Suicide Squad goes free less than a year after launch in January 2025’s PS Plus games

It’s a new year, but more importantly it’s a new month, which means that Sony is ready to give a new stack of games to PS Plus subscribers. Among the January 2025 PS Plus games is the excellent The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe, and Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered, both of which are excellent additions to the service. Also, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League is there.

All of January’s PS Plus games will be available to subscribers from January 7, 2024 until February 3, 2024, regardless of their subscription tier.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was first released on February 2, 2024 as a co-op action-adventure game with live service elements. It released to very middling reviews, averaging 60/100 on review score aggregator Metacritic, and while it did get some post-launch DLC, including new playable characters, it didn’t do much to help rescue the title and support for it will be ending this month.

Our own review for Suicide Squad wasn’t particularly glowing, either, with GLHF’s Kirk McKeand giving the game a 5/10 and blaming the live service elements for its downfall:

Those who are looking for a great story from some of the best storytellers in the business will be left disappointed by how hamstrung it is by its live service trappings, and those who want to shoot numbers out of things will wonder where the meaty endgame content like raids are. On the one hand, some of this stuff can be fixed with regular updates, but on the other, that’s another studio we’ve lost to “player engagement” metrics.

Still, free with PS Plus is a pretty good price for a game you otherwise might not have picked up.

On a more positive note, The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is a fantastic pickup, especially if you’ve never played it before. It’s an “expanded re-imagining” of the original 2013 narrative puzzle game, with heaps of new additions, new choices, and new secrets, as well as a host of visual and accessibility upgrades. It’s a fantastic game with an ending that makes absolutely sense — but we won’t spoil that particular ending just yet.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered is pretty good too, but needs much less explanation. It’s a remaster for Need for Speed Hot Pursuit – the 2010 game, not the 1998 game – that includes all the DLC, cross-platform multiplayer, and more. If you like racing games, you’d be hard pressed to go past this one.

In the meantime, you have a few more days to pick up last month’s PS Plus games — It Takes Two, Aliens: Dark Descent, and Temtem will be available on PS Plus until January 6, 2025.

The first PlayStation Plus games of 2025 include The Stanley Parable and Suicide Squad

Sony just revealed the first set of PlayStation Plus games in 2025 available for all subscribers, regardless of what service tier they’re signed up for. Up this month are Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe. I can’t say it’s the most exciting set of games, but at the very least The Stanley Parable is a classic, albeit an old one — the game was first released way back in 2011 as a mod for Half-Life 2. The game then got a proper full release in 2013, and the Ultra Deluxe version was released for modern consoles in 2022.

Original creators Davey Wreden and William Pugh put together the Ultra Deluxe edition, with an expanded script and a number of other new changers that the developers weren’t exactly forthcoming about: “Everything you remember has been recreated, yet it’s different somehow. We’ve been here before, haven’t we?” Broadly speaking, though, the game expands on the original with more choices, more dialog and more choices for the player to navigate. If you haven’t given the game a shot, you now have no excuse not to check it out.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered is another oldie — released originally in 2010, but updated for the PS4 in 2020. That’s the version available here, with full career modes for either a racer or cop, depending on which side of the law you feel like being on. This version also includes multiplayer modes and all the DLC that was released for the original game.

Finally, the newest game in the batch is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, a live service game that went through multiple delays, got largely negative reviews and reportedly cost Warner Bros. some $200 million. Adding insult to injury, developers announced that the current season of content would be its last, though there are no plans to shut the game down yet. Given that it only came out this past February, that’s a pretty short lifespan. I’m not sure that I’d want to jump onto the sinking ship at this point, but at least you can give it a shot without shelling out the $70 it still costs.

All these games are available as of January 7 to PS Plus subscribers, and you have until then to add December’s games to your library.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe launch January 7 for PlayStation Plus members*.

Let’s take a closer look at the games.

Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League | PS5

Take down The Justice League yourself in single-player or team up with friends in multiplayer co-op in this genre-defying, action-adventure third-person shooter from Rocksteady Studios, creators of the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series. Featuring an original narrative set within an expansive open-world city of Metropolis, the game puts the four DC Super-Villains on a collision course with an invading alien force and DC Super Heroes who are now laser-focused on destroying the city they once vowed to protect. All the while, the Suicide Squad must be mindful of the lethal explosives implanted in their heads that could go off at the first sign of defiance. Each squad member has their own unique moveset with enhanced traversal abilities to freely explore the dynamic open-world of Metropolis, along with a variety of weapons to customize, and skills to master.

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered | PS4

Feel the thrill of the chase and the rush of escape in Need for Speed Hot Pursuit. Unleash a savage sense of speed both as an outlaw and a cop in the world’s hottest high-performance cars. Outsmart the heat or take down lawbreakers with the tactical weaponry at your disposal in a heart-pumping, socially competitive racing experience. Updated with enhanced visuals, cross-platform multiplayer – including the asynchronous competition powered by Autolog – plus all additional DLC content, this is the ultimate edition of Criterion Games’ critically acclaimed Need for Speed debut. It’s time to reignite the pursuit.

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe | PS4, PS5

The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe is an expanded re-imagining of the critically acclaimed, award winning indie game The Stanley Parable from 2013. Everything that was in the original Stanley Parable is here, preserved just like it was back in 2013. But The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe also dramatically expands the world of the original game with new content, new choices, and new secrets to uncover. The labyrinth has just gotten bigger. In addition, the game has been visually upgraded to reflect modern technology while faithfully preserving the tone of the original game. Accessibility features have also been added to the game, including localization of in-world text, colorblind options, and content warnings. And just as before, the impeccable voicework of Kevan Brighting will accompany you every step of the way.

All three games will be available to PlayStation Plus members on January 7 until February 3.

  • ‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer Pushes Back Against Criticism For His Support Of James Gunn And ‘Superman’

‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer Pushes Back Against Criticism For His Support Of James Gunn And ‘Superman’

Harley (Margot Robbie) is locked away like the Ayer Cut in Suicide Squad (2016), Warner Bros. Pictures

For the ordeal he went through at the hands of Warner Bros., Suicide Squad director David Ayer can (rather hyperbolically) be called an ‘innocent victim’ of the chaos that sustained the DCEU up until 2023. He’s been vocal about his experience making the 2016 film, which was taken from him and recut drastically.

His vision ruined and most none the wiser about that for years, Ayer garnered a lot of sympathy for his plight resulting from being denied by a corporate bureaucracy and misrepresented in the media. Like Zack Snyder, there were calls for his version of the Squad to be released, which might have righted a few wrongs.

The campaign for the release of the Ayer Cut quieted down but never actually went away. A renewed push was ready to roll out simultaneously with the Superman teaser trailer, which Ayer did not want to interfere with. He made this wish known on X, urging his supporters to hold off and let James Gunn’s film soak up the attention.

David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) is excited for Superman on X

“I didn’t realize James was dropping Creature Commandos when the last Ayer cut campaign hit,” Ayer wrote. “The new Superman trailer is dropping soon and I know there’s intentions of another campaign for my version of Skwad.”

“As a film makers I want to support other film makers. I’m excited to see the trailer and have heard through the rumor mill it’s pretty incredible,” he added, “I just want to publicly say it would be nice to stay far clear of Thursday for any campaigning.”

His post concluded, “I appreciate everyone hearing me out. At the end of the day I’m riding a tiger here. Just going in heard on this,” punctuated by a praying-hands emoji.

    Bad guy over th-Ayer
David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) doesn’t want to be the bad guy on X

Unfortunately, Ayer’s attempt to be diplomatic and positive backfired with a section of DC fandom, and he went back on X to address it.

“My Lord. If supporting another film maker is so contentious, I’m just lost at this point,” he began in a second post. “When I was a kid I had a nightmare childhood. My best friends were comic books. They held me and gave me company when no one else did.”

