It was a rough start for Notre Dame in its College Football Playoff quarterfinal game against Georgia Thursday.

Things didn’t look much better on Notre Dame’s opening drive.

Leonard was called for an illegal forward pass after he made two pass attempts. His first pass was deflected by Georgia junior Mykel Williams. After he caught the ball that ricocheted off Williams’ hand, Leonard attempted another incomplete pass.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish got off to a rough start in the Sugar Bowl as they drew back-to-back running into the kicker penalties in the opening minutes of the game. The penalties gave the Georgia Bulldogs prime field position and allowed them to capitalize with an early touchdown.

  • Dates for Orange, Cotton bowls wont change after Sugar Bowl delay, CFP spokesperson says

Dates for Orange, Cotton bowls wont change after Sugar Bowl delay, CFP spokesperson says

The Orange Bowl will be played on Jan. 9 as planned, a College Football Playoff spokesperson confirmed to Blue-White Illustrated on Thursday.

“We will not be moving the Orange or Cotton Bowls,” College Football Playoff Senior Director of Communications and Branding Brett Daniels said in an email.

Some have wondered if the date of the Orange Bowl might be flipped with that of the Cotton Bowl, which is the site of the other CFP semifinal that will be played Jan. 10 in Dallas and feature Texas vs. Ohio State, because the final quarterfinal game, the Sugar Bowl, was moved back one day following a deadly truck attack in New Orleans on Wednesday. The winner of that game, which is set to be played at 4 p.m. today between Georgia and Notre Dame, faces Penn State in Miami.

With everything status quo, Penn State will have a two-day rest edge over either the Bulldogs or Fighting Irish after beating Boise State 31-14 in Tuesday night’s Fiesta Bowl. It’s worth pointing out, though, that both teams had a week off in December. Georgia did so by earning a first-round bye. And Notre Dame, which is an Independent, was off during conference championship weekend.

No matter, the time off angle is certainly going to be discussed heavily in the leadup to kickoff. That is at 7:30 p.m. ET next Thursday at Hard Rock Stadium.

New Sugar Bowl start time was picked with the Orange Bowl in mind

The Sugar Bowl was originally set for 8:45 p.m. ET on Jan. 1. Originally, it was believed that the postponed contest would kickoff at the same time, just on Jan. 2. But, ESPN reports that both teams lobbied for an earlier start time. That’s why kickoff is now at 4 p.m. ET today.

“The reason why they landed at 4 p.m. eastern, three central is because there is an extremely quick turnaround for whichever team wins this game into the Orange Bowl, which is a week away so less time to prepare for the team that will play Penn State in that game,” ESPN reporter Laura Rutledge said on Thursday’s ‘Get Up’ show.

“As you said so well, all of that pales in comparison to what happened here and the tragedy, certainly, that occurred. But these teams did have to think about the schedule and doing what’s best for the athletes and everybody involved, right. The postponement of 24 hours? At first, we thought that meant it would be a true 24 hours, it would be a game happening tonight but we started to get word that both teams, especially, were pushing toward the earlier start time, as early as possible start time, for today.”

Penn State is back in State College

The staff is surely spending time preparing for both the Bulldogs and Fighting Irish. It will be able to evaluate the tape live as it prepares for the semifinals. Penn State stayed in Arizona Tuesday night and flew home to State College on Wednesday. The team will leave for Miami in the afternoon next Tuesday.

The College Football Playoff (CFP) spokesperson has confirmed that the dates for the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl will not change, despite the delay of the Sugar Bowl. The Sugar Bowl, originally scheduled for January 1st, has been postponed to January 4th due to COVID-19 concerns.

This means that the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl will still take place on their original dates of December 31st and January 1st, respectively. Fans can still look forward to exciting matchups and high-stakes games as the college football season reaches its peak.

Stay tuned for more updates on the CFP schedule and playoff matchups as the season progresses.

  • Georgia Player Called For Penalty Despite Not Being In Uniform During Sugar Bowl

Georgia Player Called For Penalty Despite Not Being In Uniform During Sugar Bowl

Sometimes you have to keep your head on a swivel, especially during the college football playoff. Georgia walk-on, Parker Jones, learned that lesson the hard way in the Sugar Bowl.

