SZA and Keke Palmer’s Black female buddy comedy is refreshing.
In the new movie One of Them Days, it’s the first of the month, when the bills are due and tensions are higher than usual. BFF roommates Dreux (played by everyone’s favorite multihyphenate Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (R&B singer SZA, in her feature-film debut) find themselves strapped for cash, with nary a penny to pay their monthly rent—which is due by 6 p.m., or they’ll face eviction. Thus begins the epic day-in-the-life journey of two broke Black girls who comb through their neighborhood of South Central Los Angeles looking for ways to get cash fast.
One of Them Days is the first mainstream Black-women-led buddy comedy since 2017’s smash hit Girls Trip, and, reportedly, the first to center just a duo since 1997’s B.A.P.S. Produced by Insecure’s Issa Rae, written by Rap Sh!t showrunner and frequent Rae collaborator Syreeta Singleton, and directed by Lawrence Lamont, the movie delivers plenty of laughs, socioeconomic messages, and Black female sisterhood (without the accompaniment of the severe trauma plot). The Black female buddy comedy is back and fresher than ever, a reminder of just how much this genre has to offer.
Like many great comedies, such as Superbad or Friday, One of Them Days takes place over the course of one day. (The movie’s only fault is neglecting to include the best song ever made about this specific day.) When Alyssa’s crafty noncommittal boyfriend Keshawn (Joshua Neal) steals the girls’ rent money to finance the start of his T-shirt line (shirts that say “Cucci,” a play on the luxury brand Gucci), Dreux and Alyssa venture into the neighborhood of Baldwin Village, colloquially known as “the Jungle,” for opportunities to earn some quick money. However, not only are they pressed for time by their landlord, who is noted for skirting legal rental practices, but Dreux also has to make it to a hopefully life-changing interview for a big promotion—and, to top it all off, the girls are being hunted by a neighborhood bully.
Slapsticky hijinks, dick jokes, and comedic linchpins found in any movie about the hood—public brawls, neighborhood tough guys, someone coming in and stealing something the protagonists worked hard to get—ensue. However, while the movie’s comedy tends toward the profane, the issues that set up the punch lines in One of Them Days are very real. The duo gets rejected from a loan bank because of their abysmal credit; Dreux, in a bid for a quick buck, gives too much blood, which hilariously ends up all over the donation center; Alyssa steals a pair of Air Jordans hanging on a phone line, which lands them in hot water with the neighborhood’s crime boss. When comedy legend Katt Williams shows up as Lucky, a loitering antiestablishment street preacher who warns the girls not to take a loan from the loan bank for fear of them getting trapped in a predatory cycle of debt, he becomes one of the best running gags in the movie, while also making a salient point about the very real predatory businesses that target residents of impoverished areas. The film takes a similar approach to the Village’s first white resident, Bethany (Maude Apatow), moving into a renovated apartment much nicer than the protagonists’ dilapidated unit—a funny, yet trenchant, portrayal of gentrification and landlords’ exploitative practices pushing out long-standing tenants in favor of wealthier, often white, fresh blood.
But One of Them Days is more about how people survive than just the widespread injustices they live with. The laughs might be based on how societal structures keep Black people down, but the movie itself is about how Black women build community and lift each other up. Elle’s Keyaira Kelly aptly calls One of Them Days a “love letter to regular, degular Black girls”—and this is accomplished on many fronts, from the way the costuming, hair, and makeup choices simultaneously enhance the film’s comedy and the effortless beauty of its stars, to the way the girls’ faith in each other overrides and outlives any frustrations they have with each other. Most buddy comedies show a temporary falling-out between the lead characters as the central conflict comes to a head. One of Them Days is no different in that regard, but the thing this movie understands about being a Black woman is that there is an unshakable faith in what you know your fellow Black women to be capable of. Black women are the first ones to recognize each other’s worth; fittingly, although Dreux and Alyssa’s frustrations with each other mount as the day goes on, they never discount one another.
It makes sense that this long-overdue addition to the scant canon of Black female buddy comedies comes to us by way of Issa Rae, who is widely credited with leading the charge in bringing stories about Black womanhood to the screen, big and small. Rae’s production company and her extensive network might also be to thank for some great cameos from Black comedy greats like Abbott Elementary’s Janelle James, Get Out’s Lil Rel Howery, comedian and TV writer Dewayne Perkins, A Black Lady Sketch Show’s Gabrielle Dennis, and more. There’s nothing wrong with a well-crafted Black drama—last year’s standout films Nickel Boys and Hard Truths are evidence enough of this. But One of Them Days is a welcome reminder that there’s room for many kinds of movies in Black cinema—and some of them can even show four-time Grammy Award–winning musician SZA getting electrocuted by climbing up a telephone pole.
SZA and Keke Palmer’s Black female buddy comedy is refreshingIn a world where Black women are often portrayed in stereotypical, one-dimensional roles, it’s refreshing to see a film that showcases the complexity, humor, and friendship between two Black women. SZA and Keke Palmer’s upcoming buddy comedy promises to do just that.
The film, which has yet to be titled, will follow the hilarious misadventures of two best friends as they navigate life, love, and everything in between. With SZA’s soulful charm and Palmer’s comedic timing, this dynamic duo is sure to bring a fresh perspective to the buddy comedy genre.
What sets this film apart is its focus on the friendship between two Black women. Too often, Black women are pitted against each other or reduced to side characters in films. SZA and Palmer’s film will show that Black women can be funny, relatable, and supportive of each other in a way that is rarely seen on screen.
Overall, SZA and Keke Palmer’s Black female buddy comedy is a much-needed breath of fresh air in Hollywood. It’s time for Black women to be at the forefront of their own stories, and this film is a step in the right direction. Keep an eye out for this exciting project, as it’s sure to be a hit!

