    The company said its business strategy will still include recruiting and retaining team members “who represent the communities” Target serves and “fuel a culture where everyone has access to opportunity and growth, enabling [the] team to deliver business results.”

    Several large companies also have pulled back from diversity, equity and inclusion goals as President Donald Trump signed an executive order aimed at ending DEI programs across the federal government. Per the Associated Press, that included revoking all DEI mandates, policies, preferences and activities, along with the review and revision of existing employment practices, union contracts, and training policies or programs.

    Walmart, McDonald’s , Ford, Harley-Davidson and John Deere are some brands that have scaled back DEI commitments in recent months. Costco, however, reaffirmed its commitment.

  • Target rolls back major DEI initiatives


    Target on Friday said it’s rolling back diversity, equity and inclusion programs — including some that aim to make its workforce and merchandise better reflect its customers.

    In a memo sent to its employees, the Minneapolis-based retailer said it will end its three-year DEI goals, stop reports to external diversity-focused groups like the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index and end a program focused on carrying more products from Black- or minority-owned businesses.

    The memo was sent to staff Friday and viewed by CNBC. It was written by Kiera Fernandez, chief community impact and equity officer for Target.

    “Many years of data, insights, listening and learning have been shaping this next chapter in our strategy,” she said in the memo. “And as a retailer that serves millions of consumers every day, we understand the importance of staying in step with the evolving external landscape, now and in the future – all in service of driving Target’s growth and winning together.”

    A Target spokesperson said there are no job cuts as part of Friday’s DEI announcement.

    With the move, the Minneapolis-based discounter joins a growing list of companies including Tractor Supply, Facebook’s parent Meta, Walmart and McDonald’s that have dropped DEI-related pledges and goals. Some of those companies faced pressure from conservative activists or cited the Supreme Court’s ruling blocking affirmative action at colleges — which may not compel corporations to take any action on the issue.

    The company’s decision also follows President Donald Trump’s executive orders, made almost immediately after his Inauguration, to end the government’s DEI programs and put federal officials overseeing those initiatives on leave.

    Not all companies have joined the trend. On Thursday, Costco said at its annual meeting that more than 98% of shareholders voted against a proposal to review risks of its DEI programs. Costco’s board of director had urged shareholders to vote it down.

    Many corporations’ diversity commitments, including Target’s go back for years and were strengthened in the wake of the “Black Lives Matter” protests and the murder of George Floyd in 2020.

    Four years ago, Target CEO Brian Cornell said the murder — which happened just a short distance from Target’s headquarters in its hometown — felt personal. He said it motivated him to step up Target’s diversity and equity efforts.

    “That could have been one of my Target team members,” he said at the time, recounting his thoughts as he watched the video of Floyd taking his final breaths.

    Target expanded its diversity goals at the time, saying it would increase representation of Black employees across its workforce by 20% over the next year. The company started a new program to help Black entrepreneurs develop, test and scale products to sell at mass retailers like Target. And it promised to spend more than $2 billion with Black-owned businesses by 2025, from construction companies that build or remodel stores to advertising firms that market its brand.

    The company and its foundation also gave $10 million to support social justice groups, including the National Urban League and African American Leadership Forum.

    On its website in recent years, Target has touted Cornell’s and the company’s “steadfast commitment to stand with Black families and fight against racism.” In other posts on its website, the company provided updates on its efforts to add more officers of color, reduce turnover of people of color and increase promotions of women and minorities.

    One post was titled “We Are Never Done,” and started off with a quote from Black poet and civil rights activist Maya Angelou.

    Target dissolved the goals at a time when conservative politicians and activists have increasingly turned their focus on company efforts to be more inclusive.

    Target had already felt the heat from conservative groups over some of its other longstanding initiatives. About two years ago, the retailer pulled items from its Pride Month collection after backlash and threats to employees about some merchandise it sold, such as “tuck-friendly” swimsuits for trans people.

    Cornell said in 2023 that the backlash contributed to weaker quarterly sales for the company. He said, however, that it would continue to mark heritage months with merchandise collections, such as Black History Month and Pride Month.

