  • Antonio Pierce’s Next Career Move Announced After Raiders’ Pete Carroll’s Major Quarterback Decision Amid Aaron Rodgers Talks

Antonio Pierce’s Next Career Move Announced After Raiders’ Pete Carroll’s Major Quarterback Decision Amid Aaron Rodgers Talks

The coldness of more than two decades seems to have warmed up, finally. So cold the relationship with the University of Arizona had become, that when Antonio Pierce stepped in to coach in college football landscape, he landed his first job in none other than UA’s rival Arizona State University. What happened?

After Pierce’s final season in UA in 2000, Arizona fired Dick Tomey and hired John Mackovic as their coach. The transition turned terrible for Pierce, to say the least. Pierce said Mackovic didn’t want departing players around the program, which became a bone of contention since he needed a place to train for the NFL. “We’re working out for the combine on the practice field, and he comes in there and kicks us out,” Pierce’s teammate at UA Brandon Manumaleuna told to The Athletic. “He said, ‘You guys are done here.”’ Pierce added, “That left a bad taste in my mouth for a long time.” But time heals the deepest of the wounds.

He has moved on. Despite spending his CFB coaching career with ASU, UA still has a special place for him. He still has his college jersey and helmet displayed at home. He still cherishes the relationships he built and the trust the coaching staff had in him. When you’re 19, Pierce said, having someone believe in you is the best feeling in the world. “That commitment and that honor takes you where you want to go, right?” Pierce said. “That’s to play football, get an education, better your life. That’s what U of A brought me, and that’s never going to leave.” So is that why he is going back to his roots to get back his confidence after an abysmal season?

2024 was not the year for either the Raiders or Antonio Pierce. The team fumbled their whole season and finished with 4-13. But Pierce probably thought of coming back. After the Raiders’ loss in the season final, Pierce said, “We’re going to look back and say, ‘OK, why?’ and we’re going to figure out that ‘why’ over the next couple months. Then we get back in this bad boy. We’ll be OK.” The team however was not OK with giving Pierce a second chance. As of now, he has been unable to secure a job in the NFL, but his Alma mater came up with an important duty for him.

The former linebacker and Arizona announced on Instagram on Saturday that the coach is going to be the keynote speaker at an event for high school coaches in the Arizona area. Arizona Football indicated how they want their high school coaches to develop more. So, they wanted a motivational and experienced coach to speak for them. They referred to this event as a ‘Coaching Clinic‘ and chose the former Raiders HC for the role. The event will take place on March 28th and 29th. The stint is sure to uplift the morale of Pierce, given the situation he is in presently.

It’s unclear what his contract situation was, but he at least had two years, so he’ll get paid by the Raiders in 2025. But after being left off in the NFL, can he come back to CFB? Well, his hands are tied there as well. Pierce resigned from ASU in 2022 amid an NCAA investigation into recruiting violations at the school. Pierce received an eight-year “show-cause” penalty after it was found that he facilitated impermissible contact with recruits during the COVID pandemic. The penalty was handed down in October 2024, when Pierce was working for the Raiders. But he can still speak at events.

While Pierce had been looking forward to pursuing this new job, his replacement, Pete Carroll, has been looking for excellent initiatives for the Raiders. Following the 2024 season, it became evident that the team would undergo significant changes. Even Tom Brady has intimated that, as a minority owner, he will ensure that the team is astonishingly strong in the 2025 season. And for that, Brady and the company hired Pete Carroll as their head coach.

Although the decision was startling, it appears that the new HC is already working hard for the team. He plans for a seasoned quarterback to join the squad for the 2025 season. But why a seasoned quarterback? And can it be Aaron Rodgers who will be joining them?

Will the Raiders make Aaron Rodgers their starting quarterback?

Rodgers’ time in white and green is up. And according to recent speculations, Las Vegas has a high opinion of him. There have been rumors that Chip Kelly, the team’s offensive coordinator, and Pete Carroll have been considering the possibility of integrating A-Rod into the men in black. Furthermore, Carroll, in that media appearance, began to convey how much the team is thinking about the quarterback position.

Carroll stated, “It’s our mission to build this football team around the quarterback position. It isn’t the only spot. We happen to have the greatest of all time to help us and to see clearly, and we’re going to lean on Tom as much as we possibly can for his insights because nobody has the insights that he has. He’s that unique. But the quarterback position is one of the positions on the team, and we’ve got to make it all fit together well. I’ve had pretty good success with my quarterbacks in the past.”

