  • Sources – Suns’ Kevin Durant has no interest in Warriors reunion

Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant has no desire for a reunion with the Golden State Warriors, league sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

The Warriors have been seriously pursuing a trade before Thursday’s deadline with Durant as one of their targets. Golden State is eager to find another star to play alongside franchise star Stephen Curry.

Due to Phoenix’s 25-24 record and ninth-place standing in the West entering Wednesday, teams have been aggressively calling the Suns and have inquired about Durant.

However, sources told Charania that Durant does not want to go back to Golden State, after he helped the Warriors win back-to-back titles in two of his three seasons there.

Durant won Finals MVP in both the 2017 and 2018 NBA Finals.

The Suns hope to continue to build around Durant and Devin Booker, but it is unclear where trade talks go between now and the deadline.

According to sources close to the situation, Suns’ star Kevin Durant has no interest in reuniting with the Golden State Warriors. Despite speculation that Durant could potentially return to the team where he won two NBA championships, it appears that he is focused on leading the Suns to success.

Durant, who signed with the Suns in the offseason, has been a key player for the team and has quickly become a fan favorite in Phoenix. While the Warriors have expressed interest in bringing Durant back, sources say that he is committed to his current team and is not interested in returning to Golden State.

Fans of the Suns can rest assured that Durant is fully focused on helping his team compete for a championship and is not looking to make a return to his former team. Stay tuned for more updates on Durant and the Suns as the season progresses.

  • Devin Booker, about to make Suns history, has found a home (and voice) in Arizona

PHOENIX — Andy Page was ready. The 44-year-old Phoenix Suns fan had set a reminder in his cell phone. “Jan. 24. 8 a.m.”

The Nike Book 1 “Forrest Gump” sneakers were about to drop. Page had been a Suns fan for as long as he could remember. He grew up watching Tom Chambers, Eddie Johnson and Jeff Hornacek. He celebrated the postseason runs of Charles Barkley and Steve Nash.

In 2015, the Suns drafted Devin Booker, a guard from the University of Kentucky. It didn’t take long for Page to appreciate everything about Booker. He remembers thinking: “This is what I want as a Suns fan. He’s a homegrown guy. He’s all about us. He’s a good player. He fits everything you would want.”

While working as an administration assistant at Phoenix Sunnyslope High, Page called up the Nike website. At 8 a.m., he ordered the Gump shoes, size 11. A message flashed: “Sorry, the product you want is no longer available.”

    Disappointed, Page returned to work.

An hour later, his luck changed. Page noticed Booker had posted on his Instagram story. The Phoenix guard said he was hiding sneakers at certain locations, similar to what he had previously done in Paris during the Summer Olympics and in other places. Finders keepers.

A four-time All-Star, Booker is about to become the Suns’ career scoring leader, 22 points behind the record entering Monday. Over 10 years, he has become the state’s most popular athlete, his No. 1 jersey an unmistakable part of the desert landscape. He has connected to fans in his own unique way, finding his voice in ways few could have imagined.

    Devin Booker

Booker had stolen “Finders Keepers” from DJ Clark Kent, a hip-hop producer and legendary sneakerhead in New York. Kent hid sneakers from his personal collection around the city, posting clues of their whereabouts. Booker had even contacted Kent and asked for location suggestions when he did a similar scavenger hunt in New York.

The Suns star had not participated in a recent giveaway in Sedona, Ariz. — Phoenix had a game that night, he said — but he had time for this one. Pulling up his hoodie to avoid detection, Booker hid shoes at various locations, including one at a bus stop on West Dunlap Avenue.

As he watched Booker’s IG story, Page recognized Sunnyslope High in the background. As Booker panned the area with his phone, giving viewers clues to the location, Page recognized the street. “That’s us!” he said.

Page ran outside. He found the shoes, which featured Booker’s signature and “Finders Keepers” in black ink. As Page walked back to the school, he noticed a man driving slowly, window down, looking for the shoes. When the man noticed Page carrying them, he flashed a thumbs up and yelled, “Go Suns!”

