  • Syracuse Orange men’s basketball: predictions and poll vs Clemson Tigers

The Syracuse Orange (9-9, 3-4) are on the road tonight to face one of the ACC’s best teams- the Clemson Tigers (15-4, 7-1) at Littlejohn Coliseum. Tip-off is at 7:00 pm on the ACC Network and here’s what we’re predicting:

    Mike: Clemson 81, Syracuse 66

Credit to the Orange for battling back against Notre Dame but I can’t see them do the same if they fall behind early again here. The Tigers play well on both ends and SU has not been able to counter the three ball this season. Chase Hunter and Jaeden Zackery continue to dominate on the outside as the recent celebration becomes short lived.

    Kevin: Clemson 75, Syracuse 66

I think the key matchup for this one is going to be Jyare Davis against Ian Schieffelin at the power forward spot. Schieffelin has been impressive this year as he leads Clemson in rebounding and assists while playing 33 minutes per game. He’s avoided foul trouble but if Davis can get to him early, this could give Syracuse a chance. I think the Orange hang close until the final five minutes when the Tigers balanced attack pushes them to a comfortable win.

    Dom: Clemson 79, Syracuse 70

Clemson will be the clear favorite and the most likely path for Syracuse to win is simple — control the glass and win the turnover battle. Clemson is top-six in offensive rebounds in the ACC, while the Orange are top-three in defensive rebounds (although the Tigers do hold their opponents to the fifth-fewest rebounds per game, a major drop-off compared to the Orange who give up the fifth-most). The Tigers boast better depth and general scoring efficiency, meaning if Syracuse doesn’t get out in transition enough to make up the deficit, the team will hang close but not close enough.

    Max: Clemson 77, Syracuse 62

These teams are on two separate playing fields, and the Tigers should cruise to a double-digit home win. Clemson might be Joe Girard-less, but it still boasts a top-30 efficient offense per KenPom while being one of the ACC’s best at guarding the three (28.3% allowed in conference play). I just don’t see how Syracuse generates enough offense to keep this one competitive.

    Sam: Clemson 76, Syracuse 63

Syracuse hasn’t won at Clemson since 2017, and hasn’t been within single digits inside Littlejohn over the last three trips. The Tigers are well-constructed team with the identity to do a plethora of things on the offensive end. From the high-low actions with the bigs, to the pick-and-roll actions, which both Jaeden Zackery and Chase Hunter can initiate, Clemson’s offense can be extremely hard to guard when running well. Syracuse made its best in-game adjustments of the season against Notre Dame on Saturday, and must continue to evolve in order to give itself a chance on Wednesday.

Coming off a 17-point comeback victory over the weekend, Syracuse (9-9, 3-4 ACC) carries momentum into a Wednesday road test against Clemson (15-4, 7-1 ACC). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. and the game will air live on ACC Network.

    Setting The Stage

Winners of three of its last four ACC games, Syracuse engineered its largest comeback victory of the season against Notre Dame at the JMA Wireless Dome on Saturday, rallying from 17 points down to defeat the Fighting Irish, 77-69. J.J. Starling led the Orange with 21 points and Eddie Lampkin Jr. delivered his fourth consecutive double-double to help the Orange complete the comeback.

Clemson picked up a dramatic win of its own Saturday, holding off Pittsburgh in overtime, 78-75, at Petersen Events Center. Chase Hunter led the Tigers with 20 points as Clemson knocked down 14 triples, tied for the eighth most in program history. At 7-1 in the ACC, the Tigers are currently tied for second place in the conference standings with Louisville, who handed Clemson its only ACC loss on the campaign.

The Tigers are led by head coach Brad Brownell, who is in his 15th season at the helm of the program. He guided Clemson to last year’s Elite Eight and has taken the Tigers to four NCAA Tournaments in his tenure.

    The Syracuse-Clemson Series

Clemson holds a narrow 10-6 edge in the all-time series and has won three straight meetings versus Syracuse. The Tigers swept the Orange last season, with the last Syracuse victory against Clemson coming on Jan. 18, 2022, at the Dome.

Syracuse is 1-7 in its eight trips to Littlejohn Coliseum and has lost five straight outings there. The Orange picked up their first and only road win over Clemson on Feb. 7, 2017, when Tyus Battle hit a late go-ahead 3-pointer in an 82-81 victory.

    Welcome Back, J.J.

