INSIDE THE MATCHUP – CAL vs. SYRACUSE

    • Series record: Syracuse leads, 3-1
    • Cal and Syracuse clashed four times in a six-season span between 2009-14, each time in a neutral setting.
    • The Bears lost their first three meetings with the Orange, including a 66-60 defeat in the 2013 NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in San Jose, before winning the most recent meeting 73-59 on Nov. 20, 2014, in the 2K Classic at Madison Square Garden in New York.
    • Syracuse (9-12, 3-7 ACC) has lost three straight games and is 1-8 away from home (1-5 in true road games) this season.

    STARTING FIVE
    1. No Place Like Home
The Golden Bears (11-10, 4-6 ACC) are back in Haas Pavilion for three straight ACC home games starting Saturday against Syracuse. It’s a pivotal stretch for Cal, which is 9-3 inside Haas this season and 3-1 in its past four conference home games, including a sweep of Florida State and Miami last week. Cal is 15-5 at home since the start of January 2024 and got hot down the stretch last season, winning six of its final eight home games.

    2. Strength In Numbers
The Bears have had to battle through injuries to key players of late, highlighted by leading scorer Andrej Stojakovic’s three-game absence due to a hip injury and an illness. Stojakovic (18.9 points per game – third in the ACC) was joined by starting center Mady Sissoko (concussion protocol) on the injury report Wednesday at SMU; it was Sissoko’s first missed game of the season and followed a torrid stretch in which he averaged 9.8 points on 75% shooting, 9.1 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game in six contests between Jan. 8-25.

Cal is 2-1 in three games without Stojakovic and has had multiple players step up on the offensive end, highlighted by Jeremiah Wilkinson (21.3 PPG in first three career starts), DJ Campbell (22-point effort vs. Miami) and Rytis Petraitis (season-high 18 points at SMU). The Bears have also averaged 13.3 assists per game in that three-game span, nearly three more than their season average (10.6 APG).

    3. Rising Star
Freshman guard Jeremiah Wilkinson was named ACC Co-Rookie of the Week for the second time this season on Monday after averaging 24.0 PPG in games against the Seminoles and Hurricanes last week. Wilkinson, who has started the last three games in Stojakovic’s absence, added a 16-point effort at SMU on Wednesday, bumping his season scoring average to 13.1 PPG, tied for the fourth best among ACC freshmen. The left-hander has scored double figures in 15 of the past 17 games.

    4. All Grit
Rytis Petraitis has won over the Golden Bear fan base with a do-it-all style of play, and he’s made the Bears a more dynamic team as a result. While much of Petraitis’ game doesn’t show up in the box score, he’s made his presence felt in ACC play with two double-doubles in the past three games – 18 points, 10 rebounds at SMU; 12 points, 13 rebounds (eight offensive) vs. Florida State – a 3.17 assist-to-turnover ratio (19 to 6) and 3.1 offensive rebounds per game.

    5. Attack The Rim
The Bears are scoring more than 67% of their points in the paint or at the free throw line this season, signaling an emphasis on getting to the rim. Cal leads the ACC (24th nationally) with 17.3 free throws made per game and has scored 40-plus paint points five times, including in back-to-back games last week against Florida State and Miami.

    UP NEXT
Cal’s home stand continues with a rematch against NC State on Wednesday. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. PT in Haas Pavilion.

    Final: Syracuse 75, California 66

Syracuse snaps a three-game losing streak by putting together one of its most complete outings of the season in a win at California on Saturday night at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, California.

After leading by 13 points late in regulation, Cal cut the margin to 67-61 with a little more than a minute remaining, forcing the Orange to earn the win at the free throw line down the stretch.

The Orange weathered a couple of big Cal scoring runs in the second half to rebuild a double-digit lead and now catches a red-eye flight home on Sunday morning for a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night in the JMA Wireless Dome.

The Orange jumped out to a 9-0 lead to start the game and put the defensive clamps on Cal by bringing out a 2-3 zone. The defensive move helped limit Cal to less than 20% shooting from the floor in the first half and less than 30% for the game. Syracuse led by as many as 18 points about midway through the second half.

    Second half

    3:17 remaining: Syracuse 62, California 52

If the result holds, Syracuse will head home with a 10-12 record to face the lone unbeaten team in ACC play that is coming off a dominant 17-point victory against its arch rival (Duke led North Carolina by 30 points on Saturday).

