  • To Battle ‘Woke,’ DOJ ‘Suspends’ Black, Womens History Months

In order to combat the scourge of “DEI,” the DOJ yesterday indefinitely suspended observance of events like Black History Month, Women’s History Month and other long observed (and one would imagine fairly innocuous) commemorations.

    The details are as follows.

Yesterday as part of the implementation of Trump’s anti-DEI executive order and the related anti-DEI guidance memorandum from the Office of Personal Management, the Executive Office of United States Attorneys immediately “suspend[ed] observance programs until further notice” and advised regional U.S. Attorneys Offices that “we believe it would also be prudent for the USAOs to suspend all observance events at this time.”

For what it’s worth, Black History Month isn’t something that BLM activists came up with. President Gerald Ford recognized February in 1976 and Congress passed a law designating February as National Black History Month in 1986.

The news was contained in a circular email sent to all U.S. Attorney’s Offices and shared with TPM.

In a shocking move that has sparked outrage and disbelief, the Department of Justice has announced the suspension of Black History Month and Women’s History Month in an effort to combat what they refer to as the “woke” agenda.

The decision, which was made public in a memo sent out to all employees, states that the recognition and celebration of these important cultural and historical milestones are no longer in line with the department’s values. Instead, the DOJ will be focusing on promoting a more “neutral” and “unbiased” approach to diversity and inclusion.

Critics have condemned the move as a blatant attempt to erase the contributions and struggles of Black and women activists throughout history. Many have pointed out that Black History Month and Women’s History Month are crucial opportunities to educate and raise awareness about the ongoing fight for equality and justice.

The decision has sparked widespread backlash on social media, with many calling for the immediate reinstatement of these important observances. Some have even launched online campaigns and petitions to protest the DOJ’s decision.

As we continue to navigate through a tumultuous political and social climate, it is vital that we stand in solidarity with marginalized communities and amplify their voices. The attempt to erase Black History Month and Women’s History Month only serves to further marginalize these communities and reinforce systemic inequalities.

It is up to us to resist and fight back against such harmful and regressive actions. Let us continue to celebrate and honor the legacies of Black and women activists, both past and present, and work towards a more inclusive and just society for all. #BlackHistoryMonth #WomensHistoryMonth #JusticeForAll

  • Palestinian Authority temporarily suspends broadcast of Qatar’s Al Jazeera TV

Palestinian Authority temporarily suspends broadcast of Qatar’s Al Jazeera TV

The Palestinian Authority temporarily halted operations of Qatar’s Al Jazeera television in the territory including its broadcasts, citing the network’s dissemination of “inciting material,” the Palestinian news agency WAFA said on Wednesday.

The culture, interior and communications ministers made the decision jointly because the channel broadcast material that was “deceiving and stirring strife,” WAFA said without providing details on the subject matter.

The order said the decision was temporary but did not specify an end date.

The Palestinian Authority criticized Al Jazeera last week over its coverage of the weeks-long standoff between Palestinian security forces and militant fighters in the Jenin camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Al Jazeera denounced Wednesday’s decision as “an attempt to discourage it from reporting spiraling events in the occupied territories,” according to a statement.

It called on the Palestinian Authority to rescind the decision and allow its journalists to report freely from the West Bank without intimidation.

The decision was not expected to be implemented in Hamas-run Gaza where the Palestinian Authority does not exercise power.

Fatah, the faction that controls the Palestinian Authority, said the broadcaster was sowing division in “our Arab homeland in general and in Palestine in particular”. It encouraged Palestinians not to cooperate with the network.

The Israeli military in September raided Al Jazeera’s bureau in the West Bank city of Ramallah and ordered it shut.

Israel in May issued an order barring the channel from operating and broadcasting in the country, saying it posed a threat to Israeli security. A court subsequently upheld the ban.

The Palestinian Authority has announced that it will temporarily suspend the broadcast of Qatar’s Al Jazeera TV in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The decision comes amidst growing tensions between the Palestinian Authority and Qatar, with the former accusing the latter of interfering in Palestinian internal affairs.

The Palestinian Authority’s Minister of Information, Nabil Abu Rudeineh, stated that the decision to suspend Al Jazeera’s broadcast was made in order to protect Palestinian national security and stability. He also accused the news outlet of promoting a biased and unbalanced narrative that undermines the Palestinian cause.