So can the former Super Bowl-winner and four-time league Most Valuable Player fit in that role? CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin keyed on the 41-year-old Rodgers specifically, listing the pros and cons of grabbing the Super Bowl winner. The pros of Rodgers, per Benjamin, are, “The Raiders need someone — anyone — under center, and they’ve got loads of cap space to spend on potential upgrades up front and out wide. New coach Pete Carroll insisted Las Vegas is focused on winning immediately, and that makes sense, considering he’s 73. Rodgers, whose sheer volume of experience could attract new minority owner Tom Brady, could make for a perfect short-term partner.

The cons, or, to be more specific, the question about Rodgers, Benjamin says, “Even if it required a trade up, the Raiders are decently positioned to address quarterback in the draft, owning the No. 6 overall pick. And while they’ve got money to spend, young tight end Brock Bowers is one of their few Grade-A building blocks on offense. Is this the right time to go all in on an aging passer?”

Indeed age has taken a toll on Rodgers. He was once criticized for taking sacks to avoid the risk of interceptions. Now he risks interceptions to avoid sacks. His lack of mobility, caused in part by the knee and the hamstring and whatever lingers from the Achilles, occasionally manifests itself as nervousness. Game after game, he takes the snap and taps his feet, looking to get rid of the ball as quickly as possible. Do you think he is going to be the right choice for the Raiders?

Former NFL linebacker Antonio Pierce has officially announced his next career move following the Oakland Raiders’ head coach Pete Carroll’s major quarterback decision amid ongoing talks about acquiring Aaron Rodgers.

Pierce, who has been serving as the Arizona State Sun Devils’ co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, will be leaving his current position to join the Las Vegas Raiders as their new linebackers coach.

The news comes shortly after Carroll made the bold decision to stick with Derek Carr as the team’s starting quarterback, despite ongoing rumors about a potential trade for Green Bay Packers’ star Aaron Rodgers.

Pierce, known for his leadership and defensive prowess during his playing days with the New York Giants, is expected to bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Raiders’ coaching staff. His hiring is seen as a strategic move to strengthen the team’s defense and build a championship-caliber squad.

Raiders fans are excited to see how Pierce will impact the team’s performance on the field and help lead them to success in the upcoming season. With his proven track record as a player and coach, there’s no doubt that Pierce is ready to make a significant impact in his new role with the Raiders.

  • Russia Releases U.S. Prisoner After Talks With Trump Envoy

Russia Releases U.S. Prisoner After Talks With Trump Envoy

President Trump on Tuesday secured the release of an American imprisoned in Russia as part of a deal with the Kremlin negotiated by Mr. Trump’s special envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff.

Marc Fogel, a teacher who was arrested on charges of bringing medical marijuana into Russia in August 2021, was released by the Kremlin and flown out of the country on Mr. Witkoff’s plane. Though he began serving a 14-year sentence in June 2022, Mr. Fogel was only classified as wrongfully detained by the Biden administration late last year.

Mr. Witkoff, a billionaire New York real estate executive and close friend of Mr. Trump’s, had been secretly negotiating the deal, though his presence in Moscow became apparent when he flew there on his private jet, alerting online flight trackers. It was the first known trip to Moscow by a senior U.S. official since William J. Burns, then the C.I.A. director, flew to the Russian capital in November 2021 to try to head off an invasion of Ukraine.

Mike Waltz, Mr. Trump’s national security adviser, said in a statement that Mr. Witkoff, at the president’s direction, had brought Mr. Fogel out of Russia on his plane as part of an exchange. But he did not provide any details about whether the United States or an ally had released someone in return or what other steps the administration had taken to win Mr. Fogel’s release.

An undated photo of Marc Fogel.

“President Trump, Steve Witkoff and the president’s advisers negotiated an exchange that serves as a show of good faith from the Russians and a sign we are moving in the right direction to end the brutal and terrible war in Ukraine,” Mr. Waltz said.

It is unclear whom Mr. Witkoff met with and whether other matters, including Ukraine, were part of any discussions. White House officials declined to comment on those questions.

