  • Chloe Kim and Maddie Mastro Make History in Switzerland

It’s great to watch one rider overcome adversity. It’s even better when two of them do so to land on the podium.

U.S. Snowboarding teammates Chloe Kim and Maddie Mastro both missed the podium at the U.S. Grand Prix’s halfpipe contest in December. Mastro was forced to withdraw from the contest after a hard landing led to an injury. Kim fell at the end of her run, which cost her the lead, and she finished in fourth.

Kim and Mastro regrouped to finish in first and second places, respectively, in Laax, Switzerland. They made some history along the way.

Both Kim and Mastro became the first women to land a double cork 1080 in a competition. Kim’s cab double helped her earn a 96.50 on her way to gold, and Mastro landed a frontside double to join Kim in the record books.

It was Kim’s fifth world cup win of her career, and her first win since the 2023 X Games, where she became the first woman to land a 1260 in a competition.

“I really wanted to show you guys my cab double, and I’m so happy I was able to put it down,” Kim said. “It’s rewarding to just ride for fun.”

It’s the first time American women have claimed the top two spots on a World Cup podium since the same duo did it in 2018 at the U.S. Grand Prix. For Mastro, it was a tremendous mental boost, following the slam at Copper Mountain.

“Having confidence in this half pipe, it’s a must. You have to be confident when you drop into this halfpipe. So it was good that I got to start to knock off that rust, per se, and build my confidence back up after that slam in Copper,” Mastro said to Snowboarder. “Then it just kind of just snowballed from there, and I was able to land on my feet in finals and ended up back on the podium, which was overall really great for my confidence.”

South Korean rider Choi Gaon finished in third place with a 93.25.

On the men’s side of things, Australian Scotty James took home a win thanks to a big second run. His cab triple cork 1440 helped set the tone, and he finished the run with a switch backside 1260 on his way to a score of 95.75.

Japan’s Ruka Hirano finished in second place with a 93.75, and Ayumu Hirano came in third with a score of 87.

“I knew I had to put my best foot forward and throw everything at these guys,” James said to Olympics.com. “I fortunately came away with the win.”

In the slopestyle contests, British phenom Mia Brookes won with an 84.86 in her first run that outlasted fellow heavy hitters Zoi Sadowski-Synnott and Kokomo Murase, who rounded out the podium with respective scores of 75.36 and 71.15.

It’s a big win for the youngster, who remains hot after dominating the podium in Big Air contests so far this year.

Red Gerard finished in second place on the men’s side, just barely getting nudged out of first place by Canadian Cameron Spalding with his score of 86.63. German Noah Vicktor’s score of 83.72 was enough to grab the final podium spot.

Chloe Kim and Maddie Mastro Make History in Switzerland

Chloe Kim and Maddie Mastro have made history in Switzerland by becoming the first female snowboarders to successfully land a double cork 1080 in competition.

The two talented athletes made their mark at the Laax Open, one of the most prestigious snowboarding events in the world. Kim, who is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, and Mastro, who is a rising star in the sport, wowed the crowd with their incredible skill and determination.

Their groundbreaking feat not only showcases their individual talents but also highlights the growing presence of female athletes in the male-dominated world of snowboarding. Kim and Mastro’s success is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for the sport.

Congratulations to Chloe Kim and Maddie Mastro on their historic achievement in Switzerland! We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next in their snowboarding careers.

  • World Economic Forum Returns to Davos, Switzerland, for the 55th Time

The Swiss town of Davos each year hosts the WEF. | Image: investorsinproperty.com

The World Economic Forum is back in the Swiss Alps for its 55th year from January 20 to 24, 2025. Every year for over half a century, the world’s political and industrial elite descend on the small alpine village of Davos and turn the ski resort into the schmooze-fest of the movers and shakers in the world’s global economy. Heralded as ‘The place where leaders meet,’ the ski village hosts around 2,500 influential guests through a week of panels, presentations, and invite-only break-out sessions. This year, the program includes more than 300 sessions (200 of which are livestreamed to a global audience) aimed at accelerating progress and addressing global challenges.

