Bryce Young’s Five-Star Talent, Work Ethic Give Notre Dame Chance To Combat Georgia’s Depth, Size
In reality, there’s a good chance Smart previously watched Bryce Young’s film.
Bryce Young played two seasons of varsity football at Charlotte Christian with current Georgia sophomore defensive back Kyron Jones.
So, it’s possible the Georgia head coach simply failed to notice him as a sophomore and junior because he was still a bit of a klutz.
Growing up, Bryce Young played flag football, basketball, soccer and various other youth sports, delaying tackle football until his freshman year.
“He wanted (me) to wait until I was in high school because he didn’t start playing until he was in high school, either,” Bryce Young said.
At 6-foot-2 and skinny, he spent his first year or so of football searching for a position that suited his skill set.
His first experiment failed.
“Going into sophomore year, me and Bryce were probably the same size and Bryce was playing receiver at the time,” said Fighting Irish freshman wideout Micah Gilbert, who was also Bryce Young’s classmate at Charlotte Christian. “So, he was still growing into himself, all clumsy, just bumping into stuff everywhere he goes, and he’s playing receiver.
“He can’t catch at all. Can’t catch for nothing.”
Shortly thereafter, Bryce Young switched to inside linebacker but, according to his Max Preps profile, only recorded two tackles on varsity during his sophomore campaign.
Then, he hit another growth spurt, shooting a couple of inches past his father’s 6-foot-3 stature. Over the summer, he attended Notre Dame’s Sunday Night Lights camp and worked out with defensive line coach Al Washington.
After the camp, Freeman offered him a scholarship.
After a great camp and conversation with @Marcus_Freeman1, I am extremely grateful to receive my first offer from the University of Notre Dame #AGTG #GoIrish @CoachWash56 @CoachAlGolden @CoachJasonEstep @CharChristAD @LemmingReport @NDFootball pic.twitter.com/PQuQFE9lIF
— Bryce Young (@BryceYoung_22) June 13, 2022By his junior season, Bryce Young had found his position on the gridiron but was still adapting to his accelerated development period.
“He hit 6-5, and we’re like, ‘Yo, what’s going on?’ And then he started playing D-end, and we’re like, ‘Okay, he’s still moving a little weird,’” Gilbert said. “(He) still looked like he was growing into his body.”
That fall, he recorded 92 tackles (6.0 for a loss), 3.0 sacks and 11 hurries in 11 games, a quality season but not the type of numbers to raise his national profile. At season’s end, he remained a three-star recruit by 247Sports.
The following April, he committed to Notre Dame over offers from Penn State, USC, Miami (Fla.) and Stanford. The only SEC offer recorded on his 247Sports recruiting profile came from Tennessee.
Bryce Young stood at 6-foot-6 and 250 pounds for his senior season, where he registered 97 tackles (18.0 for a loss), 14.0 sacks and 12 hurries.
Those numbers got him noticed. He was invited to the All-American Bowl and catapulted up the recruiting rankings throughout the fall, finishing the cycle as 247Sports No. 24 overall player and a five-star prospect.
He had finally adjusted to his immense frame and stature.
“When kids are growing, and their muscular control is not catching up with their body when it’s growing at a rapid pace, there’s a little awkwardness at times,” Bryant Young said. “As Bryce got really familiar with his body when he could do physically, getting stronger and, with his frame, being able to control his movement, that’s when you see him really taken off.”
Of course, it was more than that. Bryce Young’s effort was also paying off.
“He worked with his dad a lot,” Gilbert said. “So, the work he put in is what the outcome came of it. Bryce is gonna be the real deal.”

An advocate for social justice and son of a pastor, Samuel was a member of the Black Panthers before he passed away in 1972, when Rebecca was just six years old.“I never knew my father really; my memories of him are sketchy and faint,” Rebecca shared in an Instagram post dedicated to him in 2021. “I know that I play the piano like him, and that I inherited his love for music and his penchant for playing by ear, rather than by sight.”

