Two of college football’s blueblood programs face off for a spot in the College Football Playoff semifinals. Georgia received a first-round bye after defeating Texas in the SEC championship on Dec. 7. Notre Dame defeated Indiana 27-17 in the first round to meet the Bulldogs in New Orleans. The Irish were unable to receive a bye as Notre Dame does not compete in a conference and the top four seeds are awarded to the highest-ranking conference champions.

While the Bulldogs escaped with an overtime win in the SEC title game, quarterback Carson Beck injured his throwing arm in the first half of the matchup. Beck will likely not play against Notre Dame, and redshirt sophomore Gunner Stockton will make his first career start against the Irish. Stockton played the entirety of the second half in the conference championship, finishing 12-16 for 71 yards and an interception.

Notre Dame is led by Riley Leonard under center and Jeremiyah Love at running back. Love tallied 108 rushing yards and a touchdown in Notre Dame’s first-round game with the Hoosiers. But the Irish are powered by their elite defense, as Marcus Freeman’s squad only allowed 20 or more points twice all season. One of the game’s biggest storylines is certainly how Stockton performs against one of the nation’s top-ranked secondaries, led by All-America safety Xavier Watts.

Georgia’s defense does not boast the same national rankings as the Irish, but the Bulldogs have playmakers as well, most notably, Butkus Award winner (best linebacker) Jalon Walker. This matchup should be a defensive battle as each squad averages over 1.5 takeaways per game.

Here’s how the two teams stack up:

    Georgia Stat Notre Dame
    11-2 Record 12-1
    31.9 Points Per Game 38.8
    21.8 Points Against 13.8
Nate Frazier (634 yards) Leading Rusher Jeremiyah Love (1,057 yards)
Arian Smith (750 yards) Leading Receiver Beaux Collins (445 yards)
Malaki Starks (73 tackles) Leading Tackler Jack Kisner (69 tackles)

The highly anticipated College Football Playoff at the Sugar Bowl will feature a thrilling matchup between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. The game is set to take place on January 1, 2023, at a time yet to be determined.

Both Georgia and Notre Dame come into this matchup with impressive seasons under their belts, boasting strong offenses and stout defenses. The Bulldogs will look to rely on their explosive offense led by star quarterback JT Daniels, while the Fighting Irish will counter with their formidable defense anchored by linebacker Jack Kiser.

With so much on the line, this game promises to be a thrilling and intense battle between two of college football’s top teams. Be sure to mark your calendars and tune in to watch the Georgia Bulldogs take on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in what is sure to be a game for the ages.

  • Why odds have shifted against Bulldogs in Sugar Bowl, playoffs

Why odds have shifted against Bulldogs in Sugar Bowl, playoffs

Georgia football boarded the bus to head to Caesars Superdome on Thursday back in the underdog role once more.

Notre Dame is a 1-point favorite to beat the Bulldogs in the Sugar Bowl CFP quarterfinal, which is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m.

The Irish originally opened as a 1-point favorite shortly after its 27-17 CFP first-round win over Indiana before the line quickly shifted to favor Georgia. The Bulldogs were as much as a 2-point favorite before the odds shifted back in Notre Dame’s favor on Wednesday night.

Per Draft Kings future odds, Georgia would be a 1-point favorite over Penn State with a win, while the Irish would be a 1-point underdog should that matchup occur.

Ohio State is a 6-point favorite over Texas in the Cotton Bowl CFP quarterfinal that will be played at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 10 at the Cotton Bowl in Arlington, Texas.

There are several possible explanations for why the odds in the Notre Dame game have shifted against the Bulldogs, among them the SEC’s less-than-stellar 7-5 record to date:

    • Florida 33, Tulane 8

    • Texas 38, Clemson 24

    • Ohio State 42, Tennessee 17

    • Navy 21, Oklahoma 20

    • Vanderbilt 35, Georgia Tech 27

    • Arkansas 39, Texas Tech 26

    • USC 35, Texas A&M 31

    • Missouri 27, Iowa 24

    • Michigan 19, Alabama 13

    • Illinois 21, South Carolina 17

    • LSU 44, Baylor 31

    • Texas 39, Arizona State 31

There has been some speculation from analysts that perhaps the SEC isn’t as good as it has been in past seasons, which was a hotly debated topic throughout the CFP committee’s rankings.

This, even though the SEC entered this season’s expanded 12-team CFP 16-6 in all-time college football playoff games dating back to its origin following the 2014 season.

The Big Ten entered these playoffs a cumulative 5-7, the ACC 6-6, the Big 12 was 1-6, the American 0-1 and the now-defunct Pac 12 was 2-3.

The SEC’s record against other conference teams since the playoff era (2014 season) was 14-4 entering into this postseason.

