2025 ZiPS Projections: Tampa Bay Rays

For the 21st consecutive season, the ZiPS projection system is unleashing a full set of prognostications. For more information on the ZiPS projections, please consult this year’s introduction and MLB’s glossary entry. The team order is selected by lot, and the next team up is the Tampa Bay Rays.

    Batters

Coming off a 99-win season, the Rays shed 19 games last year to finish at 80-82, their first losing record since 2017. While certainly some of that loss can be chalked up to Wander Franco’s troubling legal issues, which have likely brought an end to his baseball career, a blend of injuries and few pleasant surprises also played a big part in the Rays’ dropping out of solid contention. Two-thirds of last year’s projected starters, both in the lineup and the rotation, are gone, making this season a bit of a transition for Tampa Bay.

For a team that doesn’t spend money practically ever, and coming off a bloodbath of trades of youngish veterans, one could call the lineup projections surprisingly good. There are only a few positions that project to be below average, and even those spots aren’t disasters; in fact, every position on the team projects for more than 1 WAR. That’s a testament to the team’s player development system, which has to continually restock the shelves year after year because the organization doesn’t have enough money in the budget to bring in established talent through free agency.

Even so, the best parts of this lineup are rather uninspiring. ZiPS projects the Rays to get at least 3 WAR from only one position, second base, but I’m more skeptical than the Depth Charts are about Brandon Lowe’s ability to stay healthy. In the outfield, ZiPS doesn’t think Jonny DeLuca’s defense will be enough to make up for his bat, and it believes that Christopher Morel is best suited as a DH, where he may have the best chance to live up to his power potential.

But it’s not all bad. ZiPS does like some Rays players, just not the ones on the top of the depth chart – yet. Four of the top-eight WAR projections on offense are players who have not yet seized the primary jobs at their positions. Carson Williams is hardly unexpected, of course, given that he’s a top-five prospect. ZiPS thinks his bat is already acceptable for a starter in the middle infield, and the coordinate-based defensive system I use for the minor leagues thought he was one of the best fielding shortstops in the minors. He’s not the only minor leaguer to get defensive plaudits from ZiPS; third baseman Brayden Taylor also appears to be elite with the leather. He’s not as big a name as Williams, but my colleague Eric Longenhagen gave him a 45/70 evaluation for defense last year, and the Rays have liked his glove enough to give him some run at shortstop, something you don’t do with your third baseman if you think he’s a butcher. Going well down the prospect lists, catcher Dominic Keegan and center fielder Chandler Simpson also get very promising projections.

Sum it all up and the Rays have a solid offense with a lot of depth and a real future, but I’m not sure the upside will be realized this season.

    Pitchers

When you compare the innings pitched in the ZiPS projections and the ones listed on our Depth Charts, one conclusion I think you should draw is that the Rays are very reliant on getting healthy innings from Shane McClanahan and Drew Rasmussen. The projections gauge the two as the most talented pitchers on the team right now, so it’s understandable that the Rays would struggle if they’re without McClanahan for the entire season and Rasmussen for most of it due to their respective major elbow surgeries.

That’s not to say ZiPS hates the rest of the rotation, just that McClanahan and Rasmussen would change the whole complexion of the staff. Ryan Pepiot was the odd man out in Los Angeles, but he thrived as a solid no. 2 or 3 starter with the Rays, who just stuck him in the rotation and left him there. Taj Bradley showed great progress from his rookie season, getting hit a lot less hard last year, and Zack Littell showed that Tampa hasn’t lost its touch for taking other teams’ castoffs and transmogrifying them into above-average starters, almost instantly.

A surprising number of other pitchers project to be about league average as starters: Shane Baz, Joe Rock, Mason Montgomery, and Mike Vasil. A few of these guys will likely see some significant bullpen innings, especially Montgomery.

The Rays don’t have the high-end bullpen arms that the Twins or Guardians do, at least not according to ZiPS, but they do still have is an impressive amount of relief pitching depth. The majority of the bullpen projects to be better than average, but only Kevin Kelly and Pete Fairbanks do by a large margin, with the computer not being all that high on Edwin Uceta. If the projections prove accurate, this is a solid bullpen, but it’s probably not going to make or break their chances of reaching the postseason.

The Rays are a good team, but they likely aren’t a great one. ZiPS projects them to finish with 84-88 wins, enough to put them back into contention, but perhaps not enough to actually make the playoffs.

