Tanner Scott, Dodgers agree to contract (source)

Fresh off adding prized Japanese right-hander Roki Sasaki, the Dodgers made an another move to massively upgrade their pitching staff, agreeing with left-handed reliever Tanner Scott on a four-year, $72 million contract, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand on Sunday. The team has not confirmed the deal.

Scott has been one of baseball’s most effective and filthiest relievers over the past two seasons. During that time split between the Marlins and Padres, the 30-year-old southpaw has sat in the 90th percentile or better in whiff rate (34.7%) and hard-hit rate (27.5%).

Batters hit just .134 with a .179 slugging percentage off Scott’s high-90s four-seamer last season; those averages ranked second and first, respectively, among the pitchers who threw a minimum of 300 four-seamers last year. Scott’s heater and hard, high-80s slider each get a couple more inches of vertical drop compared to similar four-seamers and sliders, which contributes to his impressive 51.2% ground-ball rate since the beginning of 2023.

A sixth-round pick by the Orioles in the 2014 Draft, Scott produced a 4.73 ERA and a .738 opponents’ OPS in five seasons coming out of Baltimore’s bullpen. He was dealt to Miami just before the start of the 2022 season and eventually became the team’s closer. He saved 20 games that year, but also recorded a 4.31 ERA. Scott walked 46 batters in 62 2/3 innings and had a pedestrian 29.1% chase rate.

The following season, that chase rate soared to 35.3%, which was third best in MLB (min. 500 out-of-zone pitches). Creating a tremendous amount of swing-and-miss and soft contact, Scott ended 2023 with a 2.31 ERA and a .527 opponents’ OPS. He was lights-out leading up to last season’s Trade Deadline, registering a 1.18 ERA over 45 2/3 innings before heading to the Padres in a six-player swap.

Scott finished the year by recording a 1.75 ERA and a scant 25.7 hard-hit rate after the trade. He also produced an 8.0% walk rate, a big improvement for Scott, who arrived in San Diego with a career walk rate of 13.0%, well above the league average.

Tanner Scott, Dodgers agree to contract

The Los Angeles Dodgers have reached an agreement with left-handed reliever Tanner Scott, according to sources. The deal is reportedly for two years with a club option for a third year.

Scott’s last two seasons have been something to behold. In 150 innings, he’s notched a 2.04 ERA and has struck out more than 31% of the batters he’s faced. Not bad for someone who came into his age-28 season equipped with a 4.61 ERA. Scott has two big-time offerings: a 97 mph rising heater and a devastating slider that generated nearly 40% whiffs in 2024. He has battled his command throughout his career, but otherwise he’s a compelling candidate to be known as the best and nastiest anonymous reliever in the game.

For his career, the 30-year-old Scott has an ERA+ of 125. Over the last two seasons, however, that ERA+ figure is 224. The Dodgers are no doubt hoping that the more recent, upgraded version of Scott prevails moving forward.

Tanner Scott Could Sign This Weekend

The market may be heating up for free agency’s top reliever. Jon Morosi of the MLB Network reports that Tanner Scott is weighing multiple multi-year offers and may choose his team by this weekend.

Morosi suggests that the Cubs are among Scott’s top suitors. Chicago president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said this week that the bullpen is “probably the area we’ve been focused on most in free agency.” There’d be no bigger upgrade than Scott, though that’d be an out-of-character move for Hoyer’s front office. The Cubs have not signed a free agent reliever to a multi-year deal or a guarantee above $9MM in more than five years.

Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic writes that while the Cubs do indeed like Scott, they may be reluctant to meet the asking price. Previous reporting has suggested that Scott’s annual salary could approach $20MM on what’d presumably be a three- or four-year contract. Even if the money doesn’t quite get to that level, this would be a major investment. Scott should easily land the top reliever deal of the winter.

The Dodgers have been tied to Scott for months. After landing Roki Sasaki, a back-end reliever is the last box on L.A.’s offseason checklist. The Braves have also shown interest, while the Mets were more recently reported as a suitor. That no longer seems to be the case. New York agreed to terms with A.J. Minter on a two-year, $22MM guarantee this afternoon. Mike Puma of The New York Post reports that the Minter deal means the Mets are expected to drop their run at Scott.

Scott has been one of the best relievers in baseball for two seasons. He fired 78 innings of 2.31 ERA ball for the Marlins in 2023. The 30-year-old southpaw was even better last year. Scott earned his first All-Star nod and combined for a sterling 1.75 earned run average through 72 frames between Miami and the Padres. He averages nearly 97 MPH on his fastball and has punched out at least 28% of opposing hitters in three straight seasons.

Why Yankees Aren’t Pursuing Top Left-Handed Reliever Tanner Scott

All indications are that the New York Yankees‘ top priority at this point in the offseason is signing a left-handed reliever.

The Athletic’s Brendan Kuty revealed in a January 15 article that there are three southpaws the Yankees have expressed interest in.

“As of Tuesday, the team’s biggest priority seemed to be adding a left-handed reliever, with names such as Tim Hill, Brooks Raley and Andrew Chafin each being discussed, according to a league source,” Kuty wrote.

While all three of these relievers would be great additions for the Yankees, conspicuous by his absence is Tanner Scott. During the 2024 regular season with the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres, Scott posted a 9-6 record with a 1.75 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 72 innings pitched.

How Tanner Scott still hasn’t netted a deal in Free Agency as we near mid-January is mind-boggling to me.

The Yankees reportedly met with Scott earlier this month. However, a January 16 article from MLB.com conveyed why he isn’t currently among their top left-handed relief targets.

“The top reliever left on the open market, Tanner Scott, is also left-handed. But with the Yankees’ estimated luxury tax payroll at about $303 million, per FanGraphs’ Roster Resource — which is slightly above the highest luxury tax threshold for the 2025 season — they seem to be looking at more cost-effective arms such as that aforementioned trio,” the article wrote.

“The Yankees could give themselves some financial flexibility by trading starting pitcher Marcus Stroman, who is owed $18.5 million this season and has an $18 million vesting option for 2026… Even if they do find a match, they could use those savings to address their opening at second base rather than bring in a top-flight reliever.”

This money-saving sentiment certainly makes sense, especially considering the Yankees already traded for elite closer Devin Williams this offseason (and also still have Luke Weaver).

But New York fans would not have complained if Scott was also brought to the Bronx.