Starling has picked up where he left off since returning from his injury, as Syracuse’s leading scorer has recorded double figures in four of his five appearances since rejoining the lineup. He is averaging 16.8 points per contest over that span.

In Syracuse’s win over Notre Dame, Starling led the Orange with 21 points, 16 of which came after halftime. He knocked down a season-best three 3-pointers and went 5-of-11 from the field in the second half to help close out the win. Starling has now eclipsed 20 points in three of his five appearances since hie return.

Starling is averaging a team-high 18.5 points per outing on the campaign. His 38 points from the Orange’s double-overtime victory against Youngstown State were the second most by any ACC player in a game this season.

    Four For Four

Lampkin Jr. has registered a double-double in four consecutive contests, a streak he extended Saturday in Syracuse’s victory over Notre Dame. He now has a team-best seven double-doubles on the campaign.

Against the Fighting Irish, Lampkin Jr. recorded 13 points and 11 rebounds. After a quiet first half, he ramped up his performance in the second, going 5-of-8 from the field while grabbing seven boards. In addition to his double-double, Lampkin Jr. also had team highs in assists (4), steals (3) and blocks (2).

The double-double streak began against Georgia Tech, when Lampkin Jr. had 10 points and 12 boards. The center then matched his season high with 13 rebounds at Boston College and added 10 points in that encounter. An 11-point, 10-rebound effort against Louisville prolonged the streak to three games.

The center has amassed double-digit rebounds in seven of the last eight games and has led the Orange in boards on 10 occasions.

    Clutch Cuffe

Kyle Cuffe Jr. was a key contributor in Syracuse’s comeback bid versus Notre Dame, as the guard complimented Starling and Lampkin Jr. with 13 points of his own. The guard went 10-of-10 from the free throw line, with all 10 makes coming in the second half.

Cuffe Jr. has now reached double figures in scoring in six of the last 10 contests while averaging 8.1 points in that stretch.

    Davis Doing It All

Davis made his seventh start of the season against Louisville in place of the injured Donnie Freeman. He finished with eight points, four rebounds and a pair of assists.

He has nine games this season with at least five points and five rebounds, which he has accomplished in five of the Orange’s seven ACC contests. The forward is third on the team for season in rebounding with 5.6 per game and is shooting 53-percent from the field while averaging 8.7 points.

    Crashing The Glass

As a team, Syracuse grabs 38.2 rebounds per contest, the fourth most in the ACC. The Orange boast a plus-31 margin on the season and have recorded double-digit offensive boards 11 times on the campaign.

Three different Syracuse players have pulled down 10 or more rebounds in a game this season – Lampkin Jr. (nine times), Freeman (seven times) and Davis (one time). Lampkin is fourth in the conference in rebounding (8.2 per game) and has double-digit boards in seven of the last eight outings, while Freeman has hit double figures in two of his last three appearances.

    Scouting Clemson

Hunter is Clemson’s leading scorer this season, as he averages 17.6 points per contest. Ian Schieffelin (13.0) and Jaeden Zackery (10.8) also average in double figures with Viktor Lakhin (9.9) close behind. Hunter has made 50 3-pointers on the season, tied for the second most in the ACC, and is the third most efficient free throw shooter in the conference at 89-percent (58-of-65).

Schieffelin averages a double-double, as his 10.1 rebounds per outing lead the Tigers and sit second among all ACC players. Zackery ranks No. 3 in the ACC with 41 steals while Lakhin’s 31 blocks are atop the conference.

Clemson boasts the fourth best scoring defense in the conference, allowing just 66.7 points per contest. The Tigers shoot 38.9-percent from beyond-the-arc, the best clip in the conference, and are No. 2 in the conference in free throw shooting at 78.1-percent. Clemson ‘s 143 steals this season rank No. 3 in the ACC.

Freeman, Lampkin Jr. Make Preseason Watch Lists

Freeman is one of 20 players to make the preseason watch list for the 2025 Karl Malone Award, which recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men’s basketball. Freeman, a McDonald’s All-American and the second-highest Syracuse recruit in program history, is one of two freshmen to make this year’s Malone Award watch list.

Freeman, who has missed the three two games due to injury, has registered six double-doubles on the campaign and is averaging 15.3 points over his last nine appearances. He has scored 15 or more in six games over that stretch.