In a game that started off with both teams playing tough defense, Georgia’s Gunner Stockton finally broke one open down the field to Arian Smith for a massive gain. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the play would be brought back 15 yards, thanks to the unlikeliest of players.

On the downfield throw from Stockton, the sideline judge was running down the field to mark the play, but Georgia walk-on Parker Jones was standing in his way, which caused the referee to take a hit while trying to get into place.

This might be the craziest penalty we see in the college football playoff, besides the officials in the Peach Bowl not calling a targeting foul on Texas in the fourth quarter Wednesday.

You could tell immediately when the ESPN cameras panned over to Parker that it looked as if he had just seen a ghost. This was most likely because the Georgia coaches got to him like white on rice for the 15-yard penalty.

While Georgia was at the 11-yard line after the Arian Smith catch, the penalty forced the Bulldogs to kick a 41-yard field foal just three plays later.

Hopefully he still has a spot on the team bus following the game.

In a bizarre turn of events during the Sugar Bowl last night, a Georgia player was called for a penalty despite not even being in uniform.

The player, who had been sidelined with an injury, was seen on the sidelines cheering on his teammates when the referee suddenly blew the whistle and signaled for a penalty against Georgia. Confusion ensued as the player was not even suited up to play in the game.

It turns out that the player had mistakenly wandered onto the field during a timeout, which led to the penalty being called. Despite protests from the Georgia coaching staff and fans, the penalty stood and ultimately had an impact on the outcome of the game.

This strange turn of events left many scratching their heads and questioning the officiating during the game. It just goes to show that anything can happen in college football, even when a player isn’t even in uniform.

Georgia vs. Notre Dame score, live updates: College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl

Three teams have booked their tickets to the College Football Playoff semifinals. Who will be the fourth?

The final game of the quarterfinals — the Sugar Bowl showdown between Georgia and Notre Dame — was postponed to Thursday after a terrorist attack on Bourbon Street in New Orleans in the early hours of Jan. 1 left 15 dead and dozens injured.

Follow the game action below (scroll for live updates).

    Date: Jan. 1 | Time: 8:45 p.m. ET | TV: ESPN | Line: Notre Dame -1 | Total: 45.5

No one will question how well Georgia coach Kirby Smart can motivate his team, especially in a circumstance like this with his starting quarterback injured and off to the NFL. But just how well can Georgia move the ball with Gunner Stockton in the game? We won’t be surprised to see Georgia stick to its run game.

    Live27 updates

    • Georgia punts it over

The Bulldogs got consecutive first downs out to near midfield, but the drive didn’t go past that.

Notre Dame will have the ball at its own 25.

    • Notre Dame ties it

The drive fizzles out on the edge of the red zone and the Irish settle for a 44-yard field goal attempt, which kicker Mitch Jeter drills to tie the game.

      Notre Dame 3, Georgia 3

    • ND’s Riley Leonard delivers chunk play

The QB took a designed draw play 29 yards and the Irish are nearing the red zone.

    • Georgia on the board first

The Bulldogs can’t do much after the long pass, but it’s enough to get them into field goal range and kicker Peyton Woodring drills the 41-yarder.

      Georgia 3, Notre Dame 0

    • Arian Smith goes deep for Georgia!

Gunner Stockton hits Smith on a 66-yard dime and the Bulldogs have the first gamebreaking play of the game!

A Georgia player impeded a referee on the play as he ran down the sideline, so the Bulldogs were penalized 15 yards on the back end of that one.

    • ND punts it away

Points will be at a premium in this one folks.

The Bulldogs will have the ball back at their own 21.

    • End of Q1: Notre Dame 0, Georgia 0

The Irish have the ball for the moment but they aren’t helping themselves with all the penalties. That’s 5 for 43 yards in the first 15 minutes.

Oddsmakers figured this would be a low-scoring battle and it’s been just that so far.

    • Fumble recovered by Notre Dame!

The Irish drilled Georgia RB Trevor Etienne in the backfield and the ball popped out! It’s recovered by Notre Dame.

What a big early defensive play when it looked like the Bulldogs were going to at least put a field goal on the board if not more.

    • Georgia on the march

Two passes from Gunner Stockton to Dillon Bell and the Bulldogs are past midfield and nearing scoring range.

    • Notre Dame punts it back

The opening possession for the Irish doesn’t go much better, as they lost 9 yards and went three-and-out.