FYI: The Blue Devils have not lost since before Thanksgiving.

Blacksher rattles home a 3, and the Bears are on an 11-0 run over the last 4-plus minutes.

Cal hanging around and is in the bonus, but the Bears commit a bad turnover on a lazy, misguided lob pass that Lampkin easily intercepts.

    7:37 remaining: Syracuse 58, California 46

Good contested shot by McLeod at the rim to turn away Cal. The 7-foot-4 center has two points, three rebounds and a block in nine minutes of action.

Cal is still shooting just 26% from the floor for the game and is 4-for-25 from 3. The Orange is shooting 50% from the field and 7-for-12 (58%) from 3.

    11:54 remaining: Syracuse 56, California 39

Syracuse turns it over out of the under-16 TV timeout. Starling curls off a screen and hits a short jumper from the elbow.

The Orange answers with a burst of a 7-0 run, including a 3 by Carlos to push the lead back to 14.

Starling then uses a screen up top by Lampkin to get downhill and finishes at the rim.

Starling has a team high 14 points but heads to the bench with just more than 12 minutes remaining in the second half.

Carlos gets the break going off a long missed 3 and finishes through contact for a three-point play.

    15:43 remaining: Syracuse 45, California 36

Elijah Moore picks up where he left off in the first half with an early 3 before Cal rattles off seven straight points punctuated by a thunderous dunk in transition.

Jyare Davis with a sloppy entry pass to Lampkin and turns it over out of a timeout. It turns into an and-one opportunity for Cal at the other end. The Bears have trimmed the lead to 10 and have as many field goals in the first three minutes of the second half as they did in the first 20 minutes of the game.

Wilkinson hits a step-back 3 over Moore and all you can do is tip your cap to the shot-making ability of the freshman.

Starling answers with a much-needed bucket to snap a 10-0 Cal run.

    Halftime: Syracuse 40, California 23

Syracuse has opened up a 17-point halftime lead behind an active, versatile defense, holding Cal to less than 20% shooting from the field.

Nine of the 10 Orange men who have checked into the game have scored, with JJ Starling and Lucas Taylor pacing the Orange with seven points apiece. Elijah Moore (six points) and Jyare Davis (six points; five rebounds) also aided the Orange effort in the first half.

Syracuse has turned to its 2-3 zone at moments in the first half, evening subbing in seldom-used backup center Naheem McLeod for four first-half minutes.

The zone and SU’s man-to-man defense has completely flummoxed Cal, holding the Bears to 4-for-23 shooting, including 2-for-14 from 3.

    First half

Good second-effort by Davis to follow his miss off the glass and finish underneath.

Lampkin then sticks back a miss by Majstorovic.

Cal has 13 of its 23 points at the free throw line and it’s shooting sub-20% from the field.

Starling, who had missed his last six shots, ends the half with a 3.

    3:46 remaining: Syracuse 33, California 17

Cal’s 7:15 field goal drought is, mercifully, over.

Taylor hits a 3 at the other end. Cal is 1-for-11 from beyond the arc. Taylor looks toward Moore on a back-door cut but Moore doesn’t appear to look for the pass and it’s a turnover for the Orange.

Davis absorbs contact down low for a lay-in. Then, off a turnover, Lampkin kicks it out to Moore for a corner 3 to open up a 14-point lead.

Syracuse now has its largest lead of the game off a short hook in the paint by Lampkin.

    7:52 remaining: Syracuse 23, California 10

McLeod corrals a catch and finishes in the paint. Then, Carlos picks up his dribble in the lane but uses some crafty footwork to get a shot up and draw a foul. Syracuse leads, 18-9 as Cal has started 2-for-11 from the field.

Bell, who’s shooting 50% over his last eight games (17-for-34), scores five straight points, to open up a double-digit lead. The junior grew up about 30 minutes outside Berkeley.

The Bears are now 2-for-13 from the field and settling for a bunch of bad shots.

    11:54 remaining: Syracuse 14, California 9

Davis is working hard on the glass to keep a possession alive and earns a trip to the free throw line. The Orange enters the game next-to-last in the 18-team league in free throw shooting and 3-point shooting.

