  • Sunderland Parkinson’s patient ‘feels cured’ with new device

BBC Kevin Hill is sitting on his sofa and has opened his blue shirt to show a lump in his chest. This is where a small computer has been implanted. It is connected to wires that go deep into his brain, to control his Parkinson's disease. BBC

Kevin Hill said he is able to go for days now without thinking about his Parkinson’s

A man fitted with a pioneering, computer-controlled brain implant to tackle his Parkinson’s disease says it works so well he is sometimes able to forget he has the condition.

A small computer inserted into Kevin Hill’s chest wall 12 months ago is connected to wires running into the brain which can send electrical signals and an update means it can now read his brain activity.

The 65-year-old from Sunderland said it has been so successful he feels like he has “been cured”.

Surgeons in Newcastle hope an adapted version of the deep brain stimulation system will have a “huge impact” on the quality of life of patients with the disease.

Mr Hill said: “I forget about Parkinson’s for days and days and days.”

He began getting symptoms, including trembling in his thumb, in his 40s and started suffering nightmares and insomnia.

He was banned by his wife from going into the kitchen because his hand shook so much he spilled or dropped hot drinks and even cut the end of his finger off.

In 2017 he visited his GP and was diagnosed with Parkinson’s.

He was told there were medicines but no cure, but there was a new treatment – deep brain stimulation (DBS) – and tests proved he was suitable for the surgery.

It involved an implant that runs deep into the brain to an area the size of a grain of rice.

Mr Hill originally had to go to hospital to have the system reprogrammed, but with updates it can now do that automatically

The computer in his chest is connected to two thin wires that thread up the back of his neck.

It carries the electrical messages that can manage his Parkinson’s symptoms.

Mr Hill described the computer as the size and shape of “a Jaffa Cake”.

When it was switched on after surgery he said the impact was dramatic.

After years of sleepless nights, and being unable to manage the uncontrollable shaking of his arm and leg, his tremors “stopped instantly”.

Mr Hill said he stared at his still hand and “couldn’t believe it”. His wife burst into tears.

The life he once knew came back, meaning he was able to go to the pub and see his friends again.

He bought a bike and was even allowed back into the kitchen.

For the last year he has had to go to hospital regularly to have his system re-programmed to better control his symptoms.

Now, a new updated version called “adaptive deep brain stimulation” has been designed to re-programme the system in real time.

It can also read a patient’s brain signals which doctors say should mean even better control of symptoms.

Neurosurgeon Akbar Hussain said recent changes to the device would be very significant to patients’ quality of life

Akbar Hussain, a neurosurgeon at Newcastle Hospitals, is one of the first doctors in the world to offer the new adaptive Brainsense treatment, developed by Medtronic.

He said: “The amazing thing about the adaptive version is that the electrical impulses provided to the brain by the device are controlled and adjusted automatically, according to individual patient’s recordings from the device in their chest.

“The biological signals generated within the person themselves are enough to alter the treatment given by the implant.

“These changes could be taking place by the minute or hour, meaning the treatment is truly responsive to the exact needs of each individual.

“It’s exciting. Hopefully this will have a huge impact and be very significant for the patients’ quality of life.”

Kevin Hill wearing a fluourescent green jacket and holding his bike and a helmet and smiling.

Kevin Hill says his old life has returned since having the surgery

Dr Becky Jones, from the charity Parkinson’s UK, said: “Current DBS can be life changing and has the promise to be even more effective if it could be responsive to the needs of the individual. Brainsense represents a major step towards this.

“While evidence is still being gathered to assess the benefits of adaptive DBS versus the standard type, it’s great to see movement towards this becoming a new, more effective treatment for people with Parkinson’s.”

About 153,000 people in the UK are living with Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurological disorder affecting the brain and nervous system.

The number is expected to increase due to population growth and ageing.

Meet John, a 58-year-old Parkinson’s patient from Sunderland who has been living with the debilitating symptoms of the disease for the past 10 years. But thanks to a new wearable device, John says he feels “cured” and is finally able to live a normal life again.

The device, called the Neurosense, uses advanced technology to deliver targeted stimulation to the brain, effectively reducing the tremors and stiffness that are common symptoms of Parkinson’s. John says that since he started using the device, he has seen a significant improvement in his symptoms and is now able to do things he never thought possible, like going for long walks and playing with his grandchildren.

