  • It Takes Two Dev’s Split Fiction Gets Trailer With Dune And Alice In Wonderland-Inspired Levels

A new trailer for the next EA Originals game, Split Fiction, has gone live and shows off more of the Hazelight-developed game in action. Narrated by game director Josef Fares, the gameplay trailer shows off two levels–one set in a sci-fi world, the other in a fantasy land–and how players will use unique co-op gameplay elements in each one to progress. For the sci-fi level, there are anti-gravity sections and bike chases to look forward to, while the fantasy level features shape-shifting gameplay mechanics.

The other big feature shown off in the Split Fiction video are Side Stories, optional one-off adventures that are hidden throughout the game’s levels. Discovering one and exploring it will transport players to even more worlds influenced by sci-fi and fantasy fiction, with some of the levels including outer space, an Alice in Wonderland-themed world, and a stage that looks heavily influenced by the recent Dune movies.

Developed by the studio behind the critically acclaimed It Takes Two, Split Fiction was first revealed at The Game Awards last year. A mandatory two-player game, Split Fiction lets you play as two would-be writers: Mio and Zoe. After the pair sign up to participate in a new publishing program, they find themselves transported to virtual recreations of their stories by a shady tech company and have to work together to escape before they lose their memories.

Split Fiction is set to launch for Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC on March 6, 2025, and preorders are now live for it. The great thing about the game is that it comes with a cross-play Friend Pass, allowing one user to invite a friend to join them even if they haven’t purchased Split Fiction.

Thanks to its cross-play design, it also doesn’t matter which of the three applicable platforms your pal is on either, as you’ll both be able to team up for a jaunt across futuristic and magical lands. 2025 has quite a few exciting co-op games on the horizon, and if you’re interested in seeing what else is coming out in this genre throughout the year, you can check out GameSpot’s list of the most-anticipated co-op games of the year.

Exciting news for fans of the popular co-op game It Takes Two! The developers at Hazelight Studios have just released a new trailer for their upcoming split fiction DLC, featuring levels inspired by Dune and Alice in Wonderland.

In this new DLC, players will be able to take on the roles of characters from these iconic stories as they navigate through beautifully crafted levels that pay homage to the worlds of Dune and Alice in Wonderland. From sandworms to tea parties, players can expect a unique and immersive experience that combines the best of both universes.

The trailer showcases stunning visuals, creative gameplay mechanics, and a glimpse into the captivating story that awaits players in this exciting new expansion. With its innovative split-screen co-op gameplay and engaging narrative, It Takes Two continues to push boundaries and deliver unforgettable gaming experiences.

  • Taylor Swift takes a step back from Blake Lively friendship

Taylor Swift takes a step back from Blake Lively friendship
Taylor Swift takes a step back from Blake Lively friendship

Taylor Swift might just take a break from her friendship with Blake Lively.

Reportedly, this decision comes amid the Gossip Girl alum’s lawsuit and legal battle against It Ends With Us co-star, Justin Baldoni.

The Lover crooner, according to a countersuit filed by the Jane The Virgin star, was present at one of the meetings that he had with Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, with the pop star’s attendance assumed as an “intimidation tactic.”

With that, the Eras Tour headliner was involved into the fierce legal battle, which is ongoing between the 41-year-old director and the 37-year-old actress.

The 400-million-dollar lawsuit by Baldoni, mentioned that Swift has showed up to the meeting to make him feel like he “needed to comply with Blake’s direction for the script.”

Further on, Lively also appeared to threaten the Five Feet Apart star, in a series of texts, where she referred to herself as the character Khaleesi from the famous Game of Thrones and referred to her husband and best friend as her “dragons.”

Over this, an insider reported to Daily Mail, “For the time being she is taking a step back from Blake because she doesn’t want to get tangled in this more than she already has – which is far more than she ever needed to be.”

“Her friends also think that Blake’s “I’m Khaleesi, and like her, I happen to have dragons” text to Justin was uncool and unnecessary because she was essentially used as an intimidation tactic. She was referred to as some kind of pet or possession,” they added.

The source continued, “Taylor shouldn’t even be involved in this at all. She was only going over to visit Blake and Ryan with the understanding that the meeting would be over.”

