  • Bill Burr and Billy Corgan address brother rumors in surprise first meeting

Whether or not Bill Burr and Billy Corgan actually share a father, they do have at least one thing in common: a vendetta against Howie Mandel.

The Howie Does Stuff host staged an (alleged) family reunion between the two Bills on the latest episode of his podcast — but much to their chagrin, he did so without telling the whole truth. Burr in particular was caught off guard when his visit to the pod was crashed by a “surprise” special guest: the Smashing Pumpkins guitarist who went viral a few months ago for theorizing that he and Burr may be half brothers.

“You’re an a–hole,” Burr immediately told Mandel, while shaking Corgan’s hand. This response was a surprise to Corgan, who insisted, “He told me you were cool with me coming.”

“That’s what he does,” Burr replied. When Corgan offered to leave, Burr sat back in his seat saying, “All right, f— it, I’ll do it.”

The comedian then directed his apparent irritation at Corgan. “Did you ever think the fact that I never told that story [meant] that maybe you shouldn’t?”

The story in question came up during Corgan’s November conversation with Mandel, when he revealed that 10 years prior, his stepmother told him that Burr “might be one of the children that your father sired in his days being a traveling musician.” Corgan himself recalled his father saying that he had a half-brother named Bill, who was born around the same time as him (Corgan is 57 and Burr 56). The musician insisted at the time that he was being serious, though he later expressed doubts about actually being related to Burr.

While reflecting on the theory with Mandel and Corgan, however, Burr hinted that there may be some truth to the story.

“He was a piece of s—,” he said of his father. “He had two kids this close together, and he gave them the same f—ing name? He thinks it’s different because he’s Billy and I’m Bill. That’s how he told the difference.”

Burr then clarified that while he has nothing against Corgan, the speculation brings up negative memories. In an effort to lighten the mood, Corgan reaffirmed his own doubts, gesturing to Burr and joking, “The fact that he said he can’t sing, I think, disproves that we’re related, ’cause I’m not funny, so…it goes both ways.”

Burr again expressed frustration with Corgan for sharing the story in the first place, asking, “Why did you feel the need to do that?” The musician defended himself by pointing to Mandel, explaining that he insisted Corgan share the story on air after being told privately.

Burr then tore into Mandel for setting up the encounter for the sake of “ratings,” quipping, “What was supposed to happen? Are we going to go play catch? We’re both in our 50s.”

Corgan jumped in, telling Mandel, “This is some Dr. Phil s— you got going on.”

Burr observed that he and Corgan were making a connection after all. “I think we’re kind of on the same page in thinking you’re kind of a d— right now,” he told Mandel.

At one point, Mandel stepped out of the room to let the two converse alone, while emotional piano music swelled in the background. Burr and Corgan took a few moments to discuss their “relationship with dad,” comparing the different details they knew of his life.

“It’s funny though? If we were born during the internet… I don’t think you can get away with that anymore. Like at some point, it did become funny to me that he did have multiple families. There was something wild about that,” Burr commented, then laughed, noting, “I’m kind of forgetting that we’re on a  podcast.”

“At least we broke the cycle,” Burr continued, then proceeded to mock the still-absent Mandel, poking fun at his America’s Got Talent gig.  “At least we’re not on some awful network show judging plate spinners, or whatever the fuck Howie’s career has become,” he quipped.

By the end of their conversation, Burr said he was convinced: “We have the same father.”

Representatives for Burr and Corgan did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment.

Watch the awkward interaction between Burr and Corgan below.

In a surprising turn of events, comedian Bill Burr and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan finally addressed long-standing rumors that they are actually long-lost brothers in a surprise first meeting. The two men, who share a striking resemblance and a similar sense of humor, came face to face for the first time at a comedy show in Los Angeles.

Fans have long speculated about the uncanny similarities between Burr and Corgan, from their physical appearance to their sarcastic wit. The rumors reached a fever pitch when a fan tweeted a side-by-side photo of the two, sparking a viral debate about whether they could be related.

