  • Nearly all of D.C. shut down for Trump’s inauguration. So why was there no designated survivor?

President Donald Trump’s swearing-in ceremony Monday featured the largest, most complex security footprint of any inauguration in U.S. history.

The nation’s capital was transformed seemingly overnight from a pedestrian-friendly city into a daunting and impenetrable fortress – the result of a multi-agency task force that erected 30 miles of anti-scale fencing, coordinated aerial surveillance and drones, and saw the deployment of tens of thousands of law enforcement, military personnel, undercover agents, and national guard trucks across D.C.

The impressive, whole-of-government security effort on Inauguration Day was unprecedented, and not without reason: Trump was the victim of two assassination attempts during the 2024 campaign — including a shooter who came so close to him as to nick his ear — and a domestic threat landscape that was heightened further by the terrorist-inspired attack in New Orleans and the execution-style killing of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan late last year.

It’s notable, then, that this year’s sprawling security footprint did not expressly include one key component considered fundamental to U.S. tradition: The naming of a designated survivor.

In D.C., the tightly coordinated federal protection efforts were carefully planned long ahead of Trump’s inauguration ceremony by the Secret Service and many other federal agencies.

It’s both a nod to recent security concerns, and more largely an effort to protect the U.S. body politic, foreign dignitaries, donors, and thousands of attendees from any mass catastrophe or threat.

The designated survivor, who in a catastrophic event would bear the responsibility of leading the U.S. in the aftermath of a crisis, is typically a Cabinet officer when major security events put elected officials all in one spot, such as inaugurations and State of the Union addresses.

WORLD LEADERS REACT AS TRUMP RE-ENTERS WHITE HOUSE

Previous designated survivors have included former DHS secretary Jeh Johnson, former Energy Secretary Rick Perry, and former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who was tapped for the role during President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009.

Gates, a George W. Bush appointee, was kept on by Obama and served in his Pentagon role until July 2011, according to his official Defense Department biography.

The survivor’s location, and sometimes identity, remains confidential until after the event disperses and its attendees have safely returned home. In high-profile events, a broader contingency plan is in place.

As Garrett Graff reported in 2016, Gates’s role as designated survivor during Obama’s inauguration also included the support of another government heavyweight — James Clapper, then the undersecretary of intelligence — who stowed away during the ceremony deep in an underground government bunker in Pennsylvania, a backup to the backup, if you will, and a nod at the detailed succession plan carefully crafted by a group defense, intelligence, and other federal agencies over the span of some 40-plus years.

So it was notable that no designated survivor was named during the 47th presidential inauguration.

No reason was given for the absence of the designated survivor, which was first reported by NBC News.

It’s possible that the sprawling security presence coordinated in the run-up to Jan. 20 was deemed sufficient to protect against any threats.

It’s also possible the event, which was held indoors and thus restricted to the public and to members of the news media, was limited enough as not to warrant the designated survivor.

Ahead of the event, FBI and Secret Service personnel stressed the stringent security measures in place and the tight vetting of any ticketed attendees.

David Sundberg of the FBI’s Washington Field Office told Fox News earlier this week that the bureau was not tracking “any specific or credible threats” for Inauguration Day.

“All attendees will undergo screening,” said Matt McCool, special agent in charge of the Secret Service’s Washington Field Office.

These individuals told Fox News that the fencing alone is more than any other designated National Special Security Event in the past.

“Designated checkpoints will be set up for members of the public interested in attending the inauguration,” McCool said ahead of the inauguration — a protocol also applied to attendees of the modified Capital One festivities, which were moved inside due to frigid temperatures.

Neither the White House, DHS nor the FBI immediately responded to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on the absence of a designated survivor.

Fox News Digital’s Elizabeth Elkind contributed to this report.

As the nation’s capital came to a standstill for Donald Trump’s inauguration, one crucial detail was missing – a designated survivor. In the event of a catastrophic attack that wipes out the entire line of presidential succession, the designated survivor is a high-ranking official who is kept in a secure location during major events like inaugurations to ensure the continuity of government.

With nearly all of Washington, D.C. shut down for Trump’s inauguration, the absence of a designated survivor raised eyebrows and concerns about the potential vulnerability of the government. In past inaugurations, a designated survivor was always in place as a precautionary measure, but this time, it seems that the tradition was overlooked.