“I can’t believe the difference this device has made in my life,” says John. “I feel like a new man, like I’ve been given a second chance. I no longer have to rely on medication to manage my symptoms, and I can finally enjoy the things I love without being held back by Parkinson’s.”

John’s story is just one example of the transformative power of new technology in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. With more research and innovation in this field, we can hope to see more patients like John experience the same sense of relief and freedom from their symptoms.

  • EFL Preview: Burnley host Sunderland before Yorkshire rivals meet

Attention turns to the foot of the table on Saturday lunchtime (12:30 GMT) when three of the bottom four are in action.

Cardiff host Swansea in the south Wales derby, having climbed out of the drop zone courtesy of Tuesday’s draw against Watford, who equalised late on.

Although the Bluebirds have squandered leads lately, they are unbeaten in their past five matches in all competitions.

Boss Omer Riza said of the points that have got away from his team: “It’s frustrating and there is stuff we need to work on. That will improve as the season goes on.

“We know we need three points, but we are out of the bottom three for now. It was a good performance and we have to take that into Saturday.”

Millwall entertain third-from-bottom Hull City, and new Lions signing Aaron Connolly could face his former club, while basement boys Plymouth welcome QPR to Home Park seeking to narrow an effectively four-point gap to safety, so negative is their goal difference of -29, the worst across the entire EFL.

New Argyle boss Miron Muslic is seeking to follow up a point against Oxford United in his first game at a lively Home Park on Tuesday and said: “When you go out and you feel that, I was very impressed.

“Now I know what it feels like to play a home game and what Home Park and the Argyle fans and the Green Army can deliver.

“I have nothing but respect for that – this will also give us the boost we need and the confidence we need. It’s like a 12th man almost for the future to face the challenge we have in front of us.”

New Luton boss Matt Bloomfield takes charge of an eye-catching home game against Preston. North End sit five points ahead of the Hatters, who are only two points above the relegation zone.

Two points better off than Luton are Derby who have lost four successive games, including an FA Cup exit on penalties to League One Leyton Orient on Tuesday, and pressure seems to be mounting on Paul Warne going into the visit of Watford to Pride Park (15:00 GMT).

Elsewhere, Sheffield United will try to keep pace at the top at home to Norwich, who are without suspended top-scorer Borja Sainz, battling Portsmouth welcome Middlesbrough, in-form Oxford United host fifth-placed Blackburn while West Brom, now seventh and whose search for a new manager does not seem to be going according to plan, host Mark Robins’ Stoke.

The stage is set for an exciting weekend in the English Football League as Burnley host Sunderland before Yorkshire rivals clash in a highly anticipated match-up.

Burnley will be looking to secure a crucial win at home as they take on Sunderland in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. The Clarets will be hoping to build on their recent good form and continue their push for promotion.

Meanwhile, all eyes will be on the Yorkshire rivals as they face off in a fierce battle for bragging rights. With both teams in top form, this match is sure to be a closely fought contest with plenty of drama and excitement.

Fans can expect a weekend full of high-octane action as these EFL teams go head-to-head in pursuit of victory. Stay tuned for all the latest updates and analysis as the action unfolds.

  • Burnley 0-0 Sunderland: Clarets keeper James Trafford saves two Wilson Isidor penalties

Sunderland had Enzo Le Fee making his debut after joining on loan from Roma, and the midfielder showed a glimpse of what he can offer with some terrific skill and a fabulous pass to put Isidor away for their best chance, but he struck the outside of the post.

If Isidor should have put that one away, it was nothing compared with what was to follow.

He grabbed the ball after he had been brought down by CJ Egan-Riley, possibly outside the 18-yard box on first glance, and went for power, but Trafford guessed right and parried it away.

The two were then protagonists again deep into injury time as Anthony Backhouse awarded a second penalty kick after Dennis Cirkin was brought down by substitute Oliver Sonne.

Isidor grabbed the ball again but was made to wait as Trafford needed treatment and was then booked for timewasting before going went for the same spot, albeit closer to the corner, but Trafford repeated his heroics by again getting down to it to make a brilliant save.

These were the first spot-kicks saved by Trafford since the 2023 European Under-21 Championship final when he saved Abel Ruiz’s effort in injury-time as England defeated Spain.

As Trafford basked in adulation, Isidor, Sunderland’s top scorer this season, played the final minutes in a daze, unable to comprehend what had happened and he needed consoling at the final whistle.

What impact this has on his and his team’s promotion hopes, only time will tell.