But the deal, in discussion for several days, is a gesture of good will for both sides, aimed at smoothing the path to talks over the war in Ukraine and potentially improving relations between Russia and the United States.

It underscored President Vladimir V. Putin’s effort to build warm ties with the new administration after the Russian leader repeatedly praised Mr. Trump in the weeks since his inauguration. And it highlights the bind in which President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine finds himself, as Mr. Trump builds a channel to Moscow while voicing deep skepticism about Kyiv.

In a statement, the Fogel family thanked Mr. Trump for securing his release.

“We are beyond grateful, relieved and overwhelmed that after more than three years of detention, our father, husband and son, Marc Fogel, is finally coming home,” said the statement from Mr. Fogel’s wife, Jane Fogel, and sons, Ethan and Sam.

Mr. Witkoff’s role extends beyond just a mission to release a detained American, according to multiple people briefed on the situation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe sensitive arrangements. While Mr. Trump has appointed Keith Kellogg, a retired three-star general, as his special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, he has also assigned Mr. Witkoff a role in the peace process.

Weeks ago, Mr. Trump secretly empowered Mr. Witkoff to expand his portfolio beyond the Middle East, with the aim of opening a negotiating channel with the Russians, these people said. Mr. Trump trusts Mr. Witkoff and has told people close to him that he believes the real estate developer has the right negotiating skills to help bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

But the exact lines of authority in the administration on the issue remain unclear.

Mr. Witkoff had direct discussions with close allies of Mr. Putin before the visit to Moscow, the people briefed on the situation said. He has also discussed Ukraine with contacts in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, they said. Countries in the Persian Gulf have long sought to play a role as mediators to end the conflict.

It remains unclear whether Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin have spoken — neither side will say — but several senior Trump administration officials who would ordinarily be aware of such a call said they could not confirm it had happened.

Mr. Trump had promised during his presidential campaign to end the Russia-Ukraine war “in 24 hours.” But Mr. Putin, who has shown a willingness to try to outlast the West’s backing of Ukraine, has been in no rush to make concessions. And while Mr. Trump has signaled that he plans to use sanctions or other tools to squeeze Mr. Putin financially to force him to negotiate, it is unclear how much longer Ukraine should expect to receive deliveries of essential weaponry from the United States.

Mr. Trump has said he wants Ukraine to provide hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of rare earth minerals as repayment for U.S. security assistance since the start of the war. He announced on Tuesday that he was sending Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to meet with Mr. Zelensky.

“This war MUST and WILL END SOON,” Mr. Trump wrote on his social media site, Truth Social. “Too much Death and Destruction. The U.S. has spent BILLIONS of Dollars Globally, with little to show.”

Mr. Bessent was directed to explore with the Ukrainians what a deal for the rare earth minerals might look like, according to multiple people briefed on the plans.

Mr. Zelensky told Reuters in an interview that he was open to a deal to giving the United States access to rare earth minerals in exchange for a security guarantee.

Mr. Trump has continued to express private skepticism about Mr. Zelensky, whom he believes has taken advantage of American generosity. Mr. Trump has also been reluctant to entertain any form of U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine as part of any settlement.

Mr. Trump’s comments in his Super Bowl interview with Fox News about the future of Ukraine have once more thrown into doubt what his vision for the end of the war might be as well as his support for Ukrainian sovereignty.

“They may make a deal, they may not make a deal,” Mr. Trump said of Ukraine. “They may be Russian someday, or they may not be Russian someday.”

In the interview, Mr. Trump seemed to be musing aloud, but any questions the American president vocalizes about the future of an independent Ukraine are deeply disturbing to officials in Kyiv.

Mr. Putin, and many Russians, do see Ukraine, a former Soviet republic, as a rightful part of Russia and questioned its independence even before the war. On the other hand, Ukrainian nationalism has hardened since the Russian invasion in three years ago and the staggering losses that have followed.

Representatives of the Trump administration are expected to discuss their plans for bringing the war in Ukraine to an end at the Munich Security Conference in Germany this weekend. Mr. Kellogg, the Russia-Ukraine envoy, is set to attend the conference along with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President JD Vance.

Mr. Vance is scheduled to meet with Mr. Zelensky in Munich. That meeting could set the stage for a meeting in Washington between Mr. Trump and Mr. Zelensky. Mr. Trump has said he will meet with the Ukrainian leader soon, and he is expected to also speak with Mr. Putin.