Super Bowl LIX is shaping up to be one for the books.
Kendrick Lamar was announced as the halftime headliner for Feb. 9’s game back in September. On Thursday, official halftime show sponsor Apple Music revealed via a cheeky teaser trailer for the performance that Grammy winner and frequent Lamar collaborator SZA will join the rapper on stage at New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome.
In the clip, Lamar paces around a greyscale football field, idly chatting on the phone with a friend. “This field a lot bigger than what it looks,” he remarks. Unbeknownst to the Compton-born musician, SZA creeps up behind him, shouldering a sloshing watercooler. She then dumps the sparkling blue, Gatorade-like contents of the cooler onto Lamar with a mischievous grin.
This is Lamar’s first time headlining a Super Bowl halftime show, but it isn’t his first time performing in one. He appeared as a special guest during Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre‘s 2022 West Coast-themed Super Bowl spectacle. He and SZA also aren’t the only announced performers.

The NFL has tapped four Louisiana natives to fill out the night’s festivities: jazz singer and multi-instrumentalist Jon Batiste will perform the national anthem; Christian singer Lauren Daigle and jazz musician Trombone Shorty will perform “America the Beautiful”; and R&B legend Ledisi will perform “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
There are likely plenty of surprise guests to come, but for now, here’s the full slate of announced performers set for the 2025 Super Bowl.

Kendrick Lamar had one of the biggest years of his career in 2024. He achieved a resounding victory over Drake in one of the most vicious rap battles in the genre’s history, released a song that stayed at the top of the charts for months and that’s now led him to multiple Grammy nominations, and he released his sixth critically-acclaimed album, GNX, in November. Headlining the Super Bowl halftime show is as much an auspicious start to the new year as it is a victory lap for the decorated rapper and musician.
“Rap music is still the most impactful genre to date,” Lamar said in a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly in September. “And I’ll be there to remind the world why. They got the right one.”
In a video coinciding with the Sept. announcement, Lamar stands before a massive American flag, feeding footballs into a throwing machine. “My name is Kendrick Lamar, and I’ll be performing at Super Bowl LIX. Will you be pulling up? I hope so,” he says to camera.

If Kendrick had a stellar year, SZA’s 2024 was super-galactic. The St. Louis-born musician born Solána Imani Rowe spent the year touring her acclaimed, Grammy-winning album SOS, which won her three Grammys. She released the deluxe version of that album, titled Lana, complete with a music video starring Ben Stiller. She also geared up for her acting debut in the Issa Rae-penned, Keke Palmer-costarring One of Them Days, which took the No. 2 spot at the MLK weekend domestic box office.
She and Kendrick also maximized their joint slay threefold, collaborating on three songs across their respective new albums (“gloria,” “luther,” and “30 for 30”), announcing the joint-headlining “Grand National Tour,” and, in February, taking the Super Bowl by storm together.