Al Jazeera has been known for its critical coverage of the Palestinian Authority and its policies, leading to strained relations between the two parties. The decision to suspend the broadcast of Al Jazeera in the Palestinian territories is likely to further escalate tensions between the two sides.

It remains to be seen how long the suspension will last and what impact it will have on the media landscape in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. In the meantime, the Palestinian Authority has urged Palestinian media outlets to adhere to professional standards and avoid promoting divisive narratives that could harm the Palestinian national interest.

Mayday holding free online concert on New Year’s Eve

Taiwanese rock giant Mayday are ending 2024, the 25th anniversary of their debut album, with a bang by holding a free online concert on New Year’s Eve.

The quintet — Monster, Ashin, Stone, Masa and Ming — posted on social media about their Fly to 2025 show with a poem inviting their audience to “open the multiverse of Mayday”.

They will be live at 10.25pm (same time as Singapore) on Dec 31, broadcasting on the YouTube channel of their label B’in Music.

Fans looking to synchronise their lightsticks at home could also download the B’in Music Concert app.

The concert will also be shown at three cinemas, in Taipei, Taichung and Kaohsiung, and free tickets are available today (Dec 28) from noon.

    Zhao Lusi suspends all work

Chinese actress Zhao Lusi had fans worried recently when a photo allegedly of her at the accident and emergency (A&E) department of a hospital made its rounds on social media.

The woman in the photo is in a wheelchair with her head leaning on her shoulder. Though she had a face mask and cap on, netizens claimed her to be Lusi, 26.

Her Weibo account was also shut down without explanation.

Yesterday, her studio posted on Weibo that she had suddenly felt unwell on Dec 18 and went to the hospital for examination and treatment as soon as possible.

“She is currently following the doctor’s advice for treatment and recuperation,” it read.

The post further added that Lusi’s management was going to take her health into primary consideration and suspend all further projects while she recovered.

Aaron Kwok falls into stage trapdoor

Stage trapdoors seem to be intent on eating Hong Kong’s Heavenly Kings this year.

Andy Lau injured his thumb back in September after stepping into one and taking a tumble, and yesterday (Dec 27), it was Aaron Kwok’s turn on the first night of his Iconic World Tour in Taiwan.

Videos circulating on social media show the singer-actor making a heart gesture to his audience after singing his hit song Fen Xiang Ai. He steps back, presumably to get onto the platform that will lower him below the stage, but falls right through.

The 59-year-old took to social media to tell fans that he was okay and that he had fallen after missing a step.

“My microphone hit a steel plate at the edge of the stage and there was a loud noise. The newly-customised mic was slightly scratched but I wasn’t hurt at all,” he reassured.

He added that he had climbed back onto the stage “with ease” and continued singing.

Aaron performs for two more nights in Taipei.

The NBA acted quickly in issuing penalties to the players involved in a brawl during Friday night’s game between the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns.

Dallas’ Naji Marshall has been suspended for four games without pay, while Phoenix’s Jusuf Nurkić received a three-game penalty (also without pay) for their involvement in the scuffle, NBA head of basketball operations Joe Dumars announced in a statement.

Additionally, the Mavericks’ P.J. Washington was suspended one game for “escalating the on-court altercation.”

Though Marshall was likely to receive the longer suspension since he threw a punch, the NBA’s statement explained that the Mavericks forward attempted to confront Nurkić again after their ejections outside the teams’ locker rooms.

The melee occurred during the third quarter when Nurkić elbowed Dallas center Daniel Gafford in the jaw, resulting in an offensive foul. Nurkić then walked down the court, but turned back in response to something Marshall said.

As Marshall put his hands on Nurkić’s chest to keep him at a distance, the Suns’ big man smacked Marshall in the head. The Mavericks forward responded by punching Nurkić with his right hand.

Marshall, Nurkić and Washington were each ejected from the game, which eventually ended in a 98–89 Mavericks victory.

As the NBA explained, Marshall received the longer suspension because he threw a punch and tried to resume hostilities. Yet his adding an image of the moment to the banner of his X account soon after the incident demonstrated that he had no remorse for his actions. (Marshall has since changed the banner image.)

Naji Marshall posted a photo of him punching Jusef Nurkic as a banner image on his X account after their confrontation on Dec. 27, 2024Naji Marshall posted a photo of him punching Jusef Nurkic as a banner image on his X account after their confrontation on Dec. 27, 2024

Marshall finished with four points, while Washington compiled seven. Nurkić scored five points before being ejected.