Allies of Mr. Fogel had been arguing to Russian authorities that they should release him as part of gesture to the new Trump administration.

Mr. Fogel’s 95-year old mother, Malphine, is a resident of Butler, Pa., and a supporter of Mr. Trump’s. Ms. Fogel was in attendance at the Butler rally where an attempted assassin shot Mr. Trump in the ear. She had met with Mr. Trump before the rally, and was set to join him on the stage, a plan upended by the attack.

Allies of Mr. Fogel had hoped he would be included in the large prisoner swap deal that freed Paul Whelan, the former Marine, and Evan Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, last August. But the Biden administration did not press for him to be included because, at the time, Mr. Fogel had not been classified as wrongfully detained because of the amount of marijuana he was carrying into Russia.

Mr. Fogel’s legal team said his release was “long overdue.”

“After years of bureaucratic inaction including consistent refusals to designate Marc as wrongfully detained, President Trump secured Marc’s release in just a few weeks, wasting no time in taking decisive action to bring Marc home,” Martin de Luca and Andrew Smith, Mr. Fogel’s lawyers, said in a statement.

For Mr. Putin, the decision to release Mr. Fogel is a shift from his far less accommodating stance during the Biden administration. When Tucker Carlson, the former Fox News host, asked Mr. Putin in a February 2024 interview to release Mr. Gershkovich, the Russian president shot back: “We have done so many gestures of good will out of decency that I think we have run out of them.”

In a surprising turn of events, Russia has released an American prisoner following talks with a special envoy from President Trump. The prisoner, who has been detained in Russia for months on charges of espionage, was released as a gesture of goodwill towards the United States.

The envoy, whose identity has not been disclosed, reportedly had productive discussions with Russian officials and was able to secure the prisoner’s release. This diplomatic breakthrough comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two countries, and could signal a thaw in relations.

President Trump has welcomed the news of the prisoner’s release, calling it a positive step towards building a better relationship with Russia. He has expressed his gratitude to the Russian government for their cooperation in resolving this issue.

The released prisoner is currently on his way back to the United States, where he will be reunited with his family and friends. His release is seen as a sign of progress in diplomatic efforts between the two countries, and a hopeful sign for future cooperation.

  • Trump sticks to hockey, avoids tariff talks during Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers’ visit

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump mostly stuck to sports and avoided any talk of tariffs as he celebrated the NHL’s defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers at the White House on Monday.

The ceremony was delayed nearly an hour because Trump was talking to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau about pausing tariffs on the country, as he did with Mexico.

Trump made repeated references to Panthers owner Vinnie Viola being a friend. Viola was briefly Trump’s nominee to be Secretary of the Army in 2016 before withdrawing from consideration.

The Panthers made their White House visit before facing the Eastern Conference-leading Washington Capitals on Tuesday night.

President Trump welcomed the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers to the White House today, but notably avoided discussing tariffs or trade issues during his meeting with the team.

Instead, Trump stuck to talking about hockey, praising the Panthers for their impressive season and congratulating them on their championship win. He even took the time to shoot a few pucks on the White House lawn with some of the players.

While some critics may have expected Trump to use the visit as an opportunity to discuss his administration’s trade policies, the president seemed content to leave those topics off the agenda for the day. Instead, he focused on celebrating the Panthers’ success and enjoying a lighthearted moment with the team.

It was a refreshing change of pace for Trump, who is known for his outspoken views on trade and tariffs. Perhaps he just wanted to take a break from those contentious issues and enjoy a moment of sportsmanship with the Stanley Cup champions.

His stint at Arsenal was forgettable but was good for Fulham, before leaving for Olympiakos last summer.

Willian’s time in Greece did not go to plan, leaving the club in December after making just 11 appearances.

However, that has not put off one of his former clubs, with Sky Sports reporting that talks are ongoing to bring him back to Craven Cottage.

As the Brazil international is a free agent the deal does not need to be completed before Monday night’s transfer deadline, but the move is close to being completed.

  • Chris McKenna Talks Replacing Charles Mesure (Exclusive)

In a surprise move, Chris McKenna has taken over the role of General Hospital’s Jack Brennan from Charles Mesure, who chose to leave the soap.