Booker, 28, says he likes to tell his story through his shoes. The Book 1 “Haven” is named after his dog. The Book 1 “Flagstaff” is named after the northern Arizona city in which Booker likes to hang. The Book 1 “Forrest Gump,” low cut with a red swoosh, is named after one of his favorite movies.

“I think it makes him so relatable,” Page said of Booker. “He’s blessed enough to have this cool shoe deal with Nike. He wants to share that with people. Here, have some free shoes. Like he has said, I think it helps him feel connected.”

Before he was hired as coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, JJ Redick hosted a popular podcast, “The Old Man and the Three,” a basketball show that featured NBA stars. In the spring of 2024, Redick had Booker on as a guest. Months later, Redick was asked if he had learned anything about the Suns star.

    Redick smiled.

“I’ll share a quick story,” he said. “We went to his house. Didn’t really have a set time. Just kind of come over, hang out, let’s talk and we’ll record at some point. Never had a guest do this in 400-some episodes. We had our producer setting up. And Devin really took a lot of pride in participating in the setup process. The lighting, what was in the background, the camera angles, what was on the table.

“It resonated with me because I’m a very particular person, and there’s a level of obsession about things. I think sometimes players — and Devin’s one of these guys — that are obsessed with basketball and obsessed with all that goes into being a great basketball player, that obsession carries over to the rest of their life. I know that. And that was cool for me to kind of watch what normally is a 5- to 10-minute process turn into a 45-minute process.”

Asked about this, Booker said Redick had tried to get him on the podcast for a couple of years. The preparation at his house mostly had to do with product placement. Booker didn’t want to promote anything without compensation. But he also said he spent that time trying to decide if he actually wanted to do the podcast.

“I don’t know,” Booker said. “Everyone has a podcast now, and there’s so much information out there. I just did a decent job of kind of staying in my own lane and kind of out of the way. Protect the peace.”

Booker added that he had done “The Backyard Podcast,” hosted by close friend and fellow baller D’Angelo Russell. The feedback was good. He said people seemed to enjoy when he showed personality, but it wasn’t easy for him.

“I feel uncomfortable sometimes,” Booker said. “I don’t like listening to myself back and hearing it again. I’m always like, ‘I should’ve said that differently.’”

Booker has few regrets about his time in Phoenix, but he admits it’s been a roller coaster. He has played on some of the organization’s worst teams (after former Suns star Alvan Adams twice attended the NBA Draft lottery with Booker, he told Booker he didn’t want to be back there again) and some of the best (the 2020-21 team made the NBA Finals and the 2021-22 set a franchise record for wins). He has played for seven head coaches and had more teammates than any other player in franchise history.

    Devin Booker

Those who have worked with Booker describe him in different ways. Former assistant coach Jerry Sichting, who was around Booker for just a few months during his rookie season, said the guard was so confident entering the league it bordered on cockiness. “But at the same time he was open to coaching,” Sichting said. “He listened.”

Former assistant coach Randy Ayers appreciated Booker’s honesty. He didn’t work much with Booker directly but he would approach the guard about game situations. “If he didn’t like something, he would tell you,” Ayers said, “but he was very polished in how he told you.”

Former assistant Kevin Young said upon joining Monty Williams’ staff in 2020 he initially gave Booker space. The Phoenix guard had already gone through five head coaches, which Young figured translated to about 45 assistant coaches. He said it took months to build trust with Booker. But once he did, their relationship flourished.

“We connected on really just kind of the same (basketball level),” Young said. “I don’t know. We just saw it similar. Game plans and schemes, offensively and defensively. We were able to pick each other’s brains on attacking different opponents on both ends of the floor.”

Former Suns star Rex Chapman said Booker’s status within Arizona reminds him of how Reggie Miller was once adored in Indiana. He first saw Booker while Booker was a freshman at Kentucky. A former Kentucky star himself, Chapman watched the Wildcats practice in Rupp Arena. He asked then-assistant coach Kenny Payne how much Booker would play his first college season.