During their meeting, both men addressed the rumors with their trademark humor. Burr joked, “I always knew there was something off about me, but I never thought it was because I was secretly related to Billy Corgan.” Corgan quipped back, “I guess that explains why I’m so funny and you’re so…musical?”

Despite the lighthearted banter, the two men seemed to genuinely enjoy meeting each other and even exchanged contact information to stay in touch. While the mystery of their possible siblinghood remains unsolved, their meeting was a memorable moment for fans of both comedians and musicians alike.

  • Surprise Team Listed as Potential Landing Spot For Jerami Grant

The Portland Trail Blazers are predicted to be one of the more active teams as the 2025 NBA trade deadline approaches.

From now until Feb. 6, a lot can happen, and the Blazers are expected to move to ship out one of their veteran players, including forward Jerami Grant.

Grant has been on the trading block for some time, and this could be the season the Blazers finally ship him out. The only question that arises is, ‘Where will Grant end up?’

Who will be willing to give up solid pieces and future picks for a player like Grant, who has digressed year by year?

It’s unclear, but Dan Favale of Bleacher Report listed a handful of players who could be on the move this trade deadline to a surprise landing spot.

Grant was on that list, and Favale listed the Toronto Raptors as one of the surprise landing spots for the 30-year-old.

“Acquiring Jerami Grant doesn’t perfectly square with the Toronto Raptors’ timeline. But they have a handful of short-term and expiring contracts—Bruce Brown, Chris Boucher, Kelly Olynyk—to use as salary anchors and a reported interest in doing…something…

“Of course, this is all predicated upon the Portland Trail Blazers almost exclusively looking to lop off his money without receiving top-tier assets in return—a likelier possibility given their direction and Grant’s performance this season.”

The Raptors would love to start over, and while potentially acquiring Grant would not help, they could get rid of some players they don’t want on their roster anymore.

Here is a potential deal that could work if the two sides wanted to get a deal done involving Grant.

    Raptors receive: Jerami Grant

Blazers receive: Kelly Olynyk, Chris Boucher, Davion Mitchell, and a 2025 second-round pick

Both the Blazers and Raptors would love to start all over, and while this trade would get the Blazers there faster, a potential addition of Grant to Toronto wouldn’t do much to ruin their chances at a great pick.

The Raptors would like to shake up their roster, similar to the Blazers, and only time will tell if or when they do just that.

The trade deadline is less than two weeks away, and things will start to get real soon.

The Toronto Raptors have emerged as a surprise team listed as a potential landing spot for Jerami Grant. With the NBA trade deadline rapidly approaching, rumors have been swirling about potential moves that could shake up the league.

Grant, who currently plays for the Detroit Pistons, has been a standout player this season, averaging 22.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. His versatile skill set and ability to contribute on both ends of the court has made him an attractive target for many teams.

The Raptors, who have struggled this season and are looking to make a push for the playoffs, have reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Grant to bolster their roster. With their strong defensive identity and emphasis on player development, Grant could be a great fit in Toronto.

While nothing is set in stone, the possibility of Grant joining the Raptors has sent shockwaves through the NBA community. Fans and analysts alike are eagerly awaiting to see if this potential move comes to fruition and how it could impact the playoff race. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Man Utd make ‘surprise offer’ in Amorim ‘masterstroke’ that ‘ruins’ Barcelona, Real Madrid plans

Man Utd could ‘ruin’ the transfer plans of Barcelona and Real Madrid by triggering a clause in one player’s contract, according to reports.

The Red Devils are having a terrible season in the Premier League with their fortunate 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday moving them up one place to 12th in the table.

Man Utd have only won eight of their 23 Premier League matches this term and Ruben Amorim has been feeling the pressure in recent weeks.

Amorim reportedly broke a television in the Red Devils dressing room in a ‘furious’ rant at the players after their loss to Brighton, while he came out in an interview and called his squad “maybe the worst team in the history” of Man Utd.

The Man Utd boss has also taken a strict stance on players who don’t give their all in training with Amorim making an example of Marcus Rashford by omitting him from all but one squad since their Europa League clash against Viktoria Plzen in mid-December.

And Amorim admitted  on Sunday that he would rather play his goalkeeping coach over Rashford if he continues to give less than 100 per cent in training sessions.

