FC Barcelona’s squad list for its Champions League league phase trip to Benfica on Tuesday had a surprise when it was published via the club’s official website and social media accounts on Monday afternoon.
We of course know that Dani Olmo will play no part in the fixture after he suffered a right calf strain.
Olmo travelled to Getafe for Saturday’s frustrating 1-1 La Liga draw, making it off the bench but picking up the mentioned injury which Barca confirmed the following day.
“Dani Olmo has an overload in the calf of his right leg. He is out for the next game and a return to the dynamic with the team will be determined according to his evolution,” correspondence on the matter in Spanish read.
While Olmo will certainly miss the Benfica clash, he is also doubtful for a Sunday night league meeting with Valencia.
In the meantime, his absence has allowed Ansu Fati to return to the fold, after the number 10 was omitted from head coach Hansi Flick’s last four squad lists before him finally making one to travel to Lisbon.
In prematch press conferences as of late, Flick has explained why Fati has been snubbed at a time the youngster and Lamine Yamal of his era is being linked with a potential move to the Premier League.
“He was injured, but after the injury he didn’t show us his one hundred percent. And it’s a shame for him and for us, he did not give it his all. He has to work like everyone else and give his best, that’s what we want,” Flick said ahead of the Betis showdown.
Though they are not direct positional rivals as such despite Olmo being able to operate on the left wing, Fati needs to take advantage of Olmo’s absence to try and work his way back into Flick’s plans.

The Boston Red Sox have been tied to arguably the best remaining free agent on the open market but hasn’t gotten a deal done.
Boston has been linked to Alex Bregman for a few months at this point and yet he remains on the open market although manager Alex Cora has said over and over how much he loves him. Bregman makes almost too much sense for Boston.
He would fill a hole in the middle of the lineup and also significantly bolster the defense which has been not spoken about enough. The Red Sox’s defense has been rough over the last few years and Bregman could help fix it.
While this is the case, MLB.com’s Thomas Harrigan had the Detroit Tigers as the “best fit” for Bregman over Boston.
“Alex Bregman, 3B. Best fit: Tigers,” Harrigan said. It might seem like the Tigers’ window of contention is just opening after the club made a surprising run to the playoffs in 2024. But with reigning American League Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal under team control for only two more seasons, Detroit cannot afford to be complacent. Although the Tigers did sign second baseman Gleyber Torres to a one-year deal, they need to do more to improve a lineup that tied for 19th in the Majors in runs scored last season.
“Even looking beyond his previous connection with Detroit manager A.J. Hinch from their time together in Houston, Bregman is a logical fit for a Tigers team with an unsettled hot-corner situation and the payroll flexibility to make a big splash.”

Gian Piero Gasperini has confirmed that Italy U19 talent Marco Palestra is set to earn his full Champions League debut when Atalanta take on Sturm Graz in the Champions League on Tuesday night, which he feels ‘can be a nice surprise’ for the supporters.
Atalanta are currently in 13th place in the Champions League standings after six matches, but could secure their position in the play-off round with a victory against the Austrian outfit on Tuesday night.
“It’s a Champions League game, we haven’t secured qualification yet, tomorrow could be a decisive day,” Gasperini said during his pre-match press conference on Monday evening, reported via TMW.

Gasperini confirmed that Nicolo Zaniolo will not be involved for Atalanta on Tuesday night, but insisted that the set-back is nothing serious and nothing to worry about.
“He’s had a bit of discomfort. It’s nothing serious, he won’t play tomorrow, but we’ll see afterwards,” he said.
Gasp was also full of praise for goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, who joined him for the pre-match press conferences.
“He has always been a young guy with good prospects. I think he has also matured as a person, with great humility, even in good moments like now. He always has a desire to improve.”

The 19-year-old played for 15 minutes off the bench against Young Boys earlier in the campaign and also earned his full senior debut in the 6-1 Coppa Italia victory over Cesena earlier in the season. Otherwise, he has only ever appeared off the bench for La Dea thus far.
“Tomorrow I will definitely play Palestra, I think the time has come to launch him in an important game. I think this guy can be a nice surprise.”

SMYRNA, Tenn. (WZTV) — A local high school band will be performing at the Inauguration Day Parade in Washington D.C., thanks to a generous final donation.
Stewarts Creek High School’s marching band in Smyrna was selected to represent Tennessee in the 60th Inaugural Presidential Parade of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance on January 20 in D.C. The only snag was each selected high school is expected to cover the cost of the trip. In their case, for all 120 band members and 40 adult staff members and chaperones.
Stewarts Creek was able to raise most of the amount needed for the entire band to travel to the inauguration but was short $40,000.
On Thursday, Tractor Supply surprised the band with the final $40,000 needed to reach their $130,000 goal.

On Monday, Rutherford County Schools reported Stewart Creek High Band was reinstated to perform in the 60th Presidential Inauguration parade.

Exciting news for Smyrna High School! The school band has been selected to perform at the upcoming inauguration parade in Washington D.C. after receiving a surprise donation that made their participation possible.
The band had been fundraising for months in hopes of being able to make the trip to D.C. for the prestigious event, but they were still short of their goal. That’s when a generous donor stepped in and provided the remaining funds needed for the band to make the trip.