Responded Payne: “I hope not too much because if he does we won’t keep him for more than a year.”

    He was right.

Chapman said Booker plays in a way that seems effortless, but what also stands out to him is just how much Booker has embraced his role as the face of the franchise. He’s thoughtful, curious and kind, Chapman said, the type who fist-pounds kids before and after his pregame shooting session.

Last year the Suns held a family event at their north Phoenix practice facility. Booker got there early, Chapman said. Played with everyone’s kids. While doing so, Booker learned that teammate Saben Lee had a younger brother named Aubry who loved cars. Booker, known for his collection of classic cars, took Aubry outside and showed him his pink 1958 Chevy convertible. The two talked and took photos.

“Obviously, Book is considered a high-level athlete, a celebrity on the highest level,” Lee said from Turkey, where he is playing this season. “To do something like that, which to him might not be that significant, but to my little brother and me, it definitely meant a lot. That’s something my little brother will remember for the rest of his life. It just goes to show you Book’s character, the way that he was raised and the way that he still is.”

Booker may not be fond of podcasts, but he has found his voice in other, more unique ways. The release of the Book 1 “Forrest Gump” sneakers came with ads, placing Booker in scenes from the iconic 1994 movie that starred Tom Hanks. In one, Booker sits on a park bench in Savannah, Ga. In another, he runs on scenic U.S. Route 163 near the Arizona-Utah border.

While the character is a CGI creation, Booker insists he did the voice work, which is amusing and almost difficult to believe. Booker said he rewatched the Forrest Gump scenes a “million times” to try to get everything right. Then in his best southern drawl, he recorded a voice memo, one that required a few takes.

“Mama always said there’s an awful lot you could tell about a person by their shoes. Where they goin’. Where they been.

“I’ve worn lots of shoes. I bet if I think about it real hard I could remember my first pair of shoes. Mama said they’d take me anywhere.”

“Hilarious,” said teammate Royce O’Neale, although he expressed serious doubt when asked if Booker had a future in voice-over work.

“When they told me I was getting a shoe, I was like, ‘What’s a better way to tell stories?’ because I don’t really talk that much,” Booker said. “I’d rather just tell stories through different ways like that. … Any bits of stories I can give to the fans and my people without just telling them or yelling in their face, I like to do it.”

Perhaps as soon as Monday night, when the Suns play the Trail Blazers in Portland, Booker could pass Walter Davis as the organization’s career scoring leader. Across the NBA, nine active players hold such a title, but only two (Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Milwaukee’s Giannis Antetokounmpo) top the career scoring lists for teams on which they still play. It’s a list that reflects not only talent, but loyalty as well.

After a recent game, Booker said he first felt a connection during his rookie season. Once he started playing extensive minutes, he felt the city’s support. Fans stuck with him as the Suns struggled, they cheered for him as he developed into a star. More recently, they’ve rushed to different places in hopes of finding his signature shoes, characters in Booker’s Arizona story.

“It’s something I don’t take lightly,” said Booker, who was born in Michigan and attended high school in Mississippi. “It’s something that I feel like we built from the ground up. This is my home now.”

Devin Booker, about to make Suns history, has found a home (and voice) in Arizona

Devin Booker, the star shooting guard for the Phoenix Suns, is on the brink of making history for the franchise. As he continues to dominate on the court and lead his team to victories, Booker has also found a true home in the heart of Arizona.

Since being drafted by the Suns in 2015, Booker has become a fan favorite and a beloved figure in the Phoenix community. His dedication to the team, his work ethic, and his passion for the game have endeared him to fans and teammates alike.

  • Blazers vs. Suns Round Two Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers are facing off against the Phoenix Suns once again following a 127-108 win on Saturday night. The Blazers are on a hot streak right now as winners of seven of their last eight games and are looking to defend home court once again.

On the other side, the Suns are also playing good basketball recently. Even with a blowout loss to Portland two nights ago, Phoenix are winners of nine of their last 13 contests and find themselves in the thick of the Western Conference playoff hunt.