    Target’s employee base had grown more diverse in recent years.

    About 43% of Target’s workforce was white, 31% was Hispanic/Latino, 15% was Black, and 5% was Asian in the fiscal year that ended early February 2024, according to the company’s most recent diversity report.

    The company’s leadership team is less diverse than its overall workforce. Seventy-two percent of the leadership was white, followed by 11% Hispanic/Latino, 11% Asian and 6% Black.

    NEW YORK (AP) — Discount store chain Target said Friday that it would join rival Walmart and a number of other prominent American brands in scaling back diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that have come under attack from conservative activists and, as of this week, the White House.

    The Minneapolis-based retailer said the changes to its “Belonging at the Bulleye” strategy would include ending a program it established to help Black employees build meaningful careers, improve the experience of Black shoppers and to promote Black-owned businesses following the police killing of George Floyd in 2020.

    Target, which operates nearly 2,000 stores nationwide and employs more than 400,000 people, said it also would conclude the diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, goals it previously set in three-year cycles.

    The goals included hiring and promoting more women and members of racial minority groups, and recruiting more diverse suppliers, including businesses owned by people of color, women, LGBTQ+ people, veterans and people with disabilities.

    In a memo to employees, Kiera Fernandez, Target’s chief community impact and equity officer, as a “next chapter” in a decades-long process to create “inclusive work and guest environments that welcome all.”

    There’s no doubt the U.S. civil rights landscape has undergone a massive transformation in the five years since much of corporate America adopted DEI goals in response to the Black Lives Matter protests that followed Floyd’s death in Minneapolis.

    A 2023 U.S. Supreme Court decision that outlawed affirmative action in college admissions emboldened conservative groups to bring or threaten lawsuits targeting corporate initiatives such as employee resource groups and hiring practices that prioritize historically marginalized groups.

    Walmart, McDonald’s , Ford, Harley-Davison and John Deere are among the well-known consumer brands that reduced or phased out their DEI commitments in recent months.

    President Donald Trump this week signaled his administration’s agreement with conservatives who argue that policies designed to increase minority representation by considering factors such as race, gender and sexual orientation are unconstitutional.

    On his first day in office, Trump signed an executive order aimed at ending DEI programs across the federal government. The order calls for revoking all DEI mandates, policies, preferences and activities, along with the review and revision of existing employment practices, union contracts, and training policies or programs.

    Getting corporations to withdraw from the Human Rights Campaign’s Corporate Equality Index and to stop sponsoring Pride activities have been goals of DEI opponents.

    Steering clear of a backlash from conservative customers and organizations is something that Target has tried to navigate for a while. As transgender rights became a more prominent issue in 2016, the company declared that “inclusivity is a core belief at Target” and said it supported transgender employees and customers using whichever restroom or fitting room “corresponds with their gender identity.”

    But after some customers threatened to boycott Target stores, the company said that more stores would make available a single-toilet bathroom with a door that could be locked.

    In 2023, Target removed some of its Pride Month merchandise after online complaints and in-store confrontations that the retailer said threatened employees’ well-being. The company decided last year not to stock Pride Month products at every U.S. store.

    Still, some prominent companies have resisted public pressure to retreat from their diversity plans. On Thursday, Costco shareholders rejected a proposal urging the wholesale club operator to evaluate any risks posed by its diversity, equity and inclusion practices.

    According to preliminary results shared by Costco executives, more than 98% of shares voted against the proposal submitted by a conservative think tank based in Washington. Costco’s board of directors had recommended a no vote.

    Target’s announcement comes as pressure mounts on major corporations, particularly from social media influencers such Robby Starbuck, to scale back on initiatives that purport to increase racial and gender equality in the workplace. The initiatives have also faced fierce criticism from Trump, who on Tuesday signed an executive order directing government agencies to investigate DEI programs at publicly traded corporations, large nonprofit corporations or associations and foundations with assets of at least $500 million. Target falls under that category. 