The lack of a designated survivor highlights the importance of careful planning and preparation for worst-case scenarios, especially in a time of heightened security threats. As the new administration takes office, it is crucial that steps are taken to ensure the safety and stability of our government in the face of potential threats. Let’s hope that this oversight does not come back to haunt us in the future.

  • did they pick a designated survivor to stay behind? – NBC New York

Hundreds of people were packed into the Capitol Rotunda on Monday for President Donald J. Trump‘s second inauguration, making him the 47th president of the United States.

The intimate crowd, condensed and moved inside due to weather concerns, was made up of politicians, dignitaries, big tech CEOs, and family members of the returning president.

No matter the size of the crowd, one person is typically misses out on the inauguration: the “designated survivor.” Historically, one person in the line of succession to the presidency is selected to sit out the ceremony.

The designated survivor would take the reins of government in the case of catastrophe that could incapacitate the president, vice president, and speaker of the House.

The identity of the designated survivor for a State of the Union address, or in this case an inauguration, is often kept secret. Sometimes, the identity will be revealed shortly after the event.

But for Trump’s second inauguration, no designated survivor was selected.

NBC News learned that no government official was set aside for Tuesday’s swearing-in of the 47th president. There was an immediate explanation given as to why.

Donald Trump is sworn in as the 47th President of the United States.

In the wake of recent events, many are wondering: did they pick a designated survivor to stay behind? Tune in to NBC New York for the latest updates on this important decision and what it means for the future. #DesignatedSurvivor #NBCNewYork #StayInformed

  • Glen Powell Starred in This Short-Lived ‘Survivor’ Series for Kids

You may know Glen Powell as Hollywood’s new “it” boy, starring in blockbuster films like Twisters and Anyone But You. Although the actor has really made a name for himself as a Hollywood heartthrob, you’d never guess where we’ve seen Powell on our screens before. The Texas native appeared on one episode of a reality competition show called Endurance when he was 13 – and he didn’t seem to be happy that his reality TV past was out. Sure, he chases twisters and all, but he never seemed like the “survivor” type.

Stephen Colbert Brings Up Glen Powell’s Shocking Reality TV Past

Powell appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in July 2024 to promote his new film Twisters. In typical Stephen Colbert fashion, he pulled out all the stops, unearthing the actor’s reality show past. Colbert told the audience about one of Powell’s “earlier forays into the world of action that wasn’t as successful,” pulling out a picture of him from Discovery KidsEndurance. Powell admitted he was on a “survivor” type reality show when he was 13. He described Endurance as a show “Where they threw kids to Mexico… and they pit them against each other.”

Powell did not seem too pleased that his reality TV past was out. Right when Colbert took out the photo, Powell was visibly embarrassed, saying, “It’s really pretty hard for me to talk about, to be honest…I’ve never talked about this publicly ever.” During the segment, Powell reveals why he is so embarrassed about his time on the show, saying that he wanted to be on the show really badly, but he got kicked off on the first episode. Although Powell is killing the Hollywood heartthrob game, he certainly did not kill the competition. Nobody wants to be the first one kicked out of a competition, especially one airing on national television.

Colbert goes the extra mile, pulling out a clip of Powell getting eliminated from the Discovery Kids show. The clip shows the actor as a young teenager holding onto a monkey bar before losing his grip and falling into the water below him. In a confessional that followed, Powell talks about the challenge, saying, “I thought I could do it for a long time, but my balance didn’t think so.” He goes on to admit his defeat, adding, “When I realized I was going home, it was the worst feeling.” Watching the clip years later, Powell still had a reaction to his old embarrassment and defeat.

Stephen quickly pivots to yet another antic, reading Powell’s bio for the show. The bio read: “Glen likes making his own movies and is working to buy a professional video camera by mowing lawns and acting in commercials.” Stephen wrapped it up on a hilarious note, reading, “He likes to tap dance and sing at nursing homes.” Powell bursts out into laughter with the rest of the audience. Who would’ve thought a contender for People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2024 tap danced and sung at nursing homes? No wonder John Krasinski took the title instead.

I’m Sorry, but This ‘Survivor’ Player Is So Overrated

Did everyone forget that it took him four tries to win?