The Blazers are getting hot right before the NBA Trade Deadline on Thursday, February 6, putting into question what the direction of the team is this season. If Portland stands pat at the deadline, it implies a push for a play-in spot might be what the team is looking at. However, many Blazers have popped up in trade rumors recently, also implying that the team might trade some of their veterans and fade back into the bottom of the standings.

The Suns, however, have no doubts about their position as buyers this deadline. They are firmly in a win-now mode and might be looking to add some extra talent around Devin Booker and Kevin Durant. There is a chance that this is one of the last games these teams play before major lineup changes around the deadline.

    Reader Questions

    From raoulduke:

Does Kevin Durant look old, like really old? He never really seemed like a threat on Saturday. Yes, he can still shoot but had a rough time getting to his spots and staying in control.

Kevin Durant is definitely not the scorer he once was now that he’s 36. However, he still shot a pretty efficient 50% from the floor on Saturday. He wasn’t able to take over the game like we know he can, and he only got to the free throw line three times leading to a 22-point performance. However, he also faced off against Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara all night. The pair are basically the perfect archetype to slow down a player in Durant’s mold. Two long and aggressive defenders that excel at disrupting opposing stars.

Whether Durant has an equally quiet game tonight remains to be seen, but Camara and Avdija will certainly try their best to make that happen.

    From Devyn:

Assuming no trades happen at the deadline, do you see a path where Robert Williams replaces Donovan Clingan as DA’s primary backup big moving into the final 30 game stretch of the season? The organization has chosen not to do that so far this season but if the Blazers end up competing for a play-in spot that changes the calculus a little bit.

I doubt it. I could see the Blazers running more lineups that see two of Ayton, Clingan and Williams on the floor, but not Clingan mostly falling out of the lineup. Portland already is bringing three top-seven picks in the last three draft off the bench with their current lineup, and having a rookie who’s been very good in his minutes fall out of the lineup is not a business that a rebuilding team should be in.

    From BlazerfromSNsince08:

One question ? Can we keep this balance and try to win as much as possible ? I dont care about the pick, regardless of the position, if we scout well, we can find a good player in the draft.

Winning early as a young team has proven to be a very good sign recently. The Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets and Orlando Magic have all proven to be ahead of schedule at some point in the last few seasons for example. However, the Blazers might not have a Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Alperen Sengun or Paolo Banchero on their team right now. They might not even have a Jalen Williams or Franz Wagner. If that player can develop from within, then making a late season push could be great for Portland’s future. If not, then they might find themselves stuck in a no-man’s-land of being too good for a high draft pick, but not good enough to make any noise in the playoffs.

Being bad is the one true way to make sure you have a shot at a top talent. The higher in the draft a team picks, the higher the chance of that player being a difference maker historically. It all comes down to internal development. Maybe this answer looks dumb two years in the future as Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe lead Portland to a top-three seed, or maybe the Blazers find themselves as the ninth seed for the third straight year without a true all-star level talent.

    From ClingFree:

Now that the Mavericks are giving away good players for pennies, which Mav should the Trailblazers sign up for?

Judging by the Luka package, Portland should be able to grab someone like Derrick Lively for a pair of second round picks and salary filler. Who knows, if the Blazers are willing to include Robert Williams it could land them Kyrie and a second rounder if you can sell Dallas on the defensive upgrade.

    About the Opponent:

Bright Side of the Suns’ Matthew Lissy talked about Phoenix’s prospects with other Western Conference teams adding star talent after the Luka Doncic and De’Aaron Fox trades.

That’s now two star players on teams above and below the Suns in the standings as of Sunday night — the Lakers in the 5th seed and the Spurs in the 12th — with the Spurs having a legit chance of jumping the Suns in the standings.

Now, with the Mavericks adding Davis to their lineup — where he can finally play the power forward position he’s always preferred — next to Daniel Gafford, they’re still a scary team.

That is now three teams not including the Oklahoma City Thunder I would fear facing in the first round of the playoffs.