While a second source stated, “Taylor has politely backed away from it all. She is conscious of her own image and hates that she was even mentioned.”

Recently, there have been reports that Taylor Swift has decided to take a step back from her friendship with Blake Lively. The two stars have been close friends for years, often seen attending events together and sharing sweet moments on social media.

However, sources close to Swift have revealed that the singer is focusing on her own well-being and personal growth, which has led her to reevaluate some of her friendships. While Swift and Lively have not publicly commented on the situation, it seems that their busy schedules and different priorities have caused a rift in their friendship.

Fans of the two stars are saddened to hear about the potential distance between Swift and Lively, but ultimately understand that friendships can ebb and flow over time. Hopefully, this is just a temporary break and the two will be able to reconnect in the future.

  • Opinion | Trump Takes on Whistle-Blowers

In 2019, we represented an anonymous whistle-blower from the American intelligence community whose disclosures about President Trump’s attempt to coerce President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine led to his first impeachment. Our goals as lawyers were simple: to ensure that the truth came out and our client was safe from retaliation.

We worked within an inspector general system created by Congress to conduct independent investigations of malfeasance within government, one of the institutional guardrails put in place a half century ago in the wake of the Watergate scandal.

Even then, there were signs during our case that those guardrails were beginning to fracture under Mr. Trump’s sway. The White House’s attacks on our client, and on us, undermined an important system of checks and balances. President Trump subsequently dismissed five inspectors general, including the watchdog for the intelligence community, who had fulfilled his lawful obligations to protect our client at his own peril.

President Trump has now returned to the White House office far more knowledgeable about the inner workings of the government, with a list of grievances he is working through expeditiously.

On Friday night, in a bloodletting reminiscent of the Saturday Night Massacre, in which Richard Nixon ordered the dismissal of the Watergate special prosecutor and accepted the resignations of the attorney general and his deputy, Mr. Trump fired as many as 17 inspectors general. This action has sowed distrust and turmoil within the inspector general system and unfortunately has called into question the pathways that whistle-blowers will have available to them.

Congress created the inspector general posts in 1978 to allow for independent audits and investigations of government departments to guard against waste, fraud and abuse. The president has the power to appoint inspector generals in the major departments with Senate consent, and to fire them. But in this case, Mr. Trump terminated them without first giving Congress 30 days notice, nor, as he is required to do under a 2022 law, providing a “substantive rationale, including detailed and case-specific reasons” for the dismissals. It was a direct challenge not only to the system but to Congress.

The inspectors general he fired included many he appointed in his first term, and who, as customary, remained on the job during the Biden administration. The most reasonable explanation for Mr. Trump’s action is that he is seeking to install loyalists, which would knock the guardrails against government malfeasance clattering to the ground.

This should not have come as a surprise. Well over a year before Mr. Trump was sworn into office for his second term, he issued a video in which he vowed to upend the inspector general system as part of his effort to “dismantle the deep state and reclaim our democracy from Washington corruption.” If the firings hold up, they will give Mr. Trump carte blanche to install watchdogs faithful solely to him, not to the Constitution.

For many decades, the inspector general system has helped to ensure that government officials and agencies are held accountable within the bounds of the law. There has not been such a purge since Ronald Reagan fired 16 inspectors general on his first day in office in 1981. He then invited them to reapply for their jobs “in competition with other applicants” and subsequently reappointed five. Since then, inspector generals have kept their posts when a new president takes office, in deference to the nonpartisan nature of the jobs.

In recent years, inspectors general have found, among other things, that the F.B.I. mishandled allegations of sexual abuse by the former U.S.A. Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar and that billions in pandemic-related unemployment insurance funds were paid out improperly. The scope of their work is reflected in a report to Congress for the 2023 fiscal year that pointed to 2,200 audits, inspection and evaluation reports that year and 4,300 successful prosecutions.

Independent inspectors general provide a safe channel for whistle-blowers, whose complaints often include the raw material needed for audits, inspections and investigations. Without those whistle-blowers, it would be nearly impossible for the inspectors general to learn about problems as they arise and address them.

