said they’re intensifying efforts to keep Latino immigrants informed and unified amid unease.
Federal authorities have deployed in multiple towns in recent days, including Deer Park, Palatine, Mundelein, Round Lake and Waukegan, immigrant leaders said.
“Rightfully so, our communities are fearful, they’re anxious, they’re stressed,” said Dulce Ortiz, executive director of Mano a Mano Family Resource Center in Waukegan.
Last weekend, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers “were just knocking on doors at an apartment complex in Waukegan,” Ortiz said. If the agency is “targeting people with criminal backgrounds, why aren’t they holding warrants?”
Immigrant Solidarity DuPage Coordinator Cristobal Cavazos headed to Palatine on Sunday after hearing of a contingent of ICE officers parked near a popular Hispanic grocery store.
“They say, they’re just looking for criminals, don’t worry. But in the process, they nab anybody that they can get,” Cavazos said.
Trump Border Czar Tom Homan told News Nation Wednesday that of “last count there were like 700,000 illegal aliens in this country with a criminal conviction. That’s our No. 1 target.”
Itzel Sernas was unnerved Sunday afternoon when a number of vehicles parked near the Deer Park Mexican restaurant where she works and agents with the ICE insignia got out.
Immigration advocates provided the Daily Herald with video taken at a Palatine apartment complex where residents saw ICE officials deployed. ICE has not confirmed any actions in Palatine yet.
Courtesy of Immigrant Solidarity DuPageThe officials surveyed the restaurant for a while and left.
“We were a little shocked,” Sernas said. “It is scary, but it’s sad (for) people who have lived here for so many years and are working hard. Why don’t you look for the people who are doing bad stuff instead of coming here and looking for people who are working hard?”
ISD and Mano a Mano spent weeks prior to the inauguration holding “Know Your Rights” sessions. Immigrant Solidarity is telling people, “Don’t talk, don’t open the door, don’t sign (anything) and ask to speak with a lawyer.”
“If they have no warrant, there is no obligation to open the door,” Cavazos said.
Still, undocumented longtime residents with jobs and families are looking over their shoulders, he noted.
“We’re trying to combat this paranoia with direct action and solidarity.”
ABC 7 reported an Elgin man without a criminal record was swept up by U.S. Marshals who had an arrest warrant for a relative Tuesday.
“I saw they were taking my dad through the side door. He was already in handcuffs; so, I didn’t know much,” daughter Janeth Lopez told ABC.
“No family deserves this,” she said in a GoFundMe post.
ICE has not yet responded to a Daily Herald request for information on suburban enforcement.
“Chicago was an outstanding operation,” Homan said Wednesday, adding agents have removed sexual predators, child predators, sex offenders, convicted murderers and numerous gang members.
“These were bad guys. It’s a dangerous operation, but we made Chicago a lot safer. The streets are a lot safer. It’s just a shame we can arrest these guys in the county jail, but they’re a sanctuary city, they won’t let us into the county jail.”
Other federal agencies like the FBI are assisting and “we want to increase the number of teams. We want to get the deportations up,” Homan said.
A “Know Your Rights” session is conducted by Immigrant Solidarity DuPage in December.
Joe Lewnard/jlewnard@dailyherald.com, December 2024Meanwhile, Viator House of Hospitality in the Northwest suburbs is not expecting any issues.
The not-for-profit organization hosts young men who escaped violence and crime in foreign countries and are legally in the U.S. pursuing asylum claims. Residents either work or attend school while at Viator.
“We are confident that their rights to be in the United States will be respected during this era,” Executive Director the Rev. Corey Brost said.
In recent days, reports have surfaced of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents knocking on doors in suburban neighborhoods, spreading fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities. In response, immigrant advocacy groups have been working tirelessly to push for solidarity and support among residents. The presence of ICE in suburban areas has heightened concerns among immigrant families, who fear being separated from their loved ones and facing deportation. In response, organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and local immigrant rights groups have been organizing Know Your Rights workshops, providing legal resources, and creating safe spaces for individuals to seek support.
One of the key messages from these groups is the importance of standing in solidarity with immigrant communities during this challenging time. By coming together and showing support for our neighbors, we can create a strong network of protection and advocacy against unjust immigration enforcement.