“Batman spoke to my injured soul. Superman’s optimism was an example how to see the world without darkness,” he said.

    Joker and Harley-alex ross rendition
Jared Leto and Margot Robbie pose as Joker and Harley in a tribute to Alex Ross in Suicide Squad (2016), Warner Bros. Pictures

“I cannot f-king wait to see Jame’s trailer. Real talk. And I cannot wait to see his film. And absolutely am sure he crushed it. Because that simple optimism of Superman is all over it. And the little kid in me needs that right now,” Ayer continued.

“I’m a bad guy for that? So be it,” he added. “I do troll what I can control. And can’t what I can’t. Gonna step back from all this for a moment.” Most think Ayer meant social media when he said “step back,” but he is still updating his account.

Others in his field have abandoned X (or feigned doing so) in favor of alternatives such as Bluesky because of similar opinionated opposition. In the case of director Rob Reiner, the grass wasn’t so greener elsewhere and he quit social media altogether.

Back on Ayer’s X page, there are nasty comments with expletives in both of his threads, but for the most part, people who feel let down by his initial remarks respond with more self-control. Moreover, a considerable number of replies agree with and support him.

The Beekeeper director still hopes their support will bring the release of his vision to fruition, though he acknowledges he’s not in control of that. “I hope my real film can be shared one day. I appreciate the continued support and interest,” he posted earlier in December.

When questioned about its quality, Ayer responded, “The best version simply has not been seen. I know how difficult it is for someone outside the industry to comprehend how insanely different [two] cuts [of] a film can be. If you dislike what you’ve seen, here’s an opportunity to see what I actually intended and then judge once you have all the information.”

    More About:

Recently, ‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer found himself in the crosshairs of criticism for his vocal support of fellow filmmaker James Gunn and the upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot. Gunn, who is set to helm the highly anticipated ‘The Suicide Squad’ sequel, has faced backlash in the past for controversial tweets. However, Ayer has stood by Gunn, praising his talent and defending his right to redemption.

In a series of tweets, Ayer pushed back against critics who questioned his loyalty to Gunn and criticized his decision to support the filmmaker. Ayer emphasized the importance of forgiveness and second chances, pointing out that everyone makes mistakes and deserves the opportunity to grow and learn from them.

Additionally, Ayer addressed the backlash surrounding the announcement of a new ‘Superman’ movie, which is rumored to be a reboot rather than a continuation of Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the iconic superhero. Ayer expressed his excitement for the project and defended the creative team behind it, emphasizing the need for fresh perspectives and new interpretations of beloved characters.

In the face of criticism, David Ayer has remained steadfast in his support of James Gunn and his enthusiasm for the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie. His unwavering dedication to his fellow filmmakers and his commitment to pushing boundaries in the superhero genre serve as a testament to his passion for storytelling and his belief in the power of redemption.

Georgia judge dies by suicide at courthouse: officials

Authorities: State court judge dies by suicide at Effingham County Courthouse

A state court judge is dead after authorities say he took his own life at the Effingham County Courthouse.