Jovan Blacksher, an Oakland native who transferred in from Grand Canyon, hits two free throws, and the Orange has an 11-4 lead five minutes into the game.

Chris Bell, Jaquan Carlos, Petar Majstorovic and Kyle Cuffe Jr. await at the scorer’s table and will check in with 13:01 remaining in the half.

Carlos, coming off a perfect shooting performance at Stanford, hits the side of the backboard on his first perimeter shot of the evening.

Naheem McLeod with some rare minutes here in the first half.

Cal is 2-for-10 from the field, while the Orange is 5-for-14.

    15:48 remaining: Syracuse 9, California 2

Elijah Moore hits a 3 to open up a 9-0 start before freshman Jeremiah Wilkinson hits a midrange jumper.

Moore tries an extra pass to Jyare Davis underneath the basket instead of taking it up off the feed from Lampkin and turns it over.

    17:34 remaining: Syracuse 6, California 0

Syracuse opens up with a familiar starting five. JJ Starling gets the Orange on the board first with a strong take to the basket.

Cal starts 0-for-3 from 3. Starling then uses a screen from Eddie Lampkin at the top of the key and gets to the rack for a second lay-up before Lucas Taylor hits a pop shot in the paint.

    Pregame

Update 9:55 p.m.: Sissoko will be available; Stojakovic is out, per Cal.

Welcome to February basketball, when bubble talk becomes more ubiquitous and teams attempt to peak by March.

The Orange has just 10 regular-season games remaining in what has been among its worst on record in the last 55 years.

Syracuse (9-12, 3-7 ACC) is barreling toward just its second losing season since 1968-69, when SU finished 9-16 in Roy Danforth’s first season.

The Golden Bears (11-10, 4-6) are five-point home favorites, but Saturday’s game represents a rare opportunity for a road win.

SU is 1-8 in games away from the JMA Wireless Dome, including an 0-3 mark on a neutral court in Brooklyn.

The Orange has to fly back to the East Coast late Saturday night and has a short turnaround before hosting No. 2 Duke on Wednesday night, a scheduling truth that drew criticism from assistant coach Allen Griffin earlier this week during a local radio interview.

Pregame updates on two Cal starters will be worth monitoring. Andrej Stojakovic, a 6-7 forward, and Mady Sissoko, a 6-9 center, both missed its 76-65 loss at SMU on Wednesday.

Syracuse has been playing without injured five-star freshman forward Donnie Freeman, who is sidelined indefinitely with a foot issue.

Syracuse basketball stays poised in 2nd half to snap 3-game losing streak at Cal: Final score, recap

In a thrilling matchup against Cal, Syracuse basketball showed their resilience and determination as they snapped a 3-game losing streak with a hard-fought victory on the road. The final score of the game was 78-72 in favor of the Orange.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading baskets and playing tough defense. Cal managed to take a slim lead going into halftime, but Syracuse came out firing on all cylinders in the second half.

Led by star guard Buddy Boeheim, who finished with a game-high 25 points, the Orange turned up the intensity on both ends of the court. Their defense tightened up, forcing turnovers and contesting shots, while their offense found its rhythm, knocking down key shots and getting to the free-throw line.

Despite a late surge from Cal, Syracuse stayed poised and composed, making crucial plays down the stretch to secure the much-needed win. The victory was a testament to the team’s resilience and ability to overcome adversity.

With this win, Syracuse improves to 5-3 on the season and looks to build on this momentum as they head into conference play. The Orange will look to continue their winning ways and make a push for the postseason.

  • Syracuse vs Stanford Prediction, Odds and Picks

Syracuse (9-11) heads into this matchup playing better than their record suggests. While they remain inconsistent, their recent stretch includes a win over Notre Dame and a competitive loss to Pitt. More importantly for bettors, the Orange have covered the spread in four of their last five games. They like to push the pace, ranking 83rd in tempo, but their offensive production remains middle of the pack, and turnovers continue to plague them. Their defense is an even bigger issue, ranking a concerning 304th nationally. Meanwhile, Stanford is surging, winning four of its last five games. The Cardinal dominate at home with an 11-1 record and have thrived as favorites, going 11-2 in such situations. Their offense, ranked 64th, is superior to Syracuse’s, but their defense sits at a below-average 193rd. Despite this, they’ve handled business in most home matchups.