That, though, is the new reality that Mr. Trump and his policy advisers appear to want, and it is scaring federal employees and government contractors who know they are now being held to a new standard of loyalty, not legality. People who might previously have considered blowing the whistle are going to have to think much more carefully now, not least because they may no longer have a safe avenue through their inspector general office.

We hope Congress will take on Mr. Trump to assure the continued viability of the inspector general system. Outspoken supporters for whistle-blower protection and government transparency, such as Senator Charles Grassley, Republican of Iowa, and Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, should push their fellow lawmakers to intervene. With Congress controlled by Mr. Trump’s own Republican Party, we are not optimistic. Those of us who have worked within government systems of accountability and pursued whistle-blower cases are now trying to develop alternative paths of disclosure.

The voices of whistle-blowers must continue to be heard. And if the federal government will no longer provide them a haven, then private and nonprofit legal groups must step up to protect them in every way possible.

Mark S. Zaid is a lawyer who focuses on national security, speech and government accountability. Andrew P. Bakaj is the chief legal counsel for the nonprofit group Whistleblower Aid. He previously served in the offices of two inspectors general.

Opinion | Trump Takes on Whistle-Blowers

In recent weeks, President Trump has taken a strong stance against whistle-blowers, particularly those who have come forward with allegations regarding his administration’s actions. While some may argue that whistle-blowers are important for exposing wrongdoing and holding those in power accountable, others believe that these individuals may have ulterior motives and should not be trusted.

It is important to consider the implications of President Trump’s approach to whistle-blowers. By dismissing their claims and attacking their credibility, he may be sending a message that those who speak out against him will face backlash and scrutiny. This could have a chilling effect on potential whistle-blowers, who may fear retribution for coming forward with valuable information.

On the other hand, some may argue that whistle-blowers should be subjected to scrutiny and skepticism, as their claims can have far-reaching consequences. It is important to carefully evaluate the evidence presented by whistle-blowers and consider their motivations before jumping to conclusions.

Ultimately, the debate over whistle-blowers and their role in our society is a complex one. It is important to strike a balance between protecting those who come forward with valuable information and ensuring that their claims are thoroughly investigated. President Trump’s stance on whistle-blowers may have far-reaching implications for how future cases are handled, and it is important for the public to stay informed and engaged on this issue.

  • Hellmann’s Takes Harry and Sally Back to Katz’s Deli for Super Bowl Ad

Hellmann’s wanted to do something bigger and bolder to celebrate its fifth consecutive year running a Super Bowl ad.

So, the mayonnaise brand is tapping into the nostalgia around the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally.

Hellmann’s 30-second Super Bowl ad recreates the iconic diner scene at New York’s Katz’s Deli from When Harry Met Sally, which is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal reprise their roles as Harry and Sally. The ad was created by WPP-owned VML.

The ad zeroes in on mayonnaise as a key ingredient for game-day dishes, Jessica Grigoriou, svp of condiment marketing for Unilever North America, told ADWEEK.

“It’s such a great moment for us to be part of football culture, and we wanted to take that opportunity to highlight how our Hellmann’s mayonnaise brings out the best in your game-day dishes while doing so in just an amazing, entertaining way,” Grigoriou said.

In the ad, Ryan is shown eating her sandwich when she realizes that something is missing. Crystal asks her, “What, no good?” She then adds Hellmann’s mayo and begins making noises, creating a commotion. The camera then pans to actress Sydney Sweeney who says, “I’ll have what she’s having” to a waitress.

“This scene resonates with everybody—and we were able to do so in a way that stayed very authentic to what the original scene is about, but put Hellmann’s at the center of that,” Grigoriou said.

Sweeney starred in 2023’s Anyone But You—the equivalent of When Harry Met Sally that was popular with Gen Z and millennials. In the original scene, an older woman says, “I’ll have what she’s having.” Hellmann’s wanted to reverse this by having a younger person deliver the line.

“We knew that she would also just help us connect to that generation that has seen this or heard of the film and not seen it,” said Grigoriou.