Um, do you have any opening statements or do you want to just go straight into? I hadn’t really prepared anything. Um, at approximately 10, 10:30 this morning. We received *** call that there was *** possible suicide at the courthouse. We came over. The court folks And already found Judge Yeo. It appears to be *** self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, it’s *** pending investigation. We’re going for an autopsy and we’ll know more as the, the interview I’m at the uh investigation goes on forward. Um, you said that he was found around between 10 and 11 this morning. Is there any idea of when he may have actually, uh, committed suicide? It looks like it was last night and we’re going on the pretext that, uh, suicide, but you know, you had to do everything to, to see that it is so. Was there any note or anything left behind? Did you guys find anything? Have you been to the residence yet? Uh, we understand there was note sent to the governor. I’m not sure yet what that is, but we’ll, we’ll look at that. No note as Right now. There is *** copy of that note circulating on social media. We haven’t been able to confirm its authenticity yet, so just clarify that. But it appeared that Judge Yekel had tried to resign from his position and that the governor’s office may have rejected that resignation. Are y’all able to confirm whether any of that is accurate? Yes, it is accurate. That happened. Uh, one day last week, I think it’s when all that came out, uh, the resignation was supposed to been final yesterday, but the governor didn’t accept it. I don’t remember the date that that came out, but it was one day last week. Also on social media there was *** former assistant of the previous judge that worked here who said that there was *** lawsuit against the um Judge Yeko. Was there any belief that this had any involvement and with that, is there any result of what that investigation might have been through? I hadn’t heard of any anything on that, um, no lawsuit that I’m aware of, but you know they do those through private attorneys, so we don’t know about it until papers are served. Can you talk about Yokel’s um previous? Does he have any, you know, any charges against him or any kind of criminal activity? No, nothing that, nothing that we’re aware of. Um, I talked to. Linda Smith at UBI this morning and she didn’t say anything about it but we text back and forth with her. What are the other agencies involved in this investigation? Right now just the sheriff’s office. Will GBI be involved through the investigation? No, not at this point. Uh, GBI will do the autopsy. Of course we have to do that through them, but they, they’ll be involved in as far as the autopsy goes. Is there any word on who discovered his body? It was one of my deputies. I don’t know right now which one, but it was one of our, our deputies, so. And that was in *** courtroom, or, um. Was court is supposed to be in session today? No, he didn’t have any court this week. Did he have anything yesterday? Uh, I don’t remember. I was in and out yesterday, but I don’t remember of anything. Usually this time of year, everything’s winding down, so you don’t have too much, but he could have, but I’m just not sure. Um, Sheriff, I know that, you know, y’all in the legal community obviously work very closely together. Um, do you have any comments just for the community or the judge’s family at this time? Yes, and, you know, we want to offer them our condolences, uh, you know, this is never good for anybody. The family’s distraught. I mean it’s supposed to be *** happy time this time of year, and now they’ve got this. I think he’s got some sons that are law enforcement too, so they know what it’s like, but I can’t imagine if they have anything that they need from us we’ll be available and and make stuff available to them going forward. Are you asking for any help from the community on possibly uncovering *** reason for this, any me or premeditated reason for what happened? Of course if anybody knows of anything we would appreciate *** phone call um there’s not much that we know in the community that that would be unless he spoke to somebody uh individually but uh we have talked with his secretary and she’s been with us the entire time through the investigation. Has she hinted on anything? Apparently she didn’t know anything either so it was all *** surprise to her as well. for me. Thank you. Thank y’all. Thank you.

Effingham Co. Courthouse closed after State Court Judge dies by suicide

EFFINGHAM COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) – Three sources from the legal community, including courthouse staff, confirm State Court Judge Steve Yekel has died by suicide at the courthouse.

According to Effingham County Sheriff Jimmy McDuffie, Yekel passed away Monday night and was found between 10 and 10:30 Tuesday morning by a deputy. McDuffie says Yekel appears to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, though an autopsy will be performed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation to confirm. The Sheriff’s Office will be in charge of the investigation.

Yekel had over four decades of experience and served two years as the state court judge. He recently lost re-election and Tuesday would have been his last day, though he was not scheduled in court.

McDuffie said this type of loss is unimaginable.

“This is never good for anybody. The family is distraught. It’s supposed to be a happy time, this time of year. And now, they’ve got this. I can’t imagine. If they have anything they need from us, we’ll be available and we’ll make ourselves available to them,” said McDuffie.

WTOC has obtained a letter from Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s office in which Yekel wrote to the Governor, attempting to resign from his position. In the letter, Yekel said he would be resigning effective on December 30.

A letter Governor Kemp wrote in response shows that he did not accept Yekel’s resignation “out of respect for the will of the people of Effingham County.”