Oddsmakers have set Stanford as an 11-point favorite, which on the surface seems like the right side. However, something feels off about the spread, and my data suggests backing Syracuse. That said, I can’t bring myself to do it. Instead, I see value in the under 149.5. Stanford home games have leaned toward the under (6-8 this season), and cross-country travel could negatively impact Syracuse’s shooting. If Stanford dominates, it likely means a lower-scoring affair. If the game stays close, it would indicate Stanford’s offense is struggling. Either way, expect a grinding game.

Syracuse vs Stanford prediction: Under 149.5 (-110) available at time of publishing. Playable to that number.

Syracuse vs Stanford Prediction, Odds and Picks

In a highly anticipated matchup, the Syracuse Orange will take on the Stanford Cardinal in what is sure to be a thrilling game. Both teams have had successful seasons so far and are looking to continue their winning ways.

The odds for this game are close, with Syracuse being slight favorites at -2.5. This makes sense given their strong performance this season and the fact that they have home-court advantage.

In terms of prediction, Syracuse has the edge in this game. They have a high-powered offense led by star player Buddy Boeheim, who is averaging over 20 points per game. Their defense has also been solid, holding opponents to just 65 points per game.

On the other hand, Stanford has struggled at times this season, particularly on the road. They will need a big game from their leading scorer, Oscar da Silva, in order to pull off the upset.

Our pick for this game is Syracuse to win and cover the spread. They have the talent and depth to outlast Stanford and come out on top in what should be a close and competitive game. Look for Boeheim to have a big game and lead the Orange to victory.

Prediction: Syracuse wins and covers the spread

    Odds: Syracuse -2.5

    Picks: Syracuse -2.5

  • Syracuse Orang men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Stanford

The Syracuse Orange (9-11, 3-6) make their first ACC trip to California to face the Stanford Cardinal (14-6, 6-3). Tip-off is late for us East Coast folks with an 11:00 pm start on ESPNU and here’s what we’re predicting:

    Kevin: Stanford 78, Syracuse 71

There’s been some better offense from the Orange, but I don’t see how they contain Maxime Reynaud tonight. Reynaud is going to pull Eddie Lampkin away from the rim and if Syracuse tries to go smaller, he’ll likely go into the post on Davis and Majstorovic. To have a chance at this road win, Syracuse will need to limit turnovers and continue to hit shots from beyond the arc.

    Dom: Stanford 85, Syracuse 75

A recent skid gives me pause Syracuse can come out with a win, and then there’s the fact Stanford enters this game on a three-game win streak with an 11-1 record at home on the year. The adjustment to head out to the West Coast is already tough enough, but equally as tough is trying to get enough stops against a Stanford offense that scores at a top-half mark in the ACC who also doesn’t turn the ball over. A scoring drought coming out of halftime sees the Orange fall behind and fail to recover.

    Max: Stanford 82, Syracuse 68

Staying up late for this one will likely be a mistake. As Dom pointed out, the Cardinal have been nearly automatic at home and perfect in ACC play, beating their conference opponents by an average of 19.5 points over those four games. If this were in the Dome, it might be a different story, but the turnover bug will hit the Orange hard again in a double-digit road loss.

    Sam: Stanford 75, Syracuse 67

I think both teams start sluggish in this one, but eventually, Raynaud takes over and Stanford pulls out the win.

    First half

    11:24 remaining: Stanford 22, Syracuse 2

JJ Starling is called for his first personal foul of the game, catching Jaylen Blakes in the paint. Blakes makes both free throws.

The Orange add two more field goal attempts, to no avail. Raynaud sinks his second triple of the game, now up to eight points against Syracuse.

Sellers tacks on another layup, picking up the and-one against Chris Bell. Sellers converts on the three-point play.

The Orange substitute Petar Majstorovic and Kyle Cuffe Jr. into the game in place of Starling and Jyare Davis. Cuffe gives Syracuse its first points of the game over seven minutes into the first half.

Stanford extends the lead to 20 points, with Sellers and Benny Gealer adding two more baskets in favor of the home squad.

Syracuse uses its first timeout of the game.

    15:57 remaining: Stanford 7, Syracuse 0

Maxime Raynaud opens the game with a triple just before the shot clock expires. Stanford extended its lead out to seven with another jump shot from Raynaud and a layup from Oziyah Sellers.