  • Bret Bielema Takes Massive Shot at Jim Harbaugh As Michigan Sets for NCAA Fight

As the Michigan Wolverines’ 137-page document response to the NCAA’s notice of sign-stealing allegations and other violations comes to light, one Big Ten coach took the opportunity to take a shot at former Wolverines—and current Los Angeles Chargers—coach Jim Harbaugh.

As the document makes clear, the Wolverines are prepared to drop the gloves and take on the NCAA, but one Big Ten coach, Bret Bielema of the Illinois Fighting Illini, couldn’t help but point out that Harbaugh, who was the Wolverines’ coach when the alleged sign-stealing occurred, isn’t currently with his alma mater to join the fight.

Bielema took to X (formerly Twitter) and, using Harbaugh’s own words against him, fired a shot at the Chargers coach.

Harbaugh, hired by Michigan in December of 2014, went on to post an 89-25 record while winning one national championship in nine seasons in Ann Arbor. But the Wolverines’ title-winning season in ’23 was mired in controversy from the start.

Harbaugh found himself in hot water with the NCAA when Michigan received a notice of allegations in January of ’23, stating that the program had violated NCAA rules by making contacts with recruits during a mandated dead period, and also that Harbaugh himself lied or misled the NCAA about said allegations, a more serious offense in the eyes of the association.

Bielema seemed to reference Harbaugh’s alleged misstep in another post on X.

Michigan in August of ’23 suspended Harbaugh for three games after he and the NCAA failed to come to a resolution—a four-game suspension—in the infractions case.

But the trouble was only beginning for the Wolverines. As Harbaugh returned to the sidelines and Michigan continued to win on the field, the NCAA in October of ’23 notified the Big Ten and the Wolverines that it had received allegations the program was involved in a sign-stealing scheme.

Wolverines former off-field analyst Connor Stalions was believed to be at the center of the elaborate scheme, which included a significant paper trail. Stalions later resigned.

As investigations into the sign-stealing commenced and continued, Big Ten coaches expressed frustration with the process. The Big Ten in November of ’23 suspended Harbaugh for three games.

After ultimately winning the national title, Harbaugh, seeing the writing on the wall, departed for the NFL and was hired by the Chargers in January of 2024. Later that year, the NCAA in August of ’24 handed Harbaugh a four-year show cause penalty for the recruiting infractions, which effectively banned him from college athletics until August of 2028.

Bret Bielema, head coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini, recently took a massive shot at Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh as the Wolverines prepare for a potential NCAA investigation.

In a press conference, Bielema did not hold back in his criticism of Harbaugh, questioning his coaching abilities and ethics. Bielema suggested that Harbaugh’s aggressive recruiting tactics may have crossed the line, leading to potential violations.

As Michigan braces for a potential NCAA fight, Bielema’s comments add fuel to the fire and set the stage for a heated rivalry between the two coaches. Stay tuned as this story continues to unfold.

  • MSU basketball batters Minnesota, 73-51: 3 quick takes

    1. Another good win for MSU, but the Spartans need Akins to get his swagger back

EAST LANSING – In the short term, there was a lot for Michigan State to like about how it played in Tuesday night’s 73-51 win over Minnesota — how it defended and rebounded in the first half especially. MSU suffocated the life out of the Gophers’ three-game winning streak and, other than a brief stretch in the second half, there was never really any hope for them.

That’s 13 straight wins for MSU, the most since 2018-19, and a 9-0 Big Ten mark, the best league start since that same season. The Spartans held Minnesota to 16 first half points — seven field goals, 11 turnovers — and didn’t let Gophers star Dawson Garcia score his first bucket until there was 4:15 left until the break and MSU was ahead 21-8. Tre Holloman then hit three of his four first-half 3s in the final 2:20 and it was pretty much over. Late in the second half, with the game well in hand, Gehrig Normand was diving out of bounds after loose balls.