Although rain is forecast tonight for Times Square, where New York City’s globally celebrated New Year’s Eve ball drop annually takes place, the program should be terrific, and history also will be made.
The 7-foot-tall illuminated “2025” numbers are currently displayed in Broadway Plaza, between 46th and 47th Streets in Times Square. Visitors can view them up close and capture memorable photos for holiday cards or social media. The numbers will later be moved to One Times Square and illuminated during the New Year’s Eve iconic ball drop to welcome 2025. (Photo by: Deb Cohn-Orbach/UCG/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)

At 6 p.m. ET, the celebration will begin atop One Times Square -–the building at the intersection of 42nd Street, Seventh Avenue and Broadway in the heart of Times Square— where the ball will be lit and raised, accompanied by special pyrotechnic effects.
Performers featured on ABC’s “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” will include Rita Ora, the Jonas Brothers, Megan Moroney, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, TLC and Carrie Underwood, while CNN’s “New Year’s Eve Live” will feature Mickey Guyton and Underwood, and Univision’s “Feliz 2025!” will feature Greeicy, De La Ghetto and Kapo.
At 11:10 p.m. ET, New York City will host a 400th birthday celebration—it was first settled by French Huguenots transported by the Dutch West India Company in 1624—while Guyton will perform her version of John Lennon’s “Imagine”at 11:33 p.m. ET.
At 11:59 p.m. ET, New York City Mayor Eric Adams will push the crystal button that signals the descent of the New Year’s Eve ball, leading the final 60-second countdown to the New Year 2025 on One Times Square’s countdown stage.
At the stroke of midnight, the lights on the New Year’s Eve ball will be turned off, while the numerals of 2025 will be illuminated high above Times Square. Simultaneously 3,000 pounds of confetti—including thousands of wishes from relevelers around the world hoping for peace, love, good health and a better future—will be released from building rooftops throughout Times Square.
Tonight will be the last night the legendary, current New Year’s Eve ball will drop: It will go on display next year in a museum in the newly restored One Times Square.
This 26-story building opened in 1904 as the headquarters of the newspaper, The New York Times; the New Year’s Eve ball drop ceremony has taken place here since 1907.
In 2022, Jamestown Properties, the global real estate firm that owns and manages One Times Square, launched a $500 million redevelopment of it to turn in into a 21st century visitor center. This redevelopment will open much of the building’s interior to the public for the first time in decades.
Michael Phillips, chairman of Jamestown Properties, said in an interview with Forbes.com this week that the building will offer immersive experiences for visitors to enjoy; a museum displaying the current New Year’s Eve ball plus two earlier ones; a viewing deck; function and VIP rooms; and a wedding chapel, which he said will be Times Square’s equivalent of City Hall, New York’s marriage bureau in lower Manhattan that conducts in-person, civil wedding ceremonies.
He said the building’s new features will begin to open next August and continue to do so progressively through the end of 2025.
Jamestown earlier this month launched Times Square Island, a new Fortnite island based on One Times Square’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration, bringing the ball drop celebration to Fortnite’s over 650 million players worldwide.

Princess Charlotte’s spot-on impersonations were likely passed down from Queen Elizabeth, who apparently had a knack for impersonating famous people. “Queen Elizabeth used to have her family in stitches with her impersonations of politicians, including U.S. presidents and former Russian leader Boris Yeltsin,” Dampier added.
This special talent was confirmed by another royal author, Gyles Brandreth (who wrote Elizabeth: An Intimate Portrait). During an episode of A Right Royal Podcast, the writer revealed that Queen Elizabeth “could do regional accents from all over the country.”
I’d do anything to be a fly on the wall during the royal family’s game of charades.

Princess Charlotte, the adorable daughter of Prince William and Kate Middleton, has always been known for her charm and charisma. But it seems that she may have inherited a quirky talent from her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth.According to sources close to the royal family, Princess Charlotte has shown a knack for mimicry and imitation, much like Queen Elizabeth herself. The Queen is known for her ability to imitate accents and mannerisms, and it seems that Princess Charlotte has inherited this talent as well.
Friends and family of the young princess have reportedly been entertained by her spot-on impressions of various members of the royal family, including her own parents. It seems that Princess Charlotte has a keen eye for detail and a natural talent for mimicry, much to the amusement of those around her.
While it remains to be seen whether Princess Charlotte will pursue a career in acting or comedy, it’s clear that she has inherited a special talent from her great-grandmother. Who knows, maybe we’ll see Princess Charlotte showing off her skills on stage or screen in the future.

After Game 5 of a decisive NBA Finals win by the Boston Celtics, SportsCenter host Scott Van Pelt sat with his favorite ESPN NBA analyst Tim Legler to break down how Boston got its ‘chip.
Legler took a back seat at the network in recent years, and rumors swirled online about his future. Amid contract talks and a pivotal summer hiring cycle at the network, Van Pelt went to bat.
“NBA Twitter and NBA fans get that this dude is the best there is,” Van Pelt said. “I hope that the bosses [get it]. I don’t want to lose you, but if we lose you a little bit because you’re out there doing games, that will be cool with me.”