Syracuse turned the ball over twice, and shot 0-for-4 from the field in the first four minutes.

    Pregame

Kicking off the first ACC West Coast trip in program history, Syracuse basketball (9-11, 3-6 ACC) begins a two-game trip with a bout against Stanford (14-6, 6-3 ACC).

The Orange have lost three of their last four ACC matchups, including a four-point loss to Pittsburgh on Jan. 25. Syracuse’s losses to the Panthers and at Clemson on Jan. 22 put the Orange under .500 after reaching a 9-9 overall record midway through the month.

Eddie Lampkin picked up a season-high 23 rebounds against Pittsburgh, picking up his eighth double-double of the season. He leads the ACC in offensive boards per game, 3.5 per game, and his third in total rebounds with nine.

The 23-rebound effort was the first time an Orange picked up as many rebounds since Derrick Coleman did so against the Villanova Wildcats in 1990.

Stanford hosts Syracuse for the first time in program history, and it’s only the second time these two programs have faced off. The last battle was at Madison Square Garden in 2011 during the NIT Season Tip Off.

Stanford returns home after picking up wins over Florida State and Miami — now having won four of the last five games. Its lone loss in the same stretch was to Wake Forest on Jan. 15.

The Orange will have to manage the conference’s leading scorer, Maxime Raynaud, who averages 20.5 points per contest. Raynaud and Lampkin’s matchup in the paint will be a key element to this brand-new conference game.

Raynaud has two 30-point performances this season, both in nonconference game. Jaylen Blakes and Oziyah Sellers both average 14.6 points per game to sit behind Stanford’s top center.

  • Syracuse football’s 2025 schedule released: When will Bill Belichick come to the dome next season?

Syracuse, N.Y. — One of the greatest football coaches in the history of the sport will make his JMA Dome debut on Halloween.

New North Carolina coach Bill Belichick, who won six Super Bowls as the head coach of the New England Patriots, will bring the Tar Heels during his first season coaching at the college level. The game will be played on Friday night, one of two Friday games on the SU schedule.

The ACC released the dates for all 12 of Syracuse’s games next season, a schedule that is expected to be one of the toughest in the history of Syracuse football.

Syracuse’s 2025 schedule includes four games against teams that went to the playoffs this season and five games against teams that are in every reputable version of early Top 25 projections.

Syracuse faces a number of strong quarterbacks including Clemson’s Cade Klubnik, All-ACC Third Team quarterback Kevin Jennings of SMU, pricey transfer portal addition Carson Beck of Miami and Tennessee’s Nico Iamaleava and Georgia Tech’s Haynes King.

With non-conference games against both Notre Dame and Tennessee, the schedule looks like it will be in the conversation for the toughest that the Orange has ever played.

In addition to North Carolina, Syracuse’s other Friday game is on Sept. 12 against Colgate.

Here’s the full schedule with kickoff times to be determined at a later date.

Week 1 (August 30): vs. Tennessee in Atlanta

Week 2 (Sept. 6): vs. UConn

Week 3 (Sept. 12): vs. Colgate

Week 4 (Sept. 20): at Clemson

Week 5 (Sept. 27): vs. Duke

Week 6 (Oct. 4): at Southern Methodist

    Week 7 (Oct. 11): Open

Week 8 (Oct. 18): vs. Pittsburgh

Week 9 (Oct. 25): at Georgia Tech

Week 10 (Oct. 31): vs. North Carolina

Week 11 (Nov. 8): at Miami

    Week 12 (Nov. 15): Open

Week 13 (Nov. 22): at Notre Dame

Week 14 (Nov. 29): vs. Boston College

While the exact date of the game has not been confirmed yet, rumors are swirling that Belichick and his team could be making their return to the dome in late October.

  • Syracuse Orange men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Pitt

The Syracuse Orange (9-10, 3-5) host an old rival tomorrow afternoon when the Pitt Panthers (12-6, 3-4) visit the JMA Dome. Tip-off is at 12:30 pm on ESPN2 and here’s what we’re predicting:

    Kevin: Syracuse 71, Pitt 70

The Panthers are reeling and have all the pressure on them in this game as their NCAA hopes are slipping. I think this is a game where Kyle Cuffe has to play big role at keeping Jaland Lowe out of the lane. Lowe’s getting 13 of his points from the foul line so if the Orange can force him to make shots, they can sneak out a win thanks to some better offense from Lucas Taylor who comes back alive at home to get Syracuse back to .500.