Players are listed with their most recent teams wherever possible. This includes players who are unsigned or have retired, players who will miss 2025 due to injury, and players who were released in 2024. So yes, if you see Joe Schmoe, who quit baseball back in August to form a Norwegian Ukulele Dixieland Jazz band that only covers songs by The Smiths, he’s still listed here intentionally. ZiPS is assuming a league with an ERA of 4.11.

Hitters are ranked by zWAR, which is to say, WAR values as calculated by me, Dan Szymborski, whose surname is spelled with a z. WAR values might differ slightly from those that appear in the full release of ZiPS. Finally, I will advise anyone against — and might karate chop anyone guilty of — merely adding up WAR totals on a depth chart to produce projected team WAR. It is important to remember that ZiPS is agnostic about playing time, and has no information about, for example, how quickly a team will call up a prospect or what veteran has fallen into disfavor.

As always, incorrect projections are either caused by misinformation, a non-pragmatic reality, or by the skillful sabotage of our friend and former editor. You can, however, still get mad at me on Twitter or on BlueSky.

The Tampa Bay Rays have always been a team known for their innovative strategies and roster construction, and the 2025 season looks to be no different. With the latest ZiPS projections released, let’s take a look at what the future holds for the Rays.

Starting with the pitching staff, the Rays are projected to have a strong rotation led by ace pitcher Tyler Glasnow. ZiPS predicts Glasnow to have a dominant season with a 3.20 ERA and 200+ strikeouts. Joining him in the rotation are young arms Shane Baz and Shane McClanahan, who are both projected to have breakout seasons.

In the bullpen, the Rays are expected to continue their trend of using a mix of traditional relievers and “openers.” Closer Nick Anderson is projected to have another stellar season, while Fireballer Pete Fairbanks is predicted to have a breakout year as a setup man.

On the offensive side, the Rays are projected to have a balanced lineup with a mix of power and speed. Outfielder Randy Arozarena is expected to lead the team in home runs and stolen bases, while infielders Wander Franco and Vidal Brujan are projected to have high on-base percentages.

Overall, the 2025 season looks bright for the Tampa Bay Rays according to ZiPS projections. With a strong pitching staff and a well-rounded lineup, the Rays will be a team to watch in the coming years.

  • 2025 ZiPS Projections: Tampa Bay Rays

Ballpark graphic is Dan’s mockup of George M. Steinbrenner Field. Depth charts constructed by way of those listed here. Size of player names is very roughly proportional to Depth Charts playing time. The final team projections may differ considerably from our Depth Charts playing time.

  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers S Jordan Whitehead Involved in Car Accident, Placed on NFI List

Tampa Bay Buccaneers S Jordan Whitehead Involved in Car Accident, Placed on NFI List

Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety Jordan Whitehead has been placed on the team’s Non-Football Injury List after being injured in an automobile accident that took place on Saturday, per the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud.

While no details are known on the exact nature of the accident, Whitehead is confirmed to be okay overall but his injuries are set to keep him out for “multiple weeks”, per Stroud. That would keep him out of the playoffs and end his season, just one game after he returned to the team after suffering a pectoral injury against the New York Giants in Week 12.

Whitehead was brought back to the team in the 2024 offseason after spending two years with the New York Jets. Injuries have hampered him, dealing with quad injuries and then a pectoral injury against the Giants that kept him out until Week 17’s game against the Panthers. Now, after the accident, he’ll be sidelined once again.

With Whitehead now missing, Tampa Bay’s top three safeties to begin the year — Antoine Winfield Jr., Jordan Whitehead and Christian Izien — will not be playing against the New Orleans Saints. Whitehead will be out for the rest of the season. so if Winfield Jr. can make it back in time for the playoffs, he will operate alongside newly re-acquired safety Mike Edwards.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have announced that safety Jordan Whitehead has been involved in a car accident and has been placed on the Non-Football Injury list. The team has not provided details on the extent of his injuries or how long he is expected to be out.

Whitehead, a key member of the Buccaneers’ defense, has been a reliable presence in the secondary and is known for his hard-hitting style of play. The team will likely need to rely on other players to step up in his absence.

We wish Jordan Whitehead a speedy recovery and hope to see him back on the field soon. Stay tuned for updates on his condition as more information becomes available.

  • Alabama football arrives in Tampa, How to Watch Friday Bowl Games

Alabama football arrives in Tampa, How to Watch Friday Bowl Games

Happy Friday, everyone. There are five bowl games on for you today including four featuring SEC teams, two of which were the losses that knocked Alabama out of the playoffs. At 11am, Oklahoma will face Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl. At 2:30 you’ll have the Birmingham Bowl between Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech, Arkansas plays Texas Tech in the Liberty at 6pm, and then Texas A&M closes the day at 9:30 against USC. All of those will be on ESPN, while Fox has a prime time Holiday Bowl matchup of Syracuse vs Washington State for the true college football masochist junkie.