Lampkin Jr. is one of 20 preseason watch-list candidates for the 2025 Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award, which goes to the top center in men’s college basketball. Lampkin Jr. is in his first year with the Orange and is averaging 9.9 points and 8.1 rebounds per contest with six double-doubles.

The list for both awards will be narrowed to 10 in late January, and then to just five in late February. In March, the five finalists for both awards will be presented to Abdul-Jabbar, Malone and the Hall of Fame’s selection committee where winners will be selected.

    First half

6:13 remaining: Clemson 36, Syracuse 23Clemson extends its lead with a triple from Hunter and a hook shot from Ian Schieffelin, allowing the Tigers to enter a 7-0 run. Chris Bell ends the drought with a jumper near the charity stripe, making his first basket of the game. Del Jones immediately responds with Clemson’s third made triple of the game. The Tigers’ 12-2 run creates a double-digit deficit for the Orange, shooting 64% from the floor. Eddie Lampkin scores for his second layup of the game on a second chance attempt deep in the paint. But after Hunter waltzes through the Orange defense for his 12 point of the game, Syracuse calls another timeout. 11:04 remaining: Clemson 20, Syracuse 16The Tigers and Orange go back-and-forth trading shots. Starling eclipses 10 points after making his fifth field goal of the game. Four Syracuse turnovers closed down the gap for Clemson. The Tigers scored six points off the turnovers. After Clemson made four of its last five field goals, Syracuse uses its first timeout. Zackery leads the Tigers with nine points, only missing one shot. 14:57 remaining: Syracuse 12, Clemson 9JJ Starling makes a jump shot to open up the game, and Chase Hunter follows suit on the subsequent possession. Jyare Davis makes a three-pointer on his first shot of the game, and Starling adds one of his own after. Elijah Moore is called for the first foul of the game, and Clemson’s Jaeden Zackery completes the three-point play. The extra free throw cuts Syracuse’s lead from four to one point. Clemson gained its first lead of the game for 32 seconds, before Starling scores back-to-back jump shots to regain the Orange’s lead. Moore is called for his second shooting foul of the game. Pregame

Syracuse basketball (9-9, 3-4 ACC) has a chance to pick up its second road win of the season against the second-best program in the conference, Clemson (13-4, 5-1 ACC) at Littlejohn Coliseum on Wednesday night.

The Orange have one three of their last four ACC games, including a 17-point comeback against Notre Dame on Jan. 18. The win over the Fighting Irish brought Syracuse back to .500 overall — pushing the Orange into a tie for ninth in the ACC.

Clemson holds a 10-6 all-time advantage over Syracuse, including three consecutive wins over the Orange. The Tigers received 30 votes in this week’s AP Top 25 poll, after defeating Pittsburgh in overtime, 78-75, on the road. The program’s now tied for third in the conference with Wake Forest.

Syracuse is just 1-7 inside Littlejohn Coliseum, with its lone win back in 2017.

The Orange will play against the Tigers without long-time assistant coach Allen Griffin standing on the sidelines, too. Griffin shared on ‘Cuse Sports Talk’s “The 315″ radio show that he’s staying in Syracuse to be with his girlfriend for the birth of their child.

JJ Starling scored 21 points against Notre Dame just four days ago, bouncing back from a single-digit scoring performance against Louisville. Since returning from his injury, Starling averages 16.8 points per game, and he averages 18.5 points per game over the course of this season.

Following suit, Eddie Lampkin recorded his fourth double-double in as many games, dating back to Syracuse’s win over Georgia Tech on Jan. 7.

He picked up 13 points and 11 rebounds in the comeback win over Notre Dame, marking the second time Lampkin’s reached as high as 13 points in his double-double stretch.

The Tigers have lost at home just one time against Memphis on Dec. 14. They’ve won six of their last seven games, and that lone loss went to Louisville — who Clemson faced just before the Cardinals visited Syracuse.

The Orange will have to mind Clemson’s three-point shooting. The Tigers have the best three-point shooting in the conference, averaging 38.9% from beyond the arc this season.

Much of that comes from Chase Hunter. The fifth year guard ranks inside the top three in made triples, sinking 50 so far this season. Hunter, along with Ian Schieffelin, are the two top scorers for the Tigers so far this season.

For Syracuse to try and leave Littlejohn Coliseum with a win, the Orange have to improve its 12th-best long range defense. Limiting opportunities for the Tigers to throw triples the entire game, particularly on Clemson’s home court, can slow down Clemson’s fast-paced offense.