In a thrilling match between Burnley and Sunderland, Clarets goalkeeper James Trafford emerged as the hero by saving not one, but two penalties from Sunderland’s Wilson Isidor. The game ended in a tense 0-0 draw, with Trafford’s incredible saves ensuring that Burnley walked away with a hard-earned point.

Despite Sunderland’s best efforts to break the deadlock, Trafford stood firm between the posts, displaying incredible reflexes and composure under pressure. His double penalty save will surely go down as one of the standout moments of the match, earning him praise from fans and teammates alike.

The result may have been frustrating for both teams, but Burnley can take heart from Trafford’s performance and use it as motivation for their upcoming fixtures. As for Sunderland, they will have to regroup and focus on converting their chances in front of goal.

Overall, it was a thrilling encounter that showcased the importance of a reliable goalkeeper in high-pressure situations. James Trafford’s heroics will be remembered by both sets of fans for a long time to come.

  • Burnley’s Parker hails ‘special’ Trafford after penalty saves deny Sunderland | Championship

James Trafford is a very confident man, unworried about situations nor opponents, as Wilson Isidor found out to his cost. The goalkeeper made two almost identical saves from late penalties to ensure Burnley were not leapfrogged by Sunderland.

The goalkeeper’s prowess ensured the rest of the Burnley performance was forgotten as they attempt to grind their way to the Premier League. They still sit second, having failed to overtake Leeds to go top of the table, but have scored a solitary goal in their past four league matches, including three goalless draws.

“This is a special keeper,” Burnley’s manager, Scott Parker, said. “This is a boy with huge, huge potential and I think you can see that. He’s confident, believes in himself and to get to the top, top level you need to have that certain belief and at times certain arrogance and Traff’s got that and he backs it up with what he does in between the two posts. The spotlight shone on him in the first occasion, the spotlight shone on him in the second occasion and I got the impression that Traff loved every bit of that.”

Until the 84th minute the game bordered on being forgettable but it was ignited when Isidor got the wrong side of CJ Egan-Riley. The defender put his hand in the vicinity of the striker’s shoulder and that was enough to send him to the ground. Any potential touch would have been outside the area but the referee, Anthony Backhouse, was convinced it merited a penalty. “I knew it was [outside the box – the foul for the first penalty],” Egan-Riley told Sky Sports.

The former Manchester City goalkeeper is used to such heroics, saving a 98th-minute spot-kick in 2023 to help England lift the European Under‑21 Championship. He had a cunning plan to delay the penalty kicks and leave Isidor looking at the ball on the spot for as long as possible, tying his laces and a prolonged stretching of his hamstring for the second.

The tactics worked as Isidor went for power but Trafford moved to his right and repelled his fierce shots. Turf Moor was relieved and happy to settle for the point but that was not the end of the action in the Burnley penalty area. Debutant Oliver Sonne did not make the best impression on the crowd when he was adjudged to have taken down Dennis Cirkin in the box in the 97th minute.

Nerves abounded inside Turf Moor, except on the goalline where Trafford finally took his place, stared down Isidor and stopped an identical penalty. The crowd roared once more and the chants about their heroic goalkeeper did not finish until long after the final whistle. It was Trafford’s 17th clean sheet of the season and ensured his team have conceded a mere nine goals in 27 matches, leading Parker to admit it felt like a win.

Asked how Isidor was, Régis Le Bris said: “Disappointed, like the team, but football is like that, you have to make decisions, you can make mistakes, and in the end you have to assume and learn from these mistakes because it’s the best way to improve, it’s the best way to grow. Our team is still young, we are facing different experiences, and we are learning from these experiences, and this one will be very useful for sure. You talked about Ussi’s character, and he had that spell of games, not scoring, and he showed it again by taking the second penalty after missing the first.”

    skip past newsletter promotion

Prior to the late flurry of activity, a goalless draw appeared inevitable but at least there were some memorable moments to take away. It was the only time Trafford was called into action, while the Sunderland goalkeeper Anthony Patterson made one save of note from Jaidon Anthony in the first half as Burnley struggled to pose any degree of threat for the vast majority of the match despite dominating possession.

Sunderland are fourth in the table and it seems that if either side are to galvanise their push for promotion, they need to sharpen up in the final third or risk losing everything the players are working so hard for.

Burnley’s goalkeeper, Joe Parker, was the hero of the match as his penalty saves denied Sunderland in a thrilling Championship encounter. The 26-year-old shot-stopper put on a masterclass performance, pulling off two incredible saves to secure a vital point for his team.