WTOC reached out to Governor Kemp’s Office and was given the following statement:

When asked if Yekel left a suicide note- Sheriff McDuffie referenced Yekel’s letter.

“We understand that there was a note sent to the governor. We’re not sure yet what that is, but there’s no note as of right now,” said Sheriff McDuffie.

The Effingham County Clerk of Court confirms Chief Judge F. Gates Peed has issued an order closing the courthouse. The courthouse will resume normal business on January 2.

All county buildings closed Tuesday at noon.

In a press release the Effingham County Board of Commissioners shared that there will be a crisis response team at the Effingham County Administrative Complex beginning at 3 p.m. Monday for counseling purposes.

The crisis response team will also be accessible on New Years Day and January 2nd.

  • David Ayer Responds to Backlash Against His Support of James Gunn’s Superman Amid Suicide Squad ‘Ayer Cut’ Campaign

David Ayer Responds to Backlash Against His Support of James Gunn’s Superman Amid Suicide Squad ‘Ayer Cut’ Campaign

Suicide Squad 2016 director David Ayer has responded to an online backlash against his support for James Gunn’s Superman and its recently released debut trailer.

Ayer, whose widely panned Suicide Squad movie formed a part of the now defunct DCEU, had initially taken to X/Twitter to ask fans not to launch the latest ‘Ayer Cut’ campaign at the same time as Thursday’s Superman trailer release date.

“I didn’t realize James was dropping Creature Commandos when the last Ayer cut campaign hit,” Ayer tweeted. “The new Superman trailer is dropping soon and I know there’s intentions of another campaign for my version of Skwad.

“As a film makers [sic] I want to support other film makers. I’m excited to see the trailer and have heard through the rumor mill it’s pretty incredible.

“I just want to publicly say it would be nice to stay far clear of Thursday for any campaigning.

“I appreciate everyone hearing me out. At the end of the day I’m riding a tiger here. Just going in heard [sic] on this. ”

Some of the reaction to this tweet, particularly from supporters of the Ayer Cut campaign, went overboard, rekindling memories of the infamous Zack Snyder fandom that played a part in the 2021 release of the Snyder Cut of Justice League. Ayer, clearly exacerbated by what he’d witnessed on social media last week, announced he was taking a “step back” from the discourse.

“My Lord,” he tweeted. “If supporting another film maker is so contentious, I’m just lost at this point.

“When I was a kid I had a nightmare childhood. My best friends were comic books. They held me and gave me company when no one else did.

“Batman spoke to my injured soul. Superman’s optimism was an example how to see the world without darkness.

“I cannot f***ing wait to see Jame’s [sic] trailer. Real talk. And I cannot wait to see his film. And absolutely am sure he crushed it. Because that simple optimism of Superman is all over it. And the little kid in me needs that right now.

“I’m a bad guy for that? So be it.

“I do troll what I can control. And can’t what I can’t. Gonna step back from all this for a moment.”

While the ‘release the Snyder Cut’ online campaign did end up contributing to Warner Bros.’ decision to make it a reality, Ayer said in January that he had officially given up on his campaign to have his director’s cut of Suicide Squad similarly released.

Cries for the Ayer Cut began after the extended Snyder Cut of Justice League was released in 2021. This version was generally considered to be an improvement upon the much-maligned original, and Ayer had long maintained that “his version” of Suicide Squad would have the same result. He’d also remained positive about the eventual Ayer Cut release, even with James Gunn and Peter Safran ditching the DCEU for a fresh start.

Recently, director David Ayer has found himself in the midst of controversy over his public support of James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, amid the ongoing campaign for the release of his own cut of “Suicide Squad.”

After Gunn’s involvement in the DC Extended Universe was announced, Ayer took to social media to express his excitement for the project, praising Gunn’s talent and expressing his belief that the filmmaker would do justice to the iconic character of Superman.