In a statement to Soap Opera Digest, a representative for GH stated, “Charles Mesure opted to exit the role of Brennan. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors. General Hospital looks forward to continuing Brennan’s exciting storyline with Chris McKenna in the role. “

For McKenna, who got his daytime start as One Life to Live’s Joey Buchanan from 1990-93 then popped up again on The Young and the Restless as Mark Harding from 2014-15, it was a quick hiring process. “I got word late on a Sunday night that Frank Valentini [executive producer, who was also the EP at OLTL] wanted me to chemistry read with Laura Wright [Carly Spencer],” he begins. “I know Laura, but I hadn’t seen her in 30 years, so I said, ‘Well, of course, I’ll be there.’ On Tuesday, I went in, and Laura saw me in the hallway and ran over. We hugged and said hello and we caught up really quick and she wished me luck. The last time I saw her, I think she was the pitcher and I was the catcher at a Make-A-Wish softball game in 1994. So, it was trippy.”

    Laura Wright and Chris McKenna

    Disney/Bahareh Ritter

McKenna was a teenager the last time he worked for Valentini, who had to adjust to the fact that he’s now a man. “I’ve run into Frank over the years a couple of times, but he still thinks of me as 14 years old,” notes McKenna. “So, I thought I was finally going to get in front of him and remind him that I’m an adult now [Laughs]. As soon as I finished the read with Laura, which seemed to go pretty darn well, Frank said, ‘You were not this good when you were 12.’ And I said, ‘No s**t!’ ”

McKenna reveals that he had no idea who he had been called in to play when he first arrived at the studio. “They wrote a scene for the audition that was in the spirit of Brennan, but they didn’t use the name,” he explains. “So, it was a unique scene just to get the feel of the character and to see how the chemistry was between Laura and me, and it was great. It was a lot of fun reading with her for the first time in forever.”

McKenna found some other familiar faces on the set as well. “It was crazy,” he marvels. “Some of the writers knew me from One Life to Live when I was a kid and said so. And I said, ‘Well, don’t think of me that way now. I was going through puberty on TV. It’s a whole other thing. I’m a cool spy now.’ Having Frank on set again is great, and one of the cameramen, Bruce, was one of the cameramen on One Life to Live and my favorite guy. I had no idea he was going to be there, and it was so great to see him. One of the directors, Gary Tomlin, was there, so I really felt comfortable right off the bat, and it felt a lot like coming home.”

The last time McKenna was on a soap was in 2016 when he did a brief run as Dr. Hayden on The Bold and the Beautiful. Nevertheless, he wasn’t intimidated by the challenge of stepping into a front-burner tale. “I was excited about it,” he shares. “That’s how I grew up; it’s the first thing I did. The lines and the speed were always easy for me because that’s how I learned. My first day, I had 40 pages to do, and Laura very sweetly wrote me a message and said, ‘Listen, don’t be daunted by the amount of pages. I’ll work with you and Eden [McCoy, Josslyn Jacks] will work with you and we’ll read together and it’ll be great.’ And I wrote her back and said, ‘Not daunted. Looking forward to it. Bring it on.’ And it was great. Y&R moved faster than One Life and GH moves faster than Y&R, but I love it. I’m really comfortable there.”

He’s also enjoying getting to know the ins and outs of his new alter ego. “I’m still learning who the guy is and figuring it out, but it is a lot of fun to get a chance to have a meaty character like this,” McKenna notes. “This is the type of character that I’ve been playing a lot the past decade, but a new version. I don’t usually play the guy in the suit; I’m in a tank top in the jungle, that kind of a CIA agent. So, this is a fun little twist on it, the more Bond-ian guy, if you will. It’s a lot of fun to be able to establish a new version of a character and have a new relationship with Laura and learn what’s in store. Every script is really exciting, so it’s fun.”

In between his soap gigs, McKenna worked steadily on a slew of primetime shows. He credits his daytime experience with helping him succeed in other mediums. “It’s hard to overstate the amount of training that you get doing 100 pages a day, getting new scripts, having a consistent job for years, and learning and getting better,” he declares. “I teach acting classes now, and I tell them how much they can learn on soaps and what a valuable training ground it is and how the actors on soaps are the hardest working actors in this industry and don’t get nearly enough credit.”