Use this as your open thread to discuss the action.

Alabama and Michigan have arrived in Tampa.

“It’s a huge deal for Tampa, with the TV exposure — ESPN at noon on New Year’s Eve — and the exposure of fans coming to the Tampa Bay area and seeing that, yes, we are open after the hurricanes we’ve had.”

Both teams will enjoy sunshine-filled festivities before the game next week.

“Well, the teams are here to play football, so there are a few practice sessions, but there will also be a day for them at Busch Gardens and a beach day on Sunday, where thousands of the fans will be at Clearwater Beach, and hopefully they can enjoy warmer weather than Michigan.”

Bowl games are supposed to be rewards for teams that had positive seasons, complete with a little vacation experience for the players. The playoff has cheapened them, and that will never not be sad.

Alabama will bring a nearly full squad to the game, and Tyler Booker intends on taking care of business.

Alabama (9-3) was the last team omitted from the new 12-team playoff format, while the Wolverines (7-5) weren’t even in the running.

That represents quite a descent for a Michigan program that beat Alabama 27-20 in overtime in last season’s CFP semifinal at the Rose Bowl before rolling to a 34-13 victory over Washington in the championship game.

The New Year’s Eve game is more for pride this season with no true way to salvage the season.

But Alabama standout guard Tyler Booker has found a goal worth fighting for — stretching the Crimson Tide’s streak of 10-win seasons to 17.

“There’s a lot of goals that we had set out in front of us before this year took place,” Booker told reporters. “And, obviously, we can’t achieve most of those goals now. But one of the goals that is left to achieve is reaching 10 wins. So that’s at the forefront of our minds right now, and going out to Tampa and getting a ‘W’.”

Michigan is in a different place roster-wise, as several prominent players have opted out, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t good players waiting in the wings.

Michigan will see a changing of the guard at a few positions this week, but it may be most prevalent along the defensive line. With Graham, Grant and Stewart not expected to play, Michigan will be without 96 quarterback pressures, 56 run stops, 15.0 sacks and 26.5 tackles for loss.

Still, this is maybe the one position group on the entire team that has proven it reloads more often than it rebuilds. So which players will we be watching to see in extended action against Alabama?

-With reports surfacing that Barham may finally get an extended run at edge next year (NFL scouts view his long-term potential there), Tuesday could be a showcase of that.

-Derrick Moore and TJ Guy have said they are returning to Michigan for the 2025 season, but those decisions are always fluid and could change with a big game against Alabama’s offensive line. Still, they could introduce themselves as Michigan’s next star edge duo.

Kennington Smith III examines Alabama’s portal needs that still need to be filled.

Safety: Smith’s departure was the most consequential of any for Alabama as he was a starter in 2024 in the slot and would’ve been in 2025. There are still some good pieces behind him in DaShawn Jones and Red Morgan, but the safety position could use some more experience. The front-line starters seem strong: Sabb, Bray Hubbard and Jones/Morgan, but there’s a considerable gap in depth. A versatile defensive back with some game experience would be a nice addition.

Offensive/defensive line: The defensive line is going to be hit hard. James Smith is an exciting young player, and adding Collins helps, but this group could use an impactful player if one emerges from a Playoff roster or in the spring portal window. The interior of the offensive line was addressed with the addition of Dewberry. It would be nice to add another tackle who can provide some competition.

Not sure why he’s classifying the Husky position as a safety, but finding someone who can be successful in that spot will be critical. Hubbard and Sabb should be fine on the back end. Some additional reinforcements along both lines are always welcome.

Last, I failed to mention that Alabama got a 2026 in-state commit yesterday.

The 6-foot-1, 174-pound Gibson was high school teammates with current Alabama defensive back Dre Kirkpatrick Jr., whose father, Dre Kirkpatrick Sr., played in the NFL after his own Crimson Tide career. Gibson and the Titans finished the 2024 season 6-4, and fell to Clay-Chalkville in the playoffs.

Alabama just wrapped up its 2025 recruiting class, Kalen DeBoer’s first full cycle as the Crimson Tide’s head coach. DeBoer’s initial effort was fairly successful, ranking as the No. 2 class nationally, beyond only Texas according to the 247 composite.

Needless to say, it’s a long time until next December in the wild and woolly world of college football recruiting.

That’s about it for today. Have a great weekend.

    Roll Tide.