However, Ayer’s comments were met with backlash from fans who have been pushing for the release of the “Ayer Cut” of “Suicide Squad,” a version of the film that reportedly differs significantly from the theatrical release.

In response to the criticism, Ayer took to Twitter to address the situation, stating that he fully supports Gunn and his vision for Superman, while also acknowledging the disappointment felt by fans who are still hoping to see his original vision for “Suicide Squad” come to light.

Ayer’s comments have sparked a debate among fans, with some applauding his humility and support for Gunn, while others continue to express their frustration over the lack of acknowledgment for the “Ayer Cut.”

As the discussion continues to unfold, it remains to be seen whether Ayer’s statements will help to quell the backlash or if the campaign for the release of the “Ayer Cut” will only grow stronger in response.

  • ‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer Defends James Gunn’s ‘Superman’

‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer Defends James Gunn’s ‘Superman’

David Ayer has responded to public criticism for his support of James Gunn‘s upcoming film “Superman” and his cinematic expansion of the collective DC Universe.

A few days prior to the release of the “Superman” trailer, Ayer addressed the ongoing campaign among his fans to promote and release his cut of the 2016 feature “Suicide Squad.” He asked fans to halt this initiative, writing on X, “I didn’t realize James was dropping ‘Creature Commandos’ when the last Ayer cut campaign hit…the new ‘Superman’ trailer is dropping soon and I know there’s intentions of another campaign for my version of Skwad.”

Ayer later added: “As a film maker I want to support other film makers. I’m excited to see the trailer and have heard through the rumor mill it’s pretty incredible.” He went on to urge fans not to attempt to overshadow the release of Gunn’s upcoming Man of Steel project.

On Dec. 18, Ayer took to X once more to express his reaction to recent backlash regarding his support of Gunn and his revamped DC Studios.

“My Lord. If supporting another film maker is so contentious, I’m just lost at this point,” he wrote on the social media platform. “When I was a kid I had a nightmare childhood. My best friends were comic books. They held me and gave me company when no one else did.”

The director went on to share how Batman spoke to his soul while the optimism of Superman made a lasting impact on him. He held his convictions regarding the situation, writing “I cannot fucking wait to see James’ trailer. Real talk. And I cannot wait to see his film. And absolutely am sure he crushed it. Because that simple optimism of Superman is all over it. And the little kid in me needs that right now.”

Ayer then questioned if he was in the wrong for his controversial perspective on the matter. He concluded that he would be taking a step back, although he did not specify if this was in relation to social media or the entertainment industry as a whole.

Last year, Ayer discussed with Gunn the possibility of releasing a new cut of “Suicide Squad.

“All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release,” Ayer wrote on X in August of this past year. “The interest in my cut being [shown] seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have its time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch his DC Universe without more drama about old projects. In a way I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

Ayer also emphasized that his version of the feature would eventually be released. In an interview with “Total Film” in December of 2023, the filmmaker said “It’s coming. Something’s going to happen. Something’s going to be revealed. The truth always comes out. It always comes out.”

Director David Ayer recently came to the defense of fellow filmmaker James Gunn, who has been receiving backlash for his upcoming project, a new take on the iconic superhero Superman.

In a recent interview, Ayer praised Gunn’s vision for the character and expressed his support for the project. He stated, “James is a brilliant filmmaker and I have no doubt that he will bring something fresh and exciting to the Superman franchise. I believe in his ability to deliver a compelling and innovative take on the character.”

Ayer also addressed the criticism that Gunn has faced from some fans who are skeptical of his approach to Superman. He argued, “Film is an art form, and each director brings their own unique perspective to a project. It’s important to give creators the freedom to explore new ideas and interpretations, and I have full confidence in James’ ability to do justice to the character.”

Fans of both Ayer and Gunn have been eagerly anticipating the release of their respective projects, and it’s clear that the two directors share a mutual respect and admiration for each other’s work. With Ayer’s endorsement, it seems likely that Gunn’s Superman film will be met with a more positive reception from audiences.