As ICE continues to target neighborhoods across the country, it is imperative that we stand united and speak out against these harmful actions. By working together to support and protect immigrant families, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate society for all. Let’s show our solidarity and stand up for justice.

Maryland Weather: Winter Storm Warning for Northern Suburbs
BALTIMORE — Brief warmup Saturday in advance of a coastal storm developing Sunday. This storm is expected to produce another round of accumulating snow across the metro area and heavy accumulations for northern suburbs.
At this time, the best chance for significant snowfall appears to be along and northwest of I-95, where totals could range from three to six inches. The eastern shore may see an inch or less.
WJZ has issued a First Alert Weather Day for Sunday due to the snow. Travel problems are anticipated as snow begins to accumulate, especially once temperatures fall below freezing. If you plan to head out to watch the Ravens game on Sunday evening, plan accordingly and allow extra time to reach your destination.
Bitter Cold Martin Luther King, Junior Day
At the same time this coastal low pulls moisture from the south, an artic blast will push in from the north. As the coastal storm moves north into New England, we will see bitterly cold temperatures in time for Martin Luther King, Junior Day. Temperatures will begin to fall across the area Sunday afternoon, winds out of the northwest will begin to funnel cold air into the region. Monday morning, temperatures will be in the teens with wind chills in the single digits.
WJZ First Alert Weather Days are also in effect for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday due to the extreme cold.
The coldest nights will be Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, with actual temperatures dipping into the single digits. Wind chills on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings will fall below zero in most areas, with some locations experiencing wind chills as low as the teens below zero. High temperatures on Tuesday afternoon will only reach near 20 degrees.
Weekend Slight Warmup
By the end of the week, temperatures will start to warm up slightly. Highs will climb to the upper 20s on Thursday and the mid-30s on Friday. Overnight lows will gradually rise as well, with Friday morning’s temperatures in the mid-teens and next Saturday morning’s around 20 degrees.
We will also need to monitor midweek closely as a major winter storm develops along the Gulf Coast. As the storm tracks northeast toward the Southeast Atlantic Coast, parts of Southern Maryland and the lower Eastern Shore may see snow on the northern fringes of the system. The most likely time frame for this event is late Tuesday into early Wednesday. Light snow accumulation is possible, but the extent will depend on the storm’s exact track.
Attention residents of the northern suburbs of Maryland! A winter storm warning has been issued for our area. Please be prepared for heavy snowfall, strong winds, and potentially hazardous driving conditions.Make sure to stock up on essential supplies, such as food, water, and medications, in case you are unable to leave your home for an extended period of time. It is also a good idea to have emergency kits in your car in case you get stranded on the road.
Stay updated on the weather forecast and heed any warnings or advisories from local authorities. Avoid unnecessary travel during the storm and stay indoors to stay safe.

Winter storm warning in effect for western suburbs Sunday; heavy snow possible | Headlines
The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for Loudoun County and winter storm watches for western Prince William and Fauquier beginning early Sunday morning.
The warning is in effect from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with heavy snow expected and total snow and sleet accumulations from 4 to 6 inches, according to the NWS Sterling forecast office.
A winter storm watch is in effect for northwestern Prince William and Fauquier counties from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the forecast calling for up to 5 inches of snow.
Across the rest of Northern Virginia, snow and ice accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected, the weather service said.
Areas shaded pink are under a winter storm warning Sunday. Areas shaded blue are under a winter storm watch.
The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Northern Virginia District crews will begin mobilizing this morning ahead of the storm.
Temperatures are anticipated to drop below freezing on Sunday and not rise above freezing until at least Friday.
“Please plan now to limit travel Saturday night into Sunday as slick road conditions are possible,” VDOT said in a news release.
VDOT Northern Virginia will have approximately 2,500 pieces of equipment working this storm, more than 800 of which will be dedicated to making subdivisions passable, the agency said Friday.
“A reminder that passable is defined as an at least 8-10′ wide path that is drivable with caution. Emergency vehicles, like fire trucks, are able to navigate the roads successfully,” the release said. “Overall, subdivision roads will likely not be bare pavement or plowed curb to curb.”
Throughout the storm, VDOT will continue to plow and treat roads as needed and will continue to put down abrasives for traction.