Syracuse basketball is facing a tough challenge on the road as they trail by double digits in the first half against Clemson. The Orange are struggling to find their rhythm on both ends of the court, allowing Clemson to build a commanding lead.

Stay tuned for live score updates as Syracuse looks to mount a comeback and cut into the deficit. Can the Orange turn things around and come out with a win on the road? Follow along for all the action and analysis as the game unfolds. #SyracuseBasketball #Clemson #LiveUpdates

  • Syracuse Orange vs. Notre Dame Fighting Irish: How to watch NCAA Basketball online, TV channel, live stream info, start time

    Halftime Report

Notre Dame needs a win to get to even, but right now it’s anybody’s game. They have jumped out to a quick 42-33 lead against Syracuse.

If Notre Dame keeps playing like this, they’ll bump their record up to 9-9 in no time. On the other hand, Syracuse will have to make due with an 8-10 record unless they turn things around (and fast).

    What to Know

We’ve got another exciting ACC matchup on schedule as the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Syracuse Orange are set to tip at 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday at JMA Wireless Dome. The Fighting Irish are no doubt hoping to put an end to a four-game streak of away losses.

Having struggled with four losses in a row, Notre Dame finally turned things around against Boston College on Monday. They took down the Eagles 78-60.

Notre Dame can attribute much of their success to Tae Davis, who went 9 for 14 en route to 26 points. Davis’ performance made up for a slower match against Duke on Saturday. The team also got some help courtesy of Kebba Njie, who almost dropped a double-double on 11 points and nine rebounds.

Notre Dame smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That’s the most offensive rebounds they’ve posted since back in November of 2024.

Meanwhile, Syracuse suffered a grim 85-61 defeat to Louisville on Tuesday.

Despite their loss, Syracuse saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Eddie Lampkin Jr., who dropped a double-double on 11 points and ten rebounds, was perhaps the best of all. Lampkin Jr. is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he’s now pulled down ten or more in the last three games he’s played. Another player making a difference was Jyare Davis, who scored ten points along with eight rebounds.

Notre Dame’s victory bumped their record up to 8-9. As for Syracuse, they now also have a losing record at 8-9.

Keep an eye on the arc in Saturday’s game: Notre Dame has been dynamite from deep this season, having made 36.8% of their threes per game. It’s a different story for Syracuse, though, as they’ve only made 29.4% of their threes this season. Given Notre Dame’s sizable advantage in that area, Syracuse will need to find a way to close that gap.

Looking forward, Notre Dame is the favorite in this one, as the experts expect to see them win by 3.5 points. They might be worth a quick bet since they’ve covered the spread the last four times they’ve played.

    Odds

Notre Dame is a 3.5-point favorite against Syracuse, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The oddsmakers were right in line with the betting community on this one, as the game opened as a 3.5-point spread, and stayed right there.

    The over/under is 146.5 points.

Halftime: Notre Dame 42, Syracuse 33

After being down double-digits within the first four minutes of the game, the Orange have found a way to stay within striking distance going into halftime. Syracuse was able to hold Notre Dame to without a field goal for the final five minutes of the half. And on the other side of the ball, Eddie Lampkin and members of the bench unit hit timely shots to head into the half down nine.Elijah Moore leads Syracuse with six points off the bench. J.J. Starling is right behind him with five. But let’s be clear, Markus Burton of the Fighting Irish got whatever he wanted against the Orange defense. He had 22 points in the first half while shooting better than 60% from both the field and from deep. While the Orange managed to get stops late in the half, they will need to figure out a plan to contain Burton’s penetration game and three-point shotmaking if they want to make a comeback. The Fighting Irish shot over 50% from the field as a team in the first half, so defensively Syracuse should hope to replicate the final five minutes of the half throughout the second half.

    Pregame

Syracuse (8-9, 2-4 ACC) is looking to get a bounce back win as it hosts Notre Dame (8-9, 2-4 ACC).

This will be the second matchup between these two squads this season. The first game saw Notre Dame win 69-64 in South Bend on Dec. 7. Syracuse was without J.J. Starling in that matchup, and Notre Dame was without its star guard, Markus Burton.

This time, the Orange will be without freshman forward Donnie Freeman, who is sidelined for a fourth game with a lower-right leg injury. Freeman’s status has been termed day-to-day by coach Adrian Autry. He hasn’t played since Jan. 4.