Another Super Bowl performer plucked straight from the 2024 Grammys (six nominations, but sadly no wins), Jon Batiste has been selected for the distinguished honor of performing the national anthem at Super Bowl LIX. Batiste succeeds American sweetheart, The Voice coach, and noted survivor Reba McEntire , who sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at last year’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas.
Batiste was born and raised in New Orleans, and belongs to a locally-revered family of jazz greats, including Milton Batiste, a former trumpeter in the Olympia Brass Band, and Lionel Batiste, the former assistant leader of the Treme Brass Band. His first album, released when he was only 17, is called Times in New Orleans. Batiste launched his first solo concert tour in 2024, dubbed “The Uneasy Tour.” His Super Bowl performance will be accompanied in American Sign Language (ASL) by the actress Stephanie Nogueras.
Ledisi

Like Batiste, R&B mainstay and Grammy-winning singer Ledisi was born and raised in New Orleans. She also hails from an influential family in the local jazz scene, and began singing in the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra when she was only eight. She’s gone on to release 11 albums, win major industry awards, tour the world with her band, and earn her spot as one of the greatest vocalists in the history of the genre, alongside Patti Labelle, with whom she starred in the documentary American Soul, and Mahalia Jackson, who she’s appeared on screen as twice, in Ava DuVernay’s Selma and Remember Me: The Mahalia Jackson Story.
Ledisi has been tapped by the NFL to perform the song “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” Colloquially known as the “Black national anthem,” the song was written by author and NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson in 1900, but was taken up as a rallying cry during the Civil Rights movement.

Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews is another New Orleans native. The world-touring trombonist has been performing since the age of four when he made his debut at the city’s annual Jazz Fest accompanying Bo Diddley. Shorty attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts with Batiste. The two will reunite at Super Bowl LIX, but Shorty is performing with the Christian recording artist Lauren Daigle, who will sing “America the Beautiful.”
Lauren Daigle

Lauren Daigle is the final Louisianian in the announced group of Super Bowl LIX performers. Born in Lake Charles and raised in Lafayette, Daigle rose to prominence in 2015, when her debut album, How Can It Be, topped Billboard’s Christian albums chart. She’s since become one of the most successful contemporary Christian recording artists in America, with two Grammy awards. She will sing “America the Beautiful” during the Super Bowl pregame lineup, accompanied by Trombone Shorty.
Super Bowl LIX airs on Sunday, Feb. 9 on Fox and streams on Fubo and the Fox Sports app. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT, with the halftime show likely to begin between 8 and 8:30 p.m. ET.

‘One of Them Days’ Review: Keke Palmer and SZA on a Mad Dash for Cash
The joyous comedy “One of Them Days” is one of those flicks that traces a madcap day in the lives of its protagonists, the broke but bubbly best friends Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA). It’s the first of the month, meaning rent is due for the ramshackle apartment they share in Los Angeles. If only Alyssa hadn’t entrusted the money to her freeloading boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal).
Borrowing from slacker and stoner comedies, “One of Them Days” becomes a ticking-clock quest for cash, complete with periodic freeze frames announcing how many hours remain before the women’s eviction. But the movie’s big achievement lies in how rarely it lapses into gross-out or injury-inflicting gags. (Shockingly for a comedy of this type, drugs hardly appear.) An early pratfall involving a faulty dishwasher proves a red herring; the director Lawrence Lamont and the screenwriter Syreeta Singleton find their best humor on the character level, in clever dialogue and sharp line deliveries from the entire ensemble.
Genuine emotion attends the humor. As sidekicks, Dreux and Alyssa share a value system, vocabulary and hearty appreciation for fun. More deeply, their bond is bolstered by an unwavering belief in one another’s talents and worth. Lamont and Singleton effortlessly mix the silly with the sincere, and although “One of Them Days” favors razzing over heart-to-hearts, our belief in this pairing never wavers. For that, hats off to SZA and especially Palmer, who lights up the screen with starry zeal.
One of Them Days
Rated R for language and sex-positive humor. Running time: 1 hours 37 minutes. In theaters.
In the new film “One of Them Days,” Keke Palmer and SZA team up for a wild and unpredictable adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat. The story follows two best friends who find themselves in desperate need of cash and decide to take matters into their own hands by pulling off a series of daring heists.Palmer and SZA deliver stellar performances as the charismatic and resourceful duo, bringing a perfect balance of humor and heart to their characters. Their on-screen chemistry is palpable, making their friendship feel authentic and relatable.
The action-packed plot keeps you guessing at every turn, as the two friends navigate through a series of dangerous situations and close calls. The film’s pacing is fast and exhilarating, with plenty of twists and turns to keep you engaged from start to finish.
But what truly sets “One of Them Days” apart is its unique blend of comedy and drama. The film manages to seamlessly weave moments of light-hearted humor with more serious themes, creating a nuanced and well-rounded story that will leave you both laughing and on the edge of your seat.
Overall, “One of Them Days” is a must-see film that showcases the talents of both Keke Palmer and SZA. With its thrilling action sequences, heartfelt performances, and unexpected twists, this movie is sure to keep you entertained from beginning to end. Don’t miss out on this wild and unpredictable ride!