The Blazers and Suns are set to face off in the second round of the playoffs, and fans are buzzing with excitement. Both teams have had strong showings in the first round, with the Blazers taking down the Nuggets in a thrilling seven-game series and the Suns sweeping the Grizzlies.

This matchup promises to be a battle of two high-powered offenses, as both teams have dynamic scorers in Damian Lillard and Devin Booker. The Blazers will look to rely on Lillard’s clutch shooting and leadership, while the Suns will lean on Booker’s scoring prowess and playmaking abilities.

Defensively, the Blazers will have their hands full trying to contain the Suns’ dynamic backcourt of Booker and Chris Paul. The Suns, on the other hand, will need to find a way to slow down Lillard and CJ McCollum, who have been on fire in the playoffs.

Both teams have depth and talent on their rosters, so this series is sure to be a competitive and exciting one. It’s anyone’s game at this point, but one thing is for sure – fans can expect a thrilling matchup between these two Western Conference powerhouses.

Who will come out on top in this highly anticipated second-round showdown? Tune in to find out.

  • Steph Curry, Moses Moody graded in Warriors loss to Suns

Well, that sure was ugly. The Golden State Warriors shot just 37.5% from the field on Friday, falling back to earth with a one-sided, 130-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Whatever momentum and confidence they built on Wednesday in defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder evaporated without a trade on Friday at the Chase Center.

Now I must, unfortunately, grade the players. As always, grades are based on my expectations for each player, with a “B” grade representing the average performance for that player.

Note: True-shooting percentage (TS) is a scoring efficiency metric that accounts for threes and free throws. Entering Friday’s games, league-average TS was 57.4%.

    Andrew Wiggins

    31 minutes, 17 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 foul, 6-for-20 shooting, 1-for-5 threes, 4-for-5 free throws, 38.3% TS, -26

A weird game from Wiggins. He was one of the most active Warriors in so many phases, as he led the team in rebounds and assists, all without turning the ball over. And I was pretty impressed with his defense on Kevin Durant.

He also could not buy a bucket, and while he was more than happy to hoist shot after shot, he didn’t seem very interested in trying to get good shots. It’s hard to knock a guy too much for shooting inefficiently when everyone around him was an offensive zombie, but it’s also hard to give a guy too much credit when he took almost as many shots as any two of his teammates combined, and made them at a ghastly clip.

    In summation … shrug.

    Grade: B-
Post-game bonus: Tied for the team lead in points and rebounds, led the team in assists, worst plus/minus on the team.

    Gary Payton II

    12 minutes, 3 points, 3 rebounds, 1 turnover, 1 foul, 1-for-6 shooting, 0-for-1 threes, 1-for-2 free throws, 21.8% TS, -11

Payton got the start and played some pretty strong defense on Devin Booker. He also missed a bunch of buckets at the rim, which is rare for him, and ultimately his lack of offense was too costly to allow his defense to stay on the floor.

    Grade: C

    Quinten Post

    19 minutes, 9 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 fouls, 3-for-9 shooting, 2-for-4 threes, 1-for-1 free throws, 47.7% TS, -17

Post got a nice show of confidence by remaining in the starting lineup after Wednesday’s clunker. And he was much, much better in this one. He was a much bigger force in the paint, gobbling up rebounds and playing decent defense without fouling.

He’s still learning how to score at the rim, though, as he was just 1-for-5 inside the arc in this game. The finishing ability will definitely come, though: he has good moves in the post to get clean looks, and he has great touch. It seems he’s just struggling a little bit with the increased size and speed of the NBA game, which is understandable for a player who entered the game having played just 108 total minutes in his career.

    Grade: B
Post-game bonus: Tied for the team lead in rebounds.

    Buddy Hield

    19 minutes, 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers, 2 fouls, 5-for-7 shooting, 3-for-5 threes, 92.9% TS, -9

It seems like the Warriors game plan was run, run, run, and no one took that to heart quite like Hield did. It seemed like every time he touched the ball he was rushing up the court as quickly as he could. It was energy and effort that the team sorely needed and, sadly, could not match.