— claire de lune (@ClaireMPLS) June 18, 2024
Here was Van Pelt taking advantage of a less-observed power as one of ESPN’s increasingly few “needle-movers.” In this era, the network has consolidated salary and workload in fewer top hosts. Van Pelt is one of them. That means opportunities like hosting Monday Night Countdown, yes, but also the ability to give talent like Legler work — and cut through when he vouches for them.
At the same time as broadcasters like Van Pelt, Stephen A. Smith, Mike Greenberg, Pat McAfee and the Monday Night Football booth of Joe Buck and Troy Aikman make news with record paydays, the network is paring back the old pathways to the top. Two of the old pipelines — ESPN Radio and ESPN2 — are hardly a way to get noticed these days. ESPN barely pretends to care about radio anymore, and ESPN2 is full of podcasts and reruns. The top voices of ESPN’s previous generation most interested in talent development jumped ship to do exactly that, away from the Worldwide Leader.
That puts Van Pelt, for instance, in the unique position of offering a lifeline to young analysts. Hosting one of the few shows that matters at ESPN these days, Van Pelt’s personal taste and proclivities can grant a budding talent a real platform. Over the past decade hosting SportsCenter, he has done exactly that for not just Legler, but also Bill Barnwell and Ryan Clark.
The same is true for Smith and First Take. Particularly since cutting bait with Max Kellerman in 2021, FT has become a fertile ground for ESPN talent to hone their broadcasting skills. There are the external debaters like Chris Russo or Shannon Sharpe, but also ESPNers such as Kimberly Martin, Mina Kimes, Brian Windhorst and Andraya Carter whose profiles grew considerably after joining the show’s talent stable.
Ask Greenberg why Get Up improved after a rocky start, and he likely will praise the rotating cast of analysts the show built out. From Dan Graziano to Domonique Foxworth during NFL season to Zach Lowe or Jessica Mendoza to round out the calendar, lesser-known ESPN analysts get a recurring gig one or two mornings each week.
Like with everything about his role, McAfee exists outside the usual ESPN ecosystem. He has his own stable of up-and-coming contributors, but they are not ESPN talent. Instead, personalities like J.J. Watt, Darius Butler and even TNT’s Paul Bissonnette get regular airtime on the midday show.
The conversation around ESPN’s “needle-movers” is often zero-sum. As if these star hosts themselves demanded ESPN pay them exorbitant salaries at the expense of other programming. Aside from asking a Smith or Greenberg to give money back to Walt Disney, this way of giving back to fellow talent as a gatekeeper allows these stars to use their high profile to offset that pattern. They are filling a void that ESPN now neglects.
Think of the old model. ESPN would pluck young talent from local markets or rival networks, put them in small roles on lesser shows, and see who developed. On the radio side, they found breakout stars in Doug Gottlieb and Ryen Russillo. Smaller programs like Cold Pizza and His & Hers led to larger roles for Skip Bayless and Jemele Hill.
For a time, stars like Bill Simmons and Dan Le Batard had a vested interest in developing a pipeline. At Grantland and on Highly Questionable and The Dan Le Batard Show, the two grew branches off a tree that still bears fruit for ESPN. The network has Simmons and Le Batard to thank for turning Barnwell, Lowe, Kimes and Pablo Torre into recognizable voices — to name just a few.
This dynamic is building on itself. As ESPN gives these “needle-movers” more jobs and cuts back elsewhere, it gives the likes of Smith or Greenberg not only the workload to justify their salaries, but the power that equates with those salaries. As talent producers, they are not going anywhere.
Even with their hit streak, these top hosts can’t possibly recreate that model. There is only so much they can do, and so much talent to pull from. More worrying is the fact that ESPN used to also serve as a pipeline for the whole industry. That is no longer the case.
For the time being, the “needle-movers” clearly see the opportunity that comes with their platform and are passing it down to others coming up.
ESPN has a long history of showcasing top talent in the sports broadcasting world, and two of their biggest ‘needle-movers’ are undoubtedly Stephen A. Smith and Scott Van Pelt. These two personalities have become household names and are known for their engaging commentary, insightful analysis, and larger-than-life personalities. But what sets them apart is not just their on-air presence, but also their ability to build a talent pipeline by mentoring and uplifting the next generation of sports broadcasters. Both Smith and Van Pelt have taken on roles as mentors and advocates for up-and-coming talent, offering advice, guidance, and opportunities for those looking to break into the industry.
Their dedication to developing the next wave of sports media professionals is crucial in keeping the industry fresh, diverse, and innovative. By nurturing new voices and perspectives, Smith and Van Pelt are ensuring that ESPN continues to be a leader in sports broadcasting for years to come.
So next time you see these ‘needle-movers’ on your screen, remember that they are not just entertaining and informing you – they are also shaping the future of sports media through their commitment to building a talent pipeline.