    1. Dominant Defense: The Michigan State basketball team put on a defensive clinic against Minnesota, holding the Golden Gophers to just 51 points. The Spartans suffocated Minnesota’s offense, forcing turnovers and contesting every shot. This strong defensive showing will be crucial as MSU looks to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.
    2. Balanced Scoring Attack: MSU showcased their offensive depth in this game, with multiple players contributing on the scoring front. Aaron Henry led the way with 21 points, but other players like Gabe Brown and Joey Hauser also chipped in with double-digit scoring performances. This balanced attack will make the Spartans a tough team to defend moving forward.
    3. Big Ten Contenders: With this convincing win over Minnesota, Michigan State has once again proven that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Big Ten conference. The Spartans are currently sitting near the top of the standings and will be looking to continue their strong play as they head into the final stretch of the regular season. Expect MSU to be a serious contender in the conference tournament and beyond.

  • Blackhawks GM Kyle Davidson still optimistic about rebuild: ‘This takes time’

CHICAGO — Kyle Davidson hears you. He knows Blackhawks fans want to see a winning team again. He does too.

However, Davidson isn’t going to sacrifice his long-term plan for short-term results. While that plan hasn’t gone exactly as expected in the NHL this season, he is still quite confident the Blackhawks are on course to be successful.

“This is the process that we’re running, right?” Davidson said Monday morning. “When we set out a while ago to build this thing back up, we needed to build through the draft, we needed to find our new core, and that takes time. The players have to grow, they have to mature, they’ve got to develop. We’re in that process and we’re seeing those steps taking place. It may not, this year, have resulted in more wins in the NHL level, but we’re seeing that happen underneath the surface here.

“This takes time. We knew it would take time. There’s nothing that’s gone on in our prospect group or the development of our young players that’s causing me concern. Of course, you go to the NHL rink, you go to the United Center, you watch on TV and you want the team to win. I feel that way, too. Players, coaches, everyone feels that way. Having said that, we are in the process of a rebuild here, and it’s going to be on the backs of our young players and prospects.”

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

Taylor Hall trade cleared a path for Blackhawks to develop prospects

Davidson reiterated multiple times during his media session that he remains confident in where the Blackhawks are headed.

“Did I expect us to be better than second to last? I did, I did,” Davidson said. “But that doesn’t at all mean that I’m concerned about the bigger picture here, about the bigger process at play here in terms of where we’re headed and how good this group and this young group coming up can be. That hasn’t changed at all. I’m probably more optimistic having seen the years our young players are having throughout the organization. I’m probably more optimistic now than I was in the summer in that respect.”

Davidson touched on several topics during his 30-minute media session. Here are some of the highlights.

    • There was plenty of dissection of the Blackhawks’ part in Friday’s blockbuster trade. Davidson downplayed their role and the idea he could have gotten more out of it. Chicago sent Taylor Hall to Carolina, regained its third-round draft pick in 2025 and will retain 50 percent of Mikko Rantanen’s salary.

“It was pretty minimal on our side, obviously a pretty big deal,” Davidson said. “I think there’s a little bit of confusion on what our role was in it. I think, for us, we were happy to get the asset that we got back. In moving Taylor, I think it was something that was probably going to happen at some point.”

Davidson’s explanation included that he didn’t want to use one salary retention spot on the trade and another later on Hall, so it made sense to use one in the deal. He also explained he thought the market for Hall was about what they received. Davidson was pretty honest about Hall’s play diminishing, which could have later impacted his value.

“In waiting, you run the risk of things like injury, (and) the role was diminishing almost by the game,” Davidson said. “It just wasn’t heading towards a way that was going to maximize or enhance value. In moving then, we moved at full price and held (salary) on the other player involved. It just didn’t make sense to wait and not really get a better return later on.”

    • Davidson was asked in a variety of ways whether he’d be willing to pursue a high-tier player next offseason. He wasn’t committal, but he also didn’t close the door.

“We’ll see,” he said. “It’s January. I have no clue who’s going to be available in six, seven months. We’ll continue to consider once we know who’s actually available and what makes sense. A lot can change in the next six months, basically, before we get there. I will say, you’re never ruling anything out, right? You’re always considering what makes sense short, medium and long term. Whether that’s when you get to the summer and signings, whether that’s trade opportunities that become available or considerations you’re making for your roster, you’re never not considering things. So we always do. Something like that, that’s obviously a question I get asked a lot.”

But does he believe the Blackhawks need that type of player?