His most memorable nighttime gig was the 2014-15 series State of Affairs. “State of Affairs was great,” he recalls. “It had an amazing cast — Katherine Heigl, Alfre Woodard, David Harbour, just to name a few, and I had such a great character. Katherine Heigl had to go to bat for me and we had so much fun. It ended up being only a one-season deal, but that really changed everything for me and my career and the way I was perceived and really ushered in the next chapter where I got to play really cool guys like CIA agents and FBI agents. So, I’ll never forget that.”

He will also never forget the importance that One Life to Live played early in his career. “Growing up on TV was a crazy experience,” he reflects. “And now because I’m having all these memories unlocked going back, I hear Bruce’s voice, I hear Frank’s voice, and I feel like I’m right back there again. I didn’t realize how much I’d remember Laura’s laugh, but when heard it, it was I immediately like, ‘Oh, my God, it’s 1991.’ So I feel like there’s been a time jump, but It was really an amazing time back then and it was so important to my career and my life.”

He even heard from his soap mom when he booked his new role. “Erika Slezak [Viki Buchanan] apparently had just talked to Frank, and he told her that I was on the show, and she squealed and was so excited and she wrote me immediately to congratulate me, which is really great,” McKenna says. “She sends me Christmas cards and we exchange little messages, but that was the longest thing she’s written me, and I feel like we reconnected again because of that, so that was really cool. She’s my second mom. So, it’s really fun being back on daytime again with people who knew me back then and having another run at it.”

  • Trump says Microsoft in talks to buy TikTok

US President Donald Trump has said Microsoft is in discussions to acquire TikTok and that he would like to see a “bidding war” over the sale of the social media app.

When asked by reporters whether the US tech giant was preparing a bid, Trump replied: “I would say yes” – before adding that there was “great interest in TikTok” from several companies.

Both Trump and his predecessor Joe Biden have been trying for years to force TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell its US operations on national security grounds.

It comes as Trump signed an executive order last week to delay a Biden Administration ban on TikTok that briefly took the app offline for its 170m users in the United States.

Despite granting TikTok a 75-day reprieve from the ban, Trump had been the first president to start pressuring ByteDance to sell its app.

In August 2020, ByteDance approached Microsoft as a possible buyer – something which the US company’s chief executive later described as “the strangest thing“.

Later, TikTok chose rival Oracle as a potential partner – although that deal also never happened.

Trump has previously said that he was in discussions with several parties about purchasing TikTok and expects to make a decision on the app’s future within the next 30 days.

A spokesperson for Microsoft said the company had “nothing to share at this time”. The BBC has also reached out to TikTok for comment.

Earlier on Monday, the US president had addressed a gathering of Republican politicians in Florida and spoke about the proposed sale of TikTok.

“We’ll see what happens. We’re going to have a lot of people bidding on it,” he said.

“If we can save all that voice and all the jobs, and China won’t be involved, we don’t want China involved, but we’ll see what happens,” he added.

Previous names linked with buying TikTok include billionaire Frank McCourt and the Canadian businessman Kevin O’Leary – a celebrity investor on Shark Tank, the US version of Dragon’s Den.

The biggest YouTuber in the world Jimmy Donaldson – AKA MrBeast – has also claimed he is in the running after a number of investors contacted him following an earlier tweet signalling his interest.

In a recent development, President Donald Trump announced that Microsoft is in talks to acquire popular social media app TikTok. This news comes after Trump threatened to ban the app in the United States due to national security concerns.

The President stated that he had spoken with Microsoft’s CEO, Satya Nadella, about the potential acquisition and that the deal could be completed by September 15th. Trump also mentioned that the US government should receive a substantial portion of the sale price as part of the deal.

The Chinese-owned app has faced scrutiny from the US government over fears that user data could be accessed by the Chinese government. By selling to Microsoft, TikTok may be able to alleviate these concerns and continue operating in the US.

  • Netanyahu blows past ceasefire talks deadline to confer with Trump

    Jerusalem
    CNN
     —

A deadline to begin talks on extending Gaza’s ceasefire arrived Monday with the Israeli prime minister in Washington, silence from his office about when a negotiating team might engage with Hamas, and considerable uncertainty about what the next stage of the fragile truce will look like.

The ceasefire, in place for just over two weeks, is set to expire on March 1. Under the terms of the deal, talks on the next phase are supposed to begin no later than Monday.