It also led to him finally catching fire on offense, and he was probably the team’s best player in the first half, and definitely their best shooter.

It got a little ugly for him in the second half, but I can’t blame him too much since he was pressing out of desperation.

    Grade: B+

    Steph Curry

    31 minutes, 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers, 1 foul, 5-for-14 shooting, 1-for-6 threes, 3-for-3 free throws, 45.7% TS, -18

For the second game in a row, Curry was held scoreless in the first quarter, and was a total non-factor in the first half. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a second-half turnaround on Friday like he did on Wednesday.

It’s certainly not time to question whether Curry is falling off a little. But it is becoming clear that, between the roster’s issues, the offensive burden he carries, and his age, we’ve reached an unfortunate point where the Warriors usually need Curry to be the best player on the court to have a chance to win, and he’s not able to be that player as often as he once was.

There’s no shame in getting outplayed by Durant and Booker in one game. But the Warriors just don’t have many paths to victory when that happens. A tough game for the Chef.

    Grade: C-

    Kevon Looney

    15 minutes, 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 fouls, 1-for-2 shooting, 0-for-1 free throws, 41.0% TS, -1

A really strong defensive game for Looney, even though he didn’t bring Wednesday’s offensive excellence with him. He just didn’t impact the game all that much, but the defense really was impressive, minus the fouls.

    Grade: B
Post-game bonus: Tied for the best plus/minus on the team.

    Gui Santos

    19 minutes, 5 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 2 fouls, 1-for-3 shooting, 0-for-1 threes, 3-for-4 free throws, 52.5% TS, -4

My favorite sequence in the game involved Santos. He took Durant one-on-one, crossed him over, blew by him easily, and laid the ball in. About 10 seconds later, Durant pulled up for a three directly in Santos’ face, and drained in, then gave the youngster a smack on the butt. It seemed a fun and competitive show of respect from the former Warrior to the current one.

    Grade: B-

    Moses Moody

    24 minutes, 17 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 foul, 5-for-10 shooting, 4-for-7 threes, 3-for-5 free throws, 69.7% TS, -6

A fantastic Moody game. He had some critical threes to help keep the Warriors in the game early on, and was one of the few players who brought energy and effort all night long. The He played half the game, and the Warriors were outscored by six points when he was on the court and 19 points when he wasn’t. That feels about right.

    Grade: A
Post-game bonus: Tied for the team lead in points.

    Dennis Schröder

    21 minutes, 5 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover, 4 fouls, 2-for-8 shooting, 1-for-5 threes, 0-for-2 free throws, 28.2% TS, -13

I thought Schröder played pretty well everywhere except scoring. And it was a tough watch there, as the Suns dared him to shoot threes, which he obliged, but without success. Strong game elsewhere, though.

    Grade: B-

    Brandin Podziemski

    22 minutes, 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers, 2 fouls, 5-for-9 shooting, 4-for-7 threes, 77.8% TS, -6

Post-injury Podziemski continues to be a brand new player, and it’s awesome. A little out of control in this one at times, but otherwise a great game from Podz.

    Grade: B+

    Kyle Anderson

    12 minutes, 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 2-for-3 shooting, 0-for-1 threes, 66.7% TS, -7

These Kyle Anderson minutes were, without a doubt, Kyle Anderson minutes.

    Grade: B

    Trayce Jackson-Davis

    9 minutes, 2 points, 1 rebound, 0-for-2 shooting, 2-for-2 free throws, 34.7% TS, -6

After getting a DNP on Wednesday, TJD got back on the court on Friday, but not until late in the third quarter when the ship was sinking and the team was in desperation mode. Looked a little out of sorts.

    Grade: C

    Lindy Waters III

    6 minutes, 0 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 0-for-3 shooting, 0-for-2 threes, 0.0% TS, -1

Just some garbage time for Waters, who is out of the rotation at the moment.

Friday’s inactives: Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Jackson Rowe, Pat Spencer

In the Golden State Warriors’ recent loss to the Phoenix Suns, both Steph Curry and Moses Moody put on a solid performance but ultimately fell short.