This season’s SEC saw a great deal more parity and depth, with home field advantage meaning more than ever. SEC teams ranked in the Top 25 finished the regular season just 16-15 in true road games this season.

The transfer portal had much to do with the SEC’s parity and certainly some of the success other teams have enjoyed in the playoff, particularly Ohio State.

The Buckeyes, the odds-on favorites to win the CFP have benefitted greatly from the addition of former Alabama safety Caleb Downs, Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins along with former Kansas State quarterback Will Howard.

Time will tell how it all plays out, and it’s a good bet there will be plenty of reflection after the CFP Championship Game plays out at 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 20 in Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

    Championship Odds

    (Per Fanduel)

    Ohio State +110

    Texas +380

    Penn State +460

    Georgia +750

    Notre Dame +750

The Georgia Bulldogs entered the college football playoffs as one of the favorites to win it all, but after a stunning loss to Alabama in the SEC Championship game, the odds have shifted against them in the Sugar Bowl.

With a matchup against the high-powered Michigan Wolverines looming, the Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them. The Wolverines have been on a roll, boasting a strong defense and a potent offense led by quarterback Cade McNamara.

Additionally, the Bulldogs will be without star receiver George Pickens, who suffered a torn ACL in the SEC Championship game. His absence will be a huge blow to Georgia’s passing game and could make it difficult for them to keep up with Michigan’s scoring.

On top of that, the loss to Alabama seemed to expose some weaknesses in Georgia’s defense, which had been touted as one of the best in the country. If they can’t tighten things up on that side of the ball, they could be in for a long night against the Wolverines.

While the Bulldogs still have a talented roster and a strong coaching staff led by Kirby Smart, the odds are now against them as they prepare for the Sugar Bowl. It will be crucial for them to regroup and refocus if they hope to make a run in the playoffs.

What to know about the Sugar Bowl, the college football playoff game postponed by New Orleans attack

The College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Allstate Sugar Bowl, which was postponed due to a deadly attack in New Orleans on New Year’s Day, will now be played today.

At least 14 people were killed and dozens injured in the attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. Police say the driver of a vehicle intentionally sped into a crowd, and officers shot and killed the suspect on the scene. Officials believe the attacker was inspired by ISIS.

On “CBS Mornings,” New Orleans Police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick expressed confidence in the city’s ability to safely host the game despite the tragedy.

“We think that we can keep this community safe. We have shown it time and time again,” she said. “Although this event is a tragic one, and many people are grieving, we know that we can, and have proven, to be able to take a mass scale event like today and still create a safe environment … I think the game should go on today.”

Originally set for 7:45 p.m. CST on Wednesday, the game now will kick off at 3 p.m. CST on Thursday.

Below is more about the Sugar Bowl.

Who’s playing in the Sugar Bowl?

Why the Sugar Bowl was postponed

The game was initially postponed for 24 hours following the attack, with officials prioritizing enhanced security measures. However, after requests from Notre Dame, Georgia and the College Football Playoff, authorities in New Orleans agreed to move the kickoff to earlier in the day.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families as we work through this,” said Jeff Hundley, the chief executive officer of the Allstate Sugar Bowl. “We have full faith and confidence in the governor and the mayor and all the federal, state, and local first-responders that they’ve applied to this horrific event. Any time we have an event like the Sugar Bowl, public safety is paramount, and all parties involved agree that could only be achieved with a postponement.”

  • A final prediction for Notre Dame vs. Georgia in the Sugar Bowl

A final prediction for Notre Dame vs. Georgia in the Sugar Bowl

    .

    .

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Georgia Bulldogs will complete the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff this afternoon.

While the staff here at Fighting Irish Wire have already made its picks, I wanted to update mine a bit after seeing what has transpired prior to the Irish and Bulldogs getting on the field.

The three teams who have had a bye, haven’t fared well in this round of the CFP, each of them losing over the last few days. While this is a good sign for Notre Dame, it won’t necessarily push them over the edge.

What might is that the Bulldogs will be missing multiple players, either to injury, opt outs and entering the portal. As we all know, and if you didn’t, the Irish have yet to see any player leave following the conclusion of the regular season.

I’m going to stick with my pick that Notre Dame upsets Georgia 31-14, and the Irish move on to face Penn State in the semifinals.

This article originally appeared on Fighting Irish Wire: A final prediction for Notre Dame vs. Georgia in the Sugar Bowl

As the highly anticipated Sugar Bowl matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia approaches, fans and analysts alike are buzzing with excitement and speculation. Both teams are coming off impressive seasons, with Notre Dame boasting a 10-2 record and Georgia finishing with an impressive 11-1 record.