    “Illegal DEI and DEIA policies not only violate the text and spirit of our longstanding Federal civil-rights laws, they also undermine our national unity, as they deny, discredit, and undermine the traditional American values of hard work, excellence, and individual achievement in favor of an unlawful, corrosive, and pernicious identity-based spoils system,” the executive order said.

    Fernandez said that Target recruits and retains employees “who represent the communities we serve,” but moving forward, she said it will stop all external diversity-focused surveys, including HRC’s Corporate Equality Index.

    A slew of companies, including Amazon, Lowe’s, Meta, McDonald’s, American Airlines and Boeing, have pulled back on their DEI programs as pressure increased over the past several months. In November, Walmart, the nation’s largest private employer, announced plans to roll back its polices, including how it monitors products within its marketplace and reviews grant funding.

    By contrast, some companies have resisted activist pressure, publicly reaffirming their commitment to maintaining DEI policies.

    Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said in the tech firm’s annual report in October that it continues to ensure that its “workforce represents the planet we serve and the products we build always meet our customers’ needs” and that it continues to “hire, develop, and grow a global workforce that best supports each other and our customers.”

    Pinterest Chief Legal Officer Wanji Walcott posted on LinkedIn that the company is “laser-focused on advancing inclusion and diversity both within our organization and on our platform, investing in critical initiatives like pay equity internally and body inclusivity externally.” 

    Still, anti-woke activist Starbuck, who has been taking credit for companies scaling back or ending their DEI programs, stated he has no intention of stopping his campaign anytime soon.

It’s unclear whether the number encompasses the people Trump “border czar” Tom Homan is targeting: criminals who lack legal status and immigrants with deportation orders.

    After weeks of preparation by Chicago’s immigrant communities, and a weekend full of fear amid multiple reports that the city would serve as the first major raid, there were no reports of immigration enforcement on Tuesday.

    On Friday, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration’s immigration raids would begin in Chicago Tuesday morning, citing sources familiar with the planning. But by Saturday, Homan told the Washington Post that federal authorities were reconsidering whether to launch immigration raids in Chicago after details began to leak.

    At an unrelated news conference on Tuesday, Pritzker said the Trump Administration has not communicated with his administration about their plan.

    “We have heard that they’re targeting as many as 2,000 people initially in the city of Chicago alone,” Pritzker said. “I don’t know whether they’ll effectuate that or how, and I want to be clear about what my position is and what the law is. If there are violent criminals who have been convicted of violent crimes, who are undocumented, they are supposed to be deported. That is the law of the United States and has been for quite a long time. I don’t want them in my state. I don’t want them in the country.”

    Pritzker said a visit to Pilsen and Little Village’s empty storefronts on Monday served as proof that Trump’s plan is once again stoking fear in Chicago’s immigrant neighborhoods.

    “I was in businesses yesterday that were relatively empty because people are afraid to show up,” Pritzker said. “Because even documented immigrants, even citizens who are from another country but now are citizens of the United States have relatives who are undocumented. They’re afraid. That is what this president is doing, and it’s wrong.”

    Speaking with CNN’s Dana Bash on Tuesday, Homan reiterated that he’s targeting people in the country lacking legal status who have a criminal conviction. He said he wants access to criminals in jails in sanctuary cities, to arrest them “in the safety and security of a county jail.”

    But Homan said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers also plan to go into communities to find these criminals — and others may be arrested along with them.

    “We will find him, but when we find him, he may be with others. Others that don’t have a criminal conviction are in the country illegally. They will be arrested too,” Homan said. “So, there’s going to — there’s going to be more collateral arrests in sanctuary cities because they forced us to go in the community and find — and find the guy we’re looking for.”

    Homan also downplayed the attention on Chicago, despite his own claims in December at a GOP holiday party that the city would serve as ground zero for his plan.

  • Trump’s executive orders target trans and nonbinary people – DW – 01/22/2025


    US President Donald Trump has had a busy first few days in office. He has signed more than 100 executive orders, directives the president can give to federal agencies and departments without having to consult Congress. Several of them were related to LGBTQ+ rights.