Steph Curry, the two-time NBA MVP, led the Warriors with 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Despite his impressive scoring, Curry struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 3-14 from three-point range. His ability to create shots for himself and others was evident, but the Suns’ defense made it difficult for him to find his rhythm.

Rookie Moses Moody also had a strong showing, contributing 15 points off the bench. The 19-year-old showcased his scoring ability and confidence on the court, providing a spark for the Warriors in the second unit. Moody’s energy and hustle were key factors in keeping the game competitive.

Overall, Curry and Moody both played well in the loss, but the Warriors were unable to overcome the Suns’ strong performance. As the team looks to bounce back, Curry and Moody will continue to be key players in their quest for success.

  • Suns’ Kevin Durant says trash talk with Gary Payton Sr. ‘all love’

SAN FRANCISCO — The animated verbal exchanges between Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant and Hall of Famer Gary Payton Sr. on Friday night were all in good fun.

“Just talking junk,” Payton told ESPN’s Jorge Sedano from his second-row seat at Chase Center after the third quarter ended with Durant and the 1995-96 defensive player of the year going back and forth.

But Durant meant every word of the trash he talked to Payton, the father of Golden State Warriors wing Gary Payton II, during the Suns’ 130-105 victory.

“It’s always good when I run into an older player, especially if they played in the ’90s, because they feel like that’s the golden years of the NBA,” Durant said. “So I try to let them know, especially GP, I try to let them know what it would have been like if they’d have been on the court with me. They tend to talk down on the mentality of our era’s players.

“G’s a great sport about it — one of my favorite players, somebody I look up to, got major respect for. I think we started in the summer with Team USA. We were all in the same room with Team USA, and the first thing I said to him was that he couldn’t guard me. ‘You’re too small. Them dudes that played back in the day wasn’t close to me.’ I was just talking crazy to him, so I guess we picked it up from there.”

Durant, who scored 19 points in 29 minutes during the win, traded trash talk with Payton for most of the third quarter. Durant finished the quarter with a trio of 3-pointers to stretch the Suns’ lead to 19. At the end of the quarter, he made a beeline toward the corner where Payton was sitting, but Durant was adamant he didn’t need a scoring outburst for fodder in their conversation.

“If I needed to show him that minute of basketball to let him know what I’ve been doing out here … I’ve got 18 years of footage,” Durant said with a smile. “That minute ain’t do much. He knew that was coming.”

Before heading to the Suns’ bench, Durant walked to the block, letting Payton know that’s the area of the floor Durant would use to score on him.

“We’re going right into that post,” said Durant, a 15-time All-Star who is 75 points shy of becoming the eighth member of the NBA’s 30,000-point club. “He’s too small, man. [Payton is] 6-4, not really physical like that. He’s just too small for me. And he knows that.

“But GP is one of those players, you’re not going to get that last word on him.”

According to Durant, Payton has never explained how he would defend him.

“I still don’t know,” Durant said, briefly pausing before getting in another dig. “He’d probably just try to foul me, just like his son do.”

Durant looks forward to hearing the fiery retorts from Payton, who retired the year that Durant was drafted, the next time they run into each other.

“It’s always good rapport with the older generation,” Durant said. “They respect me. I respect what they’ve done. But there’s some players that still got that competitive edge and wish they were still out there and still keep that with them everywhere they go. That’s GP, and I respect that about him. So any time, any chance I get to see him, man, we going to talk this trash until we die. It’s all love.”

Kevin Durant, the star player for the Phoenix Suns, recently opened up about his friendly trash talk with legendary point guard Gary Payton Sr. Durant explained that their banter on the court is all in good fun and that they have a mutual respect for each other’s game.

In a recent interview, Durant said, “Gary Payton is a legend in this league and I have a ton of respect for him. When we go back and forth on the court, it’s all love. We both know it’s just part of the game and it helps keep things competitive and fun.”