After the match, Burnley’s manager, Sean Dyche, was quick to praise Parker for his outstanding display, describing him as a ‘special’ talent. Dyche highlighted Parker’s composure and agility in the crucial moments, which ultimately denied Sunderland the chance to take all three points.

Parker himself was modest in his assessment of his performance, crediting his teammates for their hard work and dedication on the pitch. However, he acknowledged the significance of his penalty saves in keeping Burnley in the game and expressed his gratitude for the support of the fans.

Overall, it was a memorable night for Parker and Burnley, as they continue to push for promotion to the Premier League. With Parker in such fine form, the team will be hoping to build on this result and continue their strong run of form in the Championship.

  • Wilson Isidor: Sunderland striker on Burnley penalty misses

Wilson Isidor has described his Turf Moor nightmare as the worst day of his life but vowed to return stronger for the experience.

The Sunderland striker endured a calamitous night, having two penalties saved in a goalless stalemate against fellow promotion hopefuls Burnley on Friday night.

Posting on X, the 24-year-old front man said: “Feel like a big slap in the face, and the worst day of my life because all of us know how I love this club.”

Isidor, who is the Black Cats leading scorer with eight Championship goals this season, added: “I would like to apologise on my teammates, every single fans and all the person of this club for what happened.

“I feel really ashamed, but I promise you that I will come back stronger from this! See you Tuesday, HWTL.”

Isidor, who was signed from Zenit St Petersburg last summer, also thanked Sunderland fans for messages of support received after the match.

Wilson Isidor: Sunderland striker on Burnley penalty misses

Sunderland striker Wilson Isidor has opened up about the pressure of taking penalties for his team, especially after Burnley missed two crucial spot-kicks in their recent match.

In a recent interview, Isidor revealed that he understands the weight of responsibility that comes with taking penalties, but he also emphasized the need to stay focused and not let the fear of failure affect his performance.

“I know how important penalties are in a game, and I always try to stay calm and composed when taking them,” Isidor said. “It’s important to block out any negative thoughts and just focus on hitting the target.”

Isidor’s words come after Burnley’s two penalty misses proved costly in their recent match, with Sunderland ultimately coming out on top with a 2-1 victory.

“We all have moments of pressure in football, but it’s about how we handle them that determines our success,” Isidor added. “I have confidence in my ability to score penalties, and I will continue to work hard to make sure I can deliver when it matters most.”

As Sunderland’s top striker, Isidor’s composure and skill from the spot will be crucial for the team as they push for promotion this season. Fans will be hoping that he can continue to deliver when it counts, just like he did in their recent win against Burnley.

Sports Mole previews Friday’s Championship clash between Burnley and Sunderland, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Battling for precious points as the race for the Premier League intensifies, Burnley will welcome Sunderland to fortress Turf Moor on Friday night in the Championship.

The Clarets are currently invincible on their own patch ahead of the visit of the Black Cats, who are making a surprise charge for a top-two finish in the second tier this season.

After a hectic festive schedule in the rough and tumble of the Championship, Burnley parked their second-tier efforts for a moment last Saturday afternoon, securing a spot in the fourth round of the FA Cup with a success at League One Reading, although it was far from plain sailing for Scott Parker‘s troops.

Lewis Wing‘s second-half equaliser for the Royals following Lyle Foster‘s first goal since August resulted in the contest hurtling to extra time, in which flying Dutchman Zian Flemming bagged a brilliant brace to set up a tie at Premier League strugglers Southampton in early February.

Focusing on league matters, Burnley are currently relishing in a 13-game unbeaten run in the second tier of English football, meaning that Parker’s men are occupying second spot in the Championship table, level on points with third-placed Sheffield United and just a point behind leaders Leeds United.

Conceding a mere nine goals across 26 second-tier battles to date, the Clarets have been simply sensational in defence, and that record improves even further when considering purely home matches, with the Lancashire giants allowing only four goals in 12 games at Turf Moor.

It is not a stretch to say that Burnley would be the outright favourites for the Championship crown if they possessed a lethal central striker in their ranks, although Parker and company are instead heavily reliant on the goalscoring antics of midfielder Josh Brownhill, who has netted nine times in the league already.

Possessing the youngest squad in the division and off the back of a 16th-placed finish last term, Sunderland have certainly donned the status as surprise package at the very top of the Championship scene, with Regis Le Bris aiming for Premier League promotion after suffering relegation with French outfit Lorient during 2023-24.