The new Man Utd head coach is looking to bring in players who can thrive in his 3-4-3 system and feel comfortable with his playing style and philosophy.

And reports in Spain claim that Amorim is about to pull off a ‘masterstroke’ with a ‘surprise offer’ for Benfica wing-back Alvaro Carreras that ‘ruins’ the transfer plans of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

If the deal to Man Utd is confirmed, it ‘would leave the two Spanish giants without one of the jewels they have on their agenda for the future’.

Man Utd are said to be ‘keen to exploit’ a ‘contractual detail’ that they inserted into his agreement at Benfica with the Red Devils retaining a buy-back option worth around €20m.

Amorim ‘believes that Carreras would fit perfectly into his tactical scheme, and his arrival would be a key reinforcement’, while Barcelona and Real Madrid will be ‘forced to look for alternatives’.

The report adds that the ‘next few days will be decisive in confirming whether the young Spanish full-back becomes the new bet’ at Man Utd.

Man Utd: Erik ten Hag chose ‘better signing’ Antony over Barcelona, Liverpool ‘alternatives’
Man Utd untouchable could now be sold with Amorim ‘far from convinced’ by Ten Hag signing

Especially as it seems like Man Utd are edging ever closer to a deal for Lecce wing-back Patrick Dorgu with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming more talks today.

While a join report from Gianluca di Marzio and Melissa Reddy claims Man Utd and Lecce are just ironing out the final details of a potential transfer.

The duo wrote on Sky Sports: ‘Manchester United and Lecce are finalising the last details of payment terms for Patrick Dorgu on a deal worth £25m (€30m) + £5.9m (€7.5m) in add-ons.

‘Dorgu’s strong desire to join United has made the club optimistic a deal can be struck this week.

‘Meanwhile, talks are continuing between Napoli and Manchester United over Alejandro Garnacho.’

In a shocking turn of events, Manchester United has reportedly made a surprise offer for Sporting Lisbon’s highly sought-after manager, Ruben Amorim. The move has been described as a masterstroke by many in the football world, as it not only secures Amorim’s future at the club but also deals a blow to Barcelona and Real Madrid’s plans to poach the talented coach.

Amorim has been a revelation at Sporting Lisbon, leading the team to an unbeaten league campaign and securing their first Primeira Liga title in nearly two decades. His tactical acumen and ability to develop young players have caught the eye of several top clubs in Europe, with Barcelona and Real Madrid rumored to be interested in his services.

However, Manchester United’s surprise offer has thrown a spanner in the works for both Spanish giants. The Red Devils are reportedly willing to pay a hefty sum to secure Amorim’s signature, making it difficult for Barcelona and Real Madrid to compete financially.

This unexpected twist in the managerial merry-go-round has left fans and pundits alike stunned, with many praising Manchester United for their bold move. Only time will tell if Amorim will accept the offer, but one thing is for certain – his future at Sporting Lisbon is far from certain.

  • Clippers’ trade deadline strategy emerges amid surprise season

The Los Angeles Clippers have been one of the surprises of the NBA this season, pushing their record to an impressive 26-19 with a Saturday night home win over the Milwaukee Bucks. The team only recently got star Kawhi Leonard back from an injury that kept him out for the first third of the season, but the Clippers’ role players have helped support a revitalized James Harden running the show for Los Angeles.

With all of the success they’ve had so far this year, some fans may be expecting the Clippers to push all of their chips to the center of the table at the upcoming trade deadline in the hopes of making a run; however, recent intel from NBA insider Jake Fischer on Marc Stein’s Substack indicated otherwise.

“The Clippers, according to league sources, are still keen on keeping their books clean, indicating to rival front offices that they are reluctant to bring back any long-term salary in any potential trade activity over the remaining 12 days of NBA Trade Season,” reported Fischer. “The Clippers appear to be setting themselves up to try to truly capitalize on owner Steve Ballmer’s well-chronicled willingness to spend and the allure of their shiny new Intuit Dome home when Leonard’s tenure concludes.”