‘Endurance’ Was Essentially The Kids’ Version Of ‘Survivor’

Actor Glen Powell on reality competition show 'Endurance'.
    Image via Discovery Kids.

Endurance was a reality competition show that aired on Discovery Kids from 2002 to 2008. In the simplest of terms, the show combined Fear Factor and Survivor, featuring teenage contestants. Twenty teams, each consisting of one boy and one girl, are pitted against each other in a series of mental and physical challenges in a remote location. In the end, only one teen team is left standing to take home the grand prize.

Powell appeared in Endurance 2, the show’s second season, filmed in Baja, Mexico. Contestants had to face the desert landscape of Baja, which is home to plenty of creepy crawlies like rattlesnakes, scorpions, and tarantulas. Temperatures also get as high as a whopping 128 degrees. Contestants not only had to deal with physical and mental exhaustion but also heat stroke and dehydration. Powell was eliminated in the first Right To Stay challenge called “Drop Out.” This challenge immediately eliminates six contestants before they even choose their teams. In the challenge, the player stands on a platform above the water while holding onto a large metal bar. If the player lowers it too far, then the platform they are standing on will fall, and they will be dangling to their fate. Powell was the second contestant eliminated, with a time of 6:11, so at least he wasn’t dead last in the competition.

To everyone’s surprise, the blockbuster actor began his career on a reality competition show. Stephen Colbert put his investigative skills to the test, pulling out all the stops to expose Powell’s short-lived time on reality TV. His first-challenge elimination proves that, although he may fly warplanes, chase twisters, and pretend to be a hitman, Glen Powell doesn’t have Endurance.

Endurance is not available to stream at this time.

In the early 2000s, actor Glen Powell took on a unique role in the world of reality television with the short-lived “Survivor: Kid Nation.” The show, which aired for only one season in 2007, followed a group of children aged 8 to 15 as they competed in various challenges and tasks to see who could outlast the rest and be crowned the ultimate survivor.

Powell served as the host and mentor to the young contestants, guiding them through the physical and mental challenges of the game. His charismatic personality and enthusiasm for the competition made him a fan favorite among viewers.

Despite its brief run, “Survivor: Kid Nation” left a lasting impact on its young participants and viewers alike. The show was praised for its positive messages of teamwork, perseverance, and friendship, and Powell’s role as host was a key factor in its success.

While Powell has since moved on to more traditional acting roles in film and television, his time on “Survivor: Kid Nation” remains a unique and memorable chapter in his career. Fans of the actor can still catch glimpses of his hosting skills in reruns of the short-lived series.

Survivor of New Orleans terror recalls ‘surreal’ aftermath of deadly attack that shattered his legs

NEW ORLEANS — Jeremi Sensky was returning to his hotel after meeting friends in the early hours on New Year’s Day when he heard a “massive noise” — the last thing he remembers before ending up facedown on the ground with his wheelchair smashed around him.

Sensky survived the fatal terror attack on Bourbon Street on Wednesday morning, where a Texas man inspired by ISIS rammed a truck into a crowd of revelers celebrating in New Orleans’ French Quarter. He spoke to NBC News from his hospital room, where he is recovering with two broken legs.

“I’m assuming I got hit by the truck, but honestly, nobody’s ever told me that, so I don’t know,” Sensky said. “But my wheelchair was completely bashed and the pieces were all over the place, so something hit me.”

For more on this story, watch “NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt” tonight at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT, or “Top Story with Tom Llamas” on NBC News Now.

According to the FBI, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, made his way to Louisiana from his home in Texas on New Year’s Eve and posted several videos to social media. Jabbar said in the videos he had originally planned to hurt his family and friends, but pivoted to a bigger attack to focus on the “war between the believers and the disbelievers.”

He drove a rented Ford F-150 onto the sidewalk into a crowd — swerving through barriers and police — before dying in a gunfight with officers. The attack killed 14 people and injured dozens of others.

Sensky was right by the Jabbar’s truck after he plowed into the crowd.

Everything happened so quickly, he said. One moment he was turning around and the next he was on the ground in the middle of the sound of gunfire coming in different directions.

“I just heard screaming and I heard gunfire,” he recalled.

He couldn’t find his phone, so Sensky began screaming for help.

