“This Is Not T20 Or A Party”: Jasprit Bumrah’s Champions Trophy Replacement Sent Big Warning

While Team India appear to have hit their stride at the right time just ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025 – having battered England 3-0 at home in an ODI series – they will still face the problem of having to replace Jasprit Bumrah during the main tournament. Bumrah, unquestionably India’s pace spearhead, has not been able to recover from a back issue in time for the tournament. Former England coach David ‘Bumble’ Lloyd stated that left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, set to replace Bumrah in India’s playing XI, will have to significantly adjust from T20I cricket to ODI cricket.

“It’s a great opportunity for someone to come in, someone who wouldn’t make the team. But you can’t get away from the fact that he (Bumrah) is the best bowler in the world, and if he isn’t playing for you, you’ve got a problem” said Lloyd, speaking on TalkSport Cricket.

Arshdeep Singh is India’s highest-ever T20I wicket-taker, but has only played nine ODIs till date. Lloyd mentioned that shifting from T20Is to ODIs would be a big change.

“Massive difference – four overs to 10. If you’re the opposition, test him out; really get into him,” Lloyd said.

“‘This is not T20 mate, this is not a little party, you’ve got to come back and come back again’, that will be something he won’t be used to,” Lloyd said.

Arshdeep is one of three pacers selected by Team India for the Champions Trophy 2025, alongside the experienced Mohammed Shami and the recently-debuted Harshit Rana. India went with as many as five spinners in their squad, keeping in mind the conditions in Dubai and the short duration of the tournament.

Arshdeep has fared fairly well in his nine ODIs so far for India, having picked up 14 wickets at an average of 23.

However, Arshdeep played just a solitary game in the three-match ODI series against England, with Shami playing two and Rana playing all three.

The absence of Bumrah – who was named the ICC Cricketer of the Year for 2024 – will surely be felt by India. The 31-year-old has won the ‘Player of the Tournament’ at the T20 World Cup 2024 and the ‘Player of the Series’ at the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and appeared in the best form of his career heading into the Champions Trophy.

India are likely to go with two frontline seamers in their playing XI at the Champions Trophy, with all-rounder Hardik Pandya being the third seam option.

    Topics mentioned in this article

Indian cricket fans were left shocked and disappointed when it was announced that star fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah would be missing the upcoming Champions Trophy due to injury. However, his replacement, an up-and-coming young bowler, has sent a big warning to all those who may underestimate him.

In a recent interview, the new addition to the Indian squad made it clear that he is not here to play T20 cricket or attend parties. He emphasized the importance of the Champions Trophy and the seriousness with which he takes his role in the team.

With Bumrah’s absence, this young bowler has big shoes to fill, but it seems like he is more than ready for the challenge. As he prepares to take on some of the best teams in the world, he is determined to prove his worth and make a name for himself on the international stage.

So, to all those who may doubt him or think that he is just a temporary replacement, beware. This is not T20 or a party – this is the Champions Trophy, and this bowler is here to make a statement. Let’s see what he can bring to the table and how he can help India in their quest for glory.

NEW DELHI: India stormed to a dominant nine-wicket victory over South Africa to successfully defend their Women’s U19 T20 World Cup title on Sunday at the JB Marks Oval, Kuala Lumpur.
Having won the inaugural edition back in 2023, the Asian side displayed their superiority in all departments, comfortably chasing down a modest target of 83.

What Impressed You the Most About India’s Women’s U19 T20 World Cup Win?

After a clinical bowling performance restricted South Africa to 82 all out in 20 overs, India’s batters made light work of the chase.

Despite losing Kamalini Gunalan early for 8, Gongadi Trisha (44 not out off 33) and Sanika Chalke (26 not out off 22) guided India home in just 11.2 overs, sealing back-to-back U19 World Cup victories.

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa endured a nightmare start, losing Simone Lourens for a duck in the opening over.
Jemma Botha (16) offered some early resistance, but wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Captain Kayla Reyneke and wicketkeeper Karabo Meso struggled to steady the innings as India’s bowlers kept them under pressure.

Mieke van Voorst (23 off 18) and Fay Cowling (15 off 20) provided brief moments of hope, but with no substantial partnerships, South Africa crumbled to 82 all out in 20 overs.