A careful approach for the Clippers

With this latest report, it would appear that Steve Ballmer and company are done taking big swings to bet on the decreasingly reliable availability of Kawhi Leonard. When Leonard first arrived in 2019, the Clippers took a huge risk by trading a treasure trove of assets to the Oklahoma City Thunder to pair him up with Paul George, and that ended up backfiring severely, not only resulting in no championships but also directly setting the stage for the Thunder’s current success.

Leonard signed a contract extension with the Clippers last season, so it will be a while before he is off of the books and Ballmer will reportedly be more willing to go big game hunting in free agency.

However, fans who were hoping the Clippers would try to make a run this season, especially considering how wide open the field seems to be in the Western Conference this season, will likely be disheartened by these latest reports.

The Los Angeles Clippers have been one of the biggest surprises of the NBA season so far, currently sitting near the top of the Western Conference standings. As the trade deadline approaches, the team’s strategy is starting to come into focus.

With a roster full of talent, including stars like Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers have the pieces in place to make a deep playoff run. However, there are still areas where they could look to improve before the trade deadline.

One potential area of need for the Clippers is at the point guard position. Despite the solid play of Reggie Jackson and Terance Mann, adding a veteran playmaker could provide some added stability to the team’s backcourt.

Additionally, the Clippers could look to add some frontcourt depth to bolster their interior defense and rebounding. With Serge Ibaka dealing with injuries and Ivica Zubac still developing, adding another big man could be a priority for the team.

Overall, the Clippers’ trade deadline strategy appears to be focused on adding complementary pieces to their already talented roster. By addressing their areas of need, the team could solidify their status as legitimate championship contenders. It will be interesting to see how the team navigates the trade deadline and positions themselves for a deep playoff run.

  • JM: Surprise! It’s the 2025 WWE Royal Rumble!

    Surprise! It’s the Royal Rumble.

My personal favourite PPV/PLE is almost here. As a citizen of His Majesty’s United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, watching WWE live takes serious commitment. As a fresh-faced youth I would generally stay up for every event, shrugging off fatigue the next day with an exuberance I now find staggering. As I approach my forties it’s almost impossible to contemplate deliberately staying up until 4am… Unless it’s that most Royal of all the Rumbles. The penchant for surprise, my love of an entrance theme’s first 3 seconds, and of course the regular dopamine hits make it a firm favourite in the Murray household.

    TL/DR: I love it.

This may stray slightly into the realms of fantasy booking, so if that’s not your bag please make your merry way to the comments section and hurl some abuse at me.

Today I’m discussing the art of the Royal Rumble surprise. It’s a staple of the art form, arguably the best way to give an historic superstar one last moment in the sun (without asking them to do anything strenuous). It’s also an excellent way to further a storyline, particularly if one of the superstars has been injured recently (looking at you, Jade Cargill), or even to begin one. Many a blood feud has begun with the simple act of throwing an opponent over the top rope and stealing their Wrestlemania dream from them.

I’m always excited for the Rumble, but this year is shaping up to be an excellent one. John Cena, Roman Reigns, CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, Seth Rollins, Sami Zayn, Jey Uso… The list of male superstars with a legitimate chance of winning is better than it’s been for years. And it’s similar, if not quite so star-studded yet, for the womenfolk: Charlotte Flair’s return, Nia Jax’s beef with Tiffy Time, Bianca Belair’s perennial main event challenge, Liv Morgan gaining one final shot at Rhea Ripley… Not to mention one or two top-tier players potentially waiting in the wings.

So let’s talk about the surprises. Some are more plausible than others but I’ve tried to root each entry in a bed of reason, allowing it to bloom with potential in the mind-garden of your brain, dear reader. Without further ado:

    The Rock

Earth’s third-best Rock seems to be floating continuously above the head of Roman Reigns, a ghostly, heavily-muscled apparition ready to attack at any given moment. I don’t buy “Nice Rock” for a second, The Great One is ramping up to something… But what? Would it be a huge surprise to see him in the Rumble? Not really, but it would still blow the roof off. And what better way to eliminate Roman Reigns? The OTC has been on such a winning streak for the last 4 years he can’t just be casually tossed out. No, even if he’s not an official entrant I can easily see Rock costing Roman his Wrestlemania revenge, setting them up for a Bloodline showdown.