“No one would come, and so I pushed myself on my back, and I saw people, and they were taking pictures from the balcony, and I was screaming out for help and people were just looking at me,” Sensky said.

A cop named Patrick eventually walked over to him and explained that many people were dead, Sensky recalled. The officer told Sensky that he “was lucky to be alive.”

“I kept asking for someone to help me and get me out of there and it took a while,” Sensky said. “I realized that it was a bad scene.”

Sensky, who was paralyzed from the waist down prior to the attack, doesn’t believe that anyone realized he couldn’t walk as they took in the chaos of the scene. Eventually, he was carried to an ambulance and taken to the hospital where he underwent surgery.

His right leg was broken in a “million pieces,” but Sensky also said it saved him.

Sensky told NBC News that the entire experience has been “surreal.” He teared up when talking about the attack, emotional in his disbelief that anyone could do such a thing.

“I love everybody. Everybody,” Sensky said. “I can’t believe that that would happen.”

Tom Llamas reported from New Orleans. Doha Madani reported from New York City.

  • Ágnes Keleti, Holocaust survivor, oldest living Olympic medal winner, dies at age 103

Ágnes Keleti, Holocaust survivor, oldest living Olympic medal winner, dies at age 103

BUDAPEST, Hungary — Ágnes Keleti, a Holocaust survivor and the oldest living Olympic medal winner, has died. She was 103.

Keleti died Thursday morning in Budapest, the Hungarian state news agency reported. She was hospitalized in critical condition with pneumonia on Dec. 25.

She won a total of 10 Olympic medals in gymnastics, including five golds, for Hungary at the 1952 Helsinki Games and the 1956 Melbourne Games. She overcame the loss of her father and several relatives in the Holocaust to become one of the most successful Jewish Olympic athletes.

“These 100 years felt to me like 60,” Keleti told The Associated Press on the eve of her 100th birthday. “I live well. And I love life. It’s great that I’m still healthy.”

Born Ágnes Klein in 1921 in Budapest, her career was interrupted by World War II and the cancellation of the 1940 and 1944 Olympics. Forced off her gymnastics team in 1941 because of her Jewish ancestry, Keleti went into hiding in the Hungarian countryside, where she survived the Holocaust by assuming a false identity and working as a maid.

Her mother and sister survived the war with the help of famed Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, but her father and other relatives perished at Auschwitz, among the more than half a million Hungarian Jews killed in Nazi death camps and by Hungarian Nazi collaborators.

Resuming her career after the war, Keleti was set to compete at the 1948 London Olympics, but a last-minute ankle injury dashed her hopes.

Four years later, she made her Olympic debut at the 1952 Helsinki Games at the age of 31, winning a gold medal in the floor exercise as well as a silver and two bronzes. In 1956, she became the most successful athlete at the Melbourne Olympics, winning four gold and two silver medals.

While she was becoming the oldest gold medalist in gymnastics history at age 35 in Melbourne, the Soviet Union invaded Hungary following an unsuccessful anti-Soviet uprising. Keleti remained in Australia and sought political asylum. She then immigrated to Israel the following year and worked as a trainer and coached the Israeli Olympic gymnastics team until the 1990s.

Ágnes Keleti, Holocaust survivor, oldest living Olympic medal winner, dies at age 103

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Ágnes Keleti, a Hungarian Olympic gymnast and Holocaust survivor, who passed away at the age of 103. Keleti’s life was a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and her story serves as a reminder of the atrocities of the Holocaust and the power of hope and perseverance.

Born in Budapest in 1921, Keleti was a promising gymnast from a young age. However, her dreams were put on hold during World War II when she was forced to go into hiding to escape the Nazis. Despite the horrors she faced during the Holocaust, Keleti survived and went on to become one of the most successful gymnasts of her time.

Keleti participated in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics, where she won four gold medals and two silver medals, making her the most successful athlete at the games. She went on to compete in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, where she won three gold medals and a silver medal, solidifying her status as a gymnastics legend.

After retiring from competitive gymnastics, Keleti went on to coach and inspire countless athletes. She was a true pioneer in the sport and her legacy will live on for generations to come.

Ágnes Keleti’s life is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and hope. She will be deeply missed but her spirit will continue to inspire us all. Rest in peace, Ágnes Keleti.