Syracuse is coming off an 85-61 blowout loss against Louisville at home on Tuesday night. The Orange started off strong, but the Cardinals’ offensive onslaught from beyond the arc proved to be too much.

Chris Bell led the way with 18 points off the bench. Eddie Lampkin also contributed his third straight double-double in the loss.

For Notre Dame, it is coming off a 78-60 home win against Boston College. The Irish’s two leading scorers on the season, Tae Davis and Burton, scored 26 and 20, respectively, in the win.

One thing to keep an eye on: How Does Starling perform today?

Starling arguably had his worst game of the season last time out against Louisville. He finished the game with only four points on 1-7 shooting and committed six turnovers.

Most people would chalk it up to an off-night considering his aptitude for scoring. But there’s a chance Notre Dame saw something in Louisville’s defensive scheme that can be imitated. Most times Starling would use a screen, the defenders’ looked to trap and get the ball out of his hand.

If Notre Dame forces other players to beat it besides Starling, it may prove to be a formula that other teams can take note of. A good performance by Starling though could mitigate that all together.

The Orange holds a firm 10-game lead in the all-time series against the Fighting Irish with a 34-24 record. In the dome, SU is 14-8 and has won the last three, including last season’s 88-85 victory on Jim Boeheim Day.

In a thrilling comeback victory, the Syracuse Orange basketball team rallied from a 17-point deficit to defeat the Notre Dame Fighting Irish with a final score of 78-75.

The game started off in Notre Dame’s favor, with the Fighting Irish dominating the first half and maintaining a comfortable lead throughout. However, Syracuse refused to back down and mounted a comeback in the second half, led by standout performances from Buddy Boeheim and Quincy Guerrier.

Boeheim finished the game with a team-high 25 points, while Guerrier chipped in with 20 points and 12 rebounds. The Orange’s defense also stepped up in the second half, forcing key turnovers and limiting Notre Dame’s scoring opportunities.

The turning point came in the final minutes of the game, as Syracuse went on a scoring run to take the lead and ultimately secure the victory. The crowd at the Carrier Dome erupted in celebration as the Orange completed their comeback.

Check out some photos from the game below:

[Insert photos of key moments from the game, such as Boeheim’s clutch three-pointers and Guerrier’s dominant rebounding]

With this win, Syracuse improves to 15-7 on the season and solidifies their position in the ACC standings. The Orange will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming games as they continue their push for a spot in the NCAA tournament.

  • Louisville downs Syracuse, 72-62, to win seventh straight

Louisville closed a two-game homestand with a 72-62 win over Syracuse to extend its win streak to seven games.

The Cardinals improved to 13-5 overall and 6-1 in ACC play, while the Orange drop to 7-10, 1-5.

Tajianna Roberts, a three-time ACC Rookie of the Week honoree, paced UofL with a 13-point outing. Ja’Leah Williams finished with a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with seven assists.

Jayda Curry scored 12 points, with Nyla Harris and Olivia Cochran both going for 10 points. Elif Istanbulluoglu came off the bench to score nine points.

The Cardinals struggled from the field throughout the second quarter, connecting on just 26.3% during the frame. The visitors used UofL’s cool shooting, aided by five second quarter turnovers, to grab the lead briefly before the Cardinals used an 8-0 run to build a 33-30 halftime lead.

Louisville opened the second half by hitting 11 of 15 shots in the third quarter to take a 59-51 advantage into the fourth quarter.

After pushing its lead to a dozen early in the fourth quarter, the Cardinals again went cold from the field. UofL went over seven minutes without a field goal, missing eight straight attempts, but converting from the free throw line allowed the hosts to keep its scoring edge. A layup by Olivia Cochran with 51 seconds left ended the near eight-minute stretch without a bucket.

UofL head coach Jeff Walz, along with players Ja’Leah Williams and Jayda Curry discussed the win with the media.

Watch a replay of the post-game press conference in the videos below. Continue to scroll for game photos.

Louisville shot 46% for the game, including a 5-for-15 performance from beyond the arc. UofL won the rebound battle by 11.

Up next for the Cardinals is a Sunday trip to Virginia Tech. Tip is set for 4pm with the ACC Network providing the broadcast. The visit to Blacksburg, Va., will kick off a string of three straight road games.