But they should.
Photo: TriStar Pictures/Everett CollectionIs pot becoming too passé for comedy? The thought occurred to me while watching One of Them Days, a likable buddy movie that has the exact contours and shaggy charm of a stoner comedy without ever getting around to partaking. Like Craig and Smokey, Jesse and Chester, and Harold and Kumar before them, Dreux (Keke Palmer) and Alyssa (SZA) are a pair of genial underdogs with a seemingly straightforward task — scraping together $1,500 for rent by the end of the day — that becomes an excuse for an outrageous set of adventures. It’s not that the longtime roommates and besties seem like they’d be opposed to kicking back in the company of Mary Jane, but between Dreux’s anxiety over an upcoming job interview; Alyssa’s freeloading boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal); and the nine hours they have to avoid eviction, the pair just don’t have the luxury of getting high. Also, the mild disreputability of weed is gone, at least in California, where it has been legal for nearly a decade, sold in Apple Store–style emporiums to overwhelmed moms in search of sleep aids and wellness bros looking to microdose. Like the crumbling Baldwin Village apartment complex Dreux and Alyssa live in, weed is getting gentrified, and the characters don’t need it as common ground. Their bond is based on other things, like shared history, affection, and a deep familiarity with economic insecurity.
Rather than reveling in slackerdom, the characters in One of Them Days are desperate to get just the slightest bit ahead and escape the paycheck-to-paycheck grind, a possibility that keeps eluding them despite Dreux’s plans and Alyssa’s manifesting. It’s a testament to the film, which was written by Rap Sh!t showrunner Syreeta Singleton and directed by Lawrence Lamont, that it’s able to balance the exhaustion its characters feel with the goofiness of the episodes they find themselves in. Really, it’s a testament to the cast, an absurd parade of funny people ranging from comedians like Katt Williams and Lil Rel Howery to relative newcomers like Aziza Scott, who steals the show as local villainess Berniece. As Alyssa, an artist who falls somewhere between free spirit and flake, SZA eases into her first acting role like someone who has been doing this all along. With her voluptuous form and mermaid mane, she looks like a doodle of sensual satisfaction when Dreux exasperatedly finds her sprawled in bed, having ended up there with Keshawn when she was supposed to be talking to him about moving out. And as the striver Dreux, who has been waiting tables during the night shift at Norms after failing to finish her business degree, Palmer makes good use of a charisma that could power whole city blocks.
Honestly, watching One of Them Days, you start to wonder why Palmer isn’t one of the biggest stars in the world by now, though part of the problem is that she’s a creature of comedy, and studios barely make them anymore. Even when the writing and pacing falls slack in this one, as it definitely does on occasion, she wrings laughs out of scenes with screwball physicality and surprising line readings. She makes hay out of a gasped-out “He knew how to clean this whole time!” when discovering that Keshawn has absconded with his sneaker collection and what was meant to be their rent money. She turns a run-in with her crush, Maniac (Patrick Cage), in her neighbor’s unofficial corner store into a masterfully choreographed bit of lustful awkwardness. Dreux and Alyssa have what looks like a familiar dynamic: Dreux the uptight one in search of control, Alyssa the loosey-goosey one urging her friend to worry less. When the film begins, it invites you to wonder whether Alyssa, whose poor choices range from being dickmatized enough to trust Keshawn with rent to taking a pair of power-line sneakers belonging to a local gangster, is holding Dreux back. But by the end, Alyssa’s woo-woo outlook seems as reasonable as Dreux’s more traditional attempts to get ahead, when the game is so rigged that every wrong move seems to incur a lifetime penalty.
Among the stops on Dreux and Alyssa’s journey are a blood bank where a stripper turned nurse played by Janelle James lets an increasingly gray Dreux donate extra pints and a payday-loan place that touts a 1,900.5 percent APR rate. But the key location is the apartment complex, which may be run by a hard-ass landlord named Uche (Rizi Timane) with no patience for due process, and which may shed chunks of ceiling plaster whenever a door gets slammed, but which is home to a long-term community the movie treats with wry affection. When the place gets its inaugural white girl, Bethany, played with perky obliviousness by Maude Apatow, the residents gather to take in her sweet smile and reactive rescue dog with the resignation of people who are well aware that she represents the beginning of the end. She may not be the enemy herself, but she comes from a plane of existence where everyone has a laptop job, their rental units have already been renovated, and no one laughs in their face upon the sight of their credit score, the way a loan admin played by the excellent Keyla Monterroso Mejia does upon pulling up Dreux’s. Dreux and Alyssa, on the other hand, have to extract their happy ending by facing possible death. They get it, of course. This is the kind of comedy that wants its scrappy heroes, stoned or not, to succeed — though when Dreux and Alyssa do, they opt to celebrate with a cocktail.
SZA Is a Natural in Her First FilmR&B singer SZA has made her big screen debut in the upcoming film “Babylon,” and critics are already raving about her performance. Known for her soulful voice and powerful lyrics, SZA proves that she is just as talented on the silver screen as she is in the recording studio.
In “Babylon,” SZA plays the role of a struggling artist trying to make it in the cutthroat world of Hollywood. Her portrayal is raw, vulnerable, and incredibly authentic, drawing audiences in with every scene she is in. #SZA #Natural #FilmKeke Palmer and SZA Compliment Each Other’s Talents as ‘N…
SZA and Keke Palmer are hyping each other up less than a month before the debut of their upcoming film, One of Them Days.
On Thursday (Dec. 26), the costars interacted on X after SZA called Palmer “the most talented person” she’s ever met. “No funny shit,” she continued. “Kinda scary but also inspiring .. not actually sure she’s human. Need more recon. Will report back soon.”
But before the four-time Grammy winner could “report back,” Palmer responded, writing, “If I’m not human, neither are you superstar.”
The quick chat was admired by Palmer and SZA fans who are looking forward to the women reconnecting onscreen, nearly two years after they guest-starred on an episode of Saturday Night Live together. With One of Them Days being produced by Issa Rae and directed by Lawrence Lamont, Palmer and SZA also made cameos on Rae’s former HBO series, Insecure.
In a Teen Vogue feature, SZA credited Palmer with helping her get acclimated in her first movie role.
“When I got on camera it was spooky, but Keke literally ushered me through,” the “Snooze” singer-songwriter said.
Palmer also referenced their popular SNL gif as bringing their buddy-comedy into fruition. “Like, I see that GIF used every single day and that was the beginning of our budding platonic romance that has continued to develop over time,” Palmer said. “Getting this opportunity to do this movie with her has been an unbelievable journey.”
One of Them Days comes to theaters on Jan. 17, 2025.