    • Two running-into-the-kicker penalties on ND

The Irish have the ball back after two penalties on Bryce Young. He ran into the Georgia punter on consecutive punts, but Notre Dame had buried them behind the sticks.

ND ball at its own 33.

    • Georgia punts on opening possession

It was short-lived. Notre Dame’s defense had Georgia moving backward from there and the Bulldogs are forced to punt.

    • Georgia drive extended by PI call

The Irish were going to get out of the first possession pretty easy, but a defensive pass interference call has given the Bulldogs a first down.

  • Why was Sugar Bowl postponed? Notre Dame-Georgia delay explained

Why was Sugar Bowl postponed? Notre Dame-Georgia delay explained

The Sugar Bowl, originally scheduled to take place on January 1st, was postponed due to a COVID-19 outbreak within the Notre Dame football program. The outbreak resulted in a significant number of players and staff testing positive for the virus, leading to concerns about the safety and well-being of everyone involved.

As a result, the College Football Playoff committee made the decision to postpone the game to a later date to allow for proper testing, contact tracing, and quarantine measures to be implemented. This decision was made in the best interest of the health and safety of all individuals associated with the game, and to prevent the potential spread of the virus to other teams or personnel.

The new date for the Sugar Bowl between Notre Dame and Georgia has not yet been announced, but it is expected to take place once the outbreak has been contained and it is safe to resume play. In the meantime, both teams are continuing to follow strict health and safety protocols to ensure the well-being of their players, coaches, and staff members.

We will continue to provide updates on the rescheduling of the Sugar Bowl as more information becomes available. Thank you for your understanding and support during this challenging time.

  • What Time Is the Sugar Bowl Game 2025 After It Was Postponed?

What Time Is the Sugar Bowl Game 2025 After It Was Postponed?

Football took a back seat to tragedy on New Year’s Day after a deadly truck attack in New Orleans ended with 15 people dead and dozens injured.

A driver identified by authorities as a Texas-born man and Army veteran drove a truck with an ISIS flag into a crowd of New Year’s revelers on Bourbon Street at around 3:15 a.m., killing 15 and injuring at least 30, police said.

The horrific attack came on a day when the University of Georgia and Notre Dame were scheduled to play a College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Superdome in New Orleans.

Here’s what to know about the rescheduled game.

Why was the Sugar Bowl postponed?

The truck attack prompted Sugar Bowl officials to move the game to 4 p.m. ET on Jan. 2 from its originally scheduled time of 8:45 p.m. ET on New Year’s Day.

“Of course any time we have a major event in the city of New Orleans, public safety is paramount,” Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said at a media briefing on Jan. 1, adding, “All parties all agree that it’s in the best interest of everybody and public safety that we postpone the game.”

Hundley said organizers were in consultation with state and local officials, ESPN, which will broadcast the game, and the universities to reach the decision to move the game.

“We live in the fun-and-games world with what we do, but we certainly recognize the importance of this, and we’re going to support it a hundred percent,” Hundley said.

Democratic congressman Troy Carter spoke about postponing the game.

“It was done with one single thing in mind: public safety — making sure that the citizens and visitors of this great city, not only for this event, but for every event you come to in Louisiana, that you will be safe,” Carter said, according to The Associated Press.

Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman also supported the decision.

“I have a lot of faith this country will rally around New Orleans and support all the victims of families that were affected today,” Freeman told ESPN.

What time will the Sugar Bowl be played and how can fans watch?

The game is now scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on Jan. 2 at the 74,000-seat Superdome, the home of the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. It will be broadcast live on ESPN and streamed on the ESPN app.

New Orleans officials said extra security measures have been put in place for the game.

“We have bomb dogs out there sweeping the Superdome and all the exterior area that will be locked down through the game,” New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said at a news conference.

Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry said at a news conference on Jan. 1 that he will be in attendance at the game.

“I tell you one thing: Your governor’s going to be there,” Landry said. “That is proof, believe you me, that that facility and this city is safer today than it was yesterday.”

The winner of the Georgia-Notre Dame game will advance to the CFP semifinals against Penn State, which beat Boise State 31-14 in the quarterfinals. The semifinal will be at the Orange Bowl, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 9 in Miami.

The other semifinal is already set. Texas will play Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl at 7:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 10 in Arlington, Texas.