This year, between 200-300 internationally protected persons are in attendance, including approximately 60 heads of state and government, ministers, and representatives from international organizations. Many of these high-profile attendees will arrive by private jet into Samedan airport near St. Moritz. In addition, around 1,600 business leaders from over 130 countries are expected to also attend, and Zurich airport is anticipating an additional 1,000 flights during this period (compared to approximately 750 flights into Zurich per day). While a definite guest list for 2025 has not been confirmed for security reasons, it is anticipated that, amonst others, Javier Milei (President of Argentina), Ursula von der Leyen (President of the European Commission), Ding Xuexiang (Deputy Prime Minister of China), Ilham Aliyev (President of Azerbaidzhan), Mostafa Madbouli (Prime Minister of Egypt), Isaac Herzog (President of Israel), Tharman Shanmugaratnam (President of Singapore), and Volodymyr Zelensky (President of Ukraine) will attend. U.S. President Donald Trump will attend the conference via video link.

This year’s WEF will be held from January 20-24. | Image: WEF

What makes Davos so attractive for these most influential attendees is that aside from the guaranteed discretion in Switzerland, Davos can only be reached by one road, making it easy to safeguard against terrorist attacks or violent left-wing protests. Each year, the Swiss Army descends on the two entry points on either side of the valley and monitors everyone who enters with Swiss precision. There are checkpoints at key access roads and bridges as well as at Samedan airport near St. Moritz, where many attendants fly in on private jets (it is not a commercial airport). Swiss authorities coordinate a comprehensive security plan, involving up to 5,000 armed forces personnel and inter-cantonal police collaboration. Measures include restricted airspace, controlled helicopter traffic, and strict entry checkpoints. Freedom of opinion and peaceful demonstrations are encouraged, but unauthorized protests are dealt with firmly. Tourism in Davos is generally unaffected during the WEF, though personal, vehicle, and baggage checks at access points may cause delays.

Samedan airport is the closest private airport to Davos and can be closely monitored by the military. | Image: Julia Schneemann

The event’s security costs, estimated at CHF 9 million annually, are shared under a three-tier finance model involving the WEF Foundation, the federal government, the Canton of Graubünden, and the commune of Davos.

Locals in Davos, however, are less impressed each year by the circus descending on their village. Access to basic infrastructure becomes difficult or at times impossible, as certain areas and roads are blocked off for the week, including around the Congress Center / Kongress Hotel / Hotel Hilton Garden Inn; the AlpenGold and Belvédère hotels; the ice rink and the Lago heliport incl. the lake car park and meadow. Prices explode to a manifold of their usually already high rates. A five-night stay in one of Davos’ nicer hotels blows out to CHF 25,000 (USD 29,000), and even basic hotels charge CHF 1,000 (USD 1,160) per night. Luxury chalets in Davos also quintuple their prices and are known to fetch between CHF 500,000 and CHF 1 million for the week. According to Swiss newspaper Blick, there are even reports of landlords forcing out tenants for the WEF week to earn a few extra thousand franks for the week.

Regardless of what locals or critics might think of the WEF, it does not appear the world’s economic elite has any plans of abandoning its annual get-together despite an estimated cost of $40,000 per delegate. While there is no proven direct economic value of a delegate’s attendance for a company, absence from the prestigious annual event might send a troubling message about a company’s economic position or its significance on the global stage.

The World Economic Forum Returns to Davos, Switzerland, for the 55th Time

The annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) is set to take place once again in the picturesque town of Davos, Switzerland. This year marks the 55th time that global leaders, business executives, and thought leaders will come together to discuss the most pressing economic and societal issues facing the world today.

The theme for this year’s forum is “The Great Reset,” which focuses on the need for a more sustainable, inclusive, and resilient post-pandemic world. With the COVID-19 pandemic still affecting economies and societies around the globe, there is a sense of urgency to address the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

The forum will feature a series of high-level discussions, panels, and workshops on topics such as climate change, digital transformation, inequality, and global health. Participants can expect to hear from prominent speakers, including government officials, CEOs, academics, and activists, who will share their insights and solutions to the world’s most pressing issues.

As the world looks towards recovery and rebuilding in the wake of the pandemic, the World Economic Forum serves as a crucial platform for fostering collaboration, innovation, and action. Stay tuned for updates and highlights from this year’s forum as global leaders come together to shape a better future for all.

  • World Junior Championship roundup: U.S. tops Switzerland to reach semifinals

World Junior Championship roundup: U.S. tops Switzerland to reach semifinals

    Quarterfinal round results

United States 7, Switzerland 2 — James Hagens (2025 NHL Draft eligible) and Ryan Leonard (Washington Capitals) each scored two goals at Canadian Tire Centre to help the United States advance to the semifinals.

“It felt great especially since this is a win-or-go-home game, so it was special and really fun,” Hagens said.