    During his inauguration speech, Trump announced that under his leadership the US government would only recognize two genders. This means that the government will not allow nonbinary and intersex people, who are neither male nor female, to have their identities reflected on their passports and other official documents.

    “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female,” the executive order Trump signed on day one of his second term reads. “These sexes are not changeable and are grounded in fundamental and incontrovertible reality.”

    The order, titled “Defending Women From Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government,” also makes clear that the US government does not recognize transgender people’s identities any longer.

    Trump: ‘False claim’

    “Across the country, ideologues who deny the biological reality of sex have increasingly used legal and other socially coercive means to permit men to self-identify as women and gain access to intimate single-sex spaces and activities designed for women,” the presidential directive states. “This is wrong.”

    It is a “false claim,” according to Trump’s executive order, that people born with a prostate could “identify as and thus become women and vice versa.”

    There are about 1.6 million transgender people in the United States aged 13 and older, according to the Williams Institute School of Law at the University of California, Los Angeles. The American Medical Association (AMA) is in favor of facilitating gender-affirming health care, which is any medical care that helps people transition to the gender they identify with.  

    Receiving this care is important for transgender people; the AMA states that such care “has been linked to dramatically reduced rates of suicide attempts [and] decreased rates of depression and anxiety.”

    No more diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives

    Trump also signed an executive order to end all “diversity, equity, and inclusion” initiatives in federal departments and agencies. According to supporters, DEI programs ensure that underrepresented groups — be that based on race, gender or other markers — get a fair chance and equal treatment in the workplace. Opponents call DEI initiatives “immoral discrimination programs” and “public waste,” as Trump’s directive states.

    In addition to signing his own executive orders, the US president can also reverse those signed by his predecessor. Trump on the first day of his second term revoked a Joe Biden directive titled “Preventing and Combating Discrimination on the Basis of Gender Identity or Sexual Orientation.”

    It ordered all federal departments to review and, if necessary, revise their policies prohibiting sex discrimination to make sure that they also banned discrimination against members of LGBTQ+ communities. This is no longer valid.

    What will the effects of Trump’s executive orders be?

    Since 2022, US citizens were able to select X as a sex marker on their passports instead of M or F for “male” or “female.” It is unclear as of yet what will happen with passports that currently have the X mark. But since only two genders are recognized by the Trump administration, people who identify as nonbinary or intersex will not be able to receive new documents that reflect that identity any longer. This can also be an obstacle to having their identity recognized elsewhere, for example at school or at work.

    Not recognizing transgender and nonbinary identities comes with a slew of consequences for the people affected. Trans people are now unable to change their sex on government documents to align their IDs with their gender identity. The order also puts a stop to the requirement at federal government workplaces that transgender employees be referred to by their preferred pronouns.

    Since the government will only recognize a person as being the gender they were assigned at birth, transgender women will be sent to men’s prisons. And transgender employees at federal government departments and agencies will have to use the restrooms of the sex they were born with, not the one they identify as.

    All DEI officers at federal agencies and departments are on paid leave starting Wednesday as their initiatives will be shut down.

    The rescinding of Biden’s executive order means that there is no regulation for employers distinctly stating that they cannot discriminate against employees with LGBTQ+ identities. This could include a transgender person trying and failing to get their employer to refer to them by the pronouns that match their identity, or someone being excluded from networking events because they wanted to bring their same-sex spouse.

    LGBTQ+ communities, allies appalled

    Though conservatives are seeing some of their wishes realized by Trump’s executive orders, advocates for and allies of LGBTQ+ communities are appalled. They say that some of their hard-fought wins over the past few years are being rolled back, something they are not ready to accept.

    “We refuse to back down or be intimidated,” said Kelley Robinson, president of the Human Rights Campaign, the largest LGBTQ+ rights advocacy group in the United States. “We are not going anywhere, and we will fight back against these harmful provisions with everything we’ve got.”

    Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, is strongly opposed to the newly signed regulations stating that gender is a binary and unchangeable. 

    “No executive action, no legislative action for that matter, can erase the reality of diversity across gender in our society,” McBride, who represents Delaware in the House of Representatives, told US broadcaster NBC.