“I think theatrical is extremely special and it’s also its own marketing tool,” Rae says. “Going to the theater is a special event. It’s also a friendship event. You want to feel like you’re going for a reason, and you want to be guaranteed that it’s going to be good. The theatrical release shows a belief in this project.”
It’s also the realization of a longtime goal for Keke Palmer, who grew up watching Will Smith and Eddie Murphy star in a slew of buddy comedies over the years; Lethal Weapon, she says, was a favorite of her mom’s growing up.

“It was a dream because I’m also trying to be like, ‘Women can be that, too,’” says Palmer. Female buddy films have been few and far between since the late 2010s, and are even more sparse when it comes to Black female buddy films. “It’s not even like I’m trying to force it. It’s just like, give us a chance to show you motherf*ckers what we can do.”
“Even with Nope, my opportunity to do comedy there, but then also action and drama and in the end being able to slay the dragon, I felt like that was such a great opportunity for people to allow women to have characters that are really only usually given to men,” Palmer adds. “I think it’s the same thing with this. We are not afraid to get silly, not afraid to get a little nasty, not afraid to get a little tough when we have to be. And that’s the range I think that we deserve to see.”
SZA and Keke Palmer have teamed up for a new track titled “One of Them Days,” and it’s a tribute to Black buddy comedies, South LA, and the iconic film “Friday.”The song’s upbeat and nostalgic vibe immediately transports listeners to the streets of South LA, where the film “Friday” was set. The lyrics speak to the everyday struggles and triumphs of life in the neighborhood, while also celebrating the strong bonds of friendship that are a common theme in Black buddy comedies.
SZA and Keke Palmer’s chemistry on the track is undeniable, with their smooth vocals blending seamlessly over the laid-back beat. The song is a perfect mix of soulful melodies and catchy hooks, making it an instant hit for fans of both artists.
In an exclusive interview, SZA and Keke Palmer shared their inspiration behind the track, revealing that they wanted to pay homage to the films and music that have influenced them throughout their careers. They also expressed their love for the sense of community and camaraderie that is often depicted in Black buddy comedies, and how they wanted to capture that same spirit in “One of Them Days.”
Overall, “One of Them Days” is a fun and feel-good track that showcases SZA and Keke Palmer’s undeniable talent and chemistry. It’s a must-listen for fans of both artists, as well as anyone who appreciates a good tribute to classic Black cinema.