In this final prediction for the game, I believe that Georgia will ultimately come out on top. The Bulldogs have a powerhouse offense led by quarterback Jake Fromm and a strong defense that has proven to be a force to be reckoned with all season. Notre Dame, while a formidable opponent, may struggle to keep up with Georgia’s high-powered offense.

That being said, Notre Dame is known for its resilience and never-say-die attitude, so I expect a hard-fought battle between these two teams. Ultimately, I predict that Georgia will edge out Notre Dame in a close and competitive game, securing a victory in the Sugar Bowl.

No matter the outcome, this game is sure to be a thrilling and memorable matchup between two top-tier teams. So grab your popcorn and get ready for an exciting showdown in the Sugar Bowl!

  • Laura Rutledge reveals what led to new Sugar Bowl start time between Notre Dame, Georgia

Laura Rutledge reveals what led to new Sugar Bowl start time between Notre Dame, Georgia

ESPN’s Laura Rutledge had all the latest this morning in an update on how today’s plans came to be for the rescheduled playoff quarterfinal with the Sugar Bowl.

Rutledge, who has been in New Orleans for the bowl and since been covering it following the terror act in the city on Bourbon Street in the early hours of New Year’s Day, gave an update on how it all went in setting the game between No. 2 Georgia and No. 7 Notre Dame for today at 4 p.m. ET. She said it was a large conversation considering who all was involved in it yesterday afternoon.

Get your team’s official College Football Playoff watch from AXIA by CLICKING HERE: “Watches that tell so much more than time”

“Well, it was a lot of discussion that got to that point – first off, the discussion between the Sugar Bowl officials, the College Football Playoff, the teams, the FBI, the city of New Orleans,” Rutledge noted this morning on ‘Get Up’.

“That was a long meeting that happened yesterday midday when they were trying to figure out exactly what they would do.”

However, with the semifinal to follow just a week away, the Bulldogs and Fighting Irish wanted kickoff to be earlier than the original time would have been last night at 8 p.m. ET. It wasn’t what anyone wanted to be considering but, with the football aspect of it, the programs preferred to play as soon as they could do so on Thursday.

“The reason why they landed at 4 p.m. eastern, three central is because there is an extremely quick turnaround for whichever team wins this game into the Orange Bowl, which is a week away so less time to prepare for the team that will play Penn State in that game,” Rutledge said.

“As you said so well, all of that pales in comparison to what happened here and the tragedy, certainly, that occurred. But these teams did have to think about the schedule and doing what’s best for the athletes and everybody involved, right,” said Rutledge. “The postponement of 24 hours? At first, we thought that meant it would be a true 24 hours, it would be a game happening tonight but we started to get word that both teams, especially, were pushing toward the earlier start time, as early as possible start time, for today.”

As for the game this afternoon, Rutledge said it has received even more increased security. As she put it per law enforcement in NOLA, the Caesars Superdome is now as safe as anywhere in the city today following those events.

“There was a lot of information about the extra security here at the Superdome. I can tell you that’s been beefed up big time,” said Rutledge.” It is a second layer of security. I actually just went through it to get into this building and you go through the initial check and then you go through another full check – almost like a TSA-type situation where you’re going to put your bag through everything. That was something that they implemented as soon as they found out we would be playing this game. They wanted to add as much security as possible.”

“I had one law enforcement official tell me the Superdome may be the safest place in New Orleans today,” Rutledge added.

Laura Rutledge, ESPN’s college football reporter, recently sat down for an exclusive interview to reveal what led to the new start time for the Sugar Bowl matchup between Notre Dame and Georgia.

In the interview, Rutledge explained that the decision to change the start time of the game was made in order to accommodate both teams’ travel schedules and give them ample time to prepare for the highly anticipated showdown. She also mentioned that the new start time was strategically chosen to maximize viewership and ensure that fans across the country could tune in to watch the game.

Rutledge went on to discuss the significance of the Sugar Bowl as a prestigious postseason game and highlighted the excitement surrounding the matchup between two powerhouse programs like Notre Dame and Georgia. She expressed her own enthusiasm for the game and predicted that it would be a thrilling and closely contested battle between two talented teams.

Overall, Rutledge’s insights shed light on the behind-the-scenes decisions that go into scheduling college football games and offered fans a glimpse into the thought process behind the new start time for the Sugar Bowl. With her expertise and insider knowledge, Rutledge continues to be a trusted source for all things college football.

On Thursday at 4 p.m. Eastern time, No. 7 Notre Dame will square off against No. 2 Georgia in the Allstate Sugar Bowl from the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The winner will move on to play No. 6 Penn State in the Capital One Orange Bowl, which is the College Football playoff semifinal this season.