Gabe Perreault (New York Rangers) had three assists, Zeev Buium (Minnesota Wild) had a goal and an assist, and Brodie Ziemer (Buffalo Sabres) and Oliver Moore (Chicago Blackhawks) each had two assists for the United States. Hampton Slukynsky (Los Angeles Kings) made 17 saves in his second start of the tournament.

The U.S. took a 4-1 lead in the first period.

“I think if you look at the way Switzerland’s been playing and the teams they’ve been playing against (in the Group B pool), they were being outshot in the first period and even into the second by a pretty good margin,” said Leonard, the U.S. captain. “We just wanted to focus on the first 5-10 minutes, and then we let our game take over.”

The United States, the defending champion, clinched a semifinal berth for the eighth time in 10 years. It will play Saturday against an opponent to be determined.

Brandon Svoboda (San Jose Sharks), Hagens and Leonard scored in the opening 11:35 for a 3-0 lead to chase Switzerland goalie Christian Kirsch (Sharks), who allowed three goals on 10 shots. Elijah Neuenschwander (2025 draft eligible) replaced him and allowed four goals on 21 shots.

“It’s always fun when you’re getting the bounces and they’re going in,” Perreault said. “I thought we played well, had a lot of chances, and hopefully keep going on the last couple games.”

Nils Rhyn (2025 draft eligible) pulled Switzerland within 3-1 at 15:04, scoring a short-handed goal on a slap shot from the point, before Danny Nelson (New York Islanders) scored on a deflection from the slot for a 4-1 lead at 16:44.

“We played as team in the third period; it was very good team effort,” Rhyn said. “In the first and second, the goals were coming a little bit too fast through our own mistakes.”

Buium pushed it to 5-1 at 7:45 of the second period with a power-play goal, knocking in a shot from the slot off a pass from Perreault.

“Zeev’s playing and taking what’s given and what’s in front of him, and that’s nice to see,” U.S. coach David Carle said. “He’s a very talented player who can do things 1-on-1 in space, but we’re looking more like a collective unit, which is a good thing for us.”

Hagens scored his second of the game for a 6-1 lead at 15:03 off a give-and-go with Perreault. Leonard then made it 7-1 with a power-play goal at 16:23. The Boston College line of Leonard, Hagens and Perreault combined for four goals and seven points.

“We had a lot of chances and when we missed a couple, we don’t get frustrated and stuck with it,” Hagens said. “We’ve had a long year together (at Boston College) and being here and being able to come from school, it’s been awesome. We know if we keep sticking to it, it’ll work out.”

Andro Kaderli (2025 draft eligible) scored on a rebound from the slot for Switzerland at 6:53 of the third period for the 7-2 final.

The United States is undefeated against Switzerland in 27 games at the World Juniors (25 wins, two ties). The U.S. is 15-9 in the quarterfinals.

The U.S. World Junior team continued their impressive run at the 2022 World Junior Championship, defeating Switzerland 5-2 in the quarterfinals to advance to the semifinals.

The Americans got off to a strong start, scoring two quick goals in the first period to take a 2-0 lead. Switzerland fought back in the second period, cutting the deficit to 2-1, but the U.S. responded with two more goals to extend their lead to 4-1 heading into the third period.

Switzerland managed to score another goal in the third period, but the U.S. sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the final minutes of the game.

The U.S. will now face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Sweden and Finland in the semifinals. With their strong performance against Switzerland, the Americans are looking like serious contenders for the gold medal at this year’s World Junior Championship.

Stay tuned for more updates on the U.S. World Junior team’s quest for gold!

US routs Switzerland, makes world junior hockey semifinals

OTTAWA, Ontario — Boston College teammates James Hagens and Ryan Leonard each scored twice, and the defending champion United States routed Switzerland 7-2 on Thursday in the world junior hockey quarterfinals.

Boston University’s Brandon Svoboda, Notre Dame’s Danny Nelson and Denver’s Zeev Buium also scored for the Group A champion U.S.

“I thought we played a good back and forth game with them, got pucks behind them and went to work,” Svoboda said. “We’re a fast team, and when we play like that, we’re hard to beat. We’re watching video every day, and if we can keep improving little things then we’ll continue to be successful.”

Hampton Slukynsky of Western Michigan made 17 saves, and BC’s Gabe Perreault had three assists.

“Overall, I thought we were ready to play and did what we needed to do against a good opponent in Switzerland,” U.S. coach David Carle of Denver said. “We’ll get ready now for the semifinals and look forward to the challenge in front of us.”

Nils Rhyn and Andro Kaderli scored for Switzerland.