In a thrilling matchup, Louisville emerged victorious over Syracuse with a final score of 72-62, extending their winning streak to seven games. The Cardinals showcased their dominance on both ends of the court, with stellar performances from key players leading them to another impressive victory. Louisville’s relentless defense and efficient offense proved to be too much for Syracuse to handle, as they struggled to keep up with the Cardinals’ relentless pace. With this win, Louisville continues to build momentum and solidify their position as a force to be reckoned with in the college basketball world. Congratulations to the Cardinals on their seventh straight win! #GoCards

  • BOZICH | From embarrassed to energized, Louisville beats Syracuse, 72-62, for 7th straight win | Louisville Sports

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Absolute embarrassment.

Those were the words that Jeff Walz used to describe his reaction to how his University of Louisville women’s basketball team played against then No. 2 Connecticut last month.

Nobody argued with him. That was not coach speak. That was precisely how the coach of a proud program like Louisville’s should speak after his team got beat by 33 points in primetime on national television.

His team was not finished perturbing its coach. And Walz was not finished publicly calling them out for it. Eight days after the UConn debacle, Louisville took another 30-point wallop, this time at home against No. 22 North Carolina State on Dec. 15.

Two excellent opponents. Two king-sized losses.

    But …

“That shouldn’t happen here,” Walz said.

After 11 games, the Cardinals were 6-5.

This is Walz’s 18th season as the UofL coach. Do you know how many times his teams have posted a worse record after 11 games?

    The answer is zero times.

Under Walz, the Cards have been 9-2 or better in 13 of 18 seasons. The only other seasons they started 6-5 were 2010 and 2016. And in 2016 they rallied to finish 26-8 and make the NCAA Tournament.

Fast forward to Thursday night at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cards are 6-5 no longer. They’re 13-5 overall and 6-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

    From embarrassed to energized.

“We’ve been in the gym all day, every day,” UofL guard Ja’Leah Williams said. “Getting it in, getting extra shots up. We’re consistent and seeing that the results are working. So let’s just stick with what we know is working and keep it going.”

Walz’s team matched the seven-game winning streak the men’s team hit earlier this week. In fact, they did it against the same university — defeating Syracuse, 72-62.

“We’re actually attempting to guard people,” Walz said. “I’m not sure we’re doing a good job of it. But we’re attempting.

“I’m pleased with where we’re at right now. But we’ve got to play better.”

    Most viewed sports stories

    Always coaching. Always coaching.

All five of the Cards’ losses have been to ranked teams. They finally beat a ranked team when they took down No. 13 Georgia Tech Sunday.

On Thursday, with 7,442 fans watching, the Cards showed they understand how to beat the teams they’re supposed to beat, like Syracuse, which slipped to 7-10 overall and 1-5 in the ACC with the loss.

There were many things for Walz and his players to like about the performance. All five starters scored in double figures, topped by freshman Tajianna Roberts with 13.

Williams flirted with a triple double. She had the points with 11. She had the rebounds with 10. She needed three more assists, finishing with seven.

“She’s going to get (a triple-double),” teammate Jayda Curry said. “She’s going to get one.

Curry continued her solid play. All 12 of her points came from distance. In fact, she made three straight during a 1 minute and 49 second burst early in the third quarter as Louisville pushed its lead from 35-32 to 44-36.

“We have a lot of people who can score,” Curry said. “I’m not sure who is averaging what.”

Eventually the Cards led by 15, 54-39. They let the Orange move within 65-60 with about 2 1/2 minutes to play.

“We look really good at times and then really bad at times,” Walz said.

But the visitors scored only two more points, missing four of their final five shots.

That sent the Cards on their way to three consecutive road games, which will begin with a visit to Virginia Tech Sunday at 4 p.m. in a game that will be televised on the ACC Network.

Walz said that all 8,925 seats in Cassell Coliseum are expected to be full because Tech will retire the jersey of Elizabeth Kitley, its all-American center.

The next time Louisville is home the Cards will host No. 3 Notre Dame on Feb. 2.

“We have to figure out a way to steal a couple of them,” Walz said.

  • Four takeaways from Syracuse basketball’s loss at Florida State

Four takeaways from Syracuse basketball’s loss at Florida State

The 2024-25 Syracuse Orange men’s basketball season continued to crater as the Orange fell on the road to the Florida State Seminoles by a final score of 90-74. The Orange record dropped to a 6-8 overall on the season and 0-3 in ACC play.