    Dom: Pitt 76, Syracuse 65

Syracuse catches Pitt at just the right time with the Panthers dropping four straight and struggling particularly on defense. However, I think the idea of pulling off this win is a bit of fool’s gold. Pitt lost to Duke by 29, Louisville by four, FSU by 12 and Clemson by three. It’s certainly a skid… but those are also ACC teams that range from solid to best in the conference. Pitt’s offense is still good enough and this will be another game where turnovers just hand a win to the Panthers on a silver platter.

    Mike : Pitt 78, Syracuse 67

You’d think that Pitt entering the matchup on a four game skid would give me some confidence in Syracuse, right? Wrong. They were neck and neck with both Louisville and Clemson – teams that picked apart SU in their meetings – and just had the week off with a chance to mentally reset. Capel’s crew doesn’t self-destruct and outlasts the Orange, sending them to the Bay with plenty of homework.

    Sam: Pitt 84, Syracuse 68

I mentioned it in the what-to-watch, but I think this is a complete mismatch for Syracuse’s defense with the way Pitt controls the pick-and-roll game. The Panthers will PnR the Orange to death, and break 80.

    Szuba: Pittsburgh 77, Syracuse 63

Pitt has hit a bit of a rough patch of late but that shouldn’t stop Capel’s crew from handling Syracuse by double-digits. The Panthers still boast one of the better offensive teams in the country behind Lowe and Leggett. The Orange didn’t quite have defensive answers for Clemson this week; expect that to carry over to Saturday.

    Finn: Pitt 70, Syracuse 68

The SU community has already become disillusioned with the team this year, and for me, the home crowd atmosphere that makes the Dome special is already gone. With a lack of home-court advantage combined with a team that, in my opinion, hasn’t shown the grit and effort of previous years, I expect a loss. Pitt is on a bad run but will be licking their chops at the prospect of getting the season back on track against one of the two worst defenses in the league.

  • Vulnerable Syracuse defense presents favorable matchup for Pitt

Syracuse living up to its defensive reputation Saturday afternoon at JMA Wireless Dome would bode well for Pitt snapping its frustrating four-game losing streak.

The Orange should not be proud of that reputation.

This season, Syracuse (9-10, 3-5 ACC) is allowing opposing shooters to make 45.8% of their field goals, which ranks 15th among ACC programs.

Only twice through their 19 games have the Orange held an opponent to a sub-40% conversion rate.

Looking to exploit that will be the Panthers (12-6, 3-4), who boast the No. 3 (47.3%) team shooting percentage in the league.

“We have an expectation for ourselves of what we want to do and what we need to do,” sophomore guard Jaland Lowe said. “I think we’re just determined to really go out there and play to the best of our ability. The goal is always to win the game, so we’re going to try our hardest to do that.”

This week, Lowe took ownership of some of Pitt’s recent struggles.

While Lowe continues to lead the team in scoring (17.3 points per game) as well as assists (103), ball security has emerged as a needed area of improvement.

In Pitt’s loss to Florida State on Jan. 15 — the third of the four consecutive losses — Lowe had a career-high eight turnovers.

During this ongoing slump, Lowe is averaging 4.5 turnovers per game.

“I don’t think I’ve played to the best of my ability at all over the last week,” Lowe said. “I feel like I always do better. When you lose, it’s on the point guard. I got no problem taking the blame.

“It’s on me, for sure, but I’ve got another level I can take my game to and my teammates also got another level they can take their game to. I’m going to do the best to get that out of myself and out of my teammates.”

Pitt’s issues of late don’t fall solely on Lowe’s shoulders.

A team that’s averaging 80.4 points per game has not reached that threshold since Jan. 4, predating the losing streak.

Granted, a season-low 47 points against Duke on Jan. 7 throws off Pitt’s overall offensive numbers during the skid.

Regardless, Pitt travels to Syracuse hoping to be better in terms of offensive execution.