All three players will begin serving their suspensions Saturday. The Mavericks (20–11) continue their four-game road trip at the Portland Trail Blazers with Luka Dončić (calf strain) and Dereck Lively II (hip contusion) also out of the lineup due to injuries. The Suns (15–15) visit the Golden State Warriors.

The NBA has announced suspensions for Dallas Mavericks’ Naji Marshall and Phoenix Suns’ Jusuf Nurkić following their involvement in a heated altercation during a recent game. Marshall has been suspended for 4 games, while Nurkić will sit out for 3 games.

The incident occurred in the third quarter of the game between the Mavericks and Suns, when Marshall and Nurkić got into a physical confrontation after a hard foul. Both players had to be separated by teammates and officials, and the incident quickly escalated into a full-blown brawl.

After reviewing the footage and conducting interviews with the players and officials involved, the NBA determined that both Marshall and Nurkić had violated the league’s rules on unsportsmanlike conduct and physical altercations. As a result, they have been handed suspensions as a deterrent against future incidents.

The suspensions will be effective immediately, meaning Marshall and Nurkić will miss the upcoming games for their respective teams. The Mavericks and Suns will have to make adjustments to their lineups in the absence of these key players, as they aim to maintain their positions in the competitive Western Conference standings.

Both players have issued statements expressing regret for their actions and accepting the consequences of their behavior. They have apologized to their teammates, coaches, and fans for their actions, and have pledged to learn from this experience and conduct themselves better in the future.

The NBA has reiterated its commitment to promoting a safe and respectful playing environment for all players, coaches, and officials. Incidents like this brawl will not be tolerated, and the league will continue to enforce strict penalties to deter such behavior in the future.

NBA suspends three players involved in altercation between Mavericks and Suns

    CNN
     —

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has suspended three players who were involved in an altercation between the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns on Friday.

Mavericks forward Naji Marshall has been suspended four games without pay and Suns center Jusuf Nurkić has been suspended three games without pay for their “involvement in an on-court altercation,” Joe Dumars, executive vice president, head of basketball operations announced on Saturday.

Mavericks forward PJ Washington was also suspended one game without pay for “escalating the on-court altercation.”

In the third quarter of Dallas’ 98-89 win over Phoenix at the Footprint Center, Nurkić committed an offensive foul which led to a scuffle between him and Marshall.

The 30-year-old Nurkić swung his arm at Marshall which led to Marshall throwing a punch at Nurkić.

As officials and players of both teams tried to de-escalate the situation, Washington pushed Nurkić to the floor.

Nurkić, Marshall and Washington were all assessed technical fouls and ejected from the game.

According to the league, the altercation did not end on the court.

Marshall “attempted to further engage Nurkić in a hostile manner in the corridor outside the locker rooms.”

Suns head coach Mike Budenholzer criticized Nurkić for his role in the situation.

“I think that level of altercation is not good for our team,” Budenholzer said to reporters after the game. “It’s not good for anybody individually, it’s not good for our league. I don’t know all the details of what got it to that point.”

Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd had a different take on the altercation.

“Protecting each other, that’s what that was. Teammates, emotions can get high,” Kidd said. “For our guys to protect one another, we talk about it, it was displayed tonight. It was good to see those guys protect each other. Now we move on, gotta get ready for Portland.”

Marshall will begin serving his four-game suspension and Washington will serve his one-game suspension on Saturday when the Mavericks visit the Portland Trail Blazers.

Nurkić will also begin serving his suspension Saturday when the Suns visit the Golden State Warriors.

The NBA has announced the suspension of three players following the altercation between the Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns during their recent game. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter when tensions boiled over and a scuffle ensued on the court.

Mavericks’ forward Kristaps Porzingis has been suspended for two games for his role in escalating the altercation. Suns’ center Deandre Ayton has also been suspended for two games for his involvement in the incident. Additionally, Mavericks’ forward Dorian Finney-Smith has been suspended for one game for his actions during the altercation.

The NBA has made it clear that any behavior that threatens the safety of players, coaches, or officials will not be tolerated. The league is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful environment for all involved in the game of basketball.

Both teams have stated that they will accept the league’s decision and will work to ensure that incidents like this do not happen again in the future. The players involved have also expressed regret for their actions and have apologized for any harm caused.

The NBA continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of all individuals involved in the game, and will take swift and appropriate action to address any incidents of misconduct.