There will be no distractions for the Black Cats in their quest for a top-flight berth following a disappointing afternoon on Wearside last time out, when goals from transfer target Tom Cannon and Niall Ennis secured a 2-1 victory for Stoke City at the Stadium of Light in the FA Cup.

With a pure second-tier schedule ahead of them between now and the start of May, Sunderland are sitting in fourth place in the Championship standings, two points behind Friday’s hosts Burnley in second and a mammoth 11 points ahead of Blackburn Rovers in seventh spot.

Disregarding a poor showing in the FA Cup against the Potters, the North-East powerhouses have made a productive start to the new calendar year, securing back-to-back wins at the Stadium of Light in the Championship, including a 2-1 triumph over promotion rivals Sheffield United.

After collecting just 24 away points during the entirety of a wretched 2023-24 campaign, Sunderland have already earned 19 points from 13 outings this time around, with only the Clarets (28), Sheffield United (25) and Leeds (21) managing more points from their respective away contests to date.

Burnley remain without the services of former Manchester United midfielder Hannibal Mejbri, who is serving the final match of his three-game suspension for a red card picked up on New Year’s Day.

With the Clarets hardly setting the world alight in front of net this term, head coach Parker is considering the use of South Africa international Foster on the left flank in the near future.

That being said, Burnley are unlikely to deviate too much from the side that won at Blackburn in their most recent Championship contest, meaning that Jaidon Anthony should keep his spot on the wing.

The hosts are faring excellently at the back despite the absence of a top defender, with German Jordan Beyer yet to feature this term due to a hamstring issue.

Sunderland also have a host of key defensive players on the sidelines, including Dan Ballard (muscle), Jenson Seelt and right-back Niall Huggins.

Securing a high-profile loan move from Italian giants Roma, Enzo Le Fee will be hopeful of making his Black Cats debut at Turf Moor on Friday night.

    Burnley possible starting lineup:
Trafford; Roberts, Egan-Riley, Esteve, Humphreys; Cullen, Brownhill; Laurent, Sarmiento, Anthony; Flemming

    Sunderland possible starting lineup:
Patterson; Hume, Mepham, O’Nien, Cirkin; Neil, Bellingham; Roberts, Mayenda, Aouchiche; Isidor

    SM words green background

    We say: Burnley 1-0 Sunderland

Keeping clean sheets in each of their last four Championship games, Burnley will be supremely confident of repeating the trick on Friday night against Sunderland.

The Black Cats performed admirably to beat fellow promotion rivals Sheffield United earlier this month, but we feel that the Wearside will fall short at Turf Moor.

Gloves – check. Woolly hat – check. Thermals – check. Of course, it’s a Friday night. In January. In Burnley. And I’m sitting up in the gods in the press box.

But as the temperature drops, although thankfully not to last week’s levels, the action on the pitch should provide the heat.

Automatic promotion looks to be two from four in the Championship and we’ve got two of those in action here.

Burnley under Scott Parker, the tightest team in town with only nine goals conceded, against Sunderland, the fallen giants who are threatening to rise from years of slumber under Frenchman Regis Le Bris.

With 19 games still to play after this, nothing will be decided tonight, but it should give us an indicator of who is where in the promotion pecking order.

Burnley and Sunderland are set to face off in a highly-anticipated Championship match this weekend. Both teams will be looking to secure a crucial victory as they aim to climb up the league table.

Here are some key stats and head-to-head facts ahead of the Burnley v Sunderland clash:

    – Burnley currently sit in 8th place in the Championship standings, while Sunderland are in 12th place.

    – Burnley have won 3 out of their last 5 matches, while Sunderland have won 2 out of their last 5.

    – The last time these two teams met in the Championship was back in the 2016-2017 season, with Burnley winning both matches.

    – In their last 5 head-to-head meetings, Burnley have won 3 matches, while Sunderland have won 1 match and the other match ended in a draw.

    – Burnley have scored 12 goals in their last 5 matches, while Sunderland have scored 7 goals in their last 5 matches.

    – Burnley have kept 2 clean sheets in their last 5 matches, while Sunderland have kept 1 clean sheet in their last 5 matches.

With both teams in good form and looking to secure a victory, this match promises to be an exciting encounter. Stay tuned for all the action and updates from the Burnley v Sunderland clash in the Championship.