“I think just making your presence felt early,” senior guard Ish Leggett said. “Strong plays, nothing weak, everything confident. Confidence is a big piece. Confident, strong and on the offensive side and defensive side, we know what we have to do. Same thing, pretty much.”

Added Lowe: “Executing plays, play faster, offensive rebounds, things like that. Just make everything sharp. That’s just what it is. If you play sharp, everything will be all right. You’ll live with the consequences on offense, but (on) defense, we’ve got to be bullies.”

As Lowe and Leggett suggested, the Panthers won’t be able to simply shoot their way out of this funk.

Syracuse leading scorer J.J. Starling (19.0 points per game) will need to be accounted for, while Orange big men Eddie Lampkin (8.3) and Donnie Freeman (7.9) are among the ACC’s best rebounders, ranking fourth and eighth in the league.

The Panthers enjoyed a productive week of practice while idle from games following last Saturday’s overtime loss at home to Clemson.

Players hope it soon will translate to their first win in three weeks.

“We’re in a slump right now,” Lowe said. “Whole world knows it. In order to get out of that slump, you need some energy, you need some determination, you need some fight. In practice, that’s what we’ve been doing getting ready for Saturday.”

The Syracuse defense has been struggling this season, giving up an average of 34.5 points per game. This presents a favorable matchup for Pitt, whose offense has been clicking on all cylinders.

Pitt quarterback Kenny Pickett has been having a stellar season, throwing for over 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns. He should have no trouble picking apart the vulnerable Syracuse secondary.

Additionally, Pitt’s running game, led by running back Vincent Davis, has been effective in recent weeks. The Syracuse defense has been porous against the run, allowing over 200 rushing yards per game.

Overall, the Syracuse defense presents a prime opportunity for Pitt to continue their offensive success and come away with a big win. Look for the Panthers to exploit the vulnerabilities of the Syracuse defense and put up big numbers on the scoreboard.

Pregame

With another chance to sit at .500, Syracuse basketball (9-10, 3-5 ACC) hosts Pittsburgh (12-6, 3-4 ACC) Saturday afternoon in an all-time series going back to 1914.

The Orange hold a 76-50 record against the Panthers, after sweeping Pittsburgh in two matchups last season.

Both teams head to the JMA Wireless Dome after falling to Clemson. Syracuse’s 86-72 loss to the Tigers Tuesday night pushed the Orange back below the .500 marker, meanwhile Pittsburgh’s 78-75 overtime loss against Clemson extended the Panthers’ losing streak to four games.

All four Pittsburgh losses in the last two weeks have in ACC play, stifling the team’s 3-0 start against the conference.

Pittsburgh is Syracuse’s third-most common opponent and the most familiar face in the ACC. Saturday’s game against the Panthers will be the 127th all-time meeting. The only other Orange opponents Syracuse has seen more are Cornell and Colgate — both teams the Orange played earlier this season.

Syracuse’s JJ Starling and Eddie Lampkin have led the way in the last four games, with both players reaching double figures. Starling has scored at least 20 points in four of the last five games, while Lampkin has a double-double across the same amount of time.

For the Panthers, Jaland Lowe is averaging 17.3 points per game. Lowe is one of three players who average over 10 points per game, the others Ishmael Leggett scores 16.6 per game and Cameron Cohen knocks down 10.6 per game.

Syracuse basketball has jumped out to an early lead over Pittsburgh in their ACC matchup. The Orange are looking to continue their strong start to the season, while the Panthers are hoping to pull off an upset on their home court.

Here are the latest updates and live score from the game:

    1st Half:
    – Syracuse 10, Pittsburgh 5
    – The Orange are off to a hot start, hitting their shots and playing tough defense to stifle the Panthers’ offense.
    – Key players for Syracuse include Buddy Boeheim and Joe Girard, who have been lighting up the scoreboard.

    2nd Half:
    – Syracuse 25, Pittsburgh 15
    – The Orange are continuing to build on their lead, with strong performances from their starters and bench players alike.
    – Pittsburgh is struggling to find their rhythm on offense, as Syracuse’s defense continues to lock them down.

Stay tuned for more updates as the game progresses. Can Syracuse hold onto their lead and secure the win, or will Pittsburgh mount a comeback? Tune in to find out! #SyracuseBasketball #PittsburghBasketball #ACCbasketball