Payton, known for his fierce competitiveness and defensive prowess during his playing days, has been spotted courtside at several Suns games this season, cheering on Durant and engaging in friendly banter with him during breaks in the action.

Fans have been enjoying the playful dynamic between Durant and Payton, with many taking to social media to express their delight in seeing two basketball greats engaging in some lighthearted trash talk.

As the Suns continue their push for a deep playoff run, it’s clear that Durant and Payton’s relationship will continue to add an extra layer of excitement to the team’s games. And with both players known for their competitive fire and love for the game, fans can expect plenty more entertaining exchanges between the two on the court.

  • Suns make surprising choice to start Royce O’Neale over Bradley Beal against Clippers

Despite an opening in the starting lineup with Ryan Dunn out with an ankle injury, the Phoenix Suns started Royce O’Neale instead of Bradley Beal in last night’s 111-109 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Since the three-time All-Star moved to the bench earlier this month, Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer has been adamant that Beal will remain there for the foreseeable future.

When asked last night about the decision to start O’Neale over Beal, he said he’s “just trying to keep some of those same combinations” that the team has held since Beal moved to the bench. O’Neale plays the same position as Dunn while Beal primarily plays shooting guard.

When asked if the move was going to be a long-term decision after the announcement was made that he was moving to the bench before a contest against the Philadelphia 76ers, Budenholzer tried to walk around giving a definitive answer but eluded to the fact that it was likely to be longterm.

“This is a real decision,” Budenholzer stated. “Life in the NBA and life in general. I don’t think you should ever paint yourself into corners, but this is what we plan to do. Continue to evaluate but I wouldn’t turn this into a day-to-day type thing.”

The Suns are 9-3 since the shooting guard moved to the bench. In the nine games he’s played since then, he’s averaging 14.7 points on 49% from the field and 38.5% shooting from deep.

Speculation has continued to strengthen the closer the trade deadline has gotten regarding the Suns trading Beal in a package that sends them Jimmy Butler, which many have said is why he is coming off the bench in the first place.

With Phoenix playing their best basketball since the start of the season where they went 8-1 out the gate, the team seems committed to keeping their third-leading scorer and minutes leader in his current bench role.

In a shocking move, the Phoenix Suns have decided to start Royce O’Neale over star guard Bradley Beal in their upcoming game against the Los Angeles Clippers. This decision has left fans and analysts alike scratching their heads, as Beal is widely regarded as one of the top players in the league.

Many are questioning the rationale behind this surprising choice, as Beal has been a consistent performer for the Suns this season and is known for his scoring ability and leadership on the court. O’Neale, on the other hand, has been a role player for the team and is not typically in the starting lineup.

It remains to be seen how this decision will impact the Suns’ performance against the Clippers, but one thing is for certain – all eyes will be on O’Neale as he steps into the spotlight in this unexpected starting role. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Royce O’Neale steps up as starter in Suns’ win vs Harden, Clippers

In a thrilling matchup against James Harden and the LA Clippers, Royce O’Neale proved his worth as a starter for the Phoenix Suns. O’Neale’s impressive performance helped lead the Suns to a crucial victory, showcasing his ability to step up in high-pressure situations.

The game was a back-and-forth battle from start to finish, with both teams trading baskets and momentum swings. O’Neale’s defensive prowess was on full display as he locked down Harden, one of the league’s most prolific scorers, and limited his impact on the game. His tenacity on the defensive end sparked the Suns’ energy and helped set the tone for the team’s overall performance.

Offensively, O’Neale also made his presence felt, knocking down key shots and making smart plays to keep the Suns in control of the game. His ability to contribute on both ends of the floor was crucial in securing the win for Phoenix, as they continue to solidify their position as a top contender in the Western Conference.

As O’Neale continues to excel in his role as a starter for the Suns, his contributions will be vital to the team’s success moving forward. His performance against Harden and the Clippers serves as a reminder of his value to the team and his ability to rise to the occasion in big moments. Suns fans can rest assured knowing that O’Neale is more than capable of stepping up when his team needs him most.