What does Shubman Gill’s horoscope say about his captaincy future

Gongadi Trisha (3/15) was the standout performer, dismantling the middle order with her disciplined spell. Parunika Sisodia (2/6) and Aayushi Shukla (2/9) provided key breakthroughs, while Vaishnavi Sharma (2/23) mopped up the tail, ensuring South Africa never got going.

Chasing a small target, India started positively despite an early setback when Kamalini Gunalan fell for 8. However, Trisha and Chalke ensured there were no further hiccups, playing with authority and composure.
Trisha’s 44-run knock, laced with eight boundaries, was the highlight of the chase.

India put on a dominant display in the final of the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup, crushing South Africa by nine wickets to successfully defend their title. The young Indian team showed their class with both bat and ball, overpowering their opponents in all departments.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, India’s bowlers were on top form, restricting South Africa to just 97 runs in their allotted 20 overs. The spinners were particularly effective, with Poonam Yadav picking up three wickets and keeping the South African batters in check.

In response, India chased down the target with ease, losing just one wicket in the process. Opener Shafali Verma was once again the star of the show, scoring a quickfire 50 to lead India to victory.

This win marks India’s second consecutive U19 Women’s T20 World Cup title, showcasing the depth of talent in the country’s women’s cricket. Congratulations to the Indian team on their fantastic performance and well-deserved victory! #U19WomensT20WorldCup #India #Cricket #Champions

  • Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup final: India thrash South Africa to defend title

India have won the Under-19 T20 World Cup after storming to a nine-wicket victory over South Africa in the final.

Having bowled South Africa out for 82, India needed just 11.2 overs to knock off the runs in Kuala Lumpur.

Gongadi Trisha was the standout performer for India, taking 3-15 with the ball before smashing an unbeaten 44 from 33 balls in the chase.

South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first but were soon in trouble as they slipped to 20-3 in the powerplay and never recovered.

Runs were hard to come by as India’s spinners took hold and, with wickets falling at regular intervals, the Proteas’ progress was slow before they were eventually bowled out from the last ball of the innings.

There were no such problems for India as Trisha quickly put them in control with a flurry of early boundaries.

The 19-year-old already looks a star of the future and ends as the tournament’s leading run-scorer with 309 in seven matches, some 133 runs ahead of England’s Davina Perrin in second.

Sanika Chalke was left to hit the winning boundary two balls into the 12th over to start the celebrations for India, who also won the inaugural tournament in 2023.

In a thrilling final match of the Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup, India showcased their dominance by thrashing South Africa to defend their title. The Indian team put on a stellar performance, both with the bat and ball, to secure a convincing victory.

Batting first, India posted a formidable total, thanks to some brilliant batting from their top order. The openers got off to a flying start and set the tone for the innings, with the middle order also chipping in with valuable contributions. South Africa’s bowlers struggled to contain the Indian batters, as they smashed boundaries all around the park.

In reply, South Africa never really got going, as the Indian bowlers kept the pressure on with some tight bowling and regular breakthroughs. The spinners were particularly impressive, picking up crucial wickets and restricting the scoring rate. In the end, South Africa fell well short of the target, handing India a comprehensive victory.

The win not only sees India retain their title but also highlights the incredible talent and potential of the young players in the team. Congratulations to the Indian team on their impressive performance and well-deserved victory in the Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup final.

    Key events

The eagle eyed amongst you will have spotted that Shivam Dube is playing today, less than 48 hours after failing that concussion test. Chicanery afoot! No doubt that is what prompted Buttler to list his subs bench. Bit of neeeeedle today at the Wankhede I reckon.

“I caught you listing out your impact subs…”

    Share

    Updated at

There’s a pointed and quite funny moment at the toss as Jos Buttler insists on listing his four impact subs with a bit of a twinkle in his eye and the beginnings of a smirk on his face.

Is this a sign of the new mischievous/larky Buttler? He did say before the series that he’d been practicing smiling in the mirror. Seriously. Give him a a few more matches and he’ll be doing witty little monologues like ‘Cinch’ slathered Tony Hancock.

    Teams:

India: Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohammed Shami, Varun Chakravarthy.

England: Phil Salt (wk), Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler (c), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

Mark Wood comes back in for Saqib Mahmood for England despite the latter impressing in the last match and Mohammed Shami replaces Arshdeep Singh for India.

