  • DrinkWise game preview – Round 18: Wildcats v Taipans

The Taipans are bottom of the ladder but have won three of their last five games, including knocking off top-ranked Illawarra Hawks at home on Thursday night and again within the past month.

Rillie said it was important not to take the in-form Taipans lightly as the Wildcats hunt a sixth win in seven games.

“They’re definitely playing a better brand of basketball over the last couple of games. So we’d better not be disrespectful and just think we can show up,” Rillie said.

Rillie confirmed import Dylan Windler will miss a second straight game with an eye injury as the Wildcats take a cautious approach.

Speedster Tai Webster also remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

“We just want to make sure when he comes back, we have nothing to worry about moving forward,” Rillie said about Windler.

A win is crucial for the Wildcats given how tight the ladder is during the business end of the season.

Perth have four regular-season games remaining and current sit in fourth spot with a 15-10 record.

Just two wins separate the second-placed Sydney Kings (16-10) and fifth-placed South East Melbourne Phoenix (14-11), and face both in the final two home-and-away matches of NBL25.

Rillie backed his young bigs Izan Almansa and David Okwera to continue their starting roles, despite a career-high 33 points off the bench from Kristian Doolittle in Wednesday night’s loss to Melbourne United and 10 points and seven rebounds from Keanu Pinder.

“We can’t let one result cloud what we’ve been doing over the last couple of months. I’m not going to change. I’m very happy with Keanu Pinder and the way he is playing. I like the way our group is playing. We’re playing good basketball, our group is in a good spot what with where we are as a team. I’m very good with how everything is going,” Rillie said.

“The benefit is we started to find a really good groove as a team with those guys starting. I’m not a person that’s just going to change for change. We reward guys who play well together and do their job They’re comfortable and are doing great in their roles.”

Cotton produced his fourth consecutive 40-point haul in a row to strengthen his chances of winning a fifth Andrew Gaze Trophy.

The Wildcats outscored the Taipans 74-35 after half-time with Dylan Windler (18 points), Keanu Pinder (13) and Elijah Pepper (10) joining Cotton in double figures.

Pinder finished with a double-double against his former team.

    Cairns Taipans vs Illawarra Hawks

Thursday 7:30pm AEDT (Jan 23), Cairns Convention Centre

The Cairns Taipans are up against the Illawarra Hawks in what’s shaping up as a real mismatch. The Taipans are bottom of the ladder at 5-19, while the Hawks are flying high on top with a 17-8 record. Still, Cairns can take some confidence into this one—they caused the biggest shock of the season earlier this month, beating the Hawks in Wollongong 108-105. That win showed they can hang with the best, but with the Hawks in red-hot form and on a two-game win streak, this feels like a tall order for the home side.

The Taipans had a rough one last game, losing by 24 to the 36ers, but they’ve picked up two wins in their last five, which is something. Taran Armstrong’s been in great form, but there’s a big question mark over whether he’ll play with back soreness, and the signs aren’t looking good. Tanner Groves has been solid, while Rob Edwards has been up and down—he’s dropped 25+ points in three of his last five but can go quiet too. Sam Waardenburg, who’s having his best season, is in a bit of a slump right now, scoring just nine points across his last two games. The Taipans will need everything to click to pull off another upset.

On the other hand, the Hawks are on a roll. They’ve won four of their last five, and their last two games were blowout wins—smashing the Bullets by 34 and United by 22. Sam Froling has been dominant lately, while Trey Kell has been steady, though not scoring heaps in recent games. Losing Darius Days to a hamstring injury is a bit of a setback, but the Hawks have plenty of weapons and should handle it fine. They thumped the Taipans by 27 points back in September and will want to make sure there’s no repeat of that shock loss from earlier this month.

Honestly, it’s hard to see the Taipans pulling off another miracle here. The Hawks are in great form, and they’ll be out to prove a point after that unexpected loss to Cairns last time. If Armstrong doesn’t play, it makes things even tougher for the Taipans. The Hawks should be too strong and will likely cruise to their third straight win.

    Hawks -11.5

    $1.91 (1 Unit)

The Taipans will be facing off against the Hawks in Round 18 of NBL25, and it’s sure to be an exciting matchup. Both teams are fighting for a spot in the playoffs, so this game is crucial for their standings.

The Taipans have been on a bit of a hot streak lately, winning four of their last five games. They have a strong roster with players like Scott Machado and Cameron Oliver leading the way. The Hawks, on the other hand, have been struggling as of late and will be looking to bounce back with a win in this game.

In terms of predictions, I believe the Taipans will come out on top in this matchup. They have been playing well and have the momentum on their side. However, the Hawks are a talented team and shouldn’t be underestimated.

As for tips, keep an eye on the Taipans’ defense. If they can shut down the Hawks’ offense and limit their scoring opportunities, they will have a good chance of winning. Additionally, look for Machado and Oliver to have big games and lead the Taipans to victory.

Overall, this game is sure to be a close one, but I’m predicting a win for the Taipans. Don’t miss out on what is sure to be an intense and competitive matchup between these two teams.