Earlier, Group B winner Sweden beat Latvia 3-2. David Edstrom, Zeb Forsfjall and Anton Wahlberg scored for Sweden, and Melker Thelin made 11 saves. Eriks Mateiko scored twice for Latvia, and Linards Feldbergs stopped 47 shots.

In late games, Finland faced Slovakia, and Canada met Czechia.

In the relegation game, Maxim Schafer scored twice to help Germany beat Kazakhstan 4-3. Germany secured a spot next year in the tournament, while Kazakhstan was demoted to the Division I Group A tournament.

In an impressive display of skill and determination, the US junior hockey team dominated Switzerland in a 5-1 victory to advance to the semifinals of the world junior hockey championship.

The American team showed their strength early on, with goals from top scorers leading the charge. Their offense was relentless, putting pressure on the Swiss defense and creating numerous scoring opportunities.

The US defense was equally impressive, shutting down the Swiss offense and limiting their chances to score. Goalie, [insert name], was stellar between the pipes, making key saves to keep the Swiss at bay.

With this victory, the US team has secured a spot in the semifinals and will face off against a tough opponent in the next round. Fans are buzzing with excitement as they anticipate the team’s continued success in the tournament.

Congratulations to the US junior hockey team on their impressive win and best of luck in the semifinals! #USAHockey #WorldJuniors

    Who: USA vs Switzerland

What: 2025 World Juniors Quarterfinal #2

    When: 2:30pm ET

Where: Canadian Tire Centre // NHL Network

    ———————————————————————————–

The United States men’s national junior ice hockey team has been playing at the World Juniors since 1974. Not sure how good at math most of you are, but that is now 50 years of WJC tournaments. And in those 50 years, they have never won back-to-back gold medals.

    2004. 2010. 2013. 2017. 2021. 2024.

There has always been a gap between golds for the US. But this year they have a chance to dominate the world for a two year stretch like they’ve never done before.

They are already on a strong path towards achieving just that. They took the top seed out of the Group A bracket after pumping the Canadians 4-1 on New Years Eve. Sure, they dropped an overtime loss to the Finns during group play. But they took care of business, and have set themselves up with the clearest path back to the gold medal game.

Today they’ll have Switzerland in their way. The Swiss have always been a pesky team to play against. They’re 1-3 in this tournament so far, but they’ve had a couple tight ones against Slovakia and Sweden. So it’s not like this is some throwaway game up in Rochester. But Nico Hischier ain’t walking through that door. This game is all about the boys getting hot at the right time. Get the BC line going. Get the checking lines going. Get Trey Augustine to really settle into his game. A win is a win at the end of the day, but it would be great for this one to be convincing heading into the semis.

So with that in mind, let’s fire up the live blog. I’ll be back in here updating the blog throughout the game, so keep hitting that refresh button between periods.

Excessive snowfall in Switzerland caps exceptional year in weather

    Snow in Switzerland

In the Alps, fresh snowfall of 70 to 90 centimetres fell in the week before Christmas.

    Keystone / Gaetan Bally

The year 2024 ended with changing weather in Switzerland. Two periods of precipitation at the beginning and end of December brought above-average amounts of precipitation, especially in the northern slopes of the Alps and parts of the Jura.

North of the Alps and in the Alps, precipitation fell often from December 2 to 9, with mostly mild conditions at low altitudes, MeteoSwiss reported on Monday. After that, there was plenty of sunshine due to a strong area of high pressure. The air pressure was unusually high in some regions. According to MeteoSwiss, one of the ten highest values for the month of December was recorded at over 30 measurement locations.

On the southern side of the Alps, there were two very sunny periods from December 1 to 6 and from December 11 to 16. There was no precipitation in some places in the south until December 18.

    Above-average amounts of snow

On December 22, the weather turned stormy, said MeteoSwiss. In the Alps, fresh snowfall of 70 to 90 centimetres fell regionally in the week before Christmas. Locally, snowcover even reached over 110cm. On the Jura mountains, the amount of fresh snow reached 50-60cm in some areas. The Gotthard region, the higher regions of canton Valais, parts of the Bernese Oberland and the Jura mountains in particular saw above-average amounts of snow around Christmas.

At the end of December, there was high fog north of the Alps, which did not dissipate from December 27 to 30.

Overall, Switzerland experienced an extremely warm year. It had the mildest winter on record and some very wet months. The average annual temperature in 2024 across the country was 1.4 degrees above the 1991 standard from 2020.

Switzerland has experienced an exceptional year in weather, with excessive snowfall capping off a winter season like no other. The country has been blanketed in snow, with some regions reporting record-breaking amounts of precipitation.