England win the toss… and will bowl!

Joss Buttler calls the coin correctly at the toss as Ravi Shastri’s voice echoes around the stadium like a sonic boom. Buttler says he’s excited for the match, the crowd should be large and loud and they hope there’s a bit of dew around early doors to get the ball zipping.

India captain Suryakumar Yadav says he wanted to bat first so everybody is happy. Nice little mental flex from Sky there. Teams news incoming!

    Preamble

    James Wallace

    James Wallace

Hello and welcome to the fifth and final T20 of this series between India and England. Actually, excuse me whilst I take the afternoon off, I’m not feeling it. Here’s Rob Smyth to OBO in my place. He’s vastly more experienced at this stuff, has more stats and facts at his disposal than almost anyone, is a really quick typer and isn’t hungover/sleep deprived/racked with a perennial nag of existential ennui… you don’t mind do you? Over to you Rob!

I’m being facetious (but truthful about Rob) of course, in case you missed it there was some controversy in the last match as Shivam Dube was conked on the helmet whilst batting, prompting a concussion replacement for India, Harshit Rana came in for his Twenty20 international debut during the England innings. Now, Rana is a far better bowler than Dube, this was no ‘like-for-like change’, as the rules state.

Jos Buttler didn’t go full sour grapes after the match, England should have won the match regardless and squandered an opportunity to tie the series and set up a shootout at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai today, but he made his feelings clear:

It’s not a like-for-like replacement, we don’t agree with that…either Shivam Dube has put on about 25mph with the ball or Harshit has really improved his batting. It’s part of the game. I still think we should have gone on to win the match. But we disagree with the decision. We’ll ask Javagal [Srinath, the match referee] some questions just to get some clarity around it.”

So the series might be gone but there’ll be a bit of frisson and an England side looking to prove a point coming up against and Indian side wanting to put any questions about the validity of their series win to bed with a 4-1 victory overall.

I’m afraid you are stuck with me, Jim here in a sunny south London (i’m not hungover… promise). Play begins at 1.30pm GMT – a little over half an hour’s time. I’ll be back imminently with news of the teams and toss.

India and England are set to face off in the fifth men’s T20 cricket international match, and the excitement is palpable. Both teams have shown remarkable skills and determination throughout the series, making this final match a showdown not to be missed.

The series has been closely contested so far, with both teams showcasing their strengths and weaknesses. India will be looking to make a statement with a strong performance in the final match, while England will be aiming to finish the series on a high note.

The match promises to be a thrilling encounter, with both teams fielding their best players and giving it their all to secure a victory. Fans can expect to see some intense competition, brilliant batting, and exceptional bowling as the two teams battle it out on the field.

    Key events

The square boundaries are relatively short in Pune, so it’ll be interesting to see whether England stick with the heavy length they bowled so successfully in Rajkot.

    Team news

Jacob Bethell and Saqib Mahmood come into the England team in place of Jamie Smith and Mark Wood.

India make three changes: Arshdeep Singh, who was rested in the third T20I, Rinku Singh and Shivam Dube are preferred to Mohammed Shami, Dhruv Jurel and Washington Sundar.

India Samson (wk), Abhishek, Varma, Suryakumar (c), Hardik, Dube, Rinku, Axar, Arshdeep, Bishnoi, Chakravarthy.

England Salt (wk), Duckett, Buttler (c), Brook, Livingstone, Bethell, Overton, Carse, Archer, Rashid, Saqib.

England win the toss and bowl

Jos Buttler has called correctly for the first time on tour, which means England will chase for the first time in the series.

Ben Duckett on England’s win in Rajkot

It’s a big moment for this team because it could have gone a different way. Credit to the guys for doing exactly what [Brendon McCullum] wants us to go and do. It’s to entertain. At times it’s not going to work, and that’s fine. But we could easily be 2-1 up in the series if things had gone a little bit better for us at the back end of the second game.

    Preamble

Hello and welcome to episode four of Bazball Nights, England’s new white-ball spin-off. So far it’s been great fun, with episodes devoted to mystery spin, raw pace and tediously extended metaphors and canny left-arm seam.