But the Israeli government has yet to publicly unveil a negotiating team for the talks, let alone send them to Qatar or Egypt, where Hamas is sending a delegation this week. Hamas has not publicly commented on Monday’s deadline.

Qatar’s prime minister, who has acted as an intermediary in the talks, said Sunday that there were “no clear details” on when or how the talks would start. “We hope to see some movement in the coming days,” Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said during a press conference in Doha.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made clear that he sees the path forward not in Doha or Cairo, but in Washington, where he will this week become the first foreign leader to hold a formal meeting with US President Donald Trump.

Netanyahu’s office said on the eve of his departure that he had agreed with Trump’s Middle East envoy that “negotiations on the second phase of the hostage deal will begin with their meeting in Washington,” during which “they will discuss Israel’s positions.”

Since the ceasefire went into effect on January 19, Hamas and its allies have released 18 hostages held in Gaza. In exchange, the Israeli government has released 583 Palestinians held in detention – some serving life sentences for serious offenses – but also a significant number of children held without public charge or trial.

The ceasefire has seen the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gazan population centers, a surge of aid entering the enclave and, for the first time since May last year, the opening of the vital Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt for the evacuation of injured and sick Palestinians.

It has also largely held apart from a few violations – only the second respite in 15 months of war, after a brief truce in November 2023.

But the first phase of the truce was only ever meant to last 42 days. Talks for the second phase must begin Monday, the 16th day of the truce, meaning that Netanyahu is breaching the terms of the deal by talking to Trump first. Over that second period, CNN understands that the Israeli military would fully withdraw from Gaza and all living hostages, soldier and civilian, would be released in exchange for more Palestinian prisoners.

Chief among Netanyahu’s concerns this week will be what Trump wants. The American president was not yet in office during the first round of ceasefire talks, though his team played a large role in pushing Israel toward a deal.

“Our decisions and the courage of our soldiers have redrawn the map,” Netanyahu said on the tarmac of Ben Gurion Airport Sunday. “But I believe that, working closely with President Trump, we can redraw it even further and for the better.”

Palestinians, displaced from northern Gaza at Israel's order, walk north at the end of January.

But Gershon Baskin, a veteran Israeli negotiator and peace activist, said in a statement that Netanyahu’s “refusal to begin negotiations on the day stipulated in the agreement is a clear violation of the agreement.”

“Israel demands that Hamas adhere to all the terms of the agreement, while simultaneously violating it in a significant way. Once again, Netanyahu is abandoning the hostages and endangering them.”

Trump claimed credit for the current ceasefire and pledged upon taking office to end foreign wars. But he has also now repeated his desire for the 2 million people of Gaza to leave so that “we just clean out that whole thing.” The forced displacement of civilians can constitute “a war crime and/or crime against humanity,” according to the United Nations.

Trump’s proposal was music to the ears of the most extreme minister in Netanyahu’s governing coalition. Finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, who vehemently opposed the withdrawal of Israeli forces and settlers from Gaza in 2005, wants Jews to resettle in the enclave.

“Encouraging migration (of Palestinians out of Gaza) is the only solution that will bring peace and security to the residents of Israel and alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s Arab residents,” he said after Trump expressed his desire for Palestinians to leave.

Already one minister – the far-right Itamar Ben-Gvir – has withdrawn his party from the Israeli government over the ceasefire, calling it a capitulation. Smotrich has pledged he will do the same if Israel does not renew the war in Gaza when the current, first phase of the ceasefire expires.

Kareem Khadder, Mike Schwartz and Eyad Kourdi contributed to this report.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has once again disregarded the deadline for ceasefire talks with Hamas in order to confer with US President Donald Trump. The two leaders have a longstanding relationship, and it is no surprise that Netanyahu would prioritize discussing the situation in Gaza with Trump over adhering to the ceasefire deadline.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians and has sparked international outrage. Netanyahu’s decision to prioritize his conversation with Trump over reaching a ceasefire agreement shows where his allegiances lie and raises questions about his commitment to finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

As the situation in Gaza continues to escalate, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize diplomacy and work towards a ceasefire that will protect the lives of innocent civilians. Netanyahu’s decision to blow past the ceasefire talks deadline to confer with Trump only adds to the complexity of the situation and raises concerns about the future of peace negotiations in the region.
