James Tavernier makes candid Rangers form confession

Tavernier was a guest on the talkSPORT breakfast show and co-host Ally McCoist was eager to find out how the 33-year-old deemed his own recent performances and get a deeper dive into the way he’s adapted under current Rangers manager Philippe Clement, who admitted the experienced defender wasn’t impressed that his minutes had been reduced over the past six months.

McCoist began by asking, “What about your own form, James? Are you happy with it? because people would not believe actually, if I’m being brutally honest, that your goalscoring record from that particular position is nothing short of remarkable. Are you happy with your own form?”

The ex-Rangers striker went on to reference Tavernier’s relationship with Connor Goldson, who was allowed to leave Ibrox in the summer, and suggested that the strong bond with his centre-back helped his overall contributions.

“Yeah, me and Connor had a really good relationship,” Tavernier said.

“We played a good four or five years with each other and we had an understanding. He just let me bomb up and down the pitch.

“Especially when Gio [van Bronckhorst] came in, he just gave us an unlimited licence to go forward, and that’s probably when you see us arriving at that back post a lot more.

“Obviously this season you would have a complete different set-up with the team, so it’s just about adapting.

“Personally, I think I started the season off slow from what I normally am. I didn’t get a pre-season like normal then I started finding some form and got injured. It’s now about finding that form again and pushing the boys on.”

McCoist wouldn’t allow the chat to end there as he revealed that he was heading over to Paris Saint-Germain versus Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday night before providing commentary on Rangers’ Europa League showdown with Manchester United the following evening.

While it’s confirmed that the Rangers icon will be present at the upcoming Battle of Britain fixture, he couldn’t resist making a playful request to the Light Blues skipper.

Tavernier began answering to a question about a large Rangers support heading down to Manchester, stating: “The lucky ones will get tickets. I believe there’s going to be a lot of people…”

McCoist then chimed in, telling the Rangers right-back: “I’m needing two off of you by the way!”

“Maybe, you’re a bit too late now,” Tavernier laughed.

McCoist, reaffirming his stance, replied: “You think I’m joking – I’m not joking!”

Rangers captain James Tavernier has opened up about his recent dip in form, admitting that he has not been performing at his best in recent matches. The right-back, who has been a key player for the Scottish side, has struggled to make an impact on the pitch in recent weeks.

Speaking to reporters, Tavernier said, “I have to hold my hands up and admit that I haven’t been at my best lately. I know that I need to do better for the team and I am determined to turn things around.”

The 29-year-old added, “I take my role as captain very seriously and I know that I need to lead by example. I will be working hard in training to improve my performances and help the team achieve our goals.”

Tavernier’s honesty and determination to improve will surely be welcomed by Rangers fans, who will be hoping to see their captain back to his best in the coming matches.

The Light Blues head south for the huge Battle of Britain clash sitting in a strong position.

Philippe Clement‘s side are eighth in the Europa League table, just a place behind United.

The top eight teams will advance to the round of 16 proper, with teams ranked ninth to 24th heading for a prior play-off round.

Regardless, Rangers are in a strong position to go on and secure knockout football with just two games remaining.

First up, it’s Old Trafford in a game with plenty of intrigue.

Man Utd are in crisis mode, with boss Ruben Amorim admitting his side might be the WORST in the club’s history.

While the Gers have been inconsistent domestically, they’re unbeaten away from home in Europe this season and the might just fancy their chances of an almighty scalp.

Captain James Tavernier joined Ally McCoist and Jeff Stelling on the talkSPORT Breakfast Show to preview the game.

He revealed the Gers are excited about the game and are heading into it hopeful of getting a famous victory.

Tavernier said: “You’ve got to fancy yourself against anybody. Obviously they’re going through a difficult patch at the minute, so yeah, we were obviously going to work on what we believe they’re going to be setting themselves up to do against us.

“Work really hard in the next couple of days and put that game plan into the game and hopefully we can get that win.”

While Tavernier will be on the pitch, Ibrox great McCoist will be in the commentary box at Old Trafford.

But although his attendance is confirmed, the Gers icon still had a cheeky request for the Light Blues captain!

Tavernier began responding to a question about the Rangers fans, saying: “The lucky ones will get tickets. I believe there’s going to be a lot of people…”

McCoist then interrupted, telling Tavernier: “I’m needing two off of you by the way!”

Tavernier, laughing, replied: “Maybe you’re a bit too late now!”

McCoist, doubling down, responded: “You think I’m joking – I’m not joking!”

Attention turned back onto the game itself, with McCoist asking Tavernier about Rangers’ impressive European away form.

The Light Blues have beaten Malmo and Nice on the road this season, as well as securing an impressive draw in Greece against Olympiacos.

It’s a contrast to Rangers’ domestic away form which has left a lot to be desired.

Tavernier said: “Obviously, the other teams have a lot more possession. It’s more of an open game. Defensively, we’ve been really doing well when it comes to that.

“Obviously, the transitions we’ve been really effective.

“But yeah, it’s obviously different compared to domestic, we’ve just really taken it within our stride to take advantage of the teams that are expected maybe to beat us, we’re maybe going into games as underdogs and we really are performing.”

Former Rangers player and current pundit Ally McCoist has made a special request to Rangers captain James Tavernier, and he wants to make it clear that he is not joking.

In a recent interview, McCoist expressed his desire for Tavernier to break his record of 355 goals for the club. The former striker, who is a Rangers legend, scored an impressive number of goals during his time at Ibrox, and he believes Tavernier has the ability to surpass that mark.

McCoist stated, “You think I’m joking? I’m not joking. James Tavernier has been an outstanding player for Rangers, and I believe he has what it takes to break my record. He’s already scored over 50 goals for the club, and he’s still relatively young. If he continues at this rate, he could definitely surpass me.”

Tavernier, who has been with Rangers since 2015, has been a key player for the team and has consistently contributed goals from the right-back position. McCoist’s request may put some pressure on the captain, but it also shows the faith and confidence he has in Tavernier’s abilities.

It remains to be seen if Tavernier can rise to the challenge and break McCoist’s record, but one thing is for sure – Ally McCoist is serious about his request, and he believes Tavernier has what it takes to make it happen.