England won superbly in Rajkot to keep the series alive, when their counter-intuitive decision to pick four genuinely quick bowlers paid off; another win today would set up a series decider at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday. And even if they lose, the cricket will never, ever be dull.

HALF centuries from captain Hayley Matthews and Deandra Dottin propelled West Indies women to a seven-wicket win over Bangladesh in the opening T20 match of a three-match series at Warner Park in Basseterre, St Kitts, on January 27.

Dottin was the star of the show, belting seven sixes in a brutal innings.

West Indies made the run chase look relatively simple, getting to 145/2 in 16.5 overs. Matthews struck seven fours in her innings of 60 not out off 54 balls and Dottin cleared the rope regularly in a whirlwind knock of 51 not out off just 22 deliveries.

Earlier in the innings, Qiana Joseph helped build a solid platform for West Indies, hitting 29 off 21 in a 63-run opening partnership with Matthews.

Fahima Khatun was the only successful bowler for Bangladesh, taking 2/15 in three overs.

    >

Batting first, Bangladesh posted 144/3 in their 20 overs with Nigar Sultana Joty showing form with an unbeaten 53 off 40 balls (five fours, two sixes) and Sharmin Akter contributing 37 off 41.

The second match will be played on January 29 from 6 pm at Warner Park.

    Summarised scores:

BANGLADESH 144/3 (20 overs) (Nigar Sultana Joty 53 not out, Sharmin Akter 37; Cherry-Ann Fraser 1/23) vs WEST INDIES 145/2 ( (Hayley Matthews 60 not out, Deandra Dottin 51 not out, Qiana Joseph 29; Fahima Khatun 2/15). West Indies won by seven wickets.

In a stunning display of power hitting, West Indies batsman Deandra Dottin smashed seven sixes to lead her team to a convincing T20 victory over Bangladesh.

Dottin’s explosive innings saw her score 70 runs off just 22 balls, including seven towering sixes that left the opposition bowlers helpless. Her onslaught helped West Indies post a formidable total of 190/5 in their 20 overs.

In response, Bangladesh struggled to keep up with the required run rate and eventually fell short, finishing on 150/8.

Dottin’s performance was a reminder of her incredible talent and ability to change the course of a game single-handedly. Her aggressive approach and fearless strokeplay make her a dangerous player in the T20 format.

With this victory, West Indies have taken an early lead in the series and will look to carry the momentum forward in the remaining matches. Dottin’s heroics have certainly set the tone for an exciting series ahead.

  • India v England: Jamie Smith retained for third T20 in Chennai

Batter Jamie Smith has been retained in an unchanged England team for the third T20 against India in Rajkot on Tuesday.

Smith made 22 from 12 balls on his T20 international debut in Saturday’s two-wicket defeat in the second match of the series.

He had come into the England side for all-rounder Jacob Bethell, who missed out through illness but was well enough to train on Monday.

England are 2-0 down in the five-match series.

“You’ve got to believe, haven’t you?” said England fast bowler Mark Wood.

“It’s no good sitting there saying ‘that’s it’. There are three games to play, three chances of a win.”

Wood, 35, has played in both matches of the series so far after being sidelined since August with a stress fracture in his elbow.

In the 5.5 overs he has bowled across the series, Wood has taken one wicket and leaked runs at an economy of 8.83 per over.

“I’ve felt a little bit ‘hitty-missy’,” he said. “I’ve done a couple of good things, it’s great that my pace is up there, but maybe my accuracy at time hasn’t been quite where I wanted it.

“When I haven’t played since August, that’s pretty much expected. Hopefully the more I play, the better I get.”

England team: Ben Duckett, Phil Salt (wicketkeeper), Jos Buttler (captain), Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone, Jamie Smith, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.

In a surprising move, Jamie Smith has been retained for the third T20 match between India and England in Chennai. The young wicketkeeper-batsman has impressed with his performance in the previous matches, earning him a spot in the playing XI once again.

Smith’s inclusion has raised a few eyebrows, especially with the experienced Jos Buttler waiting in the wings. However, the team management seems keen on giving the youngster more opportunities to showcase his talent on the international stage.

It will be interesting to see how Smith performs in the crucial third T20 match, as both teams look to gain the upper hand in the series. Will he be able to make a significant impact and help England secure a win, or will the pressure of the big stage get to him?