    Jade Cargill

Look, you know how this goes. I’ve got to cover the more predictable predictions before I wow you with my powers of imagination. Cargill coming back in the Rumble makes all the sense in the world, she’s got a storyline ready to storm back into and the pop for her will be good (if probably unspectacular). She doesn’t need to spend long in the match. Return, show her power, maybe eliminate Charlotte just for fun, and then leave.

    William Goldberg

You can see it, can’t you? “Who’s number thirty?” Enter Goldberg. He spends 5 minutes in the Rumble before retiring in a losing effort against Gunther in the main event of Wrestlemania. And honestly? I’m kind of fine with that. Say what you want about his latter performances, Goldberg has a legitimate claim to being one of the biggest superstars in the history of professional wrestling. He’s got more Charisma than a Carpenter, he’s a multi-time world champion, and even now he looks a million quid. A superstar of his calibre deserves a Wrestlemania send-off and it can be a “main event” without going on last.

    Jordynne Grace

I mean, does this even count as a surprise anymore? Arguably it would be more surprising if we don’t see Jordynne Grace debut at the Rumble. Could she win it? Stranger things have happened, but I think it’s more likely we see her setting up her first WWE feud by crossing paths with someone mid-match. She’s an outstanding talent and could easily be in the mix for winning next year.

    Mick Foley

Please, please, please don’t do it Mick. You have absolutely nothing to prove to anyone about your wrestling ability. If you need the buzz of the crowd, come and do guest commentary. Announce the first two entrants. Act as a special guest enforcer. But please, don’t put yourself in the ring. You’ve given us more than enough of your blood and sweatsocks. I’m confident that I speak for all wrestling fans here: the weight loss is impressive enough in itself, don’t push yourself further than you have to. We don’t want to see you get hurt.

    Alexa Bliss

Will she? Won’t she? Should she? All excellent questions, thank you for asking. I usually think of myself as quite an even-minded wrestling fan. I can happily read the opinions of others without feeling the need to pound vitriol into my keyboard with the fury of a thousand suns. But on this particular occasion, I categorially do not understand the commenters who claim Alexa Bliss wouldn’t add value to the WWE again.

Now, if she doesn’t want to come back that’s another matter entirely, but to imply that she won’t be able to hold her own against literally anyone on the roster is insane to me. The women’s roster is getting deeper and better all the time, but I’d argue that Alexa Bliss brings better character work than anyone else on the current roster. I’d love her to come back.

    Wade Barrett

Ah, now we’re talking aren’t we? Barrett and McIntyre gave us a little teaser earlier in the year and (albeit with a clear and obvious domestic-player-bias) I am 100% here for it. England v Scotland on the grandest stage of them all? Sign me up. It’s also beautifully logical storytelling. Wade returning is a shock. He gets lucky and eliminates McIntyre. Drew pulls him out of the ring in anger. It’s a tale as old as time, and with their combined storytelling skill I have no doubt it would be one of the most captivating feuds heading into Wrestlemania. Personally, this is the one I’m hanging my hat on. I’ll be disappointed if we don’t see it, unless it’s being saved for an England PLE later in the year. Wade would be given a hero’s welcome.

    AJ Lee

Speaking of hero’s welcomes, can you imagine the noise we’ll hear if AJ returns to the Rumble? CM Punk is an expert at blurring the lines between story and reality, and the little teases of an AJ return could very well just be him messing with us. But if he’s not… Don’t get me wrong, I’d rather AJ returned full-time and added to an incredibly stacked women’s roster, but even if it’s just a one-off surprise appearance it’ll go down in history as one of the biggest Rumble pops ever. Now that her husband appears firmly embedded in the company (and with a whole heap of Netflix money lying around), could she be tempted? I flipping hope so.