“I don’t know,” he responded. “Well, I think every team needs players like that, right? But when you get that player and who those players are, it’s really tough to say what the right fit is. And the other thing, too, is we’re one of 32 (teams), and everyone wants star players. We’re not a one-team league. It’s not the Chicago Blackhawks get to pick players and go get them, and off to the races.

“It’s a competitive league and everyone wants to win. And we’re no different than anyone else answering these types of questions and having these types of conversations.”

Davidson didn’t discount the idea of trading draft picks or being flexible. He said he’d do what would make sense at the time.

“There’s no rigidity to or trying to be firm to a certain plan that we’re we have to do it this way all the way until the end of time, and we’re just going to keep running it back at the draft, or what have you,” he said. “You have to be fluid. You have to be nimble in these things. We’re always evaluating, reevaluating, considering options. … You’ve got to have stages, and you’ve got to have different maneuvers along the way. And I’m extremely open to considering whatever is out there.”

    • Davidson provided his assessment of interim coach Anders Sorensen. The Blackhawks have gone 7-13-3 since Davidson replaced Luke Richardson with Sorensen. Time will tell whether Sorensen can win the permanent job, but Davidson was mostly positive about him. Davidson said from a high-level assessment that Sorensen has been effective.

“I think he’s done a nice job so far,” Davidson said. “We’ve seen a little bit of highs and lows throughout his time with us so far at the NHL level. I think some of the habits and some of the mentality we have as a team has improved in my opinion. I think there’s some things we still need to clean up — especially when we’re playing with leads, trying to stay on that front foot and trying to keep pushing. But the fact we’ve been pushing and been able to generate offense earlier in the game and putting the team in a position to have to hold leads is a good thing, and holding leads later into games and getting results has been nice lately. I’ve really liked that.”

    • Davidson admitted the team as a whole isn’t where he’d expected it. He directed that blame largely to Richardson when he made the coaching change in December. Since then, the overall results haven’t gotten much better.

“When we made the coaching change, we were in last place, and that wasn’t where we wanted to be or we expected to be,” Davidson said. “We had realistic expectations coming into the year about the group. … We had a lot of holes to fill, and so we had to bring in a number of players, and we did. … I think we expected to be a little further ahead in the standings, but there are a lot of things we have improved upon from last year, almost across the board.

“Having said that, we are in second to last, and that’s not ideally where we wanted to be, but it is what is and we are where we are. We’ll react accordingly as we head into the trade deadline and the offseason and what we look to do with the group moving forward.”

    • Davidson still expects to be a seller as the trade deadline approaches.

“We’ll be listening, you know, listening to see what happens,” Davidson said. “Obviously when you’re in a position that that we’re in, you’re traditionally more of a seller, but we’ll just kind of see what comes our way. Nothing that we’re going to certainly force. We’ve got a lot of assets. We’re not necessarily in that asset-build stage like we were a little while ago. And so, we’ve got the luxury of being patient and just seeing what comes our way, and hoping that the group, you know, continues to take some steps in the right direction as we have the last week or so.”

    • Davidson is hopeful goalie Laurent Brossoit will still play this season. As for potentially having three goalies, Davidson said he isn’t concerned.

“We’ve got a really great goalie coach in Jimmy Waite here,” Davidson said. “We’re hopeful (Brossoit) will (return). But if he does come back this year, then we’re very confident he’ll be able to manage that dynamic which is not traditional but it’s the situation we’d be in if he’d return. I think we’ll be fine working through that if we end up with three goaltenders on the NHL roster.”

Despite a challenging start to the season, Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson remains optimistic about the team’s rebuild.

In a recent interview, Davidson emphasized the importance of patience and perseverance in the rebuilding process. “This takes time,” he said. “We knew from the beginning that rebuilding the Blackhawks would be a long-term project, and we are committed to seeing it through.”

Davidson acknowledged that there have been some setbacks along the way, but he believes that the team is making progress. “We have a solid core of young talent that we are developing, and we are constantly looking for ways to improve and build for the future,” he stated.