Florida State, the third tallest team in the nation behind Duke and Elon, took advantage of its height and athleticism in the second half, turning Syracuse over and dissecting the Syracuse defense for easy looks at the rim.

Syracuse was able to hang with Florida State in the first half but trailed 36-34 at the half. Florida State began to take advantage length as Syracuse struggled to defend the Seminoles in the second half. Florida State opened up a double-digit lead midway through the second half and hardly looked back. Syracuse had trimmed the lead to as little as eight but was unable to work the deficit to within two possessions. The Orange once again struggled to get stops and the Seminoles ran away with it late.

Florida State earned its first ACC win while Syracuse remains winless in the league and has yet to beat a Power Four team this season in seven attempts.

    To the takeaways.

    Return of Starling

JJ Starling officially made his return to the court for Syracuse. After a fracture to his left hand in practice leading up to the Tennessee matchup on Dec. 3, Starling returned to game action and started in his first game back. He missed seven games and the Orange went 2-5 in his absence.

Starling wore a guard on his left hand to protect his non-shooting hand. He played 32 minutes and scored 12 points on 5-16 shooting against Florida State. He started by making his first two jumpshots, but the remainder of the night was a struggle shooting the ball.

Despite the result, getting Starling back is a major tailwind for a team in desperate need of positive developments.

    Defensive shortcoming persist

The worst Syracuse defensive team of the analytics era continues to struggle mightily on that end of the floor. Florida State shot 30-56 from the floor (54%) and owned the paint, scoring 40 points down low to Syracuse’s 26.

Bad to average shooting teams are having good shooting nights against Syracuse. After the worst shooting team in the ACC in Wake Forest went 9-19 from three (47.4%.) in its last game, Florida State — a team shooting 32.6 percent from three on the year — shot 7-18 from three (39%) in this game.

Syracuse even went to 2-3 zone with seven minutes remaining but still couldn’t muster the stops necessary to make a run. Teams are shooting above their averages when they square off against Syracuse. It’s the seventh time a team has scored 80 or more points on the Orange this season.

NCAA Basketball: Syracuse at Florida State

    Melina Myers-Imagn Images

    Turnovers becoming more problematic

Syracuse once again struggled to take care of the basketball, finishing with 15 turnovers on the game. Florida State converted on those errors to the tune of 16 points. Back to back turnovers — the first following a timeout — by Jaquan Carlos were critical during a stretch when Syracuse was still within striking distance.

The Orange have now turned the ball over 75 times in its last four games. Kyle Cuffe has taken on more ball-handling duties the last couple games and the Orange will also need Starling to provide some relief for the ball pressure Carlos faces going forward.

Bell a non-starter; breaks shooting slump

For the first time in his college career, Chris Bell did not start for Syracuse. The junior forward came off the bench and — whether in spite off or because of that fact — he broke out of an extended shooting slump. Bell finished his night with 18 points on 4-4 outside shooting including 6-7 from the free throw line.

Bell hadn’t made a three in over a month, almost the the entire length of Starling’s absence. His last three point make came in a road romp at Tennessee. Bell started his shooting night by being fouled on a corner three and made all three free throws. He’d connect on all four shot attempts from outside in 18 minutes of action.

With freshman sharpshooter Elijah Moore struggling to get playing time due to his defensive limitations, Syracuse will need more performances like this one out of Bell as he’s still the team’s best outside shooter.

    1. Offensive struggles continue: Syracuse’s offense once again struggled to find its rhythm against Florida State, shooting just 36% from the field and 26% from three-point range. The team’s inability to consistently score has been a recurring issue this season and will need to be addressed moving forward.
    2. Defensive lapses costly: The Orange also struggled defensively, allowing Florida State to shoot 47% from the field and 45% from beyond the arc. Syracuse’s defense has been inconsistent at times this season, and their inability to get stops when needed was a major factor in the loss.
    3. Free throw woes: Syracuse struggled from the free-throw line, shooting just 64% on the night. Missed free throws proved to be costly down the stretch, as the Orange missed several key opportunities to close the gap and potentially take the lead.
    4. Bright spots: Despite the loss, there were some bright spots for Syracuse. Buddy Boeheim had a strong performance, scoring 25 points and shooting 50% from three-point range. Marek Dolezaj also had a solid game, contributing 18 points and 9 rebounds. The team will need more consistent performances from key players like Boeheim and Dolezaj if they hope to turn things around and make a push in conference play.