    William Regal

The case of William Regal is a strange one. You could argue that his career was good without being great, a smattering of missed opportunities hidden between fantastic character work, impressive technical ability, and a handful of well-told storylines. And yet, as time goes by, he’s becoming more and more revered in the wrestling world. Not just by his peers, but by more casual fans as well. It feels like wrestling fans are gaining awareness of his talents on a level never really appreciated during his peak years. Maybe this will be the year we see him celebrated in the ring as well as out of it.

    Nikki Bella

This would be a curveball during Cena’s farewell tour, wouldn’t it? If the rumours are true, what better way to test the waters than with a Royal Rumble return? It’s not one that I’m particularly excited to see, but I think the Bella Twins deserve more credit than they currently receive as performers. While Nikki may not have reached the Stratusphere when it comes to wrestlers who started as eye candy, she’s built a highly respectable in-ring career for herself and received big crowd reactions at a time when most women didn’t. It’s a guaranteed Rumble pop if she does decide to return.

    Joe Hendry

On the subject of guaranteed Rumble pops… All I’ll say is this: I believe. Maybe this has become slightly less likely now that he’s the TNA champion. After all, what does it say about your “World Title” if the incumbent feels the need to fight for another one? On the flip side, maybe it makes sense that Joe Hendry would want to unify both belts and be a truly undisputed champion. You know what? Maybe it doesn’t matter if it makes sense. Maybe this is one crowd moment that we can’t afford not to experience. Make it happen, Trips ol’ buddy. Make it happen.

    Tessa Blanchard

     Ain’t gonna happen.

    Dolph Ziggler

It seems to me that Dolph is going to be this generation’s William Regal. At times it seemed like he was the hottest thing in the business; that Survivor Series match must go down as one of the all-time biggest missed opportunities in WWE history. Dolph was a made man that night, and they didn’t capitalise on it. Now that he’s not in possession of the TNA title, could you have him come out to his old WWE music? It’s tricky but not impossible, and I think the WWE top brass will be surprised at how big a pop he commands.

    Mandy Rose

It’s been a rough couple of weeks for Corey Graves, but this could make it all worthwhile. WWE has been through a lot of changes since Mandy Rose was fired. Is it beyond the realms of possibility that they’d reconcile? Contrary to my Alexa Bliss opinions, I don’t think they need Mandy as a full-time performer given the sheer depth of talent they have on the roster. But a one-off Royal Rumble appearance would draw a strong crowd reaction and be a nice moment to say “sorry about all that kerfuffle before”.

    Either/Both Hardys

It feels like they should have one last WWE moment. It also feels like they’re past the point where they need a full-time run. If there were such a thing as a tag-team Royal Rumble (you’re welcome, Triple H) then they’d be a shoe-in for a guest appearance. As it stands, while I wouldn’t be utterly shocked to see them, I would be surprised. But then again, stranger things have happened. If you’re going to let TNA wrestlers compete in the Rumble, doesn’t it make sense for them to be the most recognisable ones you’ve got?

    Big E Langston

Wouldn’t you love to see it? I certainly would. If there is to be a true payoff to New Day’s current storyline, it has to start here. It has to start with Big E in the Royal Rumble. Whether he’s an actual participant or just gets physically involved with Kofi and Xavier, this is the perfect time to do it. But, while my heart believes it could happen, my head suspects that this is the least likely of all the wildcard entries. But you never know, do you? You never know.

So, what say you, dear reader? Who have I missed? Who would be ridiculous? Who would you pop the most for? Who deserves it the most? More importantly, who writes a surprise entrants column and doesn’t even mention Becky Lynch?

Attention WWE fans, get ready to be shocked and surprised because it’s time for the 2025 Royal Rumble!

This year’s Royal Rumble is going to be bigger and better than ever, with the element of surprise at an all-time high. Who will make their unexpected return to the ring? Which superstars will make a shocking debut?

  • Ken Fisher’s surprise prediction for the stock market in 2025

Last month, during the thick of the holidays, I found myself in a rare though not totally unprecedented predicament: I wasn’t sure which way to bet on the stock market in the year ahead.

In my December column, I told you there were three possible 2025 outcomes – all of them seemingly likely, and to a vexingly similar degree. I also told you that I’d come back to you when I could conclude which is, in fact, the most likely.