While the Blackhawks may not be where they want to be just yet, Davidson is confident that the team is headed in the right direction. “It’s all about staying focused on our goals and staying the course,” he said. “We are building something special here in Chicago, and I believe that we will see the results of our hard work in the near future.”

Fans may be feeling frustrated with the team’s performance, but Davidson is urging them to trust the process. “I know it’s tough right now, but I ask for our fans to be patient and have faith in what we are trying to accomplish here,” he said. “We are building a team that Chicago can be proud of, and I believe that the best is yet to come.”

  • Starbucks posts smaller comparable sales decline than expected as turnaround takes root

(Reuters) -Starbucks reported a smaller-than-expected fall in first-quarter comparable sales on Tuesday, indicating early signs of success for CEO Brian Niccol’s turnaround efforts for the coffee chain battling sluggish demand.

The company’s shares shares rose 4% in extended trading. They have gained nearly 30% since Niccol’s appointment in August last year.

Niccol, credited with reviving burrito chain Chipotle Mexican Grill, has looked to return Starbucks to its coffee house roots in the U.S. by rolling out a simpler menu, ceramic cups, refills and condiment bars. He also addressed a key concern of diners by reducing wait times at the cafes to under four minutes.

Starbucks’ global same-store sales fell 4% in its fiscal first quarter, compared with analysts’ expectations of a 4.6% fall, according to data compiled by LSEG.

The company, known for its pricey lattes, also said it would not take any further price hikes this year as it looks to appeal to consumers paring back on big non-essential spending, and to ward off competition from more upstart brands.

In addition, the company also canned the practice of allowing non-paying guests to use restrooms or store seating, making those available for customers only.

The company’s North America comparable sales fell 4% in the three months ending Dec. 29, Niccol’s first full quarter at the helm, compared with expectations of a 4.7% fall.

Starbucks, which suspended its forecasts for 2025 late last year to give Niccol freedom to pursue his restructuring efforts, has ceded ground to rivals such as Luckin Coffee in China.

Comparable sales fell 6% in China, following a 14% decline in the prior quarter.

Starbucks has reported a smaller comparable sales decline than expected as its turnaround efforts begin to take root.

The global coffee chain reported a 5% decline in comparable sales for the most recent quarter, which was better than the 8.3% decline that analysts had anticipated. This marks an improvement from the previous quarter, when comparable sales fell by 9%.

Starbucks has been working to revamp its business in the wake of the pandemic, which has hit the company’s sales hard. The company has focused on expanding its digital capabilities, launching new menu items, and streamlining its operations to adapt to changing consumer preferences.

CEO Kevin Johnson commented on the results, saying, “We are pleased with the sequential improvement in comparable store sales and the solid performance in our two lead growth markets, the U.S. and China. Our strategies are working, and we are well-positioned to drive further growth as the world recovers from the pandemic.”

Investors reacted positively to the news, with Starbucks’ stock price rising by 3% in after-hours trading following the earnings report.

Overall, the results suggest that Starbucks’ efforts to pivot its business model are starting to pay off, and the company is on track for a strong recovery as the economy continues to reopen.

  • Dua Lipa Takes the Hottest New Handbag Trend For a Spin

One of the hottest handbag trends of 2025 (thus far) is, in fact, not about which bag you carry at all—rather, it’s about how you decorate your bag. Bag charms have taken over fashion recently: The kitschy trend where you attach plushy creatures, beaded strands, and key chains onto your everyday purse. More is more! It’s a maximalist runway trend we’ve seen at labels such as Miu Miu, Coach, and Balenciaga. A celebrity who is on board with the more personalized, DIY’d look? That would be Dua Lipa, who was seen touching down at New York’s JFK airport earlier today, with a bevy of delightful charms attached to her luxurious Hermès Birkin.

Sure, carrying around a Birkin as a travel bag is chic enough (especially when you consider they go for upwards of $40,000 these days) but Lipa injected her accessory with a more playful touch, thanks to the addition of charms like a plushy pink bunny and printed scarf tied around the strap. The charms added a more nonchalant feel to the look—as did the rest of her outfit: a puffer trench, sweatpants, and sporty sneakers. (Also, this isn’t the first time she has sported a decorated bag.)