Well, I’m back – and with an answer that has surprised me in more ways than one.

American investors hate losses more than they love comparable sized gains Getty Images

Recall the three possible outcomes I had outlined: A minor decline, a small single-digit positive year, or another big year like 2023’s and 2024’s gains. I also said the latter was the least expected and would shock the most people because three big years in a row is legendarily rare.

Now, I dare say – brace for the legendarily rare. That’s because I believe that what is most likely is a stock market gain of 15% to 25% – maybe slightly bigger.

There is, however, also one major twist here that came even less expected for me – and which hence may be even more universally shocking. The twist is that European stocks should lead, quietly but strongly, as my forecast above is for the MSCI World index. The S&P 500 should lag Europe.

What has changed since year-end?  As I said then, I would keep researching for signs of sentiment that would swing direction and that the swing would happen soon.

I also told you that US investors were optimistic while foreign ones were pessimistic. As it turns out, the overseas pessimism is extreme – vastly more depressed overall than Americans are optimistic. Hence, even a moderate year for foreign GDP, particularly European, would lead to huge positive surprise for them. They’re just more sensitive right now.

Decades ago, behaviorists proved American investors hate losses more than they love comparable sized gains – about 2 ½ times as much. My former research partner Meir Statman and I then deployed the same methodology showing UK and German investors are even more skittish about losses, by factors of 4 to 1 and 6 to 1, respectively.

Overseas pessimism is extreme, and the twist is that European stocks should lead. EPA

Europeans are just more risk averse than Americans. I’ve long known that. Seemingly few remember it.

Now, I’ve discovered how much more that is the case right now than usual, as absolute Trump terror overwhelms Europeans — hugely more than was measurable in December. It is shockingly so, almost beyond words. Since the US election, they have become extraordinarily pessimistic. It is as if they were MSNBC commentators, only without the occasional smiles and jokes.

And, so, European stocks are too depressed and, also but less so, most non-US markets. So, most, but of course not all, are quietly beating the S&P 500 year to date. Britain, Germany and Israel have actually hit new all-time highs in 2025.

Coupled to that, inherent in the make-up of American versus foreign stocks, value stocks, meaning statistically cheaper on earnings and other measures than pricier growth stocks, should outshine growth stocks — for the first sustained time in years.

But why do I say it is “inherent”? In industry sectors America and growth stocks are intertwined. By market cap weighting almost all growth stocks are American. Tech and Communication Services total over 40% of the S&P 500, almost none of Europe.

Hence, when growth stocks like the Magnificent 7 lag the market, as evidenced by the Nasdaq lagging the S&P 500 even when both rise, value must be leading. Europe too! But this is more than just sectors. It is also country sentiment.

Since the US election, Europeans have become extraordinarily pessimistic. AP

You doubt me?  OK, but it is happening right in front of your eyes. Grab your iPhone. Use its normal Apple News stock market app to look up the S&P 500, the Nasdaq composite, and MSCI Europe. There it is. Europe leads.

And if you look at specific European countries you will see it broadly spread except Denmark (which is mostly Novo Nordisk weakness). Said otherwise, Europe is leading the S&P 500 which is leading Nasdaq.

While at it, I’ll add that I expect Emerging Markets stocks to lag, as they fall mostly across categories I expect to lag like utilities and struggling commodities.

So please – cheer up and mind your geography as you think about stocks this year. And Happy 2025.

In a recent interview, renowned investor Ken Fisher shocked the financial world with his bold prediction for the stock market in 2025. Fisher, known for his contrarian views and uncanny ability to predict market trends, believes that by 2025, we will see a major shift in market dynamics.

According to Fisher, the traditional sectors that have long been considered safe bets, such as technology and healthcare, will start to underperform. Instead, he predicts that industries like renewable energy, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence will see explosive growth and become the new darlings of the stock market.

Fisher’s prediction has raised eyebrows among many investors, who are skeptical of such a drastic shift in market trends. However, Fisher has a track record of being ahead of the curve, and his insights are always worth considering.

As we approach 2025, it will be interesting to see if Fisher’s prediction comes to fruition and how it will impact the investment landscape. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.
